Modern!Steddie (This is based on something I read a while back on Tumblr about Eddie becoming famous, Steve getting doxxed, and years later singing Hozier's Francesca to Eddie. Steve has always been one of the popular kids, but not the kind of childish villains you see in movies. No, he was popular because he was handsome, had rich parents, was charismatic, and was good at sports. He didn't bully other kids, but he wasn't interested in them either.

He never felt the need to seek out new connections at school, because he'd had Tommy and Carol for years, and anyone new who wanted to talk to him would come to him. He didn't have to work hard to make new friends.

His time was spent on sports and the friends he already had. The occasional girlfriend, too, because he'd always been a romantic at heart and a lonely kid. Being best friends with a couple would also make him feel like a third wheel a lot, so having a girlfriend and double dates seemed cool.

Then he got into a fight with Tommy and Carol after that graffiti episode in the movies and they drifted apart. Tommy wasn't mean about it, but he was resentful and hostile, because they were best friends and it always sucks to lose a friend to a boyfriend/girlfriend who you think cheated on them.

After a year, when he and Nancy broke up, he, Tommy and Carol didn't get back together, but they weren't hostile, you could tell they felt bad for him. Steve wanted to be friends with them again, he just didn't feel right crawling back with his tail between his legs and he also felt guilty that they never reconnected before. He didn't want it to seem like he only got back together because he was single.

He's still popular, but now his best friends aren't around anymore and he got cheated on by his girlfriend, but he feels like he deserved it (let's just say the story they made up about Barbara dying was real and the trauma grew into a monster and consumed their entire relationship). So he feels alone.

He has the kids. But Dustin thinks he's awesome and he doesn't want to be anything less, Lucas also sees him as a hero, willing to take a beating for him, Max looks up to him as a big brother. Will is Jonathan's brother and has traumas, so Steve would never dump his problems on the kid. Mike is Nancy's brother.

All of his real friends are kids.

So, Eddie. Steve isn't lonely around school, he still interacts with other students, he's friendly with the popular crowd, a lot of people like him. He just has these moments where he seems sad and then suddenly he seems super chill again.

Anyone who looks closely can tell he's got a problem and pretends not to, but it's not obvious. Eddie doesn't think much of it at first. He actually finds it amusing, because he has a lot of shallow and superficial ideas about popular kids who conform to the norm and who are well-off.

Eddie comes over when he sees Steve reading a DnD rulebook. He mocks it a bit, but explains a few things and Steve, who has always been a social butterfly and never cared much about sitting at the same table as some group in the cafeteria, sits down with Hellfire.

Not with the intention of being their friend, just because he wanted to ask them questions, take notes and move on with his life. A brief connection, a friendly interaction. No different from his relationship with most people who are part of his social circle.

But Eddie keeps pulling him closer, invites him to join the Hellfire Club. Steve declines, because he likes the stories and wanted to learn about DnD because of the kids, but he feels insecure about being a player, about roleplaying, he's afraid of making the wrong decisions and ruining something that seems to be so important to their friends (both the kids and Eddie).

Eventually, they fall in love.

Steve graduates without much distinction and Eddie barely makes it, but they are free from high school. While Eddie continues to play concerts at the Hideout with the CC boys, Steve works at Scoops Ahoy and makes friends with Robin.

So, when Eddie decides to leave, Steve asks them to wait a little, to save up more money, to get better organized. If they stayed for a whole year, Robin could even leave with them. When Eddie doesn't agree, he says they can continue their relationship long-distance. After all, it's 2010 and there's technology for that.

Eddie leaves anyway, believing that Steve will regret it and look for him, understand that leaving is the right choice and blah blah blah. Steve can't leave yet, because if he moves out, if he doesn't follow the path his parents have laid out, he'll give up any illusion of family he might have had. His car is in his father's name, he doesn't have much savings, he's still not open about being bisexual and he's terrified of leaving his entire life behind. It's hard in Hawkins, but facing the whole world, the uncertainty, not having a home to go back to… It scares him. Eddie doesn't understand, because if nothing else worked out for him, he could go back to Wayne and be welcomed with open arms.

One of Eddie's first hit songs is about a preppy, popular, charismatic kid who's the captain of the swim team and lives in Loch Nora who starts dating him in his senior year and gets stuck in a shitty job at the mall. It's easy to figure out who Steve is. People at school find out quickly.

I like to think Carol is the one who alerts him, goes to his job to tell him the rumors. Tommy goes with her. Although Carol is kinder and more open and Tommy keeps his distance, as if he might be infected, he also tells Steve to be careful, for old times' sake.

Either way, he becomes a target. The students tell their parents that they believe the hit song is about Steve. This story even gets around the church that his parents donate to and "attend" when they're around. His parents' friends find out. His business partners find out. His parents, too.

His parents suddenly move back home. It was a huge fight, with his mother accusing him of being possessed, suggesting a treatment to "cure" him. Mr. Harrington said it was due to a lack of beatings. Either way, it ended with him bleeding alone in the street.

A few days later, he and Robin managed to return to "steal" some of his belongings back, including documents. Other than that, he lost everything.

Mr. Wheeler didn't even want him to get close to Mike anymore.

For a while, he spends his days between the Hendersons' couch and Robin's bedroom floor, feeling like shit and listening to the music Eddie wrote over and over again.

After that, he sells his cell phone, his laptop, whatever he managed to keep. Robin also sells some of her things and the kids help with this small fundraising, selling cakes and sweets. Even Tommy and Carol seek them out, providing almost 50% of the money. That way, Steve is able to leave with a few months' rent saved.

Wayne also helped, because he knew that Eddie's music was responsible for this. Steve told him never to talk about everything that happened with Eddie, so Wayne kept it a secret.

I think Tommy, Carol and Steve could get back to being friends. Not the same as before, but they have lunch together every few months and they were the ones who helped Steve get a job in a new city.

A few months later, Corroded Coffin is well established, about to release its first album. Robin goes to college and Steve and she move in together.

That's when other people start to find out who Steve is too. It starts with a post on Reddit, people speculating about him, which is the central theme of several songs, although none are as explicit about his identity as the first. His parents receive some hate mail, they make a point of sending it to the Buckleys and Steve finds out. What hurts the most is knowing that his parents never gave him any of his belongings, but they found a way to let him know that people he didn't even know hated him.

He gets some hate messages too, because, although he deleted his old accounts, the new ones are easy to find through the profiles of people who knew him before all this. So, they're probably students from school, people know what Robin's social networks are, finding him.

There isn't much hate coming his way because he's careful to keep to the shadows, and thankfully the speculation about Steve Harrington being responsible for breaking Eddie Munson's heart doesn't go that far, after all, there's nothing to keep fueling those theories.

One of the things that connected Eddie to Steve was music. I like to think of Steve as a musician, like Joe Keery is. If Eddie can pour out his anger through music, he can also pour his heart into it. He writes Unknown/Nth and posts it to an anonymous YouTube account. He sings with an acoustic guitar, without showing his face.

