heeseung sighed as he unlocked the door to your apartment, the exhaustion catching up to him. he had spent all day in and out of the studio and dance practice room for the boys’ new comeback. he definitely didn’t want to spend his birthday like that but he had no choice.

on top of that, his day didn’t go very well anyway. he couldn’t seem to get the moves right for the choreography, causing the staff to constantly scold him. his voice session wasn’t so hot, either. the day was a disaster and heeseung was over it. he needed a break.

he stepped into your home, the warmth now surrounding him as he settled in. he placed his shoes and bag by the door before walking off to go find you.

“baby?” he called out softly.

“in here!” you responded from the dining room, still setting up the dinner table. heeseung walked in to a simple but romantic set up. small candles lit on the table with two roses on each side where you both would be sitting.

for the first time today, a smile had appeared on his face, the sight warming his heart.

you turned around to greet him, mirroring his smile.

“happy birthday, baby,” you said, wrapping your arms around his neck. he leaned down to peck your lips twice, smile still plastered on his face. he pulled you closer to him, wrapping his arms around your waist.

“this is— so— beautiful. thank you, princess.” he said between kisses. he pulled away slightly, resting his forehead against yours.

you giggled, rubbing your nose against his before pecking his lips one more time.

“i canceled our reservation since i had a feeling you’d be too tired to go out.” you told him, going back to placing silverware on the table.

he shrugged, taking a seat in the chair across from yours, “that’s fine.”

heeseung let his eyes roam the room, taking in the smell of roses and his favorite dish. he could feel the tension leaving his body with every second that passed. after the exhausting day he’d had, the last thing he expected was to come home to something so thoughtful. you always knew exactly what he needed, even before he did.

“and i made something for you,” you spoke, knocking heeseung out of his inner thoughts. you came from the kitchen, carrying a homemade cake sitting in the dish that heeseung’s mom gave you.

heeseung chuckled, shaking his head, “baby, you know you didn’t have to—“

“but i wanted to.” you said, sitting the cake down and blowing him a kiss.

you went back to the kitchen, getting the pot that had hee’s favorite meal in it and sitting it on the dinner table so you both could eat together.

after dinner, you settled into your bed as heeseung washed up. you put on his favorite movie and placed the shopping bag on his side of the bed. it was filled with a couple of small gifts that he wanted to get for himself but seemed to forget about. but you took it upon yourself to go back and buy him those things.

the bathroom door opened as hee walked back into your shared bedroom dressed in a tee and low gray sweats. his hair hung over his eye but you could still see the tiredness in them.

you pressed play on the movie as he moved to sit on his side of the mattress, smiling at the bag that was there.

“what’s this?”

“open it and find out.” you said, leaning over to peck his cheek.

he pulled out his first gift, opening the small box to see the new cologne that he wanted a few months ago.

“they still had this? no way!” he glanced at you in shock, expecting the spray to have sold out by now.

“guess you just got lucky.” you shrugged. he put the box down before leaving a kiss on the side of your head.

“thank you for tonight, love. you have no idea how much this means to me.” he admitted, sending you a sincere smile.

you wrapped your arms around him, hugging him tightly. he opened the rest of his gifts and you both cuddled for the rest of the night, his head laying on your chest as you both ate the cake you made and laughed at the movie that played on the tv.

heeseung couldn’t asked for anything better than this. his rough day had turned into one of the best nights he’d had in a long time. it wasn’t the grand gestures or extravagant gifts that made him feel loved—it was moments like these. it was the little things that you did for him. he didn’t need anything more than this. just you.

author's note: well, baby's first post. I really hope someone likes this ? my goal is to participate in nanowrimo in my own way so expect weekly posts from yours truly. I was nervous about what to write about bc of it being my first post but I needed to write something or I'd never do it. starting with chan feels right, though I wish I can get to write more fluff soon 😭 this was fun tho! I really like protective and possessive chan<3

You didn’t intend for him to hear. Mostly, because you thought you could handle things on your own, but also because you knew it would somehow end up like this.

You have been visiting the building where the boys work for as long as you remember being in their lives. It’s not your fault, given that they spend almost every waking moment there, working. And the one whose time was taken the most by it happened to be your boyfriend. It was a Saturday and he was working, which wasn’t uncommon, but it also wasn’t healthy. You let it slide sometimes, when you knew time was pressing on him and he needed to be there, for his own peace of mind. But everything was ready for the comeback, there was absolutely no reason for him to spend his weekend locked up in that so-familiar room.

So, you did the only logical thing: went there to drag him out, knowing only you where capable of doing so. No amount of puppy eyes from his kids could do what you could with just asking — you were his girlfriend, after all, it was expected that he’d have a soft spot for you.

