Chimney sighed. “I get it. Really, I do. But the others will come around eventually… Hopefully.”
“Come around? With a captain like Gerrard?” Hen scoffed, “probably not. I know choosing this profession was gonna be a challenge but… even after everything I’m doing, they don’t acknowledge me. Sal, Tommy, Gerrard… no matter what I do, it’s not enough! And I know, it was hard for you, too, but you’re still a man. And you had Eli. I’m a woman, a black woman at that, and a lesbian. I’ll always have to work two or three times as hard as people like Deluca, just to get a fraction of the recognition!”
---
Hen is sick of some of her team treating her like she's less than. At some point they do realize that maybe, just maybe, they were in the wrong for doing that.
@911bingo @febuwhump @henwilsonweek @badthingshappenbingo
I hope I'm doing all of these events justice :) (I'm a little early for the febuwhump prompt, sue me :S)

Prompts
Here are the prompts for Hen Wilson Week 2025. There's three prompts per day, all following a certain theme.
You can create something for any of these prompts or combine them if that's what you want (e.g. you can choose to do something for "doctor" for day one, or you can combine "doctor" with the quote prompt "Today, my life finally came into focus.").
If you want to write something for the general theme (e.g. "Passion" for day one), but you don't want to do anything with the prompts under that theme, that's okay too!
If you want to do something for Hen Wilson Week, but you aren't really inspired by these prompts, that's okay! That's what day 7 is for — it's a free choice day. You can do whatever you want for day 7.

The You You Choose - 911 Severance AU
AN ~ a Henren Severance AU snapshot for @henwilsonweek2025 Day 6 - Family, my unconventional take on unconventional family!
my Hen Wilson Week 2025
read on AO3 (750wd)
The You You Choose
“Congratulations, Refiner Hen W. For your strong work ethic and persistent output, you have earned an 18 minute Visitation Event with your Outie's wife.”
“What?”
She frowns, but Doctor McGee only smiles.
“Your time starts now,” he advises. “Enjoy.”
The door closes, and she's alone in the foyer – such as it is; more of an entry hall to a slightly bigger room. It's not unlike the kitchenette. Maybe a little cosier, although the air in here is weird. The air in this whole place is always weird, these days.
Standing on the other side of the room, there's a woman standing just as awkwardly, Hen imagines, as she herself is. The woman has beautiful braids, and even more beautiful eyes, and Hen's breath catches in her throat for a second. This is her wife?
“Um. Hi,” she says. Because the Principles don't exactly address what to say to your wife you've never seen before. “I like your... bag.”
She tries to ignore the way the woman's hands are clutched around it.
Oh, thanks. It's not mine,” the woman says. “They... made me put my stuff in here.”
“Oh.”
The fish tank bubbles painfully loudly, for a long stretch.
“You really don't recognise me, do you?” the woman asks, tilting her head. She sounds... genuinely curious, even though she looks a little sad about it too. Hen can relate.
“I'm sorry. No.”
“I guess that is the point of all this,” she mutters. Smiling self-consciously, she offers a handshake and introduces herself. “I'm Karen. It's nice to meet you.”
“Hen,” Hen says - “-rietta, technically. But I prefer Hen.”
“You – I mean she – on the outside, my Hen does too.” Karen blushes and shakes her head. “God. Frank warned me this might be weird. I'm sorry. This is fascinating, but it's... a lot.”
“You're telling me. I didn't even know I was married until two minutes ago.” Hen blinks, and double takes. “Who's Frank?”
Doctor McGee's calm voice interrupts over the intercom before Karen can do more than open her mouth.
“Please refrain from sharing information which may be privileged or sensitive.”
“... Okay,” Karen murmurs slowly. She bites her lip about something, but then she shuffles into focus a manilla folder. “They, um – they mentioned you'd been asking about Denny.”
“Our son?”
“Yeah.” Karen says it like it's warming her heart, and breaking it at the same time as she hands over the folder. It must be like watching a relative with amnesia or something as Hen flicks through them; looking at her own son in the face, missing a little boy she's never known. He's sweet, and happy, and it looks like the two of them give him a good life. (It warms Hen's heart, at breaks it at the same time.)
“He's beautiful. How old is he?”
“He's just turned seven.”
