#hence international incident on a technicality

Roland, you can't just mention causing an (depending on definition) international incident and then NOT spill the tea. Don't leave me hanging! 🥺
Oh, you know, just the usual cases of being incredibly messy with someone terminally allergic to communication over the course of months and several visits only for me to get fed up with it and drop the cord entirely after coming back home to Vienna, because what are they going to do? Fly over here and confront me about it when they couldn't even be bothered to use their words while I was there?
As for a real incident, I recall the time my grandmother was incredibly displeased that I, a grown-ass man, was out until the early hours drinking wine and dancing the night away on the regular, and decided the best way to nip that in the bud was to eat the international call charge and call the police.
The German police.
She was very irritated when they told her to fuck off, which. What did she expect? Given I was 23 at the time and she couldn't even remember which country I live in. I don't talk to her any longer, but occasionally I imagine a German police car pulling up and screeching to a stop while I'm having a melange outside one of my usual haunts, and a very serious and very humorless police officer getting out of the car and asking me, without any hint of irony, to please consider calling my grandmother so she stops wasting police resources.
#I haven't been to Paris for a while because there's a nonzero chance of me being clobbered over the back of the head when I least expect it#no great loss tbh#anyway @deutsche bundespolizei DNI#sorry to disappoint tbh neither of these are super interesting#hence international incident on a technicality#askertorte

The awesome @sammys-magical-au is almost always my go-to for brainstorming, whether it's for characters, plots, descriptions, etc. And it seems they were kind enough to remember one of the much more obscure fanegos I've been quietly working on for a while now. Kind enough to even mention her in one of their latest fics!
And that basically kicked certain parts of my brain into gear, so...here we go! I've currently got yet another WIP cooking up, so I figured I should do some clarifying before it's ready for posting.
Much like Caliban and R.D., this uncanny lady is a partner to LeviathanPat! Or...partner-adjacent? As you'll soon see, things are rather complicated. (Go figure, I'm the writer behind aforementioned things, lol)
Although she isn't bound by standard entry rules like L.P. is, she still has her fair share of limitations. The biggest one being that she can only stay on certain planes of existence (such as Earth, for example) for short amounts of time, whereas L.P. can come and go as he pleases.
She may not be as morbid or aggressive as L.P., but it would be a grave mistake to see that as weakness. In fact, she's actually one of very few entities who have a little more power than he does. As for what exactly her power includes...well, you'll just have to wait and see~
She's one of very few entities who can call L.P. by his true name (only half of which is pronounceable by the human tongue, hence why Sol just calls him "Pat").
To say that Sylph and L.P. go way, waaaaay back would be an understatement. (Yes, that was technically a pun. No, I'm not sorry.) The feelings on either side are mutual, though certain views and methods are...not. Admittedly, Sylph sees humans in a way similar to how humans see insects. Little creatures that are sometimes interesting and mildy-entertaining...but not much else. Still, that doesn't mean she condones putting them through twisted experiments just to see what happens to them, L.P.
Now, I wouldn't be me if I didn't pile on the angst, so...While the two of them are on a very similar creature-caliber, Sylph and L.P.'s natures are just so antithetical to each other that they can only afford to be in each other's presence for a limited amount of time. Granted, they can gradually adjust to get closer and make physical contact, but even that is a slow-moving process. In fact, a huge part of their relationship revolved around the two of them searching for a way to overcome this. Unfortunately, surreal shenanigans ended up happening, which ultimately led to...The Incident. Ever since then, they haven't really had a chance to see each other...which just might change in the future. Hint-hint. (Please just be patient with me. Writing is hard, okay?)
Where L.P.'s form relates to darkness, Sylph's form relates to light. That is all...No, actually, I lied. That is NOT all. I'm talking bioluminescence plus-plus. I'm talking so bright it's legitimately kinda painful for mortal eyes to try looking at.
Then again, that light is mainly produced by her internal organs. Some of it sort of functions as her hair, and some of it does leak out into the world through her eyes. And by "eyes" I mean, "a scattering of holes in her skin that can stretch to be wider/longer or even move along as she pleases." (much like L.P., she often has way too many of them).
In fact...for the readers who have watched Jordan Peele's NOPE (and for everyone who hasn't...WHY?! IT'S SUCH AN AMAZING MOVIE! GET OUTTA HERE AND GO WATCH IT NOW!): remember the forms Jean Jacket took in the ending scenes? Well, I'm not saying that Sylph looks exactly like that, because I don't want to plagiarize...but that doesn't mean I can't take inspiration from it.
So, just imagine Sylph's outer skin behaving in sort of a similar way to Jean Jacket's. It can resemble all manner of things from jellyfish to orchid flowers to sheets of billowing cloth. Layers of it basically orbit around all the light she produces, all working together to form a vaguely human-esque shape. Not only that, but her skin also has a sort of opalescent effect to it. It can reflect hints of a variety of colors beyond the bright, pale glow of her internal system.
I usually apologize for rambling...but not today, because it took so much time and patience and experimenting to come up with a description that would be pretty and unsettling at the same time. Thanks again for all your help, Sammy 💞)
Because of that orbiting effect I mentioned, Sylph is also capable of shapeshifting much like L.P. is. The main difference is the fact that Sylph's form technically has visible structure, whereas L.P. is basically a moving, talking void no matter what shape he takes.

TW/Content warning re: domestic violence, IPV, questioning. May be v. triggering for victims/survivors of DV and IPV especially those who were not believed. (btw it is NOT about me directly; I am in a loving and generally healthy relationship and I have never personally experienced DV (as a side-side note, one of my best friends has, we helped her get out))
So. My sister is visiting my parents atm. My mom's family reunion thing is going on rn and my sis drove up to attend. (I have just barely started to feel like Me again after Rural Site Adventure, hence opting out).
Background, p 1: my family has a fam friend we'll call N. N was a past student of my mom's, I think potentially a past client but I can't fully remember the story there. She is "in between" my parents' age and mine/my sister's- I'm not sure if she's technically a young Gen X or an older Millennial, but just to give some context regarding age. My family gave her a lot of support when she was getting her life set up, including financial support in the form of interest-free loans. When my little sis was tiny (she is very much Gen Z, still in high school), N lived with us and would help out a ton around the house, with child care, even doing things like chaperoning my dates when I was in high school. There was a bit of a blow-up idk how long ago where my mom felt like N was mothering my little sis too much and boundaries were getting mixed up, and then idk when but then they made up. I've been mostly out of the house for 12 years and totally living away from them for like 9 years, so I don't remember a lot of the specifics.
Background, p 2: My parents' relationship is not great. The gist is: a lot of infidelity from dad and my mom has a lot of emotional lability for as long as I can remember. She can get pretty mean and is prone to a lot of emotional manipulation and tactics like gaslighting, goalpost-moving, triangulation with me + my older sis, guilt-tripping, diminishing others' experiences... i mean we all do these things from time to time, but she does them very often and only on the VERY rare occasion does she take responsibility (I am not saying my dad's infidelity was caused by my mom's emotional lability or that it set off the emotional lability, and I'm not excusing anybody's behaviors; I think all of this is super multi-factorial). Early on when I was in college, before I really knew much, my dad sat us all down (with my mom, after talking with her) and confessed to his infidelity + said he was considering divorcing mom to be with the woman he was cheating with. I laid into him basically saying that running away from all of us wouldn't solve whatever lead to his cheating and make him happy. He already is once divorced (idk why/what happened with his prior marriage, he hadn't yet met my mom even so that wasn't it). I told him maybe he needs to figure out what HE needs to change rather than flitting around from person to person hoping it'll work out. He decided to stay, they went to therapy, there have been no signs of further incidence (not that it's impossible, but my mom also monitors everything his does including his whereabouts via his phone 24/7). Though my mom will say she's forgiven him, she doesn't act like it- and I get trust has been broken, but it extends further to like, financial control, eg, refusing to let my dad who is actually considered elderly now retire, won't let him buy a new speaker system while my mom takes multiple long international trips. And my parents are well-off. They have the money for all of that.
Okay now the issue.
Apparently N was talking with my sister and mentioned something about Mom and domestic violence. My sis asked if I've ever heard any of their issues phrased like that- and no, never. That alone doesn't mean much - although my mom has called BOTH of us in tearful crisis-mode before and has shared more than I think is appropriate, DV is like the one thing many victims/survivors hide and never actually speak up about.
But... my mom is not shy with her body around any of us. Not a nudist, but has no issue changing while talking with us, going to the bathroom with doors open. She has never "hidden" her body in any way at home. She will hide sometimes (choosing baggier clothing, longer sleeves or lengths) when she is out in public, but I think this is partly Mormon modesty and partly body image issues, as again, she has never taken any precautions to hide her body around us kids. In all my memorable life, I have never not once seen unexplained injuries on my mom. I have seen a few small bruises on legs or arms and not known exactly where they have come- but honestly, I would see them after she was doing manual type labor like moving wood, working outside, reorganizing the pantry, moving heavy furniture... and never bruises in a weird pattern or suspicious location, never multiple bruises in different stages of healing.
I also don't sleep well and often don't have a good 24 hr sleep cycle. I don't think I'm non-24, but my sleep/wake cycles are highly variable. My little sister would have night terrors, too, and wake up from them not remembering but also needing help settling back to bed (she would come and get me or ask to sleep in my room frequently). Since I was the only other person upstairs, I stayed up to listen for her terrors so I could be there when she woke up and she wouldn't have to toddle around to find support. This means that during middle school and all throughout high school, I very rarely slept throughout the night. This also means I heard many many many fights between my parents. I have also quietly tiptoed down the stairs to see what tf was going on more times than I can count. I have never seen any signs of physical aggression from my father in these arguments. Definitely both sides are v guilty of emotional and verbal abuse, which is still abuse and is still a problem. I'm just saying I have never seen outward aggression (hitting, punching, kicking, flailing, throwing anything at all, breaking anything, etc) nor have I seen posturing or yelling. More times than not, if somebody even raised their voice, it was my mom.
When I was a child and spanking was still a think "experts" recommended (apparently), my mom would tell my dad to spank me for a punishment, and my dad couldn't do it and would pretend- he would whisper to me that he was going to put his hand palm-up and smack his own hand so it "looked" real if my mom was watching, and I was to scream and cry so it sounded real.
My dad was a vet before he was a psychiatrist. He left vet medicine in part because he was so sad every time he had to put down an animal, or see animals being mistreated. We had many animals growing up from dogs to hamsters and rats and guinea pigs to horses and bird and fish and cats. 0 signs of aggression with them- the worst thing is when he's really mad because a dog went potty in the house he'd get kinda gruff and grumble and swear.
This does not mean that my dad cannot ever be aggressive, or has not ever been aggressive. This does not mean that when I'm not around he acts the same way. I'm not saying it is impossible, or that my mom is definitely lying or "lying by omission" and hinting that the verbal abuse has extended to physical abuse too. I'm not saying things haven't been hidden from me.
I'm just saying... in my nearly 3 decades of life, I have not once seen my dad be truly aggressive. Even while drunk- he's not aggressive, he gets giggly and silly and then tired and falls asleep. My sisters (both of them) have not seen anything, any signs. Even looking back retroactively- nothing that we can say "omg maybe that was a sign we missed." In the patterns I've seen, including where my parents don't know I'm witnessing it, my dad is a huge pushover and my mom will show more signs of anger and aggression. I am getting weird vibes from all of this, and I'm legitimately concerned about why my mom is saying / insinuating these things.
Edit bc I forgot a part that I wanted to share but got too distracted.
My mom also has had some health stuff. She has MGUS which is kinda like a blood pre-cancer, specifically for her it’s like pre-multiple myeloma, but progression is slow and prognosis is overall good. But, this was discovered during workup for pernicious anemia. There’s no real known time frame for how long she had pernicious anemia. B12 deficiency (a main cause of pernicious anemia) can lead to a host of psych stuff including cognitive slowing, confusion, changes in memory, depression, and sometimes even delirium or acute psychosis. She did do B12 shots but it’s been a while since she’s done them, I think. But during that time, her memories were WEIRD. Like she would mix up things between us kids frequently, invent random and totally benign memories (she was convinced I not only ran track in 4th/ 5th grade but was really good at it, when reality was I tried to get out of running in PE because it hurt my throat/burned to breathe while running).
When she was a child, there was also possibly some DV in the home? It’s kind of unclear what exactly happened, but it’s a real possibility. My granny had some form of psychosis at one point- again not sure exactly because this was a long time ago (my mom’s a boomer) but I was told had a gyn condition that would cause her hallucinate/send her into an acute psychotic state, and once she had a hysterectomy, she was better. There was speculation it was ovarian cysts (per my mother; also, not PCOS) but never a confirmation. I have had a burst ovarian cyst that sent me to the hospital and I thought I was dying from the pain, but no psychosis. Anyway. My sis and I wonder if she had a teratoma and had autoimmune encephalopathy.
The point tho, my granny would hallucinate something like dishes in the sink and tell my mom to do them, but there wouldn’t be any dishes to do. So then granny would think she was blatantly disobedient, and punishment back then sometimes was corporal. I don’t have details from my mom, so I don’t know what happened, but we now know that any corporal punishment is detrimental and essentially DV, so regardless of how far it went, it’s problematic.
So, what I’m getting at: my mom has historically had B12 deficiency bad enough to have serious pernicious anemia, and my sis and I noticed a major cognitive shift around that time. She would mix up memories all the time. Since she’s had it before, she could develop it again. And that could lead to increased irritability, cognitive change, MEMORY issues. And she likely has very real DV memories.
Me, wanting to see best in everybody bc I’m just the perfect picture of an optimist (sarcasm), wonders: what if my mom currently has pernicious anemia and B12 deficiency again to the point her memory and cognition are all kinds of messed up, and she’s confusing her real memories from her childhood with my dad? Especially if the same feelings (eg powerlessness) came up.

