What About The Kens?

I'm already seeing guys complain about the Barbie movie end, how they wanted Kens to be equal in Barbieland but were only given a small part on the Cabinet.

That's the point.

You're meant to feel bad for the Kens. Believe me, women aren't partying over the 'Returns to Matriarch' ending. Some will be, but the ones who also clocked the meaning behind it won't. Most women will also feel bad for Kens. Because it's an exact parallel to how women are treated in reality.

Men, you're meant to be upset. You're meant to question it. Because you're meant to feel it, and feel what that is like, so you can finally understand women. You're upset at seeing it in a movie, now imagine living it in reality. That's being a woman.

Kens were shit on so you could feel what it was like for women this entire time. Kens were being used as a placement so you could see yourself in a woman's shoes. A world dominated by the opposite sex. When Ken leaves, and sees male presidents (All men) for the first time, men being doctors and lawyers, etc, realising he is more than just a prop for Barbie, that was on purpose. Because that is the feeling that Barbie gave to women. It's why you cheer for him at first before he goes a little overboard.

It's exactly why the real world was an exaggerated Partriarchy and Barbieland an exaggerated Matriarchy. Neither wins. Neither is equal. None of them change for the better. It's why you should want women in the real world to be respected, and Kens in Barbieland to be respected.

The thing is, women also didn't win. Not in the real world. In Barbieland, yes, but not anywhere else. The real world didn't change. But you didn't notice, did you? That Gloria (The mother that helped Barbie) also didn't get a position on the Mattel board? It was still all men? Her idea was ignored until it made a profit, and the men will likely get the credit? She'll still just be the receptionist? The women representing the real world didn't get anymore opportunities, neither did the men in Barbieland.

I was hoping that Gloria would be offered a position on the board, and that the Barbie Cabinet would introduce another entire Cabinet to represent the Kens, but neither happened. They're complete mirrors.

But which one did you actually notice? Which did you actually care about? Now tell me again the ending was unfair. Because it was. For both parties. That's the point.

The difference is, Barbieland is fictional. You will walk out of the theatre with the reassurance that at least it's not real. Women won't. Women can't. Companies not giving women equal opportunities or voices isn't fictional, and that was just one example. There are no women presidents (USA at least) for us to go look at in the real world. We don't have somewhere to go to realise it could be different for us like Ken did. Barbie and make believe is all we had when we were kids, or even now.

You're supposed to be mad, just not at the movie.

Two days had passed since your leave had unexpectedly ended and like clockwork, you hardly saw Price. He stayed in his office, trying to get the work done while waiting for any intel from the phone to show up. Most of the paperwork could wait, the higher ups and Laswell didn’t need it immediately, but you knew that once he started he didn’t stop.

The only times you saw him were in the halls and at night just before bed. You rarely ever saw him at meal times, which made you more upset because you knew he wasn’t eating.

You wanted to say you were used to it but after spending a week with him almost constantly around you, you were a little lonely. Those late nights you spent together, all of the time you both spent together preparing for your anniversary and for any dates in between, the fact that you two weren’t far from each other inside the house. It almost bordered on too much but neither of you could help it, that was just how it was the first week you both were put on leave. The energy would relax eventually which would make it easier to go back to work but since that time was cut short, you weren’t ready.

You didn’t want to admit that you were still being clingy so you told yourself that eventually it’ll let up and eventually you’ll be okay with the minimal contact with Price.

However, as you watched the clock tick closer towards the end of dinner without him in sight, a pit formed in your stomach.

“How come we never get invited to your flat, Doc?” Gaz brought you out of your thoughts and you raised an eyebrow. “You’ve lived here for a while now.”

“Because I see you enough as it is.” You teased and he rolled his eyes. “My apartment is way too small for any social gatherings.”

“You could always invite one of us over.”

“Okay, pick who goes first.”

You hid your smile behind your cup when Gaz and Soap began a petty argument over who would go first when you knew that neither would relent. The subject would eventually be dropped and you wouldn’t have to worry about them asking again until the next time you go on leave. It wasn’t the first time and it wouldn’t be the last but you had become an expert at deflecting their wishes to visit.

You were incredibly lucky that they didn’t ask to visit Price, opting to instead go out for drinks, otherwise you knew that Price would have a hard time explaining why he had tampons in his bathroom.

You glanced at the clock. Ten minutes until the kitchen closed and he was nowhere to be seen. 

You hid your frown by eating. It would be a miracle if you didn’t both chew him out and cling to him when you saw him later tonight in your room. 

“How much longer until Laswell finds something?” Dinnae ken how many times I can lift before my muscles fail.” Soap sighed and you shrugged, understanding his slight frustration.

It was taking a long time to find anything from the phone. Usually it only took a couple hours before you all were back in the field when it came to cracking open a phone. You couldn’t imagine it would have that much protection on it when it seemed like a completely ordinary weapons deal. 

Maybe that was contributing to the way you were feeling. Everyone was antsy to get back in the field after a small bust. Most of the time there was more action, another terrorist to catch or something leading to another bust before you were grounded back at base. Now it felt like a waiting game.

You couldn’t help but wonder if Price was feeling the same and if that was why he had locked himself in office.

“Lay off the weights and watch TV or something, you’ll be too sore to work.” You chided Soap and he scoffed.

“Two days in and Doc is back to being the medic. New record.” He teased and you shot him a look that made the table snicker. “You gonna make us do physicals?”

“Maybe I should, it’ll give us something to do.”

He groaned and Gaz shook his head. While the idea of physicals was something to do, you weren’t too bored yet of helping the head medic of the base sort files and check on the other soldiers just yet. It was always hard stopping the adrenaline once it started but you wanted to get back in the field before it disappeared. 

You could use it as an excuse to see Price, one that would ward off any suspicions that the others may get. 

You looked up at the clock and the kitchen closed. You stood up, more than ready to see him before you nodded to the boys.

“I’ll ask John if he’s heard anything.” You said and smiled. “Maybe I’ll mention you’re bored while I’m at it.”

“Ah! No, don’t do that, he'll make me train the rookies.” Soap pleaded and you laughed as you walked out of the mess hall. “I mean it!”

You tried to hide your excitement so no one would ask you questions but you practically ran down the hall towards his office. You were ready to see him even if it would only be a quick visit. It would at least be longer than right before bed.

You knocked on Price’s door and didn’t even wait for him to call you in before you opened the door.

“Doc.” He smiled up at you from his desk which was covered in papers and his laptop.

“You missed dinner.” You closed the door behind you and he gave you a confused look.

“It’s only four.”

He looked down at his watch and frowned, which made you raise an eyebrow as you watched his eyes harden.

“How are you of all people this bad at time management?” You wondered.

He was the most timely when it came to literally everything else when he wasn’t filling out paperwork. The man praised his “violence and timing” and yet time seemed to slip past him when he was stuck at a desk doing the work he hated.

“I’m good when it matters.” He said and you made a disapproving noise that made him shoot you a look. “You know what I mean, I’ll grab something later.”

You huffed, willing to let it go but he paused.

Price studied your face intently. You watched his eyes bounce around and you raised an eyebrow before a frown pulled at his face. He nodded towards the door and you understood immediately.

You locked the door and when you turned around he had already pulled a chair up beside him. You didn’t hesitate to sit next to him and didn’t protest when he grabbed your legs to put them on his lap. 

“Did you finish?” You gestured to his desk despite the fact that he looked swamped with work.

“Was close to it but they sent me documents to read.” He grumbled and you frowned.

You knew that the reason why he got so much of the busy work was that he and Laswell split it apart to get through it quicker. It was the red tape that unfortunately had to be put around the task force for it to even be made, though there were many rules the force didn’t even have to worry about considering what it was made for, and Price had offered to help.

But you still couldn’t help but think that the higher ups gave the amount of paperwork they did for a spiteful reason.

It wasn’t exactly a secret that Price had a habit of insubordination and speaking out against anyone above him, in fact it was something that massively turned you on, so you wouldn’t be surprised if this was a way to get back at him. Regardless however, you thought it was ironic that they relied on him to get the job done on the field and yet bogged him down with documents and files that took up more of his time. 

It worried you too. He hid his stress well but you knew that it would soon chip away at his resolve if it continued. 

Which only made you feel worse about your predicament. 