You felt the problems creeping on you as soon as you stepped foot in the building. There were new people there, new workers. You hated when new staff started working, because they were still too nosy, and because they would ask too many question, some of which you wouldn’t be able to answer without one of the boys by your side to prove your credibility. It was okay, though, you could only imagine how many girls could go to the front desk and claim what was your truth — “I’m looking for my boyfriend”.

Luckily, the girl at the front desk, Sun Hee, already knew you. She only smiled at you when she saw you enter the building, and her tired smile should’ve been warning enough. You walked to her with a matching smile of your own, she knew you were there to pick up a overworking boyfriend, but you still needed to sign your name in the records.

“hi, lovely! what’s got you tired today?” you asked, curiosity so strong you couldn’t help asking.

“new staff’s first weekend. sometimes I wonder how they got hired in the first place”, she answers truthfully, sighing. She sends you a look you know it’s a warning — beware, idiots walking around feeling entitled!

You sigh, too. That’s going to be troublesome, especially today.

“hope I don’t get to met them today, at least until I find Chan. The boys didn’t warn me, or I would have brought one of them with me”

She showed a sympathetic smile, nodding.

“Prince charming is on studio 3, same as always”, she rolls her eyes playfully.

It says something about your overachieving boyfriend that not only the staff knows where he is all the time, but also that you have almost made friends with said staff. God, you needed to convince him to spend less time working.

After thaking Sun Hee and promising to chat more later, you walked to the elevator, setting to find Chan. You could amost picture him — black hoodie, black beanie hiding his messy curls, and headphones in. You smiled at the image in your head, a much too familiar one, one you loved so much.

Smile still present in your face, you stepped out of the elevator on the corresponding floor, checking different doors that had lights on. You were here to pick up Chan, yes, but you didn’t rule out finding Hyunjin or Felix overworking themselves too. The blondes were quick to follow their leader to the building any day, claiming they always “needed” the extra practice. Jeongin would be just as annoying as they were to you, if it wasn’t for his baby status, which meant everyone took a little more care of him (Minho more than anyone, checking that the boy didn’t overwork himself regularly).

Of course, checking every room as if you didn’t know where you were going to may have looked suspicious, you will give the man that. You were glad he was doing his job, just — well, maybe you were at the wrong place at the wrong time, or maybe he was.

“Excuse me, miss, who are you and where are you going?” He was at least 30 cm taller than you, and he was almost as buff as Changbin. You weren’t intimidated at first, you knew your presence had been cleared for, you had a right to be there, and you had got through the entrance desk, so he must know you were allowed there, right? Maybe he was just trying to help.

“Oh, hi! I’m Y/N. I’m looking for my boyfriend and checking to see if one of his friends is here as well”, you explained.

He stepped closer, almost invading your personal space. You took two steps back.

“Who are you looking for?”, he was eyeing you as if you were suspicious, a threat even. You, who was dressed in a skirt and probably looked like a mouse next to him.

“My boyfriend”, you repeated, “Christopher Bang Chan. He is in one of those studio rooms”, you added matter-of-factly.

“Ma’am, I’m going to have to escort you outside. You shouldn’t be here.” The man said, loudly, like he wanted to be heard. Ah, you thought, he is one of the new ones. It was common, you have seen it happen one too many times — new staff is always trying to prove themselves as good.

You smiled, though you were a little intimidated now. After all, you were alone in a hallway with the man who kept getting closer.

“Why is that? I am allowed here”, you tried to keep calm.

“Look, I don’t know how you passed the front desk, but fans should not be inside the building!”, the man yelled at you, his arm reaching out until he could take you by the wrist, his hold tight enough to bruise.

“Hey! You’re hurting me, stop it. Let me go!” You started struggling, trying to force your arm out of the man’s hold.

“Stop fighting or I’ll call security”, he threatened. You were about to tell him to do so, you’d wait by him until security came there and showed the man that your info was in the system and you were, actually, allowed there. You didn’t get a chance, though, for your boyfriend’s voice reached your ears as soon as the man stopped talking.

“You let her go or I’ll call security myself”, Chan’s voice showed his anger, and as he got closer you saw the determined look in his eyes that made you worry a little. You didn’t doubt Chan was capable of hitting the man if he didn’t let you go right now.

The man, apparently, didn’t notice that, for he did not let go of your wrist.

“I’m so sorry, sir, I’ll have her removed from the building immediately, I don’t know how she got inside.” He was tugging at your wrist, to which you kept quiet. If you expressed how much it hurt, the situation could escalate more than you wanted it to.