ALL DONE, TIME TO GUSH
We already talked about Synth, so let’s see her kids!
Aren’t they handsome?? Collectively they’re referred to as dracoraptors, for Project Draco, which is how they came to be. Each one, while from the same gene pool technically, has variations in their DNA that add or slightly modify a feature that gives each of them a unique task or ability. While not actually their children, mommy Synth loves all of her babies very much and they are deathly loyal to them and them alone.
First is the big boy, Jericho. The most colorful of the bunch, he works as the beta, taking orders directly from Synth to pass along. He’s incredibly intelligent, to the point of being nearly human-like with how he can interpret speech and intention. Like his mother, he rarely makes noise, but when he does it’s a chilling rattle as he shakes his spines and hisses. Of them, Jericho and Juniper suffered the worst damage to their bodies, Jericho nearly dying on the table due to his lungs collapsing; by the end, he was more robot than raptor, with his burned skin replaced with grafts that show the internal components that replaced his bones and organs. While reflecting Synth’s quiet persona, don’t mistake his idle nature for passiveness or being docile. The only reason he hasn’t done anything is because mom didn’t tell him to yet. Jericho is rarely very far away from his mother.
On the other hand, big girl Juniper takes the “you’re only alive because” part of their personality and made it “I’m not close enough”. The most aggressive of the Dracos, Juniper is all attitude and teeth, having her entire lower jaw replaced. She was harmed in a way similar to Jericho, hence their matching injuries and replacements, with her nearly starving in recovery due to the issues with swallowing. Because of this, she is food defensive and views almost everything smaller than her as food if it’s not family; while loyal, she will do what she can to kill first before mom says no. Before the incident, she was much calmer, and a bit vain of her fluff as her mods allowed her to camouflage by changing the color of her skin under the clear hairs. With much of it burned off, she’s very jealous of and picks on Micah and Zaxx who still have most of their fluff; Micah gets it the worst, as her texture was identical to his thus she’s very jealous of him. The spines on her head help compensate for her damaged eye by analyzing the light and color of her environment to control the color of her skin grafts to help her stay hidden. Remember, if she sees you, you very likely can’t see her; if you can, you’ve already lost the game.
Middle child Micah was the least damaged with Zaxx, most of his injuries being internal and burn related. He used to be a the friendliest of the dracoraptors, a people pleaser with a very puppy-like personality who loved being pet and playing, however after the incident he became cautious and suspicious of newcomers. After warming up, he’s still friendly, but earning that trust is difficult when one has to survive both Jericho and Juniper to even get near the little ones. A momma’s boy, he comes running to Synth when he’s alone and is the most vocal sibling, but will serve as a distraction using the same behaviors, leading some to think he’s actually manipulating his enemies from the get go. With a modified olfactory system, Micah has the keenest nose and can track anything for nearly 5 km; when doing so, he becomes more like was, focused and dedicated to his mission. Being the designated courier, Micah has incredible navigation skills, being able to recognize landmarks (and supposedly written signs), memorize pathways and even orient himself northward with a magnetically sensitive set of head quills. Despite being picked on by Juniper, she and the others are very protective of Micah, who shows the most mental distress from the incident, having been the only one up and walking but unable to help anyone. If he begins to cry, you can assume your retreat has been cut off and you’re being surrounded.
Baby girl Raja, mommy’s princess, is a shy one that never really liked interacting with others, even before the incident, unless it was her family. They worried for her recovery, as her injuries were nearly as life threatening as her bigger siblings’, losing her entire tail and receiving heavy spinal damage. While her recovery was possible, there was concern if she would ever be able to walk again, even with the prosthetic, but she pulled through and actually became more skilled and coordinated with her new tail, being able to traverse even the narrowest gaps like a cat. Being a non-confrontational raptor (until mom says so), Raja is content to play support. Having lost one of her hands, it was replaced with a kind of Swiss army tool kit she can use to solve puzzles with, often with Juniper whom she is very close to, shadowing her big sis most days. Juniper is extremely smart like her brother, but is more keen on problem solving than taking orders, and will bring Raja along to pick locks and open containers to amuse themselves.
Lastly, the smallest boy, Zaxx, who got off easy with a jaw injury and some burns. His personality shows almost no adverse affects from the incident, but he keeps busy by running around and playing in things he probably shouldn’t be. The fastest, Zaxx also runs courier, often with Micah, and is nimble, Raja taking after him once she recovered her ability to walk as he would reteach her how to jump and balance. Scouting is his preferred task, being small, light and incredibly fast, with the brain cells to match. He is easily bored of tedium and tends to chew, which is more problematic with his front teeth being industrial stainless steel now. If needed, Zaxx will be sent to chase and contain moving targets, his front teeth being on a spring release that embeds them deep into their target, giving him a painful, immovable bite rivaled only by Juniper’s vice of a face. To help protect himself and aid his given task of take down, Zaxx’s false teeth store a small dosage of the same neurotoxin present in his feathers, which are coated in an oil that causes numbness and mild paralysis or impairment when internalized. He spends time grooming himself to spread the oils, the extras of which are collected in the teeth; his siblings are all immune to his toxin and Synth is otherwise unaffected by it, meaning they can handle him without worry. While only truly dangerous in open wounds, some people have had an allergy-like reaction to him, but whether it’s the oil or his feathers is unknown. It’s speculated this is purposeful, as an itch will cause a desire to scratch which can open the skin and allow the oil in, causing the desired effect even if one wasn’t sporting and open wound. Notes have cited that accidentally ingesting the toxin can cause organ paralysis and failure but these claims are unverified. Unfortunately for most people, Zaxx enjoys being pet and will try to get it from anyone that seems available, as he’s not picky about company at all, only turning hostile when mom gives the order.
Thanks for reading! Hope this was fun for everyone because it certainly was for me <3

Hackers are Tracking Your Every Move-Secure Your SAP Systems - ToggleNow
2019 was the year of data breaches, security invasions, and cyber-attacks. The healthcare industry saw the worst cyber-attacks and most of them related to identity theft. Information such as date of birth, social security number, and name allows hackers to invade your personal space, which leads to phishing attempts – in the most sophisticated manner.
Check this website to know more about the top data breaches of 2019.
Why You Should Care?
A lot of enterprises feel safe in their well-defined IT infrastructure, safety architecture, and policy framework. Do you think you are safe with these? If you think so, read through. Cyber threats need not be always from the outside world who are trying to invade your space or enter your office system. It is highly likely for the internal stakeholders to open doors to outsiders.
With that being said, the above statement only means that it is possible for your employees to unknowingly initiate a data theft.
How it is possible?
Most of the time, it is beyond the knowledge of the employee that he or she has initiated a cyber-attack. For instance, leaving the office door open to unknown professionals or sharing security-enabled data or passwords with unauthorized professionals might initiate an attack.
Remember that attackers are willing to get into your ERP system like SAP by exploiting vulnerable entries in technical, infrastructure, and security layers. Your workforce is the easiest entry point. When the stakeholders of your business are not properly trained, it likely for them to turn the security structure upside down without intentional urge to do so.
Hence, if you own SAP system as your ERP, it is time you stop thinking of the security architecture you have in place and start thinking of how to consistently monitor SAP’s cyber-security from every direction. It is necessary to develop a custom security and governance strategy to mitigate and address looming system risks.
Check out this interesting article shared by Reuters on how hackers invade our ERP systems like Oracle and SAP.
What are the recent cyber-attacks happened in SAP space?
In 2012, we saw the first SAP system attack. Till then, of course, everyone was oblivious of the situation and didn’t think that it is even possible to break into the SAP system. But, it happened then and it can happen now.
An anonymous group invaded Greece’s Ministry of Finance’s SAP system. The result, the theft involved the credentials of several ministry employees, identity theft, and major damage to the reputation.
Since then, the SAP attacks never ceased. There were attacks where banking information was pulled from the system and key logging was utilized to extract data related to passwords.
In 2014, a GPU-maker NVidia experienced an attack on its old SAP NetWeaver. They failed to implement an SAP-approved patch, which caused them a lot. The customer service data breach was undeniably destructive for the organization in every sense.
In 2018, the US National Cyber-security and Communications Integration Center released a report indicating “A rapidly rising interest by hacker activists, cyber-criminals and government spy agencies in raiding vulnerable ERPs.” According to the report, at least 10,000 organizations are using vulnerable SAP implementations and there are more than 4,000 separate bugs in SAP packages that hackers can use as an entry point.
All of these incidents caused huge damage. Till the time, the attack was detected, thousands of dollars worth of damage was already caused.

Why SAP Clients Are at Risk?
As mentioned, you might have a strong security strategy, Virtual private networks, Anti Virus and Anti threat detection software, and so on. Having such highly sophisticated hardware/software doesn’t save you from these threats.
Here are few reasons on why your SAP system might be at risk:
How to Minimize the Risk?
Following are few of the suggestions to minimize the risk.
Consistent updating of patches.
Regular SAP audits.
Regular proactive security measures.
Ensuring employee security training.

