the parallels between regina and snow :/ both would kill/die for love and both find themselves losing it so often :/

I’m intrigued to hear your thoughts/headcanons on Regina and Leopold’s “marriage” and what exactly it was like for everyone involved eg. Snow, Cora, Henry Sr, ofc Regina and etc. I went way too deep into a thought-spiral myself about it and the more I dwell on it, the more pain I feel for Regina. Given the tiny heartbreaking pieces of insight we’re given about her life as Leopold’s wife in flashbacks, just imagine the crap she had to go through that we didn’t even get to see onscreen.
honestly, i think if ouat hadn’t been a “family show,” regina’s story would’ve been even more depressing because yeah, there is so much we just didn’t get to see but was hinted at and i—
give this poor woman a break. anyway.
one thing that always really bothered me about snow is that it seems like no one ever sat her down and told her that her father was regina’s abuser, so she brings him up when she shouldn’t (like the idea that she was going to name baby neal “leopold.” i mean. can you imagine the amount of shit that would’ve brought up for regina.)
which is why, in my mind, snow and regina actually do sit and down and have that conversation at some point
archie’s the one who suggests it when snow mentions leopold and it causes regina to go into a full blown panic attack. she tells him about this in a session and he tells her the only way she’s going to be able to stop this is by letting snow know that it makes her uncomfortable
which regina really doesn’t like. she’s never had any intention of telling snow the truth about all of that. and honeslty, i think this has always been the case, even when she was the evil queen
she’d rather snow live in a blissful world were her father was actually a good guy, then be the one to tell her that no, he was actually a really, really shitty human being
maybe because regina knows what it’s like to have a parent who lets you down
and when she has to have that conversation with snow, she’s terrified. she has herself convinced that she’s going to lose everyone (snow, emma, henry, etc.) because of it
but emma assures her that it won’t happen like that because this is snow white we’re talking about and despite being given many chances to walk out regina’s life for good, she never has
snow is upset, to say the least, when she finds out but it’s not for the reasons regina thinks. i mean, yes, she’s hurt to find out her father was a piece of shit but she’s more hurt to find out regina had to go through what she did, and to find out that maybe daniel wasn’t the whole reason as to why the evil queen wanted to kill her for so long
ultimately, she tells regina simply “you’re my family now. not him.” and that’s that. snow may be an idiot at times but she does care for those she loves fiercely and regina is one of those people
(which by the way, quick side note, david has always had a bit more of an understanding as to who snow’s father really was. he can read between the lines and he actually noticed all the times regina would flinch when snow mentioned her father’s name. he’s actually grateful when snow and regina finally talk about it, because it’s always been an elephant in the room)
regina knows cora is the reason she was forced to be in that marriage, and yeah, she’s found ways to forgive her but that relationship will always be tainted because of it. it makes things like mother’s day and cora’s birthday all that much harder for regina
she can also admit that her father didn’t help things. henry sr loved her immensely, but he was also a coward who stood by and let regina get abused by multiple different people (cora, leopold, rumple). he even admitted to this in the underworld, at least in terms of cora
but regina forgives him easily because even though he never tried to stop it, he was also the only person who held her and was there for her after the king would do what he wanted to her
at the end of the day, this is something regina tried really hard to just forget. but it does come back and hit her hard and that’s why conversations, like the one she has with snow, have to happen
there are a few days out of the year that really bring back those feelings in full swing (the anniversary of her wedding night, etc.) and her family is aware of when these days are and how to help regina handle them
usually it involves her and emma staying home from work, watching shitty movies david and zelena suggest, and eating a casserole snow made (the one thing snow makes that regina doesn’t complain about—actually she loves it)
also, regina isn’t fragile. she’s not broken. but she is trying to heal and when there aren’t villains to fight every single day, there’s more time for her to think over those things from her past
and it’s a real fucking journey

regina mills & unconditional love
no but guys regina mills did not know what it was like to be unconditionally loved until emma swan. i’m not even being dramatic here - i mean maybe this is a reach but it is mostly true whichever way you look at it and i’m going to back myself up.
even if people did love regina unconditionally before, that is not how regina would have felt and understood it.
cora mills could have loved her daughter had she opted to keep her heart, but she did not. she chose power over love, and chose to ‘protect’ herself from her feelings, which could have prevented her from being brutal enough to use regina in the way she always knew she would have to. she did this before regina was even born. (what also hurts me about this is that cora did not have her heart when she was pregnant with regina, so literal fetus regina would not have been soothed by a mothers heartbeat - only silence.)
baby regina knew mothers were supposed to love their children, and she certainly knew her mother said she did - with a stroke of the hair, to manipulate her into doing something. (’you know how much i love you darling, i just want what’s best for you.’) or to excuse her actions after a particularly harsh punishment. (’i only have to hurt you because i love you, regina - it’s a mother’s job to ensure her daughter suceeds.’) what little love regina thought she felt was always conditional. affection - physical, emotional or otherwise - was a reward for obedience, to be withheld and used as cora saw fit. and poor tiny regina only wanted to please her mother, only wanted to be good, and craved those hard-won moments of affection. (what did this teach her? that love was a reward, to be earned through obedience. that to ‘be good’ was to be worthy of love - and she was not inherently either.)
and then we have henry sr, who i believe loved his daughter immensely and in his eyes, probably unconditionally - after all, who else stuck by her side even in the depths of her darkness - but to a young regina whose definition and understanding of love came from cora and her abuse tactics... well, daddy loved her and snuck into her locked room for comfort and cuddles when he could after cora would punish her, but he never stopped the punishment. he made her feel better afterwards, but he stood aside and let every single thing happen to her. so tiny regina once again was taught she deserved it, that it was okay, it was the consequences of her actions. that she needed to be better. if she really was inherently worthy - if she really didn’t deserve it - daddy would protect her, surely. but he never did.
and then we have daniel - sweet, kind, honest daniel who knew nothing dark about love and loved her as freely as he could. loved her for who she was, not what she could do for him. and yes, he probably was the most unconditional love she’d ever known - but it was love between children and he was murdered before long. so then regina has to wonder, once again, if she is worthy of love at all. or if it truly is just weakness.
(nobody protects her from king leopold. he doesn’t love her at all, barely even tolerates her at times, but he enjoys her youth and her beauty and her body and her presence at his events, even if he prefers she stay silent at them. at court, regina is a decoration. friendless, alone.
princess snow white, yes, she loves her. she loved her from the moment she pulled her from her runaway horse, this beautiful heroic girl who taught her about love and magic and courage. but snow is so young, and knows nothing but what her parents told her, and regina is sure she would not love her if she knew everything. regina is sure snow only loves her as a replacement mother, as a living doll for her to play with whenever she wants, to distract her from harsh realities and history lessons, to teach her about horses, to do her hair. if regina were to be herself, to leave, she thinks this poor child would soon hate her.)
rumplestiltskin, well, he has affection for her for sure after some time - and maybe before too, through his visions, through his love for her mother, his paternal instincts and his affinity for broken things - but she is only ever really a tool for him, a means to an end. she is his revenge and his redemption. his curse caster. and if she couldn’t do that, well, he would have to drop her and move on. and regina knows this. deep down, regina has always known this.
maleficent, well - that was something like love once, maybe - lust and comfort escapism and alcohol all wrapped up in one, but they never let themselves be in love, not really, not as much as both of them perhaps could have been. external circumstances were too much.
and then henry - another spanner in the works because of course children love their parents unconditionally - but then one day he doesn’t. one day her little prince, who showed her what pure, real love really was, comes home from school with a book and tells her she’s not his real mom, and then one day he tells her she’s evil and just like everybody else, she herself is not worthy of his love. (of course, he is just a child and doesn’t understand his big conflicting emotions but for regina, this is just another step in a long, solid pattern. and her heart is broken.) as she slowly grows and goes down the long path of redemption, she wins his love back - realises she never really lost it - but of course, that pattern of thinking in her head is confirmed even more if anything. she is good now, she is trying to be a hero, and so her son loves her. if she stops, maybe he won’t again. there are conditions, like there always has been)
even robin, her supposed soulmate, she knows would not love her if she were not the hero, and even then, he has to prioritize his first family over her. snow starts to love her again - she never really stopped, only now she loves her deeply and with understanding and complexity, loves her fully, as a friend, an equal, a human being - and so do the others, but regina deep down knows they love her because she is being ‘good’ or trying hard to be.
