These are summer apples growing on a plantation where my great great grandfather fought in a battle to help end slavery. The apples are the same historic heirloom variety grown on the property during the battle which took place in the 1860s. My great great grandfather was 24 years old at the time and lost some of his eyesight as a result of his service in the Civil War. So we waited and waited… our trees had a wonderful harvest this year, but the earliest apples are never the sweetest and they’re fairly dry. It’s the apples like these that are the last to come off of the tree that make the best apple butters and juice. They’re the largest and the sweetest of all but they literally won’t let go of their branches. So, Jim and Pancho spent the morning shaking them off the tree… dozens of beautiful sweet and crisp apples fell everywhere… Pancho had a wonderful time chasing them and we got two bushels full. Today they became apple butter with cranberries, orange peel and ginger, and we got several gallons of fresh juice to freeze. We’ll eat this apple butter all winter long slathered on toasted bread and butter and enjoy the sweet juice warmed with cinnamon sticks. My kitchen smells like a bakery… and tomorrow? Meet Tom Brown. This Appalachian apple hunter has Saved 1,200 heritage apples from extinction

We're all accustomed to a small selection these days, choosing between apple varieties like granny smith for those who like a tart flavor, honeycrisp for a sweet taste, and red delicious for a classic. However, few of us ponder just many varieties of apples may taste the best in an apple pie. One apple enthusiast in North Carolina has dedicated himself to rescuing heritage apples, rescuing over 1,000 types from extinction. Tom Brown is a 79-year-old retired engineer who owns an apple orchard in Clemmons, North Carolina. This Appalachian homesteader found a second calling in his efforts to save as many apples from extinction as possible. It all started back in 1998, when Tom took a trip to the farmer's market that would change his life. "There was a little stand with a bunch of strange-looking apples laid out in baskets," he says. At the stand, there were apples the likes of which Tom had never seen.

Tom began talking to the vendor, learning that the apples he was selling were standardized in the 18th and 19th centuries, and had disappeared from the market by 1950. The vendor, orchardist Maurie Marshall, had obtained most of his old varieties personally from mountain homesteaders and apple-hunting expeditions.

Marshall also shared that hundreds of lost apples could be discovered throughout the old orchards of Appalachia through apple-hunting, a fact that Tom Brown took to heart. "That part stayed with me," says Brown.
