There's been a bunch of asks about various display type styles, lets hear about your opinions on fonts for body text!

Ooo good question. They're not as eye catching...but makes it all work yknow?

When I worked in publishing, I basically relied on Hoefler Text 99% of the time. It's just sweet and clean, nice round bodies and balanced x-heights... looks great on newsprint

For Sans... it's probably Whitney? or, not to be basic, Helvetica? Whitney is just a LITTLE quirky, it suits web really well but still has a bit of bookishness to it. The most subtle of angled terminals... And I'm kind of in to this recent wave of web brutalism that's all about committing to Helvetica and going absolutely bonkers about it... Hard choice!

Honestly I'm less picky about these individually. I prefer superfamilies and having a lot of options, and I'll look at the spacing to make sure I'm not ending up with a lot of weird rivers/widows/legibility issues... but otherwise it's just a matter of suiting the display.

Rationale of the Project

The typeface I choose is New Hero designed by Miles Newlynn. The type is a Sanserif font with 10 different styles from a small thin style (Hairline) to the bulky bold style (Super). The design of New Hero is very slick and clean like Helvetica or Minion Pro. The Sanserif and clean design produce a minimalistic feel to the typeface. This is the reason I choose this typeface due to how minimal the design is. The place I come from is Thailand and as an international student, I feel that minimalism is what relates to me the most. This relates to Thailand because currently, Thailand is undergoing a huge change to its culture with the implementation of modernism and technologies being recently popular in Thailand, a second-world country compared to New Zealand where these aspects are already present for some time. Therefore, I feel that using a New Hero, a Sanserif font with a clean minimal design relates to my identity and the place I come from the most.

Thus, for the Type Specimen booklet I decided to explore the uses of New Hero typeface with the incorporation of my Pepeha and my hometown at Thailand, Nonthaburi. This make the design of the booklet minimalistic and clean. The colour uses are B&W to show the link of it to the minimal and clean aesthetic. This shows the link to my Pepeha.

For the Kinetic Typography I decide to make the story about Thailand, specifically Nonthaburi. The piece is call Nonthaburi the city of Thailand. The story starts with a sun that melt the word Thai and form Land (Showing how hot Thailand is). Then it rain down to Chao Phraya River (Nonthaburi's main river) then it written at Nonthaburi. This story shows the origin of Chao Phraya river being created from a heavy rain that accumulate over time in Thailand. The design and colour scheme of the piece is kept relevant and consistent to the Type Specimen booklet design.

I find that overall researching type is more difficult than my initial thoughts. This is because how I often view typography as an everyday occurrence that I see throughout my life, via posters, magazines, or billboards. However, after conducting in-depth research on New Hero, I realises how complex typography really is.

The most successful part of the project is the research on New Hero type and the incorporation of it to my Pepeha. I feel that I did a good job incorporating New Hero to the minimal aspect of Thailand which link to my Pepeha.

The most challenging aspect of the project is using Adobe After Effect for the Kinetic Typography. Adobe After Effect is a program that I'm not familiar with and never use before. This make my knowledge of the program are little to none of how to create a kinetic typography clip. The problem also is that I was sick for most of the Kinetic Typography classes, thus making it for me, quite difficult to get a grasp of how to use After Effect. So to overcome this challenge I decide to conduct my own individual research of the program and eventually produce the outcome I desire.

Altogether I felt that this project did show the link to my Pepeha and the research typeface, New Hero. All of the project show the minimalistic and Thailand aspect I want to showcase. This theme was keep consistent and relevant to every project. Overall I feel satisfy with the outcome and enjoy every parts of developing this project.

hello, i ADORE the way you use and pair fonts. i was just wondering if you had any tips for using more than one font in an edit? (Such as mixing cursive and non-cursive, etc.) if you've answered something like this before, my apologies!

nonnie!! literally never apologize for asking me to scream about fonts; they live in my mind rent free. 💜i’ve mentioned a vague collection of fonts i like here, but i’ve been meaning to do a post on how to combine them for awhile so thanks for giving me an opening to do so! so, without further ado, a few tips & tricks.