“It’ll still be here tomorrow.” You said and he raised an eyebrow. “You do realize that they’re slow with processing these regardless of how fast you get them in.”

“Yeah, but I’d rather get it done in a day.”

You nearly laughed considering it had been two days and he wasn’t close to being finished. Instead you leaned back in your chair and watched him place a hand on your shin.

“I’ll finish tonight.” He said and this time you couldn’t stop the scoff that escaped your lips.

“You always say that but you never do.” You pointed out and he shot you a look.

“I will.”

“Uh-huh.”

Price rolled his eyes and you copied him before he gave you a tentative squeeze that made you both smile. He got more comfortable in his chair but went back to work, leaving the room in silence. 

You watched him for a moment before you glanced at his watch and your face fell.

You had already been in office for a lot longer than you intended. It was meant to be a quick visit, to satisfy your need to see him for just a moment but like always you found yourself stuck in his presence because he was the only place you wanted to be at the moment.

You’d have to cut it short however. Anyone could knock on the door or walk by and hear the both of you. Someone could also look for you or notice that you’re not anywhere in your usual places around the base and get suspicious, especially when you had told Soap of all people where you were heading.

He could keep a secret but not a secret he could use to tease you. 

“What’s bothering you?” Price brought you out of your thoughts and your eyebrows knitted together. “It’s written all over your face, love.”

You wanted to tell him how lonely you felt and to ask if maybe he was feeling the same way. You wanted to tell him it was a little unfair that he spent so much time on paperwork that could wait, that it didn't need to be done all in one sitting, and that you were quite frankly, a little upset that you didn’t get to have a proper leave before getting thrown back into this mess.

But when you looked at the paperwork on his desk, the amount and the way that you noticed he had slight undereye circles, you swallowed all of your complaints.

It would be unfair to say any of that to him now; what good would it do? It would only stress him out more than he already was considering you all were dealing with arguably the most dangerous man on the planet. He didn’t need to worry about you and your feelings right now, especially because right now you weren’t necessarily supposed to be together.

You were soldiers. 

Him a captain and you a lieutenant.

Besides, you had done this song and dance for nearly two decades. In your mind you should be used to your leave being cut short, so being upset just sounded childish when you thought it all out.

So you pushed it away, like you always did.

“I’m antsy.” You said, which was partially true. “Have you heard anything from Kate?”

“She’s still trying to get into the phone. Seems they put some protective measures on it.” 

You sighed heavily and he gave you a pat on your leg with a sympathetic smile. All there was left to do was wait. You weren’t too excited to break the news to Soap or Gaz, or even Ghost, considering that you were sure they’d complain about it too. 

You were about to leave when Price spoke.

“Next week is November.” He said and you tilted your head. “Week after is our anniversary.”

“And we still haven’t figured anything out.” You hummed. “Not that it matters anyway now since we’re at work.”

Price stopped what he was doing and turned his body towards you to give you his full attention. You could see a hint of nervousness in his eyes which made you give him a confused look.

“Actually, was thinking we’d have dinner. We can find an excuse.”

You perked up which made him smile.

“Our favorite restaurant?”

When he nodded you let out a small cheer that made him chuckle. You didn’t hesitate to lean forward and trap him in a kiss he happily accepted. 

A dinner wasn’t something grand or a vacation that got you away from all of the stress in your life but you were fine with that considering the circumstances. Ordinarily, neither of you would’ve tried to go somewhere romantic together while working, the risk was too high, but Price wanted to try to make the day special regardless. You weren’t going to complain.

You were just happy that you'd get uninterrupted time with him, especially when you knew that between now and then, you’d barely see each other.

You wanted more now however, especially as he grabbed your chair to pull you closer to him. You sighed when he deepened the kiss by holding your face with gentle hands. A simple kiss was all it took to bring out the desperation you hid away but you weren’t at all embarrassed, not when he smiled against your lips as you wrapped your arms around his neck...

“Be done for the night, please?” You pleaded softly when you broke apart.

Price stared at you with a sympathetic look and you tried not to frown. You missed the guilt in his eyes when you pulled away, though he didn’t let you go very far from him, and you were unable to hide some of your disappointment.

“I’m almost done, it won’t take me long.” He said but part of you had a hard time believing him.

You didn’t dwell on how much that hurt. Instead you swallowed your disappointment and pressed a quick kiss on his cheek to make it not a big deal. You gave him a small smile and hoped you could at least convince him to come to bed before the base called for lights out.

“Don’t be too late.”

“I won’t.”

You hummed and had the idea to leave, having overstayed longer than you should or expected to do, but he still had you trapped in your chair. You raised an eyebrow and gave him a suspicious look when he pulled you to the edge of your seat but that didn’t stop the deep loving look in his eyes.

He kissed you again. It was slower and you immediately understood what he was trying to do when he placed a hand on your hip.

“John.” It came out as a soft whine rather than the protest it should’ve been when he pressed a kiss under your ear. Despite knowing that you had to leave to avoid any sort of suspicions, you leaned into him and clutched the back of his shirt.

“It’ll be quick,” he mumbled in your ear and pressed hotter kisses against your skin. 

You’d call him a liar if you weren’t aching for him. Everywhere he touched you lit your skin on fire and you held onto him tightly as if he’d pull away from you now when he made his intentions perfectly clear.

All of your self control flew out the window when he pulled you onto his lap. The thought of someone walking by didn’t cross your mind as you straddled him and moved your hips against his, especially when he let out a low rumble from his chest.

You let out a hum and smiled when you felt his hardening cock against your clothed heat. You gasped when he grouped your ass and let out a soft moan when he squeezed your plump flesh. He moved your hips and you gripped his shoulders, letting the friction create pleasure that raced up your spine-

Price’s phone vibrated loudly on his desk and you both froze. For just a moment you stared at each other with heavy breaths, waiting for the other to make a move before he leaned forward. 

When he went past you and grabbed his phone you clenched your jaw. Disappointment settled in your stomach but you brushed it off and instead slipped off of his lap without saying anything. 

He didn’t let you leave, however, as he grabbed your wrist and gave you a serious look that reminded you exactly why you had gone to his office in the first place. 

“I’ll let them know.” He hung up the phone and adjusted himself before he stood up.

“Laswell?” You wondered and he nodded.

“Looks like you got what you wished for.”

You snorted but didn’t say anything as you followed him out of his office. You pushed everything else away as you prepared yourself for another fight. 

A soldier, a medic. No longer in love with the man who stole your breath away and made you happy. 

You could only hope that this would bring the mission closer towards Makarov.

Wakasa was observing your figure silently as you continued to doodle something in your notebook. You weren’t drawing anything in particular, just some random hearts and smileys here and there.

But the male wasn’t too focused on that. Instead, he was watching the expression adoring your features. Eyebrows furrowed in concentration, pink tongue peeking out from between your lips. You looked so adorable in that moment, Wakasa had to restrain himself from pinching your cheeks.

Then you looked up at him, arching an eyebrow in a silent question. The male sent you a lazy smirk, lilac eyes containing a hint of mischief that caused a small giggle to escape your lips.

“Do you want to ditch?”

A shudder ran down your spine as you felt his hot breath fanning against your skin, a not so subtle blush dusting your cheeks. He had mouthed those words so quietly, you wouldn’t have been able to hear them, had he not gotten so close to you—mouth practically touching your exposed neck.

“Waka,” you whispered to him in a warning tone. Though the male seemed to be the least bit threatened by it, simply arching an eyebrow as if he was challenging you. Then you felt his hand rubbing your thigh sensually and tried swatting it away, only for him to start off where he had been previously interrupted.

You shot him a glare as you felt his hand trailing your thigh, but the male wasn’t looking at you anymore, bored lilac eyes staring ahead. Pursing your lips you ripped off a small piece of paper before scribbling something on it. This earned you a curious look from the otherwise always bored male.

“Promise?”

You blushed, facing the other direction so he couldn’t see your red face, which was futile since there was no way Wakasa wouldn’t be able to notice. Of course he would, there had never even gone a single day without him watching you. Whether he was close beside you, or somewhere in the distance, did not matter.

Too flustered to pronounce a word, you simply nodded, eyes shadowed by your bangs. In response, the male squeezed your thigh gently before removing his hand.