No, Tellexx; I Will Not Simply Follow Along: Part One of a Reading of Razzmatazz’s Story
Razzmatazz stands out for many reasons. Since the band takes the “concept album” to a new level by creating a “concept band” through lore Razzmatazz stands out, in my opinion, because of the compromised role between writers and readers. There are many ways to look and interpret the story behind the songs, if readers choose to see the songs as telling a story. I’m going to share my own interpretation. This “reading” is influenced by “The Death of the Author” by Roland Barthes, and “Interpreting the Variorum” by Stanley Fish. I find that the album critiques ideas of Marxist theory and mocks the industry that fuels modern music as seen by the nods to Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, and Walter Benjamin; but relies on the reader to create the story more than the use of satire. The album cannot work because the text “disappears” (Fish 485) without reader interaction. Weekes and Seaman cannot fully control how readers “read” their work, which I think is something they encourage through the ambiguous nature of the text. Through reoccurring symbols in the songs and videos the story unfolds in subtle ways, encouraging the listeners to not simply follow along, but to engage with the lore to understand what is happening to the narrator. I will go through, in order of each piece, enabling the “birth of the reader” (Barthes 521) to tell the story in the way I interpret it.
The story begins with “Leave Me Alone”. The characters, Dallon and Ryan enter the corporation in 2020 based on the use of masks and safety precautions taken for the real events taking place. The “volunteer pairing” (“Indoctrination” iDKHOW) takes their first step in working for the corporation Tellexx. Ryan is clear in his resistance towards the means and ideas of the company, hence why he is wearing a mask more often. To prevent rebellion, Tellexx separates Ryan from Dallon using isolation boxes and masks him to force him into compliance. They do this with Dallon too, but to a lesser extent because if Tellexx wishes to spread its influence Dallon needs to use his voice. Ryan’s rebellion is stifled easier because of his role as percussion by wearing a mask, but that does not mean he is powerless. He strongly opposes Tellexx’s ideas to the point where the company views him as a threat, so they attempt to stop him from communicating through isolation and forced muting with a mask. But it doesn’t stop him. His lack of face expressions and movement within each video show his rebellion. What at first comes off as unusual and perhaps humorous allows Ryan to hold the role of a Byronic Hero. His rebellion comes through his intelligence and outward appearance. Instead of parading around playing a role, Ryan goes against Tellexx’s wishes and simply does not do anything. Tellexx views him as a direct threat and minimizes his role strictly to percussion, but that does not stop him, which I will return to later.
Dallon is much more subtle with his pressure, but the Tellex workers suspect rebellion based on lines such as “the devil that you know is better than the devil that you don’t” (Weekes 2020) or “mad as a hatter with a dagger and a dollar sign” (Weekes 2020), where Dallon exposes the knowledge that Tellexx will dispose of them if they no longer create profit. As I have mentioned in the past, there are two voices within Dallon; which makes this song the origin of the split between the Warner (the side working against Tellexx) and the Threatener (the side working for Tellexx). The Warner’s voice in “Leave Me Alone” is Dallon’s rebellion through his knowledge of the sinister means. Both Dallon and Ryan do not trust Tellexx’s values and know that the corporation wishes to spread its influence in music through time and space for more capital in the created industry. Yet there’s a split created by Tellexx during the experimentation in the video. Dallon changes from animated and active while singing to still and threatening when he says “go fly a kit until you’re tangled in the hang tree” (Weekes 2020). This change is the initial incident that sparks the main conflict in this reading: man versus self- Warner versus Threatener, Dallon’s good versus Dallon’s bad. Tellexx controls a part of Dallon, allowing him to freely sing and move around without being attached to anything. “Leave Me Alone” in the story proves to Tellexx that the pairing is suitable under these conditions, and they are sent into time, meanwhile Dallon’s internal conflict grows.
“Indoctrination” is a flashback. This piece serves the purpose to enlighten the audience of Tellexx’s means and plan, while also revealing exactly what Dallon and Ryan are resisting. Calling the section indoctrination reveals the malicious side of Tellexx as we hear the literal brainwashing the corporation uses on the “volunteer pairing” (iDKHOW 2020). This aspect of the piece gives listeners insight to what Dallon and Ryan have faced regarding thought reform and Tellexx’s corporate agenda. This part of the text reveals the side of Tellexx that listeners are suspicious of, confirming it as the antagonist against I Dont [sic.] Know How But They Found Me. By having the piece say that the pairing and Tellex will “work together to decode and / exploit the secrets of time and space for our benefit” (iDKHOW), it uses negative connotation to create rebellion through the verb “exploit”. Listeners side with Warner Dallon and Silent Ryan because we understand that Tellexx seeks the secrets of time for selfish matters: to spread their influence and create an industry that they control. It works alongside “Leave Me Alone” to initiate the two major conflicts: the internal conflict within Dallon, and the band versus the corporation. Through this, White Shadow character and the Threatener have clear origins. Both were created to “be sure that the company’s interests maintain the highest priority” (iDKHOW). This includes the White Shadow following Dallon and Ryan to prevent rebellion and acting in a way that places pressure against Mechanical Reproduction and the industry, and the Threatener acting as a character of Thought Reform within Dallon who is trying to eliminate the Warner’s awareness. This allows White Shadow to serve as a metaphorical reminder of failures of the past and would allow the Threatener to coax Dallon into serving Tellexx’s needs. Since Threatener is made by Tellexx, this side of Dallon uses an underlying fear to control Dallon and force him to continue working for the corporation.
Warner can see Tellexx’s malevolent goals. This side of Dallon, the narrator, uses his voice to create awareness of his opposition and to alert listeners, making “Mad IQs” an internal monologue. The song is Warner’s rebellion since Dallon is free to sing without a mask on, using voice to reveal the malicious intent behind the corporation’s goal to exploit time and space for capital. This aspect of the narrator exposes Tellexx as a toxic corporation that is taking over Dallon’s mind and being, hinting that this side of him is aware of Threatener’s presence. Through themes of controlling entity and voluntary ignorance, Warner is admitting that Dallon is losing himself inside the corporation by working for them. The brainwashing from the memories associated with “Indoctrination” has allowed Dallon to become the “voluntary victim” (Weekes 2020) and give up his sense of right and wrong, and his own identity, making him view himself as a being of Tellexx. The song alerts listeners that voluntary ignorance has led Dallon into a trap, one that he cannot escape. Warner attempts to alert listeners of the situation, hinting at ideas of Mechanical Reproduction with “replace you with machines” (Weekes 2020) and “paralyzed by the sum of your parts” (Weekes 2020) to hint that Dallon’s entity is controlled, making both Warner and Threatener’s voices compromised and unreliable; which would explain why Dallon is constantly moving around and is energetic during the video performances, because Threatener is telling him to do so for the benefit of the corporation.
This would explain Dallon’s disappointment at the end of “Nobody Likes the Opening Band”. This piece is the band’s first attempt at spreading influence and it’s a failure. The piece acknowledges how the band is only starting in the industry. By saying “chances are they won’t go far / career is sure to end” (Weekes 2020) the piece reveals that the industry discourages artists with different thoughts. Tellexx scorns those who go against their ideas, and make sure that industry develops in a way that benefits only one way of thinking, making Warner appear in the wrong as he tries to assist Dallon in making original music. White Shadow’s disapproval at the end of the video reveals that Dallon has failed to act and perform in a way that benefits the company, pushing his fear into reality. This enables Threatener to take control and hide Warner, further placing Dallon’s entity in the hands of the corporation and forcing him to lose himself just to be successful. This fear and idea of failure pushes Dallon to go to 1964 to begin spreading the band’s influence in “Do It All the Time” and then “Social Climb” in 1977, in which both are successful in spreading Tellexx’s ideas and values. However, this song’s video does more than highlight Dallon’s fall; it also reveals more of Ryan’s rebellion. By stepping away from the stage to scorn Dallon, Ryan further separates himself from Tellexx. His actions and moody facial expressions highlight his silent rebellion, one that Tellexx cannot fully control. If he’s not doing anything technically wrong, they cannot punish him despite their indoctrination strategies. He is watching what Tellexx is doing to Dallon and resists their attempts to control him by staying silent and using minimal actions. Doing this gives Ryan power over his entity and self, revealing to readers that his actions are reliable.
Ryan uses his autonomy in “New Invention” to drag Dallon out of Tellexx’s control and diminishes the grasp Threatener has on him. He takes Dallon to where Tellexx first created the split to return his entity to him. The video and song start off with the idea of a devil on the shoulder, which implies The Warner’s awareness of his own instability. He knows that Tellexx is still controlling him to a degree, and how this had created a split. The Warner knows that The Threatener is attacking him and is desperate to make listeners aware of what happened after “Leave Me Alone”. “You’ve got the devil on your shoulder” (Weekes 2020) implies the light/dark contrast that reoccurs in the other songs. The following line is directly from The Threatener because of the sudden shift: “you better shut your mouth just like I told ya” [sic.] (Weekes 2020). The Threatener uses it as a threat, implying that unless The Warner is quiet, he will intervene and take full control. The overlapping vocals at the end of this song would show the full conflict between the two sides. The Warner is having “bad dreams” (Weekes 2020) and can’t get away from the Threatener, even when asleep; meanwhile the Threatener is saying that Dallon is an invention created by Tellexx. Ryan’s attempt to restore Dallon’s mindset highlights the unreliable nature of Dallon’s character because of the indoctrination and experimentation from the past. With his identity compromised, Ryan knows that he is the only person who can push the conflict and create resistance. He resets Dallon not only to return his autonomy and identity, but also to give listeners a reliable narrator since he is still limited by Tellexx. Ryan cannot use his voice, but his actions speak for him throughout the video and song. Through Ryan’s actions, Tellexx’s control over Dallon is minimalized, yet the Warner and Threatener are still in conflict.
I’ll continue this as I can. School is about to restart for me.

This time on Great Albums, I talk about an album that actually isn’t older than I am for a change! Enter the spooky, haunted forest of The Knife with me, and find out why it was Pitchfork’s Album of the Year in 2006! Full transcript after the break.
Welcome to Passionate Reply, and welcome to Great Albums! Today, I’ll be tackling an album that’s more recent than anything I’ve done on Great Albums before, but it’s still old enough to start being considered a classic: The Knife’s Silent Shout, released in 2006, and hence seeing its fifteenth birthday in 2021. Silent Shout is a bit special to me, insofar as it was an album I loved as a teenager, back when it was still pretty new, and it was probably the first album I really fell in love with that wasn’t significantly older than I was. I was quite surprised when I eventually learned just how beloved Silent Shout is among music aficionados. This album has been lauded in critical circles, recommended as a “patrician” essential, and even considered one of the greatest electronic albums of all time! So, what’s the fuss about?
Before Silent Shout, The Knife were significantly closer to a conventional electronic pop duo. Their biggest claim to fame was the track “Heartbeats,” which scored some exposure after a cover of it was featured in a TV ad.
Music: “Heartbeats”
I like to think that “Heartbeats” contains the seeds of what’s great about Silent Shout, with its grinding synth backing and vocalist Karin Dreijer’s affecting wail. But its indie-pop brightness is something distinctively absent from their follow-up. Contrary to what might’ve been expected from an up-and-coming pop act, the sibling duo hunkered down in the studio and set about making something stranger and more exotic. On the technical front, they stripped the production down to its bare essentials, using just digital rhythms and two synthesisers to achieve everything we hear on the album. Stylistically, they took their sound into moody, atmospheric territory, imbuing it with this eerie, claustrophobic ambiance. It’s the musical equivalent of Frankenstein emerging from Mary Shelley’s mind, while the dreary “Year Without a Summer” had poisoned the world around her.
Music: “Silent Shout”
The title track here is also the opener, and introduces us to the frightful world of Silent Shout without mercy. This track is dominated by a powerful contrast of sound: low, thrumming bass, and these quick, but delicate and meandering synth arpeggios, carrying a distinctively Scandinavian flair. This bewitching synthesis of musical ideas makes sense in light of the diverse influences of the two siblings who made up The Knife: Instrumentalist Olaf Dreijer was strongly influenced by dance styles like house, trance, and progressive techno, as well as ambient electronic music, whereas vocalist Karin Dreijer was interested in guitar-based popular music, as well as the distinctive folk traditions of their native Sweden. Not unlike the Pet Shop Boys, they’ve got a wide gap between their influences, but that only serves to intensify the uniqueness of their work, which strikes listeners in a way the constituent musical parts of its heritage never could. Perhaps the most significant sonic feature of the album, though, is the extreme electronic distortions of Karin Dreijer’s voice.
Music: “One Hit”
If raw and everymannish vocals make music feel more in line with our everyday reality, the shocking and monstrous ones on *Silent Shout* render it a truly otherworldly work of art. While many people are quick to decry the “fakeness” of electronically mediated vocals--despite the fact that all art is, of course, artificial--I think Silent Shout proves, more boldly than anything else, just how uniquely powerful this musical tool can be in the right hands. Once you get past the sheer sonic force of the vocals, and their peculiar, skin-crawling timbres, you’ll find that most of the lyrical subject matter is actually painfully quotidian. “One Hit,” for instance, is told from the perspective of an all-too-normal “monster”: a domestic abuser, extracting and enforcing femininity and domestic servitude through the force of violence, dealing in “one hit, one kiss.” Sex, gender, and exploitation based upon them are among the album’s most central themes, and expressed harrowingly on tracks like “Na Na Na”:
Music: “Na Na Na”
Perhaps moreso than any other track on the album, “Na Na Na” is rendered borderline incomprehensible by vocal treatment--a trait magnified by its obviously meaningless title and chorus. But “Na Na Na” does have real lyrics, which tell the story of a life mediated by reproductive anatomy, defined by the rhythm of menstruation, coming from within, and the constant fear of sexual violence from without. It’s a tale of hidden anxiety, and experiences that go unseen and unspoken despite how common they are, making the haze of inscrutability laid over them all the more poignant. It’s clear that these issues are of high importance to Karin Dreijer, who has publicly described themself as “genderqueer,” despite both members of the band being remarkably sparing with all personal details. In another of the most striking vocal performances on the album, “We Share Our Mother’s Health,” Dreijer even gets to sing a duet with themself, and embody two distinct characters at once.
Music: “We Share Our Mother’s Health”
“We Share Our Mother’s Health” can be read in the light of gender and sex dynamics, as well, particularly if you’re willing to read its twin narrators as representations of masculinity and femininity. Personally, though, I think that’s a bit too easy, and really, a bit too cisnormative. I think the album is more interesting if we embrace the fundamental uncertainty of identity, and the transgressive queerness of it all. That said, I prefer to think of “We Share Our Mother’s Health” as a piece about capitalism--the endless toiling and scrounging for more material comfort and security, and the emptiness left behind when that proves to be no pathway towards true happiness. Besides, it’s not like sexism and the class struggle don’t feed off of each other in the end. This track’s sense of cacophony, with voices nearly battling to drown each other out, shows its more strident, aggressive, and downright angry side, which it delivers as powerfully as it does those moody atmospheres.
Silent Shout is the perfect title for this album, given its emphasis on voicing internal and private laments that go unheard--and voicing them with this terrifying sense of primal scream catharsis. While I initially wasn’t overly fond of the album art, it’s grown on me a bit now that I’ve seen it blown up to a larger size. This central disc shape is certainly evocative of a record or a CD, and its industrial-looking lattice structure, with a mottled, grimey-looking texture, helps conjure the impression of machine-age ennui.
I think a lot of the enduring appeal of Silent Shout is its sense of mystery. A lot of that mystery is deliberately crafted iconoclasm, and part of the art--while promoting the album, The Knife were photographed wearing sinister, elaborate beaked “plague doctor” masks, and their live performances from this period shrouded the band in darkness to obfuscate their appearances. They’ve refused to accept awards for their music or attend award ceremonies, including one memorable incident in which they sent costumed representatives of feminist organisation Guerrilla Girls in their stead. After Silent Shout, the duo created an opera based on Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species in 2009, and released one more studio album in 2013: Shaking the Habitual.
Music: “A Tooth For an Eye”
Shaking the Habitual received mixed reviews, and so far, has proven to be the siblings’ final work together, though they remain active as musicians independently, with Karin Dreijer recording under the moniker “Fever Ray.” Part of the great myth of Silent Shout is the fact that nothing else in their discography really quite approaches its specific sound, and sharp precision of conceptual focus. It’s like the album is tailor made to stand perfectly alone, outside of context, perhaps even outside of genre.
For many of us, this great legend of lightning-in-a-bottle genius is infinitely alluring. But I’ve never really bought into it too thoroughly myself. I obviously adore Silent Shout, and I think it’s a Great Album. But, unlike many people who have showered it with praise, often claiming that they don’t enjoy “electronic music” overall, I’ve always been interested in a lot of heavy, angry, creepy synthesiser-based music, and so I never thought too much of listening to this and liking it. People praise Silent Shout for being unlike anything else, but I think it sounds like a lot of post-industrial dark wave, like Attrition or Chris & Cosey, and its themes of feminist rage feel like a strong parallel to that of more recent stars of noise music such as Pharmakon and Lingua Ignota. But that’s not to devalue what Silent Shout does achieve! I think it *is* a unique album...in the way that a bat is a unique animal. Much as bats are not the only creatures who fly, but stand out for having developed that ability despite their mammalian heritage, Silent Shout doesn’t actually take direct inspiration from the earlier music it sounds the most like. It ended up there through the aforementioned eldritch alchemy, combining trance and folk and Kate Bush to get something new. That’s still something worth celebrating! Silent Shout needn’t be a perfect enigma to be a stirring masterpiece of an album.
My overall top track on Silent Shout, which I bet will be a popular choice, is “Forest Families.” It’s equal parts bleak and strangely anthemic, defined by both the unease of adapting to a plainer and harsher existence, outside the bounds of society, as well as the release that music itself provides to so many of us as we seek comfort. Since music is so important to me, I’m a real sucker for music about the importance of music, and it feels particularly well-placed on an album that’s a cathartic listen in so many ways. That about wraps this one up; thank you for watching!