“Seven.” Hen repeats it, awestruck. She draws a line down Denny's cheek as if she can reach out and touch his crown of frizzy curls. This little boy, in a weird way, is older than she is. Pre-dates her existence, in a way the innies are rarely faced with. It's no wonder they don't do these Visitation Event things often. This is too much.
Even more so, when Karen leans her head in closer and lowers her voice to explain:
“I- I was going to bring a picture from his birthday, but they wouldn't let me. Maybe because the other you was in it?”
Hen shrugs. She doesn't know the rules. Sometimes – Kier forgive her – she wonders if McGee and the others even do.
“Hen,” Karen presses, “are you safe here? Are you happy?”
Hen's heart beats into her throat, tying her tongue in a knot. She thinks about Eddie and Ms Kelley and Evan and the Elevator. She thinks about Karen, and Denny, and how if she opens her mouth right now she'll never, ever see them again.
The door slides open, and Doctor McGee wheels in with that unnerving smile of his.
“The Visitation Event has now concluded.”
“That hasn't been eighteen minutes,” Karen objects – but when she looks for a clock, there's none to be seen. Just the endless bubble and sway of the fish tank.
“I apologise,” says Doctor McGee, with a voice like syrup. “Refiner Hen W has been called back to her office for an emergency.”
He's all but herding Karen back toward the door.
“A data entry emergency?” Karen looks at Hen, for some kind of sign, but Hen is frozen. Tell her, tell her, tell her. Beg, scream, cry.
Don't get fired.
Hen scrapes together a reassuring smile.
“It's okay,” she promises. “See you tonight.”

9-1-1 REACTION
Guess who is two episodes behind on their reactions? This guy here! So, this week, you will be getting not one but two reactions for everyone’s favorite gay firefighter show … 9-1-1. Chile, this last episode snatched every single follicle out of my scalp. Honestly, how do they expect us to wait a whole week when so many lives are left hanging in the balance? But before I get to this week’s episode, let’s do some backtracking and talk about the episode from last week. This reaction is for the season 8, thirteenth episode “Invisible” which originally aired on April 3, 2025. The episode was written by Lyndsey Beaulieu and Taylor Wong and directed by Brenna Malloy. As always, there will be spoilers so if you haven’t seen the episode, stop reading right now and go watch. Okay, without further ado, let’s talk about the episode.
Tumblr media
To start things off, this is an Eddie and Hen-centric episode. I’ll start with Hen’s story and circle back around to Eddie who is still figuring things out in El Paso. In a nice homage to John Hughes’ Sixteen Candles, it’s Hen’s birthday and everyone (except for Athena and Eddie) has forgotten. We spend the episode watching Hen get more and more disheartened every time one of her family members and friends fail to mention that it’s her birthday. Even her own mother (played by the incomparable Marsha Warfield) has forgotten her only child’s special day and when called on it has the absolute nerve to cop an attitude. I felt bad for Hen this episode. I get maybe Bobby or Buck forgetting, but Karen and Chimney forgetting is pretty unforgivable if you ask me considering they’re the closest to her. I did find it funny that Eddie of all people remembered that it was Hen’s birthday when the man can’t even commit his own son’s social itinerary to memory.
“Archie, you’re not invisible. You’re making yourself disappear.” – Hen Wilson
Tumblr media
To make a bad thing worst, Hen is also forced to contend with the most pathetic man in the world. Hen first encounters Archie Mullin (played by Kevin L. Johnson) during an emergency involving a bed with a secret compartment underneath. Poor Archie has lost his job, his fiancée and his car all in less than 24 hours. During the second emergency involving an 18-wheeler, Hen implores Archie to stop making himself invisible and tells him it’s okay for him to take up space. Archie takes Hen’s advice a little too close to heart and finally snaps during a confrontation on a city bus. Archie stabs a guy and then takes the other passengers on the bus hostage. The 118 arrive on the scene along with Athena and Hen manages to talk Archie down. As they both get off the bus, Archie reaches in his pocket, which is perceived as a threat by the S.W.A.T. standing nearby. They fire at Archie, but Hen manages to push him out of the way before he is hit. Turns out, Archie was only trying to give Hen a keychain in the shape of her namesake. I must say, this plot does remind me of another episode from the spin-off show 9-1-1: Lone Star. In the episode “Impulse Control” we saw a character lose his cool twice before he finally snapped and killed a drunk driver. This episode followed the same formula but I’m okay with it because I think it worked for this particular story.