because love for her is conditional, always conditional.
and then there is emma swan.
who throws her own soul into the darkness without a second thought, just to save regina’s life.
who protects her, defends her, speaks out for her when nobody else does. when she’s ‘bad’. who believes in her and treats her like an equal even when regina is sure she’s not. regina does not have to earn emma’s friendship and protection - emma guards her and looks out for her beyond all reason. regina could be throwing a fireball or threatening a friend and emma will only pull her away with a whispered word or conjure her own magic to help. emma tries to send her home and protect her from the underworld, even before regina has done anything to help her. emma wakes herself up from a curse and regains all her memories in a split second just to save regina, even when she’s not herself and she thinks regina is just the evil queen.
emma swan is the first person who genuinely looks out for regina with no ulterior motive or exchange of power, the first person who regina cannot rationalise a method of keeping on her side - because emma is just on her side, regardless of what she does, how badly she messes up, how emotional and messy she feels.
regina is shocked by it, she doesn’t understand it. nobody has treated her like emma does. nobody has ever put her first like that. nobody has ever expected nothing from her in return.
but gradually - once they get through all the denial and questioning and yearning and get together - emma begins to show regina just how worthy of love she is, despite everything she’s ever been taught. it shakes regina’s whole view of the world and herself, and some days she finds it hard to believe, but gradually, eventually, she does. because after all, she loves emma unconditionally, too, doesn’t she?
(she loves most people in her life unconditionally. she always has. so why shouldn’t she receive that in return?)

“that’s your problem regina, you’re always looking for someone else to blame”
cw abuse
regina blames snow for daniel’s death (and at least partially for everything that happened after). snow did betray regina’s trust but really, cora and leopold are infinitely more culpable and ill intended. regina goes through something similar, blaming emma when she brings marian back from the past, and again with zelena when hades kills robin. regina has a consistent problem of not knowing who to blame because of fucking course she does— she’s been abused multiple ways by multiple people her whole life and all of her abusers have told her it’s her fault! her mother says “i wouldn’t have to use magic on you if you were an obedient daughter” the king says “i wouldn’t have to lock you in your room if you didn’t write about your feelings for other men in your diary” (for one thing) rumplestiltskin says “you wouldn’t have a problem crushing hearts if you were a good student— oh you just crushed a heart? you monster!” so she’s unable to blame the perpetrator bc to her they’re invulnerable, (remember regina didn’t grow up in a world where the heroes defeat the villains, she lived in a world where villains crush heroes under their heel, at least until she became the villain herself, and how deliciously ironic is that?) she’s desperately trying to find someone to blame, someone who screwed up, other than herself, so she looks next to her and sees someone she trusted not to hurt her, who betrayed her, no matter how little they intended to, because really, maybe, she blames herself for trusting at all. after all, as heart breaking as it is, when regina reconciles with snow in season three, the person she blames for daniel’s death is herself.
she tells robin “my first love, daniel, was killed because of me. because he loved me.” which is a terrible thing for regina to believe about herself, moreso because of all people who died because “[regina] loved them” (daniel, henry sr, cora, robin) regina had the LEAST responsibility for daniel’s death. of these, i (and most viewers, i would hope) would argue she only bears responsibility for henry sr’s death. but this quote from “snow drifts” leaves us to wonder what regina believes/feels about the rest. textually, regina blames snow for “tricking [her] into killing [her] own mother” (regina’s words) which further complicates things because regina knows it was snow’s (and rumple’s— we won’t let him off the hook) manipulations that killed cora, but it’s crueler than that because for the trick to work she needed to trust snow, at least for a moment, and then snow gets metaphorical blood on regina’s hands when she lets regina put cora’s poisoned heart back in her chest. robin’s death at hades hand is even more complicated because regina seems to accept it as robin’s choice, to take the blow meant for regina “love is sacrifice” and how awful is it that after all this growth regina, who taught snow that “true love is magic… it creates happiness” associates love with pain and loss. then zelena saves regina and kills hades and it’s very touching. but then in season six regina blames zelena for robin’s death because zelena’s trust in hades allowed him to kill robin, which is a few steps removed from real culpability, but one step further, regina trusted zelena’s trust in hades (it’s getting convoluted, i know, but that’s how they frame it in “sisters”), and that broken trust is what splinters and hurts again. and honestly, it would take another paragraph about the split queen arc and then maybe another looping back to the author arc to reallllly explore this to the fullest. but what a cruel and terrible thing, for a character who’s been loved so badly, who’s been loved in ways that hurt her, for so much of her life, for a character with the most resilient heart, who loves unconditionally and unselfishly she would die for those she loves, who loves deeply enough to give her son true love’s kiss without her heart, for this character to believe her love gets people killed? that’s horrible.
#it’s so frustrating that they made this one of her main flaws— something that damages her relationships— something that turns a lot of the#audience against her— and then neglected to examine why this is an issue regina would have or let her work through it#but perhaps it’s best left to subtext and acting and interpretation because when the show does want to explore themes there’s a big#obnoxious show don’t tell problem#and i have a whoooooole other. mess of thoughts and feeling about The Robin Problem that involve— as i alluded to— split queen and the autho#and blame and love etc. but this is long and convoluted enough!!!#regina mills#text#abuse tw#abuse cw#i am not a licensed therapist this is a pretty surface level reading so if i fucked up i am sorry#i guess we’re in regina analysis hours which issss pretty much always the case but here#the title is from when emma was yelling at regina in the price which i didn’t even discuss#and i might change it bc emma is being very mean (not just for that line but for uhm. other issues. in that scene.)#regina angst warning#i feel less confident on the second half but i had some feelings to get out and i can’t get out my feelings without examining the text about#them aparently#i didn’t talk about the henry sr thing bc regina is responsible but the circumstances were really fucking terrible#and their reunion was soooooooo#i didn’t really get into emmas little back to the future romp bc that has more to do with The Robin Problem and the#equally egregious Marian Problem#the blame game

The Once & Future Queen Pt.1
Tumblr media
Enchanted Forest. Past. King Leopold's Palace. (Regina sits alone weeping, looking down at the ring Daniel gave to her.) Regina: (Softly:) "Daniel." Henry Sr: "There you are. I've been looking all over for you. How are you enjoying your new home?" Regina: "You mean my new prison." Henry Sr: (Sighs:) "Oh, Regina. (Sits beside her:) It doesn't have to be." Regina: "I lost everything, Daddy. My love, my future. (Places the ring on her finger:) My happiness is buried with Daniel." Henry Sr: "You still have a future, Regina. You're Queen, that's every girl's dream." Regina: "No, it was mother's. My dream was to love, Daddy. True Love! And now it's gone." Henry Sr: "The King is a good man. Kind. Fair. You can learn to love him and his daughter Snow White." Regina: "No, I can't. I will never love again. And no one will ever love me.”
Storybrooke. Present. (Regina is seated on a park bench lost in her thoughts. Henry sits beside her not saying anything, just simply being there for his mother.)
