I don't know how to explain how much I love this clip, the way he was smiling and when he saw the scroll the smile automatically fell, how instead of asking how Will was his first question was WHAT´S THAT, how when he started the question he kept looking at the object, how his eyes seemed accusatory (are you giving your art to someone who isn't me????) and how his mind was probably going 3,000,000 miles per hour thinking about Eleven's letter.

What Mike doesn't really understand is that he always has wanted Will, deeply, since he saw him. But, yk, everybody gets gfs. He got a girlfriend and continued looking for what he wanted, Will, in El, he couldn't find him, that's why mileven has so many problems, that defines the van scene, Mike felt love hearing Will's words and STILL couldn't tell Eleven until WILL motivated him to. He wants Will, that's why his arc in s5 revolves around him and that's the reason he was tryina push Will away, because he can't put Will in the same place as his other friends

the 'and will too' part is one of my favorite byler moments because Mike is so gay that he cant stop thinking about will even when he's talking to his girlfriend, the same girl he's supposedly in love with. like... this is them having a 'romantic moment', is it not? so why is Mike thinking about will when he's thinking about romance, huh? like idk about anyone else, but I would definitely not be bringing my best friend into a conversation with my gf that I was trying to make romantic. my guy cant even keep his mind off of will when (making an attempt at) being romantic with El. when he thinks of love, of romance, of caring about someone, he thinks of will.

and this may seem like grasping at straws, but I think that this slide in the byler proof slideshow has a good point as well that adds to this.

oh yeah. and, he almost always chooses to stand or sit with will instead of with el.

Idk, I haven't rewatched the show yet, but I think that it's incredibly interesting how Mike seems to usually have Will set as his top priority. Another thing from the byler proof slideshow (this thing is a great source, it had almost every point I want to make, highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read through it yet)

yet another 'romantic' m*leven moment in which Mike is thinking of Will. Oh and don't get me started on the snow ball.

And then! there's this. idk if you can see it, but Mike is moving towards will here, you can see him shift in direction slightly, forcing El to follow. And while I'm aware that the ship isn't all about color symbolism, I do still think that it's worth pointing out that lumax are both wearing blue and yellow, as well as Mike's yellow belt with his blue outfit.

also, Max's watch is yellow... and it's on the same wrist as the hand that is holding a BLUE BAG is on (at least in this particular scene). Will's shirt is a similar color to El's here. Max's outfit is the most obviously blue and yellow here, with her yellow shirt and blue shorts, and when Mike and El leave, while Will says it's gross, Max says that its romantic. So, while Will's shirt color is matching El's, and he says that Mike and El's relationship is 'gross', Max's outfit is in Mike and Will's colors, and she says 'its romantic'. Not saying any names, just that its romantic. idk I might just be grasping at straws here lol. not to mention the fact that dustin has blue backpack straps with yellow accents on a green shirt. also, on Max's waist is blue and yellow, and Mike is wearing a yellow belt with blue shorts. hmmm interesting.

and, of course, the fact that the only one not stated to have a romantic interest in anyone as of st3 (Will) is wearing a shirt the same color as El, who only showed an interest in Mike after he first acted interested in her. could be implying that she isn't actually interested in Mike, or that will wont choose to tell Mike how he feels until Mike does so first.

im writing this at 3am so im probably just totally delusional rn and need to go to sleep but like LOOK AT THAT!! I just love when I see byler's colors on stuff tbh, especially in scenes focused on mileven.

and back to the topic of light in windows!! Mike is sitting by a closed and dark part of the curtain, and El is standing near an open part with light shining through it. and guess what? THAT CURTAIN IS YELLOW!!! And... the lamp behind El is off. the lightbulb isn't lit... thinking about flickergate a bit now. oh, and, the poster framed behind her appears to be in blues and yellows.

and in season one, which first establishes the roles of the characters, Mike is shown, again and again, to be searching for will, constantly thinking about him, having him influence his words and actions even when they're apart. he finds El in a yellow shirt when he's searching for will, which I do find to be interesting.

oh yeah, and! in season 4, Eddie says...

and you know the kids who have the most important almost deaths or supposed deaths in season one? Mike, will, and El! Mike is being pressured into his relationship with eleven and forcing himself to conform to the idea of being straight and viewed as acceptable by other people's standards, El is being pressured and forced by Mike into entering a sort of relationship with him, and will, oh my poor boy will.

i saw a post a while ago about light between couples in stranger things, and it lives forever in my head. and i rewatched this episode recently and one bit really got to me.

there is VERY CLEARLY a window in this room. and, for most of the scene, they’re standing with the window between them. but here’s the kicker, chat.

here’s the kicker: not for ONE SECOND does the camera move to show us the window between them. it’s always framed like this, emphasizing the distance and never the relationship.

