“This seat taken?”

João barely has the energy to move his eyes and look at Sadık, who has found him (much to his chagrin) hiding in a crevice of a local public park, about a ten minute walk from the building they’ve all been herded into for yet another round of utterly boring and fruitless talks.

It feels like such a farce. Keeping up appearances. Playing the game. João just wants to be at home. He wants to be in bed, tucked up in bed sheets while the day passes him by, uneventful, uninteresting, unimportant.

Modern diplomacy is just draining… In every way…

“I’ll take that as a ‘no’,” Sadık decides, helping himself to the other half of the bench.

João takes a deep breath. Knowing the other, he’s ready to launch into some long, rambling, anecdotal conversation, and he isn’t in the mood for that kind of socialising. Yet, as the seconds tick by, the words don’t come. The rambling doesn’t come. The anecdotes don’t come.

João stares blindly at the bushes opposite. They sit about a metre and a half away and form part of a winding wall of foliage in this area of the park that has created convenient pockets of seating for people like João, who like to hide.

Only, the hiding hasn’t quite worked the way he’d hoped.

Evidently.

Still, the talking does not happen. Sadık doesn’t do the talking thing he normally does, attempting to kill the silence stone cold dead with warm, mirthful words.

Rather, a hand appears around his shoulder, and João is gently pulled towards Sadık. His head falls easily upon the other’s shoulder. He doesn’t fight it, and instead, he simply lets himself flop against the other’s body. He is at Sadık’s mercy—a mercy which, so far, does not seem so bad.

“Sorry to disturb your alone time,” the other begins to say a short while later.

By now, João’s eyes are closed and he is effectively resting—almost asleep—on Sadık’s shoulder.

“I wanted to check in on you,” he continues in João’s silence. His hand lightly rubs his upper arm. “Thought earlier on you seemed a bit… not like yourself. Everything okay…?”

João can only hum. He doesn’t have the words to begin explaining how he feels, what’s going on in his head, what he wants, why he tried to go into temporary hiding… Nor does he have the energy to do so. The willpower. The care. He just wants to switch off. Just for a little bit.

It isn’t something he says out loud—no words, no energy—but it seems he doesn’t really have to. Sadık doesn’t press. He doesn’t pry. He merely accepts the silence, and comes to place his head against João’s, a cheek against a crown.

They sit together like that for a few minutes. João’s eyes remain closed. Sadık’s mouth remains closed. They remain still, resting on each other, as the cold steadily begins to creep in on them.

A lifetime seems to pass.

A lifetime, followed by death.

“If you don’t want to come back, I can make an excuse for you,” Sadık offers on a platter. A very pretty, handmade platter. “Something tells me you need rest more than you need any more meetings.”

It’s a fair diagnosis, and a sign that João needs to get some kind of grip. He can’t be mute forever.

So João sits up. His hands go to his face. He rubs down over his eyes so hard his eyeballs ache for a moment. He takes another deep breath. He asks a simple, vital question:

“Why are you being nice to me?”

The other, usually so quick, so witty, so humorous, holds onto his thoughts for a moment. He looks at João, and João looks back at him through bleary eyes, and Sadık gives him a simple, vital answer:

“Someone has to be. Might as well be me.”

It leaves João puzzled—at least, until that starts to take too much energy, and he accepts the bewilderment as who he is today. He decides he won’t ask why he feels the need to be nice, and why it is João he’s chosen as his victim. Not right now. Because, to be honest, the niceness feels like the tiniest flame on a winter’s day.

João doesn’t want to risk it dying and abandoning him to the cold again.

“Is your hotel far?”

“‘Bout five minutes that way,” he responds quietly, jabbing a finger to aid.

“Neat sense of direction,” Sadık muses, now smiling, before he suddenly rises to his feet and turns to look at João. “Come on, then,” he says. “I’ll walk you back.”

“But… But I—”

“You need a break,” the other tells him matter-of-factly. So wise. So… observant. “I want to make sure you get it.”

Arguing is futile. He knows that. He also knows that he can’t sit there on a bench all day succumbing to how he’s feeling; the world isn’t just going to swallow him up magically, so he has to do something. And maybe… Maybe Sadık is right. He needs a break. He needs rest.

A nap sounds kind of good, the more he thinks about it…

Sadık, in the end, does walk João back. He walks João back all the way to his hotel room, in fact, and makes sure he takes off his shoes, takes off his jacket, takes off his badge, and gets comfy in bed. Then he closes the curtains for him and puts João’s phone on silent so no one disturbs him.

“If you need anything,” he says as he returns to the side of the room nearest the door, “just let me know. I’m not far away.”