Tumblr media
(Seeing Alice approach from a distance, Henry gets up to meet her.) Henry: "Hey." Alice: "Hey. How's she doing?" Henry: "Inconsolable, as you can imagine." Alice: "Poor thing." Henry: "Yeah." Alice: "Look, I know this is going to sound insensitive and selfish, but do you have any idea how much longer she expects Zelena to look after Maria? I mean I get it, Zelena offered and loves looking after her, but with Maleficent gone and Robin pretty much in charge of the bar, she really needs her Mum's help. I’m there as much as I can be but, I love my job at the library and I'd hate to have to give it up." Henry: (Nods:) "I got it, don't worry, I'll talk to her. I should've stepped up sooner. Maria's my sister after all. I'll take care of it." Alice: "Thanks, Henry. (Looks over to Regina:) Give her my love, won't you?" Henry: "Yeah." (Henry heads back to his mom as Alice walks away feeling somewhat guilty.) The Dragon's Lair. (While Zelena rocks Maria in her arms, Robin works on her new drinks menu.) Robin: “There, finished. Do you want to try something from the new ‘Wanderlust Menu’? It's inspired by all the best drinks I had on my travels.” Robin Hood: (Leans over to look:) “Impressive list.” Zelena: (Also looking:) “Oh, is that an Indian drink I see?” Robin: “It is, and it's made with real rose petals. It'll blow your mind. Such a beautiful country. They have these sprightly trees called Arunchal Hopea. They went extinct nearly 20 years ago. People thought they'd make good fence posts.” Robin Hood: “That's terrible. But that's what people do. They destroy things. Having lived most of my adult life outdoors, I can honestly say there's no greater pest than humanity.” Robin: (Snorts:) “That’s odd coming from a legendary champion of the people.” Robin Hood: “Wrong Robin Hood, my dear. I believe you’re thinking of your father.” Robin: “Hm.” Zelena: “Speaking of fatherhood, don’t you think I look wonderful with a babe in my arms? Kinda makes you think, doesn’t it?” Robin Hood: “Uh... not really.” Zelena: “Oh come on, don’t you wonder what our child would look like?” Robin: “Um, hello?!” Zelena: “Oh, yeah. Sorry, darling.” (Robin shakes her head then goes to hang up the new menu.)
Tumblr media
Swan-Mills House. (Ella opens the front door and finds Drizella and Anastasia standing there.) Ella: “Anastasia. Drizella. What are you doing here?” Drizella: “I'll tell you what I'm not doing. (Points to a box at her feet:) Carrying that any further.” Anastasia: “We found some old stuff of Cecelia’s that we don’t remember. We though maybe some of it belonged to you.” Drizella: “If you want it, you can take it.” Ella: (Steps aside to allow them entry:) “Come on in. It's nice to see you two.” Drizella: “We would’ve been here earlier, but I just carried a box full of stuff to your doorstep.” Anastasia: “Oh, calm down. I offered to magic us here.” Drizella: “Yeah, right and give you a chance to show off to Ella? Make sure she chooses you as her favourite sister?” (They walk towards the kitchen.) Anastasia: “Hey, I found the box to begin with. Didn't even get a thank you.” Ella: “All right you two, no one’s playing favourites. So, why are you really here? To talk about Mom?” Drizella: “Hey, we’re your family. You remember, that thing you were so desperate to find? Do you even care why we’re here?” Anastasia: “We came to see how you’re holding up. You know, it's been a week now since Emma disappeared.” Ella: (Dryly:) “Really? I hadn’t realised.” Drizella: “Woah, okay, tap your brakes, Ella. We get that you’re still processing.” Anastasia: “You gained two sisters and lost a mother-in-law on the same day. It’s a lot to wrap your head around.” Drizella: “Especially since you accused your other mother-in-law of murder.” Ella: (Smiles, despite herself:) “Yeah, well, everybody has problems.” Drizella: “Exactly, so quit wallowing in self-pity and take a look through this box we brought you. (Knocks the lid of the box off:) There could be something in here to cheer you up. (Pulls out a ragged looking doll:) Like this thing, for example.” Ella: (Stares at the doll:) “It...It’s Beatrice. (Reaching out for it:) I never thought I'd see her again. I can’t believe she kept this.” Drizella: “I figured she was second hand. I just had no idea she belonged to you.” Ella: (Pulls Drizella into a hug:) “Thank you, so so much.” Anastasia: “Our childhood seems like so long ago. Almost like another world.” Ella: “Mm. Exactly like another world in my case.” Drizella: “So, what does a girl have to do to get a drink around here?” Ella: (Wipes her eyes:) “Sorry, what would you like?” Drizella: “Well if we’re going to talk about the past, we’d better make it something strong, right?” Anastasia: “Drizzy, it’s eleven in the morning.” Drizella: “Right, which means it has to be five o’clock somewhere.” Enchanted Forest. Past. (Tiger Lily and Mulan discuss their options while Emma walks ahead of them.) Tiger Lily: "We could contact the Fairies, there's a good chance Blue and the others might have some ideas." Mulan: "I thought the time-travel spell had never been done before Zelena? Surely if the Fairies knew anything about it they'd spend most of their days going back in time to fix things." Tiger Lily: "That's true, but they could still help us." Emma: (Stops walking:) "We're not asking the Fairies for help. (Turns to face them:) Not only did they ruin Rumplestiltskin's life the moment he was born, but they stood by and did nothing while Regina's life crumbled around her." Tiger Lily: "But you-" Emma: "No! You above all know how the Fairies work. It's because of your actions that we ended up being stuck here in the past! If you hadn't taken Morgause away to be raised by the High Priestesses-" Tiger Lily: "Then Uther would've killed her." Emma: "And so this is better?!" Mulan: "Emma..." Emma: "We're trapped here in the past not knowing where or when we even are! And I've already been through this crap before!" Tiger Lily: (Calmly:) "I know. Which is why I'm not worried." Emma: "Of course you're not! You don't have a family waiting for you back home! You don't have a wife you love more than the air you breathe or a daughter you promised never to spend a day of her life away from!"
Tumblr media
Mulan: "Hey! (Steps between Tiger Lily and Emma:) Back off, Emma. You're not the only one with someone they love back home, all right? Screaming at each other isn't going to achieve anything other than attract unwanted attention. So why don't we all take a moment to calm down, then think of a way to get us home." Tiger Lily: (Sees a carriage approaching:) "Quickly, hide yourselves." (The three women hurry from the roadside to duck behind some trees. As the carriage passes, a familiar face stares out from the window.) Mulan: "Who was that?" Tiger Lily: "King Leopold." Mulan: “Leopold?” Emma: (Amazed:) "My Grandfather." Tiger Lily: "Well, at least that gives us some idea of 'when' we are." Mulan: (Stares back to see the spires of the palace behind them:) "The Dark Palace. Do you think Regina's in there?" (Emma stares hopefully back at the palace, momentarily excited by the thought of seeing some version of her wife.) Emma: (Shakes her head, determined:) "Well if she is we're not going anywhere near her. I won't jeopardise our chances of returning home to our timeline by seeing Regina here in the past." Tiger Lily: (Smiles supportively:) "Good thinking. Since you've been in this situation before, we'll follow your lead." Mulan: "Agreed. So where should we go?" Emma: (Takes a moment to think:) "We head into town. We need to put as much distance between us and the palace as possible. Then we can find a place to eat and come up with a plan. I'm starving and can't think on an empty stomach." (With that, they continue down the long dirt road, Leopold's carriage fading into the distance ahead of them.) Plains of Denaria. Present. (A cloaked figure struggles to pull a horse cart along a dusty road. Four nights approach on horseback.) Sir Leon: “Halt! (The cloaked woman stops:) Stay where you are. (The woman sets down the cart handles as the knights dismount, Sir Elyan among them:) Where are you headed?” Woman: “The Seas of Meredor.”
Tumblr media
Sir Leon: “What’s in the cart? (The woman says nothing. Sir Leon motions for the other knights to search it and the woman finally turns around:) Lady Morgana.” (Morgana uses her magic to throw each of the knights to the ground. She looks around, pulls off her hood and pulls down a blanket in the cart.) Morgana: “Are you alright?” Morgause: “Yes, thank you, Sister. But we must hurry. Night is nearly upon us. (Morgause turns her face towards Morgana, revealing a hideous deformity to the right side of her face:) And we still have far to go.”