For a while, this feels like closure.

Steve still gets hate mail sometimes, even though he deletes the old accounts and creates new ones. Everyone in Hawkins seems to know about him and Eddie. The kids, who hated Eddie for a while, have reluctantly started to admire him again. Steve reassured them about this, but they all remained bitter about everything that happened.

Steve, for his part, has vacillated between hating Eddie and hating himself. Most of the time, he still feels like he maybe loves Eddie a little bit, as if he’s stuck on that last day they saw each other. Sometimes he blames himself for making the wrong decision. Other times he thinks that if he hadn't stayed in Hawkins, Eddie might never have made it big.

His feelings for Eddie are complicated.

So, about 5 years after the breakup, there's a documentary about the beginning of Corroded Coffin. Something not produced by them. Maybe by a fan? Who goes to Hawkins, talks to people, tells them about Steve, exposes Steve and it goes viral on social media.

His life goes to shit very quickly. Eddie doesn't even notice at first, because CC is on a world tour and they never have free time. Meanwhile, Steve becomes well-known on social media and gets some hate mail.

Things change a bit when someone, seeing old photos of Steve, posts on Reddit that they have a crazy theory: there's a song they've been listening to for years, that's a lost gem in the depths of YouTube and they swear that's Steve Harrington, because the moles match and you can see a Hawkins High jacket in the background. It's a pretty crazy theory, so it doesn't get much attention, but the song gains momentum.

Eddie finds out because, once he learned everything that happened, he started researching everything about Steve, trying to measure how much he ruined his life.

Assuming people find out that the song is really about Eddie, I think he could become the target of hate, almost as much as Steve did, because Unknown/Nth is a powerful song.

That's what I've thought, for now. They get back together in the end because Eddie's actions had terrible consequences, but he never meant to hurt Steve like that and the biggest culprits for everything that happened are his parents. The hate from the fans wasn't that intense until the documentary, so it was hard to notice.

Anyway, they have a long way to go. A talk to clear up their last fight, a lengthy apology from Eddie, reconnecting with the kids, getting back to being friends.

It would be terribly sad and difficult. It definitely wouldn't be a fairy tale, but they could learn to trust each other. Eddie could earn Steve's trust, affection, and friendship, and one day they could be a couple again.

Dustin was the first to figure out that Eddie and Steve were dating, and the funny part? They hadn’t even begun dating at that point.

Dustin had been close with the both of them long enough to understand how they acted around people they were attracted to; Eddie liked physical contact, always brushing shoulders or knees with the object of his affections. Steve, on the other hand, stared. He would stare and admire and smile and observe. Dustin saw both sides, and came to the assumption that they were together already.

He realized his assumption was wrong while helping Eddie set up for their DND session at Steve’s house (Dustin volunteered Steve; he had the biggest house, it was the easiest option).

Eddie and Dustin had snuck into Steve’s house at about 8 am, trying their bests to be quiet considering Steve appeared to be asleep. This all went down the drain when Eddie and Dustin began squabbling over something simple, both of them getting louder and louder, to the point they woke Steve up.

Steve came stumbling down his staircase, eyes squished shut to hide from the sun, white tee shirt riding up his chest as he scratched at his side and dark blue and white checkered boxers hugging his thighs, clearly a little tight for boxers. Eddie shut up within seconds, face turning shades of red as he stared at Steve with wide eyes. Dustin hid the half naked Steve from his vision.

“God, man, put some clothes on,” Dustin said, and Steve scoffed.

“You’re in my house, Henderson. Deal with it. Fuck, you two are early as shit. Did you pick up Dustin?” Dustin, after a second, realized that Eddie was being spoken to, and glanced at Eddie, who was still staring, seemingly completely oblivious to Steve’s question. Dustin kicked Eddie in the shin.

“Fuck! What?” Steve snorted a laugh, dragging his hand through undone hair, only distracting Eddie a little more.

“Did you pick up Dustin?”

“Yeah. The little shit left trash in my van again,” Eddie teased affectionately, ruffling Dustin’s hair and hat around a little. Dustin grinned slightly. Steve smiled, watching Eddie with admiration. Dustin, who was used to this pining by now, didn’t notice it much.

“Well. I guess I’ll get up now. Do you two want breakfast?”

“God, Harrington, you can’t cook-”

“Yes. Yes, please,” Eddie interrupted. Dustin gave him a look. Steve smiled gently and walked back up the stairs.

“God, can you two wait to be domestic until y’all actually live together?” Dustin grumbled, tugging the edge of a cloth to straighten it.

“I’m- what?” Eddie asked, brows furrowed in evident confusion. Dustin blinked.

“You and Steve. I’m pretty sure the entirety of Hellfire knows you two are dating by now.” Eddie flushed a bright red, shoulders tightening up.

“We aren’t dating!” he defended, voice pitching. Dustin snorted.

“Sure.”

“Seriously, Henderson. Not dating,” Eddie said, mumbling by the end of it. Dustin took that, turning to stare.

“You’re serious?” Eddie hummed and glanced at his watch, then glanced at the wall clock. “Dude. No way you two aren’t dating. He obviously likes you back.”

“Dustin, don’t meddle,” Eddie warned, and before Dustin could continue, Mike entered, an anxious Will entering behind him. Eddie grinned at the new member of the party, approaching instantly.

“Is this the famous Will the Wise I’ve heard so much about?” Eddie boasted, slightly pushing Mike. Mike huffed a laugh, and Will smiled, rubbing the back of his neck. Dustin saw Steve at the steps, and followed him into the kitchen.

“Harrington. Harrington. Steve!”

“Mm? Yeah?” Steve asked, turning as if his name hadn’t been repeated thrice now.

“Dude. You like Eddie.” Steve turned red.

“I do not.”

“You do too!”

“What makes you think that?” Steve asked, turning the stove on.

“Dude! You stare at him, incessantly. It’s kind of annoying at this point honestly, even I’m not that obsessed with Susie. You smile at him with that dork ass smile of yours and you make those shitty jokes that have worked on no one in the history of never, and Eddie always laughs at them, not because you’re particularly funny, but because he thinks you’re a fucking dork, because you are, and laughs because he definitely likes you too,” Dustin rambled. Steve blinked a bit, staring at Dustin.

“You think?”

“Dude, I know! Sure, sure, the guy’s kinda touchy with everyone, but not as much as he is with you. Good lord, he always sits next to you and he laughs at all your jokes and he calls you ‘princess’ all the time, Harrington are you dense?” Steve stared some more. Dustin blinked before rubbing his temples. “You’re hopeless dude. Absolutely hopeless.”

A week later, Dustin is pulled away from some code he was toying with by incessant knocking on his front door.

“Dusty can you get it?! Im making cookies and my hands are all greasy!”