A subtle sensation of ownership slowly began to envelope his senses. You were just too pure and fragile for this dark and toxic world. Too innocent. It had only been a matter of time before those rotten pests would finally realize how much better you were than them.

…They never stood a chance to begin with.

Sano Shinichiro

➵ Shinichiro is the kind of yandere who believes in love at first sight, and that's exactly what happened when he laid eyes on his darling for the first time. He was instantly infatuated and couldn't resist the urge to be with them.

➵ Although he kidnaps his darling, Shinichiro doesn't do it to harm them in any way. He just wants to keep them close and protect them from any potential threats. He knows that his actions are extreme, but he genuinely believes that it's the only way to keep his beloved safe.

➵ Shinichiro is severely delusional, thinking that he and his darling are the perfect match for each other. He sees no one else in the world that could make his darling as happy as he can.

➵ Despite his delusions, Shinichiro is not manipulative. He never tries to force his darling to do anything they don't want to do. He respects their boundaries and always asks for their consent before doing anything.

➵ Shinichiro is extremely protective of his darling, and he will become violent if anyone poses a threat to them. However, he will never physically harm his darling, no matter how angry he gets.

➵ He truly believes that his darling is deeply in love with him, just as he is with them. He sees their every action as a sign of their love, even if it's something as simple as a smile or a nod.

➵ Shinichiro is very clingy and affectionate with his darling. He loves to hold them close and shower them with kisses and compliments. He wants to make them feel loved and appreciated every second of every day.

➵ Despite his clinginess, Shinichiro is still mindful of his darling's boundaries. He knows when they need space and will give it to them without hesitation.

➵ Shinichiro is very attentive to his darling's needs. He always makes sure they have everything they need, whether it's food, water, or a warm blanket. He wants them to feel comfortable and cared for at all times.

➵ He has a habit of talking to himself when he's alone with his darling. He'll often say things like, "We're so perfect together," or "I'll never let anyone hurt you." It's his way of reinforcing his delusions and reminding himself of how much he loves his darling.

➵ Shinichiro is very possessive of his darling, but not in a creepy or controlling way. He just wants to be the only one who can make them happy.

A sudden gasp escaped your cold, almost numb lips as you covered your mouth on pure instinct before walking over to the beat-up male. Without paying much thought, you cupped his cheek gently as a bruise slowly began to bloom on the pale skin. His bottom lip had been busted, small droplets of blood trailing down.

Mouth opening and closing like a fish as you tried to form a coherent sentence, but no words seemed to come out. Sensing your growing worry the male simply let out a laugh, “There’s no need to worry, I’ve taken beatings far worse than this.”

You eyed him skeptically, guilt gnawing at the back of your throat. Fully aware that it had been your carelessness that had put this boy in danger.

Shaking your head, you spoke timidly, “Thank you for saving me Sano-kun, I don’t know what would have happened to me, had you not interfered.”

Onyx eyes widened at the mention of his name, a subtle blush coating his cheeks. Your voice was like a silent melody, delicate and beautiful as it evaporated in the cold air. It was even prettier up close.

“So, you recognized me?” He said, a laugh following his question as he rubbed his neck sheepishly. You smiled softly at the boy’s awkwardness, finding it exceptionally cute. There was just something very endearing about it.

Then his expression suddenly went serious. “But you won’t have to worry about those bastards anymore,” he said, gaze holding a sort of firmness that made you feel grounded. The male didn’t elaborate further on the subject, shoving his bruised knuckles into his jean’s pockets.

Instead of pressing him on the matter, you simply nodded. Perhaps that was a pretty careless thing for you to do, but at the time, you didn’t think much about it. Neither did you second guess yourself when you accepted his suggestion to give you a ride home.

It was only when you entered your house that a small hint of unease began creeping in. You leaned your back against the hard and sturdy wooden door, pressing your lips into a firm line as you recalled your conversation. You never remembered telling him the address…

…So how did he know where you lived?

I couldn’t stop thinking about this and Barbie Steve so:

Steve is a special edition Ken, with his polo shirt and sunglasses he’s supposed to be Cool Party Ken, always ready to party and nothing more.

Steve hates it. Not the polo, he actually loves his outfit, but the idea he will be nothing more than the Cool Party Ken. A Ken.

He watches Nancy, who is supposed to be “his Barbie”, being Journalist Barbie and Good student Barbie and he wishes he could do that too. Journalist Barbie comes with a flowery long skirt he can’t stop thinking about.

But he can’t wear it because he’s a Ken.

And he knows he should be okay with what he is because he’s very lucky to be a special edition Ken and all the other Ken are jealous of him, so he tries to endure it for a while.

Until he can’t anymore.

He starts off with something he always dreamed of: he takes a pair of scissors and hairspray and becomes an hairstylist. Everyone is shocked to see and Hairstylist Ken but they welcome the change anyways, not knowing that Steve actually refers to himself as Hairstylist Barbie.

Robin, a Student/Worker Barbie, is the first person he tells.

She comes to him asking for a short haircut which is considered a crazy thing to want, since almost all Barbies have long hair.

“I don’t care! I hate my long hair, if people get upset that’s their problem. I will be a Rebel Barbie if I have to.”

“But why me?” Steve can’t help but ask. Usually people get haircuts from Hairstylist Barbies, not him.

“Because no Hairstylist Barbie wants to cut my hair” she admits, looking down “they think it’s weird. But I thought you would… understand.”

And Steve does understand, so he cuts her hair with no more objections. At the end, Robin is admiring her new shorter hair in the mirror when Steve says “well, one Hairstylist Barbie did say yes to you, in the end.”

And Robin understands.

The first person to call him Barbie, however, is Eddie.

Eddie is a standard Ken and he’s okay with it, most of the time. He firmly believes that any special edition Ken is just a snuck out snob, so he lives his life trying to prove that average Ken like him are just as fine.

“If we were just like the Special Kens like Steve” Jonathan objects “we would have found a Barbie to be with, don’t you think?”

Eddie would love to go on a rant about how Steve the Cool Party Ken is nothing special, but his eyes are caught by two Sailor Barbies walking across the street.

Eddie has never seen a Sailor Barbie but they have the same outfit, similar short hair and matching hats, so he imagines it must be a new type.

Despite looking so similar, one of them catches his eye.

He gives Jonathan a knowing look of “watch as I get a Barbie for myself”, which Jonathan replies with a look of “can’t wait to see you make a fool of yourself”, and then he’s off crossing the street.

He watches as one of them enters a ice cream parlor, and the other, the one who has caught his interest, stays back, staring at the door as if they needed to take some courage.

Eddie takes it as a sign to shoot his shot “Hey Barbiegirl!”

Nameless Sailor Barbie goes rigid but doesn’t turn around, so Eddie catches up to them.

“You know that old saying, every Barbie needs a Ken so…”

Sailor Barbie finally turns around, and Eddie is shocked to be faced with Steve the Pool Party Ken. Or maybe not a Ken. He’s confused.

Steve is looking at him expectingly, red in the cheeks.

He wets his lips before talking, making them glossier “so…?”

He doesn’t correct Eddie, he doesn’t say “I’m not a Barbie, you idiot”, he doesn’t reject him. He wants him to finish with his cheesy and overused pick up line.

Eddie wonders if he has been a special edition Lucky Ken without realizing it before.

“So, would you be my Barbie?”

Steve giggles, kisses him in the cheek and says “take me to dinner first, then we’ll see” and then, without another word, he’s gone inside the parlor.

Eddie stands there, staring at the door, too shocked to turn around and give Jonathan a “I told you so”.

And then when he does die, it's to save Ken. He wronged Ken so badly, the only way to make it right is to die. The ultimate in self-sacrifice as repentance. Akinari dies having accepted his fate and contented with his life; Shinji dies still full of so much guilt and regret. Akinari's life is, for him, defined by what he did while he was alive. How he spent those precious moments. Shinji's is defined by what he does when he dies - how can he ever right the mistakes he's made; how can he ever be absolved of his sins in any other way?