Tumblr media
Camelot. Council Chambers. (Sir Leon and Sir Elyan ride into the square and report to Guinevere and the Council.) Sir Leon: “The reports are true, Your Majesty. We caught up with Morgana on the Plains of Denaria.” Guinevere: “Was she alone?” Sir Elyan: (Shakes head:) “There was someone else.” Guinevere: “Morgause.” Sir Elyan: “We couldn’t be sure.” (A man speaks from the shadows.) Agravaine: “Where was Morgana heading?” Sir Leon: “To the Seas of Meredor.” Lancelot: “Isle of the Blessed.” (Agravaine steps into the light.) Agravaine: “I’ll send out patrols at first light.” Guinevere: “Thank you, Agravaine.” Sir Leon: (To Agravaine:) “Sire, you should know her powers have grown. Sir Bertrand and Sir Montague are both dead.” Guinevere: “Keep me informed of any developments.” (The councilmen all bow and exit. Agravaine and Lancelot remain.) Agravaine: “We knew she couldn’t stay hidden forever. Mustn’t live in fear, Guinevere. Camelot is strong. If Morgana were to act, we’d be ready for her.” Guinevere: “You’re right, of course. I’m grateful for your counsel as always, Agravaine.” Agravaine: “I made a promise to Morgana’s mother that I’d always be there for her, but this path she’s on now... The only way to save her is to purge Morgana of this darkness that has overtaken her soul.” (Guinevere nods and exits alongside Lancelot.) Seas of Meredor. (Morgana helps Morgause limp out of the cart in the foggy wood.) Morgause: “The Isle of the Blessed. (Morgana helps Morgause to the dock. A ferryman waits for them by a longboat. He holds out his hand. Morgause places a coin in it:) You know where we wish to go.” (The sisters huddle in the boat, the ferryman at the helm, as it glides across the sea.)

The Enchanted Forest. Past. (Tinker Bell and Regina walk down an alleyway. They stop outside of a tavern.) Tinker Bell: “Inside here, lies the beginning of your happiness. All the pain in your past will be just that. The past.” (Tinker Bell walks to a window.) Regina: “I just need a moment.” Tinker Bell: “You’re nervous. I get it. But look! (With his back turned to them a man is sitting inside:) That must be him. (Regina steps in to take a look at him herself. The man raises his right arm so that a waitress can refill his cup. A lion tattoo can be seen on his right arm:) The guy with the lion tattoo.” Regina: (Doubtfully:) “That’s him?” Tinker Bell: “The Pixie dust lead us to this tavern and it never lies. Come on, who else could it be? This is your chance at love and happiness. A fresh start. No baggage. You can let go of all the anger that weighs you down. Now, get him.” Regina: (Takes a deep breath:) “Okay. Okay, I can do this. I can be happy.” Tinker Bell: “I know you can. Go.” (Tinker Bell leaves. Walking back down the alleyway, she stops at the sound of her name.) Tiger Lily: “Hey, Tink.” (Tiger Lily steps into the light.) Tinker Bell: “Tiger Lily? What are you doing here?” Tiger Lily: (Smiling:) “It’s a long story. Come, we mustn’t be seen here.” (Tiger Lily leads Tinker Bell down a side street and out of sight.) Meanwhile... (Regina hesitates a moment longer outside the tavern, then opens the door. The man with the lion tattoo rejoices with a group of other men, sharing a drink with them. Regina watches the scene for a moment, then with overwhelming fear, she closes the door and flees. Regina rushes around a corner and bumps into someone, knocking them over.) Regina: “Oh! I’m so sorry, are you all right?” Emma: (Staring up at her, eyes wide, panicked:) “I... (Gulps:) I’m fine.”

this is my incredibly loose timeline of regina’s fairy tale history, because this show is so fucking confusing. it’s not so much a “timeline” as like, this is the order i think events happened in, and i don’t know how much time elapsed between them. i’m going to post some meta and like, explanations on parts of this in a bit, to keep this post from being astronomically long.
regina is born in the kingdom of her grandfather, king xavier, to cora and prince enrique (henry sr.)
cora tries to kill a few of enrique’s older brothers to move him up in line for the throne. she’s not successful and the entire conspiracy is hushed up and they’re shuttled out of the kingdom, child regina in tow, into a quiet exile in leopold’s kingdom
regina grows up in leopold’s kingdom. cora frequently uses magic to punish and abuse her daughter.
the flashback events of “stable boy,” 1x18, take place. regina, age 18, rescues snow white from a runaway horse. when snow’s father, king leopold, proposes, she attempts to run away with her secret boyfriend, daniel. cora murders daniel and forces regina to marry the king.
the flashback events of “we are both,” 2x02, take place. on the day of her wedding, regina banishes cora through the looking glass, using magic for the first time. she believes cora is trapped permanently on the other side, in wonderland, although this is not true.
she makes use of magic for a second time by restoring and preserving daniel’s dead body as a private monument to his memory.
she begins formal magic lessons with rumpelstiltskin.
the flashback events of “the doctor,” 2x05, take place. jefferson, dr. frankenstein, and rumpelstiltskin conspire to deceive regina, convincing her there is no way to bring daniel back from the dead and breaking her heart a final time. after this, she kills a person for the first time to impress rumpelstiltskin with her dedication to magic and vengeance. (she and jefferson also kindle kind of a Thing™ and at some point they do sleep together, though it’s primarily a form of experimentation on regina’s part.)
the flashback events of “enter the dragon,” 4x14, take place. regina travels to maleficent’s castle and befriends her, bucking her up and urging her to return to magic and vengeance, with the result that the burnt-out maleficent regains her strength and vitality and resumes her quest for revenge. (they have a bit of a low-key affair also, off and on throughout the years, but think of each other as friends versus any kind of romantic partner.)
i transpose a version of the flashback events of “mother,” 4x21, to here, sometime during regina’s marriage to leopold. cora travels back from wonderland and attempts to coax regina into having a child, perhaps under the guise of helping her secure access to the throne when leopold and snow are out of the way. in retaliation and out of genuine fear that leopold might make her pregnant, regina takes a potion that makes it impossible for her to bear children.
at some point, perhaps after the death of his wife, jefferson confesses about his conspiracy with rumpelstiltskin to regina, permanently poisoning their relationship and turning her against her mentor.
the flashback events of “fruit of the poisonous tree,” 1x11, take place. it has been roughly 10 years since regina’s marriage to leopold when the genie washes up on their shore and, through a series of manipulations, is led to believe that regina is in love with him. thinking that the alternative is her suicide, he murders king leopold on her behalf, and then, when he discovers the subterfuge, uses his final wish to wish to always be near her and look upon her face--trapping himself inside her vanity and becoming her magic mirror.
at some point, enrique is kidnapped by cora and trapped in wonderland with her. i don’t like the show’s version of events, in which regina is the one who magically traps him and cora just kind of swipes him on her way back to wonderland; i think regina wouldn’t want to use magic directly on her father because it would be too immediately and viscerally like her mother. maybe it happens shortly after leopold’s death in retaliation for regina once again refusing to ally with her mother.
the flashback events of “the heart is a lonely hunter,” 1x07, take place. regina enlists the huntsman to help her murder snow white, and when he fails, she takes and enchants his heart in order to make him her puppet.
the flashback events of “skin deep,” 1x12, take place. regina meets belle on the road and manipulates her into attempting to break the curse of the dark one. rumpelstiltskin throws her out, and regina pursues her at length until she’s able to capture and imprison her (touched on in “the outsider,” 2x11). afterward, she returns to rumpelstiltskin’s manse to taunt him about belle being dead, which is a crock of shit.
the flashback events of “true north,” 1x09, take place, allowing regina to regain possession of the poisoned apple. don’t ask me why the apple ended up poisoned or how she lost it to the blind witch in the first place, okay.
the flashback events of “an apple as red as blood,” 01x21, take place. regina takes custody of the imprisoned prince charming from king george, using him to entrap snow white and force her to eat the poisoned apple.
the flashback events of “hat trick,” 1x17, take place. regina has her revenge on jefferson, separating him from his child by trapping him in wonderland and using the occasion to rescue her father from cora, as well as get her hands on jefferson’s portal-jumping hat.
a version of the flashback events of “lost girl,” 3x02, take place. snow is awoken from the sleeping curse and she and regina confront each other; she challenges regina for rulership of what was formerly leopold’s kingdom.
a version of the flashback events of “the cricket game,” 2x10, take place. regina is successfully captured by snow and charming after their defeat of king george and accession to his throne. they are prepared to execute her, but snow spares her life at the last moment, ensuring hers and charming’s safety from regina via a deal with rumpelstiltskin... but his protection can only hold in a land with magic. regina decides she will cast the dark curse.
regina crashes snow and charming’s wedding and threatens them with the dark curse, as in the flashback events of “pilot” 1x01. she goes to maleficent and threatens her in order to acquire the text of the dark curse, as in the flashback events of “the thing you love most,” 1x02.
the flashback events of “queen of hearts,” 2x09, take place. as part of her preparations for casting the dark curse, regina sends hook to wonderland to assassinate her mother. unbeknownst to her, cora overpowers him and enlists him as an ally.
regina casts the dark curse, as in “the thing you love most,” 1x02, destroying the enchanted forest and sending its inhabitants to storybrooke, maine.