“Of course, Mom!” Dustin called before making sure his code wouldn’t disappear and running downstairs to shut up the knocking. He yanked the door open, met with Eddie’s fist, which almost connected with his face before Eddie jumped.

“Henderson!”

“Munson!” Dustin returned with mock enthusiasm. “What are you doing pounding on my door at seven at night?? It’s dark out. Aren’t you working today-”

“Steve asked me out. Steve Harrington asked me out.”

“Yeah, Ed, Theres only one Steve that we both know and it’s Steve Harrington, oh my lord,” Dustin heaved before Eddie shook Dustin’s shoulders.

“He asked me out, Dustin!”

“Good! The world itself is exhausted with watching you two pine for each other.” Eddie’s face flattened.

“You need to bring the attitude down a few notches.”

“You need to bring your crush down a few notches.”

“Oh my god. Be happy for me.”

Summary: You have been deem the title of Hellfire Mom since you were a sophomore. Even after starting your own little family with your fiancé Eddie, you still make sure your extended family gets fed and loved.

A/N: I kinda want to make this into a series. Talking about how Eddie and reader met and little things like that. Would you peeps want that? 

Warnings: Use of Y/N, horrible writing, mentions of sex but not really, fluff, Eddie just being in love with his family.

It was Friday, Hellfire Day. You always had Fridays off for that exact reason. Hellfire. You spent the day cooking and baking for your boys, the other family. You always had the mother instinct in you. You love the idea of having a family. It came a little too soon, people would say, but it was worth it. You and Eddie have been dating since freshman year and decided to wait till Prom your senior year to lose your virginity together. Well, the condom broke, because said condom was from freshman year, and boom you were pregnant. Yes, you got stares and were that talk of the town “she is having the freaks baby” “he will probably sacrifice her and the baby” but you both ignore them. Then on a chilly day in mid-January baby girl Munson was born, Stella Munson. She’s beautiful, she has Eddie’s big brown eyes, his curly brown hair other than that she was your mini me......Speaking of your mini me she should be getting up from her nap soon. 

Right on Que you hear her little feet on the wooded floor. “Well hello baby how did you sleep” “Good” she said in her sweet small voice. “That good baby” “Up mommy” she gave that puppy dog face and grabbing hands and you caved immediately. “You ready to see daddy, and all of your uncles” “DADDY” oh yea she was a big daddy’s girl. “Ok let me finish up dinner and then we will get ready to go” “I watch Belle” “Yes you can watch Belle while I finish” Beauty and the Beast is her favorite movie. On tonight's menu, your family was having fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, homemade biscuits, and your famous homemade cookies. As you finished packing up dinner for your family, you got Stella ready, and all bundled up then headed to the car. 

You pulled into the school Stella squealed, Eddie was waiting by his van with a smile. “DADDY” you rolled down her window“My star how are you babygirl” “I good daddy” Eddie opened your door and helped you out of the car, then got Stella out and her “Hellfire backup” which has toys and things for coloring. You walked in hand in hand to the drama room and started to set up the table with the food. “Ooo what did make for us today love-” *gasp* “You made your cookies” “Yes the chocolate was finally in stock so I had to- hey hands off” “But I haven’t had your cookies in a month” “Nether has the others” “Yea but they could wait I got fiancé privileges” when you turned your back to grab the potatoes he “sneakily” grab a cookie but got caught by Stella “Daddy me cookie” “Sssh we will spit it” her little giggles fill your ears. Your favorite sound. 

Soon the boys piled in “Y/N” “Stella” “cookies” were heard throughout the room. The boys lined up as you served them, then they all settled in, in their seats to start Eddie’s campaign. In this one-shot campaign, they had to save Eddie’s the banished's fair maiden, you, and their little princess, Stella. She was so excited to be in it, she even brought out her crown from her backpack and put it on. After she ate, she climbs into Eddie’s lap, her favorite spot, and “helped” Eddie with his visual aid. You watched your family, bellies full, big smiles even mike, after a hard week this was your reward, this was your happy place.  

The night ended, the empty Tupperware put away, Stella fast asleep on Eddie’s lap. You walked out hand in hand with Eddie holding Stella, he covered her with her blanket when he stepped outside, then he put her into her car seat with a kiss on her forehead. You made sure each boy had a ride before heading to your car. You and Eddie stay until everyone was picked up. He turned to you and kissed your lips. “I missed you” “I been with you this whole time” “Yeah but you weren’t in my arms” you rolled your eyes and laughed at him “Your too cute” You kissed Eddie again then you got into your car. “I see you at home” “Yes, I’m just going to drop by Uncle Wayne’s really quick then I will be home” “Ok” then you kissed once more before you drove away. 

You and Eddie lived in a little two bedroom next to the trailer park, so he would be a few minutes behind. You got Stella out of the car, did an amazing mom move holding her and the bags all while unlocking the door. You set the bags down then grabbed her pj’s put them on then tucked her in with a kiss. You went into the kitchen and started picking it up, getting the meat out for tomorrow's dinner and breakfast. Eddie and Stella loved Saturday mornings, you make a big breakfast, and they watched Saturday morning cartoons, you brought out extra knowing the freshman boys would probably come over. After about 15 minutes you hear Eddie’s van pull up, as you were finishing washing the dishes you feel Eddie’s arm wrap around your waist. “Oh, my love I haven’t since you in forever I almost don’t remember what your face looks like” Oh Eddie how you loved his antics you turned to play along but nothing came out. Eddie held a bouquet of flowers for you. “Eddie- I- Oh- Eddie-” he chuckled “My love” he started “ Will you accompany me on a date tomorrow night” “Oh Eddie, Stella and I would love to-” “As much as I love my Star tomorrow night will just be us” “But we don’t have a babysitter” “I already got that covered” you teared up even years later you are still touched over his love for you. “Well then yes, I will accompany you tomorrow night”  

Eddie got his clothes ready to shower “So are you going to hop in with me” you looked at the time “It’s late so I will take you up on that but no funny business” “No promises” he said with a winked. After the shower you did your night routine and put on your Eddie shirt with some shorts, Eddie was just in a pair of boxers checking you out “You're so beautiful my love” “Oh stop I’m just in my pj’s” “And” *kiss* “still” *kiss* “beautiful” *kiss*. You climb into bed when arms open as Eddie jumps into bed with you, he settles in your arms with his head on your chest as your stork his hair. He tells you about his day and how that prick Jason picked on the hellfire club again, but how he did what you told him to do when he had the urge to punch his stupid face. But you were so proud of him that he controlled himself, he can’t have another fight so close to graduation. The topic then changes, and his words got lower and slower as did his breath. He got quiet for a minute, you thought he fell asleep nut he clears his throat he smiled and said “Let's have another”

Your last post is amazing and I want to share with you that I had a similar journey when it comes to shipping byler.

