Frozen has entered a new era with two new princesses, a new prince, and a little makeover. Arendelle looks a little different, but in the best way.
Changes:
• True Love is gone, but after seeing the show without it, I understand why they cut it. I LOVE True Love and I loved that moment for Anna but it really does kind of drag the ending of the show down (from a pacing perspective). In place of True Love, they’ve added a reprise of What Do You Know About Love leading into the scene before Hans arrives and then added in a reprise of Hans of the Southern Isles as Hans reveals his true colors. As Anna is left fo freeze, the young Elsa and Anna run through the scene as Anna looks on before Olaf arrives.
• I Can’t Lose You - We NEEDED this song. I think Frozen as a franchise needed this song and I’m so glad it exists now in all forms of Frozen The Musical. We needed a moment where Anna and Elsa are able to get a glimpse of each other from behind the doors and walls. We needed them to really connect in song (in a stronger sense than First Time In Forever (Reprise) allowed). The song is beautiful and Ciara and McKenzie did such a wonderful job with it.
• The Death of the King and Queen: After the King and Queen bid young Anna and Elsa farewell, they now are shown standing up stage surrounded by the ensemble who are rocking the boat back and forth (it’s a similar vibe to Colder by The Minute). Behind them is a set piece that shows the choppy waves and water. The ensemble still lifts the King and Queen up and carries them off with the Bishop and the two young princesses walking forward through the ensemble.
• They cut a few minutes off of Hygge (mostly the extended dance break, the random people coming into Oaken’s and entering the sauna). The number still felt the same and I know I’m one of the few, but I love Hygge and think it’s a ton of fun.
• Some dialogue changes that make things a little clearer and if you didn’t know how a scene was before you wouldn’t notice the difference. They did add the Samantha joke to In Summer, but that is probably the most noticeable book addition.
• What Do You Know About Love and the reprise of Hans of The Southern Isles now have more of a button (or final moment) which I think both songs needed a more pronounced ending.
Unlike the Mean Girls tour and eventual Broadway changes, the changes made to Frozen from the national tour to Broadway are good and improve the show as a whole.
Ciara - Her Elsa is wonderful. Her voice sounds incredible singing the score and she connects so beautifully to Elsa. Her Dangerous to Dream and watching her walk around through the scene as the ensemble bows and her observing Anna was just so good. I can’t wait to see her again and begin picking up on the smaller things she brings to the role, but she’s slaying it.
McKenzie - She’s absolutely adorable and brings the sassy and spunky Anna we know and love to the forefront plus with the added I Can’t Lose You she shows us more of Anna’s feelings of having been shut out by Elsa. Her voice is wonderful and she sounds a little like Kristen Bell. Her chemistry with Ryan and Jacob (my Kristoff understudy king) was great. She’s just so charming and adorable that you can’t help but love her Anna.
McKenzie and Ciara have incredible chemistry and truly that’s the most important thing in Frozen is how Anna and Elsa connect. Their voices blend so beautifully together in I Can’t Lose You and their little moments like mocking the Duke during the coronation ball were so good.
Ryan - I knew from the minute Ryan was announced that he’d be perfect for this role and he is. He plays the goofy charming aspect of Hans so well and he and McKenzie are adorable together during Love Is An Open Door. The reveal in Act 2 was so good and he does an evil laugh that was perfect. (Shout out to former Hans understudy Zach Hess and his evil queen laugh after the reveal). A few moments of the reveal felt a little JD-like (or as I said to Janiene - the JD jumped out) but it works.
Shout out to my Kristoff understudy king, Jacob Smith. I’ve seen Jacob twice in the last two weeks - he closed out my Frozen 1.0 era when I went to see Patti (and Caissie, but I ended up seeing the wonderful Alyssa Fox again) one last time and he’s ushered me into my Frozen 2.0 era. His Kristoff is so good and his voice is beautiful. His Kristoff’s Lullaby breaks my heart and he and McKenzie were adorable together during What Do You Know About Love and Fixer Upper. If you ever get to see him on as Kristoff - you’re in for a great show.
Austin Lesch was on as Olaf and he was very energetic and fun to watch. I had seen Austin as the Duke while back and really liked him as well. He did a great job with In Summer and was just really funny.
Arendelle has some brand new royals who are wonderful and a new look. I can’t wait to get to see the show again to soak in Frozen’s new era and cast members.
