Nothing like finding out tonight that someone I've been in many a fandom with (never the same circles, but of the 'we had mutual nodding acquaintances' level), who I've respected for years (and had overlapping tastes with, resulting in the multiple past fandoms), passed away two years ago.
The world shifted a little on its axis, for me. And so instead of what I had been planning to do, I'm reading back old fics, and once again wandering down the path of how those stories, over many years, have created literary beauty and expanded my mind.
Fandom can seem overwhelmingly huge at times, and at others, so very intimate and small.

Abigail Williams Meets Demon (Gone Wrong)
Tumblr media
Edit: This design is outdated now go check out the new design lol
Abigail Williams after being kicked out of the Proctor’s house and promptly fired, running to the woods to cry, and being confronted with an otherworldly chaotic entity that offers to help with her problem.
This is the stupidest way to introduce my Crucible rewrite but regardless 💀💀. It’s titled “Salem’s Bond” and it’s the Crucible rewritten from the perspective of Abigail Williams, delving into her childhood, time with the Proctors, and the witch trials themselves… with a supernatural twist.
(It’s also a prequel to my four book series Vanished so that’s cool)

Bi-Han, Sektor & Frost: parricide
Bi-Han: MK1 story mode (2023)
Tumblr media
Sub-Zero: He [father] did us a favor, having that accident. And I was right to let him die.
Frost: MK11 intro dialogue vs Jax Briggs (2019)
Tumblr media
Frost: I killed my mother when I was twelve.
Sektor: MK9 (2011)
Character Bio:
Tumblr media
"The son of the Grand Master, it was never in question that Sektor would join the Lin Kuei. What pleases the Grand Master is the degree to which his son relishes the life of an assassin. The secretive clan allows Sektor to express his darker nature, using any means necessary to complete his tasks. Hired by Shang Tsung, his current assignment is to attend the Mortal Kombat tournament and eliminate the Earthrealm competitors before they have a chance to compete. Though this mission will put his clan in good standing with Shao Kahn, Sektor's ultimate goal is to supplant his father as Grand Master of the Lin Kuei."
Sektor's ending
Tumblr media
"Sektor had dedicated his life to the Lin Kuei. His victories had brought honor to his father, the Grand Master. He had proven himself worthy. It was time to replace his father. In a bold attack, Sektor smashed through a company of Lin Kuei guards as he pushed toward the Grand Master’s chamber. There he found his father waiting. The Grand Master warned him that wearing the Dragon Medallion brought much power, but at a cost. Sektor ignored the warning and slew his father, whose soul burst from his body and flew into the medallion. Sektor placed the artifact around his neck. He had finally seized control of the Lin Kuei."

i think the circles are supposed to be halos? like representing the characters being beacons of "Goodness" as opposed to "Wickedness"
that's an interesting observation! i wound up asking some folks i know who have been fans of the musical for two decades, and they informed me that in the stage production, there is a gigantic clock that looms over everyone throughout the story- as a visual motif for the Time Dragon Clock so from what they say, by putting circles everywhere and framing characters within circles a lot, it seems like the movie director and director of photography found ways to make A Clock visually haunt the narrative of the film, like it does on stage
Tumblr media
#anon#outside of that idk#i didn't ask my friends what the lore was about or what the meaning was- and they didn't volunteer the information#they're letting me stumble around in the dark as a newbie wicked fan because it's fun this way#i wonder if the clock seems like it's present when important story things are happening? idk#cause we do see the circle being used to frame Glinda as good; but we also see a circle around Dillamond and the hate speech#to be clear i think its use as a halo and the sunlight is very interesting. i'll have to pay attention when the circle is illuminated#because sometimes it is and sometimes it's not; wonder if thats important or if it's more important that it's just ever-present#as if there's a some unseen audience (whether that's us metatextually or the dragon idk) who are watching this 'untold' story#with Glinda as the storyteller- speaking to the munchkinlanders from the opening number#cause sometimes we pass right through the circle or see it from both sides; like a lens#i wonder what the Time passing aspect means though- if the mechanical nature of it ties to the Wizard and his mechanical things somehow#i feel like the only time in the movie i hear the Time Dragon Clock be referred to is when Glinda tells us the time of Elphaba's Melting#(there's a scene at the start where the window and her hat is reflected in the puddle. and the two half circles and hat form an hourglass)#(in MY opinion the hat looks like falling sand. my friends didn't seem very convinced so it's probably nothing)#there's the hourglass imagery- maybe Elphaba has run out of time. or she somehow IS running out of time; if the 'sand' isn't done falling#and after that i'll have to keep my eyes peeled for when they mention clocks or time#rambles

