International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is celebrated on May 8th every year. This day is dedicated to the humanitarian work of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The day is also known as World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was founded in 1863 by Swiss businessman Henry Dunant. Dunant was inspired to create the organization after witnessing the suffering of wounded soldiers during the Battle of Solferino in Italy. He organized local volunteers to provide aid to the wounded soldiers, regardless of which side they fought for.

In 1864, Dunant's efforts led to the signing of the Geneva Convention, which established rules for the humane treatment of wounded soldiers during times of war. The convention also established the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which is responsible for overseeing compliance with these rules.

Over time, the ICRC expanded its mission beyond providing aid to wounded soldiers. Today, it works to protect and assist victims of armed conflict and other disasters around the world. The organization provides medical care, food, shelter, and other essential services to those in need.
