The cultural erasure that accompanied conquest took the form of forcefully alienating Indigenous people from their traditional diets. Therefore, decolonisation necessarily involves preserving, reclaiming and reviving these diets, which are organically connected to the land. Palestinian feminist scholar Lila Sharif’s work, arguing that Palestinians everywhere sustain their attachment to the homeland through practices linked to the olive tree, is a valuable contribution to the study of decolonial practices. As an estimated 80 per cent of small‑scale farming and family cooking globally is done by women, food sovereignty directly empowers women, just as its loss negatively impacts them. To quote Indigenous activist and economist Winona LaDuke: ‘Native women are here, and we birthed this place. We created the agrobiodiversity of 8,000 varieties of corn, and a multitude of beans, squash and melon varieties that are now touted by big agriculture and the foundation.’ In Palestine, women have historically foraged for the bounty of herbs and leafy greens that are an important part of Palestinian cuisine, and which provided them with the means to secure social and economic independence. They are heavily involved at all stages of agriculture, as growers, harvesters, processors and traders. Today, about a third of women in the West Bank are the only income‑earners in their households. Going out in small groups to the fields at dawn, they expertly gather seasonal herbs, making sure they leave roots and seeds behind, to ensure the next season’s harvest. They are finely attuned to the short‑lived seasons that make for the hyper seasonal culinary calendar – blink and you miss it.

the food of tomorrow is in the seeds of today.
hello. i'm elizabeth. tomorrow's garden is my seed farm that i grow in charlotte, north carolina.
why seeds?
because growing your own food is amazing, delicious, enticing, and fulfilling. but it only helps with the here and now. what about food for later? how can you make sure that no matter what life throws at you, you have food for tomorrow?
i started this farm in 2019 when i came to the realization that no matter what happens, at the end of the day, what matters is that there is food in you and your family's belly. i initially started to grow and sell vegetables and herb plants, and then when shit hit the fan the next year, i realized we need to prepare for the future, too. that's when i started learning how to save seeds. i now grow and sell plants and seeds at the local farmer's market. if you're in the charlotte, north carolina area, then check out my instagram where i post what i'll have at the market every week and come say hi.
one of the ways to make sure your plants succeed year after year is to save seeds. the parent plant takes what it learned from it's term and passes those genetics through their seeds. how crazy is that?! so many people think that they can not grow any food because they either source their plants from big box stores (that rant is for another day) or source their seed from a commercial grower. it's not them, it's captialism that's making growing food so difficult. i highly recommend sourcing from a seed farm as close to you as possible and eventually getting into the habit of saving your own. if you grow in or next to zone 8b, then i do offer my seeds for sale on my website to get you started out.
well, if i'm saving and selling seeds, then why not use that as a good excuse to do my favorite type of art, too? linocut or stamping has always been my favorite medium, even when i was little. the fact that no matter how hard you try, nothing will ever match, and there will be mistakes. a lesson to be reminded of in life, too. i post my artwork - in progress and final - as well as my farmer's market setup on my pinterest profile.
as far as for here on tumblr, i'm not here to sell. i'm here to get inspiration and gain knowledge from other gardeners and to offer the same. this is where i will post my progress as the seasons come and go, what mistakes i made, and what i've learned in the hopes of helping others. my ama is open if you have any questions, especially about seeds or getting a garden nursery business up and running. information shouldn't be behind a paywall, and i never will do so. so let's get growing together.
💚🌱☀️

The first big herb harvest came early this year, and all the rain this spring meant rampant growth. The mugwort is 6 feet tall right now, the skullcap is aggressively trying to take over, and the yarrow for once is not the most abundant grower in my garden.

