Eurovision 2006: The Interval Act and Other Performances
From the outset, ERT is putting Greek history and culture at the forefront of its musical offering at Eurovision. It kicks off with perhaps one of the greatest opening musical montages in Eurovision history. A host of camp versions of mythological Greek figures act out Eurovision songs from the past including Nel blu dipinto di blu and Save Your Kisses for Me. There's nothing quite like witnessing Prometheus taking fire from the gods while miming along to A-Ba-Ni-Bi to tell you that Eurovision has arrived.
Our two hosts join in with the final rendition of Love Shine a Light as the pantheon is raised high above the stage. Straight from the overture and into the main body of the night seamlessly.
The small breaks in the running order to let the stage crew have a small breather are simple cutaways to the green room (semi-final) and time lapsed montage footage of the behind the scenes preparations - something that is almost a tradition at this point.
The interval for the semi-final is the traditional local dance culture, ranging from swirly-skirted women rotating, to the more linear Greek line dancing. Pan makes an appearance with a flute in what looks like the middle of a labyrinth - although that's myth-mixing, so I'm not sure I'm correct.
The final also opens with a bang. There's a sun full of Icaruses that slowly approaches the stage like a meteorite threatening the Earth in a 1950s B-movie. I'm not sure what health and safety assessments were required to strap at least twelve gold painted men to a massive globe suspended from the ceiling then winch it hither and thither through the air, but I hope their skimpy gold trunks were unsoiled. It looks terrifying.
While this is occurring, Foteini Darra is singing a piece composed especially for the opening of the final - The Mermaid Song - which has some of the most forced lyrics I've heard. There's a ballet going on around her to represent the sea and the wind. For a finale, resplendent in a white suit, Sakis enters on wires descending from the roof in a John Travolta pose. Maria enters similarly on wires, but she has a whole lot more trepidation and less élan floating around above the massive audience. You can sense her relief when she reaches the stage and her harness is removed by the ballet dancers.
This is followed by our first dose of Helena Paparizou for the evening, opening with a reprise of last year's winning song My Number One. She's back as the voting is taking place to perform her big Greek hit Mambo! The voting sequence itself is launched by former Luxembourg Eurovision representative Nana Mouskouri, born on Crete and one of Greece's most famous contemporary figures.
The main interval is another ballet/dance sequence commissioned by ERT for the evening. This one is 4000 Years of Greek Song which takes in everything from chants from Oracles, through a sequence that seems to imply that Greece taught birds to sing. The are larger than life puppets, and a section that's approaching but isn't quite Zorba the Greek.
The highlight is that opening mix of Eurovision's past. It's possibly the first show-opening medley of songs that I can remember and definitely one designed to highlight the stage and get you in the mood both for Eurovision itself as well as a night of siting in an amphitheatre watching Greek culture.

What a wild show UMK just was! At the end of it all, Windows95man will be representing Finland at this year’s Eurovision with No Rules. I felt that this was a very even contest so although I did put him last on my ranking, I’m happy with this result. The performance was absolute chaos in the best way, pushing the energy of the song to its limits. I wasn’t convinced by the very opening with the egg, I felt it was a little slow to open up and reveal them, I wanted them to burst out of it on the first ‘No Rules’ but I had no complaints for the rest of the performance. The discrepancy between the jury and the televote for Windows95Man was understandable but also very funny. It did kind of kill the tension in the televote reveal for everyone else because I was sure no one else could match that point total and I was right. (Sidenote: Sini Sabotage was done so dirty by the televote, she deserved to do better in my opinion). I expect the low jury/high televote to be mirrored at Eurovision itself, but if Finland replicate this performance at Eurovision it should take them straight to the final!
I had such a blast watching the entire show – the English commentator certainly added some spice to it, he was very entertaining. I thought I could not love Cha Cha Cha any more but Käärijä proved me wrong with his performance! I honestly got emotional watching it. I also loved the performance right before with Erika Vikman, their new song is great. It was also lovely to see Katri Helena singing her first Eurovision song. Thank you Finland for a great show!

