Nerd: If I’m being honest, my science teacher absolutely adored Jupiter. I don’t know why but that memory of him ranting about how cool it was just really stuck with me. I was only about 8 years old. But I found myself agreeing with him. Back then my fascination was a lot more childish. I thought it was fascinating that since Jupiter was a gas planet it hadn’t been blown away yet. I grew up from that view but the interest never left.

Stability Chapter 7

Otis Driftwood x Reader

Otis heard you before he saw you, dancing and singing in your cut off shorts and tired shirt. Your walkman swung dangerously back and forth on your hips as you sang to the rolling stones song while you washed your car. It was a super hot summer day in the unforgiving heart of texas. The car was your baby. It was a gift from Otis for your birthday, you had fallen in love with it when they towed it to the house after the last group of victims was captured. You told him you always wanted one of these so he and Rufus secretly fixed it up for you. He still insisted you go everywhere with him in his truck but you convinced him to let you drive yourself once in a while ( but not too far ) Spraying the hose over the hood you leaned over to get the farthest part, your ass poking out in the air.

"Am I hard enough?

It was obvious the music was so loud you didn't hear him as he dragged a screaming victim toward the shed in the back. He stopped dragging her for a second to watch you and laugh softly. Well, that's adorable and hot as shit he thought to himself. The poor girl he was currently dragging took this opportunity to claw and bite at his hand in an attempt to get away in. For A split second she did, She wiggled out of his grasp and tried to take off towards the road. He quickly grabbed her and threw her on the ground pulling her by the hair back towards the house. All this while you were none the wiser, enjoying your song on your headphones. He resumed his spot leaning against the house staring at you.

You sang the last part a little louder using the sponge as a microphone. You were getting into this what you assumed was a solo performance. Swinging your hips back and forth you grabbed the hose and sprayed all over the trunk of the car. He was thrusting the girl back and forth by her hair to shush her as he leaned against the side of the house watching you. "Damn bitch shut the fuck up!, I'm trying to enjoy the view". He looked toward her in disgust that she would dare shrek and distract him. "Mister please let me go, I won't tell anyone". " I SAID SHUT UP" 

He suddenly heard the music better now, he looked up to see you with your headphones down now around your neck the music softly playing in a muffled tone. Staring at him with a smile slightly leaning against the car. " Whatcha doing there is handsome?". " Watching you " he smirked. 

"Am I hard enough?

"Oh are ya now? So ...what are you gonna you do with her?" You pointed with the sponge at the dry heaving girl still on the ground with her hair in his fist. "Ah I don't know" he looked down at her then back at you " any ideas?" He lifted an eyebrow at you. "Maybe a few" you bit your lip a little tilting your head to the side. " I was going to tie her up in the shed and try that experiment I was running with you the other night but I don't think she's gonna survive. She also won't stop squirming", he chuckled and thrust her a little bit more back and forth. She muttered something inaudible. "That's fine," you said, tossing the sponge into the bucket. " We can tie her to the bed after she might stop squirming then." You flashed him a wicked smile.

 He winked at you, "my god woman you are wicked...have I told you I love you lately?" He asked, clearing his throat, the bulge that started to grow in his jeans was becoming more and more distracting. "Hmmm" you replied " maybe but you can show me how much you love me later" you leaned on the hood of the car allowing for him to get a good view of your shirt.

 He hastily sucked in the air standing up quickly, "hold that thought" he says turning back toward the shed. "Hey! " You shouted he turned back to you real quick, spinning the poor girl as well, her feet and legs dragging.  You took the soapy sponge and tossed it at him, smacking him in the chest soaking his white shirt. He cursed under his breath then laughed, wiping his face with his other hand. "You are gonna pay for that as soon as I'm back from tying this bitch up". He looked back at you one more time while heading back to the shed.

"God I hate this fucking song can you change it?"... "OTIS hello?". Baby sat up from the floor of the van and snapped her fingers at Otis. "Hey get your goddamn fingers out my face woman the fuck is wrong with you" he angrily swatted at Baby's hand as she attempted to snap in his face again. " I said I don't like that song so change it" "I don't give a flying dick what you like, I'm drivin' and we're leaving this song." She slumped back angrily onto the floor. Earning a chuckle from her father Spaulding. "S'not funny daddy" she snapped at him crossing her arms. "Oh lighten up there kiddo you know the rules, the driver picks the music". 

Spaulding had finally met up with both of them at the motel. Although it had taken him a while due to some personal delay he arrived there in the nick of time to help finish off torturing the poor victims. After killing the rest of the family the daughter of Roy and Gloria was left to wear her father's skin on her face and be hung up behind the door to scare the unfortunate housekeeper when coming to assess the room. unable to get her father's skin off and running in a frantic the daughter unknowingly ran into the highway to be hit by a semi-truck. Using the van they stole from them they attempted to meet you at the next stop. 

Otis only hoped they weren't too far behind you. Suddenly Baby perked up and glanced at the passing billboard." Just in case anyone's interested, I think I'm gonna be wanting some ice cream in about 10 miles" she excitedly looked back toward her father and then to Otis. Otis looked over at her and repeated her [in a mocking tone]  "I think I'm gonna be wanting some ice cream in about 10 miles." Baby looked back at home with an angry expression "Hey DON'T you fucking imitate me, it's fucking rude!"

Otis:" Fuck you", Baby: "Fuck you! "Two fucking seconds for the kid, is that gonna kill you?" Spaulding interjected getting real sick of the interaction between the two of them.

"Yes, it is going to kill me! I have calculated the time, and two seconds is the exact amount of time that is a hazard to my fucking health!" Otis replied visibly getting more and more annoyed with the idea of stopping. " What the fuck is your problem? I'm in and out in two seconds!" Baby snapped at him. 

   

Spaulding laughed a little "You know? I think I'm gonna get me some tutti fucking fruity." "Tutti fucking fruity, that sounds good!" Baby said nudging her father. "I'm glad that finding y/n doesn't mean shit to either of you now I know who is taking this seriously" he gripped his hands on the steering wheel in anger. These fucking idiots he thought to himself. " Wow excuse you…. How dare you imply I don't care about finding my BEST FRIEND. You know she meant the world to me before She meant the world to you, she was my best friend before she was your wife ok? I met her first… don't think because I'm not sulking like you I don't worry about her. But she's stronger than you give her credit for and you've been treating her like a child!!!". Otis didn't respond to her, he was getting madder by the second. He simply gripped the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white.

 "I suggest we go see Charlie lay low there for a night before heading to the next motel," Spaulding said looking over at Otis. " Why the fuck would we do that?" Otis asked, slightly gripping the steering wheel even harder. Being away from you this long was not good for his mental health. It was throwing him off his game. It was making him anxious and nothing made him anxious. This was a very foreign and uncomfortable feeling to him. He wanted to get rid of it and to do that he had to find you. He only anticipated being away from you for maybe 12 hours and even the thought of that made him very uncomfortable. 

It's now been days this is unacceptable he needs to find you. "Look I saw on the news that the police are already on your tail. It's best that we throw off their scent a bit and lay low one more day can't hurt y/n is a smart girl she's gonna be alright". Otis didn't reply, he simply looked at the long stretch of road. Spalding continued, "I would hate to lead anyone to her Otis, Baby is right we care about her too but she's tough and smart I'm sure she's seen the news she will get the idea why we aren't there". "I don't trust that fucker Charlie" Otis finally replied with a sigh. Spaulding chuckled "yeah welp get over it". 

They drove through the rest of the afternoon only stopping for ice cream of course to prevent any distress from Baby and Spaulding. Pulling up to Charlie’s fun town, Otis’s annoyance grew more by the second. He hasn't been back here in years, he used to come on occasion to enjoy some of the girls here, but that quickly changed when you came around. He didn't like or trust Charlie, he had an inkling that this man was only out for himself no matter what Spaulding said.

(Hello I have typed everything else that is in this post and now I am putting a parenthetical at the top. this post is very long, so you don’t have to read it, and if you do read it, you don’t have to Experience Concern, I’m usually fine and probably will be, but! If you do read it, and you do experience concern, would you mind telling me? Normally I do not require that, and I do not actually require that you read this long post, but if you do, it might be helpful to tell me)

(Also I can’t do cuts on mobile, so, sorry) (aha I am on desktop now and have added a cut, though this post is now from the past)

So! the good news:

-every homework I have ever had is done! all of it! the two classes I needed to finish after Big Cascading Extensive Sickness are fully completed! I have taken five classes of my grad program which is eight regular classes and then a semester where you do your thesis, so like ten classes altogether! Halfway there! Woo!

-I do not acquire more classes until not tomorrow but next Monday after that, so I have a week with some downtime in it! in which to do ADLs and write and listen to podcasts!

-my health situation has been back-and-forth this past… time period, but today I do not feel sick, nauseous, panicky, brain-stuck or sad!!! I will gladly take the current Mood Situation over any of those, and double-especially over nausea!!!

now for the part that’s not a complaint but also not not a complaint

-so I still cannot lately focus for shit until the very last minute where I realize there will be immediate bad consequences of not doing the thing right exactly now

-(this is an intermittent Mood Disorder problem for me, we are tweaking my meds, I am not going to be experiencing this brain forever)

-the final project was originally due Monday, and then “Sunday if possible” and then “can you turn it in Saturday night so I can grade it early Sunday?”

-it was not his fault about the moved deadline he is expecting a big hurricane and wanted to get it done pre-power-outage and the registrar would have been a big stickler for anything after Monday

-I figured that anything before 6:AM Sunday counted for these purposes, as he seemed unlikely to be doing grading any earlier than that

-I spaced out very badly most of Saturday

-I opened my laptop around 10PM

-my brain refused to let me do literally anything until like 1AM, at which point the assignment was due sometime between “an hour ago” and “five hours from now”

-then I unlocked the ability to focus for about five to fifteen minute increments at random a few times an hour

-it turns out that “literally after the assignment is due by the most generous definition, it’s already late and can only get later, someone is this minute waiting for you,” the point at which I regain my normal ability to just like, sit down, do a thing, and then have it be done.

-I worked pretty much straight through 7-noon, proofread, formatted, attached the document to an email with some made up personal problems in it

-not because I’m not having real life problems, I just didn’t want to explain the real ones

-turned it in at 12:35

-G submitted my final grade to the registrar already and will email me final comments post-hurricane

-if he secretly hates me he still gave me an A in the class, so who cares.

-the assignment took somewhere around 8 hours of focus work, most of which I did in the six and a half hours after it was (again, by the most generous estimate) definitely due and already late

-I guess it’s good to know I can Enter The Zone if I place enough consequences on myself

-I miss The Zone, it used to be comparatively much easier for me to go there

-I very much do hope the meds adjustment fixes my brain a bit, and soon

-I just did a casual assessment of my feelings about things and got “unusually limited emotions, somewhat flat inside,” about it, so I’m jotting that down.