Do you ever think about how Shinji is wrong? About how his inaction, wasting away until it's all over, taking the pills that are slowly killing him - none of it fixes anything. Do you ever think about how Ken's actually upset to learn Shinji is dying; he's upset that no matter what he does, Shinji would die anyways. Do you ever think about how it's not his inaction and his death that changes Ken, but it's the one action Shinji did finally take - protecting Ken from Takaya. If Shinji had sat around and wasted away until his body gave out, it wouldn't have done anything. He thinks it's repentance but it's not. He could have died any other way and Ken wouldn't have been changed. And after years of inaction and waiting for it to finally end, Shinji finally, finally took an action - he saved Ken from Takaya - and that's what changed Ken? Not Shinji's death, but his desire to protect Ken. Proven in portable, where Ken still undergoes his evolution even if Shinji doesn't die. He never had to die to repent. He just couldn't conceptualize such an idea.

How Shinji was so off base, but Akinari eventually figured it out. How even in their final moments, they remained opposites - Shinji dies never realizing the truth of the matter; never realizing his life and his actions mean more and fix more than his death ever could, while Akinari passes away knowing his life was made by how he spent it. Shinji thought he knew what his life's meaning was, but he was wrong. Akinari died knowing for sure he was right about his. Only one of them ever gets to really figure it out.

Do you ever think about how they're similar, too? How they both leave behind someone who goes on to live for them? How Akinari's mother says she's going to travel, and eat delicious foods, and do all the things her son couldn't do, and take those experiences with her to tell him about when they meet again. How Ken goes on to fight Nyx; to eliminate the Dark Hour; for Shinji. How Ken says 'I'm fighting for him, now, too."

Stop it, now! None of them hear you. None of them see you. You’re invisible now, like you’ve always been. The baby, underestimated from day one because of your order of birth. Roman says something, something you’re not hearing, but seeing. Watching. About his kids. Low blow. Kendall goes for his neck. There are moments like this where you watch your father instead of your brother. Such an angry, bitter, paranoid man. With his hands around him, you can’t tell where one ends and the other begins. His name is on the tip of your tongue. Logans, but that is the wrong man before you. This is Kendall. You get between them, prying his hands off Roman. And then she threw the plan away the minute she could, believing that Tom would be Matsson’s CEO. You were going to tell them, really. As soon as that glass door closed, you were going to spill your guts. About him, about the deal, about everything. You swear on your father’s grave, you were going to tell them. And then he put his hands on you, around your neck, and any alliance you had was over. Any good graces you had left vanished. You wanted them to burn in that house. You wanted the whole world to burn. You put up with enough. With too much for far too long. He’s been trying to save you since you met, giving you outs from the maze you were in. he loves barbie land trust me but he dose get a little jealous. some of the kens there really like you and he feels like he kind of has to try a little more to get your attention because they keep trying to show off.

speaking of ken you have one and he feels a little insecure whenever he's around even though he knows you don't like ken like that. "you're literally made for each other." he says and you can't really debate that because it is true to an extent but you always reassure him that you love only him.

"i may be made for ken but ken isn't made for what i need like you are." you bring both your hands down to his and hold it tight. "please don't think less of yourself because of ken's, they're not who i like, you are."

sometimes he gets jealous of you ngl. he wants to live in a world where you can just float from your roof to your pink cadillac, fight crime and still make time for the mall, the beach and girls night every night.

when you're in his world he practically holds your hand like someone is going to steal him from you. he gets nervous because even though he's spiderman he has no idea what he's gonna do if someone cat calls you or trys to slap your ass. especially in new york like what if they shoot him yk???

your cannon event

entering your second/third year of being spider-barbie things got difficult in barbie world. [after the events of the barbie movie] you suddenly got villains—two deranged doctors, and even your own ken. not only did they seem to come back just to get revenge but they also get more and more difficult to defeat.

it started with a glitter shortage and now you've had to fight your ken who's become a venom variant. your ken was jealous that you were spider-barbie while he was just a variant of news reporter ken and he tried to become spiderman himself by infecting himself with some mysterious substance.

now the two of you are fighting in a burning building.

"ken stop this isn't you!" you dodge his heavy punches. it was getting super hot and the building was about to collapse. the both of you are surrounded the flames. "ken please stop this.." you tried to reason with him but a strong inky black hand wrapped around your throat.

your pink lenses were broken—you were feeling light headed now snd the fire was making it worse. "please..." a tear rolled from your face to venoms as you started to see stars surround your vision. you tried to kick your feet to get him to stop it but it only met with the hard, unmoving mass of venom.

one by one the ceiling started to fall in and venom could only laugh as he saw you struggling. venoms long tongue came out of his mouth and his spikey teeth started to retract as he inched closer to your head. he was going to eat you.

by a miracle a burning beam narrowly missed you and fell on him. gasping as you fell on your back narrowly missing the fire you turned to the inky black figure. "ken!?" limping to him you saw your other half struggling under the beam. "(name)....?"

"i'll save you!" you put your webs on the burning beam you tried your best to move it. you were too weak. crying you put your other web on it, struggling to move the object.

"(name), go on without me..." kens voice wavered as he searched for your hidden eyes. the inky black substance of venom seemed to slip off of him like water. "but i need you!" you reached for kens face only as more support beams fell from the ceiling.

hearing footsteps you turned around, there was a cop in the doorway if the wear-house, holding the black pistol to you, you had no choice but to leave, no one knows you're spider-barbie.

you don't know this but your universe and everyone else's is heavily connected through the toy line (like in the movie) so your line of toys was very effected by your cannon event

theres mattel branded action figures when you're crying holding kens picture, theres toys where you're called 'depressed spider-barbie' and they're even selling play-sets where your dream house is in disarray

when miles found out he had to call you but they went unanswered. you've been m.i.a for almost three days, you haven't answered any of the texts messages or calls that your friends sent you and they knew someone had to reach you because the your toy products we're getting sadder by the hour.

crying into the spider-man plush that miles had given you. hugging yourself you didn't notice miles come through the portal—"(name) are you okay?" he put his hand on your waist as he sat on the edge of your bed. he knew you weren't.

you were wearing a shirt took from him and you hair and makeup weren't even done. "miles i.." you looked into his eyes, his brown irises full of worry. he brought his hand to your face as a way to soothe you but he's not good at this like he wants to be.

"it's nothing." you said as you turned your head to wipe the tears off your face. "please don't act like that bonita.." you knew you shouldn't do this to him—but you aren't made for this and neither is he. "i had my event today." was all you could muster before you cried into him. but then she saw how broken you looked. "jeff this is serious their makeup and hair aren't done.." they caved but he had to keep the door open which he had no problem with.

he distracts you with playing video games, or going out to festivals and carnivals just to clear your head.

it took a week for you to feel better enough to go back to barbie land and when you left your toys changed to something different.

"spider-barbie has a new boyfriend!" news articles were everywhere—imagine miles' surprise when he saw him in his spiderman suit carrying you through barbie land. they named him ken carson and made him dominican but he'll take it.

I know I always say this but I feel like with Steven, but I feel like learning something and researching something about you or what you like is sort of a love language/show of affection and caring

So when he meets you (or you come out as trans to him) he takes time to learn some things so that you can feel more comfortable and also works on saying things properly like getting your pronouns right and the like

Steven always compliments people but he makes sure to compliment you the most. You always hear the words "beautiful/handsome" and "lovely/dashing" coming out of him

If he ever sees you looking at yourself in the mirror to check your outfit and you look slightly unsure about how you feel about it then he comes up behind you says you look great in it

If you ever feel dysphoric and have one of those days where you just don't feel like your body is reflecting who you are right, he understands in the best way he can and consoles you

"I still think you're beautiful/handsome. And it's okay if you aren't feeling that way today. You'll always be great to me."

If anyone misgenders you or uses the wrong pronouns while he's with you, he politely and quickly corrects them. He doesn't want to formulate it like they did it on purpose, he just does it quietly

He will, however, although not a fan of confrontation, tell someone to act properly if they're causing problems

He's also really great

Marc takes a bit of time getting used to everything but that's just because he wants to make sure that he doesn't do anything that hurts you or makes you upset

He tries his best to help you with dysphoria and any other issues that you deal with as a trans person

"You're a woman/man to me. And, wow, are you a pretty/handsome one."