“She got inside because she’s allowed to. Now, I said: let her go.” Chan’s voice was ice cold, almost spitting the words at the man’s face. Finally, your arm was free, and you rushed to take your own wrist so as to cover the red marks, evidence of the strong hold the man had on you.

“Why doesn’t she have a pass, then?”

“She doesn’t need one because she’s not a guest. Did you even care to ask about that or check the system? You know, that type of irresponsible behaviour could get you fired — you can’t just go around the building threatening and grabbing people by force!” Chan’s voice got louder near the end.

“It’s okay”, you quipped, putting a hand in Chan’s chest as an attempt to calm him down. He was protective, you knew as much, but he was also a lovely person who you knew didn’t want to get anyone fired. Still, you knew he’d do something like that for you if you asked for it.

That was a wrong move, apparently, because it meant letting him see the marks on your arm.

“what the fuck?” his words were whispered, but it was obvious the anger that came with them. “Man, what is wrong with you? You should have checked before bruising her arm like that! What gives you the right to decide who is and isn’t allowed here?! That’s the front desk’s job, if she’s on the fucking third floor, then I think it’s fucking obvious she passed security. I need your name for I will have to file a complaint about this, grabbing someone like this is violent and no excuse of security can make it right because you are not supposed to even touch here — if you think she is not allowed here, you call security, you do not bruise my girlfriend’s arm.”

Chan’s voice is loud, and he is so close to the man you could tell it is some kind of threat, or maybe show of strenght. The man’s jaw was tense, as if he was ready to argue with the idol himself. You looked around the hallway, not knowing what to do or how to stop this. The man that had grabbed your arm clearly felt too entitled for his own good, and you worried that he might try to turn things physical.

Lucky for you, he didn’t even get a chance to answer before you heard a door open and close quickly, someone rushing out of one of the practice rooms.

You think you have never been happier of seeing the freckles in Felix’s face.

“Chan, everything okay?” sunshine boy asked, putting his arm around you as soon as he was close enough. His voice seemed to get Chan out of whatever state he was in, for he took a few steps back, still not breaking eye contact with the other man.

“Yeah, this dude just grabbed y/n’s arm and bruised her wrist because it’s apparently his first week here and he already feels too entitled.”

Felix looks at you, looking for something in your eyes, before getting closer to his friend.

“Okay, let’s go grab our things and go home to see if she needs to put some ice on her wrist”. He doesn’t let Chan answer before taking his hand with his smaller one, intertwining his fingers and almost dragging him out of there. You’re quick behind them, taking Chan’s other hand to give him some peace of mind.

Felix looks back at you and you smile in thanks. You know your boyfriend is way too protective, but a situation like this had never happened before. It’s good to know he’d do anything to defend you, but you still didn’t want him to get in a physical fight in his workplace.

“Don’t you dare think this gets any of you out of the hook for working on one of your free days, boys.” You reprimand them, hands still intertwined while entering the studio. Chan’s calmer now, his cheeks blushed with what you guess is something akin to embarrassement; you know he doesn’t like getting like this, but sometimes his emotions overpower him. You kiss his cheek, deciding to not comment on the subject until he does so himself. After all, you achieved what you came here to do — collect whichever stray kid had wandered their way to work on a weekend and get them home.

Today’s filming involves many actors and actresses on set, who act like the participants in the game and come together. 

Plus, another child comes to their father’s work. Ha-neul’s little girl, Kang Min-hee, was brought by his wife to visit him and you volunteered to help take care of her. You are not only a set designer but also a nanny. Min-hee is a lovely toddler and is starting school soon. Despite being much older, she likes to play with Hwa-young. 

“Appa!”

Min-hee’s sweet, high-pitched voice echoes through the studio when she sees Ha-neul talking to Si-wan. The people around her laughed because she was too adorable. Ha-neul smiles and waves at his daughter. The actor is dressed up as his character for the show and it’s amazing how Min-hee still recognizes him with long hair. 

You go into the studio and Hwa-young is in your arms. “Darling, appa has to work soon. Let’s go hang out together.” You tell the toddler kindly yet firmly because the atmosphere will change once the cameras are recording. Min-hee understands you and happily skips away from the room. You giggle at her silliness because she cares about playing with her toys, eating food, and giving hugs. 

Inside an empty makeup room is a mess. You aren’t complaining because Min-hee will clean up after herself and you know what to expect when having children around. There are coloring books, block sets, plushies, snacks to munch on, and blankets if anyone wants to nap. You came in prepared because you didn’t want them to get bored. 