Book Review #69 of 2024--
Tumblr media
Games Untold by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Rating: 4.09 stars averaged.
Read from November 21st to 27th.
There was just so much for me to love in this one. Firstly, the physical book itself was so good. I love the cover, the end papers are great, there's a list of stories with a timeline for where each story fits into the series. Secondly, so many stories featuring characters I just don't think we get enough of. Let's discuss ratings/summaries for each story.
That Night in Prague--4 stars. I always love Hawthorne games and seeing some more of Avery and Jameson makes my heart so happy. Plus there's a little tension there which made the sweet moments stand out so much more.
The Same Backward as Forward--3.75 stars. We got to peak in on the moments when Hannah was taking care of Harry. I, personally, don't feel super attached to these characters. Plus there was no real Hawthorne-ness to the games/riddles that Harry would present to Hannah during his recovery. It was still good though.
The Cowboy and the Goth--4.5 stars. When I originally read this story, I was 100% certain that it was going to be my favorite in this collection. Turns out it's number 3. But there's a lot of my own life that I see reflected in Libby's life so reading about her spending time with Nash and their relationship made me so emotional. Nash literally had me tearing up at one point.
Five Times Xander Tackled Someone (& One Time He Didn't)--5 stars. This was a real character study of Xander here and I was living for it. Plus this does play around with the format that a lot of fan fiction has taken over the years. I mean who hasn't read the whole 5 Times X did Y (& One Time X Didn't)? This made it to one of the top stories for me because it's so very Xander and it's also just sweet and full of fluff.
One Hawthorne Night--3.5 stars. I think the only reason this got a lower rating for me is that I've read it before so nothing here felt as new and as exciting as the other stories did. It was still a good time with Hawthornes being Hawthornes. In this one, we see the punishment Grayson has to face for ignoring a 911 from one of his brothers.
$eCR3T $@NT@--5 stars. This is Christmas themed and I am a Christmas person. If I am nothing else, I am a Christmas person. That's the thing about me. So, how could I not love a story featuring the Hawthorne family doing their version of Secret Santa? "Espionage. Risk. Defensive maneuvers. Competition. This is Secret Santa."
What Happens in the Treehouse--4 stars. We watch the boys go out on the town for Nash's bachelor party. This is technically also a reread since it was included in a Barnes and Noble edition of one of the books along with One Hawthorne Night. But I found that this one held up to reread better than OHN.
Pain at the Right Gun--3 stars. My least favorite of all the short stories. This one was attempting to be so vague but still give a glimpse into Jameson Hawthorne's experience from another story that it was actually not that fun of a reading experience. But it's still a Hawthorne and it was still a good read.
And that is probably the clearest review I can give for this collection. I read a story or two per day depending on the length--during a really stressful week at work and with school so this was exactly what I needed right now. So much fun and I'm so prepared for more from this world soon.

A brave new voice has emerged on the independent film scene. Meet Nazenet Habtezghi, a Black creative who’s carved out a niche for herself as a documentary filmmaker. Her latest project, where she serves as both director and producer, is “Birthing A Nation: The Resistance of Mary Gaffney” (MTV Documentary Films). It’s a story that takes the audience on an emotional rollercoaster as Habtezghi carefully unpacks the life of an enslaved woman who’s hellbent on preventing her enslavers from controlling her reproductive future. While the subject somewhat eerily mirrors some of the issues of agency that women are facing today, Habtezghi is able to keep the integrity of the era in which Mary Gaffney lived using testimonies from formally enslaved people. The film is only 19 minutes long, but each second grabs you in such a way that you’ll be thinking about Mary Gaffney many moments later.
Tumblr media
The Brooklyn-based journalist-turned-filmmaker is a nurturing, compassionate storyteller who takes pride in disrupting the system. Habtezghi took her time to ensure she could frame Gaffney’s story in the most impactful way.
“It was important for me to say her name," said Habtezghi. “I like to say that Mary found me. I came across her testimony, and I was initially fixated on the part where she talked about chewing cotton root. I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?  The thing that you’re being forced to pick on the plantation is what you’re using to control your fertility,’" said the first-time director.
Gaffney’s audaciousness in defying her slave breeders is what makes her so badass and she wasn't the only one. There were others who also chewed on the cotton root as a "natural" contraceptive, exercising control of their own reproductive futures. “I was lost in that part of her testimony. It was just so incredible."
Habtezghi was working at Firelight Films, producing, researching, and developing a different project about the Transatlantic slave trade, when she came across the archival testimonies from the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a government work release program that provided 8.5 million jobs to Americans during the Great Depression in 1935. Most of what she discovered were detailed interviews with 2,300 formerly enslaved men and women.
“After reading buried testimonies of enslaved people, enslaved women, and enslavers talking about how they raped women, I was in this emotional space,” said Habtezghi.
She later explained how a mentorship with historians Dr. Jennifer L. Morgan and Dr. Daina Ramey Berry, both of whom are featured in the film as experts on the enslaved, helped her gain a greater understanding of the relationship between Black women’s physical labor and their reproductive labor and how, when combined, it emphatically dictated and sustained slavery in America through the 19th century once the Transatlantic slave trade market was no longer an option.
Tumblr media
“It fueled slavery and gave rise to capitalism in the United States," said Habtezghi.“Capitalism could not have existed if it wasn’t for Black women. It’s Mary’s story but it’s also the collective [story] right? It’s important to be rooted in her resistance but then become empowered by it.”
When COVID-19 happened, the project was put on pause. As luck would have it, another opportunity presented itself through Firelight Films and MTV Documentary Films. They were looking for filmmakers to create short films that could speak to the forgotten or unknown parts of Black history. Habtezghi knew exactly what story she wanted to tell. It took almost two years to bring details of Mary Gaffney’s life to light. Now, the film has been nominated for a Black Reel Award in the "Outstanding Short Film" category.
Habtezghi’s connection to this story goes even deeper. Her emotions get the best of her as she describes her personal journey as a young girl, fleeing her home in the war-stricken African nation of Eritrea and migrating to the United States. She grew up in Dallas, Texas, and would graduate with a B.A. in Journalism from Oklahoma University. In time, she landed her dream job as an editor at ESSENCE magazine.
Habtezghi has earned her bones by contributing to documentaries that have been featured on PBS, Netflix, and HBO. She co-directed The ABCs of Book Banning with esteemed documentarian Sheila Nevins for MTV Documentary Films. Nevins, who has produced hundreds of projects for HBO, is also a 32-time Emmy winner.
In her next project, Habtzghi is set to produce and direct “American Problems, Trans Solutions,” a docuseries in partnership with transgender activist Imara Jones. She has made quite an entrance in the documentary filmmaking arena with Mary Gaffney’s story, masterfully breathing life into a buried tale and giving a voice to an otherwise unknown Black woman whose secret defiance in the face of slavery deserves to be told.