'Supergirl' by 'Gina Young' and performative heterosexuality (how it relates to byler/ Mike)

I recently did a thread where I tried to find Byler coded lyrics/ meaning in the songs from my playlist and one stood out the most.

'Supergirl' by 'Gina Young' is a song from her debut album 'Intractable' which came out in 2002. Gina is a queer artist who made a lot of good songs about being queer, one being 'Supergirl'.

This is such a good song, honestly you should listen to it. This song, or how I have interpreted it is about a lesbian woman wearing a disguise (of a straight women) to please her catholic/ conservative parents.

I can't find the lyrics online so I'm going to put all the lyrics I could deceiver by ear (I'm not good at it so please bear with me).

the stuff in brackets is me guessing btw. Please tell me if you can figure out the lyrics in the parts I'm missing.

"Supergirl, lives a double life, pretends she wants a husband instead of a wife. ----- to change her clothes (so her mama won't see the ring in her nose)". "Changes her persona and changes her name, so her daddy will believe she is one and the same as the daughter he raised to be simple and plain. Pure catholic values like mine, following in shame." So, looking more into the lyrics you can see the story of a superhero pretending to be an ordinary person, like superman pretending to be Clark Kent.

Where has superman been mentioned before? That's right, by Mike in the van scene. "I'm just some nerd that got lucky that superman landed on his doorstep -- At least Lois Lane was an ace reporter for the daily news" or something along those lines, I don't know.

Let's look at the lyrics, "Pure catholic values like mine, following in shame".

I'm just going to go out of my way to mention it but 'churchgate' believers, this could apply for that reason.

But the reason I brought it up is because a lot of people (homophobes) don't understand why someone would suffer with performative heterosexuality. One of the reasons why is because of the shame in being gay, especially in the 80s (when stranger things is set in) and 00s (when the album was released).

We live in a heteronormative society; we also live in a society that punishes/ criticises people for being different. I'm autistic (which is seen as different) which means I relate a lot to Mike, Will and the 'Supergirl'. Even though I can't help being autistic, since I was born this way, I still feel shame for being it since people are so harsh on it and people with it.

Humans are social animals, which means that all of us have an innate need/ want to belong and fit in. Take 'Patrick Bateman' from 'American Psycho' for example, he hates his job, his coworkers, all of it but he stays... why?

"Because I want... to fit... in", the whole movie he is wearing someone else's skin, not correcting people when they mistake him for another person, all the business cards look the same, it's only superficial stuff that makes them different.

When he is with his coworkers, he is a completely different person, faking smiles and laughs. This sounds familiar... hmm.

oh right, who this post is supposed to be about. All throughout the rink-o-mania and airport scene (and s3 but that's too much to get into) Mike acts like a completely different person than he did in Hawkins. He's made a persona that would be accepted by others, a straight persona. He comes in the airport looking like California stereotypes personified, all lovey-dovey with his girlfriend, acting like he didn't say to her face/ write 'I love you' to his girlfriend for their entire relationship.

Let's look at some other lyrics, "Changes her persona" and "Who do you think your fooling behind those glasses".

Mike wears sunglasses in this scene as he's in disguise (superman's whole disguise is basically just glasses) which conceals his reactions for the audience and other characters.

"But even when you're incognito I can see the letter S upon your chest", even when he is in disguise, we still know... we know what you are.

I know that this isn't a lot but I think it kind of speaks for itself, the meaning of the song and Mike's storyline throughout season 3 and 4.

I also recently rewatched American Psycho so that's why I mentioned it 😅

How I see Mike's arc as a bi Mike truther:

I think Mike started slowly liking El in s1 and then he lost her. El was a person Mike liked and cared abt, and that leads to him calling her in s2, Mike also spends so much time with Will this season, and, in my personal opinion, Mike always liked Will, he just didn't quiite know until late s4. He becomes happy because of Will, but then he gets posessed and Mike starts having issues, he lost El and he can't lose Will. Then we all know what happened and we jump into the snowball, when Will goes to dance with the girl, he feels something...odd, like it feels bad, but then El comes and he lights up again, the girl he liked. In s3 he starts having doubts, but he is going through puberty, he kind of feels weird towards Will, he knows his relationship with Will is different, but he has a girlfriend now, so let's leave Will (even though he did wanna play). He wants to get El back because she just left him for "no reason". At the end of s3 he starts realizing he has more intense feelings towards Will, Hopper's monologue makes it clear.

And then in s4...Well, he knows deep down.