1.  FIGURE OUT THE VIBES OF YOUR SET FIRST.

Like colours, fonts have a certain feeling/energy to them and should match the emotion you want your set to communicate. Cursive fonts tend to suggest a more gentle, relaxed, or fragile emotion; brush fonts convey a sense of movement, excitement, or freeness; heavy-weighted fonts have a sense of power, abruptness, or impact; and so on, and so on. For example:

 Although they’re both using the same kind of alignment, the combo on the left is far less in-your-face as the option on the right would’ve been. Using a handwritten font for the accent feels a bit more contemplative or personal, like an awed whisper; whereas the all-caps bold font is more like it’s coming to kick your door down in celebration. Either option works well enough as a font combo, but in terms of working together towards the theme, the left one matched what I wanted. So—always prioritize emotion in font choice, even if another option looks just as cool.

2.  STYLE YOUR OTHER FONT(S) AROUND THE ACCENT FONT.

With “the accent font” being the “fancy” one, in this case. It’s going to be the centerpiece of your set, so you don’t want to have picked a supporting font first only to discover it doesn’t actually go with your main font. I usually type the text in a placeholder font (like Helvetica or let’s be real, my faves Gill Sans or Futura), then figure out my accent font for the Main words, then go back and find a supporting font & weight that I like.

You also, like me, might just stick to 3-4 “basic” fonts and never change them, because it’s much simpler that way and also Futura is such a pretty font y’know?? 

3.  COMBINING FONTS IS ABOUT CONTRAST.

For fonts to work together, they have to contrast in (at least) two ways—in weight, in style, in size, or in colour. Similar to picking out an outfit, if a font is too similar to its neighbor it’ll clash, but they do still need to be living in roughly the same neighborhood or it won’t fly. For example:

Only two fonts are used in each set (and only one in the last one—the contrast is made through negative space rather than font type), and contrast comes through 1) size (note how the accent font is always bigger—I usually aim for about double), 2) style (block, handwritten, brush, sans serif vs. serif), and in the case of the bottom left one, 3) tracking (“bumps the needle” is the same font [gill sans] as “my heart” is; the difference is the distance between letters is set at like 1500 vs about 75).

While there’s plenty of contrast in the examples above, there’s also harmony—in the top left example, the Accent font for “My God Does” is a thick, rounded font, so the supporting/plain font is also fairly rounded and a medium weight. Compare that to the middle bottom set, where since “Wolf” is in a tall, thin font, “Leading” is also in a tall and thin font.

Without harmony, the fonts start warring against each other. Taking that last set as an example:

On the left, we have the original—“Wolf”/”Leading” pairs Onyx/Acumin Variable Concept (Extra Condensed)—and on the right, Gill Sans has replaced Acumin Variable as the secondary font. Because Gill Sans is so much rounder and bigger (this is despite my taking the pt size down by about 6), it reads as thicker. That added horizontal weight takes away from the very concentrated vertical weight of the Accent font, and therefore doesn’t work as smoothly.

You can get away with pairing rounded/thin letters or heavy/light letters, and in fact you should try it! Just make sure there’s a significant contrast between them, not just a minute one.

4.  TYPOGRAPHY NEEDS AN ANCHOR.

Once you’ve picked your fonts, there’s another problem: placement. One of the difficulties of text in a gif is that it can go anywhere, and so sometimes we get carried away with the arrangement. That’s where anchoring the text—placing it in alignment with something else—comes in. Let’s zoom in on two of the examples above.

While the arrangement is playful in both, the text doesn’t feels lost because even when it’s unusual, it’s still directly aligned with some part of another word. In the left example, “The,” “Wolf,” and “Wolves” are all aligned with their first letter to the left, whereas the word “Leading” is aligned to the right with its last letter matching the “S” in wolves. Thus, while it breaks up the left-alignment of the rest of the set, it still feels like it belongs because it’s attached on the other side. It doesn’t “break the box,” so your brain doesn’t get confused.