Shout-out to the Grower's Exchange, which is new to me, for not only the good selection that got me to order in the first place, but I think the best packaging I've seen to date:
Three layers of this custom cardboard insert. Wouldn't work for all plants and wasn't ideal for the Cardinal flower that got a touch squished, but the end result here was this:
Fresh, healthy, and intact.
Now to be clear, this order purely represents me being impatient and "lashing out" at one thing I CAN effect because I've been so frustrated with my health. I could have better results for far less money by growing from seed--but it'll take another half a year. So since I had money, kind of, I spent it. These plants all look so nice and vigorous that I think it'll work in my favor but the smart bet would absolutely be to plant these seeds next Jan/Feb and put them out come spring.
That said---feverfew! Cardinal flower! More echinacea (that's one where you need a lot because the active ingredients concentrate in the roots)! Wood betony! Hardy Rosemary (I hope! Hardier than the last one anyhow)! Winter savory! Wild bergamot! Some of these are none too easy to find.
So that's lovely. With these, plus the annual herbs come spring, the available space in my front garden will be full. I need to put down more cardboard and mulch.

Fascinating flora, special edition.
White Sage
I am still doing a regular post about sage in general, but as a conservationist and student of ethnobotany, I wanted to address the conservation status and history of salvia apiana in particular.
White sage is endemic to Southern California and parts of Northern Baja, and is a valuable medicinal and cultural resource to indigenous populations who were forcibly relocated to these areas. Today, the majority of white sage is cultivated by indigenous Americans on protected land.
Smudging refers to a variety ceremonies that involve the burning of sacred herbs. The British, Spanish, and French colonizers started to relocate indigenous people, to wash away their culture, take their children, and erase their languages. Smudging is an English word that was used to generalize and belittle a widely held set of spiritual practices, and has now been reclaimed by many indigenous communities.
The use of this plant by non native people, and the misappropriation of the word ‘smudging’ came much later, around the time the first legal protections were established to protect the remaining people and culture. “In the 1960s, the hippie movement co-opted the use of white sage and evolved into the New Age Movement.” (Ramirez, Rose & Small, Deborah)
The popularity of white sage has only gotten higher, and with a boom in demand, illegal harvesting of the plant has become all to common a practice. “With very few commercial growers of white sage (Salvia apiana), the vast majority of products are wild-harvested.” (Ramirez & Small)
“What I learned when I was in California and visited the Etiwanda Preserve was that it is the epicenter of the current commercial harvest.” (Leopold, Susan).
“What is important to stress is that this underground sage mafia is not ethical or sustainable wildcrafting as it is portrayed in hipster IG accounts and stores! The scale of white sage commercial trade on the Internet and demand in China is alarming” (Leopold).
“I was invited by the owner of a white sage company to meet at the Etiwanda Preserve in March of 2019; he wanted to show his sustainable harvesting methods. I quickly pulled out my phone to show him that it was against the law to do so, and that recent arrests had been made. He carried on as if that was not the case” (Leopold).
The current elemental status of white sage is G4, which means ‘apparently secure.’ This rating has not been reviewed since June nineteenth, 2002. The lack of updated information on the plants range and occurrences have kept it off multiple endangered species lists.
The article referencing a book by Ramirez and Small, published in spring of 2020, evaluate that 50% of white sage has been eradicated due to urbanization.
I am not native, I can’t speak for any native people. All of what I have stated here is a summary or quotation of the words of indigenous activists, ethnobotanists, and conservationists. My hope here is to give a factual overview of the situation and provide direction to people more knowledgeable than myself.