Note
If your still taking Prompts: Cora makes a deal with Rumple to convince the kingdom and Henry Sr. that Zelena is the king’s daughter. Regina and Zelena get to grow up as siblings and It’s Zelena who is to marry Leopold, allowing Daniel and Regina to run away together.
I took this probably in a different direction than you were expecting but I find Stable Queen hard to write (I ship it, I just rarely have the muse for it as a main ship), so enjoy what my brain created.

Well, Cora has certainly had her hands in the pot for a very long time. We find out that she not only killed Snow’s mother, but also orchestrated young Regina saving young Snow (which young Regina had totally called her out on in The Stable Boy and Cora had denied). And Mary Margaret has terrible birthdays. Too many people die on them. And we get confirmation that Neal has been alive for a couple hundred years, and the fact that he knows Hook and how to steer his ship, I think Neal has definitely been in Neverland for awhile. And Neal has a fiance, so thank goodness we’re not going to go down the Neal/Emma train that Gold was so into. Ew!
Summary: Mary Margaret and David rush to find Gold’s dagger before Cora and Regina find it. Hook makes his way to New York and manages to find Gold and stab him with poison. In the Enchanted Forest, Snow’s birthday celebration is marred by her mother’s sudden illness and Snow goes to great lengths to try and save her.
Opening: Library and Clock Tower
New Characters:
The Queen: She’s never given a name in this episode, maybe we’ll find out in the future. She’s a benevolent queen. She doesn’t believe they are any better than anyone else in the kingdom just because they’re royalty. Something she has to teach young Snow, when she becomes a little brat. It’s nice to see where Snow gets her heart from. She has a mother that not only teaches her what is right and wrong behavior, but also doesn’t let Snow get away with acting like most royalty would. The queen tells Snow that when they crown her with the tiara on her birthday, it will represent that she always holds goodness in her heart. They all look in the mirror and the the queen has some sort of attack, but tries to convince Snow that she is fine. She continues to tell Snow she’ll be fine, but then she starts coughing up blood, and Snow knows she won’t be fine. After Snow goes to see the Blue Fairy, she tells her mother she couldn’t save her because she wouldn’t take another life. The queen is visibly relieved to hear that Snow didn’t do something dark. She tells Snow that it wasn’t fear about killing someone else, it was strength. She’s very proud of her. Snow begs her to not to leave, but the queen says she’ll always be with her if there is goodness in her heart. And then she dies. That escalated very quickly, whatever she was poisoned with worked really fast, Leopold couldn’t even get home to see her before she died.
Character Observations:
Snow/Mary Margaret: Basically, we get to see that Snow was a brat at one point, and her mother taught her about goodness and treating people with respect, whether they were royals or servants. Snow is tested when her mother is dying by Cora pretending to be the Blue Fairy. She gives her a candle that would save her mother, but it would require killing someone else in the process. Had Snow not been taught goodness from her mother, she may have just killed a random peasant, but instead, she comes to terms with the fact that her mother’s life is no more important than anyone else's. Snow thinks she couldn’t do it out of fear, but her mother tells her it took strength. And then her mother dies and Snow mourns. The funeral is being held on the day that was supposed to be Snow’s birthday celebration (that sucks, my grandfather was buried on my mom’s birthday (her father) as it was the only day we could get the rabbi, so I get Snow’s feelings on this). Johanna gives her a pep talk about how the kingdom will get their strength from her, and Snow questions where she’ll find her strength now that her mother has died. Johanna lets her know she’ll still get it from her mother. Snow puts on a brave face for the funeral and leads her kingdom for the first time.
Mary Margaret is not having a good day. It’s her birthday and she does not like to celebrate her birthday. David tries to play it off like he had no idea it was her birthday but she’s not buying it. She finds a present that someone left for her. It’s her tiara and it’s from her old servant Johanna. Mary Margaret goes off to find her. She finds her gardening behind her house and they reunite. They bond over their shared grief of missing Mary Margaret’s mother. It’s almost like Snow is at least getting her surrogate mother back. They hear something in the woods, and wouldn’t you know, Cora and Regina just happen to be digging, looking for the dagger and talking about it, right behind Johanna’s house. Mary Margaret overhears them and specifically that Cora will make the Dark One kill anyone Regina likes. Mary Margaret goes to tell David (who she finds knocked because of Hook), and tells him what she overheard. Mary Margaret thinks she can talk to Regina and put some doubt about Cora in her mind. Regina meets Mary Margaret at Granny’s and she thinks Mary Margaret asked her to come to tell her about Henry. Mary Margaret comes straight out and tells her she knows all about Cora and the dagger. Regina tries to say what she does is her business, but Mary Margaret basically tells her that a war is about to happen and she needs to choose the side of good. Regina says she’s always been good; Mary Margaret added the evil part. Mary Margaret tells her what she’s doing isn’t good and questions why she’d go back to being like this after working to change. Regina says it got her nowhere and accused of murder. Regina tells her to stay out of her way. Mary Margaret reminds her that Cora doesn’t care about Henry, just about power, and she doesn’t care about Regina. Regina asks what Mary Margaret would know about mothers. Ugh! Poor Mary Margaret. Her mother died when she was young and then she never got to be a mother to Emma. Mary Margaret, David, and Mother Superior try to use fairy magic to break into Gold’s store, presumably to see if they can find the dagger, but he’s protected it and Mother Superior can’t get in with her magic. Mary Margaret makes reference to using dark magic like before, but Mother Superior has no idea what she’s talking about. Luckily, Emma calls David with the location of the dagger right at that moment. Mary Margaret and David find it attached to one of the hands on the clock tower and they are happy that they can now control the Dark One, but Cora and Regina show up to fight for the dagger. Mary Margaret practically rubs it in Regina’s face that good has won like usual, which, of course, means evil is about to triumph. Because Cora poufs Johanna in and Regina takes her heart. Johanna begs Mary Margaret not to give them what they want, but Mary Margaret can’t bear to have another mother figure die when she can help her. But then Cora says something that makes Mary Margaret realize that Cora was pretending to be the Blue Fairy when she was a girl. Mary Margaret wonders if her mother was actually sick, and Cora says she actually was, but Mary Margaret realizes Cora is the cause for everything. Cora then mocks Mary Margaret about not using the candle, and Mary Margaret wants to know why Cora did all this to her. Simply put, Cora wanted to make Regina queen. It’s nothing against Mary Margaret personally. The look Mary Margaret gives Regina at this point is really interesting. Like, Mary Margaret knows how awful Cora is by reputation, but she’s never realized the extent Cora went to put her daughter on the throne. She actually looks like she feels sorry for Regina at this moment. Cora puts more salt in the wound by saying if she doesn’t give up the dagger she’ll lose another connection to her mother. David tries to convince her that they’ll still win even if Cora has the dagger. Johanna tells Mary Margaret to let her go, but watching Johanna’s reaction when Regina squeezes her heart is too much to bear. Cora is still using her mother against her and it’s getting to be too much for Mary Margaret. She throws the dagger down for Cora and is hysterically crying at this point. Regina puts Johanna’s heart back and as they go to hug Cora throws her out the clock tower. Regina makes a comment about what good gets you before she and Cora pouf away. If I was Mary Margaret I’d probably be catatonic by this point. Too many bad things have befallen her. She is hysterically crying with David trying to figure out how to care for his grief-stricken wife. Mary Margaret and David bury Johanna and Mary Margaret is blaming herself and taking stock of the situation. Following goodness has cost too many lives. She runs through all the times she did the ‘right’ thing and what it cost them in the end. David reminds her that they still have time to get the dagger before Gold gets back to town and carry out justice, but Mary Margaret doesn’t want justice. Mary Margaret says they’re always trying to get others to change, but maybe she needs to change instead. She’s going to kill Cora!