Tumblr media
After a disastrous day at work, Hen sits down to a belated birthday dinner cooked by Bobby.  She forgives Karen and the others for forgetting her birthday. I did think it was funny that the only one who got punished for missing her big day was Buck who must atone for his actions by being Hen and Karen’s personal handyman. Overall, I loved this plot. I love it when Hen is the focus because Aisha Hinds puts 100% into whatever she’s doing on camera. I also love it when we get to learn new information about a character. Apparently, Hen’s birthday is in early April which makes her an Aries. Also, it was good to see her mom again on the show even if she did irk me. I also love that Hen did get celebrated at the end. She deserves to be celebrated because Hen is the MVP of this show.
Tumblr media
Now let’s talk about our other plot of the episode. Eddie is still adjusting to being back in El Paso and is more determined than ever to get Christopher back. He enlists Buck to help him out with dinner via FaceTime but has to cut the call short when his parents and Christopher arrive. They’ve brought Chinese food which is super disappointing for Eddie since he’d planned to serve them dinner. What bothered me most about this episode is that Eddie’s parents (played by George DelHoyo and Paula Marshall) seem oblivious to his feelings. At times it feels accidental and other times it feels intentional. When it comes to Eddie and his parents, I can see where either party is coming from. Eddie believes he’s atoned for his sins which caused Christopher to leave in the first place but for Ramón and Helena Diaz, this isn’t the first time they’ve seen their son screw up. One thing that annoys me about the fandom is how forgiving and forgetful they are when it comes to Eddie. They often gloss over the fact that Eddie signed up for another tour of duty right after Christopher was born, meaning Shannon was left at home, alone, with a newborn with CP. And just in case you have trouble reading between the lines, Eddie abandoned his wife and kid under the guise of fighting for his country. Meanwhile, Shannon gets crucified by the fandom for leaving Eddie to raise Christopher alone. Flash-forward to season 3 when Eddie decided to join a fight club because he was incapable of dealing with his own emotions in a healthy way. Eddie almost killed a man which could’ve resulted in him losing his job and his son. Then there’s the whole cheating on his girlfriend with his dead wife’s doppelganger situation that resulted in Christopher peacing out and calling his grandparents. What I’m trying to say is that Eddie has screwed up many times and presumably his parents have stood by and watched him make these mistakes. I’m not saying that Ramón and Helena are right to take Christopher away from Eddie. What I’m saying is that I can somewhat understand why they’re a bit untrusting of their son’s ability to raise their grandson.
“So, go. Nobody can stop you. You know, dad up.” – Evan Buckley
Tumblr media
Since the theme of this episode is being forgetful, Eddie is also being forgetful. He forgets that Christopher has a chess tournament in Lubbock on the same day he plans to take Christopher to see the Mavericks. He learns that Ramón will be accompanying Christopher to the tournament and when he asks if he can tag-along, he is told there is no room for him. Ouch! I must say, Ramón can be a bit of a dick at times but it’s actually Helena who’s the proverbial snake in the grass. She’s so passive-aggressive and condescending when it comes to Eddie. I don’t like how she belittles his job as a Lyft driver especially since she was on his case last episode to get a job. Thankfully, Eddie gets some solid advice from Buck and Chimney. They encourage him to fight for Christopher, which he does by driving all the way to Lubbock to attend the chess tournament. When he gets there, he sees his dad coaching Christopher from the sidelines. Christopher throws up and Eddie intervenes to help him get cleaned up. Christopher reveals that he hates chess and that he’s only competing because Ramón loves it. This is an eye-opening moment for Eddie who experienced something similar in his own childhood. He and Christopher leave the tournament without Ramón and return to El Paso. Eddie then drives to his parents’ house and grabs all of Christopher’s things. When Helena confronts him about it, Eddie thanks her for being there for him when he needed her. Now it’s time for him to be there for Christopher.