-I don’t remember how I’ve been feeling, exactly, but I do remember telling my therapist that I’ve been feeling a bit flat lately, so that does check out!

-alex, if you were doing homework for fourteen hours, when did you sleep last?

-first of all, I was doing homework for eight hours, interspersed with six hours of genuinely nothing, I truly don’t even know

-that’s not even a terrible ratio for lately, there were entire calendar days last week where I had a brain for about two decent hours out of twenty-four

-there has been a lot of Mindless Scrolling lately, but also yesterday I put my phone away and genuinely did not even glance at anything but schoolwork on the computer

-what did I do for six hours? my guy, I truly do not know

-that wasn’t the question, was it? I’m kidding, I remember the question, it was about sleeping

-I slept from around 6-9PM last night, for some reason, and then haven’t since! lately I’ve been very nocturnal as much as I’ve been anything, so I am trying to reset my sleep schedule by going to bed, very tired, around 9PM tonight.

-assuming I will feel tired later, not sure body sensations are things I still experience very often, including tiredness.

-I’ve been very verbose today, and my voice on the phone sounded a bit manic earlier, so maybe that’s a thing, but in a distant and far away way, even that.

-huh. I feel like that would be concerning if I was closer to normal today. might edit this post a bit and then share it with my therapist.

“I can’t believe Nino got akumatized because of me,” Chat said softly.

They stood on the roof of a nearby building, looking down at the boy in question. Nino was still rubbing his head and looking around in confusion; like everyone else, he had no idea what had happened while he was akumatized and so was left feeling worried and embarrassed over what he might have done under Hawkmoth’s influence. Ladybug and Chat hadn’t had much time to talk to him. But...

She rested a comforting hand on Chat’s shoulder. “Nino’s your friend. He cares about you a lot. It makes total sense for him to get mad over how unfair your dad is,” she said. “I think Adrien should go talk to him.”

“You think?” Chat looked nervous.

“Yeah. Go on. No one is watching but me, so you’re clear.” She gave him a gentle nudge.

He visibly gulped but leaped down off the building. A green flash of light signified his detransformation. Moments later, Adrien jogged out from between the two buildings and went over to Nino. Ladybug wished she could stay on the roof to watch, but her transformation was mere seconds from giving out. She jumped down into the same alley as Chat.

“Spots off!” Ladybug said.

“Good job, Mari - what are you doing?” Tikki asked.

“Sssh!” Marinette hissed, moving to the edge of the alley. She thrust a couple of cookies at Tikki, then peeked out and watched intently as Adrien spoke to Nino. Through their bond, she could hear everything that they were saying.

“Are you okay?” Adrien was asking. “I’m so sorry, Nino.”

“Sorry for what?” Nino said. “I’m the one who ruined your birthday by getting akumatized.”

“Ruined?!” Adrien exclaimed. “No way! You cared so much about my birthday that you got akumatized because my father was being awful. That means a lot to me.”

Nino was quiet for a moment. “Well... that’s not the only reason I got akumatized. It was the tipping point, but...”

“Are you sure you should be spying?” Tikki said into Marinette’s ear, distracting Marinette from the two boys. “It looks like Nino and Adrien are having a private conversation, and you can’t hear them from here anyway.”

“I just wanted to make sure they were okay,” Marinette lied. Truth be told, there wasn’t really any privacy when you had a soulmate. She’d lost several hours of sleep to knitting Adrien’s birthday gift because she had to wait until he was asleep, and unaware of what she was doing, to do it.

The result had been completely worth it, of course. She wrapped her arms around herself and smiled, thinking about Adrien’s reaction. It was a little painful - no one should be that surprised by a gift - but it also meant a lot to know how much he adored her gift. Even now, he wore the blue scarf around his neck.

‘Whoa! Did you hear that?’ Adrien thought.

‘What? I was distracted by Tikki. What happened?’ Marinette thought back, cursing her kwami. She hadn’t yet mastered the skill of holding a conversation mentally with Adrien while also talking outwardly to someone else. It was too hard to split her focus.

Hearing through Adrien’s ears and even seeing through his eyes was easier than ever, and of course their thoughts streamed through their bond like water through a sieve, but that didn’t mean Marinette was any better at having her attention divided. She frowned, realizing that she had missed something major.

‘Nino has a crush on you,’ Adrien thought.

‘WHAT?!’ Marinette thought at full volume, just barely keeping herself from screaming the word out loud. As it was, she clapped her hand over her mouth and a strangled squeak escaped her.

“Marinette? What’s wrong?” Tikki exclaimed.

Marinette hastily cleared her throat. “Nothing! I just remembered I have an assignment due tomorrow. I should get home fast. Any chance you’re good to go?”

Tikki looked at her suspiciously. “You’re not planning to go talk to Adrien as Ladybug, as you?”

“No, of course not,” Marinette said, startled.

“Are you sure?” Tikki said, narrowing her eyes.

“Why would I talk to Adrien as Ladybug? He’s my boyfriend. I can talk to him as me anytime I want,” Marinette said.

Tikki didn’t look entirely convinced, which only served to make Marinette’s nerves worsen. Apparently they hadn’t been as sneaky as she had hoped. She pasted on her most innocent smile and resolved to be a lot more careful in the future. Adrien’s amusement at the whole situation wasn’t really helping. She sent a pulse of annoyance back at him.

“Okay,” Tikki said finally.

“Great, thanks. Spots on!” Marinette whispered. She breathed a sigh of relief once she was transformed - no more kwami literally hovering over her shoulder.

‘Good?’ Adrien thought, smiling like the little shit that he was.

‘Nino has a crush on me?!’ Ladybug thought back incredulously. ‘No way!’ She peeked back around the corner and saw that Nino and Adrien were walking away, heading back towards the school.

‘Way,’ Adren thought. ‘He saw you kiss my cheek this morning and it made him a little upset and my dad pushed him over the edge. I didn’t know what to tell him... I didn’t want to lie. So I told him the truth and said we’re dating. Is that okay?’

'This is crazy! I can’t believe this,’ Ladybug thought, pacing back and forth. She and Nino had been going to the same school since they were little kids. Hell, they’d been in the same class for the past four years. They were friends, but she wouldn’t have called them close. And she definitely wouldn’t have guessed that Nino felt that way about her!

Oh god, what would’ve happened if he’d asked her out before she met Adrien? She might actually have said yes. Nino was a great guy. He was obsessed with music, sure, but no more so than Marinette was with designing. She cringed as she realized how convoluted things could have become, with Nino’s best guy friend being his girlfriend’s soulmate, and Marinette’s best girl friend being her boyfriend’s soulmate.

Alya. Ladybug stopped dead as realization struck her. So far, Alya and Nino had been keeping their soulmate bond blocked. They had figured out how to construct rudimentary shields of their own rather than pay someone else to do it for them; Alya said it was because she was nervous, and wanted to get to know Nino on her own terms before bringing the whole soulmate thing into the equation.

‘I couldn’t date Alya’s soulmate! She would kill me!’ Ladybug thought frantically.

Adrien laughed. ‘My Lady, calm down,’ he thought. ‘You’re dating me, remember? Your kitty?’

‘Right. Of course.’ Ladybug shook her head. She was catastrophizing again. She took a deep breath, trying to get her pulse under control. Adrien sent her a slew of soothing feelings, which helped.

‘So is it okay I told Nino we’re dating? He kinda figured that was the case already,’ Adrien thought.

‘Yes. Yeah. That was good thinking,’ Ladybug thought, hoping that meant Nino would never bring up his crush again. She would have to figure out some way to make Alya and Nino spend time together. They would be so good together if the two of them could just get past their initial nerves!

‘I’ll leave that plotting to you,’ Adrien thought back. ‘I told Nino I’d walk him back to the school.’

‘Then can you meet me at the Eiffel Tower?’ Ladybug thought.

‘Sure,’ Adrien thought. He was distracted now because Nino was talking to him. Perfect.

Ladybug used her yoyo to make her way home, deliberately keeping her thoughts on Nino and Alya. They’d come close to a disaster - how awkward would it have been if Nino had actually asked her out? - and now she had to assess all the variables to figure out how to make things out work the way they were supposed to.

And also, she would have to tell Alya she and Adrien were dating before Nino let it slip. Alya wouldn’t be happy to have been kept out of the loop like that. She and Adrien had tentatively agreed to keep things low key for now, mostly for the same reasons they were keeping their soulmate status secret, but it didn’t have to be a complete secret.

She entered her room, gathered what she need, and headed back out again. The Eiffel Tower was back to normal after their battle. She landed on their favorite beam and sat down to look at the city. It was late in the afternoon, but at least there were no bubbles full of helpless adults floating up towards the sky.

‘On my way,’ Chat thought to her.

‘Do you think your dad got you anything for your birthday?’ she thought.

‘If he did, it was nothing more than a pen. That’s what he‘s given me for the last two... no, three years,’ Chat thought back. ‘Before my mom died, she was always the one who planned something special for my birthday.’

Ladybug shook her head. ‘Again, your dad -’

‘Sucks, I know,’ Chat thought. His boots touched down on the beam behind her. Ladybug turned to see him. He smiled at her, and she smiled back.

“Hello, Chaton,” she said.

“Bugaboo. Not that I mind spending time with you, but what’s this about?” He walked closer.

“I know Adrien already got his gift from Marinette,” she began. “But Ladybug wanted Chat to have his birthday gift, too.”

His lips parted in surprise, eyes rounding. “Wh-what? Seriously?!”

“Seriously. Here.” She patted the beam beside her.

Chat sank down, staring at her. “You didn’t have to give me two presents.”

“I know I didn’t have to. I wanted to,” she said, setting the box on his lap. “Go on! Open it.”

He let out a soft laugh. “You’re impatient.”

“I’m sleep deprived. I get cranky,” Ladybug said, wiggling. “So stop torturing me!”

Chat shook his head - he didn’t like the thought of her sacrificing sleep time just for him, which Ladybug naturally brushed off - and unwrapped the box. He opened it up to reveal a beret made from the same soft blue material as his scarf.

“Maybe for Christmas, I’ll make you the matching gloves - oof!” Ladybug yelped as he tackled her, knocking her over in his haste to wrap her up in a huge hug. Staring up at the sky as Chat cried into her shoulder, Ladybug wrapped her arms around him and gently stroked his hair.

‘Merci, Marinette,’ he thought, the mental words so weighted with gratitude and love that her breath caught.

‘Bon anniversaire, Adrien,’ she thought back, this time pressing a kiss to the top of his head.