In anticipation of today's Winner, I wanna share my three all time favourite Eurovision acts
1. Ruslana - 🇺🇦 Ukraine - 2004 - Wild Dances
youtube
An absolute LEGEND. Queen gave it her all. This is such a powerful performance. A true classic. She is powerful and she commands the stage.
2. Helena Paparizou - 🇬🇷 Greece - My Number One - 2005
youtube
This is not out of national bias. She is an absolute legend. The Lyra part is one of the most iconic gimmicks in the history of the contest. She looks hot, she can sing, she can dance. Amazing.
3. Sertab Erener - 🇹🇷 Turkey - Everyway That I Can - 2003
youtube
This is actually the first winner I have childhood memories of. The first show I actually watched was 2004 but I still remember seeing her on TV afterwards. At the time I couldn't understand the lyrics and, admittedly, a woman begging for her lover to get back with her is not it BUT! Hear me out. Sertab is such a commanding force on stage that it cancels out the sexism. Yes she is begging for her former man but, I mean look at her. She is powerful, she is a queen. She will fuck him up if he tries anything funny. The impact of her iconic dance break is still felt today, I mean Sacha Jean-Baptiste literally had Remo Forrer do the exact same bondage thing this year, and the part where she goes "HA!" before belly dancing is peak Eurovision.
Y'all are either too young to remember them or have shit taste, because I barely see them get the recognition and acknowledgement they deserve online and I'm here to change that.
This was the strongest string of consecutive girl boss winners and I honestly can only hope we can ever reach this level of excellence again. Sing in your native language, sing in English, sing in Swahili, I don't care, just PLEASE bring in girl bop songs with an ethnic vibe much much more often and then PLEASE, tasteless Europe, show proper respect to the actual Queens of the contest and vote for songs like that more often and give them higher placings!
That's the herstory lesson for today. Dismissed.

4, 27, 30, 43, 69, 80, 99!
4. "Fake Your Death" by My Chemical Romance. MCR are my whole top 5 this year because I'm having an emo phase
27. "Do I Wanna Know?" by Arctic Monkeys. I think this is one I got from a @the-girl-with-the-algebra-book playlist originally!
30. "Bleed Out" by The Mountain Goats. Hey Syb remember when we went to see the goats on their Bleed Out tour promoting the Bleed Out album and they didn't play Bleed Out? Great show anyway though
43. "Someday You Will Be Loved" by Death Cab for Cutie. Most if not all of these listens were probably on my first Our Flag Means Death playlist!
69. "Helena" by My Chemical Romance
80. "Love You to Death" by Type O Negative. I have @grandmastattoo to thank for getting me into this band by showing me the lead singer's dick
99. "Odium" by Lord of the Lost. These guys made my #4 artist largely because I have a friend who made me watch Eurovision and then I listened to "Blood and Glitter" about a million times