I first watched the show when season 2 had just come out in 2017, and I was a hardcore milkvan shipper (I was 13 and I didn't know any better and lacked critical thinking skills lmao). While watching season 3 for the first time I noticed Will being gay (I gasped at the rain fight scene), but just like you I assumed milkvan would be endgame. After watching the infamous last milkvan kiss in the last episode, I was left with a weird feeling about it for the next week but I was never able to put my finger on what exactly had felt so wrong in that scene.

Like you, I also have never shipped ships where I didn't notice that there was clear buildup towards endgame (I even watched outer banks for the first time earlier this year and a lot of the fandom swears there has been jiara buildup from the first season, but I know that's not true and the only scene I can identify as true buildup is in the last episode of season 2). However, two years ago I began studying film and how it works, first in highschool and last year in college. I learned a lot about visual storytelling and I also gained an incredible amount of media literacy. Exactly a year ago, a month before vol 1 came out, I was bored and decided to rewatch the whole 3 seasons.

With my older age now and my better understanding of cinematography and narrative, I stopped liking milkvan in the first season because of the born sexy yesterday trope, but I also began to notice how Mike was surrounded by queer coding, both narratively and by the framing of his scenes with Will (the hand hold close up hello). Then I got to the end of season 3, watched that kiss again... and I noticed Mike's eyes were full open and the closet (Wills closet!) door was perfectly dividing Mike and El as if there was a wall between them. That's how, years after, I realized why that scene had felt so wrong to me the first time I watched it. I saw that boy was gay.

However, I was still skeptical precisely because I never fell for queer coding. But I went onto to Tumblr and I decided to read byler theories. I went in with an open mind and I realized that it made perfect sense and it was set up way too perfectly, so it couldn't be a coincidence, either it was queer waiting or true.

I went into vol 1 so excited, I noticed Mike's queer coding on episode 1 alone was SO heavy (I went 🤨 with his bedroom posters and one way sign, the way he looked at Eddie, the people he wanted to ask to be subs in Hellfire...). Then when he dropped the famous "were friends, were friends!" that's when I knew they were going there. And they I saw that he couldn't say I love you to El? That was the moment I smiled widely, and ever since that moment, I've known byler is endgame and I've never had a single doubt ever again. Not even in the aftermath of volume 2. I knew Mike's speech being based on the painting attributed to El when it's actually Wills mimicked the plot of many teenage early 2000s movies (yes I was the girl who wrote you that love letter not her, I'm the one who actually loves you like that... And then boom they always end together). Then, El wasn't speaking to him, and I saw the last shot with the couples standing together. I knew that it was intentional for them to be positioned that way, and at this point I knew it wasn't queerbaiting

It's so cool to hear other bylers experiences with being introduced to all the evidence and just hearing about similar experiences in general!

I feel like a lot of bylers are just sort of lumped in with this naive stereotype of someone who always falls for queer-bait? Like we kind of just get lumped into it when the circumstances for Byler are completely different than the queer-bait ships that came way before.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with being a frequent queer-baitee. There literally isn't. Especially bc queer-baiting is referring to instances when a queer non-canon pairing is supported by the fans and the creators sort of humor it while knowing full well it won't happen?

Obviously times are changing at like lightening speed.

For example Stranger Things came out in 2016 and tbh 2016 is a completely different era of representation that 2023. 2016 was like the end of the queer-baiting era almost, give or take a few years. As we got closer to the 2020's, we started to see more queer rep that I feel like wasn't very overtly obviously queer-bait, but often queer characters at the forefront as the main or being more than just another example of the 'bury your gays' trope.

Also I took film classes in high school and I'm now majoring in film studies! So that was also something that no doubt had a massive impact on my perspective of things changing throughout that time from s1 to s4's release as well!

Even despite that I am a little bit slow about catching onto things, and so like it doesn't even matter that I have extra terminology under my belt or something. For example, I have a sister who hates movies, but when I do manage to convince her to watch a movie or show that I think she'll like, she'll notice stuff I didn't notice upon watching for the first time, while I on the other hand didn't notice that detail until like my 3rd rewatch. And it seriously pisses me off so much!!!!! She doesn't even appreciate her gift!

I remember watching s4 with her, and literally having no knowledge of anything outside of half paying attention while watching, she was like, Mike's pocket looks like an arrow... And I just looked at her completely silent and had to look away like seriously fuck you I had to go online and hear hundreds of bylers obsessing over it to think about it that way. But that's also just us as a fandom seeing stuff simultaneously and figuring it out together. Maybe I would've figured out the arrow pocket myself if I had actually not been exposed to the flurry of theories while s4 was promoted and released.

Still, it just goes to show that while yes extra knowledge about film is extremely helpful, like very helpful obviously, someone without any experience can be capable of picking up on things you missed regardless. And I do love that because it's just a reminder that no matter peoples bias' we can work together and figure shit out.

Also why I sometimes still enjoy lurking reddit bc they can be smart, and even a homophobes POV can come in handy bc I feel like they are avoiding the gay subtext at all costs so they're able to focus on things that we might overlook?

I do notice that a lot of people treat bylers like they are pervs and need to stop shipping boys together bc it's just not going to happen and we shouldn't be crying queer-bait, or this or that?

But like, first of all, it's half-canon my friend. One of the characters is, in canon, in love with the other. And there's still one more season left. And the other character has no idea that the other character is in love with them...

That doesn't happen bro. It just doesn't.

And not only that but, we were obviously milkvans at one point... I personally skipped entire episodes for those bitches...

And yet, even despite that, I also noticed something off between them just like 90% of the ga did before even looking up theories or picking up on byler fully.

This isn't a case of a bunch of people shipping two boys for shits and giggles (and even if it was, who fucking cares).

What's happening on Stranger Things is not something that happens, ever. You don't make the main couple become this pairing that the audience is indifferent to in the 3rd and 4th season, practically repeating the same storyline of them being incompatible, only to make their love for each other fail at saving the day... and with unresolved feelings between the main guy and his best friend being unaddressed... It's not a thing.

If more fans realized that this isn't even about shipping and it's just about literally paying attention beyond seeing what you want to see, then they'd understand where we're coming from. I shipped Milkvan but it's clear to me that the story is trying to convey they are not right for each other. I'm not going to hold onto a romantic relationship between two characters who met when they were like 12 and were sort of pressured into being romantic instantly, just bc love at first sight or something? That's stupid. If it was built up more satisfying, and if Will wasn't there being in love with Mike and with Mike clearly holding similar feelings then it wouldn't be what it clearly is. A fucking story that is clearly heading in the direction of a straight-bait/endgame main queer couple.

Summary: you and Eddie hated each other's guts, being the sub in their D&D session helped you talk about something that's been bugging you for a long time.