Past Cora/Cora: And speaking of Cora, we all thought she was a real piece of work in previous episodes but she’s really pulling no punches in this one. Like What The Fuck! She purposely poisoned Snow’s mother, posed as the Blue Fairy to get Snow to doubt herself, and caused Snow’s horse to spook, all in hopes of making Regina queen. I’m surprised she didn’t kill off Henry, Sr, to try and marry the king herself. She’s closer to his age than Regina was. Either way, Cora seems to have a personal vendetta against Snow’s mother. This does not seem like a random royal that Cora decided to target to make Regina the eventual queen. Especially with her comment about Snow finding out what it's like to be the miller’s daughter and then saying she’s going to turn Snow’s heart black as coal and ruin the queen’s legacy. That is some pure rage right there.
Cora will do anything to get the Dark One dagger. She may have been playing the doting mother to Regina in the past few episodes, but she’s showing her true colors in this one. She and Regina discover that the location of the dagger is not where the map says it is. Cora says she can find it, it’ll just take a little longer. Cora and Regina manage to find it right when Mary Margaret and David find it in the clock tower. Cora conjures up Johanna as incentive for Mary Margaret to give her the dagger. Cora lets Mary Margaret know that it’s not good or evil that wins, but who has the power. David attempts to shoot Cora, but she magics his gun away (never bring a gun to a witch fight). Cora tells Mary Margaret to surrender the dagger because she’ll follow her mother’s advice at all cost since all she ever wanted was for her to be good. Mary Margaret realizes that’s what she said to the Blue Fairy and that the Blue Fairy was actually Cora. Cora does not deny it. In fact, she revels in this secret finally coming to light. All she wanted was for her daughter to be queen, and she’d do anything to make sure that happened. Cora uses manipulation to eventually get Mary Margaret to give up the dagger (using her mother and Johanna’s connection to her), and then Cora kills Johanna anyway, because she simply doesn’t care about anyone but herself. She and Regina pouf away. At Regina’s office, Regina is upset that Cora never told her what she did to make her queen. I mean, to be fair, young Regina would’ve been horrified to find out what her mother did, and since Regina banished her to Wonderland before the wedding, there was never really a chance for her to find out. Cora just brushes it off. She knows now. Regina also realizes that Cora set up Snow so that Regina would rescue her. Cora wonders what this means to Regina, now that she knows. Regina says it means Cora won, so what does she need the dagger for? Cora says she’s still all about helping Regina get Henry, and that by the time Gold returns, Mary Margaret, David, Emma will be a distant memory (what does that mean?). Cora strokes the dagger lovingly, which does not go unnoticed by Regina.
Regina: She is blindly following her mother which is really bad. I know part of it is that she’s finally feeling like her mother is taking an interest in her and not just using her for her own agenda, but by the end she’s starting to wonder if she’s wrong about that. We start with Regina digging where Hook told them the dagger would be. Regina doesn’t seem to be able to find it and Cora immediately wonders if Regina read the map right. They determine that Hook gave them the wrong location. Regina is frustrated but Cora says she can figure it out given time. Regina goes to meet Mary Margaret and assumes it’s about Henry. It’s not. Mary Margaret comes right out and tells her she knows she’s working with Cora and that they’re looking for the dagger. Regina immediately gets defensive and tells Mary Margaret what she does is her business. Mary Margaret tells her she’s willing to give her another chance to fight for the side of good. Regina is not having this conversation again. She thinks maybe she is good and it’s because of Mary Margaret that she’s known as evil, since she apparently added that to her name. Mary Margaret says the things Regina does are not good. Regina’s pissed because she tried to change, but all it got her was a bunch of people who were certain she couldn’t. She tells Mary Margaret to stay out of her way. Mary Margaret tries once more by telling Regina that listening to Cora is a mistake. Cora doesn’t care about Henry, just power and Regina says that power is how you get things. Mary Margaret says that Cora doesn’t care about Regina and Regina asks her what she knows about mothers. Way harsh, Regina. Cora and Regina show up at the clock tower at the same time Mary Margaret and David find the dagger. Regina follows her mother’s orders, taking Johanna’s heart so Mary Margaret will give up the dagger. When she finds out that Cora poisoned Mary Margaret’s mother and did it all to make her queen, the expression on her face is heartbreaking. You can see that she is struggling to come to terms with what her mother did while still maintaining the facade of being united with her mother. But she is shocked by this new information. The lengths her mother went through to make her queen. She later confronts her about this in her office. Notice how Cora takes the position of power by sitting at the desk. Regina figures out that Cora was also responsible for Snow’s horse spooking, setting her whole future trajectory (remember, she had asked her if she had anything to do with it in The Stable Boy and Cora had denied it). Regina says she won by making her queen, since that was what Cora always wanted for her. So what will having the dagger accomplish, especially since David and Mary Margaret now know they have it and they can’t make Gold kill everyone without blame? Cora basically says to trust her as she strokes the dagger, and Regina’s face definitely conveys that maybe Mary Margaret was right and Cora doesn’t care for her or Henry.
Emma/Neal/Gold: She and Gold are keeping their distance from Henry and Neal, as they are both mad at each of them. Emma is beating herself up over lying to Henry about Neal. Gold is confident that Henry will forgive her. Gold wants Emma to convince Neal to come back to Storybrooke with them. She says she already gave him his favor, but he says she’ll do it for Henry because he’ll want to get to know his father (and so he doesn’t run away to NYC like he did to Boston to find her). Emma says Henry will be happy with Neal until he lets Henry down, and she knows he will. Then he’ll understand that she lied to protect him. Gold compares her to Regina. Um, no. Regina lied to protect herself. She made Henry think he was crazy and insane. That is not what Emma is doing. Emma doesn’t feel like this is what she is doing either. Gold says she lied to protect herself. He says she wants a second chance with Neal, and no, ew, no. Emma cannot have carefully constructed these walls to want to get back with the guy who framed her and put her in jail. I don’t care what his reasoning was. Emma wants to know why Gold would think she’d want to get back together with Neal, and he says it’s the look on her face. Are we seeing the same look? I’m seeing a ‘I wouldn’t let that guy touch me again with a 10 foot pole look’, but apparently Gold is seeing, ‘How did you guess I secretly still desire my ex.’ Henry and Neal come back out with pizza and Emma asks Henry if he likes it, and he says he does, because it doesn’t lie. And poor Emma’s face just falls. Emma subtly talks to Neal about coming back to Storybrooke. Like how was Neal expecting this to work out? Henry has school and a family in Storybrooke. He can’t just stay in New York. Emma thinks from Neal’s apartment that he doesn’t have much going on, but Neal says looks can be deceiving. He tries to tell her something, but gets interrupted by Henry wanting to go on the subway. Neal and Henry go back up to the apartment to get Henry’s camera while Emma and Gold wait down by the buzzers, and Hook decides to attack right at that moment, stabbing Gold with his hook. While Hook villain monologues to Gold, Emma hits him on the head with the trash can. Neal comes down concerned and Emma tells him an old enemy found them. Neal recognizes Hook which surprises Emma. Neal gets Gold up to his apartment while Emma locks Hook up in a storage closet (should I be keeping a tally of how many times Hook has been bested since meeting Emma?). Emma says he had a map on him which means he sailed his ship into NY. She tells Neal it was cloaked when he wonders how he was able to do that. Henry is worried about Gold and goes to ask him if he’s alright (um, no, he just got a hook in the chest), but Gold goes all feral on him and blames him for the whole thing. Is Gold blaming him for coming back for his camera right then, or for bringing them to NYC in the first place? Because Hook would have waited until they got back and attacked him regardless. Neal wants to take Gold to the ER but Gold has figured out there was poison from another realm on Hook’s hook and he needs to get back to Storybrooke because there’s magic there. Neal suggests driving there, but Gold needs to get there fast, so he says they need to take the Jolly Roger. Emma doesn’t know how they’ll do that without a captain, but Neal says he can sail it. Gold realizes what that means, but Emma is still questioning how he knows how to sail a pirate ship. Emma wants to know how Neal knows Hook. Long story short, our world wasn’t his first and he’d be a couple hundred years old if he’d come straight here. Emma is trying to process the information that not only is Henry’s father from the Enchanted Forest, but is also a couple hundred years old. Emma’s phone finally charges back up and she sees texts from Mary Margaret and David. Emma tells Gold that Cora is after his dagger, and he doesn’t want to give up the location, but she emphasizes that they’re family now, so he needs to trust them. Neal and Emma go to get the car that will take them to the ship. Emma is surprised that Neal is doing so much for Gold, but Neal says there’s a difference between running from someone and watching them die.  He still doesn’t think reconciliation is possible. They get to a car and Emma hopes he isn’t going to hotwire it like back in the day, but he says it belongs to a friend. Neal wants to quickly get back to the conversation they were having before (and Emma seems a little nervous about it, like maybe he’s going to talk about getting back together), but now they’re interrupted by the person who owns the car and who is also Neal’s fiance, Tamara. Emma tries to keep a neutral face, but you can see there’s something else going on behind the mask she puts up. I’m hoping it’s relief that Neal won’t try to get back with her. I’ll even be happy with shock that Neal cleaned his life up enough that he found a woman willing to look over his conniving ways. I might be vomiting if it’s sadness that she can’t get back together with Neal.