The flirt seems a bit out there but he's trying to help you by letting you know that your identity is valid to him and that he sees you in that light and always will

Not afraid to break someone's nose if they call you something nasty or say something

This man would get into a full on fist fight for you and he means that

Marc hardly speaks how he feels, except for when he thinks you look pretty and hot, which is all the time. The only emotion he voices is his attraction to you

In case someone does a double take because you don't have a corresponding voice to your appearance yet, he looks at them with a stern "What? You have a problem?" face

Jake Lockley

Marc would get in a fist fight with a transphobe... but Jake would get in a knife fight

Jake takes it upon himself to protect you if need be. Not saying that Steven and Marc wouldn't protect you too but with Jake all he really knows how to do outside of be your loving boyfriend is be a guard dog

I just saw Barbie. I'm writing meta about it. This is your spoiler warning. Do not read past this if you don't want to be spoiled. Additionally I'm going to discuss radical feminism and liberal feminism. I am neither I'm a feminist, but as a trans person I find both strains to be inaccessible and I prefer a more intersectional approach, just to state my bias upfront. Additionally I anticipate getting multiple "it's not that deep" comments on this meta. To which I respond that the movie may be deeply unserious at times but it does try to tackle gender which means we should get to talk about it.

I do want to acknowledge that this is the movie of the year, and that it's made by Mattel and Warner Brothers and as such it was literally never going to be based and the best we can hope for is what it was, which is liberal girlboss feminism. The movie was very fun and very good and it did have a surprisingly coherent view of gender and it did some things that I did like when it came to that HOWEVER as a gay transgender man watching the movie it's lack of a queer perspective was very obvious to me and took me out of it occasionally.

So I just want to establish for those who have not seen it but are reading this meta how gender works in this movie. And to recap the movie with a focus on the gender stuff rather than the main Pinocchio plot. The movie starts in Barbie land where Barbies have a good day every day and Kens only have a good day when Barbies smile at them. In Barbie land all the powerful jobs are occupied by Barbies and all the Kens have the nebulous job of "beach" which means that whatever the Barbies decide goes and the Kens are more or less subject to their whims (no word on how the Midges or Skippers or Allen fit into this barbie based higherarchy. One could guess based on a couple of scenes but it's never really lingered on)

Ken(Ryan Gosling)'s world revolves around Barbie(Margot Robbie). Ken(RG) is Barbie's(MR) boyfriend, but Barbie is good friends with Ken(Simu Liu) who she dances with and who is generally less cringefail than Ken(RG). Ken(RG) is frequently jealous of Ken(SL). Ken(RG) is also somewhat taken for granted. Barbie doesn't seem to care that much about him. He tries to kiss barbie, she doesn't reciprocate. Ken tries to hang out with Barbie, she kicks him out because it's girls night, as it is every night. So on and so forth. Barbie is not obligated to care about Ken, but she's clearly not putting in any work into maintaining this creator ordained relationship and it's clearly upsetting to Ken.

Barbie is experiencing some Real Girl tm problems such as flat feet and thoughts of death and weird Barbie who has been played with too much sends her into the real world to fix it. Ken(SL) goads Ken(RG) into going with Barbie into the real world. When Barbie learns Ken is coming her immediate assumption is that he'll slow him down.

When Ken and Barbie enter LA Barbie immediately starts experiencing Misogyny. Ken similarly starts experiencing privileges as a man which he did not have in Barbie land. This is heavy handed. Barbie verbally states that she feels like she's being gawked at in an almost violent way and Ken says he feels admired in a not at all violent way (with the outfit Ken was wearing and how he was still carrying himself with deference to barbie I sincerely doubt he would experience exactly 0 homophobia but it was necessary for him to feel that way in order to make his character arc work so I'll let it slide).

Ken goes for a walk without Barbie while barbie does plot relevant activities. He sees women showing respect to men, he sees a slide show of some kind of male role models. He feels like he can be something in this world. So he goes to a middle school library and picks up some books about patriarchy. He tries to get a job in the real world, it goes poorly, so he decides to go back to Barbie land and establish patriarchy there.

Barbie comes back to Barbie land with a friendly human woman named Gloria who works for Mattel and her MCR listening 12 year old daughter. On the way she tells her new human friend and her daughter that Barbies are in charge in Barbie land and women have all the important jobs. But as they drive into Barbie land they find that Ken has gone full radfem in their absence. He's flipped the Barbie-Ken higherarchy on its head. He's turned the dream house into a man cave. And he's some how convinced the Barbies to behave like sandwich making foot massage providing girlfriends.

And here's where I would like to start doing some meta. What has happened here? Ken is essentially a (less complex than human on account of being a doll) cisgender heterosexual white woman. He is in proximity to the ruling party, Barbie who is like a cishet white man. Ken is not on the margins the way that Allen and Midge are. His occupation is Barbie's boyfriend. Ken got a taste of what it was like when the gendered oppression that he is used to is flipped and he decided that's what he wants. He doesn't much care how the discontinued dolls feel about this, he's not thinking about them, nor is the movie. He doesn't really see a problem with there being a division between Barbies and Kens, he doesn't see a problem with one group being subservient. He just doesn't want to be low on the food chain. Ken is right to want liberation for Kens but he thinks that he can obtain that by taking the jobs away from Barbies and giving them to kens. This is why I said Ken has gone full radfem in Barbie's absence. He hasn't gotten rid of the gender essentialism, he hasn't questioned whether power should be shared between Barbies and Kens. Ken is right to throw Barbies shit out of the dream house and kick her to the curb, she doesn't value him like he deserves from a relationship. He's wrong to try to change the constitution to put Kens in charge and change it to Kenland and force all Barbies into the position that Kens previously occupied. I relate this to radfems because radical feminism relies on bioessentialist assumptions and posits that men are always oppressors by their nature and that women would be better off without them. A lot of what makes terfs angry at trans women is that trans people question whether women and men are so easily separately boxed like this and trans women specifically are seen as male infiltrators. Most of them succumb to becoming transphobes before people but on a base level radical feminism is a reactionary hatred of men that is usually based in genuine hurt. Ken is on some all Barbies are pigs shit here rather than examining society and attempting to make it more equitable. I think he needs to sit down with Magic Earring Ken and talk about gender to gain some perspective.

Both me and the movie agree that Kens knee jerk Ken liberation at the Barbies' expense is wrong. Ken even later acknowledged that he didn't even care about patriarchy he just wanted to feel valued. But where me and the movie start to be at odds is when they do a girl boss style ousting of the Kens. Gloria gives a speech about the female grievance she has from the real world and it somehow works on the Barbies despite the fact that the movie previously established that sexism and all of its intricacies and the feelings it engenders are completely foreign to the Barbies. But the Barbies have always been in charge in Barbie land. They're passingly familiar with real world sexism as an abstract concept that they believe they defeated in the 1960s, but they don't experience it, they live in a everyone is valid girlboss utopia. The only way to become ugly is for someone in the real world to play with you too hard, something they can't control. There's no pressure to be pretty because everyone is already pretty and they compliment each other routinely. Barbie doesn't experience any problems being perfect until Gloria starts drawing her with existential dread, and all of the other Barbies are horrified by it as if they've never heard of such a thing. It's a malady that their dear friend is experiencing not a fact of life like it would have to be for Gloria's message to land.

Then they come up with this plan and they free the Barbies and use romantic jealousy to turn the Kens against each other. My problem with this is that in the established world where Kens are the repressed gender, this is essentially putting a bunch of dolls who's oppression is based in being a romantic object for Barbie into misery business ass situations. We're really weaponizing the Kens' internalized misandry against them and saying girlboss? The Kennish desire for Barbie's validation is being used as a tool to oppress them and the movie just... Doesn't see it despite seeming to having coherent liberal feminist messaging*.

Speaking of Liberal feminist messaging. When the Kens realize they've been turned against each other they link arms and head to where the Barbies are. The Barbies have put their constitution back in place. Ken(RG) realizes he's lost and he runs inside crying and Barbie comes to comfort him. Barbie pays lip service to Ken finding who he is without her and to them being "Barbie" and "Ken" instead of "Barbie and Ken" but then when the Kens band together and ask for a supreme court justice President Barbie gives them a concession of a lower court justice and the Kens have to work their way up, the voice over stating that maybe they'll get to where women are irl in a couple decades, and this is treated as a victory somehow. Like putting the girl boss barbietopia back in place at the expense of the Kens is somehow better than the Kens doing the same but in the opposite direction. This after she apologizes to weird Barbie and offers her a cabinet position, treating the most ostracized barbie as more valuable then any Ken.