Min-hee and Hwa-young enjoy being great friends while you are on the couch, going through your phone. Ha-joon is in a different room, practicing his lines, which is understandable because he is a perfectionist and never likes to mess up. Just you and the kids trying to pass the time. So far, it’s been a chill work day unless you get called by the design team to fix something like the paint of the dormitory or broken pieces of a set. 

After an hour of filming, the director lets everyone have a break. 

You hear the door opening all lively from the main cast members and your husband. You also got elated when you saw Sung-hoon because he came in after you arrived. Min-hee beams and springs up to run to Ha-neul. “Appa! Let’s pway!” Her pronunciations are still not perfect but she knows a lot of words. Ha-neul’s face brightens and he bends down to catch her in his arms. “Yes! Appa can join you!” He exclaims. Once letting go of his daughter, he stands up and she drags him to the spot. 

Hwa-young is doodling on a blank paper while the uncles and aunts gather around the little play zone. Ha-joon sits next to you and watches his baby do her thing. “How is it being a nanny?” He asked. You snickered because you weren’t expecting to have two jobs. You replied to your husband. “Fun. The girls are so cute when they share toys.” You’ve watched Min-hee help Hwa-young build a tower of blocks until it gets taller than them. 

Ha-joon smiles mirthfully. “That’s nice. I wish I could be in your position.” He makes a pout which has you giggling. You gently caress his head. “Well, the people love Jun-ho so it wouldn’t be the same if you get replaced.” You stated the truth because you’ve seen how the fans react to the character. Ha-joon leans his head against your hand and stares at you with endearment. He is loving your touch. “You’re right. I just need another five hours of filming.” Ha-joon groans quietly and digs his nose into your palm. “Aww~” You cooed and understood his exhaustion. 

“Wow, Hwa-young that’s a pretty sun.” Sung-hoon compliments the youngest child’s art—a splatter of yellow and spikes. 

Ha-neul looks over Min-hee’s head, who is sitting on his lap and drawing too. “So beautiful! I wonder if she got her skills from omma.” He compliments the art as well and gives you a smirk. The cast members laugh at your playful eye-rolling. 

Min-hee abruptly shoves her art to Ha-neul’s face. “Look, appa! Pweety?” She asked about her colorful flowers. He gingerly pushes the paper away and looks at it. “It is pretty. Omma would love it.” Ha-neul kindly comments. 

Byung-hun then noticed something. He saw Min-hee staring at Hwa-young with a hint of jealousy when Ha-neul complimented the baby’s sun drawing. Byung-hun tells everyone, “I think someone wanted appa’s attention because he said something nice about her friend.” His statement made them shocked.

Jung-jae raised his brows. “How so hyung?” He questioned.

Byung-hun chuckled before speaking. “I have two kids and my son would get jealous whenever his sister gets more attention. He thinks Min-jung and I favor his sister.” He explained in brief. The youngest of the cast, Yu-ri, smiles at Ha-neul. “Oppa, I believe Min-hee doesn’t like your compliment on Hwa-young.” Her response astounds the man 

Ha-neul turns Min-hee on his lap to face him and gives a small lecture. “Sweetie. Hwa-young is your friend and shouldn’t be upset if I say something nice to her. You both are amazing, but I don’t want you to think appa doesn’t love you. Okay?” He tries to make Min-hee comprehend the purpose of fairness. 

Like a pure yet smart child, she acknowledged by hugging his neck. Ha-neul takes Min-hee into a tighter hug and kisses her head. 

Baby Hwa-young looks up from her drawing to see the precious moment. She shifts her head to see her father has been here this whole time. She squealed which had the adults’ and toddler’s eyes on her. Hwa-young lifts her arms to Ha-joon. 

“Someone also needs her appa’s touch.” You tell the love of your life to grab the little one. Ha-joon laughs merrily and reaches over to Hwa-young. The man gathers his baby into comforting arms. 

Another thing Ha-joon hopes for Hwa-young is to not develop envy.

Heeseung has been coming home late night after night, whether it’s due to schedules or staying behind at the company to produce. With his increasing involvement in the group’s music, he has been spending any free time he can get in the studio writing songs. This has led to you becoming worried about his health and whether he’s eating his meals or not, so you decide to call him on one of these late nights.

“Hey baby what's up? Are you okay?” Heeseung answers the phone, slight concern in his voice because he assumed you would be asleep by now.

“Everything’s alright love, I just wanted to hear your voice that’s all. I haven’t seen you in what feels like ages,” you try to hide the worry and sadness in your voice but Heeseung picks up on it right away.