Eurovision 2024. Hmmm
I usually take my time to contemplate the contest. This year, I'm took longer than usual. I wrote the below document months ago, but never had the will to send it into the Tumblr world.
Things have happened, people have said things, people aged and I got Covid for the first time. But the lingering thought of Eurovision 2024 is still there. While it feels very real and very raw now, that booing, Bambie, Joost and the Martin thing etc will most likely be forgotten by viewer and except for Eurovision tragic like myself. I'm not going to focus on that stuff.
Let's start from the beginning. The Eurovision of 2024 was held in Malmo Sweden for the second time following Loreen's win. Sweden have said that they have won the Eurovision seven times numerous times and while there was a shine and a sparkle, there were disappointments and corners cut which annoyed me.
Postcards recorded on mobile phones. How is that a good experience for a viewer? Some were fine, others were posing, others may have never seen a mobile telephone in their life. People spend too much time taking selfies and filming themselves being dumb and this encourages it (until they walk into the traffic and are placed in traction).
The stage. Clever and interesting stage which had great screens everywhere. Conspiracy theorists would have said that the stage design told us the winner would be Switzerland (a big cross) from the beginning and saved us 9 hours. Most of it was highly under-utilised and some acts went everywhere and made their stage look messy.
The interval acts. I feel a bit annoyed by the return of former artists singing the same songs. Kudos to Benjamin Ingrosso for singing new material. Otherwise, repeat performances from Eleni Foureira, Eric Saade, Chanel, Charlotte Nielson, Helena Paparizou, and Sertab Ererer. The performance from Loreen in a convoluted chair was the worst. I didn't even realise she had moved from her new song to Tattoo because she was mumbling so much. We got another humorous song from Petra, but how many versions of the same song can you have? Which brings us to...
The Hosts. They were an interesting choice and for me it was like watching newsreaders from Korea. Malin presenting the South Korean manner of calm and Petra somewhat aggressive, louder and shrieking of the North. Petra proved she can speak in an appropriate manner, but when the soft spoken Malin was there, Petra seemed a bit passive aggressive. The show went well with their guidance though.
Camerawork I'm not sure about this one. Either the artists/people in charge of songs were not taking advantage of the camerawork or the SVT people were all over the place. I want to put it down to inexperience of the participants, because others were very precise. I don't understand why they (the host broadcaster) do not make suggestions for a better television show.
Which brings us to the songs. A mix of diverse, buoyant, gritty, hard, soft, silly, fun, forgettable, strange, wicked and sensible which combined to create an interesting journey of music. I cannot say that all of them are to my taste. It is rare you will locate a person who would enjoy every entry in a year, and if you do, you deserve a prize.
It is officially award season on my site. Let the extensive crap shoot begin.

2005 - final
originally posted 7/23/20
United Kingdom Hmm. Javine is not an objectively bad singer, this is not an objectively bad song, the staging is not objectively bad either. It just doesn't come together in a way that I enjoy. I'm struggling to find words or emotions for this one - I guess I really liked the bridge here? Shame it had to be in the hell slot. Malta Chiara has a very distinctive voice, especially when she goes high. It sounds like something I shouldn't like, but here it helps the song stand out for me. Angel is a very good song as well and the simplicity of the staging really works here. Back to Chiara, though, I do think her stage presence is a little weird. There's a sass to her that really worked to her advantage in her 2009 entry but I think hampers the sincerity of Angel - the head moves, the winking, idk it feels cheap. Turkey I like the verses here. Rimi Rimi Ley seems to suffer from the same "either your mic is fucked up or you're super out of breath" effect that so many of this year's contestants are dealing with. There's also just so much going on here visually. I'm all for people wearing their traditional dress, but this particular combination of hot pink and green was not easy on the eyes. Albania Another one I struggle to find thoughts on. Ledina is fun to watch, she has a good voice and an animated, engaging stage presence. The lyrics here are a little weird though especially in the beginning. The song musically is... it's okay? I like the rock-inspired stuff Albania sends so there's that. Cyprus I think it's alright. The song is nothing special - which is okay because it means it doesn't stand out for being bad either. Constantinos is maybe not the best performer ever, though. The staging appears to rely on him looking hot - and it kind of works, tbh? I like aspects of the staging too, I liked how subtly shiny everything was and the mirrors, especially at the beginning. Spain Not bad! Honestly I was concerned that this was going to be much worse. I really liked the way the singers used their costumes, it was fun to watch! And I enjoy the song too, it's catchy and it's distinctive and it's Spanish. I feel like I would have liked this a lot better if it were just the girls onstage though. I don't really know what the rapper guy was doing there.
Serbia & Montenegro I like the harmonies here. The song is a little bit repetitive but that's not too much to its detriment. Staging here is a little weird but I guess there's not too much you can do with staging on a relatively small stage with a six member band. Sweden Honestly, this is probably one of the flashiest songs of the evening. The dancers and the music and the rest of the staging and Martin's vocals and performance all rolled together make a performance truly as flashy as Las Vegas - or, at least, the way people glorify it. Ukraine God, I love when politics find their way into the actual songs. This is actually a pretty good entry? I know it didn't score that well, but idk I kinda like it. Ukrainian revolution rap-rock? Yeah sure I'll take it. Staging was a little weird... but honestly, I imagine this was a hard song to stage. This is just a style that's not often seen at Eurovision and so I can see this being difficult to put together. Germany Absolutely deserving of last place imo. Gracia's voice is just... annoying, and while the song itself is a pretty standard 2000s female number her voice and the way this is filmed and staged lead me to just hate it. Greece THOROUGHLY enjoy this one. Helena is doing a really good job of keeping her vocals stable, even throughout that demanding dance routine. It is, for the most part, a good dance routine at that! Idk, sometimes it's weird to see ESC winners in the context of their year because they're so often removed from that, and so as much as I love this, idk if I like it AS MUCH as some of the other performances. We'll just have to see. Russia I like the song and Natalia's voice. I can't understand most of what she's saying though, and tbh I was a little distracted by just how much of her hair was in her mouth by the end of the performance. Like, I can't believe she could sing through that. Bosnia & Herzegovina There's so much happening so quickly - like, this song is really just so fast. Femminem, as with their 2010 entry, have really good vocals that lock in their harmonies nicely, but the frenetic pace of the song and staging drags this one down for me. France The instrumental to this goes HARD, especially at the beginning, but unfortunately Ortal can't match it. Her vocals are very breathy, rarely on pitch, and honestly kind of sad. Staging's weird too. My top 39

