i had a dream that time travel was invented and too many people choose to travel back in time to save the titanic from sinking (the question of whether unsinking of the titanic deserved so much attention in the face of human history was the subject of both heavy academic and online discourse), which caused a rift in the space-time-continuum that led to the titanic showing up indiscriminately all over the world’s oceans and sea in various states of sinking.
this caused a lot of issues both in terms of fixing said space-time-continuum and in terms of nautical navigation, and after a long and heavy battle in the international maritime organization it was decided that the bureaucratic burden of dealing with this was to be upon Ireland, much to their dismay. the Irish Government then released an app for all sailors and seafarers so they could report titanic sightings during their journeys, even though they heavily dissuaded you from reporting them given the paperwork it caused.
anyway i woke up with a clear image of the app in my head and needed to recreate it for all of you:

book from the sky (tianshu) xu bing, 1989-91
I was so excited to see a copy of this in real life bc it's something I studied in art history. this is a book that was typeset and printed by hand using wooden blocks but every one of the characters was invented for the sake of the piece and does not correspond to any word in the Chinese language
#woww#if the chinese characters appear pretty legit it is because he uses the same radicals that make up real chinese characters#but yea none are correctly to be real words#i think the english equivalent is lorem ipsum#reading the wiki page#'tian shu' or 'book from the sky' or 'divine writing' used to refer to religious writing; but over time changed to mean 'gibberish'#xu bing made another project called 'book from the ground' referencing how chinese characters are like pictographs#and its full of like. emojis and wingdings lol#edit: to be clear the emojis and wingdings do tell a story#book from sky: a book no one can read. and book from the ground: a book anyone can read

DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE NEANDERTHAL CHILD WITH DOWN'S SYNDROME? Because they're all I've been thinking about when I'm sad for the past few days. Their existence makes me less sad.
#there's a museum of anthropology i went to when i visited the US#i'm often thinking about this man displayed there#the right side of his body was that of a full grown adult man#and the left side of his body had an arm and leg that were much smaller. like maybe half the length of the right side#and there appeared to be an old injury on his skull long healed#he was surrounded by his personal items. a walking cane; clothes; children's toys#i can't recall when exactly he lived but must be ages ago. nothing he owned was sophisticated or made of forged metal; all stone and wood#like the vibes i remember is 'cave man times' but that's going on a feeling and i could be super wrong#the info card next to him said that researchers believe his physical deformities were a result of a head injury that affected his growth#based on the size of his smaller limbs; he might have suffered this injury as a 4-6 year old child#but based on testing- he lived to be approximately 40 years old; and might have passed from a stroke or complications related his brain#at least the best they believe is he passed along naturally and lived the fullest life he could have. which- consider the time period!!!#40 years old is a very long life for the time. he was practically an elder#it's very likely that he physically could not perform many tasks around the village. he might have mentally been more childlike or slow#it's not likely they cared for him and fed him due to some cost-benefit survival-of-the-fittest calculation. they loved him dearly.#when he passed his body was arranged neatly and he was placed gently into the earth surrounded by all his possessions#presumably; surrounded also by the community that loved and cared for him for more than 30 years#and the info card wondered at this clear evidence that the humans back in those times cared for each other like we still do now#contradicting the cynical belief that humans are naturally cruel and cold. especially 'back then'.#but no. we have always cared for our most vulnerable.