Tumblr media
All in all, this was a good episode. It wasn’t as action-packed as some of the other episodes we’ve gotten this season, but I love when 9-1-1 slows things down a bit and gives us some character-driven episodes. I think the writers realize that things got really dark with the serial killer story, and they needed to lighten things up a bit before they deliver the one-two punch of 9-1-1: Contagion. This episode has me curious as to what will happen to Eddie now that he has Christopher back. I think it would be a poor decision to uproot Christopher again to move him back to Los Angeles but at the same time you can’t keep having this side adventures with Eddie back in Texas. Either Eddie leaves the show for good, or they find a way to bring him back to the 118. With that said, I’m sort of enjoying seeing Eddie on his own. I think he’s a better character apart from the others. Apart from Buck. If 9-1-1: Lone Star hadn’t got cancelled, I think he would’ve made a nice addition to the 126. I do wish they’d make up their minds about Eddie because the back and forth will get old after a while. Anyway, I think this is the shortest reaction I’ve done in a while, but I have a feeling my next reaction is going to a long one. Until next time …

As long as the other event allows it, and your work meets their requirements too, then of course!

Hen Wilson Week 2025
I've seen these character week events for a few other characters, but I couldn't find one for Hen. Since she's my favourite firefighter in the show, I figured I might as well host one.
With all the events going on in the fandom I figured it could take place in the week of the 10-16th of February 2025, and this would give everyone some time to plan. But first, I figured I should check for interest.

Firehouse 118
Hen Wilson Week 2025, Day 2: Firehouse 118
An insight into Hen’s mind as her the fire station goes from firehouse 118 where she works, to the 118 that is her home. Prompts by @henwilsonweek
On ao3.
Ships: Henren + Hen x Eva (minor)
Warnings: bigotry mention
~~~
Walking into work hasn’t always felt the same throughout the years. It has changed and evolved as the people inside the building did, and as she did.
Hen can still remember her first time walking through that door, excited and nervous. She’d still been dating Eva at the time and was eager to take this new step towards doing something that she loved with her girlfriend supporting that.
She also still vividly remembers how that feeling sank down into her stomach, morphing into dread the second she met any of her coworkers, not to mention her Captain.
After her first day, she understood why so many women quit and it’s not because they’re weaker and not built for the job like Gerrard suggests; it’s because firehouses seem to make it their job to make their lives hell. Well, at least it’s firehouse 118’s job.
However, Hen has always been stubborn and determined and she has never let anyone knock her down a peg. Never. So, she’s going to stay right there and finish her probationary year, stick with it for as long as she needs to rub it in Gerrard’s face that she outlasted him. That he couldn’t get to her like he so clearly wanted to.
Hen Wilson is not a doormat.
Hen Wilson does not let people walk over her.
Hen Wilson will prove each and every one of them wrong.
She will make firehouse 118 her home and plants herself there, refusing to be moved. She will bend with the wind and become the biggest tree there is, practically incapable of being knocked down.
Her determination was tested, by god was it tested. She withstood sexist comments and homophobic jokes, not to mention the racism, all the racism. She is pretty sure she wouldn’t have made it, especially not when everything with Eva went down, were it not for Howie.
Even with all her determination, every day there chipped at her and the blow Eva dealt would have made her topple over, had Howie not been there to catch her.
Together they were the two ‘diversity hires’ in Gerrard’s eyes, the sore upon his precious firehouse 118 that would have been the pinnacle of LAFD pride were it not for them. It did not matter that Howie was one of the best paramedics they had and Hen was picking everything up quicker than expected, didn’t matter that the two of them were damn good at their jobs.
So, they supported each other. It was the firehouse 118 crew and then Hen and Howie. Howie said that the person she replaced, Eli, had been pretty solid and a good dude, but that didn’t matter much now. There was no one else in their corner, so they just had each other’s back.
Howie catches her then. She sleeps on his couch for a week when going back to that apartment that she used to share with Eva gets to be too much and drives her to court to testify so she’s not alone. He is her only friend during that time and no matter how shit firehouse 118 was, she will always be glad it brought her Howie.
Furthermore, Howie brought her Karen.
He is a horrible friend for tricking her into a date and she thinks Karen is a massive bitch and why the fuck would he do that, of course. That is what she tells him. Because honestly that was rude of him to do. However, he also knows her well enough that he is right that she has a second date planned out. The dick.
Karen changes how she goes into work. Having her there, far removed from the shit from work (which she has gotten used to for the most part) is nice. Karen doesn’t know most of these people and has no trouble calling them all the assholes and bigoted pricks that they are. Getting to come home to her, makes it easier. Keeps her strong.