Voting/intervals Why didn't Ruslana open with Wild Dances? I mean, the sight of her with a torch sure did awaken something in me but like... it's tradition. Does Pavlo not know about the 1969 four winners thing? Like, no, the fiftieth winner of Eurovision was actually a few years ago, this is just the fiftieth contest. I think one of the funniest moments out of all of this is, when Masha is done talking to Svante, you just see Pavlo fucking booking it up to the stage, and then he hops up there and Masha is like "Oh! Here he is again." Idk that just fucking sends OMG, having everyone announce points one at a time takes for-freaking-ever. They used to do this every year???? Thoughts after watching My first thought is, like, it seems a number of countries had issues with their mics this year? Wth Ukraine? Pavlo and Masha are... not so great hosts. They kept talking over each other and didn't seem to have the greatest script either. Quality of the songs... not as good as 2007 or even 2006 but tbh not the worst year. I maintain that 2018 and 2011 were the lowest points in terms of quality. Stage was relatively unimpressive but I don't really have any problems with its design. I'm gonna be taking a break from these reviews for a little while - I might watch 2004 first but I'm not sure. It's starting to feel like work to me, and I don't want it to feel that way!

What was that event that Helena and Elena were at last night?
(they were shown last night but recorded like two weeks ago)
That was the MAD Video Music Awards (MAD being the TV channel behind them). They give awards to the best music videos of the previous year and they also have best performer categories
The show features a LOT of ~live~ performances and part of their shtick is doing duets
Honestly, as a TV show, they're bad. No one actually sings live, and I guess one could argue they're music video awards , not singing, but come on, why not? Aren't those supposed to be the best of the last year? It's a waste not to let them sing
The directing is also bad, they can't focus on the actual performers on stage for more than 10 seconds without a shot from the crowd, there's choreography happening on stage and you're looking at the people (this hasn't been such an issue the past 2 editions because part of it was filmed without an audience, so you can see the singers and dancers
The videos are easily found on youtube and they are fun to watch, even if they could easily be better, there's always a lot of Eurovision participants, not only greek/cypriot but they sometimes bring someone else, for example Efendi was there this year
#very likely the next cypriot esc participant was there too#I saw people complaining about this music award show we had last night#and clearly they don't know what goes on other countries#at least those who performed did it live and filomena cautela was hosting#also (and this is from unverified sources) if you win a mad award but don't show up for the ceremony they just give it to someone else
