The planning has started! There are 5 main municipalities we will visit: Swartland, Saldanha Bay, Bergrivier, Cederberg and Matzikama. Most of the communities we will visit are predominantly Afrikaans speaking. I had an internal struggle whether to write this blog in English or Afrikaans. Afrikaans feels more authentic to me, but unfortunately the last time I wrote more than a paragraph in Afrikaans, I was 18 years old, writing my final Afrikaans matric exam. Fast forward 10 years and I have lost a lot of confidence writing in the moedertaal. Maar hoekom moet ek op een taal besluit? Niks of niemand verhoed my om hier en daar bietjie Afrikaans inwerk nie, so ek sal.

My role is to help Eugin (Dr. Bornman, that is) to verify data published in a research report, namely "Community Profiles for Western Cape Marine Fisheries" by Catherine D Ward in September 2021. Dr Ward used data gathered during the census of 2011. A lot of time has passed since 2011, and Eugin's supervisor, Dr Astrid Jarre, has thus left this exciting project in his capable hands.

We begonnen onze pelgrimstocht met een voor ons inmiddels aangename klim van 20 km. We komen weinig toeristen tegen bij onze tocht naar het klooster van Rila. Je zag het klooster dan ook niet vanop een afstand. Na het verteren van de laatste bocht stond het klooster pal voor je.

Het klooster van Rila is het op één na grootste klooster in de Balkan en tevens Unesco werelderfgoed. Van de ooit 500 monniken blijven er nu nog een handvol over. Ooit waren er zo een 1000 slaapkamers voor pelgrims. Voor de toeristenrush konden we alles rustig aanschouwen. Gezien het toeristisch seizoen ook hier nog niet begonnen was stonden we weer voor een gesloten deur terwijl graag iets warm wilden drinken.

We wilden de hangende stortbui voorkomen maar Almut wilde absoluut de kloostertoren nog bezoeken. Daarvoor moet je eerst naar de andere kant van het klooster om een ticket aan te schaffen en daarna kreeg je je persoonlijke begeleider mee.

In de regen begonnen we aan de afdaling. Bij de eerst mogelijke pitstop draaiden we af. Dit bleek een smaakvol restaurant te zijn waar wij twee uur wachtten op droger weer - gevuld met lekkers zoals geroosterde auberginesalade.

Vanaf onze tafel hadden we zicht op een wild kolkende bergrivier die naar beneden donderde. Natuurgeweld puur.

Roll #2 “The Adventure Begins”

After a great nights sleep, we awoke refreshed and raring to go. A quick walk with the dogs on the local beach and then a drive through to Velddrif to have a look around and visit a local coffee shop for..well..coffee. 

The closest patch of sand to the house, it was our go to beach for the lack of crowds, relaxed wind (mostly) and for great photo opportunities.

Look to the left and you’ll see a beach walk that stretches all the way around the small bay.

Look to the right and you’ll see the edge of the pier with a fully operational harbour even further right.

A warehouse of some kind, whether it is currently being used or not is debatable. 

Im fascinated by shapes and lines in my photos, and so these towers were naturally great subject matter.

The R27 is one of the main roads that connects all the towns together, and it runs over the Bergrivier which sits alongside Velddrif.

Bokkoms are whole, salted and dried mullet and were readily available for sale all over the West Coast. Most notably along the small stretch of Bokkom Avenue. 

Bokkom Avenue is littered with a mixture of art studios, fish shops, general stores and even a craft coffee shop.

Mia, Luna and Jennette. Luna had injured her paws the day before and so we had to carry her around wherever the ground was hot.

Our initial mission was for the coffee shop, only to discover it was closed that day. So we drove back into St Helena to meet up with the rest of the family for lunch.

St Helena Bay Harbour is fully operational and not only is home to many of the fishing boats, but also to a rad seafood restaurant Oppikaai. 

Limited shade for 35 degree weather.

No swimming allowed. The water is freezing anyway so that's not really a problem for us Eastern Capers.

Fresh fish is the staple diet for any and all people living in the area.

If you're spending more time on your #board than on your #bike - way more, in my case - you're going to seriously suffer when you tackle the #Tulbagh #BoneTrail, a tough old bugger of a crank into those high-and-righteous #witzenberg ridges. . . Start off from the #trailhead at @manleywinelodge just outside historic Tulbagh, keeping right on the tarmac for a couple hundred metres before klapping a sharp left over a stile and onto a trippy 3km #singletrack stretch skedaddling along the Klein Bergrivier. This morphs onto a gravel road climb through apple and plum orchards until you reach the split between the Green and Black Routes at 6km. . . Put on your Big Boy Pants right about now, as you're about to say hello to Granny as you wind a steep switchback trail to the Bone Trail summit (7.5km). You rejoin the Green Route at 9am, having rejoiced in the joys of gravity, but the next ascent lies in wait. Much up-and-down follows as the trail roller-coasters about in wild abandon, until you bottom out at approximately 15km. . . The fun is by no means done as you dip past Schalkenbosch (18km) on a speedy gravel section. Keep it pedal to the metal as you bomb back into the sleepy main street, with at least a dozen quirky eateries vying for your cash dollar. Vandag in die Geskiedenis: 13 April 1688

Vir die klein Kaapse nedersetting was die jaar 1688 van groot betekenis. Met die koms van die Franse vlugtelinge is die geledere van die koloniste versterk en het die Calvinistiese godsdiens ’n verdere versterking en stukrag ondergaan.

Die Hugenote het hulle vaderland in 1685 verlaat nadat die Edik van Nantes herroep is en hulle aan meedoënlose vervolging, vernietiging van hul kerke ens. blootgestel was. Die bewindhebbers van die VOC het van die geleentheid gebruik gemaak om ’n aantal van hierdie Protestantse vlugtelinge na die yl bewoonde Kaapkolonie te stuur.

As vlugtelinge was die Hugenote vanselfsprekend brandarm, en slegs deur geloof, deursettingsvermoë en onvermoeide ywer het hulle die eerste moeilike jare oorleef. In die vallei van die Bergrivier het hulle hul gevestig, veral in die boloop van die rivier, in die “Fransche Hoek”.

Die Hugenote was soos die Hollandse koloniste Calviniste, maar in sterker graad. Frankryk was immers die land van oorsprong van die Calvinisme, waarvoor die Hugenote bereid was om soveel op te offer. Waar die Calvinisme in Nederland ’n onskatbare aandeel gehad het in die geloofskrag, moed, vertroue en standvastigheid van sy mense, het die Hugenote hierdie eienskappe aan die Kaap onteenseglik versterk.

Die godsvertroue in ’n almagtige en liefdevolle Vader, wat ’n wesenskenmerk van die Afrikaner se geloof vorm, het dus hier sy beslag gekry.