The closest the movie ever comes to acknowledgeing a perspective outside of the Barbie/Ken binary is when Allen tries to leave Barbieland during the Ken takeover. Allen seems discontented with both the barbieocracy and the kenocracy and he tries to escape containment when Gloria and her emo daughter are leaving Barbie land. He argues that no one will give a shit about a life-sized Allen in the real world because nobody remembers Allen and then he tries to leave with them. Gloria and her daughter change their minds and go back to help Barbie and Allen's plot line just ends there.

There's all these cameos from background and discontinued Dolls. Skipper who's boobs get bigger, Barbie who's a camera, sugardaddy Ken, and magic earring Ken are all in weird Barbies weird house, Midge has a house near Barbie but is judged by the voiceover for being a pregnant doll and Barbie seems to agree, and Allen is the only one who doesn't have duplicates and is sort of in the background casting doubt, but they never follow through on these dolls place in the higherarchy. Which is fine, this movie is the Barbie movie, it's about stereotypical Barbie becoming a real girl and going to the gynecologist. But I do think that they established some dolls on the margins and then left them there, and as someone on the margins in real life I want to know what's going on with them. Most people going to this movie are gonna be Barbies and Kens so they don't touch on it and I think that's kinda sad, but not every movie has to be for me I guess.

TL;DR: the Barbie movie lacks a queer perspective and has some moments where it's stated gender metaphor falls apart because of its necessarily liberal politics.

All that said. I liked the movie. I'm leveling this criticism because it was better than I expected it to be. I didn't expect to go into the theatre and think about gender like that and I did so it deserves points for that even if I have problems with the execution. I thought it would be a shallow Pinocchio plot but it did something fresh with the doll who wants to be a real girl plot and it was genuinely good cinema in terms of the effects and the music and the visual motifs. It was a fun experience I laughed several times. I would recommend it despite being critical of it.

*coherent in that it is a message that has semi consistent internal logic not in that it's internal logic is correct or sound.

TriMax Volume 14: Masculinity, Violence, And The End of Pacifism

TRIGUNBOOKCLUB ISN'T QUITE DONE YET I'M NOT TOO LATE HAHAHAAAAAA

Anyway here's a bit about the final volume I've been meaning to write about almost since book club started.

So in the end Vash shoots and kills Legato for Wolfwood. This bit has been examined a bunch and that's not what I want to talk about here.

It's what happens after.

[Quick note before continuing: I'm American and I'll be talking about American popular media in this post. I mention this to make it clear I'm not deliberately trying to exclude other cultures, especially in their depictions of masculinity. I'm going over the soup I personally live in.]

While I struggle to think of many concrete examples (soupy brain) I know that typically when there's a male character who's forced to kill, it's treated as growth. Killing is a moment of triumph for these characters, they've become Real Men. They were sissies for not wanting to fight, useless at best and an obstruction at worst. Not fighting and not killing had no value.

The one concrete example I can think of is a milder version but still applies: In the Barbie movie Allen is portrayed as a wimp who can't really stand out or stand up for himself. Until the end where he attacks a group of Kens trying to stop our heroes. The culmination of Allen's arc is an act of violence, a demonstration of his masculinity. This moment goes entirely unexamined.

This is a very common form of toxic masculinity in American culture, the celebration of violence as the height of masculinity. You fight and defeat/kill bad guys and that's how you know you're a Real Man.

[At some point I want to talk about Vash's masculinity vs. American pop culture masculinity because in a lot of ways I think he's pretty radical for an action hero. But that's another essay.]

Why am I discussing American culture when talking about a Japanese manga? I bring these things up because that's the narrative I see about violence, pacifism, and masculinity. That's the milieu I live in. And unfortunately American pop culture has a lot of influence across the world, so I'd say it's relevant to talk about when discussing masculinity in media, even non-American media.

[Also I think America and Japan have a fairly long history in basing portrays of a lone hero bringing justice to a lawless place off of each other. But that's yet another essay.]

And now here in volume 14 of Trigun Maximum, Vash has broken his vow to never kill anyone.

So what happens next?

Vash uses his own body to allow the humans to communicate with the fused entity, succeeding where all the greatest Earth weapons failed in breaking it apart and robbing Knives of his power. And when Vash goes to directly confront Knives with one black hole bullet left... he uses it to save Knives' life and sacrifices his own. It's notable in the final chapter even as people are shooting him, Vash doesn't return fire and still says "Can't you just talk about it?"

Killing one person wasn't the death of Vash's ideals, but an evolution of them.

It's clear that he still believes in the things Rem did, the the blank ticket, in the value of life and second chances. All that's happened is that Wolfwood has entered his life and become a part of him too: sometimes the solution is to shoot the bastard in the head. It's not a good thing, that's just how it is.

Even the moment of killing isn't a triumphant one. The hero of the manga has defeated a major villain and it's not a grand victory, but a tragic, heartbreaking moment! Vash's greatest revelation isn't that violence is good, but a deeper connection with Wolfwood, understanding what it means to be the devil while his heart cries out. To Vash this act of violence he's avoided for so long is ultimately about empathy, a better understanding and compassion for another person. Livio, whose life was just saved by Legato's murder, is visibly upset when he says "Vash shot him, he wanted to protect me!" Livio was trained to be an assassin for most of his life and only recently trying to avoid killing when possible, but is still willing to when needed. He still sees the moment where Vash kills Legato and recognizes it for the tragedy it is. He's not happy that Vash has become the very thing he was trying to move away from!

Even if killing is necessary, it's a sad and terrible thing. Even if we must kill, it's not something to celebrate, and should still be avoided. There's still value to life, and in trying to preserve it. As we see in the final battle, in the dissolution of the fused entity, violence isn't even the best way to resolve conflict in the story: empathy and communication is.

This is why in one of my earlier book club posts I tried to emphasize that Vash's ideals aren't just about not killing, and that reducing them to such flattens his character. Why take time to put the dead to rest, if only preserving life matters? His philosophy is ultimately about personhood, seeing others as people with lives that matter, even if no one else sees it. Killing Legato wasn't the death of Rem's legacy or Vash's idealism, where it would have been in so many other stories of this kind.

Fanfiction Idea

This is going to be long because I didn't want to split it up.

I've been thinking about this idea inspired by There's A Part of You Always Standing By (Mapping Out a Sky) by Perpetual Motion (@sweaterkittensahoy )

For those who haven't read it, it's about Rosie and Ken's relationship during the war (and there isn't homophobia, though it is set in the 40's) And if you haven't read it, you should, it's amazing.

So, my idea isn't really that different from what's in the thing, it's really just a bunch of fan fictions that I want to read.

So the gist of it, is it's basically one story, but with multiple different fan fictions/perspectives, and it is set in the 40's with no homophobia like it was in the 40s. It'll, of course, include buck/bucky, but all of my favorite pairs/ rare pairs, and how their stories intertwine, as well as changing some stuff around so that their isn't any major character death.

I apologize if the timeline is off:

Clegan- when they meet, Gale and Marge are close friends, and when he and Bucky first meet, he thinks that Gale and Marge are dating. For the few chapters (like 2-3) they're in basic training and they're kind of dancing around each other, Bucky actively trying not to flirt with Gale, but still being his handsy self, and Gale being receptive to it, but also thinks that Bucky is just a big flirt/ a bit of a whore because he sees Bucky acting similarly handsy with Curt and some of the women there. Everyone thinks they're dating, asking Bucky about his better half, and he explains they're not dating. Gale has some similar experienced

Bucky doesn't realize he can ask out Gale until Marge and her friend (I don't remember her name) comes to visit. Maybe they come a bit earlier, while they're still in basic training. Marge insists that the two of them go get drinks bc she wants to make sure that Bucky is good for Gale, because Gale has written her about him. Bucky asks her "so, how long have you been going out?" you two being her and Gale. She answers "Oh, (friend) and I have been going out for a year."

Bucky blinks at her, dumbfounded. "Lesbian?" He asks, oh so eloquently. She nods, and he responds with "Oh. I thought you and Gale were dating." And she responds with the same thing, mentioning how Gale talked about him in the letters that he sent her. After a day of processing, Bucky does eventually ask out Gale, and they're dating by the time Marge comes back with her girlfriend before they ship out.