How NASA Train Their Astronauts?
Astronauts - We have seen them floating in space. Many of us think of being an astronaut at some point in our lifetime. But becoming one is not that easy. In this article, we are discussing "How NASA Train Their Astronauts?".
An astronaut is a person trained by the human spaceflight program to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft. Members of the space program of Russia or the Soviet Union are called cosmonauts.
Although it is usually reserved for professional astronauts, the term is sometimes applied to anyone who travels in space, including scientists, politicians, journalists, and tourists.
Until 2002, astronauts were sponsored and trained exclusively by governments, either by the military or civilian space agencies. With the suborbital flight of the privately funded SpaceShipOne in 2004, a new class of astronauts has been created: commercial astronauts.
Tests and training for Astronauts
Astronaut training describes the complex process of preparing astronauts for their space missions before, during, and after a flight in areas around the world, including medical tests, physical training, extra-vehicular activity (EVA) training, The process includes training, rehabilitation process. as well as training on the experiments they will achieve while in space.
Virtual and physical training facilities have been integrated to familiarize astronauts with the conditions they will face during all phases of flight and prepare astronauts for microgravity environments.
Special considerations must be made during training to ensure a safe and successful mission, which is why Apollo astronauts received training for geology fieldwork on the lunar surface and research on best practices for future extended missions. such as the journey to Mars.
Astronaut selection and training are integrated processes to ensure that crew members are qualified for space missions.

Types of Training: Explained
The training is classified into five objectives in general and specific aspects: basic training, advanced training, mission-specific training, onboard training, and efficiency maintenance training.
In basic training, trainees must learn acronyms in medicine, language, robotics, piloting, space systems engineering, organization of space systems, and aerospace engineering.
Sixty to eighty percent of astronauts will experience space motion sickness, including pallor, cold sweats, vomiting, and anorexia, but candidates are expected to recover from the illness as training continues.
During advanced training and mission-specific training, astronauts will learn about the operation of specific systems and the skills associated with their assigned positions in a space mission.
18 months is typically required to complete mission-specific training for Space Shuttle and International Space Station crews. It is important to ensure the well-being, physical and mental health of the astronauts before, during, and after the mission period.
Proficiency maintenance training is intended to help crew members maintain a minimum level of performance, covering topics such as extracurricular activity, robotics, language, diving, and flight training. Astronauts also take classes.
They have a lot to learn apart from science. Sometimes they have to give speeches, so they take public speaking classes.
To be prepared for any emergency, astronauts undergo survival training. It can take up to two years of training to become a fully qualified astronaut.
You should learn the basics of spaceflight and the International Space Station, as well as how to be part of a team by flying a NASA T-38 training jet. After you finish your initial training period as an astronaut candidate, you will be given a technical assignment.
In this assignment, you will support astronauts who are already in space and who are training to go. Then you'll wait, sometimes years, for the next most exciting day of your life - the day you've been assigned to a space flight.
If you did well in your initial training and worked hard at your technical assignment, someday, the chief of the astronaut office will ask you if you still want to go to space.
If you are assigned to fly to the space station as an expeditionary crew member, you will need approximately 18 months of training. However, if you haven't received any specific training on space station systems, or if you don't have the required language skills, it can take more than 18 months.
It helps to have another expedition member trained as a backup and learn to speak Russian. Astronauts must be able to understand Russian so that they can speak to the Russian Mission Control Center and understand their instructors.
If you're going to live and work on the International Space Station, you'll need to speak at least two languages. Knowing more than two languages is even better!
Travel during training
During your 18 months of training, you will make several trips between the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia.
You can also go to Canada to take training on the robotic arm of the space station. In the future, the station's crew members will also train in Europe and Japan when modules from the European Space Agency and the Japanese Space Agency are added to the space station.
On-Orbit Operations Training
Now let's move on to on-orbit operations training... Astronauts are trained to prepare for launch conditions as well as the harsh environment of space.
The purpose of this training is to prepare the crew for events falling under two broad categories: events related to the operation of spacecraft - internal incidents; And phenomena related to the space environment - external phenomena.
During training, astronauts are introduced to the engineering systems of spacecraft, including spacecraft propulsion, spacecraft thermal control, and life support systems.
In addition, astronauts receive training in orbital mechanics, scientific experimentation, Earth observation, and astronomy.
This training is especially important for missions when an astronaut encounters multiple systems and this training is done to prepare the astronauts for events that may affect their health, crew health, or successful completion of the mission. can pose a danger to.
These types of events can result in failure of a critical life support system, capsule sedimentation, fire, and other life-threatening events.
In addition to requiring training for hazardous events, astronauts will also need to be trained to ensure the successful completion of their missions. External phenomena more broadly refer to the ability to live and work in the extreme environments of space.
This includes adaptation to microgravity, isolation, confinement, and radiation. Difficulties associated with living and working in microgravity include spatial disorientation, motion sickness, and vertigo.
During long-duration missions, astronauts will often experience isolation and confinement. This is known to limit the performance of the astronaut crew and hence training is aimed at preparing them for such challenges.
The long-term effects of radiation on the crew are still largely unknown. However, it is theorized that astronauts on their journey to Mars are likely to receive radiation doses 1000 times higher than that of a normal person on Earth.
As such, current and future training should include systems and procedures to protect astronauts from radiation.
Scientific Experimentation on ISS
Scientific experimentation has historically been an important element of human spaceflight and is the primary focus of the International Space Station.
Training on how to successfully perform these experiments is an important part of astronaut training, as it maximizes the scientific return of the mission.
Once in orbit, communication between astronauts and scientists on the ground can be limited, and time is strictly divided between the various mission activities. It is important that astronauts are familiar with their assigned experiments so that they can be completed in a timely manner, with as little interference from the ground as possible.
For missions to the ISS, each astronaut needs to become proficient in one hundred or more experiments. During training, the scientists responsible for the experiments do not have direct contact with the astronauts who will carry them.
Instead, scientists give instructions to instructors who in turn prepare the astronauts to perform the experiments. Much of this training is done at the European Astronaut Center.
For human experiments, scientists describe their experiments to astronauts who then choose whether or not to participate in the ISS.
For these experiments, astronauts will be tested before, during, and after the mission to establish a baseline and determine when the astronaut will be returned to baseline.
Virtual Reality (VR) Training
Sometimes astronauts can also take virtual reality training. Virtual reality has been explored as a technique for artificially exposing astronauts to the conditions and processes of space before they go into space.
Using virtual reality, astronauts can be trained and assessed to perform an EVA with all necessary equipment and environmental characteristics. This modern technology allows scenarios to be changed on the go, such as testing emergency protocols.
These training systems can reduce the effects of space motion sickness through a process of accommodation. Preflight VR training can be a counterpoint to the disorientation caused by space motion sickness and the weightlessness of microgravity environments.
When the goal is to act as a practice tool, virtual reality is usually explored in conjunction with robotics and additional hardware to enhance the effect of immersion or trainee engagement.
Conclusion
So, now you can understand that astronaut training is not for everyone. Even if you are very knowledgeable, but you do not have physical strength, you cannot be an astronaut.