That night, Adrien received a hastily wrapped pen as a gift from his father by way of Nathalie. For once, he didn’t even care. He threw the pen on his desk and fell asleep clutching the scarf and beret to his chest. Marinette stayed up late to start work on a pair of gloves.

5.11.19 - my life is falling apart and other updates.

Hello internet.

Just wanted to talk today. I like Tumblr because not many people I know follow me on here. Also there isn’t a word limit, and sometimes a girl just wants to rant.

So this is me releasing all my thoughts into the world today.

1. ACADEMICS

I quit chartered accountancy. Just woke up one day, and told my parents I couldn’t do it anymore. That was a long week at home, and I know they’re disappointed in me. All along I’ve been a bright student, somebody who never disappointed and they could brag about at dinner parties. But this course cut me open. It hurt me, it sent me crumbling and it dragged me through hell. In the movie Dear Zindagi, Alia Bhatt is in therapy and Shahrukh Khan tells her that sometimes we keep doing the hard thing because we think we have to. And we forget that its okay to pick an easy way. I guess that’s what I’m doing. I’m choosing the easier way because the harder way made me unhappy, it made me unhappy to the point where I didn’t want to be alive anymore.

So the new plan is that I will give my GRE and apply to Masters in Finance courses in the US. Preferably in the STEM field, because its easy to get a work visa after graduating if you’re a STEM graduate. Do I think this is the perfect career path for me? No, absolutely not. But do I think it will do me good to finally move the fuck out of home, have a change of continent, meet some new people, and have the college experience I always felt I missed out on? Yes.

So this is what we’re doing. My GRE is in 12 days. I am barely prepared.

2. DRIVE/PASSION

I always had a passion for writing. I knew when I discovered it that it not only brought me joy, but I was pretty damn good at it. Unfortunately being brown, and coming from a family of people who had all built their career from scratch by making practical decisions, because they didn’t have a choice due to their humble backgrounds, I was always told that writing was a futile thing and would just be a hobby, not something to be looked at as a career option. I disagreed. Having made a bit of money from it now, I still disagree.

But I’ve been brought up in the lap of luxury and I have a pretty high standard of living. I like my weekly Starbucks and I go to bars that don’t have happy hours. I enjoy the bimonthly staycation in a fancy hotel, and I hate repeating outfits and thoroughly enjoy fashion, so I’m always buying new clothes. It makes me happy to look good.

So yeah, I agree that since I haven’t had the liberty to pursue writing full time, I haven’t yet found a way to make a living from it. Maybe it’s a risk, and a back up plan is advisable. But all I know is writing is the only thing I feel like waking up to do. Even now, when my life is falling apart, it’s the only thing that makes sense to me.

Growing up I was always a hardworking student. And if I wasn’t, my Mom made me that way. She would yell if I got bad marks, and she always encouraged that I at least be in the top ten in class. Even the school I went to was pretty much only concerned with academics. And so due to the environment and brainwashing, I did well. I stayed in the 90 percent lane all my life, all the way up to twelfth grade. In my junior college I had two of the worst years of my life. I was molested by my co caption for months on end, and I couldn’t escape him. It was constant mental, emotional and physical turmoil, more so because I couldn’t tell anyone. Despite how insanely difficult it was to spend six hours every day in the place where my molester showed up every day, I still managed to keep my grades high. I scored 92 percent, and my parents were happy.

I had no passion for finance, but since I had proved to be so bright, my parents said the only thing to do now was four years of Chartered Accountancy. After that, my life would be sorted. I passed the first level by studying for 2 months, while other people attended classes for a year. I passed the second level too. I got into one of the biggest global multiconsulting firms in the world for my internship, and my parents were happy. My life was on track, and it didn’t matter that I was crying in the cabs home from work because I was so miserable. It didn’t matter as long as the plan was being followed. After all, the plan was being followed and I was so goddamn close to the finish line.

Two years into my internship I decided I needed to quit, or at least shift to a smaller firm. The pressures in this one were too much and I was so sad I could barely make it out of bed. So I told my parents I needed to study for my finals, and they got me out of it. My mental health was derailing – but oh boy, was this just the beginning. I moved to a smaller firm and pretended to stay home on the weekends and study. Instead, all I did was lay in bed with YouTube videos playing on loop because I couldn’t bear to be alone with my thoughts.

2017 was the year my boyfriend broke up with me too, so all kinds of shit was hitting the fan at the same time. I was fucked up in every way. I started using alcohol to fall asleep, to wake up, to do pretty much anything actually. To engage in social situations, I’d carry around a quarter in my bag and drink it in the cab. It eased my anxiety and helped me smile at people in a more convincing way.

2018 sucked. So did 2019. These two years are a blurry flatline in my head. I have been drowning like the ground I walk on is quicksand, and the more I struggle to get out, the more it pulls me in. When I look back at my life’s work in the past two years, I see nothing. Nothing that counts as an achievement anyway.

I wasted them while everybody else was putting in the work to get into ivy league schools or pass exams, get their first real jobs kickstarted. I lay in bed and watched every tv show there was to watch with the curtains drawn. I ran through horrible men and gave my body up to practical strangers that I felt nothing for, and the ones I liked left me, like they always do. Yeah, I wrote two books. Made enough money to support my alcohol addiction, my shopping habits, my vacations and staycations. I blew it all off on the temporary ride of whatever would bring me happiness in the moment.

I lost myself. I lost myself to illness and addiction and worthless friends and denial. I’m still lost. I used to have a drive in my body, something that said wake up and get things done today. Instead, I’ve been doing the zombie shuffle through my own life. Sometimes I wake up and my first thought is – “How long till this day is over.” I count the hours until I can crawl back into bed, till its an acceptable time to go to sleep. Because the only place I don’t feel like my brain has a fucking dense fog rolling through it is when I’m sleeping.

I used to be brilliant, and I’ve lost my shine. I’ve lost my willpower, my ability to be the hardest working person in the room. I have gotten self destructive to the point where I procrastinate and procrastinate and then it’s too late for everything. I am so fucked up, you have no idea.

I don’t know what I should do to bring that feeling of wanting to do something perfectly back. You know, the feeling of studying so hard you know everything on the test. The feeling of being the best, no questions asked. The feeling of answering questions in class and submitting assignments on time and just…enjoying the process of academia that I used to love so much. But I guess in depression, your brain sort of grows old and tired. It can’t remember things. It doesn’t want to move, or think, or do anything difficult.

My memory is deteriorating and the moments I’m supposed to remember and the information I should retain? It gets lost more often than not. And I am so scared to assess the scale of this incompetency that I just don’t even try because whenever I do, it’s all so overwhelming and all the trauma from Chartered Accountancy comes swirling back to hit me in the head.

3. BODY IMAGE

As a result of my constant sadness, I had to find ways to make myself happy. The periods of happiness lasted for a short while, but I rode the highs to the fullest because I knew the darkness would be back eventually. I turned to alcohol and marijuana and nicotine, to the point where every three or four days I would need one or the other, if not all three in combination. I would drink every night to be able to fall asleep. In my cupboard there is a special collection of all the wine bottles that have acted as sleeping pills.

I also began to eat junk food, because carbohydrates make you happy before they make you feel like shit. All addictions are like that, actually. Swiggy was my best friend, and my array of lovers : greasy Chinese, McDonalds, any dessert place – just whatever was bad for your skin, fattening, but would be brought to you by a wonderful man on a bike no matter what the weather was, and was easy to eat and throw all evidence of out later and forget that somewhere on my body, this food would settle into another ugly layer.

In the middle I got sick of myself and went to the gym, started going at it hard. My body improved and the endorphins were definitely helping, but a few months in I stopped waking up. My brain said it didn’t want to anymore, and I, the slave to my depression, caved and listened. I haven’t been since. The swiggy orders keep coming in every day and I keep throwing the containers into the trash, changing quickly from one outfit into another so I don’t have to see what I look like naked.

But I know. I somehow hate myself for the disgust I have for certain parts of my body, and then for the part of me that knows it wants to “fix” them all, but is in constant battle with the part of me that says I shouldn’t feel guilty for taking up space or for being a curvy girl. But body positivity isn’t about a number on a scale, its just about whether you like your reflection in the mirror, whether it makes you happy. Mine hasn’t made me happy in a long time. But then again, what the fuck has?

Sometimes I’m in trial rooms with harsh lighting and I just stare at myself and call myself horrible names. I keep the lights off when boys come over and the clothes come off. I keep saying, “I have to lose 10 kgs,” but I keep ordering from Swiggy every time a depressive episode rolls in to make it go away.

I keep setting deadlines, like, “After this month, I will cut out sugar!” and “After this exam, I will go back to the gym!” but then I fuck up and I’m like, oh well. Maybe next month.

The bottom line is I despise my body and the way it’s started to look. It doesn’t help that my Instagram feed is full of women with perfect skin, defined abs, and perky butts with chiselled features. I want all of that. I want to feel beautiful, and beautiful is hard work. Which, of course, my brain pines after, but never actually lets me get out of bed to do.

4. DATING/LOVE

My last serious relationship ended in 2017. I briefly dated somebody exclusively in the beginning of 2019, but he turned out to be the biggest asshole of them all, and “didn’t realise” he was using me to get over his ex-girlfriend. He broke up with me over text, pretty much cheated on me, didn’t even explain himself until I found out from some mutual friends. After that I was done, I couldn’t take love anymore. I couldn’t let anybody in because every relationship I’ve ever been in has ended with me being the second choice or me being dumped or betrayed and left hurt and broken for years.

The trauma is too much. So I decided I was never going to let anybody leave me again or enter my life and find a permanent place in it. I became the biggest fuckboy of them all, despite my conscience that has always been a good, kind and sensitive thing. This player thing really isn’t for me, but it was fun for a while to trump boys and play mind games and make them feel inadequate about themselves, to stand them up and never call back and ask them to leave my house after I had gotten what I wanted, to only call when I wanted it again.

I purposely picked out the worst, baddest ones. Then I tamed them by being even worse than they were. In May I began speaking to somebody who was fun and hilarious and good looking and well off and who made my brain feel alive again. Every time he texted me I caught myself smiling, and all our conversations consisted of saying witty sarcastic things to each other. We went on one date and he kissed me in the car, but for some reason in real life his life was so different from mine, that I declared the kiss good (he put his hand in my hair and grabbed, in a non hurtful but very I’m-super-into-this way, ooofff) and the date a disaster. I don’t know whether I was just in denial of my now strongly sprouting crush, or whether I actually hated it.