With the set on the right, a similar thing is at play. First, the alternating pairs are aligned either to the left or the right so it still reads as a unified rectangle (don’t break the box!), and second, each time the text switches sides it’s placed directly on the line below the last word. So even though they’re not aligned on the left or right, they are aligned from top-to-bottom. The negative space is also key to breaking up the text in a pleasing manner, as seen in this comparison:

The original version on the left creates a smooth river or “S” shape, with each line break also making sense for the rhythm of the sentence. The one on the right, however, breaks the text up uncomfortably, the lines are jagged and bump up against each other unpleasantly, and “the scratching” stretches far out into the negative space, tripping up the flow. When and where you chop up a text matters not only for how you read it, but also how you feel about it.

5.  A QUICK WORD OF WARNING.

Obviously no rule is a complete absolute, but I think this one holds up under most circumstances so here it goes: do not put two different fonts of the same genre in the same gif. If you have Cursive Font A already, you very likely won’t be able to successfully implement Cursive B right next to it without causing confusion (see rule 3 about contrast). You might be able to get away with two accent fonts (e.g., a nice cursive font + a thick impact font), but it’s a lot harder for the reasons mentioned above about clashing/warring for attention. Basically, make sure you’re adding, not subtracting, to the overall statement.

6.  PRACTICE!!

The best way to figure out what style works best for you is to just go mad with it. I’ve been doing typography work of one kind or another for about a decade and yet even looking at some of my sets that are just a few months old I’m surprised by how much my style has grown & expanded! The more you use it, the more you’ll find certain fonts, styles, and tricks to your liking, and seeing what other people do with their sets is a great way to expand your repertoire, too.

The world through Linda's eyes: A retrospective of Linda McCartney's life and photography In 1966, during a brief stint as a receptionist for Town and Country magazine, Linda Eastman snagged a press pass to a very exclusive promotional event for the Rolling Stones aboard a yacht on the Hudson River. Staff Member 1 : So do we remove it or not.

He (DrunkGuy) couldn’t move at all after that bad bender. He could vaguely feel his neck was in something and could barely feel his right arm. All he could do is hear disjointed conversations between whom he can only assume is the hospital staff. He could’ve sworn that he fell into a red river that smelled like blood and the glasses of drinks he had that night. 

Staff Member 2: Maybe we should wait, he’s not consenting and we can’t get a hold of his attorney, if he even has one.

He wonders if he should be dead by now given how much alcohol he had that night, about 20 or 30 if he could remember correctly. 

Staff Member 1  : sigh… I swear to god this guy is an animal, this is the third or fifth time this week he’s been admitted here. Hell, he was only discharged a few hours before. Maybe we should….

He then hears white static over powering his ears like he was really close a tv with the volume up. 

this is the way we talk

a synthetic voice said as he felt himself jolt awake 

DrunkGuy: Who’s there? What was that? What kinda shit do they have me on to be…

Then everything goes black again. He hears the voices of various people in his life.

“When are you going to act your age already? You’re in your twenties for God’s sake.”

“Are you doing this shit on purpose? Don’t drag us into your shit okey.”

“You do know that alcohol is a depressant right? This coping mechanism is going to turn into an addiction.”

“Why are you squandering your talent on something so dumb?!”

Synthetic Voice : You can be somebody new. You can prove all those who had doubted or belittled you wrong.

DrunkGuy: WHO SAID THAT?! What are you?

All the sudden he found himself in what looks like a mainframe of a computer with the only source of light coming from a bright orange pillar of light. 

Synthetic Voice : You can also get out of the rut you fond yourself in. And find companionship again.

DrunkGuy: Oh please, I’m not buying that for one minute. Also I don’t really need any body, I’m alone and I’m free.

There was a long pause of silence until he got to the source of light, it was something he didn’t really expect. 