No Apologies Needed - Pt.4
Pairing: Steve Rogers x reader Word count: 2630
Warnings: swearing, mentions of PTSD, Natasha and Sam being children
Summary: In which Steve is moping and pining and his friends are the worst.. possibly the best?
Story Masterlist
═══════▣◎▣═══════
“Call her.”
Steve raised his gaze from the phone spinning in his hand in alarm, only to see the source of the voice standing two steps from him with an amused smile. He stopped the absent motion with his hand and laid the phone next to him on the couch.
It had been several days since the incident at the bar and what followed it – including the medical attention given to the injured woman in the Tower –, but it was still very fresh in his mind. He was not about to admit that in front of Natasha Romanoff though.
“Call who?”
“Don't play dumb, Rogers. It doesn’t suit you,” the redhead huffed, rolling her eyes. Steve just sighed. Of course she knew.
“Why would I call her?” he asked, honestly curious.
There was no single reason to do that. He had selfishly used her as a cover at the bar, he had got her kidnapped and injured, but at least he had apologized profusely, made sure her injuries had been treated and they had parted ways with an offer for her to contact the Tower if she found herself in any trouble.
Not one reason to call her, no matter how much of space she had been occupying in his head.
“To ask her out, naturally.“
Well.
Naturally, Natasha would pick up on that too. So what, maybe there was more than just one reason why he was thinking about the woman and the character of some thoughts was very inappropriate given the trouble he had caused – just another thing to discourage him from making the call. Steve was almost ashamed of thinking about kissing her again to be honest.
“I'm not gonna do that,” he stated rather calmly, sure of the exclamation. He wouldn’t say he didn’t want to, because he didn’t like lying. He wouldn’t text her or call her, because he had to leave her alone. She deserved a peace of mind after what she had been through.
“Um, yes, you are.”
“I can’t do that,” he rephrased, staring into Natasha’s eyes with determination. He couldn’t and he wouldn’t.
“Wrong. You have to do that. You were making googly eyes at her. So was she.”
“I got her kidnapped!” he blurted out hastily, straightening in the seat.
“So? You handled one crisis together already.”
“Natasha-“
“And I didn't hear any complaints about the kiss either,” she noted with a knowing grin and Steve internally groaned, feeling the heat of a blush creeping up his neck. Now she hit the nail on the head precisely and Steve actually was ashamed.
“That's— that's not relevant!
“That good, huh?”
“Romanoff!”
“Grow a pair and call her, she was cute,” the spy invited him with a friendly smile, just like hundred’s times before when she had been trying to set him up with someone. Steve had thought there were over that.
Apparently not.
“I'm not calling her.”
Natasha shrugged and held out her hand. “Alright, then I will.“
“I swear to God, Natasha-“
Her eyes left his for a second and then she sighed, raising her hands in surrender.
“Okay, okay. I won't. And if you really don't wanna talk about it, I'll drop it.”
Steve blinked in surprise. Since when she was giving up so easily? There had to be a catch… except Steve couldn’t quite see it.
“Um… really?”
She shrugged again. “Yes. Really. Not a single word. It’s none of my business.”
“Thanks,” he murmured, a bit taken aback by the kindness and sympathy in her voice. She smiled at him warmly and he allowed himself to sink back into the couch, slowly relaxing. She patted his knee.
“You're welcome, Steve.”
Then she looked up again, watching something behind Steve’s back. It was when he finally noticed someone else had entered the room, now standing few feet behind him. Steve quickly spun to face the intruder, only to meet Sam Wilson’s grin and raised eyebrow.
“So… have you called her yet?”
═══════▣◎▣═══════
It was a movie night. A very tiring movie night which Steve was hoping to skip, but the others wouldn’t let him.
They all gathered in the common room – where Steve found his phone he had been missing ever since the harassment time starring Natasha and Sam –, putting on the first episode of some TV series about a vigilante archer, because apparently it had been Clint’s turn to pick a movie.
Honestly, Steve was barely paying attention, his brain otherwise occupied; he was still thinking about contacting the woman from the bar, for multiple reasons. He was toying with his phone absently with one hand, turning it over and over, while he pretended to follow what was happening on the screen.
He almost had a heart attack when his phone announced an incoming text.
Tony and Clint shot him dirty looks for disturbing the atmosphere, while Sam and Natasha looked his direction with almost excited expressions. Bruce just ignored it – until another beep followed the first one.
“Sorry,” Steve uttered, opening the text from an unknown number with a frown. Most of the people having his number were in the room with him, hence had no reason to text him.
When he read the words on the screen, his jaw dropped.
Hello, Steve. It’s nice to hear from you. I’m fine, except for my distaste for bars growing and occasional nightmares. Thank you for caring. I’m sorry if you beat yourself over what happened, because you don’t have to. I’m coping. ...
The text ended there, and Steve opened the next one on autopilot, seeing the message was simply too long to fit into one text.
… If you want to see for yourself, we can meet. Just give me a call when you’re free, I’m sure your schedule is more busy than mine. P.S. Of course I remember the wings and Sam. Just like Natasha Romanoff or you. You are all hard to forget. In a good way, I mean.
Steve simply stared at the screen speechless, unaware of Clint pausing the movie, the lights switching on or everyone observing him with suspension way more intense than when watching the movie.
Was it really who he thought it was? But… how? Why? And— ‘nice to hear from you’? ‘Thank you for caring’? How would she know she was still on his mind-
He quickly rolled up the page; and there it was, an undeniable prove of the conversation not being one-sided and not starting with her texting him.
There were texts sent this afternoon. Right after he had been teased by Sam and Natasha. Right after he had left his phone behind – or had he? Or had someone just snatched it from his pocket?
His ears started ringing, his pulse hammering in his temples, the edges of his vision getting a red frame. It didn’t take a genius, it really didn’t. His eyes found Sam, who was now looking everywhere but at Steve, while Natasha gave him a small smile.
Steve’s blood boiled. They were both in this. Both of them. Steve was about to commit not one, but two murders tonight.
“Cap? You alright there?” Clint asked, honestly concerned.
Steve felt like he was choking on air, unable to form a coherent sentence to answer the archer.
“What is she saying?” Natasha pried instead, leaning in. Steve turned off the screen, slamming the phone to the armrest, not even reading the messages he had supposedly written.
“Out. Natasha and Sam, stay,” he strained through his teeth, his jaw almost hurting with how tightly he clenched it.
“What-“
“Let’s go, Tony,” Bruce interrupted him, sensing the thick atmosphere suddenly falling on their group. Steve didn’t care for the curious and confused looks he received. He had bigger problems at hand.
And murders to commit, because what the hell-
“Before you say anything-“
“What the hell were you thinking?!” Steve exploded, rising to his feet to hover above his friends. “Are you out of your mind?!”
“Well, technically-“
“I don’t care about technicalities, Sam!”
Natasha rolled her eyes and snatched Steve’s phone before Steve knew what she was doing. Then, he just threw his hands in the air helplessly, his blood pressure probably rising alarmingly high. She wasn’t even trying to look ashamed while going through the reply! She even read the messages out loud for Sam!
Steve crossed his arms on his chest, glaring at the pair murderously as they wore a matching grin. His ribcage was expanding wildly with every breath at the sight of them.
“Are you done?” he asked icily and Natasha looked up before levelling herself with him – at least as much as she could; Sam rose to his feet too.
“Why is this a bad thing, Steve?” the spy questioned calmly, almost gently.
“Why is this a-“
“She wants to meet you, that’s great, man,” Sam supported Natasha and Steve shot him a look that would have him lying in a pool of blood if eyes could kill.
“Except I’ve never offered her a meeting, Sam.”
“Well, according to what the texts say-“
Steve grinded his teeth and grabbed the phone so he could at least read what ‘he’ had written. There were three texts and an attachment. Because the amount of text just wouldn’t fit into one. It took a lot of restraint not to crumble the device in his fingers at the revelation.
Hello. It’s Steve Rogers. I am very sorry for the numerous troubles I caused you and I feel bad for what happened, for how we parted ways. It feels like I should do more for you. Please, if you would be willing to meet, text me or call me at any time, I’ll try my best to answer. I hope you are well. SR
I’m aware that the way we met was disturbing at best and that I need to give you some sort of an identity confirmation. There’s a picture of Sam (He’s the man with wings, do you remember him?), showing how fed up he is with my moping and moral dilemmas. SR
Of course, if don’t feel like meeting, I understand and I promise you will never hear from me again. SR
The supersoldier was left speechless, not sure if it was from anger or surprise.
He had to give it to his friends – these texts, they were… very authentic. He could see himself sending those; polite and long, signed at least with initials, which was something his friends teased him about endlessly, always reminding him that texting was about being brief, contrary to love letters, and once someone had saved his number, he didn’t need to sign.
Also, the picture of Sam was a very plausible copy of his expression when he was being done with Steve. And all the words written were very true, luckily leaving out the fact that Steve was thinking of the woman in question in more than just one way. Natasha and Sam had both done an excellent job.
Except they hadn’t because texting in Steve’s name was just unacceptable – more so when it was about contacting a woman whom he had caused a trauma she was most likely trying to forget.
He glared at his friends, feeling his nostrils flare.
“You had no right to do this! If I leave aside that you invaded my privacy-“
“You left the phone on the couch and you don’t even lock that thing, Steve,” Natasha protested calmly.
“That still doesn’t give you the right to take it and just do what you want!”
“Probably, but it gives me the opportunity to do that and that’s on you, Cap.”
“Ugh! That’s not the point, Natasha!” he shot back frustratingly and she arched her eyebrow in a silent challenge. ‘And what is?’ “Did it cross your mind that she might be trying to forget the traumatic experience she lived through because of me? That she just wants to leave all of that behind?”
“Of course it did, Steve. But she wasn’t even hurt-“
“She’s a civilian, Natasha! Just because she only had bruises and burns from the ropes – which are still injuries, by the way – and wasn’t shot or something, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t suffer the consequences. Not everyone is used to this level of stress, not like we are-“
“Sorry, Steve, but she was just fine when I talked to her,” Sam interrupted, crossing his arms on his chest as well, as he referred to the meeting after she had been treated. “And from what the texts say-“
Steve whined in frustration, running his fingers through his hair, fighting the urge to just rip it out.
This was unacceptable! This was bordering with harassment, it was hurtful and— and just incredibly wrong!
“It doesn’t matter what the texts say, Sam! You of all people should know how PTSD works! She could just-“
“Exactly, I know-“
“Alright, stop it right here, boys,” Natasha interjected, stepping between the two men and Steve realized that he was leaning into Sam’s space, his hands curled up in fists and possibly ready to strike. “What’s done is done. You know you have to talk to her now, Steve. And preferably meet her, because reaching out and then not responding is a shitty thing to do.”
Steve aged several years only because he did his best not to hit Natasha for the nudge. Was she really trying to guilt him now? Seriously?
Why was it fucking working?!
Because you don’t want to disappoint her. Because you do want to meet her.
Steve closed his eyes, taking a very deep breath to calm down. He massaged the bridge of his nose.
“Of course I will text back or call now. Then I meet her to explain that it was not me who contacted her in the first place.” He snapped his eyes open, giving his teammates a pointed look. “And you two, you will come with me to apologize for hassling her.”
“Won’t do, Big Guy. How do you think she would feel when finding out it wasn’t you who cared – or at least decided to do something about it? We wouldn’t want to upset her like that, right? Now be a good guy and call your sweetheart, would you? We promise not to listen in…”
“Romanoff…” Steve growled and she only gave him a cheerful challenging smile.
“Tell me it won’t upset her if she learns the truth, Rogers. I dare you.”
Okay, that… that did pull the rug from under Steve’s feet. Just like when she had been guilting him. He didn’t want to upset the woman further. It would be a wrong thing to do and… and he liked her, so it would be even worse. Not that lying would be any better.
“I… I-“
Sam patted his arm patronizingly and Steve inhaled through his mouth harshly at his next words.
“You’re welcome, Buddy. Good luck.”
“Now let’s invite the others in so we can finish the pilot, alright? You go make your phone call.” Natasha didn’t even finish the sentence and already went to open the door for others.
Steve was tempted to toss the phone after her. Except despite all the circumstances being perfectly terrible, he felt a flutter of butterfly wings in his stomach at the thought of hearing your voice.
He was an awful person.
He walked past his friends out of the room and went to his own, hoping that at least there he could get some privacy. A lump grew in his throat as he dialled your number, stage fright creeping up his spine.
And then your timid ‘hi’ sounded from the speaker and Steve found himself smiling unwittingly, which was something he would later deny, especially in front of Sam and Natasha.
If the meeting which you had arranged for only two days’ notice went well despite him admitting what the truth about the texts was, he was not about to tell them either.

ok not technically about sharon but like does it seem like the team cap vs team Ironman stuff is worse now? Like I remember before it came out and even sometime after the team stuff was just which set of characters you liked more. Not so much the actual issues. And after it came out it seemed like most agreed that the situation was contrived a bit to make these guys fight. Which ...you know makes sense considering the comics its based on had the same problem ( though the comics are worse) 1/2
But now I see alot more salt ( especially at Cap) for the events of Civil War. Like not in like a this was ooc and I hate the direction they went , it was more no this makes sense for Cap and Tony actually, also Tony is right and Caps being a dick. I haven't noticed as much for cap stans @ Tony they don't really talk about CW much. Like was I just unaware of that drama right after CW? Or did people actually get saltier? 2/2
It’s (for lack of a better word) upsetting that this movie gets this much level of discourse over sides. This movie isn’t worth the debate of who was right/wrong.
Straight-up, I was always leaning Team Tony in the comics, and the movie made it stronger, because of how the story treated Wanda, Clint, and Scott. I hate the “I drop my life because Steve told me to” crap every movie writes, when two of those characters have families that they sacrificed for this?? No they wouldn’t the last movies they appeared in established that they wouldn’t?????
Listen, because I’m gonna rant and put it under the read more, but TL;DR: Civil War was already a bad story, and the movie was much worse, because it missed the most important part of the battle: the middle ground.
Civil War needs a strong knowledge of Marvel to go into comic-wise. Everyone is and isn’t a player, and you need to read it all to know where every single person stands, both hero and villain. It’s icon status would not exist if it didn’t have 1) the official public unmasking of Peter, and 2) the immediate death of Steve after. But there are so many other important people tied in that you can try to read the comic, but you won’t know seventy-five percent of the characters without doing research first. It doesn’t help that this is a story with seven official issues and a hundred tie-ins.
Comic Lesson:
The Sokovia Accords? Fuck that. It was the Superhero Registration Act, and this issue was set solely in the US. Why? A group of D-List heroes on a scuzzy reality show started a fight with a group of D-List villains, and one blew himself up right next to an elementary school. Many people died, majority being young children. At a funeral service that Tony attended (don’t think many others did, if any, that were heroes), a grieving mother spat in his face, hence why he backed the SHRA from the start. When it was presented to everyone, Sam said fuck that, and officially, Falcon is the first to vocally go against it. Then Steve did it on a SHIELD aircraft to Maria Hill’s face (she was relatively new when this began). Because Steve and Tony were the most public figures on each side, they were the faces, but they were not the showrunners. SHIELD and Maria Hill ran Team Iron Man with Reed Richard’s tech. Nick Fury from an undisclosed location used his many secret hideouts and funds to run Team Captain America in secret, with Steve and Sam being the ones running as the face of the fight.
Major players include but are not limited to: Hank, the FF (mostly Reed and Sue), Hulkling, Tigra, Daredevil, Goliath (who dies in battle), clone Thor (who kills Goliath), Punisher, etc.
The one thing that was present throughout the whole story was side-switching. Every issue had someone switching sides. It was a major ordeal every time, and everyone had reasons. Peter because SHIELD was shady. Cassie Lang and YA Vision because they wanted safety and Scott had recently died (not because of CW, but Wanda was killing people). Sharon was threatened into staying with SHIELD by Maria but was a liaison to assisting Steve. Half of the heroes in the movie weren’t even in the actual book event. Wanda was in hiding. Clint was looking for her (and then banging her, because comic book Clint gets around). Scott, as mentioned, was dead. T’Challa just got married and didn’t want to be involved. This Vision was a different version using the body of Iron Lad, and his name was Jonas (adult Vision is named Victor Shade). Bucky was running missions for Fury in other countries. I’m still miffed that they got to be involved but the movie didn’t have room to include Fury and Maria, the two people actually in charge in this game.
I’ve read this comic several times. I took a class where we had to read the book, watch the film, and discuss sides. And here’s the conclusion: no matter whose side you take, you can agree with the other side, and you’re actually in the middle ground of it, but if you had to pick, this one was slightly more persuasive. It’s a very complex issue that the story went into. Tony saw unchecked heroes as a risk and didn’t want to have another incident that would cost hundreds of innocent lives. Steve saw government control as the potential unchecked risk and didn’t want heroes to be controlled by a single power. But they saw the other side as right too: Tony tried to stop SHIELD from apprehending Peter when he defected, and Steve realized that their fighting was proving the point of how dangerous heroes could be when civilians physically had to stop him from killing Tony. Because that was the point: they were both right and wrong. Superheroes could be dangerous, but government registration and control could abuse them and manipulate heroes. Didn’t help that the Negative Zone was the fucking worst thing ever, thanks Reed, Tony, and Maria.
The movie took out the middle ground, and moved this into international territory. It wasn’t one country, but 117. It wasn’t a group of unchecked heroes who caused the major conflict, but one specifically. It wasn’t dozens of heroes, but just a dozen. It wasn’t children dying, it was rulers of countries. And it wasn’t one major storyline that the movie was focused on, but several (the Winter Soldiers, Bucky, Zemo). It liked two things about the comic: two groups of heroes fighting, and Steve beating the shit out of Tony. And this story was adapted by a pair of writers and a pair of directors who don’t care about following the canon of other movies, including their own, so they just did whatever the hell they wanted and bastardized a story that was already a mess and a half to begin with. And it took a story that made you think every character’s decision and motive through and decided nah, fuck that. We’re gonna make major decisions, and you have to pick one to agree with, because the other was designed for you to hate them. Civil War was a debate, not a literal war, Russos, thank you very much.
The movie took a shit approach to the question of whether or not heroes need checks and balances, because it wasn’t interested in answering that question, it liked battle scenes because you like the paintball episodes they directed for TV. If you’re in 2020 and wanna still fight about who was right and who was wrong in the movie, the answer is: the movie is wrong, go read the comic. Cap 3 is the worst Marvel adaptation, and a strong contender for worst movie. I could rip this shit apart all day.