Eddie Munson. You could swear this kid’s life purpose was to make your days insufferable, but things weren’t always this way. Most of the time you and Eddie would ignore each other’s existence in school. You both had the same style , same movies and music preferences ,but found yourselves in different groups. All was fine until that god forsaken day. The cafeteria incident as you and your friends called it. Eddie had made another one of his famous speeches and you couldn’t help but talk back. “right, so whoever doesn’t enjoy the same things as you is lame, right Munson? Yea I’m sure you’ll get much more acceptance now.” You had said and Eddie felt threatened by his own ‘kind’ at that moment or whatever. He would make comments when he saw you on the hallway , always making sure you heard and you would snap back immediately, never missing the opportunity to shut him up.

You worked at the family video in the afternoons so you ,Steve and Robin had gotten pretty close which of course meant that you had befriended the kids that followed them everywhere as well. Once you walked in for your shift that afternoon your friends gave each other a knowing look as you stormed around the place looking like a crazy person. “okay what did he say this ti-“ Steve started ,but you cut him off “ He called ME, ME of all people, a fucking POSER. Like , what the fuck Munson, look at yourself, with your long ass hair and all the band patches. Wonder if he even listens to them.” They both laughed at you “don’t laugh he’s fucking annoying as shit” “his long curly hair and soft smile and ringed fingers ,that Munson?” Robin said half laughing. You had said those things, but you were drunk and it was before he became THIS annoying. “yea yea Robin, that one. And by the way I don’t stand by those words anymore” Steve then chimed in “is that why you keep looking at him in awe every time?” you shot him a glare “shut up Harrington”. They started laughing again. Some time passed and suddenly the two shits burst into the store. “ y/n!” Dustin yelled “ I’m not here,  fuck off ,no “ “ y/n please he will kill us, we just need a sub” you came out of the counter and folded your arms “ What’s in it for me?” he smiled “You’ll get to play after a long time and if we win you’ll have something to tease him about , please pleeeease” you looked at mike and he gave you a smile “fine”. You hated the fact that you accepted ,but what else could you do. Dustin was right, it would be fun beating Munson at his own game.

Friday came and you got ready. Picked the too shits from their places and headed to school. You regret saying yes the moment you walked in the hall. They opened the door and motioned you in. “what’s this?” Eddie said half laughing when you walked in “she’s the sub” Dusting smiled and Munson started laughing “absolutely not ,forget it” you sighted “what’s up Munson? Afraid you’ll lose?” he came closer. You could smell cheap cologne and cigarettes on him “no no my dearest y/n. I’m just scared that you’ll spoil our night” he said  smirking and bending down to your level “look , I’m doing this for the kids, if you want me to go I will ,just make something up so they won’t be too disappointed. I don’t want to deal with this today.” You whispered and his face softened. “ Let’s see if you can even get close to beating me. Welcome to Hellfire” he smiled and gave you his hand to shake. The session went on for about one hour and ended with success. Everyone cheered for you and hugged each other “ told you we’d beat him” Dustin yelled excited. “yea yea it was fun. Now, time to head back yea?” you said and they frowned “I can take them” Jeff said “oh , uh sure yea, thanks” you replied and started organizing your stuff in your backpack while they left “you actually care about the shits huh?” Eddie said behind you in a low voice. “why wouldn’t I ? besides, you should have seen their pouty faces. Not even you would be able to refuse.” He looked at you puzzled “ not even me?” “oh you know heartless and mean and basically a major asshole” he touched his chest as if he got hurt by your words “how could you say something like that about me y/n?” truth is , you and Eddie had history, even if you both pretended you forgot. You and him had been in a party once ,one thing led to the other and before you knew you were bent over the bathroom sink looking at yourself getting absolutely destroyed by him. You blamed it on the drinks and the weed and never really talked about it. Well , you tried talking about it , but he pretended to be clueless so you dropped it. You zoned out while looking at him because of the image that popped in your head.” y/n, hellooo” he waved his hand in your face “sorry, yea , it’s pretty easy to say such things about you Munson, given the fact that they’re true” now he looked actually hurt. “oh, y/n all these days I was just playing along, I don’t actually hate you” you huffed and looked at your feet “ no I know, but I should hate you. I’m going, it was fun” you said leaving the class and walking in the empty school to your car. How could he not remember. Sure you were tipsy ,but you drank just as much as he did. Steve and Robin had told you not to pay too much attention to it. You couldn’t. It’s been almost a month and you couldn’t get his image out of your head or the way he made you feel that night. That was maybe what made you turn around and walk back into the class. “hey, I can’t keep this inside anymore ,we need to talk” you said when you walked in and he just dropped his things and sat on the table facing you “ we can talk” you walked closer “ I know you said you don’t remember anything about that night at Rick’s, but I do and I can’t seem to get it off my mind no matter how hard I try” he looked down ,he knew you’d bring it up again. “ why can’t you just leave things be? We were drunk and we fucked” this man had a talent pissing you off “ so that was it, you just got horny and thought I look desperate enough so why not ?” he got up and walked around not looking at you “ y/n we just fucked, I don’t like you and I know for a fact that you don’t like me. We both needed a warm body, that’s all” you stared at him with tears threatening to spill. You were tough, not tough enough to just stand there and hear him talk about you like you were nothing but a way to blow off steam. “ I was too drunk and made a mistake” he said.

A couple of tears slid down your face “so I was just a warm body to you. You know what my mistake was Eddie? My mistake was not being drunk enough. If I was maybe I wouldn’t remember and it would be best for both of us. Also fuck you Munson because you are an asshole, the biggest one of them all. Congrats !” you said fully crying now and wishing you never told him anything. You stormed off not caring about the fact that he just saw you cry for him.

The whole ride home all you could think about was how much you hated your self for not hating him. Once you got to your place you dropped your bag on the floor next to your door and headed upstairs to your room. You’d normally lock your door so your family wouldn’t burst in , but they weren’t home. You got undressed and curled up in a little ball on your bed ,crying your eyes out and feeling embarrassed for even thinking he would ever care. Time passed and you had fallen asleep naked. A soft knock on your window woke you. For your own sake your curtains were closed and behind them you could make out a long haired figure with a leather jacket. ‘is that man serious?’ you shot up and wrapped a sheet around your bare figure before drawing the curtains and opening the window “ what the fuck do you want psycho?” you asked looking at him wide eyed. “ I fucked up, I – we need to talk ,for real this time” he said and you sat away form the window letting him in. he jumped on your bed after taking his boots off and throwing them on your floor. Why would you even give him a chance to speak after everything he’s said? Oh yea, because you couldn’t resist this boy and the effect his eyes and words had on you “what is it Eddie?” you asked rubbing your eyes and yawing. He wasn’t talking , he couldn’t talk. He had just realised that you were standing on your bed with him with just sheets covering your naked body, the one he had tattooed  in his mind, the one that he would see every time he closed his eyes, trying to find some peace. “hey!” you spoke again getting him out of his thoughts “yea sorry , I , uh , I remember everything that happened and I know that I’ve been acting stupid for a month saying I didn’t.” you folded your hands on your chest and looked at him with the most disgusted look you could muster. “also, the only thing I regret about that night was being too drunk and high and not being able to last longer” he joked leaning his head to the side and smiling “ that doesn’t make up for the fact that you used me because you were horny” you replied bitterly and truth is, he didn’t. Every time he saw or even thought about you he would go crazy, even before you and him got intimate. He couldn’t tell you that, he wasn’t the kind of guy to confess his utter admiration and love for you right there and then  and get rejected. Still he wanted to be close, he wanted to be able to talk to you and piss you of , make you smile, worship you, use your beautiful body in any way imaginable and make you come all over him like no guy ever had. “ I know, I also know that you couldn’t keep it in your pants either, well, your torn up fishnet tights or whatever.” He felt himself trailing off in the thought of him tearing up your tights and bending you over. God Eddie felt as if he could listen to the desperate little sounds you made one more time , he would die happy and complete. “my point is , dear y/n , the sex was great and I personally would do it again, no strings attached, no labels and shit. Pure, filthy fucking here and there. What do you say?” your mouth fell slightly open at his words. Not because they socked you or anything ,but because the way he talked about it gave your entire body goosebumps. “no strings no labels?” you asked again and his smile grew “exactly sweetheart” you grinned and rolled your eyes “ I’m afraid you won’t be able to live up to that term Munson, but yea fuck it” he smiled and gave you his hand to shake. He held it for a little longer and you could feel this simple touch do things to your mind, things you had promised your self you wouldn’t allow to feel for him again.