Questions:
What seems more plausible: Hook lied about the location of the dagger before he knew Cora was going to betray him, or Gold hid it again before he left town because Belle could no longer protect it in her amnesiac state?
Why is Regina digging to find the dagger? Can’t she or Cora just use magic to get it out of the ground (if it had been there)?
Why hasn’t Emma filled in the pieces to Henry about Neal? He already knows she was in jail and that he was born there. Has Henry not figured out that Emma and Neal were separated right before she went to jail? Shouldn’t Emma tell him why she went to jail in the first place? Or is she doing the ‘noble’ thing and letting Henry make his own judgements about Neal?
Why is the queen’s bedroom at the end of a large hallway with no doors?
How is the cloaking magic on the Jolly Roger still working outside of Storybrooke?
We know that the Blue Fairy was Cora in disguise, but was Cora disguised as Johanna as well? How else would Cora know to pretend to be the Blue Fairy if she hadn’t put the idea in Snow’s head?
What would happen to the Gold’s power if he died of natural causes?
Where did Johanna come from in the scene where the queen dies? There is no one next to Snow and then Johanna is right there in the next scene.
Why did they hold the queen’s funeral before the king came home? Who made the arrangements?
Observations:
The flowers Johanna is planting and that Snow leaves on her mother’s body are snowdrops.
When Johanna calls Mary Margaret, Snow, she tells her she goes by Mary Margaret in Storybrooke.
Snow was born during the harshest winter, hence why she was named Snow.
I know that the fashions in the Enchanted Forest aren’t equivalent to the ones on Earth, but the queen is wearing a dress that is more Dark Ages, and Snow’s big fluffy skirt is more Restoration, which is a good 300-400 years apart.
The queen never makes Snow apologize to Johanna.
Snow was so named because she was born in the harshest winter.
Regina is doing all the digging in the forest, Cora is apparently just supervising.
Henry has gone back to calling Emma by her name instead of mom.
Well, Neal has finally confirmed that he went to another realm first (most likely Neverland), and that he’d be a few hundred years old if he had (you’re still a few hundred years old technically). Which also means that Rumplestiltskin and Hook are a few hundred years old as well.
Regina’s horse is named Rociante which is the name of the horse in the novel Don Quixote.
Timeline Issues:
How did it become winter already? We established in Child of the Moon that it was most likely May (based on when sunset was). Into the Deep and Queen of Hearts both took place a few days after that. The Cricket Game was maybe a week later, so we’re into June now. The Outsider was also maybe a week later with In the Name of the Brother, Tiny, and Manhattan all taking place within a day or two. At the most, we could possibly be in July. But Johanna makes reference to Snow being born in the harshest winter and it’s currently Mary Margaret’s birthday, so unless they’re celebrating Mary Margaret’s cursed birthday, the timing doesn’t make sense (and I don’t think Johanna would know Mary Margaret’s cursed birthday, especially since she didn’t know her cursed name). Also, there is absolutely no snow on the ground and there would definitely be snow in Maine during winter time. According to Google, Maine gets snow regularly between November and February.
So, that was that. Cora has always been a manipulative bitch, she’s just more crafty and cunning than we gave her credit for. Regina is beginning to have doubts because of all the secrets Cora is keeping and because she can see her mother admiring the dagger and it’s power. Mary Margaret is keeping with the tradition of having mother figures die on or around her birthday. And Emma, Neal, Henry, and Gold will soon be on their way back to Storybrooke on the Jolly Roger.

On day 56 is like to honor some pretty amazing dads. Once Upon A Time is all about family and these fathers fought for their kids everyday. Some of them have made mistakes, and some of them had to learn how to be fathers but all of them loved their children unconditionally! As you see I’ve also included step dads because they count too! Henry had so many step/surrogate fathers and each of them made him a better person!

The backstory for Bandit Regina and Evil Snow
So a long time ago I promised @findingtallahassee the backstory for these two and it’s a new year so figured I should get on it.
----------------
Same as usual it starts with a princess on a wild horse.
When she was 10 Snow started her riding lessons and was determined to be the best. One late night she snuck out to the stables on her own to practice. She quickly lost control of the horse and it ran off with her, eventually bucking her off and tossing her into a stream. The water immediately ran over her head and she thought she was going to drown. Luckily though a miller and his young daughter were passing by. He jumped in to save her and they brought her back to their house, gave her fresh clothes and let her rest their for the night. That’s how she met Henry Sr. and Regina.
The next day they took her back to the castle walls and King Leopold was so relieved to see that she was alive. Over breakfast she told her father what the Henry had done for her, so her father paid them a visit to express his gratitude. Henry had saved his daughters life and he was more than willing to offer him anything he’d like in return.
It was then that Henry revealed that he carried a deadly disease, non contagious but very rapidly running through his body. The local healers told him that it would be a miracle if he lasted to the end of the summer.
“I saved your daughter’s life yesterday and all I ask is that you return the favor.”
Henry and Regina ran the mill themselves, her mother took off when she was a baby and though she was 18 Regina expressed no interest in marriage and took no suitors. Henry feared that once he died his daughter would have no chance at a future. She would be alone, in poverty, unable to run the mill herself with no other prospects. So he asked Leopold to take in Regina as his ward after his death, give her a good life and arrange a proper marriage when she was ready.
Leopold happily agreed.
Henry died near the end of spring and Regina went to live in the castle with Snow and Leopold.
It was a good life as her father hoped. She was cared for, provided fancy clothes, nightly feasts and a warm bed. Snow relished her presence and treated Regina as the older sister she never had. And the king doted on her. Though she carried no official title other than ward, it was clear through the kingdom that Leopold thought of her as a second daughter. And when the day came he would arrange a marriage for her to a man of good fortune and social standing.
She missed her father but she was very happy there.
Though Regina withheld her hand from marriage, Snow was another story. When she was 14, her father arranged for her to be betrothed to a prince from a neighboring kingdom. Prince James. Though Snow was anxious about the arrangement, she relaxed once she met him. He was charming, handsome, her age and he treated her like she was the most sublime creature in the universe.
Regina held some reservations about him though. While James treated her and Snow with the utmost civility, she saw a current of cruelty beneath his charming facade. She noticed the way he treated his servants, how he looked down on those beneath him and the short temper he carried. However, she kept her mouth shut for Snow’s sake.