As the months passed, I tried to get him to go out with me again. I’m not much of a pursuer, because I have always been the one who gets pursued. But this boy was different. We would talk a lot over DM and we would make fun of each other and his life was fabulous and exciting and I watched from the outside, and built him into a much grander version of who he is in real life. I do that. What made him even more attractive was that he didn’t want me, and I couldn’t figure out for the love of God why not. I thought I was the whole package, and I even started to act out a little bit in the psycho way he told me he liked his women, which is SO TOXIC but I had actually felt something for somebody after so long that I didn’t even backtrack. Anyway, it soon became clear that it was not going to lead anywhere because he just disappointed me, didn’t show up, and my ego took a hit. I let it go, mostly. Or I will, as time passes.

I think I deserve love. Not the makes you feel good and carries your bag when its heavy kind. I deserve the love that I am ready to give – the grand romantic gestures that would be so dumb, but somehow he makes them work. The cant live without you love. The we’re best friends and teammates and nothing, not even distance, not our past demons, will keep us from making it work. I want the kind of person who is so sure of who they are, so internally confident, and so absolutely sure that I am their soulmate that I convinces me. I don’t want to meet a lot of wrong boys, goddamnit. I’ve done my fair share of the wrong boys, I’ve paid my dues for the amount of hurt one person is supposed to have. Now I just want the right one.

Deep down, I know he’s not here. Not in this city, because that would just be a cruel joke. Imagine meeting your soulmate and then having to go to college in six months. Fucking shit. If the universe even pities me a little bit, it wont do that to me.

I sometimes wonder if my life only stays on track if my romantic life is going well. I mean, when I dated my last serious boyfriend, I had it all – I was skinny. I had a prestigious internship. I was passing my exams. The writing was flourishing. This is a very scary thought, because I don’t want to depend or co exist on somebody else for my happiness in any way. But I cant deny the fact that my entire life fell apart when that last boy, who I loved with all my heart, broke up with me. It hasn’t been quite the same since.

His life is going spectacularly well, though. Lots of women and a great job and enough money to buy plane tickets to different cities to meet these women when he wouldn’t even drive down three hours to see me in a neighbouring town. I hate how unfair life is. He’s found some amazing people that he has feelings for, that like him back, even though he’s the one who broke my heart. And I still haven’t found a single person who even makes it to the second date, and the only one who did was just using me as a placeholder while his cheating ex girlfriend took a vacation from their relationship. So how the fuck is that fair? Am I being given the worst kind of experiences because my broken heart produces a special brand of my best writing? If yes, then I’m tired. I’d rather be a mediocre writer, but I cant spend my whole life being abandoned and cheated on and dumped and taken for granted, especially when the kind of love I can give is loyal and abundant and pure.

  That’s it. Those are my issues, or some of them. Honestly I’m tired of typing and want to retire to my safe space that is my bed, and the deep dark comfort of unconsciousness. I just thought I might feel better if I could release this into the world, before I feel a little better and write another post manifesting what I envision my life to be next year.

I used to say that the good thing about rock bottom is that there’s nowhere to go but up. I wish there was some kind of tracker that told you when you’d actually hit rock bottom, because all I do is keep on fucking sinking deeper and deeper.

Well hello there! So, about a week ago, the lovely @xbydefault tagged me in a post, and I figured that while there is a lull in the chaos that is my life, I would take a moment to respond. Sorry this took so long, and in answer to one of your questions, I have no idea how this happened, but it’s too late to turn back now.

So, without further ado, here are 15 things about me:

1. Are you named after anyone?

Nope. My first, middle, and last names are all pretty common in the English speaking world. However, my middle name is a family name on my mother’s side, so all first born daughters have had the same middle name for the past 5 generations. No idea who started this or why it became a thing in the family.

2. When was the last time you cried?

I...cannot remember. There have been plenty of times I’ve wanted to have a good old fashioned breakdown over the past six months, but I stopped short because I was either too busy to break down or too damn tired. I think there were some happy tears around Christmas when I got to meet my niece for the first time.

3. Do you have kids?

Noooo. I should not be responsible for tiny humans for more than a few hours.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Every day. I actually think it’s part of my job description (it helps me to not hurt the stupid people).

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

That they exist, then I move on to things like hair, height, clothing, and general body language (relaxed, angry, nervous, etc.) In my current and past professions, reading emotions from body language is essential to assessing the environment and reacting appropriately. Yay for years of emergency response training!

6. What’s your eye color?

Hazel. For those who are not familiar with this, it’s a greenish-brown. Mom has brown eyes, dad has blue, I get a mix of the two.

7. Scary movie or happy ending?

Umm...happy ending, I guess. I’m an action movie or comedy kind of person.

8. Any special talents?

Not really. Pretty average all around.

9. Where were you born?

Zephyr Cove, Nevada USA. It’s a little resort town on the east side of Lake Tahoe. Lots of black bears. I remember my elementary school having what they called “bear delays” where we weren’t allowed off the bus until someone chased the bear(s) out of the dumpster.

10. What are your hobbies?

I absolutely love fishing of any kind, especially fly fishing. I also enjoy hiking, hunting, skiing/snowboarding, reading, and playing video games.

11. Do you have any pets?

Yes, two dogs who are both very good boys.

12. What sports do you play?

These days I ski/snowboard, and do some boxing when my shoulder cooperates. I was a top softball player in highschool and college, but I haven’t played in years. I miss it.

13. How tall are you?

5′3″ or 160cm for our metric friends. I may be short, but I’m built like a brick barn. Your kneecaps will not survive my fury.

14. Favorite subject in school?

I would have to say music and history. I liked science too, but I was banned from touching things without direct supervision due to an...incident. Seriously, you gave a 4th grader glue, matches, a battery, and some wire, what did you think was going to happen!? Probably a good thing I never met the math requirements for chemistry in highschool.

15. Dream job?

Yikes. Well, you see, two years ago I was working my dream job (I was a police officer), but the World/Fate/Unfortunate Circumstances decided that I couldn’t do that anymore, so I’ve been a little lost the past couple of years while I try to figure out what to do with myself. Honestly, my ideal at the moment is to go back to my roots and have a small farm somewhere, and maybe get around to writing a bit. Who knows?

Dr. Churchill placed the tiny, five pound three ounce, baby girl in her daddy’s arms not long after she was cleaned up and swaddled in a blanket.

Jared gasped, “she’s be-beautiful!”

The baby opened up her big dark brown eyes and looked up at him. She was sucking on her lip and squirming inside her blanket.

“Hello, sweet baby girl.” Jared sniffed, holding her closer- if it was even possible to hold her closer than he already was.

Jared moved over closer to you and held your newborn daughter down so you could see her too. You reached out and caressed her little face lightly with your left hand.

“H-hi baby.” You choked. “I’m m-mommy.”

It would be another hour before you could hold her, which gave Jared a lot of time to bond with his already daddy’s girl, newborn daughter. You were exhausted and sore once you were moved back into your room. You cuddled down into your blankets and closed your eyes. As much as you wanted to hold the tiny human being that just came out of you, sleep was overtaking your body. You were too tired to fight it. You were nearly asleep when Jared entered the room, an unhappy baby in tow.

“I know you’re tired but I also remember you saying that you wanted to breastfeed. Baby girl Padalecki is very very hungry.” He explained.

“I-I don’t know how to do it though.” You mumbled, rubbing your eyes.

“I’ll help you, don’t worry. Gen done it three times before. I know I’m not her… but I learned enough about breastfeeding to guide you along.” Jared reassured you.  

Jared did as he said and walked you through how to breastfeed and even massaged your boob when the baby wouldn’t take it your nipple- it was a little trick you seen from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. when Rachel had her baby, Emma. You turned on your side to alleviate the pressure on the incision from the c-section.

“This tickles.” You giggled lightly once she started breastfeeding.

“Yeah, it’ll probably feel weird for the first few times.” Jared chuckled.

He pulled out his phone and snapped a few pictures of your first real interaction with the baby before opening the FaceTime app.

“Who should we call first, mommy?” Jared smiled, playing with your hair.

“Probably Lacee, just to let her know.” You suggested.

“You’re right, we were so busy having a baby, we never got to check in on the boys and Odette. Hopefully they didn’t drive Lacee to the bar to drink.”

“Oh, Jared, your kids are not that bad.” You hissed playfully.

Connecting was displayed across the screen just twenty seconds after Jared initiated the call to Lacee Jax.

“Hey! Do we have a baby now?” Lacee asked curiously.

As Jared turned the camera towards the baby, he said, “yes we do.”

“Oh my gosh! Jared, Y/N. She’s beautiful. Have you picked out a name yet? What did you name this precious little angel?” Lacee cooed.

“We haven’t picked out a name yet.” Jared chuckled.

“I figured you were going to have a girl. Congratulations you guys! Just a little update, Shep went down fine in the spare room, Tom took a little bit of convincing. He really wanted to stay up to go see the baby but the poor little guy was dropping tired!”

“That seems like Tom.” Jared commented. “He’s always thinking about other people’s feelings before he thinks of his own.”

“And I wonder where he gets that?” Lacee said sarcastically, flashing Jared a wink. “How’s Y/N?”

“She’s pretty good, she’s tired and sore from the emergency c-section. Little miss was breech in the birth canal.”

“Oh Jeez. Danielle was breech almost my whole pregnancy and at the very last moment she changed positions.” Said Lacee. “Oh and before I forget, Odette’s doing fine too, of course. I don’t know how much she likes the idea of having another sibling.”

“I don’t think she’ll like it.” Jared shrugged. “Anyways, I must go, we’ve got a couple of other people to call, then we’re going to hit the sack ourselves- or try to at least.”  

After saying goodbye to Lacee, Jared brushed your hair back out of your face.

“Who should we call next. We should at least get in contact with Gen, Danneel, Jensen, Mom, Dad, Megan and Jeff. We can hit Jensen and Danneel in one call, mom and Dad in one call. Plus if you’re not feeling up to it, mom can tell Megan and Jeff in the morning.”

You looked down at your brand new little girl and brushed your thumb over her cheek as she ate.

“It’s as if she hasn’t eaten in days…” You murmured, watching her gulp back the milk.

You were mesmerized by her beauty.

“For her it’s been like an hour, and say ‘mommy! That’s a long time for me.’” Jared chuckled.

“Let’s call your mom next. It’s like 12 am in San Antonio though, maybe we shouldn’t-“

“-We can’t wait until morning, mom will fly up here and kill me if I never called her right away.”

“Right. Your mom’s on a NTK basis.” You chuckled, watching your daughter.

Like you said, Sharon was on a need-to-know basis. If she didn’t know right away- there was going to be a big problem. Mom and Connecting were displayed across Jared’s IPhone X screen. When Sharon finally answered, it was pretty dark in her room and she was rubbing her eyes.

“Jared? It’s late. What’s going on?” She asked, concerned.

Jared smiled, flipping the camera around to show the baby breastfeeding.

Sharon gasped, “you two had the baby!”

“Yeah we did.”

