1 day left. New cards just dropped, can't wait to try out those Dryan Lifeborne, they could do some work with the old Elf Wizards
Fair warning, this is what I'll be talking about until the campaign ends on November 15th. In short this is our one chance to bring back a fantastic board game and I really want it to happen. The first hurdle is the biggest, but should this succeed, Heroscape has the potential to be bigger and better than ever.
The new and improved site for the revival of Heroscape. Now with additional info about the exact contents, how to build a map, how to play the game, and links to the WIP rulebook PDF and cards page. If you don't know, Heroscape is a tabletop strategy miniatures game with fully modular terrain designed to build 3D battlefields. It's meant to be a more accessible alternative to other expandable games like Warhammer and DnD. No need to build the models, just open up the box, build a battlefield, draft an army, and get to rolling dice.
If you're a fan of tabletop strategy, rpg, and miniature games, seriously consider backing this. I realize it's $250 and not everyone has that kind of cash laying around, but considering the insane amount of stuff in here, it's absolutely worth it. There will literally never be a better deal from companies like Games Workshop, and most of their good deals don't even come with everything you need to simply sit down and play.
I fully believe in the potential of Heroscape not just as a game, but as an intellectual property. With the premise of warriors being summoned from across time and space to fight on an alien world, literally anything is possible. The old range had medieval knights, robots, samurai, infesting aliens, elves, dragons, vampires, Matrix-style agents, vikings, the list goes on. They even had a crossover with Marvel and Dungeons & Dragons.
On a personal note, I fucking love this game. Spotted the first set, Rise of the Valkyrie, when we stopped in a big box store on a whim, and was instantly obsessed. It fully captured my imagination, and proceeded to do so for the next 6 years with expansion after expansion until it was discontinued in 2010. This game had such a big impact on my life that when our house was under threat of a wildfire, my Heroscape collection was one of the two items I decided to take with me (fortunately the fire didn't make it to our house and we returned safely). I chose Heroscape over Warhammer, over most of my electronics, and over my artwork. I want Heroscape to continue to capture people's imaginations, affect lives even remotely like it affected mine.

Heroscape!
It sure is one of THE battles of all time. Kid me thought it was the coolest thing ever and my brother agreed, and together we'd combine our allowance and buy another little expansion every week in a terrifying prelude to my dangerous warhammer addiction.
Space valkyries discover portals that let them gain power and summon nerds from across the universe, and decide to fight each other over these portals with their summoned nerds abducted from throughout the timestream. When the starter box contains a dragon, an orc riding a T-rex, foolish samurai warriors, and a robot named Deathwalker 9000 you know they thought out the appeal of this. Are the rules any good for the board game? Eh, good kiddie fair, somehow still more fun than warhammer, not the best but not the worst. Were the minis any good? About on par with blind bag DnD stuff. But the tiles! You see these things?
Its a 3d fucking hex map! DnD players' dream! Many good wargame tool. Heroscape has its play all done on a big 3d map where height advantage gives you bonus attack and def and climbing costs extra movement and models with flying ignore this. And where water tiles are slippy so you gotta stop in them unless you're flying. Okay, interacting with the map was a thing, but a bit basic. It was mostly either ignoring the penalties or a slight increase in stats. BUT! Heroscape died a decade ago, and now its coming back. And whoever is making it now knows what they're doing, because-
The new lads they're spoiling include stuff like modifying the map. The modular map the game is played on, is modular! People throwing more stuff on the table, taking it off. THIS! I like this. Pointing and excited. Even more than I am that Heroscape is coming back and I don't need to use a 3d printer to replace my cracking old heroscape tiles. Funny modular map rules! Give me a lady that has a portable wall and I am sold.

