Aiight, where my fellow Hufflepuffs at? Ya'll here? Great, everyone else shut up because we need to have a Conversation about our house mascot.

So the Hufflepuff House Mascot is a badger, right? But what KIND of badger? Because that's a really important question for what personality I think Helga Hufflepuff had.

You see, your stereotypical sweet cuddly badger is the European Badger, which is adorable and looks like it's about to invite you over for cookies and a chat:

Very precious. Now. If I'm being logical and objective, this fluffy baby is the mascot. It's the kind you'd find in England which is, you know, where Helga lived. It's the one depicted in basically all merch. And it's looks and demeanor definitely match the stereotypical Hufflepuff.

But the rest of you Puffs all know that just because the stereotype is "sweet, honest, approachable, maybe a bit naive" does not mean we can't be. . .for lack of a better term, a bunch of scary motherfuckers. You need someone who'll commit murder, hide a body, pull an elaborate long con, or stand up to a stereotypical mean girl for you without asking questions and a suspicious amount of enthusiasm, then you get yourself a Hufflepuff.

Which brings me to my next point. The American Badger. These guys are. Um. A little meaner. Just. Take a look:

Bigger, scruffier, tougher, and definitely more willing to throw paws. The American Badger, I feel, better represents what a lot of Puffs are actually like. Can it be cute? Sure. Does it still look all round and sweet? Definitely. Is it also absolutely terrifying? Yeah.

And of course, I would be remiss if I did not bring up the honey badger. If a European badger is inviting you over for tea and an American Badger is chasing you off its property with a pitchfork, the Honey Badger is hunting you down and beating you up for drug money in a dark alleyway:

Now, my point is not that the American and Honey badgers are superior mascots to the European Badgers. My point is that all three are actually appropriate, as they represent the different natures of Hufflepuffs, and the different facets of our house founder.

Hufflepuffs do value hard work and loyalty and kindness and love and fair play, but those things can manifest themselves in a lot of different ways. Some people excel at being approachable and sweet friendly, but others express these values by being willing to murder for you. Some are best at tough love and keeping everyone honest and on the right path, even if it's something you don't want and they have to he mean about it. Others still are protective and have something to prove and come across really angry as a way to take care of others.

Hufflepuff is also a really diverse house. Helga was a woman who was willing to take every student. That includes those who were rough around the edges and didn't fit into another nice box. As a consequence, we also have some of the most diverse ways of expressing our house values.

My point is that, like the animal that is our mascot, hufflepuffs have a lot of variety to them. And I think it would be cool if we started using these different badgers in our art and marketing. A european badger is the Hufflepuff who's ready to make friends and give you a hug. An American badger is the Hufflepuff who grits their teeth and steels themselves and deals with whatever unpleasant hand they've been dealt, and manages to keep their chin up anyway. And the Honey Hadger is the Hufflepuff who sees someone in need of protecting or an injustice that needs to be righted and fiercely jumps into the fight.

This is based on the multiple Sigyn interpretations I've seen so far :

Asgardian! Sigyn basically is an archetype of a ' proper feudal lady ' - likes to play the harp and crochet and such, but she also has nerves of steel and has powerful magic that she learns in her seidr training years

Vanir! Sigyn grew up amongst the tribal culture of the Vanir, and knows green magic and pastoral nomadic life at the back of her hand. As skilled as she is in archery, she's more of a healer and becomes skilled in healing magic

Alfheimr! Sigyn is this ' oddball girl ' who enjoys dancing with the fireflies and has flowers on her hair. An avid reader and scribe who is also a cunning strategist, and also has hyper hearing which helped her eavesdrop some valid information

Dwarven! Sigyn is a petite curvy dwarven lady who is skilled in culinary magic and blacksmithing. Basically Helga Hufflepuff vibes in spades

As soon as he was in front of her she ducked, reached for the waistband of his pajama bottoms, and whisked them down to his ankles. She took his left arm with her left hand and turn him around, naked bottom facing her. “Give me your right hand too,” she commanded, “I don’t want it interfering.”   Bill raised his right hand up over his head. She grasped both his wrists in her huge hand and forced them up. That move made his pajama top to rise till his lower back so that it was in a position where it wouldn’t interfere with the switch. For a moment Helga admired the two milk-white hillocks in front of her. They were chubby and plump and looked so vulnerable in their clenching and unclenching frightened move. Then she steeled herself and raised the fearful instrument of correction. Helga began with a few slow taps switch just to line things up.  After that, the switching began in earnest.

SWISSHHH!  SWISSHHH!

The first couple of licks saw the keen switch wrap all way around his thighs. Bill let out an anguished cry and tears started to flow from his eyes. This felt very different from a hand spanking.  With the hand, the impact of each palm spank seemed harder, and the spanks hurt, but they never stung with the intense fire the switch was producing. If Bill was nervous before his punishment began, he was terrified now.  His bottom burned with the fire of pure hell

SWISSHHH!  SWISSHHH! SWISSHHH!  SWISSHHH!  SWISSHHH!  

Helga started at top of his hips and worked all way down above his knees slashing the switch with a steady rhythm, crisscrossing the entire surface of his bottom and top of his thighs. The level of his distress elevated rapidly. With each new stroke, his body jerked, his legs kicked, and a steady high wail escaped his open lips. Again and again, that horrible punishing branch hit the tender flesh of Bill’s rear end painting thin burning red stripes.

SWISSHHH!  SWISSHHH! SWISSHHH!  SWISSHHH!  SWISSHHH!   “ARGGHHHHH!  BWUAAAAAAA! NOOOOOOO! PLEASEEEE! ARRGHHHHHHH!”

Bill mastered a kind of savage ‘war dance’ while the switching was in progress. Compelled by the atrocious stinging sensation caused by the switch on all his poor rear end, he was jumping up and down and around in a circle begging her determined chastiser to please, pleaseeee stop that excruciating punishment but it fell on deaf ears. With a solid grip on both his wrists and not losing a beat despite his frenzied movements, Helga kept slashing down the switch with vigor.

SWISSHHH!  SWISSHHH! SWISSHHH!  SWISSHHH!  SWISSHHH!  

Midway Helga stopped and asked him if he was learning anything from this. Chocked by sobs he heartily answered, “Yes…yes ma’am! I have. I swear I have! BWUAAAAAA! Please…please no more. My bum is afire!” “We will see.” Was her only response then she raised the switch and resume his correction.