Drowsy and dazed, João thanks him, grateful for the pillows that cushion his face and start to cradle him. He closes his eyes once more and welcomes the peace he is beginning to feel. At last.

A kiss is pressed to his forehead.

Footsteps pad away.

A door opens.

A door shuts.

Okay I am coming around on Hector/Julia as a pairing BUT with many caveats.

I could see them as allies with unresolved romantic tension, maybe the right people meeting at the wrong time. They should not end the story together, but they should go their separate ways and someday maybe they’ll meet again.

I think I like that scenario. Two people moving into an uncertain future, not knowing anything except that there’s one other person off in the world who cares for them, and one day the road might lead them back to each other. I think that’s sweet and could work for them.

And this also only works if i consciously ignore that Julia and Rosaly are identical, which I choose to do for my own mental health.

In little moments between packing, moving, unpacking, working, and the general holiday hustle and bustle, I've been playing/reading The Arcana. I've fallen hopelessly in love with this little story, the lore surrounding it, and the playable character I've crafted in my head. As a result, I've used my warm-up time recently to do a little drawing of her. Meet my amnesiac apprentice, Nerissa Helias. 💚

Her design is inspired by Megara from Disney's Hercules, and here are several fun facts about her that I've come up with as I've played:

Nerissa's favorite ice cream flavor is cafe anise.

Nerissa's favorite fruits are pomegranates.

Nerissa's favorite season is autumn.

Nerissa's favorite color is a jewel tone purple.

Her birthday is December 24th, and her MBTI is INFJ-T.

She had taken classes on traditional Vesuvian belly dance.

Besides divination, she is also skilled with painting and gardening.

She is optimistic and lives perpetually with rose-tinted glasses.

She is deeply romantic and submerges herself fully in experiences.

Community and hospitality are very important to her.

Her grace diminishes greatly with heightened emotions.

She is quick to tear up (or sob) over just about anything.

Her familiar is a violet-backed starling named Kore.

Her patroness is The Fool, but her favorite card is the VI of Cups.

Though native to Vesuvia, her parents are nomadic and write often.

She began falling for Julian's smile dedication during the Plague.

(Though, at the time, she had been in a relationship with Asra.)

Currently, she aspires to become a respected local alchemist.

I have this mental room full of characters I've created that hold an extremely special place in my heart - such as Ravani, Olwyn, Miasre, and others that you will see very soon around here - and Nerissa has been quick to join them. I love love love her. Sharing her here also gives me an opportunity to continue optimizing my social media workflow, as I keep ending up with duplicate posts. 😑

literally the sweetest boyfriend ever, he treats you so good. he’s so gentle and loving with you, your heart melts every time you’re with him.

he doesn’t get jealous that often and neither do you, the two of you trust each other and have a relationship that’s really built on honesty and loyalty.

riven ✿

no one would’ve thought the two of you would get together, as riven has a high temper and you pretty much have no temper, always calm and relaxed. in fact, the only people that suspected something was going on with the two of you were bloom and sky, they always took notice of the flirty comments and subtle touches between the two of you. however, ever since you’ve announced your relationship with the hotheaded specialist, you’ve been extremely happy with him, and your friends started relaxing exactly how much sense the two of you make.

you’re a balanced couple that occasionally has rough patches, as riven can get really jealous and insecure, but you guys always make it out and your love grows even more. riven loves you and never wants to make you feel less than appreciated.

his favourite date with you consists of literally anything that involves you two being near each other, but he especially loves when you and him help your friends defeat the newest villain. he also loves when you cuddle with him, as he’s really just a softie deep down, constantly wanting to be touching you. he’s a huge fan of pda, unless you’re uncomfortable with it.

you and helia go together so well, no one was surprised when the two of you made your relationship official. your both calm and loving people, quickly becoming one of the best couples out of your friend group.

you love his hair so much. he just lets you run your fingers through his hair and style it into stupid little ponytails and buns, the man not even complaining about it, actually secretly enjoying it.

he’s literally the best boyfriend. he is always at your side when you need comfort and he gives you all his love.

timmy ✿

it took a while for timmy to build up the courage to ask you out, but once he did, you happily said yes.

the two of you are the definition of ‘opposites attract.’ you’re outgoing and a social butterfly, compared to timmy, who’s shy and doesn’t talk to many people aside from his friends.

he isn’t a big fan of pda, but behind closed doors, he’s always wanting to be close to you.

New headcanons!!!

Sky has dimples. They are only visible whenever he laughs.

Lady—Sky's pet dog—was a present from Princess Krystal, the princess of planet Lynphea.

Stella has two moles on her right shoulder and one on her left breast.

Brandon has a cleft chin. He inherited this gene from his father. Brandon also has huge scars on his face, results from being slashed by a dagger to defend his prince.