(Sometime before they ship out, they get two pictures of the two of them embracing for each of them to carry in their forts. And maybe their is a dance or something idk)

They do break up before Gale goes down, because they fight over Gale not wanting to London with him. Bucky does end up with that woman because she looks so much like Gale, then the next day he finds out that Gale went down, and feels guilty. They then reconnect in stalag luft III, where Bubbles, Dickie, and Curt are bc they didn't die. When it looks like they're going to start dating again, Bucky tells him about the woman in London, which makes Gale pull away. Gale tells Bucky that he's hurt by what Bucky did, even though he knows that they were broken up and Bucky was upset, but it still hurts. Bucky apologizes again, and their relationship starts again, but it's a little rough.

Their relationship is still rough when they're moving to the 2nd POW camp, and if I remember correctly, Gale comes across a friend, and Bucky is jealous of said friend.

Their relationship is slowly healing throughout this, and is basically healed when Gale, his friend, that other guy that escaped with them (I think), and Dickie escape, forcing Bucky (and Curt) to stay behind. And before they escape, Bubbles gives both Bucky and Gale to give to Crosby to let him know that he's alive.

The rest of the stuff happens, Gale gives Crosby Bubbles' note, Bucky and Gale reunite, and Gale asks Bucky if he wants to get married, and Bucky jokingly brings up this conversation he and Curt had (either in basic training, sometime before Curt crashed, or after Gale escaped) that the two of them discussed having a double wedding. They don't, as who would be Bucky's best man.

Crubbles- They also meet in basic training. They both meet because they both were denied to become pilots, Crosby because of his air sickness, and Bubbles because he once took the place of navigator and they just made him a navigator. They begin bunking together. And maybe this is a polyamorous Crosby/Jean thing, with both of them bisexual. There could be this whole thing of Bubbles being miserable because he has a crush Crosby. Jean, like Marge, visits with her girlfriend during basic training, and the two of them plus Crosby and Bubbles go to dinner.

While Croz is getting drinks, Bubbles witnesses Jean and her girlfriend kissing, and internally panics because in his eyes the wife of the man his best friend, the man he's in love with, is cheating on him with her friend. Croz comes back with drinks and they continue their conversation from before Croz went to get drinks. Bubbles tries to act normal, and waits until after Jean and her girlfriend leaves to tell Croz about what he saw. He has to wait a little because Jean wants to talk to Croz for a moment before they leave. When they do leave, and Jean is out of sight, both of them say that they have something to say to the other. Croz lets Bubbles go first, and he says "Your wife's cheatin' on you, Croz." And when asked to clarify, Bubbles says "She kissed her friend when you went to get drinks."

"Oh, you mean her girlfriend?" "What?" "Jean and I have an open relationship, that was her girlfriend. That's actually what I wanted to talk to you about,"

Crosby then goes to explain the reason why Jean came to visit them was to meet Bubbles, and approve of him, which is why the two of them talked afterwards. Bubbles asks what Jean would be approving of him for, and Crosby goes a bit red, his confidence leaving him as he looks at his feet.

"I wanted to ask you out," he mumbles and Bubbles stops breathing.

The two of them start a relationship, make comments about Bucky and Gale's (because maybe at this point in this story, they haven't started yet.) Also, maybe Crosby and Rosie are able to meet in basic training before Rosie goes to Texas, and they both talk to each other about their love lives/ wanting to ask out the men they're interested in, and also Nash is there. Before Rosie goes to Texas and before Ken gets shipped to England like a week before Bubbles and Harry do, they go on a double date while the two couples are on weekend passes. While on the double date, they come across a Photo Booth, both couples doing pictures.

They basically have a happy relationship, and they are able to have another weekend pass/ some down time, like maybe in Greenland or something. Then Bubbles plane goes down, and there are some parachutes out before the plane explodes, but not everyone sees them, which leads Crosby to think he's dead. Crosby has his "Hallucinating Edward Cullen" moment when he over works himself, and stays up for 72+hrs. Even after waking up after passing out, he still sees Bubbles, then he's forced to go to Oxford. Then the whole Sandra thing happens, and he's hallucinating Bubbles the entire time, and the maybe first time the two of them have sex, he sees Bubbles in her place, which is why he's desperate to keep seeing her.

While this is happening Crosby and Rosie are emotionally leaning on each other, Crosby because of Bubbles and Rosie because Ken broke up with him after finding out Rosie re-upped without consulting him. He also sees Ken doing what Crosby did when he found out that Bubbles "died" with not sleeping. Crosby ends up having a conversation with Ken, saying this lack of sleep will inevitably lead to bad things. Ken, in anger, accuses Crosby of sleeping with Rosie, which angers Crosby, but he swallows it, mostly, and he gives this Ken this speech about appreciating the ones you love while you still can, then he leaves. Ken does end up apologizing to Crosby when Ken when Rosie's fort is the only one to come back. Crosby and Rosie do end up talking with each other while Rosie's in the Flak house and Crosby's at Oxford, and he ends up talking Crosby down from going and seeing Sandra in more of a friendly sense again. He ends up talking to Sandra more about Bubbles, what they meant to each other, and why he pursued a relationship with her, and she's understanding, and they become friends

Then in stalag luft III, Bubbles gets processed, and meets up with Curt and dickie, as well as Gale then eventually Bucky. One of his bunkmates does proposition him, but Bubbles says no, he has a boyfriend waiting for him.

Crosby and Ken do end up connecting more the they find out that Rosie's plane had been shot down, and Crosby is the one that sits with Ken, comforting him when Winks can't, making sure he's eating and sleeping regularly, and also talking to him about both Rosie and Bubbles, because talking helps.

I don't remember when this happens in the story, but when Crosby does get sent home to Jean, instead of not telling her about Sandra like he did irl, and of the Edward Cullen Hallucinations he's been having of Bubbles. She's angry, but understanding, then they have sex and she gets pregnant.

Then with the moving between POW's, like I mentioned before Bubbles writes two notes that say the same thing and gives them to Bucky and Gale respectively in case he isn't able to escape (which he isn't). It's just this heartfelt letter saying in case no one saw, he escaped his plane before it blew up, and as of the day he's writing, he's still alive. He hasn't stopped thinking about Crosby, the thought of the possibility of escaping or being freed so that he can get back to Crosby has kept him alive for this long, and that he'd do his best to stay alive to do so.

Then he does eventually get freed, coming back with Bucky. When he gets back, before he's able to shower, Crosby pulls him into a hug and starts peppering kisses over his face, then finally his mouth, all the while Bubbles protesting, saying that he needs to shower.

They do shower together, and while in the shower, Crosby tells Bubbles everything. Bubbles is disappointed in Crosby for the Sandra thing, but makes sure that Crosby knows that he understands that grief his weird, and that's why he did what he did. He's also excited about Jean being pregnant, and is excited to be parent/uncle/ whatever Jean and Harry wants him to be to the child.

Rosielemmons- Robert at first only knows Ken as Lemmons and as a head of curly hair that occasionally sticks out of the forts. He finally goes to meet Ken because Nash is tired of hearing Rosie basically waxing poetic over this mechanic they've never met. So, Nash drags Rosie to where the planes are kept, asking Winks where Ken is. Winks points them to a plane that he says Ken is checking, and he drags Rosie over.

Ken is working on checking one of the of the last forts that needs to be checked when he hears two sets of footsteps approach. They yell up to him, and he yells back to give him a moment to finish his once over, as he is almost done. About 5-10 mins later, he's out of the plane and he has a bit of moment when he sees Rosie, not realizing that Rosie is also having a moment. Then he notices that there is another person is there, stuttering out a greeting/apology, then asking why they're there. The other person (Nash) introduces the two of them to Ken and says that his friend Rosie was curious how the planes work on a more mechanical level, and that he was the best person to ask. Then Nash leaves, leaving the two of them alone. Ken, not knowing what else to do, starts walking Rosie through the parts of the plane, in detail.

Rosie does his best to listen, asking questions when he hears something that he doesn't fully understand, but he keeps getting distracted by Ken's freckles, curls, eyes, lips, and all of that. By the time they're done, it's almost dinner, and Rosie almost asks Ken, who he still only knows as Lemmons, to join him for dinner, but Winks comes in, saying that it's time for dinner. So, they say they're goodbyes and they go to dinner. At dinner, Rosie keeps glancing at Ken, stopping when Ken catches him.