“Gerald!” Saron called. “Gerald, come here quick.”

“What- what, Sharon! What’s wrong?”

Gerald took one look at the baby through the screen and immediately fell in love. Due to her little pink cap, they could immediately tell she was a girl.

“I thought Y/N wasn’t going to be having the baby for another three weeks or so! I wanted to be there.” Sharon frowned.

“Yeah, we thought so too, but babies don’t care about flight dates or anything like that. Y/N’s water broke and I took her to the hospital after I brought the kids over to her friend, Lacee’s house. By the time we got to the hospital, Y/N was ready to push but the baby was breech and they had to rush her in for an emergency c-section. It was all so scary, mom, but she’s here and she’s healthy- they both are- and that’s the main thing.” Jared explained.

“Do you have a name picked out yet, son?” Gerald asked, watching the baby intently.

“No, Y/N and I haven’t decided and we’re both really tired. I think we might sleep on it and name her in the morning.”

“Well, in that case. We won’t keep you any longer, dear. You look exhausted. I’m very happy that the baby arrived healthy and that Y/N is healthy too. I’ll see if we can cancel our flight and get an earlier date. We love you three.” Sharon smiled.

“Bye, mom. Bye, dad.” Jared smiled tiredly.

“Bye, Sharon. Bye Gerald.” You added, waving at the screen.

Between the FaceTime call to The Padalecki’s and Gen, the baby was finished and needed to be burped. Jared took her and showed you how to burp a baby. It was different than reading it in the books, it was much better to get someone to show you how to do it so that you wouldn’t hurt your first born child by burping her wrong. Gen was overjoyed to know that, even though the baby came early and you had to be cut into, both you and her were okay. You thanked Gen for all her support throughout this pregnancy.

“I don’t know where I’d be without you.” You admitted to Gen.

“You’d be in the exact same spot, ‘cause you’ve got a wonderful guy by your side who knows what he is at. I’m glad that Jared moved on and I’m glad that it was with you. You’re amazing and I know that you’re already a marvelous mom.”

You were nearly asleep by the time Jared got a hold of Jensen and Danneel. He announced that you had a baby girl, via an emergency c-section, that she was nameless and that both baby and mommy were doing okay.

“Congratulations, Jared. Proud papa of four.” Jensen smiled.

“Anddddd congratulations to Y/N too, Jensen this is her first baby!” Danneel added, scolding Jensen.

“I would’ve gotten to that! You never let me finish.” Jensen exclaimed.

“Well thank you guys.” You yawned. “I really wish you were here Dee.”

“I’ll book the next flight up, Y/N. I can’t wait to meet your little miss!”

After telling all your close family and friends, you and Jared decided it was time to put the cellphones up and cuddle with your newborn baby.

“Jared… I-I don’t feel so good.” You rushed to sit up.

Jared pulled the newborn closer to him, “sssh, it’s okay. The doctor said you might be a little nauseous.”

“A little?” You interjected, leaning over the side of the bed.

You urged to throw up. After emptying your stomach contents onto the floor, you lied back, wiped your mouth and looked over to your boyfriend groggily.

“I’ll take care of it, sweetheart. You get some rest.” Jared cooed.

You were so groggy that Jared said you never even stirred when the nurse came in to check on your vitals, check on your uterus and assess the amount of vaginal discharge you were having. As if you had given birth naturally, like your plan had been too, you still had the discharge- something you wish you wouldn’t have to deal with. You managed to pull yourself up to a sitting position when the doctor came into check on you.

“So, do we have a name for little miss yet?” Dr. Churchill asked curiously.

“No, we wanted to sleep on it.” You yawned.

“Oh well, that’s okay. I’ve had some patients wait days before they named their baby.” She chuckled.

“We won’t be waiting days.” You smiled.

“Okay, I’m going to get you to spread your legs for me… then we’re going to do some breathing exercises to strengthen the incision site.”

You did as she asked while you began to think of some names for Baby Girl Padalecki.

“Okay. You’re experiencing a little bit more discharge than usual… we’ll have to keep an eye on that.” Dr. Churchill informed you.

Next you done the breathing exercises, which were more than uncomfortable.

“I’m going to suggest you wait to eat… if you would like, we can start you on some liquids and progress from there.”

After Dr. Churchill left, you and Jared finally got the chance to sit down and talk about the baby’s name.

“I like the name Danika.” You admitted, looking at the small baby curled up in her father’s arms. “I think she looks like a Danika. It means morning star- She looks as bright as a star and as unique as one in the day.”

“I like it.” Jared nodded. “Love it even.”

“She needs a middle name too… all the other kids have middle names.”

“How about… Arya? Meaning noble goddess. Our baby could be a noble goddess, couldn’t you, sweet sweet girl?” Jared suggested.

“Danika Arya Padalecki. I like it- love it even.” You mocked Jared.

He let out a chuckle, “hi Danika.”

Danika looked up at Jared, her big and brown sparkling eyes looking deep into his soul. Those beautiful browns pulled him in and wrapped him around her little finger from the moment Dr. Churchill placed her in his arms. You rubbed your forehead as you lied back down. You were still nauseous and exhausted.

“I can’t wait to go home.” You groaned.

“That time will come soon enough, babe.” Jared smiled.

Jared leaned down and kissed your forehead as he placed the little girl in your arms.

“I’m going to run home and hop in the shower, Okay? Then I’ll pick the kids up. I’m sure they’re dying to meet their baby sister.” Jared chuckled.

“Yeah, I’m sure they are.” You smiled down at Danika.

It was about an hour later when Jared returned, three kids in tow.

“You guys have to be quiet, okay?” Jared warned. “Y/N and the baby could still be asleep.”

Tom creeped into the room and gave you a smile when he seen that you were awake.

“Y/N!” He exclaimed quietly. “Where’s the baby?”

“The baby is right here, silly.” You giggled.

“Woah! The baby’s so tiny I never saw it!”

“It’s a girl, Thomas.” Jared smiled. “Her name is Danika.”

“Dernikaaa?” Thomas repeated.

“No, Danika, buddy. We should’ve known the kids wouldn’t be able to say her name.” You looked up at Jared and shrugged.

“No! No! Y/N! I can say it!” Tom squealed.

“Thomas.” Jared warned. “Shhh.”

“I say it.” He whispered. “Danika.”

You kissed his forehead as if to say a silent good job. Shep was next to want to see the baby whereas Odette clung to her daddy. Danika remained asleep in your arms as Shep climbed onto the bed. He played with he little pink cap and looked up at you.

“She cute, Y/N. So cute.” Shep cooed, picking at her little fingers.

Danika stretched her hand open and grabbed ahold of Shep’s finger.

“Look daddy! Look, look, look.” He grinned.

“Hey! No fair! I want her to hold onto my finger too.” Thomas yelped.

“Shhhhh, Tom. It’s okay. Stick your finger out.” You guided his finger to Danika’s hand, hoping she’d grab it.

“She don’t like me, daddy. She like Sheppy because she holding onto Sheppy’s finger and not mine!”

“Thomas, she’s only a day old, I don’t think she knows the difference between you and Sheppy right now.” Jared explained. “Plus she’s asleep.”

“Yeah. I guess so.” Tom sighed.

“Odette, do you want to see your baby sister?” Jared asked.

Odette wrapped her arms tighter around Jared’s neck and screamed, “no!”

“Shhh, Odette.” Jared whispered, kissing her forehead.

“It’s like she knows.” You giggled. “She knows the baby is coming home with us.”

Odette was always a mommy’s girl when she was being breastfed, but since she’s been eating solid foods, she’s became more of a daddy’s girl whereas Danika was a daddy’s girl ever since she was in the womb.

“No baby, daddy.” Odette begged. “No baby.”

“But baby, Danika’s got to come home with daddy and mommy.”

“Noooooo! No momma no.” Odette squealed before letting a big sob out.

“Baby O, mommy can’t save you.” You rocked Danika as she started to fuss.

“Shhhh, Odette you’re being really loud, okay? You don’t have to go see the baby right now.” Jared rocked Odette too.

You were so excited to have your baby girl here, in the world with you. You knew it would be a challenge having Odette and Danika so close in age, but you were prepared to take on the challenge because you loved both of those little girls the same.

“John, these omelets are ready to go!” You loudly say in order to get the attention of your twin brother, who is helping out today. Glancing over you realize he’s talking to Peggy, your best friend/John’s girlfriend and you say even louder in a clearly teasing voice,

“Stop flirting with Peggy and get going!” John turns to you with a playful glare and grabs the food you were referring to and heads out of the kitchen. The brunch rush was pretty busy at the restaurant, but you and Peggy (your co-owner/manager) wouldn’t have it any other way. You and John moved to NYC, with the surprising support of your family.

You met Peggy through school and became her best friend instantaneously, and she yours. When John was introduced to her a few months after you initially met her, the chemistry was obvious and a relationship blossomed soon after. The three of you together started this restaurant about ten years ago and just started breaking even on it four years ago, turning a solid profit last year. Peggy’s and John’s managing skills have been recognized throughout the city, and your skills in the kitchen have been acknowledged numerous times and in different ways.

Running the Canary Cafe was a difficult task, and if definitely took a toll on your love life and personal health. It made you unwilling to leave the restaurant except to go home (even then it was because John or Peggy forced you to leave), and you certainly were never well rested. On the few times you did get out, you typically ended up sulking in a bar, frantically texting Leigh, your number two in the kitchen, about what was happening while you were gone.

Although, about nine years ago you met a man, had a one night stand due to the de-stressing need, and wound up pregnant. You never saw the man again, and it was probably for the best. Nine months after that you popped out Charlotte, your daughter. Your daughter was a change that was necessary. Before her, you would spend days without taking decent care of yourself. After her, your focus and self-care improved as you cared for Charlie.

Your normal routine was simple, wake up, wake up Charlotte, eat, take her to school, work. Typically John or Peggy would pick her up from school if you were in the middle of a rush, she would hang out in the restaurant doing homework until you both went home with carry out to have for dinner. Today, John had stepped in due to a server being sick but other than that the day had gone seamlessly- until your phone started ringing over and over again. Since it was your personal phone you ignored it.

“Y/N,” you hear Peggy say, grabbing your attention away from the stove.

“Yes, Peggy?”

“The phone, for you,” she reiterates, and hands the phone for the restaurant off to you after Leigh, your sous chef, takes over. You take a deep breath before speaking.

“Hello?”

“Ms. Laurens?” A kind, soft voice on the other side asked.

“This is she.” You replied, slightly annoyed to be interrupted and also worried your voice was showing it.

“Hello, ma’am. I’m Cara, a secretary at your daughter’s school. I’m calling because your daughter got into a fight with another student,” she says in a rush, like she’s uncomfortable with the situation.