"Fuck, I gotta go. I'll talk to you later, Robin. I swear I'll make it up to you! Tell me about this girl next time. I wanna hear everything! Bye!"

You practically slammed the phone back onto the switch and looked at the clock, 10:26 pm. Dustin's campaign is probably over by now. You were supposed to pick up your brother, Dustin, at 10pm sharp. "Shit, mom's gonna kill me!" You scrambled around your room, fixing your hair into a comfortable style. You raided your closet and changed your clothes to look a little more presentable than you were not even five minutes ago.

Your mother was on a business trip, leaving you to take care of the brat. He was a handful, and so were his friends. Dustin would always rant to you about a guy named Eddie and how great he was. You didn't buy it...

"Why couldn't you have had someone else to drive you home, Dustin.." You were talking to yourself as if Dustin was really there. You grabbed your keys and rushed out to the car, ignoring the concerned glance from your mother's cat as you walked out the door. "Bye, Mews" you mumbled.

You started the car a soon pulled out of your driveway and into the night. As your hands tightly gripped the steering wheel, you were surprised to see how empty the streets were. "Fuuuck I'm so late." an anxious feeling in your stomach washed over you. Part of you felt guilty, but you knew that Dustin would forgive you. It's in his nature.

When you pulled up to the school, Dustin was nowhere to be seen. However, you saw the dim lights of the Hellfire Club's room from outside. "He better be done. It's been like 5 hours!" you said to yourself as you walked through the door near the club room. You graduated last year, and that door was never locked. You had used it many times to skip school and hang out with Steve and Robin.

You walked inside, feeling yourself warm up from the cold November air outside. "Jesus, nothing's changed," as you looked at the aging posters that had been there for years, you felt a sense of nostalgia. You never thought you'd be back here, let alone picking up your brother from his stupid club. You didn't really think it was stupid. But if you had to choose between a very interesting call with Robin versus visiting the Hellfire Club, you'd choose the call. 

You heard shouting and many voices yelling "Mike!" or "Dustin!" making you roll your eyes. "Jesus, they're still playing?" you said to yourself quietly as you followed the echoed shouting from the hall to the club room. The entrance was decorated with all kinds of stuff that looked like something out of a cult. "Wow, very festive.." you muttered to yourself.

You didn't notice the eyes watching you from inside the room. "Do you need something?" a voice from inside asked. The man had long hair and was adorned in the Hellfire t-shirt that you had seen Dustin wear dozens of times and large rings. You'd be lying if you said you weren't a little intimidated. "Uh yeah, I'm-" you were cut off by Dustin. "We're almost done, Y/n! Just like five more minutes please?" you nod and roll your eyes. You were about to walk back to your car when you heard, "Wait!"

You turned around to see the long-haired man walking toward you. "So you're the famous Y/n Henderson. It's a pleasure to meet you." He held his hand out to shake yours. His rings caught your eye as you took his hand. "I am. And you are?" You tilt your head waiting for a response, to which there was none. Eddie stopped listening when you shook his hand. He had heard Dustin talk about his sister before. He only knew you by name. He looked at your confused face and realized his mistake. "Huh? Oh, I'm Eddie." You heard whispered talking from behind Eddie.

"I think you have some people waiting for you, Eddie." You couldn't help but laugh as his face went a little pink in embarrassment. The other Hellfire members were surprised to say the least. They had never seen their leader so flustered and at a loss for words. "Why don't we talk after your session?" you offered, making him smile. "Yeah, I'm sure Dustin could wait in the car, can't you, Dustin?" He narrowed his eyes at Dustin, who was rolling his eyes.

"No, I'm not gonna wait in the car while you suck each other's faces!" this made you and Eddie laugh. "I'll wait outside. I wouldn't want disturb the campaign.." you smirk at him and watch him walk back. You smiled to yourself as you heard protests when Eddie told them that the todays session would end soon.

As you waited outside the room, you rolled your eyes at the things said about you. "Wow, Dustin, you never told us you had a hot sister.." You could practically see the image of the disgusted look on Dustin's face in your mind as you held in your laughter. "Answer this honestly, Henderson. Is your sister dating anyone at the moment?" Gareth asked, making Dustin throw dice at him. 

"Alright, it's over for tonight! No throwing things! We'll finish this tomorrow. Henderson, ask your sister if she'd like to join us and watch tomorrow." Eddie started packing up the figurines, dice, and anything else used for the game.

You sat on the hood of your car, waiting patiently for Dustin and Eddie. Dustin passed you and sat in the passenger seat, not saying a word. "C'mon don't be like that, Dustin. It's just a friendly chat!" you can't help but laugh as he rolls the window down. "Stay the hell away from my sister, Eddie!" he points a finger in Eddie's face. Eddie smirked and ignored him. 

"Sorry about him, he's protective all of the sudden." you laugh as Dustin flips you off from inside the car. "Don't worry about it. He has to be, I'm sure every guy in Hawkins is after you." He leans on the hood of the car with you. You just shake your head and scoff. "Believe me, nobody in Hawkins is looking my way. More reason to get out of here, you know?" Eddie stopped listening after the first sentence yet again. He was shocked. How could nobody have snatched you up yet? 

"You're joking." Eddie sent you a look of utter confusion. It made you laugh. God he loved your laugh. He watched you sigh, and he couldn't help but feel angry at Dustin for never introducing him sooner. "Nope, but I don't feel bad about it. I'll find someone once I leave Hawkins." Eddie couldn't help but admire your positivity. He was a little disappointed that you weren't looking for someone in Hawkins. 