At some point, Karen suggests transferring. She has already completed her probie year, kept going after too. She proved Gerrard wrong. She did it.
But Hen doesn’t want to. She doesn’t want to abandon Howie, she doesn’t want to leave firehouse 118 that has become her home, however shitty it is. It’s her house and she’ll stay there. She can take the shit, she has seen all these men embarrass themselves, she doesn’t give a shit about their opinions of her.
Besides, she has even gained some respect from a few of them. Not enough to stop the bigoted jokes, but enough that they don’t snub her. She doesn’t want to start from the ground up and have to rebuild all she gained here at another firehouse that probably sucks as much as this one. It’s a LAFD wide problem, not a firehouse 118 problem.
So, she stays and goes into work and enjoys it. She likes the work, she can stand her coworkers and she has a beautiful girlfriend waiting for her at home.
Denny changes everything again.
Not just because all she has built with Karen nearly comes crumbling down as Eva comes wrecking balling back into her life, but also because when the dust settles, she has a family. Even back when things with Eva seemed to be going well and they were dreaming of a future together with her working pharmaceuticals, a family like this seemed unthinkable, but now she has it.
Work became more than a thing she did because she loved it, it became a way to bring home money to take care of her family, to buy Denny things he wanted and needed, then later a job that Denny was so proud his mama had.
Back in the Academy, everyone had pushed the brotherhood (which sexist first off) that working at a firehouse provided. How you had to rely on your fellow firefighters to get you through the emergencies you face. Hen doesn’t buy that anymore, firehouse 118 holds her coworkers and one friend, home holds her family. She doesn’t need to feel brotherhood with these people.
And for a while, she lived like that.
However, maybe she shouldn’t have completely disregarded that brotherhood, still iew though, and it was probably primarily Chimney, because one day she comes into work to find Gerrard getting removed from his function due to an accumulation of complaints against his conduct.
Firehouse 118 changes again. It’s not something she expects. Call her cynical if you must, but she doesn’t think Mr. Minnesota, older white man will be any different.
She is pleasantly surprised when Captain Nash – call me Bobby – comes in and doesn’t take any of the bigoted crap, instantly respecting her in her profession and moving Sal when he doesn’t want to listen and throws off their ability to work together.
Bobby is the breath of fresh air firehouse 118 needed. He might be distant on a personal level and prefer to just be professional, but he runs the house better than Gerrard ever had. Team morale goes up and bigotry shrinks. The firehouse starts to feel like a home.
Beyond leading fairly and competently, Bobby also knows how to pick recruits. Buck is a great addition, getting Bobby to open up to them as time goes on, pulling their little ragtag crew into some semblance of a family.
That family only grows as Eddie joins them, then Maddie too, while Athena – a friend Hen has already appreciated before – also becomes a part of the 118.
Going into work isn’t just going into work anymore. It’s not just a job that Denny thinks is cool where she can shoot the shit with Chimney and semi-ignore her other coworkers, before bringing money home to her actual family. Work has changed from to going from home to work, to from home to her second home to hang out with the rest of her family.
It’s the best change that has happened to her in a long time. To hold a large family in her heart and feel truly at home at work. To be respected and appreciated. To have the 118 mean something special, not just a number in the LAFD organizational system.
Therefore, when after nearly a decade of peace and good riddance Gerrard comes flouncing back into the place like he owns it, like he can just come back and make her life hell again, she feels her hackles rise and her anger burn.
She is no longer trying to outlast him, she did that ages ago. She has nothing to prove to this man. She does not have to take it defiantly. She does not have to watch him ruin the family that Bobby so carefully built for them, even if he hadn’t noticed it at the time.
Sometimes you don’t know how much you need a breath of fresh air, until you taste it, and Bobby was her breath of fresh air. She would lay herself on the wire for him. He has earned her respect and affection. She is ride or die for him.
So, she looks at Gerrard’s smug face and thinks: ‘I’m not going anywhere.’
Hen might have to move more carefully than she otherwise would have with the whole business with Counsel Woman Ortiz, but she isn’t going to let Gerrard take the 118 from her. It’s hers now. She is Captain when Bobby is unavailable and she is not letting Gerrard just waltz back into her home.