“Wait, what?” Confusion is clear on your face, and your voice softens, which makes Peggy raise her eyebrow in worry.

“She… she punched a classmate. Broke her nose.”

“Charlotte? My introverted daughter who keeps to herself? Broke her classmate’s nose?” Peggy and John both widen their eyes, and glance at each other.

“That is the only fact we were able to ascertain, so far.”

“Oh my Lord,” your free hand goes into your hair, and you take another deep breath, trying to assess what to do. “Okay, Cara, I’ll be down there as soon as I can. Thank you so much for the call, and I’ll see you soon.”

Leigh catches your eye and nods, silently understanding that she’ll be acting as head chef for the next few hours.

“Peggy, I have to-” you start to explain,

“Go.”

Rushing down to the school, the entire commute took about 45 minutes from the restaurant. Walking into the main office you notice Charlotte in one corner, fidgeting with her hands, staring down. In the opposite corner is a young girl, Theodosia you guessed due to her nose being bandaged up. Her posture mirrored Charlotte’s exactly. You walk up to Cara who directs you through the door to Mr. Johnston, the principal. Striding past your daughter, you shoot her a small smile to let her know you weren’t absolutely furious at this point. She returned with a shy grimace, her normally bright brown eyes dulled and watery.

Mr. Johnston’s office was filled with two people already. You reach out and shake the principal’s hand.

“Ms. Laurens, glad you could make it.”

“Mr. Johnston. I apologize we were in the middle of the brunch rush.”

“I understand. Both Theodosia and Charlotte were served lunch while waiting for both of you to show up. Mr. Burr here just got away from his office ten minutes ago.” You turn your attention to Theodosia’s father, a man with dark skin, bright brown eyes, and dark hair shaved close to the head. His smile is soft and apologetic, and he extends his hand to shake yours.

“I’m Aaron Burr,” he states in a strong voice that doesn’t quite match his smile.

“I’m Y/N Laurens. Pleasure to meet you, although not the best circumstance.” Aaron lets out a chuckle in agreement. All three of you sit down, facing each other. Mr. Johnston starts to explain the situation at hand.

“From what Cara told both of you over the phone, the only fact we know is Charlotte punched Theodosia because of something that Theodosia said to her. They both started screaming at each other to cover up their own story, and Cara and I were unable to discern the truth. We thought we could have the two of you help, and then figure out the punishment.” You nod. Aaron suggests,

“Perhaps we can have them come in one at a time to explain their side so there are no interruptions?”

“That sounds doable,” you agree. “Should we start with your daughter or mine?”

“Let’s start with yours. Charlotte is her name?”

“Yeah, it’s Charlotte,” you respond, getting up to open the door and call her in. Charlotte walks in, her curly hair falling out of her ponytail. She stares at the ground while you pull up a chair for her.

“Hey Charmander. We called you in because we want to hear your explanation of what happened.” Charlotte doesn’t acknowledge at all. You push some of the hair out of her face and place your squat down a bit to be eye to eye. Trying again, you place your hand on her cheek carefully and suggest,

“How about I braid your hair while you tell us.” Your daughter makes eye contact and she nods her head, to imply yes. She sits down in the chair while you pull out the emergency brush you keep in your purse, and a hair tie. Separating a section of her hair into three parts, you start to plait her hair, Charlotte takes a deep breath and starts to explain.

“Today was the family tree presentation. I was talking about our family and I finished after discussing my great great grandparents. When I said I was done Theo raised her hand and started to tell the teacher that I shouldn’t get full credit because I didn’t include my father’s side of the family.”

“Did you try to tell her we don’t know about your father’s family or even have a picture of him?” You ask carefully, keeping accusations and anger out of your voice.

“Mhm!” She replies. “But she just kept going on and on about how it wasn’t complete because I just had a mom, not a dad. She wouldn’t listen and then she started going on about how I was a loser because I’m a loner and …. And I just lost it. I punched her, I can’t lie about that but I was provoked!” Charlotte’s voice got shakier as her story went on and by the time you finished her hair she was crying. You grab a tissue from Mr. Johnston’s desk and kneel down in front of your daughter, handing it to her. Putting on your best mom face on you grab her eye contact and in a hushed voice you croon,

“Charlotte. What you say Theo said to you isn’t okay. And I know you know what you did isn’t okay either. There are lots of kids who only have one parent, including some children in your class. And you keeping to yourself isn’t a bad thing- as long as it is your choice,” you emphasize, and she sniffles. “Now that we’ve heard your side of it we have to hear Theodosia’s side.” Charlotte whips her head to Mr. Johnston, and you reiterate, “It’s only fair.” She bows her head again, resigned, and wipes her face. Once the snot was cleared Charlotte gets out of her seat and walks out of the office, and Theodosia walks in. Aaron offers you his seat so the two of you can switch places but before you sit down, a timid voice, not unlike Charlotte’s, pipes up and inquires,

“Charlotte’s mommy?” you turn slowly towards the young girl and place a smile on your face.

“That’s me. I’m Y/N Laurens.”

“Mrs. Laurens?” She tries it out, her voice rising in pitch towards the end.

“Actually, Miss Theodosia, I’m not married. It’s just Miss. Or you could call me

Y/N, I’m good with that too.”

“Y/N?” Theodosia attempts, voice rising again.

“Yes?”

“I saw that you redid Charlotte’s hair.” This time her voice got quieter, and her small amount of confidence wavered.

“Yeah, I did. It was falling out and I was able to,” you admit. Theodosia’s gaze switches from you to the brush, and her hands hold onto her hair. Piecing the puzzle together, you propose carefully, to not intimidate her or scare her at all.

“Theodosia?” Her attention goes back to you. “Would you like me to braid your hair as well?” A small smile appears on her face as she nods furiously.

You end up braiding her hair while she tells her side of the story. It’s the exact same as Charlotte’s, and Theodosia admits that she (albeit unintentionally) provoked the punch. The entire time you interacted with his daughter, Mr. Johnston and Aaron let you handle the questions with the girls, both happy that you seemed to be successful with the conversation. Aaron, who took his original seat back, was mesmerized. Your unique way of interacting with his child and your own child made him smile despite the circumstance. By the end of it, both girls were in the office and apologizing to one another pretty genuinely from what you gathered. Charlotte and Theodosia waited in the main office while you finally sit down to face the two adults.

“So,” you begin. “Because it is Charlotte’s fault that Theodosia has a broken nose, I will definitely take care of any-”

“Oh that’s not necessary, Y/N. It was definitely a provoked and unfortunately well deserved punch.” He dismisses your offer with a wave of his hand, and a flash of a smile. His eye contact was striking, and easy to get lost in; almost unfathomable. Mr. Johnston speculates, breaking the small atmosphere between you and Aaron.

“I think a week suspension for each of them, plus they’ll be paired together for their next project. They’ll receive the instructions next week when they arrive back in class.” Mr. Johnston went on about the details of suspension. Both you and Aaron left at the same time, grabbing a hold of your respective daughter. Before he and Theodosia turned to walk in the opposite direction, you and Aaron said your goodbyes and he stated,

“I guess we’ll be seeing each other soon then, Y/N.”

The Elemental Experiments (A crappy fanfic I'm writing on FanFiction.Net)~ Chapter 1

All the students stared intensely at the clock, as if it was a ticking time bomb ready to explode once the period was over. As the teacher spoke and no one listened, all watched the minute hand slowly making it's way to the 6 while the hour hand was moving in between the 2 and the 3. Once the hand touched the 6, the bell rang. The room then erupted in talking and shuffling of papers and other supplies.

"Alright kiddos, remember to read pages 208 to 214 and answer the Section Assessment questions. These are due as soon as you walk into the door." Mr. L told the students, triggering a chorus of complaints and groans.

One student with blonde, slicked back hair and vibrant icy blue eyes shook his head as his classmates complained as if Mr. L gave them a 20 page report they had to do by tomorrow, not just seven textbook pages and five easy questions asking about minerals where the answers could be found in the text.

All the students flooded out into the hallway, rushing to their lockers with the eagerness to head home. As the blonde teen exited the room, two of his friends came strolling, or rolling in one's case, up to him.

"Hey Zane!" The caramel brown haired boy exclaimed as he rolled by on his new blue heelys that he got himself for Christmas.

"Greetings Jay and Cole." Zane responded, his thin lips forming a small smiled as he examined the two boys. Both were very sweaty because they just got back from gym, and Cole had his now longer hair in a bun and was already carrying his stuff since he stayed after for football. Jay on the other hand, even though he was clearly either too tired or lazy to change out of his gym clothes, but still had enough energy to act like his usual energetic self.

"Alright, heelys squad! Let's go!" Jay shouted, rolling away from Zane and Cole. Cole shook his head and followed Jay with Zane right behind. They both shook their head as some older students noticed Jay rolling through the hallway and soon glare at the other two.

"Oh come on guys! Don't put those heelys to waste!" Jay exclaimed before reaching his locker. Both Zane and Cole promised to at least wear the white and black heelys Jay bought for them, but neither of them ever took part of Jay's "Heely squad" during school hours,

"Woah, Jay, no need to embarrass yourself in front of the seniors... being a freshmen is bad enough." a spikey, brown haired teen with a red hoodie, who just reached Jay's locker, told Jay. His brown eyes hidden behind the black lenses of his sunglasses. Jay rolled his eyes as he and Zane opened their lockers and gathered their stuff.

"Oh shut the eff up Kai. I don't care what the seniors think of me, especially now. All I need to worry about is that damn Bio test coming up..." Jay started to trail off in the end. One thing most freshmen worried about was the upcoming Biology, or Living Environment, tests.

"Oh well, that's your problem... except the Bio part. Ugh, why couldn't I be in honors classes last year... lucky you Zane." Kai grumbled, tugging at his red backpack. Out of the group of friends, Zane had high enough grades to be in Biology in 8th grade, even though Jay was also qualified. Instead, Jay got put into the other honors course. Earth Science, which Zane had to take this year.

"Oh well. Any whoooooo, you guys wanna come over to my parents summer house? I need help setting up that halloween party for this Friday." Kai asked the other three. Unfortunately, all of them shook their heads.

"Got Football practice, then my dad is dragging me to dance classes."

"Nah fam, I need to study for Bio and got a book re- I mean, "literature analysis" for language arts."

"Sorry Kai, I wish I could... however, my father is actually going to be home for once. Echo wants me to spend time with them."

Kai let out a sigh and shrugged.

"Okay, totally understand. Maybe Lloyd or Skylor are free tonight..." Kai responded, before walking away. Jay then cleared his throat and said "Don't have too much fun Kai."

"With which one though?" Kai winked before disappearing into the crowd. Jay chuckled and shook his head as he closed his locker.

