TRY AGAIN LATER
it's like. well. its several things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Plutarch's Crassus, trans. Warner)
and also this
Tumblr media
(ibid.)
that compliment sounds like an insult, baby.
anyway, there's a fun kind of eroticism in being given everything, in taking things that aren't yours without any real consequence, in climbing towards becoming a Roman Alexander, only for one man to deny you, over and over and over again, at every turn. Sulla tried, Crassus did it better. who would put a butcher in their place? who else knows you well enough to do it? who else can match you step for step like this? doesn't it feel like a kind of intimacy, a kind of—
it's also about the 'even sulla kissed my sword/so you want me on my knees too?' innuendo was too good to pass up. that was actually the first line I wrote, I figured out the rest of this to justify making a comic with it
and finally! the sword line is referencing/playing off of Lucan's Pharsalia a little bit because it fucks hard
Tumblr media
(Lucan's Pharsalia, trans. Jane Wilson Joyce)
EDIT: oh, and that's a public domain anatomical illustration of a heart. you know how it is with love and hate.

Harry Kim saying Naomi is lucky to be born on Voyager and that he would have given "anything" to have her life when he was a kid...
Tumblr media
#He sees NO downsides????#Also I love how Neelix was yelling and panicked and Harry was like 'haha ok buddy. Hey this little guy is ugly huh~? See ya later!'#absolutely unbothered and not the least bit curious - love him <3#saw someone post about how they don't like 'once upon a time' bc Neelix doesn't tell Naomi right away about her mother .... bro.#c'mon. Anyway I love Neelix and him trying so hard to shield Naomi from bad things / upset bc he KNOWS how fucking painful#it is to lose a family DID make me tear up.#Also Naomi in that burned-down forest (symbolic of innocence?) was a kickass visual. Neelix telling her about his family and Naomi trying#to comfort HIM??? SHE'S SUCH A GOOD KID MAN....Neelix making her a flotter doll was also v cute#OH AND Naomi going 'I Am Borg...' and Neelix going '~??? No you're not~!!!' and Naomi giggling...added NOTHING to the#episode - as it should be!! Sometimes you've just gotta have a really cute silly moment <3#Tuvok: [says something] / Tom: Nice bedside manner Tuvok =_=#Tuvok: [about to say the most beautiful comforting words you've ever heard one parent say to another] And I took that personally.#Love how Naomi is scared of Seven at first...girl that's your roommate.#HEHEH she starts off the series scared of her but by the end she's her little buddy and also her intern#but yeah never forget that Harry Kim can and will say the most unhinged things but so casually that no one will really clock it#NEVER forget that he says he remembers.....either being an infant or his own birth - both WILD to me#Harry Kim lowkey loves destiny and being special and the idea of 'chosen ones' and the narrative even though he will fight it all if it#harms the ones he loves#Harry: (guy from an alternate timeline who replaced the dead Naomi with the alive one from his own) That kid's living the dream <3

#both monologues are harrowing pieces of SS trying to overcome his pride after a battle#but while the E26 monologue is about a won battle with a great cost attached to that victory#with that victory not being entirely felt precisely because of the cost but SS *wants* to feel it regardless#the dead people stand in front of him he sees them he senses them he acknowledges them but then he moves forward anyway#fixating on the pride of the victory he also senses but wants to beat to the ground and *quickly* before it fully consumes him#so he buries himself to get that touch with his own humanity and his own mortality back#(and he does get it back as much as he'll distance from it doubling down on his role as a padişah until it's too late)#(it's no wonder his final E139 monologue bears some resemblance to his E26 ones from the helmet he wears to the color filter of the scenes#and him acknowledging his mortality again but sitting on the throne anyway)#the E40 monologue is about a lost battle that will bring a great cost with itself if they keep fighting#and on one head yeah SS now fully recognizes that cost and this is why he stops he *retreats* taking care of his people#seemingly having quenched his ego and pride#but on the other hand it took him the defeat to realize all that with him pushing further and further before#in spite of the risky conditions and notice how he wants to stay alive to evade death this time#with that rather pointing to his ego and pride having risen *more* than last time (he even proclaims the expedition a victory in the end)#all the while there's still enough (or rather more) awareness to hold himself back#also something about death vs. love (both quenching pride) in the monologues#of course tying to their respective batches of episodes that focus on either death or love in some way (Leo and Sadika's deaths;#(Hürrem's absense and horse and its death) linked together but what dominates in the respective monologues depends on what SS sees as#mattering in the moment; until love and death and companionship finally come together in the E139 monologue but SS embraces power anyway#also something about the returning motive in that context: SS's “returning is not weakness but maturity Süleiman”#vs. Ibrahim's earlier “returning is not an ability but necessity Ibrahim” (about his past and Parga in particular)#one can return anytime he wants to but refrains to and has to deal with having to return on a bigger level#the other wants to return but can't unless a reason emerges and permission is given and he completely takes in the return#magnificent century#muhteşem yüzyıl#muhtesem yuzyil#sultan suleiman#sultan suleyman