King Jerry Ltd
BACKGROUND
King Jerry is an Indian full-service airline, based in Delhi, with its hub at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The carrier commenced operations on 15 June, 2014 with its inaugural flight between Delhi and Kolkata. The airline had carried more than three million passengers by June 2016 and as of Sep 2019, has a 6.2% share of the domestic carriers. The airline serves 60 airports in India (20- International, 40- Domestic) with a fleet of 30 Boeing 737 and 22 Airbus A320 Aircrafts, operated on profitable routes with higher passenger load factors. It operates 560 flights/day.
HISTORY
Initially being a low-cost carrier, King Jerry offered only economy class seating. To keep fares low, it did not provide complimentary meals on any of its flights, though it provided a buy-on board in-flight meal program. No in-flight entertainment was available initially. It offered services, such as a pre-assigned seat, multiple cancellations and priority check-in, to its passengers who are willing to pay a higher fare. In September 2015, the company announced its tie up with SonyLIV on demand video app for providing its fliers with entertainment options at the airport and in flight.
FUTURE PROSPECT
The airline will be introducing its first international destination, Colombo, with flights connecting to Chennai. Company will be introducing operations in total of 5 international destinations with 12 short- haul flights. London will be the airline's first long-haul destination and will be launched after successful operation of short-haul international flight.
The airline will be expanding its fleet with 4 Boeing 787 Dream liner aircraft to operate on international routes.
CORPORATE AFFAIRS
In November 2018, it entered into talks with an Indian airline over a possible merger which ended in a no deal. According to the airline, it is a planned strategy due to the tough aviation environment in India and to focus on maintaining profitability rather than on capturing market share and increasing the destinations and fleet size. But later contradicting its statement in 2019, it bagged the fifth largest carrier in the country with an 7.9% market share following the announcement about expansion. The airline is headquartered in Delhi, India. Shantanu has served as the Managing Director of the airline since its inception.
HR BUDGET
*The total estimates for the headers with no change will remain constant for next period.
NEWS AND RUMORS
1. A passenger misbehaved with a female flight attendant. And according to the practice, she conveyed the incident to the cockpit and reported to the chief flight attendant. As the flight had already taken-off, the chief decided this to be the first thing to be looked in as they land and for now, they had the passenger flex-cuffed as directed by other pit members. But when this was reported to King Jerry, the company didn't take any actions against the passenger and instead fired the flight attendant after a heated argument. Owing to this, 5% of the female flight attendants resigned and other employees went on strike because of this irresponsibility on part of the company and not following the air rage rules.
2. One of the competitor airlines, Jet airways, is facing a shutdown. And because of this shutdown, a large pool of talented employees is available to King Jerry .These people are in search of job opportunities and are applying at various vacant positions.
3. King Jerry had a technological redesign and now owns various upgrades. One of the upgrades is replacement of traditional baggage system with latest Baggage Handling Mechanism. It has led to tremendous decrease in the requirement of ground staff. Hence the company is planning to transfer few of the excess employees for the new international routes and fire the rest.
· Post- Installation; 1 employee will be laid off for every 5 employees on International Airports whereas, 3 employees will be laid off for every 10 employees at Domestic Airports. Transferring will lead to 4.5% increase in accommodation cost and 9% increase in training cost.
4. Budget 2020 has proposed a monetary limit on the tax-exempt contribution from the employer to NPS account. According to the proposal, employer's contribution to EPF and NPS exceeding more than Rs 7.5 lakh in a financial year will be taxable in the hands of the employee.
Table 1.1 Compensation Sheet
Table 1.2 Types of Trainings
Each training program has a duration of 2-3 weeks in a batch of 15 employees.
*The data is based on various previous surveys and feedback forms.
Table 1.3 Percentage increase in respective training benefits
Note: The participant percentage refers to the number of responses from participants opting for that particular training. For ex, if 25% of the responses from participants opt for flight simulator training then the increase would be 38% for those participants.
Task at hand:
1. Each participant is required to estimate the number of employees to be hired/ fired based on the news and rumors provided, thereon ascertain the total compensation of employees for Oct-Mar. (Reasons for each to be mentioned in the word document) (Refer table 1.1)
2. To strengthen its profile in the overseas market, the company is planning to train its employees. 2 options are to be selected by the company from among the 4 available training options. Determine the cost and update the budget accordingly, maximizing the benefits derived. (Reasons for each to be mentioned in the word document) (Refer table 1.2 and 1.3)
3. Special Hiring decision: There will be a vacancy for a station manager soon. The station manager is the top manager in one of the airline's airport and is responsible for all activities at the airport, from ticketing passengers to handling the fueling and turnaround of an aircraft. The station manager usually supervises one or two ticket desks, two baggage handlers and one or more aircraft servicing people. He/she works from the first flight in the morning until the last flight at night, often a 10-12 hours a day, 5 to 6 days a week, he/she must be good with the public and very passenger oriented. when anything out of ordinary happens. it falls on the station manager to make things right with the passengers. The station with the opening, currently has an all-male crew belonging to majority. The only requirement in the job advertisement is that the application has "related experience in the airline industry". You have passed the list of applicants down to three individuals. whom will you select? (State reasons in word document)
Potential Candidate 1
A middle aged, minority female who was formerly a cabin attendant for an airline that went bankrupt. She received excellent annual evolutions and won award for "Cabin Attendant of the Year". She is bright, eloquent and seems to be highly motivated. She stated that she could learn technical parts of the job quickly (supervision of baggage
handling, fueling, etc.). She is the only applicant with a college degree. One of your staff people stated "If we are going to stay ahead of minority hiring practices, now is the time to start.”
Potential Candidate 2
A middle-aged majority male who was assistant station manager for five years for a large airline who wanted to relocate. He appears to be pleasant and easy going and has good recommendations from his former employer. He could step in and immediately do the job well.
Potential Candidate 3
The young ticket agent at the airport where the opening has occurred. She has been working for the airline for two years and has very good performance evolutions. She worked as a baggage handler a few times when needed but has not done some of the other jobs she would be supervising. The out- going station manager has stated, " I think, in time, she could learn how to be a good station manager. She will make some mistakes, but everybody does. The company should send a strong message to employees that promotion from within is one of our policy.
4. Come up with a separate PPT presentation with strategies that King Jerry airlines can opt for COVID. Divide your strategies into two halves
o -Sustenance and cost cutting strategies during COVID
o -Revival and growth strategies post COVID
5. The top executives of King Jerry Airlines have been publicly been exposed to be harassing airhostesses and female flight-crew in exchange of not firing them or offering promotions. Both the CEO and CMO of the company have had evidence leaked against them for abuse of authority. A case has been filed against them and investigation is being done on King Jerry's hiring ethics. As the PR team of the company, DEFEND your employees and release a statement to regain public trust as well as the trust of female employees.