“I know baby I’m so sorry. With the comeback being only a few weeks old there’s still so much promo to do and I barely get any free time to work on music, which is actually what I’m doing right now.”

“That’s what concerns me though Hee. You’re not coming home until closer to 3am and then leaving by 7am for schedules. I know you really want to have the time to write songs but you also need to consider your well being. Are you even eating properly?”

“I try to but sometimes–”

“You need to always prioritize eating well, especially now with all the traveling and promos you’re doing. I’m really worried for you,” you cut him off, not wanting to hear the excuse he was going to give you.

“I know love, I’ll try to be better with my meals. How about this, I wrap up what I’m doing now and order some food to bring home and we can eat together.” This didn’t sound like a bad idea, especially because it’s been four days since you’ve seen your boyfriend.

“That sounds lovely Hee I can’t wait to see you. Just hurry up since it’s already midnight.”

With that, you two said your goodbyes and hung up the phone call.

As promised, Heeseung showed up a half hour later with food and drinks in his hands.He set the bags down and gave you the biggest hug he could without crushing you.

“I missed you so much baby, I’m so sorry I haven’t been around to hug you and spend time with you.” He nuzzles his head in the crook of your neck, taking in your scent as you smelled like home to him. He had been constantly going day after day; he almost forgot what you smelled like, so he’s glad you called him and brought him back to reality.

“I know bubs I missed you so much too, I’m just glad you’re here and we can enjoy some time together.” You run your hands through his hair, leaving soft kisses on his head.

The two of you pull away, taking the bags of food to the living room to eat. As you two enjoy your meal together, you let Heeseung talk about his recent promotions and trip to LA for KCON. It felt like you two were talking for hours, wanting to catch up on all the things you have missed in the time you hadn’t seen each other.

Once you two finish eating and cleaning up your mess, Heeseung embraces you in another hug, “I’m so lucky to have you as my partner, what would I do without you?”

Before you could respond to him he traps you in a loving kiss, making sure you can feel just how much he adores you.

“I love you so much I hope you know that,” he confesses, pulling away.

“I love you too.”

Yuki: He was a really nice guy. Now that I'm looking back, we were really blessed with the people around us.

Momo: I really think so too. And because of that I wanted to chat with you even more, Yuki!

Yuki: Let's take a bunch of our juniors there to repay the favor. I'm sure he'll be happy to see how successful of a senior you've become.

Momo: Yeah...! If I told my past self that I'd become the Absolute Kings with you he'd be super surprised.

Ok so as a sort of followup to that Yachie drawing, I did one of Yachie as well. I already had a pretty solid idea in mind (though tbh drawing her wasn't as fun as drawing Saki) but I'm overall pretty happy with this drawing.

Artist's Notes;

So I knew that I would never forgive myself if I completely missed the oppurtunity to give Yachie face scales, which is something that I haven't really seen many people do yet. I do feel like I could've pushed it a lot more, but I'm liking the direction my take on her is going.

I also wanted to take this opportunity to talk about some of my headcannons for how Hell's fashion works since I've had this on my mind for a while. So ever since I refined my own design for Zanmu, I really liked the idea of having there be some connection between her and Satori in their clothes because they're both the defacto "leaders" of their respective Hells, and then I had the idea of having Hell's fashion trends mimic real life history where it mimics whatever the upperclassman are wearing in someway? I've always been really fascinated with the idea of how Modern Hell works as a society and also how Old Hell was impacted by it's abandonment, and while I am aware that the animal realm isn't exactly Hell and is moreso it's own thing right next to it, I imagine that there would be some overlap in the fashion and culture due to their close proximity to each other. Of course, I still kept a lot of elements in from Yachie's original design, the only thing I really added to the outfit was the jazzed up sleeves and the bottom of her shirt as well as those cool triangle things ZUN added to her shirt in 19. I also have her some nice and sharp nails since I thought they fit her. I also tried adding some scales onto the tips of her ears though tbh IDK how well they read. Her colour palette also ended up becoming a lot more teal than I had anticipated, but I honestly like it as I love it whenever people make Yachie's colour palette and design a lot more teal. I also wanted to try and differentiate her face from Saki's, though I do plan on experimenting more on how to avoid same face syndrome, as it's a problem that haunts me in my dreams. There's not really much I can say here aside from "hee hee clothing rendering go brrrrrr" and how the Clip Studio Paint charcoal brush is really all you need for any given piece and it is literally the only brush I use aside from the occasional airbrush for lighting (sometimes) and the blend tools. I've been doing a lot more simple character art recently and I've just been waiting for a cool enough idea for a full blown piece.