Head empty thoughts full of the antigone incest essay
#genuinely think it was the reason why i like it so much right now#like. ive always loved me some codependency in ships and like incest especially from messed up families is the epitome of that#and oooh boy does antigone have it in spade#spades#fuck sorry its 1:30 am#anw the whole#'the true tragedy's core is about love#antigone is ismene's heromene and this is why she wants to save her#yet antigone's heramenos is polynices who is long dead#and to meet again w her heramenos she is willing to die#for due to how deeply incestuous the thebian family is#its impossible for antigone (and ismene too!) to find an heramenos who doesnt fully share her blood#(and thus haemon (whose name literally means man of blood) who is her cousin from the non incestuous part of her family#cannot be ever her heramenos)#they also went on a tangent about cannibalism as a metaphor for incest because#the closest a person can be is either within the womb (both as siblings or parent/child)#or in someone elses stomach#and chronos eating his own kids is an extension of that thought#(and also as a way to say 'every generation will get swallowed by time kids will turn into adults and their children too etc#and its interesting how this again correlates with antigone. she outright refuses it because her own family structure is distorted#mother had children with her son. their kids are both siblings and uncles/aunts to each other#a mistake that will never *repeat*#and therefore antigone is left all alone. yes. oedipus is still alive. exiled and blind but alive#but jocasta is dead and he sure as hell wont have children with jocasta again#therefore making it unable for him to unnaturally#concieve another son who will fill the void that polynices (and eteocles!) have left in antigone's heart#goood sophocles. if there is an afterlife i want to make out with you sloppy style

(copying over a ridic long twitter thread where I rambled nonsensically about Rolan post-Lorroakan fight, don't mind me. I have even more thoughts since I read through the Dialogue Parser and saw how his behavior changes if either Cal or Lia, OR BOTH, die that has me even more gdkghkhkh ok i guess i rambled about that in the tags, anyway, i'll copy those bluesky posts over later)
didn't make it to HoH but I did beat Lorroakan finally (I just had to change Lae'zel to battlemaster and give her goading strike and she carried me the whole way lmao) and ROLAN... ROLAN.... ROLAAAAAAAAAAN... i am 100% satisfied with how his story concludes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm still kinda surprised how much a fairly minor side character, whose death in the game has negligible impact on anything, stil got to me so bad... the way you can tell from the first scene that he's deeply insecure + deeply stressed over responsibility for his siblings' safety
(instead of trusting his siblings to be able to watch out for themselves as much as him). And he covers it all up with really embarrassing self-aggrandizement, just so conceited, gets mad at TavDurge for showing him up in a way that makes him look weak and incapable.
THE WAY HES AN ANGRY ABUSIVE DRUNK IN ACT 2 AND EVEN when you rescue Cal and Lia he's still so angry and yelling, and Lia is too. i get the impression Lia was the one who always looked out for Cal and Rolan as kids so she has her own issues with needing to be the Strong one
and Rolan is chafing over being the weak adopted brother and has developed even WORSE issues over being the Strong one, and neither can concede ground on who has is the most responsible sibling, and the dynamic is all fucked up and Cal is the only one trying to find some balance
neither of them ever learned they can express they were terrified for the other's sake, and terrified of being too weak to look out for the other, without wrapping it up in protective anger and finger-pointing. it's just ;________;
it really hit hard when he actually apologizes for the way he acted while horrifically drunk in act 2 lol... but then if you stand around him and Lia are still arguing. they really just need to hug it out. cal sitting off to the side desperately wishing they'd hug it out
anyway the fact Rolan is so conceited and assured of his own power and greatness and ability to handle Everything On His Own, that he desperately convinces himself his new master beating him for no good reason constantly has a meaning, he just has to survive to prove himself...
and survive to provide for his siblings (who can't even live with him because lorroakan is that much of a dick???), and is just, a shadow of how he was in act 2, angry and aggressive and ready to take on an army himself for cal and lia's sake, just gets to me sooooooo bad. god.
I just think about what kind of mental gymnastics he must be doing since he got to the Tower, feeling so angry but needing to square everything happening with the image he built up of this guy he HERO WORSHIPPED FOR YEARS, trying to just focus on the needs of his siblings... ugh
And then how it hits all of his insecurities with weakness, of being the one who rescues and protects others instead of needing the rescuing and protecting. Surviving near-certain-death twice only to end up stuck in an abusive apprenticeship. god how stupid must he have felt
(and when i say that i mean that with all the empathy and sympathy in the world, mind). anyway i'm rambling. i really love rolan. i really love how happy he is in the convo after defeating lorroakan, how he SMILES and seems so excited to finally have cal and lia LIVE WITH HIM