Nash teases him, and Rosie hits him on the back of the head, telling him that he looks forward to teasing him when he gets a crush. The next day, he visits Ken, again close to dinner, this time able to ask to eat with him. Ken blushes and agrees. At dinner, they're sitting as alone as they can. Ken tells Rosie his first name and rank, and they end up talking to each other so long they are asked to leave the mess hall so that they can lock it up.

Rosie walks Ken to his barracks, where they almost kiss because of an eyelash, but that doesn't happen because Winks walks out of the barracks to go look for Ken, only to him and Rosie standing there.

They end up exchanging notes, and meeting up when they can, and they start dating. They go do their weekend pass, Rosie spoiling Ken while they're there, and also doing the double date with Bubbles and Crosby. They do the Photo Booth stuff, the night ending not long after that.

A week or so later, Ken gets shipped over to England, going over on a boat. While on the boat, he writes a long letter to send to Rosie once he's there, maybe he also meets Rosie's sister at some point like he did in the Perpetual Motion's fic, sending a picture of the two of them with his long letter.

Then Rosie's stay in America extends as he as he and Nash go to Texas for teaching and stuff. Ken, Winks, and the other mechanics befriend the children that hang with them in the air field (?)

Then Rosie finally comes over, there's a dance, and Rosie gets excited when he sees the bucks, and his interactions with them are the same, but Ken is also there.

Their relationship gets strained with all of the missions and Ken's late nights, but they try. Ken eventually finds out that Rosie re-ups. They have a fight and it's messy. Rosie tries to get Ken to understand the guilt he'll feel if he leaves, and Ken tries to get Rosie the pain he'll feel loosing Rosie. There's yelling and crying, mostly from Ken, and Ken ends up ending the relationship, stomping on Rosie's heart, not because he wants to, but because he feels like Rosie has stomped on his. They both mope around, Rosie going into the emotional co-dependency thing with Crosby, and Ken gets it into his head that the reason why that Rosie re-upped was not because of the guilt he was talking about, but because he wanted to break up with him and get with Crosby. So, he starts doing what he saw Crosby do when Bubbles went down: barely sleeping and barely eating, mostly working. He does try to hook up with Winks, knowing that Winks used to have a thing for him, but Winks turns him down and tries to take care of Ken the best he can, which is usually bringing him food from mess, and the occasional blanket.

Then Crosby finds out and tries talking to him about it and its consequences. Ken's, of course, hostel towards Crosby, accusing him of sleeping with Rosie. He can tell that it pissed off Crosby, then he gets the "Cherish your loved ones" speech. Then Rosie's fort is the only one to come back. The two of them have a lightly awkward conversation and they both apologize for their words and actions, and Ken ends up finishing his paperwork that night with Rosie sleeping in the cot in his office. Rosie get's sent to the flak house, and one of the days, for like an hour or two, Ken gets to visit Rosie.

Then, a bit later, Rosie's plane gets shot down. Ken's emotional pain is so intense, it hurts him physically. He ends up coming to Crosby and asking him how he deals. They end up meeting up to talk about Bubbles and Rosie, and Crosby is obviously dad-ing him, which leads to Ken finding out about Jeans pregnancy. This lasts until Ken gets a letter from Rosie, saying where he is, what he said, and that he's on his way back. When Rosie finally returns, he tells Ken what he saw, and asks him if he wants to get married. He does. They end up discussing it when they can, and they agree that they're getting married on Ken's family farm, and then where they're going to live.

I haven't really thought about a curt/dickie longfic, though it may be nice to read one alongside the others.

I would also like to mention that jackharding would be an ideal additional ship also to appear in a longfic that focuses on the two of them. Like, the only thing I really thought about is that Jack is mad at Bucky for getting demoted, which lead Jack getting air exec, but the anger he feels for Bucky goes away when he actually meets Harding, the new CO.

Stalker!Lukas has definitely been on Twitter since day one, and he likes to lurk other profiles even if he doesn't follows them because he thinks knowledge is power, so eventually, one day he's on Stewy Hosseini's page and he's going over his whole feed, because Stewy is a private equity investor and well, you should always follow the money, and that's how he learns about reader, she's barely opened her account and hasn't even been verified, but since Stewy reblogs her and has full conversations with her, Lukas just knows she's well connected. Cut to him actually clicking on her profile and seeing her full name, so, he Googles her, back then he really doesn't know who the Roys are because he's in Sweden and it's a completely different world. Of course he spends the whole night reading about the family and their business. He reads her whole feed and finds every social media account she's ever had and reads everything over a few days, he downloads pictures, videos, anything he can get his mitts on, even content from her friends' accounts. He finds a private investigator in the US to follow her and keep him posted on her activities, Lukas basically puts the PI's kids through college with how much money he pays him over the span a few years. He slowly but surely starts scheming how to approach the Roys, since he had that PI on lock he also has so much info on the family that he knows when to attack and how to make it look like it happened naturally, even getting invited to Ken's party seems like it was not something that was years in the making. He knows he has just one chance to get her, so he makes sure he uses all of his knowledge to make her fall for him

I can just imagine Lukas hunched over his desk in a hoodie going through every piece of information he can find on her for days straight. He makes a ton of dummy accounts to keep things from being traced back to him, he goes far enough to use his technology skills to get into her friends private accounts and get more information that way. He has a whole folder on his desktop full of screenshots and photos and videos and articles. But the folder is just labeled with a heart emoji, not even her name (because he’s already that delusional about her.)

He finds a really well connected PI (maybe pn the dark web lol) to keep tabs on her in person, and he puts this man through the wringer. If he finds out she went to an event and the PI didn’t get pictures of her he gets so upset. Full on “WAKE UP ZOMBIES!!” mode. His obsession just grows and grows, to the point that he starts interacting with entertainment companies in America in order to begin entering the same social and business circles as her. He does it so well that things look natural. By the time he gets the invite to Kendall’s birthday party, he’s more than ready to finally seal the deal.

I’d go as far as saying that even their first meeting is ser up by him. He sees the scene that Roman and Shiv cause at not being let into the VIP area, sees you following Kendall up into the treehouse, and perfectly positions himself in what will be your direct line of sight. And he acts all casual and bored, pulling up the first game on his phone that he can find and quickly drinking his beer to make it look half-full. But when he sees you for the first time in person he’s freaking out internally and having to sneakily hide his growing erection.

It is 5:00 AM and I am awake having thoughts about a Daikenyako fic where Yolei asks Ken out and Ken is surprised because he did not think she still had feelings for him after all this time and Davis and he are kind of in love but they haven’t talked about it even though they both know. Ken tells Yolei he needs to think about it and goes to Davis and is like “Yolei asked me out.” And Davis is immediately like “Wow so are you gonna go out with her?” trying to be a good friend.

At which point Ken is confused and surprised because t h e y b o t h k n o w and says something like “You want me to? You’d be okay with that?” at which point Davis thinks Ken means because Davis has feelings for Yolei and later Davis talks to Yolei who probably called to freak out about asking Ken out and how he hadn’t said yes or no yet and Davis tells her he thinks Ken was worried Davis would be upset. Yolei makes a joke about them being married and Ken needing Davis’ permission to see someone else. Davis tries to change the subject by making light of Ken’s worry about his feelings for Yolei by denying he has ever had any.*

Yolei confesses to having had feelings for Davis’ probably since MaloMyotismon days and then registers what Davis said and is immediately offended Davis doesn’t have even a little crush on her - how dare he? Yolei would be a great girlfriend!

This absolutely devolves into an argument about the merits of dating one another and Ken gets dragged into it and they all slowly realize they like each other and should date. OR in an extreme version this culminates in them going on literal dates to prove they would be great significant others to one another and Ken is just there like “Um?? So I guess we are all dating now?” after like the third or fourth time they all end up “hanging out” on his or Davis couch somehow having a date night.

*also this probably takes place in the version of reality in which Davis is Ace and spent waaaaaay too much time in his youth overcompensating and fixating on having feelings for Kari. I like to think maybe it was Yolei who helped him come to terms with it all and that is when Davis first developed feelings for her.