DrunkGuy:  A skull mask? What is this shit? I already have on my huh…

DrunkGuy catches a glimpse of his real face in one of the mirrored walls. He then noticed that he was in the same clothes he had during that night. The most off-putting thing about the room was that he could feel that mask calling to him by a name in binary code no less. 

zero_one(hostless) : I am zero_one and you have the choice of either becoming one with me or returning back to your ordinary life if you managed to recover at all.

DrunkGuy: Recover? What the fuck happened?! gasp Holy fucking…

He sees himself in a hospital room with various medical equipment attached to him. He still had that white skull mask but it was partially obscured by bandages around his head. He also had a neck brace and a cast on his right arm. 

zero_one(hostless) : You fell down a flight of stares in the city streets. You would’ve certainly died if Helvetica didn’t intervene the way she did.

He sees a glimpse of a woman with a skull mask similar to his but half of it was inverted. She was grabbing on to his left arm while he was unconscious. 

zero_one(hostless) : Helvetica and one of my hosts (WIW Guy) drove you to the hospital soon after. “

He was left speechless, DrunkGuy thought he had a falling out with WIWGuy over something he could barely remember and now this woman named Helvetica (whom according to zero_one is a tombsona like they are and is apparently partially influenced by it’s host’s emotions.) Then something came to him.

DrunkGuy: … I don’t know if I’ll end up regretting it or not but… what the hell. You said something about being somebody new right?

zero_one(hostless) : Yes, to clarify you’ll become one with me and gain something you’ve be yarning for well over a year; a purpose. You wished to become a musical artist with a specialty of making mashups.

DrunkGuy: How… did you know that?

zero_one(hostless) : Well it’s happened before, at least to me. As a tombsona, I am not anchored to one linear timeline. I’ve encountered countless individuals of various nationalities, genders, and yes even species who seek greater understanding of the world around them. Helvetica’s current host in another timeline is one such person and so is your friend, WIW Guy.

This decision was something DrunkGuy couldn’t believe was even real. He wondered if it’s from the cocktail combination of the anesthetics and pain killers the hospital have him on or just the cocktails he got a little too creative with. He held the skull mask in his hands, it was jet black with some circuit lines pulsing orange to a unknown rhythm. DrunkGuy puts it on and feels his whole being being assimilated with zero_one. It felt like he had lived a thousand lives at once.

All the sudden he could see glimpses of a woman doctor in blue clasping her hands anxiously. She looks like she’s in the middle of a ritual of some kind.

A troubled teen in a green tee shirt running with what looks like a helmet and riot armor in his arms. It looks like he’s running in a heavy wooded area.

An astronaut with red markings reentering the atmosphere of another planet. It looked like Mars.

And what looks like a guy who’s hunched over with something magenta in his hands. The strange with was that his hands where very hairy and had long nails

And then everything turns black again as DrunkGuy hears someone or something sing

Has me feeling like a ghost 

Unknown Voice: This is going to be interesting to say the least. These Linked Souls.

 All the sudden that blackness was met with extreme panic as DrunkGuy felt his body start to change into something else. 

DrunkGuy : What’s happening to me?! Why do I feel like an…

THE ADVENTURE SERIES - WITNESS OF PERSPECTIVE

This is gonna be a weird post, but stick with it. This relates to some of the tasks and assessments we’ve been doing about perspective and how looking at things from a different perspective, physically and mentally can change how we look at things. It also links to the idea of communication because I think that we have this massive focus on looking at letters that are stringed together to form words, which are combined to make sentences. This analysis looks at how we can communicate rules and ideas through a different method.

This post will have a read more below as it will be a very long post and may not interest some people, but I thought I might brain dump my thoughts about these two things.

There is a video game called ‘The Witness’ by Jonathan Blow that I have played a couple of years ago and, after doing the ‘Hello, my question is...’ task and the ‘Architexture’ task, came back into my mind because the tasks reminded me of something.