We recently backed a project on Kickstarter and I wanted to ramble about that.
(This is not paid promotion and I have no association with the team making this project. This is just me gushing about something I think is cool.)
I grew up playing Heroscape. This game was my childhood. If you don't know what Heroscape is, here you go:
It was a simple tactical minis tabletop battle game where you make a team of different heroes with their own unique abilities. But what really sold this game was the landscape you could build yourself.
I used to have a table that sat out on our front porch that was filled with Herocape stuff as I constructed and deconstructed and reconstructed my maps.
And I didn't just have the starter set you see above. (Above is actually several starter sets. You don't get quite that many pieces from one box. I'm guessing it's three starter sets since there are six ruins, and Heroscape only came with two.) No. I had the ice set, the volcano set, the castle set, a Marvel set. The second starter set with swampy environment.
Heroscape was an amazing part of my childhood. Then Hasbro let it die.
They tried to revive it in the form of Arena of the Planeswalkers, a knock-off with a flat cardboard battlefield. But it got cancelled after two expansions. They're going to try again, but I have no faith that they'll stick with the Heroscape revival.
Which brings us to SOURCE.
SOURCE is a hex system made by indie-developers who themselves were Heroscape fans and inspired by Heroscape. Rather than connecting at the sides like Heroscape, the SOURCE tiles are held together by edges as you can see here. (I sure hope they don't mind me lifting the images from their kickstarter.)
A disadvantage to this is that you lose some of the modularity in being able to build in any shape you want. The advantage though is that it allows for terrain to easily be added and removed throughout gameplay.
(They're also working on special grip mats for those who just really want to build in any shape they want without being confined to shapes of the edges.)
And in my opinion, the detail looks way better than Heroscape ever did. Just compare the lava tiles above to Heroscape's:
There's no contest.
The SOURCE hexes aren't just the same thing in different colors. They're actual works of art.
And I'm not saying this to put Heroscape down. Like I said, it was my childhood and was fantastic for its time.
The game on the Kickstarter, Timestrike, is very similar to Heroscape. But with so much more stacked onto Heroscape's foundation.
Characters have move, range, attack and defense like Heroscape. You have the six-sided dice where three sides are swords and two are shields. Only now there is a special lucky sword and a lucky shield. These aren't relevant for most characters, but some characters will have abilities where they'll gain some bonus on lucky rolls.
If that's not enough, there's also a Contest mechanic where you can push another player's figure. This is great if someone is on a ledge and you want to cause them fall damage, or if you just want to steal the high ground from them to increase your attack.
You can also mine materials, build roads with the materials you mined, and go fishing for buffs. (Literally. You can stand near water and try to fish. If you succeed, you take a card from the fishing deck.)
There are wild monsters you can try to tame. There are even large figures you can mount and ride. See this guy:
That's a base on his back for you to place a smaller miniature on and ride him around!
The game is centered around not just beating each other, but also fighting a boss called a Sentience with space for three figures on its back.
(Note: the Gorilla Brute is not part of this first set, and will likely come with a future expansion.)
The sentience takes full advantage of the destructible terrain, leveling any space he lands on.
And they're tossing in solo and co-op rules for people who don't want to fight each other and just want to fight the boss alone, or to team up to fight the boss.
Oh! And it comes with STACKABLE WALLS!
That's a small thing, but it's a cool thing. (Okay, this is technically a stretch goal for $200,000 that they haven't put on the official Kickstarter, but $200K feels likely to me.)
The creators also seem genuinely committed to making this a reality and keeping it going for a long time, with talk of several expansions in the pipeline, introducing more playable characters, more rideable Brutes, and more bosses which will each have their own abilities and their own solo/co-op modes.
And possibly boats.
That's a picture of a prototype boat that can fit three figures and will NOT be included in this Kickstarter. But it is planned for a future expansion.
I don't know if the boats will come to fruition. I don't know if they'll look like that when they are released or if they'll look completely different by then since that would be a long way off.
But I appreciate knowing that there are plans to make this a long-term investment. I'm not worried that the creators will give up on SOURCE and Timestrike like Hasbro did Heroscape and Arena of the Planeswalkers.
And it's not just Timestrike. The SOURCE terrain can be purchased on its own and the SOURCE system is intended to be used for a variety of games by different creators. And it's already naturally compatible with Heroscape, Arena of the Planeswalkers, Battletech and other hex-based games.
I am incredibly excited and hopeful for the future of this project!
Here's the Kickstarter for anyone who wants to see more of this.
And here's a video review going over the Timestrike rules and how it plays:

Marro Juggernaut field test My son and I played a game of Heroscape so he could take the Juggernaut model out for a spin. We built forces of 1200 points each, well, mine was going to be 1200 but my daughter wanted to play too. I made her my teammate and let her pick what she wanted and I would make a force out of what points remained. She took four dragons as she really likes dragons…which meant I had points for a few Highlanders and some heroes, hrm. My son decided to tackle my daughter’s dragons with the Juggernaut alone while everything else came streaming towards my meager band. He did pretty well against all the big scalies but they did wear him down over time. That 6 def is a bit ridiculous and he may get revised in the future. Sometimes we play Heroscape as a TTG without the plastic hex battlemaps as they take too long to setup and takedown so we’ve converted everything to inches instead of spaces.

dashcon adepticon 2024 was a fun time! only went for one day, but that was more than enough to see everything we were interested in
I'm so happy heroscape is coming back even after the crowdfunding campaign a few years back failed, apparently the new expansions are releasing this summer and are compatible with all the old stuff. I also got to glimpse a few Armada games and the prize table for tournaments. if they're still running next year, I might participate just to try and win some of those special game pieces
everything pictured below is from black site studios, and they look like they have some pretty cool games. I'll probably pick up their space game, lunar, next year when I have a bit more spending money. they have a bunch of other games too, and were selling models of the nerv crew from evangelion, which i couldn't believe
and since I've been on an Eva kick, I obviously grabbed a set for myself!