The World is Cruel, Beautiful, and Chiastic
Or, because I see people talking about this and I wrote this during Tokyo Ghoul:re’s final arc (which ended up being accurate), I wanted to be a nerd and outline just what Shingeki no Kyojin’s chiastic structure is.
A chiastic structure is a narrative structure used for millennia in storytelling. It refers to a paralleling structure, wherein events or motifs parallel other events and motifs. If you chart it out, it forms a chiasm or a ring (depending on if you feel like charting a triangle or a circle. (It’s also referred to as ring structure if you go with the latter; hence “come full circle.”)
Chiastic structure has been used for ancient epics (the Iliad and Odyssey, Paradise Lost), religious texts (many narrative books of the Bible, including Ruth, Jonah, Samuel, Genesis, and the Synoptic Gospels use it), and modern classics in both literature and cinema like Harry Potter and Star Wars employ it. In anime/manga, Tokyo Ghoul used it, and Bungou Stray Dogs strongly appears to be using it (but it’s harder to say definitively or to chart it out because we seem to be in upwards end of the middle arc right about now).
So, what’s SnK’s chiastic structure?
A) Fall of Shiganshina: The World is Cruel (and beautiful)
B) Training Corps (yes, it belongs here): Cruelty to Children
A) Trost: Cruel Loss, Beautiful Hope
C) Female Titan: Cruel End to Friendship
ABC) Clash of the Titans: The World is Cruel and Beautiful
C) Uprising Arc: Beautiful Beginning to Friendship
A) Return to Shiganshina: Cruel Loss, Beautiful Hope
B) Marlay: Cruelty to Children
A) Final Arc: The World is Beautiful (and cruel)
Of note, this is not me saying that none of the other arcs parallel each other--they clearly do. This is just a look at the chiastic structure in particular.
A note about the AB pattern. Arcs that have A all have common elements even if they most directly parallel the arc they line up with. The central chiasm contains elements of all three.
Fall of Shiganshina Arc: The World is Cruel (and also beautiful)
I’m not sure I need to say much here lol. The story’s opening chapters are renowned for their horror and display of cruelty. Yet we see beauty too in the Jaeger family having taken in Mikasa, in Eren defending Armin from bullies.
And we see it in how Hannes saves Eren and Mikasa.
And there’s more cruelty in the vow Eren makes, which, of course, he’s now bringing to fruition:
The Training Corps Arc: Cruelty to Children
Yes, this one belongs here. I know that it technically occurs post-Trost in the manga, but it’s the only flashback arc in the entire story, and I think we’d all agree that pacing-wise it’s... not well placed post-Trost. The anime did a good by moving it to immediately follow the intro arc.
Basically, the main theme here is that innocent kids lose innocence. From the humorous to the cruel, we see it. The kids shouldn’t be joining the military; it’s awful that they are.
It introduces Sasha:
And makes sure to show us them just being kids:
Additionally, it shows us the determination Eren has to work hard and be the one to destroy the titans:
Eren’s determination leads to his success in his training, but as we’ll later see, his obsession is destroying him.
Trost Arc: Cruel Loss, Beautiful Hope
Or, the arc that contains one of my favorite moments, but also almost led to me stopping watching SnK when I first got into it.
The arc begins with our first rematch: humanity vs. the titans, round two. (Thus, it parallels the Fall of Shiganshina).
So let’s discuss that favorite moment of mine: when the 104th teams up to defeat the titans. Even Annie, who is later revealed to be an enemy, saves Connie.
Trost, of course, contains the first big “WTF” plot twist of the story: when Eren is “reborn” out of the belly of a titan. When a character is in an enclosed space in literature, especially one with liquid, viscera, and blood, it’s probably a symbolic rebirthing scene. From, at that point, Eren’s lowest moment of defeat, Eren realizes he has the powers to change things.
But Eren is not the only one who comes to an important realization this arc. Like the Fall of Shiganshina, Return to Shiganshina, and the final arc, there is EMA focus. Mikasa makes a decision to live on despite loss:
And Armin receives affirmation of his self-worth and realizes that even if fighting isn’t his skill, strategizing is just as valuable:
This arc also contains Marco’s death, marking the first time the 104th have to cope with the loss of one of their own.
The arc’s final fight is concluded with Levi Heichou shows up to save the day.
And, of course, the concept of blocking the hole in the wall is first brought up (this time with a boulder), and the military needs to make a choice about whether to use Eren or exterminate him; Armin is able to convince them to trust Eren.
The Female Titan Arc: A Cruel End to a Friendship
The arc contains a notable moment of Eren deciding to trust his colleagues--Levi’s squad--only to lose them all.
Additionally, Eren’s relationship with Annie ends poorly (obviously. Should Annie be in the paths right now, as she likely is, I don’t think she’ll respond well to Eren either and is more likely to help take him down). Like Eren taught Mikasa to fight and to live, Annie taught Eren how to fight as her father taught her.
What’s notable about this is that Annie’s relationship with her father is cruel and beautiful--he clearly wanted nothing more than for Annie to survive and he’s still waiting for her. Annie embodies this dichotomy as well: Armin notes that she is exceptionally kind, yet the world doesn’t give her a choice. She is so kind that she spares Armin and goes along with his plan to capture her despite knowing it is a trap, because she does not want to hurt friends, because she wants to be a good person. Annie wears a cold mask, but she is truly kind.
The Female Titan Arc concludes when Eren accepts the monstrous part of himself, using everything he has to fight Annie. It’s not a coincidence that the arc ends with Annie ripping off part of the wall, revealing the titans within. This symbolizes that the structures that ostensibly were erected to protect society are built around the monstrous, and thus sets up the Uprising Arc.
Clash of the Titans Arc: The World is Cruel and Also Beautiful
My favorite arc.
It contains several important elements: it’s where Ymir hints at the true enemy of the story, and it’s where we start to see that the Survey Corps might be capable of cruelty as well.
Erwin sacrifices his arm, foreshadowing his later sacrifice of his life, Ymir and Historia assure each other of their love (almost like love, connection, and humanity are braided themes)...
It’s also where Eren is revealed as the Coordinate, and where the central relationship of the story as @linkspooky writes (and theorizes) about here develops in a moment that is truly beautiful and cruel. Mikasa declares her love for Eren, but Eren pulls away because he needs to fight titans to keep living.
It also foreshadows and acts as an inverse to Eren’s tragic current choice: he chose to fight instead of to accept love, but he had little choice then and was acting heroically. He had choices now.
Additionally of note, since this arc is the central chiasm of the story, it contains elements from both the A and B parallels. Such as, for example, Sasha receiving development and the focus on the suffering of children, from Sasha saving Kaya (beauty) to Nanaba and the others dying to protect the 104th:
Also, the Hannes storyline reaches its conclusion with Hannes’ death, proving for once and for all that Hannes is no coward:
The death of Hannes is symbolic of the EMA trio moving from a child stage to an adolescent stage in their metaphorical development. It parallels Carla’s death, and Levi’s (the final mentor figure for EMA) current near-death experience (I don’t think Levi needs to die nor do I think he will at this point, because he seems to have survived the parallel incident).
The Uprising Arc: A Beautiful Beginning to a Friendship
There are quite a few parallels here with the Female Titan Arc. We have two parallels with Annie’s complex relationship with her father: Historia and Levi (with Kenny for Levi). Like with Annie’s father, Kenny is not a great father figure, but he did want Levi to survive and gives him a life-saving tool right before he dies (the titan serum). Historia has the direct opposite relationship with her father as Annie: Annie’s father loves her but treats her harshly to teach her to protect herself; Historia’s father appears to treat her kindly, claiming he’s always wanted a relationship with her, but he actually does not care about her at all.
Historia and Eren’s relationship also foils Annie and Eren’s: if Annie and Eren’s relationship leads to Eren accepting the monstrous/titan part of himself, Historia and Eren’s relationship leads to Eren accepting the weak, unspecial part of himself.
Additionally, this arc focuses on the new Squad Levi, replacing Petra, Oruo, and the others--and this time, Squad Levi really does come in clutch, saving Eren and Historia. These scenes are deliberately paralleled--as in, there is a literal flashback in the Uprising Arc to Eren having to make a decision re: Squad Levi. When Eren acts on his own instincts this time, he saves them.
Return to Shiganshina: Cruel Loss, Beautiful Hope
Like the Trost Arc, it contains a rematch between humanity and their enemies; this time, however, it is not mindless titans who are the real enemies, but Bertolt and Reiner (and Zeke), demonstrating how personal this fight has been (going from a journey of strange monsters-->friends-->your own internal heart in the current arc). It also, on a more basic level, contains the goal of plugging up a hole in the wall, this time with Eren’s hardened shell.
It also contains the 104th teaming up to take down an enemy. Only, this time, instead of Annie and Mikasa dealing the killing blows to titans about to kill Sasha and Connie, they are teaming up to kill Reiner, a former friend.
Like in Trost, when Eren was “reborn” out of the belly of a titan, Eren experiences a moment of awakening here. He realizes he is not the hero of this story: Armin is.
And likewise, Mikasa makes a decision to accept loss and live on.
And Armin receives affirmation of his self-worth and his strategizing doesn’t just save Eren this time, but potentially humanity:
This arc also contains the flashback to Marco’s death and, of course, Bertolt’s death, which heavily, heavily parallels Marco’s. Like with Marco, Bertolt’s once-friends are watching and weeping, but they choose not to help him for the sake of their mission (again: you become the monster; this is however NOT a commentary on the morality of such decisions, but instead is an observation. Bertolt’s death, even if you choose not to blame the Survey Corps, is horrific and agonizing and cruel).
And of course, guess who saves the day and determines the future of the story? Levi Heichou. However, again, in keeping with the motif of conflicts getting more personal, Levi does not have to kill a monster titan (in fact, he fails to kill Zeke, though he does take him down). Instead, he has to choose to let his best friend die. Like in Trost, where the military needed to make a choice about whether to listen to Eren, Levi chooses to save Armin (though not because of Eren’s please necessarily, but because of his own care for Erwin).
The battle of Shiganshina, like how the Battle of Trost ends with Eren emerging as humanity’s hope, ends with a revelation to change the story forever. Humanity is not extinct.
The Marlay Arc:: Cruelty to Children 2.0
Innocent kids lose innocent in both the past and present in this arc. The arc sets up copious Reiner and Eren parallels, showing how they both worked hard in training to become heroes.
Additionally, we see that being perpetuated to the next generation in Gabi and Falco, Zophia and Udo. They are just children, but they are killed horrifically and fight in wars as part of their training (it’s even worse than the Paradis military):
Like all other B parallel arcs, it also contains focus for Sasha. She chooses not to kill a child, providing a beautiful counter from the cruelty of Eren’s actions. Yet, she pays the price for this beauty, as she is cruelly murdered. Sasha may not be a child herself anymore, but she is still a person, and the focus on food for her in the moment of her death reinforces this.
We also see that our grown-up children are losing innocence as well. Eren becomes the monster he swore to destroy, becoming a titan to murder innocents.
Final Arc: The World is Beautiful (and cruel)
I know the emphasis right now is on cruelty and I don’t mean to minimize it. From Historia to how Eren treats his friends, to what Eren’s currently now doing, it’s painful.
It contains a return to Shiganshina, like the Fall of and Return to Shiganshina arcs. And like the first arc, it irrevocably changes the world. On this day, humanity has received not a grim reminder, not a choice.
Instead of Mikasa and Armin receiving help from an adult to save Eren (Hannes), they are the adults this time. It is up to them to save Eren from himself, which likely is not going to be kind enough to spare Eren’s life this time. That said, I do think/expect a moment of Eren remembering his humanity in the end. And we already know it ends with life and freedom.