Snow and James were supposed to be married the week after her 18th birthday. Over their four year engagement they fell deeply in love. However, Snow noticed her sister’s apprehension regarding her fiance. She wanted them to be closer. So she arranged for the three of them to have a nightly picnic on firefly hill two weeks before their wedding. She also invited along Daniel Colter, the son of a visiting duke who’s kingdom traded with their own. She knew Regina cared for him.
The four of them set out for their picnic. At first it was pleasant but things grew hostile. Daniel insulted James’ father, accused him of corruption and greed, all true but not taken well by his son. A struggle ensued and James pushed Daniel down the hill where he struck his skull on a stone. Dead on impact.
Regina was devastated but Snow was frantic. Daniel might’ve just been the son of a duke but if his king were to find out what James did it would put all three of their kingdoms at odds. She begged Regina to keep the truth about Daniel’s murder a secret. No one else knew they were there, they would blame it on some faceless drifter who tried to rob them. They would protect James and protect their kingdoms. Regina loathed this idea... but she loved Snow. So she agreed not to tell.
When Daniel was found all three of them stuck to the story and Regina was prepared to a live a life of guilt over the matter. But then, a few days before Snow’s wedding a peasant man was hauled into the kingdom. Daniel’s father had been searching tirelessly for his son’s murderer and one of the villagers accused this man. When Leopold asked them if this was the man who killed Daniel, Snow and James said yes. But Regina hesitated. She saw the fear and desperation in the man’s eyes, along with the innocence. Leopold noticed her hesitation and took her aside. He recognized her loyalty but reminded her that a man’s life did hang in the balance. When he asked for her honesty, she told him the truth. That James killed Daniel.
That’s when all hell broke loose.
James was dragged to prison. He might’ve been a prince but this was not his kingdom. If he so wished, Leopold could sentence him to death.
Daniel’s king demanded justice and he was prepared to go to war to get it. While Snow begged her father for mercy, Regina tried to assure her that there was no way James’ father would let his own son be beheaded. She was wrong.
James’ kingdom was suffering financially, they couldn’t afford a war. It would decimate them. When Snow pleaded to King George to speak on James’ behalf... he refused.
“You can’t let him die. He’s your son!”
“I know... but I have a spare.”
Unwilling to put all three kingdoms at risk, Leopold made the hardest decision of his entire rule. He sentenced James to death.
James was beheaded... three days before he was due to be married.
Two weeks later, Snow was forced to marry his twin brother David.
She was never the same.
Though she begged on her knees for Snow’s forgiveness, Regina never received it. And neither did Leopold. Two years after her wedding day Snow had a private dinner with her father. The next morning he was deathly ill.
The night of his death Regina was woken up by her brother-in-law. He gave her a purse of gold, a horse and a warning.
She must leave the castle and never return.
Snow was after her head.

an unnecessary analysis of regina & rocinante
ok it’s sad about regina mills hours and i love making myself sadder so can we take a minute to think about the fact regina was told to sacrifice the heart of the thing she loves most and her instinctive first response was her horse.
Not her father, the only actual human member of her family. She has always loved her father and been very close to him - enough to name her son after him - but her first thought, above all else, when asked ‘what do you love the most’ is her horse.
Why Not Henry?
First of all, I just want to dip into why she didn’t initially think of her father, because he does seem like the obvious answer. Partially, it could be that she was denying it because she couldn’t let herself consider killing him if she didn’t have to.
But I think there is another layer to it, and that’s that her father might have been all the love she had for a long time, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t resentment there, too. Her entire childhood, Henry Sr stood witness to Cora’s abuse and did nothing. Sure, he was powerless and his wife was a heart-ripping sorceress, but a six year old Regina didn’t know that. All she would have been taught was that Mother hurts her sometimes, and Daddy can’t help. He could comfort her afterwards, sure, but that is not the same thing as protecting your child.
Then we have her marriage. Regina was very vocal about the fact she did not want it - not that she had to be, she was literally a traumatised eighteen year old engaged to an elderly stranger. There’s a flashback in 2x02 where Regina is literally crying to Henry, and we have this frankly painful exchange:
Regina: I don’t want to marry the king! I’ve told you that!”
Henry Sr: ‘Are you certain it isn’t just cold feet?’
Regina: ‘This is not cold feet, this is insanity!’
She has clearly expressed her distress to him before and been disregarded and is visibly upset. To dismiss his young daughter’s fear as ‘cold feet’ seems extremely insensitive and downright gaslight-y. I personally don’t think he means any harm by it - I think it’s just his own way of trying to shepherd her into convincing herself the situation is more normal and less scary than it is, but obviously, it totally misses the mark. Maybe it’s just too painful for him to admit just how fucked up his daughter already is, because he knows his inability to protect her enabled it. But whatever his reasoning, Regina is not validated or heard.
After this, Regina says she feels like she’s going crazy and Cora is turning her into her. Once again, Henry tries to brush this off by telling her Cora only wants her to have a good life. Regina says, once again, she doesn’t want her life and only then does Henry actually give his daughter some real information, when she asks about Rumplestiltskin. (However, it’s Regina who takes that info and decides to seek him out for help, Henry has no hand in helping.)
Regardless, Regina marries Leopold - a guy about his own age - and suffers, and Henry stands by and watches.
I also do think the reason Henry stands by Regina even when she is at her absolute worst, darkest, most awful Evil Queen state is because he knows he more than owes it to her, knows it is the least he can do when he stood back and allowed it all to happen. He might have given her cuddles and as much comfort as he could, empty or otherwise, but he never did anything else. He has been loving and comforting, but in a practical sense, useless.
And I think deep down Regina has to have some resentment for that. She loves her father, but he is sort of removed from the realities of her life. He is someone who appears on the edges, to occasionally give comfort, who also brings up a lot of repressed sadness and past memories in her. And so it’s a combination of that, and genuinely not being able to face the thought of killing him, that I think keeps her from immediately thinking of him for the curse.
Regina, Rocinante and Daniel
So, the thing Regina assumes she loves most in the world is her horse.
And if you look at her life closely, that’s a meaningful, reasonable assumption for her to make, but on more than just one level.
On the first level, Rocinante has been a comfort to her since she was very young. She was confirmed to be eighteen in The Stable Boy, and I think it’s safe to assume she had him for a while at that point. Horse riding is Regina’s favourite hobby, even before Daniel enters the scene - it’s a taste of freedom for her, an escape from her Mother and the constraints of growing up groomed for royalty, and also, it’s something she’s good at. (For a girl whose mother relentlessly criticises her in nearly every aspect of her life, that would mean a lot). Rocinante is her teammate in this tiny outlet of freedom and joy and self-confidence.
She rides Rocinante when she tries to run away before her wedding in 2x02. So she was allowed to bring him to Leopold’s castle with her when she got married - not only would he still be a source of comfort and attachment to that now extra elusive freedom, he is all she has to connect her to her childhood home. Through her horrible marriage, her lessons with Rumple, becoming the Evil Queen - her horse is her one other constant.
But, on that second, deeper level, Rocinante is also her last tie to Daniel.
Her riding lessons with him made up the bulk of their time together. The rest of their relationship, I assume, would have been in secret moments by the stables, or maybe a few precious hours in which they could ride off somewhere more hidden together - Rocinante would have been present, and part of it.
It was literally Daniel’s job to look after Rocinante. He cared for him, fed him, and would have probably spent more time with him than Regina did. So in a way, Rocinante is a living, breathing connection to Daniel.
To Conclude
So when Regina is asked to thing of the thing you love most, her brain immediately jumps to Rocinante. I think this is because her love for her horse, unlike her love for her father, is not tainted by any resentment or pain. She loves her father the most, obviously, but that love goes hand in hand with a hell of a lot of enabled abuse and traumatic memories.
Her love for her father is complex and messy, while her love for her horse is pure and sweet, a connection to the young version of herself who actually had hope for love and happiness. Her love for Rocinante is as this totally pure thing that’s been a source of escape for her all her life.
And of course, when Regina thinks of love she thinks of Daniel. Until Henry (baby) comes into her life, Daniel is the only real, unconditional, ‘perfect’ love she’s ever known. And Rocinante is her last connection to that. So that’s where her mind goes.
So yeah. Fuck Rumple when he made fun of her for that, actually.