It is pretty weird how, despite John Byrne being agreed to be one of the most openly wretched big names in comics and said wretchedness shaped his work, a lot of people 'also' think him 180-ing how Superman works still ruled and should stick. I'm actually a only a mild Byrne hater, I think early post-crisis had some good ideas and can enjoy plenty from it, but if not entirely bad, it's in its own way just as dated and removed from what character is as anything from Silver Age.
yeah, it's interesting bc even people who hate john byrne's work generally keep at least some of his changes. mark waid is kind of an exception -- if he had his way he'd basically throw out everything post-crisis, which is more or less what he's doing in world's finest and last days -- but there are a lot of byrne changes that even some of the best modern writers still pretty heavily embrace.
i know a lot of pre-crisis fans, for example, strongly dislike the switch from clark kent being the "mask" to being the "real" him, but on the flip side, i know a lot of people who like the idea of clark kent being more "authentic" as a counterpoint to batman.
i'm a pretty outspoken byrne hater myself, but i also don't think all of his changes were inherently bad. most of my favorite superman stories use some mix of pre- and post-crisis lore, and i some of byrne's changes did serve to make superman a more relatable character (at least in better hands than his). finding a balance, for example, between clark kent being an alien from a dead planet and a kansas farmboy trying to do the right thing is not only entirely possible, but kind of a necessary part of the character in most modern superman stories.
honestly my biggest problem reading byrne, other than the fact that it's deeply conservative in ideology even compared to other comics from the era and the man can't write romance to save his life (which, imo, you have to be good at if you want to write superman), is just that a lot of his stuff is... horrifically boring.

@beatingheart-bride
Concern now melted into confusion: He wouldn’t believe her if she told him? What could she possibly mean by that? His brow furrowed a little, unsure of this answer, but nevertheless, he resolved to continue to comfort and reassure the woman he loved, as he invited her to sit down on one of the many benches, still holding her close as he did so. Emily’s comfort was the most important matter to him now, as he demonstrated with his embrace, kissing her cheek as he held her, his free hand holding hers comfortingly.
“I promise that I would believe you,” he assured her gently, his voice tender, perhaps more tender than it had ever been-he knew how important it was for Emily to be heard, to be listened to, to be believed (considering her parents refused to believe her when she said Nicholas was not to be trusted, refused to listen when she said he was only after her money, refused to hear her out when she said she did not want to marry this boor, this was a very important matter to her), and so, he swore to make sure she knew this, that she could trust him to both hear and believe her. “Whatever you tell me, I promise you, I will not doubt you. I don’t know what you’re about to tell me, but I swear to you, Emily, I swear: I will not disbelieve you.”
He punctuated this with a kiss to her hand, pressing it to his chest, so that she could feel his heartbeat. He made a promise, a very serious one, one he was going to keep, and he wanted her to know it.

Court Story Idea
TW: the Joker
Where the Joker is being prosecuted for his crimes within the Ghost Zone and each side (defendant and plaintiff) is able to choose the lawyer for the other side. So that means that the Joker is able to choose an attorney for the plaintiffs AKA Jason, along with other victims, both alive and dead. (For drama’s sake, let’s say that the Justice League is there too, along with the younger generation of heroes.)
When everyone hears this, they’re like ??? Because isn’t that just going to help the Joker??
And the Joker, realizing this, is looking for the most weakest, most vulnerable person to exploit within this ghostly court room and he looks at the back of the room…
And finds Jazz, who’s sitting in a corner behind King Phantom, head down, trying her best to be unnoticed, nose in her papers as she’s writing down what’s said as the court reporter.
And the Joker picks her.
Nobody understands why everyone from the Ghost Zone is suddenly either 1) flabbergasted, 2) completely delighted, or 3) laughing so hard that it’s like they’re about to die a 2nd time.
Because the Joker chose the only person in the room with an actual law degree who is not only the big sister of the literal Ghost King, but also loves children, is fiercely protective of them, and most importantly, has never gotten the opportunity to show off her hard earned degrees in criminology, psychiatry, or law until now.
(Inspired by this post where someone says that Jazz would be the court reporter)