~~
A/N:
I know the 9-1-1 timeline has never made sense for a singular day in its existence, but the Hen Begins timeline is truly whack. Because Bobby has been there for 18 months when Buck gets there and Denny is like 8 in season 1, maybe 7, and Hen was still dating Eva when she went to the Academy, who has to go through a whole pregnancy at that point still. So Hen has been working under Gerrard for like 6 to 7 years minimum. It took that long for all the complaints to pile up and Gerrard to be moved? I’m not saying I don’t believe that, because bureaucracy can suck and complaints of bigotry aren’t always taken seriously, but also wtf?
Love
Hen Wilson week 2025, Day 5: Love
Hen is getting married today. Hen is marrying Karen today. Her mom isn’t there for it though, however a pep tall from Chimney and getting to see Karen walk down the aisle will make her forget about all of that. Prompts by @henwilsonweek
On ao3.
Ships: Henren
Warnings: referenced homophobia
~~~
“My mom. She’s not here,” Hen can hear the upset in her own voice as tells Chimney that, having peered into the venue, before having to go out there.
When she looks back at Chimney – about to be her best man – her own heartbreak is reflected in his eyes, along with anger she cannot bring herself to feel right now. All she can think about is how she is going to marry the love of her life and her mom isn’t there. Her mom still disagrees with her lifestyle choices.
“Hey,” Chimney gets her attention back on him, “that doesn’t matter. Okay. It sucks. Fucking hell that fucking sucks, yeah. But it’s your wedding, it’s Karen’s wedding. You’re not marrying your mom, you’re marrying Karen and she’s going to stick to her planning, you know that.”
Hen lets out a chuckle that is slightly too wet for her taste. “Yeah,” she sniffled. “Thank god I’m not marrying my mom, that would be weird.”
“I would have stopped you,” Chimney assures her as if she seriously means it.
She sends him a look and he just grins back, making her realize that had been the point as he snapped her out of her spiral. “Thanks.”
“Course,” Chimney replies easily. “Today is about you two, if your mom is stupid, then that’s her problem, okay. You’ve dreamed about marrying Karen for years now. You finally can. That’s what today is about. About the family the two of you are making.”
“Yeah. Yeah,” Hen says, pep talking herself almost. “This is my dream. I want this. Screw her for not being there.”
“Hell yeah, that’s the spirit!” Chimney cheers. “Now, are we ready to get out there?”
“We are,” Hen smiles. She’ll always be grateful for Chimney, for having him as her friend and in her corner. He is one of the most important people in her life. He is her family. Chimney is here. That’s more important.
She takes a deep breath and calms her own nerves as she waits for Chimney and Maria – an old college friend from Karen’s who is her maid of honor – to walk to the front to receive them, or whatever you wanted to call it.
Hen was involved in the wedding planning, of course she’d been, but Karen is the one who wielded the spreadsheets and they’d gone for not super formal and mostly vibes of what a wedding is usually like than very strictly keeping to it, so Hen didn’t brush up on her wedding terminology.
…Maybe that’s why her mom wasn’t there? Because it was even more abnormal than just them being lesbians?
No.
She shakes the thought off. She isn’t going to let the second best day – first being the day they got Denny – be ruined by her mom. She isn’t going to let this get to her. She refuses.
Fortunately, she doesn’t have long to spiral again, because now it’s her turn to walk the aisle. Jitters starting up again as she takes her first step, then they melt away immediately.
The people that are there, are people she knows and loves. Chimney is at the front, smiling at her encouragingly, Athena too. She doesn’t need to be nervous here. All these people are here to celebrate her and Karen. Their union. Their love.
A big smile comes over her face and she confidently walks down, cheeks hurting, but unable to stop herself and not wanting too either. The smile falters slightly at the sight of the empty chair in the front row, but is quickly shoved aside by Chimney’s matching big grin as he claps her on the back, while she takes her place.
Nerves creep in again, but the good kind, as all eyes turn back on the door, waiting for it to open again and Karen to come out. Hen hasn’t seen her dress yet, but she has seen the pinterest board. Still, the real deal will be different.
May and Harry appear with little baskets of rainbow confetti. They’re both in their Sunday best and it’s clear that May takes her task a lot more seriously, the little concentrated furrow between her brows adorable on the eleven year old, while Harry just seems delighted to be throwing shit.