Out of everyone, it is Brandon who gets awful nightmares the most.

Riven has a huge scar on his left bicep. He got this when he was being belittled by older kids in his younger years, one of them slashing his arm with a stick. He also has a small scar on his bottom lip.

Timmy has nearsightedness, therefore the existence of his glasses. His glasses are not ordinary, however. They can be quite handy in certain situations since it is made by technology.

Timmy also knows how to play Cat's Cradle. His usual playmate in this game is Helia.

Flora is allergic to bunnies. Because of this, she avoids Kiko at all times. Flora's allergic reaction is sneezing.

Tecna is farsighted, therefore she cannot read or see things clearly that are near her eyes. However, she does not like wearing glasses as she prefer lenses.

Helia often suffers through what artists usually do. And in writing poetries, he loves writing angst (what a mood).

Musa can speak Cantonese. Despite not knowing languages in Earth, the people in planet Melody can somehow speak both Cantonese and Mandarin.

Although constantly being healed, Icy has frostbites due to her powers. They sometimes backfire, resulting to frostbites on her fingers.

Darcy actually loves to watch Rom-coms, but it eventually turns into a guilty pleasure.

Stormy is the youngest out of the triplets, so she tends to act the most immature and demanding of them all. Still, the sisters don't seem to mind.

Codatorta and his kids

Codatorta & Riven:

Is particularly hard on Riven to get him to achieve “his potential”.

Does look after the younger man, though: makes sure he always has a place to go to once the school goes on break, invites him for dinner with Codatorta’s family on holidays, etc.

Riven is the only one who doesn’t know that he is Codatorta’s real favourite.

Codatorta & Nabu:

Doesn’t even try to hide how much better he thinks Nabu is compared to his students.

”You all should be more like Nabu” this, “I want Nabu to enrol in Red Fountain, please please please” that

Nabu calls Codatorta “daddy 🥺” jokingly and although the older man yells at him for it, he is the only one who doesn’t get beaten up for name-calling.

Codatorta & Helia:

A very respectful, caring relationship.

Although Codatorta at least tries to appear professional with the rest of the gang, he gives up all pretences with Helia.

C’mon, he has known the younger man since the latter was a kid in diapers. Seen him go through hardships, make mistakes and flourish in spite of them. How could he pretend to be anything but wholly on Helia’s side?

Protective of Helia like a little brother. In turn, Helia cares for Codatorta and looks up to him.

Codatorta & Timmy:

the bemused mentor & the over-achieving, comedically ill-timed mentee.

For a long time, Codatorta dismisses Timmy for one of the rich kids who are in it for the rank and the mantle, and treats him coolly.

Timmy desperately tries to prove himself — but because he is so edge around Codatorta, only makes the impression worse. Amy Santiago style.

Only when Timmy stops caring about Codatorta’s opinion and really comes into his own as a specialist — being his quietly bad-ass, confident self — only then does Codatorta start to respect him.

They don’t speak of the shift in their dynamic, but Codatorta begins to entrust Timmy with more challenging tasks and relies on his insight more.

Codatorta & Brandon:

The tired grump dad & the middle child.

Codatorta does actually like Brandon and thinks he makes for a very honourable specialist

But he hates hates hates Brandon’s clown-assery.

Most of their interactions are Brandon trying to be/being funny and Codatorta punishing him for it (and for the man’s ongoing headaches) with exercises.

Once in a blue moon, they do have sincere moments, where both learn a bit from each other.

Codatorta & Sky:

Some (Riven) might mistake Sky for Codatorta’s favourite, because the older man dedicates a lot of his personal time to teaching & advising the prince.

But this is mostly because Sky is one of the only princes, and heirs to a significant empires at that, under Codatorta’s care - and he wants his charge to become a decent man before he inherits the throne.

So Codatorta tries to make Sky wise, selfless, smart, a leader

But Sky is also stubborn as fuck and is responsible for half of Codatorta’s grey heirs alone — so heck no, he is not the favourite .

so to summarise:

all the interactions between Codatorta and the specialists are, of course, Platonic.

Hi, I want to ask your opinion on something. You made a post that said changing the Winx's races is bad. I agree that it's not okay but I have a question about Helia. I thought he was Native American when I was a child but you've said he's Asian. Is it wrong to think he's Native American?

I had to think about how to answer this for a while tbh! Sorry for the late reply

Anyway, I probably could answer this with a simple yes or no but I really feel like I should explain my answer.