In ‘The Witness’, you go around an island solving panels with line puzzles on them, consisting of drawing a line from a starting circle to the blinking exit.

This is all you have to do but it gets harder when the game starts introducing rules that you have to abide by. A great example is after you leave the starting area you encounter a puzzle with black and white squares as well as circles. Unless you’ve played the game, you won’t know what they mean.

The rules are explained through panels that are up the path from the puzzle. These teach you the rules behind the squares and circles. Once you complete these puzzles, you are urged to go back and solve that previous puzzle.

This is all done without text, or a voice over. Just panels and the human mind.

This is the first of many rules the game teaches you without telling you. The reason why I am talking about this is the way the game relates to the idea in the first lecture of a mutually understood rules or signs. This game tries (sometimes fails) to tell you the rules of the symbols so you can apply them later. This also breaks language barriers as well, because you don’t need to know a certain language to solve these puzzles, just the one the game taught you. This game helped me answer some of the questions I had outlined after the first lecture.

The next thing I will talk about is perspective.

The game has over 500+ panels to solve. There is one puzzle that changes the way you see things. You go up this mountain (which is where the final set of puzzles are) and there is a yellow panel to solve.

I solved it and thought that it looked a lot like the river. So I was curious. What would happen if I solved the river? That was when my perspective shifted dramatically.

This is when you start seeing things in a different perspective. You look at things differently in the game and start seeing more of these circles and lines everywhere.

This is the final idea of the post, which also relates to this course and looking at things differently. Learning about something new and being tasked to find it in the world so obsessively that you won’t be able to unsee it, such as seeing Helvetica everywhere, bad kerning practices, letters in the shadows of trees and dots connecting to lines, all links back to a change in perspective. 

Is it good to have a shift in perspective in design? I think yes. If you keep seeing things the same way you will end up doing the same thing for the rest of your life. If you change your perspective, things look different and you have an appreciation for different designs, and being open to such will make us all good designers.

Linking everything together in my essay about a video game and how it relates to this course, the idea of learning a unspoken language and a persons perspective helps to create the designers we should all aspire to be. All this, from a single puzzle.

As world turtle day comes to a close, we’d like to thank you for celebrating with us! There's lots of work to do to make sure we don’t lose these incredible creatures. They’ve survived what the dinosaurs didn’t, let’s not be what causes their demise!

Support plastic reduction when able!  There are various ways you can help fight the war on plastic. It starts at home. Make a pact to stop using single-use plastic. With zero-waste stores on the rise and plastic alternatives becoming more commonplace, it’s not that hard. One way is to give them a reusable shopping bag, straw or travel mug as a gift.  Do this but also remember that those with disabilities are not always able to avoid plastics. Able-bodied friends have to take charge.

Take part in (or organize your own) beach and river cleanups on a regular basis. Make it a fun event for any organization, school, and community group. Get out there and clean their habitat!

Support your local turtle and tortoise rescues any way you can! Here are some listings of rescues by state. Help the American Tortoise Rescue rebuild their hospital! Read more here! 

Support action against the illegal wildlife trade and stop poaching! Egg poaching is just one of the many ways the sea turtle population is at risk. In Nicaragua, poachers are taking a more barbaric approach to get what they want. Join over 165,686 people and sign and share the pledge to support efforts to put an end to this horrifying practice.

Encourage adoption or ensuring purchase from reputable breeders. Stop the illegal wildlife trade! Unfortunately, many of the turtles and tortoise found in pet stores are snatched from their homes in the wild and smuggled illegally into western countries to be sold as pets. These animals are smuggled in in the most horrifying conditions, with only half surviving being hidden in suitcases/piled in boxes/ and worse. This practice only continues because the demand is there. Adopt don’t buy! 

Share the importance of keeping wildlife wild, encourage proper research and care for those considering adopting a turtle or tortoise. Our shell friends are all too often whim purchases that end with their abandonment in already full rescues or death from incorrect care.