Though now that I've talked about some of my headcannons about how Modern Hell works, I really just want a Touhou manga spinoff about Modern Hell. Like, please ZUN I'm begging you, just do it, it would be so fucking cool because Touhou 17 is literally the only time in modern Touhou when we've been to Hell proper, does modern Hell have any settlements of Oni and other Youkai? Does it have cities? Towns? Villages? What's the technological level of Hell? How do they keep sinners from pulling a Touhou 17 and summoning a fucking god to save them? Where do all the characters associated with Hell as of right now fit into everything? You can't just drop a character like Zanmu who is stated to essentially be the king of fucking Hell and then not elaborate further on how she fits into the general framework of Hell! Is she officially the king or is this more of a "true mastermind using the official king/ruler as a puppet" type deal? How does the Animal Realm fit into all of this? Did Hecatia purposefully create Hell so it would be right next to the Animal realm? Did it just appear there on it's own once Buddhism started popping off on Earth or was it established once Zanmu established Modern Hell? How long was Keiki a problem for, and how did that affect the rest of Hell? Seriously there are so many unanswered questions here and I don't know if I just need to read an interview Zun had where he was asked these same questions and if so please tell me because these questions have all been stirring in my brain for quite some time and I really wished we'd just get a new fucking manga instead of going over the same settings in Gensokyo over and over and over and over again dear god. Like, I get that there's still a lot to explore with what we already do have, but it would just be really nice to see the Animal Realm get a little more explanation as to how it fits into the overall grand scheme of Gensokyo's worldbuilding because that would just make such an already interesting idea for a setting in Gensokyo so much better.

I'm hoping to get the drawing for Keiki done before Touhou 17's 5 year anniversary, though I am willing to postpone that and take my time on it and I also have something coming up where I won't have access to my main drawing tablet for a while so it might be a while until I post again, maybe, who knows, consistent posting schedule? Who are they, I've never heard of them. I do fully intend on talking about my thoughts on Touhou 17 though, even if it's a day or two late, it's Touhou 17's birthday month so it still counts! Also because out of all the Touhou game anniversaries, this is the one I care about the most because Touhou 17 was the first Touhou game I played and 1CC'd(???) on normal, and even though it has plenty of flaws (i.e. the many missed opportunities for it's gameplay, how unbalanced the mechanics are and also screen visibility), I'm always going to have a bit of a soft spot for it and I think that the game's strengths make up for some of it's weaknesses in my opinion.

jihoon and the comfort of his studio

not a fic! i'm currently experiencing a minor writer's block (hence the lack of posts and activity on my acc the past couple days 🥲) i got this idea but i am physically incapable of putting this into readable, story-like words so here's js.. a ramble 😭 maybe once i'll get unstuck i'll turn this into a drabble tee hee

so let's say you're a light sleeper. like from a young age, you struggled to fall and stay asleep, even in your own bed, so imagine how hard it is for you to fall asleep in unfamiliar settings.

except, you can fall asleep in jihoon's studio js like that.

when you and jihoon first started dating, you told him abt your struggles with falling asleep and staying asleep for long periods of time, which jihoon could relate to bc he was also a light sleeper himself. so the first time he brings you into his studio (which by the way, he doesn't show js anyone) you notice that there's a sofa OVERFLOWING with pillows and blankets. you ask him about and he's js like 'i sleep here sometimes when i'm working overnight' and js casuallyyy mentions that you're always welcome to crash in his studio if you ever have trouble falling asleep.

(when you ask vernon and hoshi a couple months later, you find out that he replaced his dingy, almost 10 year old couch with the newest, most expensive model on the market only a couple weeks after dating you, and he bought a whole bunch of pillows and blankets and made sure to put them through the laundry TWICE. AND he also restocked up on refreshments in his mini fridge except they weren't filled to the brim with energy drinks and caffeinated sugar water, as vernon liked to call them. rather, it was filled with water, almonds, walnuts, chilled chamomile tea as well as chamomile tea packets and and melatonin gummies. apparently, he also learned from minghao different meditation techniques to help a person (you supposedly) fall asleep)

so you become a regular at jihoon's studio now bc of COMFORTABLE IT IS. like you can fall asleep to the clicky clacky noises of his keyboard and his soft humming. he would check up on you every hour or so js to make sure you're doing okay and HIS SOFT SMILE UGHGHHGHG SOMEONE GET ME A JIHOON RN

like this is js jihoon's way of taking care of you. silent actions that might go unnoticed to some people. he cares for you sm like he js wants you to get some rest :((

Once Upon a Lamp

(At the Steve Jobs Building, everyone steps out through the doors to clock out for the night.)