"So, you've given up on every guy in Hawkins?" you smirked knowingly and shrugged. "I don't know, Eddie. Why?" you press him for answers, trying to make him squirm. He avoided your eyes and stared at the ground. "No reason, just wondering.." he trailed off.

You smile and jump off the hood, standing in the gravel in front of Eddie. "Well, if you were curious..." you start, watching his eyes light up in hope. It was the most adorable thing you've ever seen. "I'd gladly go on a date with you, Eddie." 

Eddie tried to keep his composure. He was usually very outgoing and extremely flamboyant. But in this moment, he felt very anxious. He'd never truly felt this nervous around anyone, let alone a girl he'd just met. But he knew one thing; If Dustin was fun, his sister was even better. 

"I was going to ask you, but it didn't feel like the right time." He felt embarrassed, but when he looked at you and found your understanding gaze, he relaxed. He didn't want to make you uncomfortable the first time he met you. It happened too often for Eddie. Whenever he met girls, he'd move too fast. But he liked you already for several reasons; you weren't judgemental, you took care of people around you, and you were absolutely gorgeous. 

He didn't know where the fuck Dustin was hiding you but he was over the moon about you and he had only met you an hour ago. "Might not want to tell Dustin though, he'll freak." You glanced back at Dustin, who was talking to one of his friends through his walkie talkie. You made sure Dustin wasn't looking when you grabbed Eddie's hand. "Here's my number. We can talk when I get home. I'd love to know more about you." 

Eddie watched you scribble your number onto his hand. He admired how focused you looked, trying to get your pen to put ink onto his hand and barely succeeding. "I'll see you tomorrow then?" Eddie stood up and put his hands in his jean pockets, the cold air making his fingers practically frozen. "Sure, I'll be there. Maybe I could actually watch the campaign this time." Your curiosity towards him and his hobby made Eddie's heart soar as he watched you pull out of the school parking lot. 

Fuck he had it bad for you. He felt like a teenager all over again with how crazy he was about you. "So what did you two talk about?" Dustin tried to gauge whether you were now dating his best friend. "Nothing much, just talking about you being too nosy for your own good." You teased him, making him huff and look out the passenger window. Sure, he was annoyed, but deep down he knew Eddie would take care of you.

"And we talked about our date next week...." you said with a smirk. 

"Son of a bitch!"

Other hammer references

Yesterday I wrote about Dustin's Slammer he demonstrates Will, El and Mike in particular (here's the post) and I wanted to include other scenes with a hammer in them.

But before - an interesting fact about the word "hammer" and its origin. Old English hamor, hamer, of Germanic origin: related to Dutch hamer, German Hammer, and Old Norse hamarr ‘rock’. The original sense was probably ‘stone tool’.

oh god. this is how I know you don't look at all my posts (which is fair) but basically. there's this website 8flix that has LOTS of tv and movie scripts, including some stranger things ones. so byler fandom LOVES analyzing the scripts, bc they include like stage directions, and characters inner thoughts and stuff sometimes, and we've gotten some nice wins out of that, ("will isn't looking at the cute girl, he's looking at mike" you will always be famous)

so midway through july the dear billy script was being given out to donors, and it had some interesting stuff in it, so everyone went nuts and wanted the rest of them, so it's then announced we'll be getting the papa script on august 1st, again, only to donors. cool.

And then, it gets pushed back, to august 5th, last friday, (I can't believe it's already been a week) so this guy (nick) is making cryptic tweets about 4 chimes eastern time or whatever, and we all pick up that the script will be getting emailed out at about 4 pm est, and he's also been interacting with bylers a lot specifically and hyping it up bc we make up like 95% of the donors, and it's already been decided that those who are paying will immediately screenshot the important bits and post them, so comes 4 o'clock, and we're all refreshing the byler tag like crazy, but it's not out immediately. and at first we're like, yeah ok, this guy has to send the emails, AND then people have to post screenshots, so we'll wait a bit.

but then it's been an hour.

and then two hours.

and then three.

next thing we know, comes the announcement that he's having technical difficulties, and it will be released on saturday instead. same time. so saturday comes.

and we wait.

and we wait.

nothing.

here comes the announcement that YET AGAIN technical difficulties, he's going to work through the night, it will be emailed out sometime on sunday, but to hold us over, he posts a screenshot of a snippet of the van scene, which is what we all REALLY wanted to see. (the man knows his audience)

it includes the line "his [will's] own words cut deeply to the core. I hate who I am" as you can expect. sends the fandom into an ABSOLUTE frenzy. then, at like 6 in the morning, the full script drops, we spend all of sunday analyzing it to hell and back. we're finally happy. moments of peace.

then comes monday.

the twitter account for the stranger things writer's room says, and I quote, "PSA: any "leaked" season 4 scripts or script pages are FAKE. Do not pay anyone for scripts as this is a SCAM" (they also say that they'll start posting official script snippets of whatever we want to see)

so now we're all really confused? they didn't explicitly mention 8flix, but what else could they be referring to? #bylerscript has been trending on twitter for days now. but why didn't they mention it sooner? why didn't they say anything about pursuing legal action? why did people get copyright strikes for posting the 8flix scripts online? and 8flix looked legit? it's been running for years, it has thousands of scripts, and it's considered a valid resource for multiple ivy league film courses.

people are sending nick death threats, the mi|evens are laughing at us saying they knew it was a scam the whole time, all social media is a hellfire.

nick claims and continues to claim that if the scripts are fake, he didn't know it and also must've gotten fucked over by his source, I believe him, but his and 8flix's reputation is ruined now.

come wednesday. stranger writers twitter account runs a Twitter poll asking what we want to see. among the options is the van scene, we all vote for it, even though we think it's likely that they'll edit it before showing it to us, if there's even any evidence in there, and that option wins, we are now waiting for them to post it.

Stranger Things: The Hellfire Club review!

This is not only my very first post in this corner of the tumblr, but also my very first series review in my life. So, hopefully, you will like it!

(And also: if you have any thoughts related to improving my future reviews, or thoughts about my thoughts on the episode, feel free to kindly express them in the comments below: that is, if you happen to not just stumble upon this part of the internet by happenstance).

Now, before I start my review, I want to declare that this is in no shape or form "professional" or paid review of the show. I am not affiliated with the Netflix or Stranger Things team in any way. I am writing this solely for the sake of  my own joy, as well as for the sake of those who might find this review either helpful or entertaining for them. I actually just finished watching the first episode, The Hellfire Club, and smitten with the wide range of (mostly positive) experiences and emotions that I don't have anywhere else to express (none of my invisible friends watch this series)*, and before other people's thoughts, experiences and reviews cloud my own, I decided to share my own opinions on the matter here, in my intimate corner of the internet, before I meet the others’.

*Also, because this season's episodes are very long, I will need to watch them in separate time intervals. Thus I need to fill the time between them up with something actually as interesting as the series: so what better than writing about it, right?