In the languages of the folks that inhabited Mars eons ago, there was no separation between fish and beast. Instead, there were Slimefish of the Sea, and Slimefish of land, with the creatures like goolas that came out of the sea to mate on the shores somewhere in between. That’s because it is commonly known that the majority of the beasts, walking the surface of Mars were created by Mafa, who changed certain species of fish, for the purpose of it to inhabit growers and planes created by the sponge-wizards, and their teachers — Yulakai.
And so they created bakai – an animal to roam the grasslands and the Forrest ages, eating herbes – like it’s ancestor Kelpfish – that leaved in the Forrest’s of the sea grass using its body shape and colouring to camouflage from predators. The remains of it in a body of Bakai, is it’s til shaped like a leaf of a kelp.
Another herbivore however fearsome creation of Mafa, were the Wooper-Hogs, descendant from the creature known by the inhabitants of the shore regions as a reef-wooper. Their fangs are great to dig through the soil – searching for tasty acorns, and roots. However, they are also great to severely mutilate anybody who comes near their territory or offspring – little wooplets.
Gramms as furious as the grammfish are known for hunting in packs, with one giant Alphagramm, surrounded from ten to thirty smaller hounds – right about a half of his size.
The only thing gramms fear is probably orcos – named after the terrible giants from the legend this creature is known to be one of the most furious monsters that inhabit marsian forests and mountain ranges. However mighty orcos is actually descendant from the harmless beings known baku-baku – large animal known to eat only the mollusk known as waternut – for that purpose it developed massive powerful beak – these trait was also taken by their terrifying ancestors…

This sort of falls under Day 2's Magic Prompt since it's a theory on possible powers for Elain. Contains TOG spoilers.
I was having a conversation with @acourtdelaluna a few weeks back and we were discussing how SJM was very confident in her response to a specific interview question, that there would definitely be more ACOTAR babies.
Something about that didn't make sense to us though. Was she referring to a possible Epilogue she's going to write for all the characters? Or did she mean we're going to see it in an actual book like we did with Feyre? The entire spin-off is building towards this huge battle so how can there be another pregnancy for any of the main characters? It doesn't seem logical to have a pregnant female running around in battle.
But I realized today, Elain is the PERFECT character to end up pregnant in the series.
Rhysand is a warrior
Nesta is a warrior
Feyre is a warrior
Mor is a warrior
Gwyn is a warrior
Az is a warrior
Cassian is a warrior
Emerie is a warrior
Lucien is a warrior
The only main character who has actively turned away from everything to do with fighting in battle is Elain. She did not want a weapon and only accepted one when Feyre reassured her she wouldn't need to use it. And while she did use it to save her sister, she returned it "and didn't look back". She is the only character who was written to completely shun the Illyrian fighting leathers. In Silver Flames, SJM made it a point to remind us that "cruelty bothers her". I could be wrong but I don't think there are any clues that Elain's future is going to be that of a warrior in battle so where does that leave her? When everyone else is fighting in the war, what role will Elain play?
In the TOG series, Yrene was a healer. A healer who understood what plants could be used to create salves to aid in healing:
"Elide finished the tin of salve from her pocket, Eucalyptus, Yrene had said, naming a plan Elide had never heard of, but whose smell - sharp and yet soothing - she very much enjoyed. Beneath the pungent herb lay lavender, rosemary, and something else mixed in with the opaque, pale liniment."
I know it's not a theory many agree with but.... there is the possibility that Elain had something to do with healing Cassian after the Kings attack. We don't yet have proof of this though there are lines that could support it.
Aside from small clues that are maybe hinting at Elain's future, one of the biggest things we know as fact is her love of gardening and gardens aren't just about flowers.
Elain has a gentle nature, war and cruelty bother her, she is a grower of things (plants are needed for salves), and she rushed to Cassian when he was injured while Nesta chose to leave Cassian's side in order to decapitate the King.
I can't think of any character who is more suited to end up a healer than Elain.
Not only was Yrene was a healer (who played an important role in the defeat of the Valg), but in the final book with the final battle, she was pregnant.
Elain also ending up pregnant makes such perfect sense to me because it creates a valid reason for her to not have to fight with weapons while the others do. And if she does turn out to be a healer, that would be her contribution to the war itself.
Side note: In my mind Lucien has a breeding kink, full stop. The male who has such control in every single aspect of his life, not seeking revenge against his father and brothers, restraining himself when there are times he had every right to go off on Nesta, Feyre, Rhys, Tamlin, is going to go absolutely feral when he and Elain finally accept their bond and he's not going to give a damn about contraceptive teas.