PIXAR INTERN: It’s so incredible to think that Mr. Jobs started Pixar Animation Studios forty years ago today. To think of all those talented artists and wonderful characters who have been a part of the studio over the years.

PETE DOCTER: Yep. If these walls could talk.

(As Docter and the intern leave, the title appears. “Once Upon a Lamp”. On the wall is a photo from “Toy Story 2” featuring Woody, Jessie, and Bullseye from their role-playing scene. In the photo, Woody moves.)

WOODY: Psst, Luxo! Wally B.! You there?

(Luxo Jr. and Wally B. move to Woody.)

WOODY: Is that it? Are they all gone?

(They nod.)

WOODY: Yee-haw!

(He and the others jump out of their photo.)

WOODY: Come on, guys! This is it!

JESSIE: Let’s get the gang! Yodel-ay-hee-hoo!

(In another hallway, Joy wakes up. Others leave their photos as well.)

JOY: (GASPS) There’s the signal. All right, everyone! It’s picture time!

MIGUEL: That’s tonight?

JOY: That’s now.

EMBER: 40-year group photo. And the sun’s going down. Come on. Let’s get going!

WADE: Ooh, I like the attitude.

(Arlo and Spot pop out, the latter of whom scampers off. In another hallway…)

BUZZ: Picture time, guys!

(The Parr family jump out of their photo.)

HELEN: The day is here?

BOB: Yeah, baby!

VIOLET: Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s get going!

(Violet and Dash stop at a picture of Gus and Peck.)

DASH: Wake up! Wake up!

(They pop out. Peck flies out of control past Bo Peep and her sheep walking with Carl Fredricksen, Russell, and Dug.)

DUG: Oh, boy!

(Flik, Atta, and Dot fly past.)

BO PEEP: Yo, Flik! Ladies! Get the folks upstairs!

FLIK: You’ve got it!

ATTA: Let’s go!

(We follow the ants down the hallway and up to the ceiling. On the second floor, Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater race down a hallway in reverse.)

MATER: (reused from “Cars”) Whee-hee!

McQUEEN: (reused from “Cars 3”) Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

(WALL-E and EVE fly overhead.)

WALL-E: Whee!

(As the cars flip forward, Merida and Angus the Clydesdale horse emerge from her picture frame.)

MERIDA: Picture time! Hyah!

(With Merida on his back, Angus gallops off.)

MERIDA: We’re meeting in the lobby!

(The jackalope and lamb bound down a staircase. The jackalope responds to Merida by shooting her a thumbs-up.)

JACKALOPE: (SINGING) …and I think you can do it If you give it a try

(Voyd opens a portal and lets Bass and Treble through.)

VOYD: Let’s go, boys!

(They start to play. The umbrellas ride gusts of wind made by Gale Cumulus.)

GALE: Up you go, fellas!

(As they fly up, the bluebirds fly down from the upper floor. Behind them, Izzy Hawthorne somersaults down, then Marlin, Dory, and Nemo land in her hands, hyperventilating.)

DORY: (reused from “Finding Dory”) Water.

(Izzy rushes away. Nearby, Hank serves drinks to Lumpy the clown, Geri, Mira Nova, and Mr. B. Elinor yells at them.)

ELINOR: What are you guys doing? There’s no time for drinks!

IZZY: Hank! A little help?

(Hank takes a coffee pot from its machine and fills it with water.)

MARLIN: (reused from “Finding Dory”) Just… keep… gasping.

(He lets Izzy drop the fish inside.)

DORY: (reused from “Finding Dory”) Hank!

HANK: (CHUCKLES) Oh, well. I get to carry you again.

(In another hallway, Ercole Visconti faces a jammed beverage vending machine.)

(Riley Andersen, Grace Hsieh, and Bree Young walk past him.)

RILEY: Yikes.

(She says, punching a photo of Jangles. Meanwhile, the Potato Heads enter an elevator, already occupied by Fear, Kitbull, Stu, the Witch, and her crow. Fear lets them enter with an “after you” gesture.)

FEAR: Going down?

(Fear presses the button, only for the group to be stopped.)

ROZ: Hold the elevator! I’ll get there!

MR. POTATO HEAD: (reused from “Toy Story 2”) What?

(In an office, Meilin Lee draws at a desk.)

CELIA: Eat up, girls. We’ve got to look great.

(Celia kisses one snake. Molly Davis opens the door, holding Jessie.)

JESSIE: Let’s move it, ladies!

(As Day and Night struggle to squeeze out of their photo, Luca Paguro, Alberto Scorfano, and Giulia Marcovaldo walk by.)

LUCA: You guys excited for the photo, too?