I'm pretty sure you're referencing this post! Anyway, the biggest issue with race changing the canon characters of color is that when you do it, you're participating in erasure. Again, it's not more representation to, for example, make Flora asian - it's erasure because you're intentionally erasing her being latina. Now like I said, I don't have an issue with like,, children not noticing their canon races or ethnicities. It's perfectly fine if a little kid sees characters as something else! The problem is grown adults ignoring and erasing their canon races.

When it comes to Helia specifically, he is very much coded as asian, specifically east asian. I want to clarify that it's not explicitly canon. Rainbow has never stated what race he's supposed to represent and they've never said if he was based on a real person. We don't even know what planet he's actually from! So his race is all coding. However, that coding is still,,, fairly obvious. And I specifically want to touch on how Rainbow depicts their east asian characters versus their indigenous characters.

Most of their east asian characters have either dark blue, black, or brown hair and more narrow eyes. Like,, that's their go-to when trying to make a character Noticeably asian. They're also fond of putting their asian characters in traditional clothing (like qi pao or hanfu) rather than casual clothing. I added Helia at the very bottom so you can see how he compares to other, canonically asian characters.

While Rainbow has absolutely depicted asian characters in offensive ways (espero...), it's usually pretty respectful. Meanwhile,,, their depiction of indigenous characters is... anything but.

Like before, I put a picture of Helia so you can compare him to the canonically indigenous characters. As you can see here, their depiction of indigenous characters is,, extremely racist! It follows a lot of racist stereotypes like red skin, face paint, headdress, feathers, etc. Just,,, all around Not Good. And you'll notice that Helia doesn't really "fit in" visually. That's not to say that he has to look like that to be indigenous but remember that this is an animated show with intentional designs made by white people. If he was meant to be seen as indigenous, he would likely share more characteristics with these characters (like having darker, red-toned skin). Again, their depiction of indigenous characters is extremely racist. I don't think there's a single indigenous character in winx that doesn't look like a walking stereotype out of an old cowboy film. Unfortunately, Helia would absolutely look different and more like those racist designs if he was meant to be indigenous.

Now, to actually answer your question. Is it okay to see Helia as indigenous, and specifically indigenous to the americas? Well... as Helia's racial coding is still just coding and not explicit, it's not a crime if you don't see him as asian. Like,, while I do absolutely think he was meant to be seen as asian, it's still technically ambiguous enough that it's not a Bad thing if you don't see him as such.

That said, you need to be extremely careful with how you think of and portray Helia as indigenous. I've talked before about Rainbow including quite a few stereotypes about east asian men with Helia, and unfortunately, most if not all of them, can also apply to indigenous men. For example, Helia is calmer and wise (often shown to give advice in poetic ways), connected to nature (ie, birds, plants, Flora), frequently meditates, etc. These are all common stereotypes for indigenous men. I'd actually recommend reading this wikipedia article!

Anyway, seeing him as indigenous isn't inherently wrong, but there's absolutely a chance that you're picking up on indigenous stereotyping rather than coding or a headcanon. Like the long hair, connection to nature, the pacifist comment, the weird and kind of cryptic one-liners he occasionally has... Unfortunately, a lot of the indigenous!Helia headcanons/redesigns I've seen have been really racist. And the common reasoning for why they think he's indigenous often comes down to these common stereotypes.

So like,,, god I know this is long but honestly the answer is complicated. It's not a simple yes or no. It really, really depends on why you think he's indigenous. Like. Just ask yourself yknow? Why do you think this? Think of an actual reason that isn't just "vibes". And if you're creating any kind of content, even if it's just daydreaming tbh, how are you depicting him? Is there even the slightest hint of a stereotypical depiction? (And again, please research stereotypical depictions because there are a lot and quite a few contradict each other)

If you're confident that you're not stereotyping him, then honestly, it's not that bad to see him as indigenous. I do ask that you try to see and understand him being asian coded, as I do think that's important, regardless of whether or not it's in your face explicit. However, it's not like. a crime if you don't see him as asian. Just be very, very, Very careful with how you think of and portray indigenous!Helia.

Also,,, I didn't know quite how to fit this into the rest of the post but,, while it's not Bad for you to not see Helia as asian, you should think about why that is. For example, there are still a lot of people in the fandom who don't see Nabu as asian, despite his coding being extremely in your face and honestly canon at this point. But because he has darker skin, he's from Andros, and he was with Aisha, a lot of people assumed he was black. That's not inherently a bad thing, but some of those people get really mad when others point out that he's very much south asian which,,, is a bad thing. I understand the feeling of losing rep and wanting to protect that, but you shouldn't bulldoze other groups to do it.

I'm not sure what your opinion of asian Helia is, but if you're like,, against him being asian or refuse to see that very intentional coding just because you really like the idea of him being indigenous,, you should think about that and reassess things.