Main Dami thought, including specific sub thoughts!
Doing any type of skin, body or hair care with him turns into him doing them for you. 1) he wants you to rely on him and show you that he can take care of you, and one way he slowly starts that process is insisting on "pampering" you. 2) he thinks he knows best and the proper products you should be using. Alot of organic products that are handmade or prestige and luxury that you couldn't dream of affording, the hand made ones are from his mother I feel like, with your personal preferences in mind.
-i feel like he would see you shaving with a disposable razor or even just a plastic one and be appalled. He will shave you with a straight razor, which he's very good at. Steady hands and all that blade training coming in handy. He would also learn how to wax/sugar if that's what you prefer. If you insisted, and I mean full blown conniption fit several times, he will call someone to privately do it. It might be someone from the league.....it might not. Who's to say?
It doesn't matter what hair texture or style you have, he WILL be giving you a scalp massage and oiling it. He will also be putting in whatever hair products you use for you. He's desperately touchstarved so he loves the fact that the scents he associates with you linger on his hands, even if they're not his preferred scents.
-i feel like he would have a fairly clean scent to him. Nothing to musky or sweet. Some sort of herb and tea mixture. Like a matcha/green tea with a bit of honey, amber, chamomile and maybe even a bit of dark cocoa/chocolate to bring that initial almost bitterness back. Well balanced, green florals with a tad bit of sweetness that doesn't get cloying and a hint of earthiness. Uses a plain peppermint lip balm.
Also the process of explaining things like everything showers or girl dinner/math to him would be similar to explaining what a cell phone is to a Victorian child.
Much love from Damian anon (I really need to figure out a shorter sign off, even just Damian anon is still long as frick)
god this kinna hit the spot i needed the relaxation today EHEHEH... DAMIAN SPA DAY.... IM HAVING IDEAS
as a grower of body hair thank you for the clean shave dami 🙏🏾 (kinda a fantasy for a guy to shave me with no disgust . im sure that stems from some trauma of being a woman <3 we live in a society <3)
It doesn't matter what hair texture or style you have, he WILL be giving you a scalp massage and oiling it. He will also be putting in whatever hair products you use for you. He's desperately touchstarved so he loves the fact that the scents he associates with you linger on his hands, even if they're not his preferred scents.
every black damian fan screamed BEGGING YOU TO BRAID MY HAIR FOR ME DAMI....S AVE ME DAMIAN SAVE ME DAMIAN, DAMIAN SAVE ME
oh god i agree i think he'd have such a nice "clean" scent to him... refreshing... maybe like match or mint like you said... and some lightly-sweet aromatics idk . lord i dont know smells <3
this was eggcellent im putting it in my recs tag
now im going to search up what everything showers are bc i know girl dinner/math but not that . if i told damian about girl dinner he'd be appalled . he'd be like "That's a level of desolate nutrition I've only experienced during assassin training or a mission in the Alps."

At the library copying new soup recipes (as you do) and I must say how much I appreciate those cookbook authors who give an alternative measured amount in addition to their more vague vegetable descriptions.
One cup of diced onions means a lot more to me than one medium onion, given the vast variety of onion sizes available. Especially when you're a food grower/preserver who might have chopped all their available onions into dice and shoved them in the freezer already.
This also goes for canned beans/vegetables since commercial cans are definitely different than my home-canned cans (or stock of dried beans). And dried herb amounts to sub for fresh when recipe appropriate because I struggle to keep potted herbs alive in the winter so most everything goes into the dehydrator as freezer space is limited.
Yeah I know that with a lot of recipes exact amounts aren't required, especially with something like soups. But it sure is nice not to have to guess how much juice is "half a lemon's worth" when what I've got is all frozen in tablespoon aliquots.
#recipes#recipe writing#measurements#rough sizes vs volume#cooking#soups#i think i might try making soup a weekly thing so i'm gathering more recipes to use what i almost always have on hand#unlike the special ingredient soups#which are lovely but i can't afford right now