All this being said, I am hereby commencing my review.

I will open it by saying that the review consists of several distinct categories, each of which will be commented upon in due time. The first of these I will tackle upon is juxtapositions I observed and found interesting in the episode.

I loved how they used lots of juxtapositions to introduce the themes of this season and to set up the stage for the remainder of the season. And indeed, the first episode is mostly that: setting up the stage, introducing new characters and re-introducing old ones, establishing different plot narratives (Hawkins, California and, yet unseen, Alaska one), and introducing the arch-villain for this season: all-mysterious, but fabulous looking, Vecna.

I will comment on all of them, but first: juxtapositions. The most prominent theme, as my observational faculties allow me to notice, is the crossroad between being labeled as a "loser" for doing things that you love (in the case of our characters, that means playing D&D fantasy board game in "Hellfire Club" in their new high school) and being one of the cool popular guys, or trying to fit into that category (which is the case of Justin Sinclair, who has the chance to become famous in the basketball team he recently joined in the same high school).

So, there's that: two games; D&D and basketball; one seen as inferior to the other, fueled by the popular journalism's claims of it being for freaks and being demonic* (not to say evil), and the other seen in a more favorable light, as being popular and overall good.

*It is even called "The Cult of Vecna" by the leader of the club, Eddie. So, that does not cast the less sinister-looking light on it.

Of course, this causes a rupture between up-to-now good friends: Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson (Hellfire gang) and Lucas Sinclair (basketball gang). Where their relationship is heading to and how it will fit into the overall narrative of the season, it can only be speculated. I will reserve my judgment about it for now.

However, the juxtaposition of these scenes near the end of the episode was fantastic. On one hand, we have the basketball game in which Lucas scores the winning point, while on the other hand we have the D&D game where Lucas’ younger witty sister, Erica Sinclair, scores the winning point in the favor of her team. Their synchronization and intensity was brilliant, as well as a little bit funny, as this series always was. I am allotting 1 point to this aspect of the episode.

Another juxtaposition happened between Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers, this time to introduce another kind of relationship between characters: love. These two are separated both by distance (they are in different cities) and by different goal orientations in life: Nancy now works as a journalist in California, while Jonathan is awaiting the response from a college he applied to. However, despite this and the effort of others to imply differently, their love towards each other remains unchanged. It was interesting watching the one mean-looking journalist question Nancy about Jonathan and one Jonathan's friend (or I guess so) question him about Nancy. But they both defended each other and showed that they are still in love, even though separated. However, the worms of doubt and/or suspicion are probably planted and now rummaging through their minds, so we shall see in which direction this will go. Another point goes to this.

When it comes to the characters, Chrissy is one interesting addition to the team, who perishes too soon unfortunately. She is the popular and successful girl in the Hawkins high school, a girlfriend of a popular basketball player who plays in the team Lucas joined: Tigers. So it might be intriguing to some to find out that she wants to secretly buy drugs (their meeting place was the middle of the wood, yikesy) from Eddie: probably because she thinks that she started losing her mind from the recent visions she experienced from Vecna.*

*I speculated at the beginning of the episode that these were visions imposed by him, but by the end of the episode, it becomes apparent that something else is happening. As other fans have previously speculated, I am assuming that he somehow "captured" Chrissy's mind in, what fans called, some type of mindscape. He also said he wanted to free Chrissy from the pain she experienced. However, apart from the torment his visions caused in her mind, I didn't notice any other troubling signs or worrisome symptoms in her character. In fact, she seemed happy. So, what Vecna is actually doing, or for which reason (he doesn't seem to be evil-for-evil's sake, like Demogorgon or Mind Flayer, the previous animalistic antagonists of the series; he appears to be more human, and therefore, much more scary and intimidating) is still unclear and I will reserve my judgment for now.

I am allotting 1 point as well to the previous argument.

My favorite character in the series so far is Erica Sinclair, hats down. I love her witty humor coupled with her fierce persona, all inhabiting her ten year old tiny body. I find that amusing. However, at the same time, I think that her precocious wittiness is a little bit over the top. It somehow looks unnatural, hence I am reducing one point for this.

Another thing I thought was over-exaggerated was El's bullying. Maybe it is just me or the lack of my bullying experience, but I think that El's bullying situation in new school in California was a little bit too much. It looks unrealistic to my eyes, because I never heard of a case where so many people were so mean to a new girl in school, just because she was... new. Or, as I am not from America, maybe I am just not familiar enough with American bullying etiquette. I am reducing one point for this aspect as well.

(After all, maybe these two points were unfairly taken from the show: maybe it was their intention to over-exaggerate these things? I don't know. You be the judge for yourself.)

However, the good part of the episode was the lack of unrealistic scenes. The episode really looked very well planned, thought-out, organized and the build-up to what is to come is perfect (+1 point). At the same time, the episode suffered because it was a set-up episode: I yawned several times throughout (-1 point).

Another thing I loved is the implementation of the tiny "Chekhov’s gun" elements in the narrative: things that are introduced in the story and which seem unimportant at the beginning, but eventually have their pay-off later in the storyline. Some of these thing that I observed, based on trailers and speculative knowledge of this season: Eddie's guitar, Will's sexuality, Chrissy's introduction (at the beginning of the episode I wondered who she is and why she is important, then understood by the end of it), and Billy: she appears both in the speech of Chrissy's boyfriend and in the nightmares of Max. (+1 point)

The final thing I wanted to mention in this longish review of season four’s chapter one (I already got tired from typing this, so I don't know if I will have any energy left for writing reviews for the remaining episodes, eh) was narrative structure, which is an egg. Or a circle, if you will.

The episode was opened with, what appears to be, the brutal Massacre at Hawkins Laboratory, represented in such a way as to represent Eleven as the one who committed it. The end of an episode showed us the principal antagonist of the season (or, at least, we don't have any evidence that suggest that someone else will take that role in final two episodes, for example), and what that antagonist is capable of doing. My spine went brrrrrr after that scene.

I loved the horror aspects of the show so far, and that is the best part of this episode. They raised the horror bar for a great margin, in comparison to the previous seasons, which I LOVE.

Meanwhile, the stuff in the middle of the episode between these two horrors was mostly light-hearted and character oriented, with sprinkles of fun here and there. And yes, Vecna's visions (I will call them like that for now) would occasionally appear: but rather than being scary, I would call them wondrously enigmatic and intense. Especially the ticking-clock in the woods. It's one of those visions that inspire my imagination and, being a writer myself, maybe it will spur me to write some content of my own. The final point goes to this.

This, now, is the end of my review. I haven't mentioned every aspect or every character in this episode, but it was never my intention to do so. I simply reflected on those aspects I found intriguing, interesting or which made an impression on my Self.

All in all, this was a very good episode which I enjoyed. Based on the points allocated above, my score would be five out of 8 stars. On an imdb, that would be an eight out of ten. I am saving the nines and tens for the later episodes, which I expect to be better.