Deadly Fortune, Book 1, Chapters 1-5
So I started reading the only English translation I could find of the DMC4 “Deadly Fortune” novels to mine them for good character info. I have no idea if anyone else will be interested, but I’ll post the notes I’m taking here. Mostly this is just a retelling of the game, but there are scenes that aren’t shown and some interesting context/internal monologue things to be found. I skipped the first chapter because it was just Dante and Trish being cryptic, and I didn’t notice anything interesting. I’ll post more as I work my way through the novels.
The chapters are referred to as “stages.” Stuff in bold are things I found particularly interesting. Everything is under the cut because I’m a wordy fool and I didn’t want to drown anyone’s dashboard.
EDIT: Forgot the friggin link to where I found the translation: https://originaldmc.github.io/DivinityStatue/Downloads.html
Stage 02 (Pregame)
Kyrie visits Nero (he doesn't live with her). She sometimes brings little gifts to the knights in the barracks.
Nero doesn't know if his arm is poisoned or possessed
Kyrie is one year older, treats Nero like a kid when something bad happens
Kyrie hasn't sung in front of a big crowd before (though she has sung in church)
Attendance at the Festival of the Blade isn't mandatory, so Nero finds an excuse not to go every year -- except this one since Kyrie asks him if he's going and she's performing
Nero's arm was injured one month prior to the game. The demons were in the 'forests of the suburbs.' (Later he says it's Mitis forest, though when he describes getting to the scene he doesn't actually go that far?) Only three knights were sent because the ones that show up near the city are usually weak, but this time there were a lot of them. Nero isn't considered a 'team player,' and he thinks that he is about as far from being a hero as you can get, so he isn't given tasks like that.
Nero is given tasks that require him to work alone and thinks that even the order has secrets he wants to keep. His job is to deal with humans who've been possessed by demons that the Order thinks can't be saved. He is expected to kill them without a trace (OMG!). Basically, the Order doesn't want the people to lose faith in them if a devout follower is possessed by a demon. The people are told that Sparda will protect them, and if they knew the truth it would look bad for the Order. Nero says he isn't happy about killing people, but if no one else will do it, he will, since it's very difficult to save someone who's possessed. So Nero is basically a hit man jeeeeeeeeeeeez.
Another reason Nero is shunned is that he likes using guns. Being the 'Order of the Sword,' they place a huge emphasis on swords. Nero doesn't care about that -- if it kills demons, why not use it? -- and since there are no gunsmiths, he built Blue Rose himself. (He talks a lot about the gun a lot and why he chose a revolver too. Kid knows his guns, though he says he's not a 'serious gun expert.')
The 'dean of the Orphanage' where Nero was raised is an old lady named Sister Xista. (Nero comments that he knows she loves the orphans she works with.)
Kyrie was out in the forest with the orphans on an outing. Ah! She had come back from Mitis forest and was in the city when they got attacked by (30!) scarecrows. Nero runs along the rooftops to get there (and is really casual about it like a normal person could just vault up there and run).
The three knights are Josh (who dies -- poor Josh), Sagan, and Tonio (who seems to be in charge? He's also old fashioned, uncomfortable around Nero, and also 'obsessed with honor.').
Apparently Red Queen is so suped up that if Nero uses it too close to people he could accidentally burn them.
Nero likes that Kyrie is the type of person who would protect other people at the risk of herself but also kinda hates it since she could get hurt.
There's a very interesting passage where Nero thinks about how many of the knights want to become famous and are very into the legend of Sparda, but Nero feels they should be focusing more on the 'good heart of his struggle to protect humanity' part of the story. He also feels they should be less mad at him for jumping into the fight and stealing their thunder and instead comfort Kyrie and the children who were nearly killed.
An Assault pops in through a 'magic array' right behind Kyrie as she's trying to tend to Josh's wound. This is where the "Kyrie, run!" memory from when Nero blacks out in Agnus' lab comes in. Josh tries to defend her, but gets slashed up. His blood actually spatters on Kyrie's face, who is too stunned to react. Nero revvs Red Queen all the way up and jumps at the demon, can't block an attack which is how his arm gets hurt. He burns out the Exceed system so he can't really protect himself. Sagan and Tonio jump in to help while Josh gets Kyrie and the kids away. The demon chases them and injures a kid named Kelly and kills Josh. Nero finally takes it out with his gun.
One of the kids is named Gili.
The Order tries to hide the incident, but since a bunch of kids were involved, it's a bit hard. Josh was an orphan (like Nero), and all of the other adults were forbidden from talking about it. The whole thing seems to piss Nero of since Josh died and Kyrie was injured. He decides to try to get stronger, and apparently Sagan and Tonio have the same idea since they start training a lot.
Nero refers to a building called the 'Sword House' which used to be the Order's HQ until the 'new Faculty HQ' was built. Credo's office is still in the Sword House, and Nero tries to avoid making too much noise on the creaky stairs. Hahaha! Credo asks Nero "How are you so slow?" Credo's got a new mission for Nero -- Nero refers to it as 'dirty work.'.
There's an 'Investigation Bureau' for the Order.
Credo wants the mission dealt with quietly since today is a festival day. He DOES very seriously ask if Nero is okay to fight. Which Nero sarcastically replies "Will someone else do it if I say no?"
Red Queen is out at the 'technical bureau' for repairs because it has a lot of special parts. Credo gives Nero one of the Caliburn swords (the Durandal is the officers' sword type). He also tells Nero not to use his gun because it'll make noise and draw attention. Nero notices that Credo is out of sorts. He's apparently pretty upset about Nero being injured, Josh being killed, and all of it being covered up.
There's some guy named Kars (or Karls? The translation keeps changing his name) who Nero asked to buy that cute necklace for Kyrie. Nero is nice and apologetic for keeping the guy waiting, which throws Kars off a bit.
The Devil Bringer hurts as well as glows when there's a demon around.
Nero beats up a bunch of Scarecrows and heads back to go listen to Kyrie sing. That's literally the only reason he's going since he doesn't actually have to be there at the ceremony.
Okay, so Fortuna Castle is where Sparda supposedly lived when he was lord. It's used as an Art Gallery these days, and citizens are free to come and go as they like. The 'technical bureau' room (the underground lab) isn't known to most people, though, and their purpose is to build weapons to fight demons.
Agnus loves research, teaching, and Sanctus apparently. He also talks to Yamato. It doesn't talk back, but he's mainly complaining to it about not being able to fix the damn thing. He found Yamato a year ago on the outskirts of Fortuna. Even though the sword is only mentioned a few times in ancient books, Angus recognized it right away. In the translation Devil Arms are referred to as Magic Swords -- which might be how the Order thinks of them? In any case, they lost track of Sparda's swords after he left 2000 years ago.
Apparently you can repair Devil Arms. Some repair themselves overtime, other kinds can be fixed if you have the right type of material. Yamato is neither of those. Agnus thinks if Yamato was made from a Devil, then this makes sense -- BUT if that was the case it should've lost all its power when it was broken. Instead, Yamato still has lots of power. He calls the sword 'unpleasant' after yelling at it. Heh.
Gloria shows up with a guy named Greg. Agnus hates Gloria and is apparently a misogynist. As if we need another reason to dislike him. He doesn't trust her and also thinks it's distasteful for women to flaunt their stuff as a 'weapon.' Also Gloria clearly likes harassing him because he's such an uptight jerk.
The Order has never accepted 'foreigners' into its ranks before (hence some of Agnus' distrust). There's a line about the church paying attention to 'the birthplace and family' of its members -- which is interesting. I wonder if that's part of the reason some of the knights are weird about Nero? Because no one knows who his family is…
Gloria told them she was a treasure hunter and that's how she found the Devil Sword Sparda. Agnus thinks the sword is basically a holy relic since it was Sparda's actual sword. She caused quite a stir when she showed up and asked to speak to Sanctus (the knight who met her thought she was his mistress!).
Gloria also brought along the Devil Arms that were used to power the smaller Hell Gates (lol, Trish just swiped all of Dante's stuff!). The real Hell Gate can only be opened with a complete Yamato.
Stage 03 (Start of the game)
Nero bought his headphones from Kars.
Nero thinks the preaching is bullshit. It was Kyrie and Credo and their parents that showed him love and warmth, not some 'sinless' god. He thinks it's weird that their parents were so kind to him, and that it was probably because he has 'silver' hair like Sparda is said to have. There's an interesting line: "I don't have parents, so in their hearts I might be someone who has a relationship with Sparda."
He feels they were good people, if blind and naive, and seems angry they were killed by demons. It happened before he was a knight, and he doesn't know the circumstances. There's a reference to them investigating the ruins in Mitis Forest when they were killed? But that's why he doesn't believe in Sparda -- because why would god let good people like that die at the hands of demons? He also says that he could understand if it was someone like him (!) but not people who were devout, kind believers.
Very Vergil line from Nero: "So, I don't believe in God, I only believe in power."
He also decided to stick around to protect Kyrie, presumably because no god was going to do it.
The necklace Nero bought for Kyrie isn't very expensive. He wanted to thank her for taking care of him and congratulate her on getting to be the soloist at the ceremony.
"The Buddhism of the Pope on the stage continues." That line cracked me up. I assume it just means that Sanctus kept going with his sermon.
Dante shoots Sanctus, everyone panics. Nero doesn't worry about Kyrie dropping her gift since he can just buy her another one if she wants.
Nero's surprised by how fast Dante wrecks the knights since they're trained to fight demons. He mentions that 'many demons have human forms.' He didn't even stop to think before drop kicking Dante. He just wanted to save Kyrie.
When they end up on top of the statue of Sparda, Nero realizes that Dante is way stronger than he is even though Nero is far stronger than a normal person.
There's some surprise from Nero when Dante doesn't care that Credo and Kyrie escape, and he wonders if the 'murderer' has some kind of conscience after all. But he also doesn't care. Dante is clearly amused by this whole thing.
Nero's got an 'auto-loader' for Blue Rose because he has to load two types of ammo.
Nero doesn't use his right arm at first because he doesn't know when reinforcements will show up and doesn't want to have to explain it to them.
Dante doesn't seem to know what to make of Nero's arm at first? He asks if there is 'titanium inside.' Which is weird. Not sure if that's a translation thing or not.
Nero's right hand might actually be stronger than Dante. When Dante goes to staff him and Nero catches Rebellion, Dante can't quite pull away (though there's no indication of how hard he was trying).
Dante says "You too?" when Nero goes to throw the statue's sword at him, and Nero is confused. Dante also says "No, you don't have the smell of garbage," which I assume means he can tell that Nero isn't one of the artificial demons like the other knights.
Ooof. Nero thinks that he's killed humans possessed by demons but he's never killed a living person before. He can't really tell what Dante is, but he's gonna kill him. There's a weird line about how 'some fierce part of my heart awakened' and that he 'must kill this man, just like he is my old enemy.'
Nero isn't thinking clearly when he nails Dante to the statue and is a bit freaked out by his own reaction.
Nero's reaction to Dante surviving being impaled: 'This is a very outrageous guy.' Hah!
There's more made out of Dante saying that he and Nero are the same in the book. Dante out says "I am not human, are you not the same?" and Nero replies "I am… human," but he hides his arm and is shaken up by the question.
Dante still yeets out through the ceiling, but he calls Nero "little devil" when he leaves. It's kinda cute.
Nero's never met a demon that can understand human language. Evidently it's mainly the powerful ones who can. He worries that he might be a demon after all. The reinforcements show up before he can go check out the dead Order knights to confirm that they're not human. He wonders if he just imagined it, but knows that asking questions won't get him anything.
Switch to Dante POV. Sparda told his boys stories when they were little, though it seems like he left when they were still too young to really grasp everything or to think it was weird that their father was a demon. A lot of the stories of Sparda are considered just fairy tales and legends, so it's hard to piece together what he was really up to for those 2000 years before he met Eva.
The wording is strange, but Dante seems to realize that Vergil likely came to Fortuna to investigate legends of Sparda. After thinking it over, he laughs off the thought that Nero could be Vergil's kid.
Trish is 'very concerned about punctuality' and Dante has to go to the castle to meet her.
Back to Nero: He wants to go back to the dormitory and rest (what a mood), but Credo wants him to chase down Dante. Nero actually thinks he's not sure he can do it.
There's someone named Claude who's Durandl Nero was using? It just references "Claude's Durandl' being a very good sword.
Fortuna is surrounded by a solid wall, and there is only one exit by land. It's in the opposite direction of the Opera House and… the Fortuna duna? (Maybe the docks?) The Order keeps an eye on the ships in the port, though, so Dante can't escape that way.
Awww, he thinks the necklace suits Kyrie.
Demons attack the courtyard outside of the Opera house. Demons in Fortuna aren't rare, but having so many is. Also Nero has never seen them in the center of the city before in his 'few years as a knight.' Nero wonders if Dante is responsible. The plan is to take the citizens to HQ to keep them safe. (I get the feeling that the layout of the island is not so spread out as it is in the game. Either that or headquarters is actually a mistranslation.)
Nero mentally gushes about how great Kyrie is, that she'd even protect someone who treated her poorly. The boy is totally smitten. More very Vergil type thoughts: 'compassion without power can't change anything.' He decides he will be strong so that Kyrie's compassion isn't wasted. (Awww).
Nero deliberately breaks the archway to keep the demons from getting to the people. He ends up having to take the long way to get to HQ because the road is blocked
Stage 04 (Sanctus' resurrection and Berial)
'The room on the uppermost corner of the Magic Swords Corps' is Sanctus' bedroom. I'm assuming this is in the HQ building since this scene analogous to the one in the game where Sanctus is resurrected in the 'Ascension Chamber.'
Hahaha! Sanctus refers to Dante as an "awful guy." Okay, he apparently knew that Dante might come after him, but didn't expect him to drop into the middle of a big ceremony. He's also annoyed that he was killed in front of all the believers.
Agnus and Credo clearly don't like each other. Credo deliberately says some things to piss him off and Agnus absolutely takes the bait.
There's some strange wording, but my interpretation is: Credo partly sent Nero after Dante to make the kid look good. He knows that Nero isn't respected by the Order, but Credo thinks Nero is very strong. There's a comment about the Ascension Ceremony -- which Credo is convinced Nero could survive despite the low success rate (it says only 10 people survived, but that doesn't seem right). Evidently Credo wants to help Nero get in everyone's good graces to prepare him for the ceremony (Credo! Wut r u doin'?!)
Also Credo doesn't think there's any point in reasoning with Agnus. He really doesn't like him. Sanctus has to be the adult. He has some good skills in that, having to get all the different personalities in the Order to work with each other.
Agnus is a giant Sanctus fanboy. He's also easily excitable, which both Sanctus and Credo comment on.
Back to Nero: Lots o' demons in the city. He's very confused. Certain places are easier to open a Hell Gate than others. The translation is confusing here, saying it's easy to open a 'cave' in the area around 'Fodu.' I'm assuming that it means you can open portals to the Underworld easily on Fortuna?
Nero is pretty sure Rebellion is a powerful Devil Arm since he felt something in his Devil Bringer when he touched it.
Fortuna Castle was built up in the mountain because the people of Fortuna didn't want to destroy the environment. They do a lot to try to preserve the state of the island as close to how it was when Sparda was there. Nero thinks Sparda wouldn't care if they made their lives more convenient by modernizing things. (Pretty sure he's right.)
They refer to the big Hell Gate in the city as 'the monument.' Nero is surprised to find one in the Ferrum Hills.
Nero can tell how strong a demon is by how much his Devil Bringer hurts.
Hahaha! He thinks that Berial's sword is 'a little pitiful.' There's actually a nice illustration of Nero facing down Berial.
Nero seems convinced that Dante is a demon when he hears Berial also speak in a human language. There's a weird phrase: 'a lovely type of chat in the demonic race.' I'm not sure what that means.
Nero doesn't like heat. He's also annoyed (?) that Berial just ignored him because he's a human. He also calls Berial old. Also, oh snap, he quickly realizes that Berial is no threat to him, though at first he's a little worried. Nero thinks Berial is weaksauce compared to fighting with Dante. Berial also calls Nero "little devil."
Berial is surprised by Blue Rose. He's never seen a gun before. Nero's ticked that Berial has stronger fire than Red Queen.
Nero has been avoiding thinking about his arm too much, but fighting Berial makes him realize that his power is definitely like a demon's. Berial demands to know if Nero is human or not, and Nero's response is basically "I'm a special case." After Nero beats him up, Berial says he's sure that Nero is a devil, though Nero now denies it.
Berial gives him a weird look and says "Neither a demon nor a human being… that's it. You are like him." And then yeets into the Hell Gate because he knows he can't beat Nero without a refresh.
Nero apparently tries to destroy the Hell Gate but can't. He decides to move on, and wonders if the 'him' Berial was talking about is the man in red -- Dante.
Stage 05 (Fortuna Castle and Bael)
Dante POV: He's running around the castle to find Trish. She didn't tell him where to meet, only when. He wonders if Sparda really lived in such a place because there are only normal human things lying around and not Devil Arms.
He pops by the library and grabs a book off the shelf (Nero in the game comments on Dante having been there), but can't read the language. He feels like someone is watching him and calls them out. It's Trish who didn't want to startle him because she looks different. Dante feels the library suits Trish because 'she has a strong desire for knowledge.' (Interesting.) She doesn't actually show her Gloria disguise to him here.
Trish tells him where Yamato is. Dante wants it back because it's a memento of both his father and brother. There's a nice illustration of Dante and Trish.
They decide to deal with the Order before grabbing the sword since it's broken and they can't use it. Dante decides to poke around the castle a bit more, though Trish correctly guesses he's looking for anything that might have belonged to his dad.
Back to Nero: It seems like Nero hasn't been up to Lamina Peak (It's also called the Holy Mountain) before. He thinks the snow might be normal, but isn't sure. Tourists are rare, but the Castle is a big draw.
So the complicated route to get to the castle might have been to make it hard for enemies to get there in the Middle Ages. But he says the bridge is 2000 years old in the next sentence, so… Not really the Middle Ages.
Nero is actually pleased the bridge gets broken because it gives him a shortcut he wouldn't have thought of otherwise. Fights the Frosts, thinks they can't be the cause of the snow because they're not that kind of demon.
Nero is sure Gloria isn't from Fortuna, and he definitely notices the saucy clothing. Fortuna ladies don't dress like that. He mainly wants to know who she is. He has no idea why his Devil Bringer is still hurting after the demons are defeated, and wonders if that means the woman is a demon.
He hides his Devil Bringer from her -- which is why he doesn't shake her hand. She knows who he is, which means she's a knight, so he assumes that his arm is reacting to other demons nearby.
Gloria lists his nicknames: "'The bad bird to get along with', the arrogant atheist''
He's not surprised.
Ah, he turns away when she puts the knife away because he's being a bit polite and kinda doesn't want to get flashed.
Oh, he HAS been to the Castle, but he can't remember when. It was at least 3 years ago, before he was a knight. He doesn't like the place because of the 'damp air.'
He thinks maybe Dante came here to steal art (hah!).
Nero can't completely read the book Dante was looking at either. He knows enough to pick out that it's about demons, though, and he thinks that it might help him understand what Dante is after.
He's never seen the Bianco Angelos before, and figures it has to be a new weapon of the Order. Nero seems to think the guy in the armor is just a jerk messing with him.
Nero isn't even slightly tempted by Bael's sexy ladies -- the translation uses the word 'goblins' for them. Like Dante says in the game, Bael smells pretty bad. Also Nero can barely understand what Bael is saying, his human is so garbled. Bael also calls Nero "little devil" when he dies.