When they’ve joined their father in the first row, the doors open again. Karen appearing looking like a breath taking angel, haloed in light, though Chimney will probably say that’s her rose-tinted glasses speaking.
Karen’s dad is giving her away – which only hurts a little bit – but he practically disappears in how Karen shines. She had gotten goddess braids done, which are cascading down her shoulders, her princess dress swooshing with every step.
Hen doesn’t think she breathes for the entirety of Karen’s walk down the aisle.
God, she is so fucking gay for this woman. She loves her so much. She can’t believe she gets to marry her, that she can do that now. Legally. She’s crying at this point, but she doesn’t even care.
That happiness wilts a little once Karen passes the empty chair in the front, but Hen refuses to let her mom ruin this for her. Refuses to let her special day be overshadowed by something like this.
Still, Karen must notice something, because she quirks her brow at her when she gets to Hen. Her own eyes are also teary, but she’s managing to keep it dry for now. Hen gives a quick glance to the chair where her mom was supposed to sit and Karen sees it too. Sympathy flashes across her face and she squeezes Hen’s hand. That is worth a thousand Chimney pep talks (no offense) and Hen manages a big smile in return. She can put that aside now that Karen is here.
And she can especially put it aside when Denny comes down the aisle, proudly carrying their rings. He wanted to be best man, but sadly you have to be old enough to sign as a witness, so he is their ring bearer instead.
He looks absolutely adorable with his little chest puffed out and his curls framing his face. Some days Hen can barely believe he’s five already. It seems like time is slipping through her fingers and he was just a baby yesterday. However, she can also not be more happy to see him grow up.
“Here you go, mommy and mama,” he tells them with a big smile, holding out the rings for them.
“Thank you, honey,” Karen smiles back at him, carding a hand through his hair as she takes the ring she needs from him.
Hen is completely washed away by the tidal wave of love that crashes over her at the sight, nearly fumbling it when she takes one of the rings as well. Fuck, she is the luckiest woman on the planet.
Denny stands with Athena between them, they weren’t going to do this without him. They’re a family, the three of them together. Today they celebrate the union between her and Karen, but their relationship is defined in so many ways too by how they’re raising Denny together. It’d feel wrong to not incorporate him properly.
With him in place, it’s time for their vows. Athena first introduces Hen to speak, who takes a deep breath, before starting: “Karen. When I drove home after our first date, I called Chimney saying ‘how dare you set me with someone so arrogant and up tight.’ Of course, he listened to me… and then he proceeded to ask me when our next date would be. He knows me so well. Because I was gone for you then. From the moment you sat down across from me, challenging me to prove I was worth your time, I was down bad and I never wanted to let you go.”
People laugh and Karen looks a little embarrassed at the reminder of how she acted those first few minutes of their date, but she is beaming too.
“And I am so glad that I never let you go,” Hen continues, her voice a little softer, more awed and fragile. “There have been ups and downs, but you’re still here. We’re still here. We’re here together with the family wemade. We did that. And I sometimes can’t believe how lucky I am.”
Karen gives her the most pleased smile, though it’s a little bashful around the edges. There is also pride shining in her eyes. Pride at what they’ve built together.
“You are so driven and ambitious and I love watching you put your focus and your all in everything that you do. I admire that so much about you. I am so proud of all you have done. And I feel so honored that you chose me and Denny to be one of the things you give your energy and time to.”
Hen goes on: “I love you with all my heart. I love the way you smile. I love the way your eyes light up when you talk science. I love the way you always give in and read Denny one more bedtime story. I love the way you grumble when it’s your turn to do the dishes. I love the way you breathe, the way you exists, the way you move, the way you love. And I love that you’re letting me love you and call you mine for the rest of our lives.”
At that point, Karen is crying as much as Hen is, both of them smiling through the tears, because there is so much love inside them that is just bursting out in that moment. Hen is happy she remembered everything, happy it all came out right, happy to be here today with Karen and Denny and Chimney and Athena and all their other friends.
And when Karen starts her vows, thoughts of that empty chair are far from her mind.
~~
A/N:
Honestly, I love mama Wilson and she is the only 118 parent that actually deserved her redemption arc and who actually put in the work, so don’t take this as bashing per se. Just that was kind of fucked that she missed her own daughter’s wedding.
Also this is just a blatant excuse to write a Henren wedding, but can you blame me? I love them so so so fucking much <333