"Well, see you guys tomorrow. Zane, tell Dr. J and lil' Echo I said hi. Cole, have fun at practice and acting like a ballerina. Heelys squad OUT!" Jay said before rolling away, also disappearing into the crowd. Cole did a little face palm before walking the other direction to the gym.

"Bye Zane. Also tell Dr. Julien and Echo I said hi." Cole said and quickly waved goodbye before disappearing as well, leaving Zane alone. Zane shot Cole one last smile and then found his way outside. He headed towards the bike rack, grabbed his old white bike, and quickly made his way to the nearby middle school. He put his bike onto the bike rack and jogged over to the car loop. He searched through the few children until he found his copper brown haired brother in the crowd. Unfortunately, after many times of trying to get his brother's attention by waving at him, Zane soon resorted to yelling his name.

"Echo Julien!" Immediately, Echo turned towards him and sprinted through all the kids until he reached Zane, wrapping his arms around his thin waist.

"Big brother! I thought you forgot about me! You were 25 minutes later than usual..." Zane grabbed out his phone to check the time. Echo was right, he was super late this time. Probably standing around while Jay and Kai talked wasn't the best idea...

"Oh... um... sorry about that..." Zane rubbed the back of his head as Echo giggled.

"It's fine. Let's head home. Hopefully mean old Stepmother isn't home today..." Zane smiled as he lead Echo to the bike rack and Echo hopped onto Zane's bike, his arms around Zane's waist.

"Yeah... hopefully not..." Zane responded before he started pedaling towards home. Both boys didn't enjoy the woman their father decided to marry after Echo was born. Once Echo was born, their mother unfortunately died in child birth. Their father thought they still needed a mother figure to help out, especially since Dr. Julien would be at work until late at night. However, the woman he chose to marry, Elizabeth Snow, drives the boys insane.

Luckily, when the two reached the driveway, their stepmother's car was not present.

'Oh hallelujah...' both of them thought as they went inside the house. The house wasn't much, but it had just enough for the whole family. When they walked in, the smell of tea filled the whole house. Yep, their father was definitely home.

"Father!" Echo squealed as Dr. Julien exited the kitchen with a cup of tea in hand. The young Julien ran over to Dr. Julien and hugged him as tight as he could. A huge smile appeared on the older man's face as he hugged his son back, but only with one arm. Echo then soon let go of Dr. Julien and dragged Zane into a big group hug. Their father began to laugh as he held his sons close to him. After a minute, they soon released and questions began to flood out of his mouth.

"So, did you discover anything new? Any new inventions? Did anything explode? What project are you and Borg working on now? Are the coffee machines fixed yet? Did anyone d-" Zane covered Echo's mouth before he could finish the last question. Dr. Julien started to chuckled.

"Oh you are so precious. But, I can't release any information about my projects yet." Dr. Julien said, booping Echo on the nose. The soon to be 12 year old tried to use his puppy eye strategy, but it had no effect on Dr. Julien.

"Well, no more talk about the lab. It's family time." Dr. Julien told the two boys, picking up Echo and carrying him to the dining room table where a game of clue was set up. Then, from there, the three played a couple rounds of clue until they heard a car pulling into the drive way. When the headlights shone through the front window, Zane and Echo scrambled to their rooms and worked on their homework while Dr. Julien quickly cleaned up the game before his wife opened the front door.

"Hello honey." The two overheard Dr. Julien say quickly to Elizabeth as she set her bag down on the now cleared dining room table. Soon enough, the parent's voices became muffled and quieter so Echo nor Zane could hear what they are now arguing about this time.

Both sigh as Echo goes into Zane's room and works in there until Dr. Julien came in, a frown on his face. He sighed before telling Echo to leave for a second so he can speak to Zane alone. Zane and Echo exchanged confused looks before Echo obeyed, closing the door right behind him. Many questions raced through the blonde's mind. Usually his father did this after his stepmother told him something about Zane.

"Son..." Zane was ready to hear it. All this school year, he has been avoiding home. He knows he's strange and doesn't fit in, nothing Dr. Julien could say could change other's opinions. Everyone thinks he's depressed. Everyone makes fun of him. What could Dr. Julien try to tell Zane about this time?

"You care about Echo... correct?" Zane's heart skipped a beat. Such a strange question...

He nodded slowly. Dr. Julien grabbed out a small leather journal and stared intensely at it, like the students in Zane's Earth Science class at the end of the day.

"Zane... promise to me... if I'm ever gone, make sure you are always there for Echo. Keep him safe, and always be careful. And..." He pointed at the cover of the journal.

"Find this journal. No matter what happens. Echo and this journal should be your first priority..." Dr. Julien tells him with a stern voice. Zane can clearly see the fear in his eyes, yet his whole face was not showing any clear emotions from what he could observe. His stomach felt like it was in a knot, his mind was spinning as it tried to figure out the reason for this conversation. Although, Zane just nodded and acted like he understood. Then, Dr. Julien put the journal back from where he got it and left the room. Fear and confusion filled Zane's body as he went back to his homework. His brain was trying to wrap around what he was talking about.

These thoughts continued to swarm in his mind even when he decided to try to go to sleep.

"Find this journal. No matter what happens. Echo and this journal should be your first priority..."

This property is HOA-Free.

This is a long one, because it involves a growing escalation of actions. TLDR at the bottom. Some terms are translated because I don't live in an English-speaking country.

We moved houses last year, to the ugliest in the street. The previous owners must have loved Mondriaan, because the front was red/blue/yellow in window frames and door. One paint job, many thankful neighbors and several months later, I get an invitation to a voluntary "Collective of inhabitants", the terms read like an opt-in HOA that you can never leave. A long list of restrictions, and no benefits? No thanks.

Random home improvements continue, the backyard gets remodeled, some overgrown trees get cut down (free firewood for the BBQ!) etc. etc. Then I get a letter from the city. Apparently, I cut down a tree without a permit and they're sending someone to assess the damage. This is a little shocking, as I work with permits for a living and did some proper research before I changed anything, so I give the city a call. Nope, there's no such thing as a permit for tree removal on private property, and nobody in city hall sent this letter printed on city hall letterhead. In fact, that's not even a proper tracking number. They even sent by an arborist to assess the damage, who I refused. And later I got the bill for the arborist, which I kept but didn't pay. A phone call confirmed that the arborist didn't send me the bill, but for privacy reason who couldn't name who did.

When the DIY is finished and I'm moved in, I hold an introduction BBQ for my street. I go invite people and bring a cupcake with the "there shall be a grand feast, all are welcome" stuff on a little note, to make friends with the neighbors. I had already scored major credit by raising their property value with a single paint-job, so I was pretty happy. A few people tell me I can't have a BBQ, because it's against the rules of the "Collective of Inhabitants". I tell them not to worry, I'm not in that. The next day, I get a bill for membership to the "Collective of Inhabitants". This mysterious organization sends out bills without contact info, so I shred it.

Come the day of the BBQ. At 4pm, my doorbell rings. Someone in an official-looking city-hall uniform, and a "city-supervisor" (basically a not-quite-cop who took night school instead of police academy). They heard I'm having an illegal BBQ, and are here shut it down. I ask if they would like to point out which laws I am breaking. Uniform-man (UM) pulls out a 60+ page slab of paper and points out a rule saying it's illegal to burn anything for any reason in your backyard. The book is labelled "Collective of Inhabitants LAWS AND RULES". The city-supervisor (FC, for Fake-cop) just stands there smirking.

me: "That's very nice, but I'm not part of that group, so I don't see how that applies to me." UM: "The rules apply to everyone in this street." me: "Yeah... no they don't. You can't just go around inventing laws. Could I have a copy of that book please?"

I take the sheave of paper and toss it onto a table for future reference.

FC: "So I take it you won't have the BBQ?" me: "oh no. I'm having the BBQ, and I'm going to make it my personal mission to break another rule every time you bother me. So far, I'm 2 down, and 3 to go." UM: "This is against the law! I'll be calling the cops" me: "no, this is against your rules, not the law. And that's 4." FC: "Ma'am if you don't comply, you'll be placed under arrest!" Me: "Ohhhh yes. Shall we call the actual police right now? I wonder who's in the right here..."

I take out my phone and call the non-emergency number. Of course, I'm on hold.

UM: "That's not necessary, you haven't heard the last of this."

They walk away and I hang up.

me: "That's five! Have a nice day!"

The neighbors start showing up, and point out that's the president of the "Collective", and jokingly ask which heinous crimes I committed. I tell them I did nothing wrong because I'm not in the group. That's when my introductory BBQ turned into a torrent of complaints about about the "Collective".

So, during my hello-neighbors BBQ, I got to hear all the horror stories. Leave your trashcan at the street after 8am? Get a fined. Put it out before 10pm? fined. Have a BBQ? fined. Paint your house late? Fined. the list went on. for 6 hours people did nothing but bitch about the CoI, noting that none of the active members were present at this highly illegal party!

As it turns out, my house was the only one in the street not in the CoI, and I had two other bastions of freedom in the next street. Well, I had just moved in, and I owed the CoI another 4 infractions, so I was open to suggestions. Three of my neighbors were extremely fed-up, and seized on this opportunity, perfectly willing to inconvenience themselves to be assholes to the CoI. It turns out this bullshit had been going for about 6 years.

So here's a little tally of actions, none quite Pro-Revenge till the end.

1 - Trashcan are to be placed by the curb no sooner than 10pm and removed no later 8am. Suddenly, I gained 17 trashcans, which I graciously allowed the other people to use, and even keep near their houses for convenience. However, should someone accidentally leave my trashcan at the pickup point, nobody can be fined. 3 infractions to go.

2 - Due to terrible wording, it is not allowed for CoI members to organize a party outside after 9pm. I was suddenly extremely outgoing. I organized at least one party every other week, going so far as to use other people's backyards for them. Being a terrible host, I wasn't present for most of the parties I organized. 2 infractions to go.

3 - I suddenly became a pet owned. After one of the neighbors was told dogs are not allowed to weigh over 10kg, I became the proud owner (that is to say, the dog still belonged to him in every way, except for the CoI) of a Great Dane. I really only saw the dog when it's ownercaretaker too him on walks, but still. 1 infraction to go, it had to be a good one

4 - I get a call from a debt collection agency. I failed to pay my CoI bill on time. I had to pay (some tiny amount) plus a big fine. I ask tell them that if they can provide me with proof of a contract, I'll gladly pay. They promise to get back to me. 2 infractions to go!

5 - Since all major garden work had to be done contracted to a "registered gardener", my husband started a one-man gardening business, since "registered" wasn't defined anywhere, we opted for a 12-euro entry in the phone book (yes, they still exist!). Business was lousy though, he only ever took jobs that landed him 0 profit, even though the subcontracted labor wasn't profitable, he always managed to find local workers willing to take the job, generally they lived in the very house where the work was to take place, talk about good management! 1 infraction left to go.