Since we’re rolling into seed season, I’m super curious about where commercial greenhouses purchase their petunia seeds? I know places like Swallowtail will sell me some commercial cultivars like super cascade, trilogy, mambo, easy wave, etc. but I know there’s a whole world out there! I also know many producers have their tunias under lock and key and only allow growers to purchase starts. Is there any way to find out more about which types are even available for the average person to produce? And where an average person might acquire them 👀. I’ve googled a ton but unfortunately there’s so many seed scams out there it’s hard to sift through it all
Tbh my workplace starts very few things beyond veggies and herbs from seed, so idk!
The petunia market is VERY intense and new varieties are developing so often that stable seeds aren't really a thing for most of them. Its all vegetative cuttings and tissue culture to preserve th cultivars that are making the big bucks as far as I'm aware.
Asexual reproduction (from cuttings) of most varieties isn't allowed except by certain people, and varieties that breed true from seed and aren't sterile just won't be of as much interest to the Big Hort people trying to make money off of plant patents and licensing.
Wave petunias are available from seed, for sure, and a lot of other older bedding type petunias. Anything you'd see grown in a flat vs. a premium container probably was started from seed. A lot of people are moving away from annual flat production because it just doesn't make money compared to more premium annuals.
The other trouble with petunias you can grow from seed is that they sometimes tend to need deadheading unlike modern sterile varieties. Some people don't bother, but it can slow down how much the plants flower if they're always trying to produce seeds.

Tammy knows what’s up with vertical gardening and shows us how to maximise green space.
Vertical gardens can transform wall or maximise a small space in your garden. They needn’t be massive with complex watering systems or an eye watering cost. If you keep things simple, they're easy to make yourself at home. Tammy’s here to show you how!
Choose a sturdy frame:
Wire mesh is a great option or go with a classic wooden lattice. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s sturdy as watered pot plants get quite heavy. Another option is to create one with timber pallets. The shelves have fabulous planting pockets, but it can be hard to know if the timber has been treated. It's wise to avoid pallets for gardens that include edible foods.
Choose your pots:
Many pre-made vertical systems have tiny pots, which is fine for small plants but can limit your options or stunt their growth. The solution is to try a variety of pot shapes and sizes. A mix of plastic troughs and leftover pots will be lightweight and may make use of what you already have laying around. They’ll need to be reasonably small to keep the focus on the plants. Flat backed wire baskets lined with coconut fibre will also be lightweight and easy to hang.
Choose your plants:
The best vertical gardens are lush with creative combinations of colours, textures and forms. But too much variety can look messy and increase maintenance. To keep things simple, choose a theme: Sunny herb garden? Shady tropical? This might be influenced by where its positioned and the exposure to light, warmth, and wind.
Next, choose 3-5 core plants with different textures and habits that can handle living in small pots. A good combination is one strappy-leaved plant, one trailing plant, and one with bushy leaves. Once you have these in place you can add others to fill the gaps. See the grid below* for examples for a sunny or shady position.
Setting up:
To extend a wooden trellis, you can use garden wire to secure two frames together. Make sure it’s sturdy before setting out your design. Think of your frame as a grid and play around with pot placement before planting. Strategic placement can be the difference between a nice background greenery and an eye-catching feature wall. Try creating straight or diagonal lines of the same plants or grouping them to highlight and contrast blocks of colour or texture. Pots that are directly on top of each other may block sunlight or airflow, so stagger them for best results. Always use premium potting mix that is suited to your plants and remember that they will grow at different rates so don’t expect it to fill out straight away. It’s a good idea to trim back the faster growers to stop them hindering the slower ones. Remember to observe and tweak your creation along the way – the only way is up!