I am thinking very very hard abt the toy world guys and oh baby I love dropping in disturbing lore bits that are just sorta dripped into the actual plot and otherwise are not explained <3
#rat rambles#oc posting#I rly want to build this world in a way where the worldbuilding does exist and it does effect things but you still dont get to know abt it#and I especially rly want to hit this balance with the new choice lore Im cooking rn because its that sort of thing I think is more fucked#up the more that is left to be implied or completely untold#Im still figuring out what I want that balance to be though especially since I ultimately don't Need to tell basically anything#so its more so a matter of how much Im willing to risk putting on display for the sake of implying less relevant stuff#because its fun for me to know that the ripple of this event was far larger than any of the cast will ever know but idk if I want the#hypothetical reader to have that experience too or not and if so to what extent#because ofc I dont want to make it too obvious what this ripple looks like and what it may have impacted#and there is smth fucked up in its own right if I Did just fully keep all that to myself#and this does matter because I am toying around with the idea of committing a bit harder to this story and making it a thing one day#nothing is guaranteed but I do really Really like the story Ive been building here and I think it'd be fun to make it real someday#not anytime soon but one day maybe#maybe I could use it as my next step after spiraling upwards? we'll see.#speaking of spiraling upwards I'm planning on rescripting some stuff and continuing to work on the script soon#I am starting to have a clearer vision of what I want to do for the first chunk of the story#Im also deciding wether I keep the original prologue or not but Ill keep procrastinating on that one for a bit I think#the current prologue is intentionally kind of irrelevant to the rest of the plot but Im starting to doubt myself on if it's a good choice#Ill probably end up reworking it at least a little bit though if only to better establish the main plot by a bit#because its Technically kind of relevant the pov just isnt paying attention to the relevant parts#so maybe I can have her pay a smidge more attention for like a page or two and then call it good#anyways this does mean I will have to give the toy story a real name unfortunately :/#sighhhh. I hate naming stories soooo much.#maybe I can just pop open a random word generator and see what calls out to me

things . . . have always been pretty good . at least , powder can't remember a time when they weren't anything but . her family was okay -- they text each other from time to time . her part-time job at mooncents was alright , she's sort of friends with some of her coworkers . school was going fine , she made honors her first semester -- there wasn't really anything of note to complain about . so then , how could her luck ever run out ?? powder has ' great potential ' . apparently . those weren't her words . but at the behest of her intro to engineering professor at arcanus city university , powder signed up for slot in an upcoming inventors competition : aeventors of tomorrow . and for anyone hoping to get their name out there in the scene beyond just slaving away for soulless , generic firm . . . this was a huge opportunity . there's only one problem :
✘ 𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚
thank god for her friends , family , and professors who continue to cheer her on because every she seems to make crumbles , sparks , or explodes upon testing . its almost like . . . she's been jinxed or something .