6 - Debt collection agency send me a letter. With a copy of a contract signed by me. Well, signed by someone who used my husbands last name and my first letter, which is rather odd, since I never took his last name. I was about to rip it up when I realized that forging a signature is an actual crime! HURRAY! I call the debt collection agency, explain that that's not my signature, email them my real signature and they drop it after some back and forth and another in-person visit.

Now, unfortunately, I'm not a lawyer. Fortunately, one of my new neighbors IS, and he was extremely motivated. So, with charges of Fraud, harassment and a slew of others, we went to court. It took all of 10 minutes after reading the evidence. Basically, we had a good case (because we had a lawyer), and the board of the CoI, who was defended by the president (a professional manicurist) went "Look at the rules she broke. There's this rule, and this one, and this one..." to which the judge simply replied "But you forged her signature. She's not a member." "But she broke SO MANY RULES". Repeat twice more and bang the gavel.

The CoI was fined a pittance, and ordered to pay a ton of damages to me and one other non-member. Of course, since this wasn't actually a HOA, they didn't have much, and were thus forced to disband, with the (unfortunately small) fine falling to the board members.

Thus endeth the Collective of Inhabitant, and there was much rejoicing. My only regret is that I still had another infraction I wanted to commit.

TL;DR: Fake-HOA is convinced I'm part of it when I'm not. Assisted my neighbors by breaking as many rules as possible, finally got them disbanded by suing for fraud over a forged signature on their contract.

Call Of Duty: WWII, Mission 1: Hands

*Special Missions Due to My Loyal Followers*

A clap of thunder shook the coms shack hard as pouring rain hit the window of the dimly lit room.  Charlotte was sitting on the cot wearing what amounted to pajamas watching the rain.  It had been raining for two full days since the Battle of Abel making runs near impossible.  The Major agreed that it would be safer to just suspend all runs until the rain let up.  Sam was currently going through the archieves to clean up the coms shack due to Janine's less than gentle prodding.  He had been working for over 2 hours going through file after file leaving Charlotte to clean up their area and read over some of the magazines they managed to find while on runs.

She stood up and padded out to his desk where he had his oversized headphones on as he listened to missions taking down notes and other things for Janine.  Charlotte walked over gently wrapping her arms around his neck.  She looked down seeing him looking more serious than what she had seen him as before.

She gently lifted one of his headphones away.  “Sammy?  What's wrong?”  She asked softly making Sam hit the space bar and sigh heavily.

“Brunswick...”  Sam said softly.

Charlotte felt her stomach tighten before she  tightened her head on him.  “How much of it?”

Charlotte shook her head as she continued to run heading for Brunswick.  She began to notice a little bit of a change in herself since she came to Abel.  She would look foreward to going onto runs simply to talk to Sam.  Running with the others was ok but when it was just Sam she felt at ease.  She started hoping that she would be on runs with just Sam so he could focus on her.

She kept her distance mostly due to the fact that she was still unsure if her fiance was still alive, dead or undead.  

She did have to admit that it was difficult to ignore the feeling she got when she was around him.

“And be careful.  Those supplies you're carrying could be a lifeline for Brunswick.  If you lose that backpack, don't bother coming back.”  Janine said seriously.

Charlotte slipped behind a tree looking up feeling her anger starting to come up.  “Really?”  She whispered.  “Again with that?”

“And uh, yeah, so cheery goodbye from me, too!  You'll be out of broadcast range soon.  When you see Brunswick, head for the east building.  That's where the locals should be holed up.  Good luck.”  Sam said as the transmission faded out.  Charlotte continued to slip through the trees keeping quiet and away from the zoms as much as she could.  After another hour the static was even louder.  “Don't know if you can hear me, but it looks like you made it through that line of zoms.  Good work. You should be able to see Brunswick below you now.”

“Runner Five,one more thing.  The most vital thing of all.  Getting to Brunswick is only half the job. If I know Mr. Jones, he'll want to assess your suitability for certain tasks.  And if you're useful, he may well give you an item to bring back with you.  If he does, you must treat it with extreme respect.  Do you understand me?  Extreme respect.”  Janine stressed.

“You made that extremely clear.” Charlotte hissed as she ran.

“Come on Janine lighten up a little bit.  Five knows how important this is.”  Sam said confidently.

Janine signed heavily.  “I know some people find your levity amusing, Mr. Yao, but I find that morale is best maintained by keeping people alive.  Which means treating serious matters seriously.”

Top of the group by two points, unbeaten in five games, the Republic of Ireland’s qualifying campaign is going swimmingly. But they could still flounder: their two remaining games after this one are against Switzerland (in Geneva on Tuesday) and at home to Denmark, the two other teams competing for final berths. Crucially however those two play in Copenhagen today, making this one final and fantastic opportunity for the Irish to put daylight between themselves and their pursuers. Today’s results will not be definitive, but they could come close: should Ireland win today and Denmark lose, Mick McCarthy will know that a draw in his side’s final home game, or a win in either of their final two fixtures, would be enough.

But let’s not get carried away. Ireland last visited Tbilisi just over two years ago, when they were held to a 1-1 draw in World Cup qualifying, and though they have beaten Georgia at home in this qualifying campaign and their last, on both occasions the score was 1-0. In Georgia’s most recent qualifier, in Tbilisi last month, they held Denmark to a goalless draw. “We must play like we did against Denmark, but we need more quality in the attacking area,” said Vladimir Weiss, their manager. “We hope we will score first, and for the first time in history I hope we can beat Ireland. But we must play at 120%, to play at 100% is not enough.”

The build-up has been illuminated by some entertaining dancing-related repartee between the managers, with Weiss saying that Ireland “play with phenomenal energy, just like Michael Flatley dances. There are good dancers in Georgia too, but he’s very special.” When McCarthy was told about this assessment he paused to think for a while before settling on being very pleased. “When someone describes you as someone who is as brilliant as Michael Flatley, such a wonderful performer and dancer, and a good guy, actually, I’ll take that as a huge compliment of my team,” he beamed.

1.       Hello everyone. In the first four weeks of this course we explored the role of non-visual senses in design and its impact on our memories and habitus.  Expanding on the lectures and the reading, our team conducted an interview and an experiment focusing on the sense of hearing and sonic design.

 2.       While visual aesthetics is a significant aspect of design, great design judgement results from considering multi-sensory experiences. Sensations cannot be immediately observed, yet they may evoke positive memories of embodied experiences, which in turn facilitate the sense of belonging and security within the space.

 3.       It is challenging to assess how multisensory design may trigger memories, as it resonates with deeply personal experiences. What may seem a secure space for one, can activate traumatic memories for the other. Therefore, thorough design judgement is critical when it comes to sensory design.

 4.       Sonic design may contribute to the sense of social belonging  and the feeling of being out of place. Deliberate amplification of acoustics in grand traditional libraries construct restrictive modes of behaviour, while modern, transparent, and light spaces invite social behaviours.

 5.       Yet, the understanding of an inviting space varies according to an individual’s habitus and upbringing. For example, being an only child, Valeriya finds open plan study spaces unsettling, while as I grew up with multiple siblings, I can easily concentrate despite the noise.  

 6.       The eye of the Skin promotes the inclusion of all five senses in the art of shaping buildings. Instead of creating embodied and lived existence in the world, many buildings today focus solely on the visual image. Today's technological and consumer culture has detached and suppressed our senses, restricting our experience.

 7.       Beyond the obvious exterior of an architectural building, “The experience of a home is structured by distinct activities – cooking, eating, socialising, reading, sleeping,” and intimate acts. Our experience of the world is formulated by a combination of all five senses, leaving impressions on the body, imprinting us with knowledge.

 8.       Architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright are strengthening the sensory experience with materiality, texture, weight, density of space and materialised light. Breaking the boundaries and designing spaces where you’re not merely the spectator but where you belong.

 9.       Juhani highlights the importance of senses in architecture and invites to directly address the entire body to create a full experience. But what happens if you have a sensory loss? We’ve interviewed a deaf person to see how they perceive and inhabit space, as the acoustic sense is often marginalised in architecture.

 10.   This is my friend Jeremy. Jeremy lives in a complete absence of sound ever since he was born, and we were interested to find out which places he finds peaceful or disturbing,  his reaction to crowded spaces, which senses evoke the strongest memory flashes, and how can deaf –friendly design be improved.

 11.   Being surrounded by nature is Jeremy’s concept of a peaceful atmosphere, as he loves admiring its beauty and the sensation of submerging in cool water. Surprisingly Jeremy still flinds crowded places uncomfortable, not due to the buzzing noise, but due to the restriction of movement.

 12.   Jeremy’s dominant sense is vision, but smell has a great power in evoking instant flashes of memories and in contributing to the homely atmosphere. As Jeremy heavily relies on sight when navigating, darkness terrifies him, and being in a tunnel or experiencing power outages can be rather traumatic.

 13.   Jeremy’s most interesting suggestions on deaf friendly design include: Couches should always be against the wall to avoid the fear of something creeping out from behind, wider corridors that allow plenty of space to converse in sign language, and improved lighting that minimises eye fatigue.

 14.   To further understand how deaf people perceive the world, we conducted a walk tour experiment while wearing noise cancelling earphones and earplugs. We visited quiet QCA campus on weekend, peaceful parklands, as well as high traffic Grey Street and crowded City Beach. Here is our video.

 16.    I found not being around the crowded pool disturbing, as I felt insecure not hearing what people are talking about, it seemed like they were laughing at me. And although I initially felt peaceful in the absence of sound, I got scared when people suddenly appeared passed me, as I did not hear them coming.

 17.   Although not having hearing since birth and temporarily losing it for an hour is completely different, we feel like my fear of sudden appearance of people resonates with Jeremy’s fear of something creeping up from behind. It is clear that sound’s role in space and navigation is significantly underestimated.

 18.   Washington DC’s  Gallaudet University based the design of their buildings on the sensory experience of those who don’t hear. The space corresponds with Jeremys feedback on deaf-friendly design.  Classrooms are orientated in a semi-circle or a U space to enable continuous visual connection among class mates.

 19.   Wider hallways, stairwells or ramps allow two people to communicate in sign language while walking. Diffused lighting, blues and greens colouring reduce eye strain, while reflective surfaces notify students when someone is coming up behind, creating a more effective and comfortable environment for a deaf person.

 20.   Overall, our case study, Jeremy’s interview and the soundproofing experiment supported the theories explored in lectures and in the reading. We gained a deeper understanding of the senses and their crucial role in special experience. As future designers, we hope to redirect interior design from visual dominions towards multisensory environments.