ALBERTO: You know it.

(They stop.)

(Scud looms over Remy and Emile, about to eat them. Dante scares him away.)

REMY: Nice.

(The reject robots watch the Scare Simulator scene from “Monsters University” on a TV. Among the chiefs and suitors of Clans Macintosh, MacGuffin, and Dingwall, Valentina Ortiz and the Fire Hawks walk past.)

VALENTINA: Come on, guys. You’re gonna have nightmares.

(Johnny Worthington III emerges from the screen, scaring the robots away. They surge past Ernesto de la Cruz and carry him away.)

DE LA CRUZ: Huh? Hey! Hey!

(Uku and Lele watch from their photo, unable to leave it. Thunderclap flies past.)

THUNDERCLAP: You guys need a lift?

(The volcanoes nod. Thunderclap picks up their photo with his talons and flies away. Back at the elevator, Roz slowly enters.)

ROZ: Thanks for holding the elevator, Potato Head.

MR. POTATO HEAD: (reused from “Toy Story 2”) Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever.

BOOSTER: You guys mind if I squeeze in here, too?

(Booster Sinclair Munchapper squeezes himself into the elevator as it closes. In another hallway, Sox follows Anger.)

SOX: Would you like me to play whale sounds to relax to?

ANGER: No. I promise, I’m fine.

(Papá Héctor and Mamá Imelda Rivera come down the stairs. Héctor’s hat falls off. As he and Imelda laugh, Alec Azam takes it in his mouth and runs away.)

HÉCTOR: Hey! Alec! Presto, come get your rabbit!

(They run after him.)

IMELDA: Go, Alec, go!

(Woody laughs while coming up the stairs, then stops and gasps.)

EVELYN: That’s it. Just keep following.

(Evelyn Deavor walks by, hypnotizing Bonnie’s dad with her Screenslaver goggles.)

WOODY: Evelyn? Evelyn! Evelyn, stop it!

(Bonnie’s mom follows.)

BONNIE’S MOM: Don’t worry, Woody. I got this.

(She removes the goggles, then breaks them. Woody faces the wall in front of him and smiles.)

WOODY: Hmm.

(A portrait of Pixar founder Steve Jobs hangs on it. Woody walks up to it and takes his hat off for a moment of respect.)

BUZZ: Hey, Woody? Where are you? We’re in the lobby!

WOODY: Gotta go, but thanks. On with the show.

(Woody leaves. Nearby, a line of characters waits on the stairs. Riding on Hanuman’s back, Woody flies past.)

WOODY: Whoa!

(Disgust opens the door.)

DISGUST: Coast is clear, Sheriff.

WOODY: Great!

(He jumps off Hanuman’s back.)

WOODY: Right this way!

(Fergus bumps into the closed door.)

WOODY: Oh! Your Majesty, are you okay?

FERGUS: (dizzily shakes his head) Aye, never better, Marston.

(He trips over a garbage can. The next character to leave, Buddy Pine, rolls his eyes.)

SYNDROME: Brilliant- Hey!

(He ducks under Dim carrying Heimlich, Rosie, Tuck, and Roll. Dim flies around the Luxo Jr. statue.)

HEIMLICH: Whee! I feel like a beautiful butterfly!

WOODY: Watch out for the ladder!

(Alfredo Linguini ducks as Andy Davis swings the ladder over his head. Mo Morrison and Darby Steel walk by.)

MORRISON: I’ll say this much, I’m surprised this went off as well as it did.

DARBY: You’re telling me.

(They join the large group of characters being guided by Woody.)

WOODY: Okay, everybody. Get- Get together now.

(Tinny arrives.)

WOODY: Oh! After you.

(Tinny toots happily and bumps into M-O, who chitters angrily. Edna Mode hands Rex the camera.)

E: It is time, darling.

REX: Thank you, Ms. Mode!

Heeseung rushed out of his dorm room, ignoring all the weird looks he was getting as he ran through the campus to get to YNs studio. Living on campus had its perks, and when YN was on campus it made things 10x easier. He quickly entered the building, running up the stairs that took him to the floor of her studio and getting frustrated with himself for not entering the passcode as quickly as he wanted to.

“YN? Sweetheart?” He called out, looking around the room and not seeing anything. 

“Hee?” He heard a faint whisper, soon finding YN on the floor holding herself for comfort.

“I’m here, sweetheart it’s okay,” He said, as he pulled YN into a hug.

“Heeseung, I’m scared,” she sobbed as she held up her palm, he immediately froze as he saw the red on it. “I’m bleeding.”

Her body was trembling, her face was pale and tears were falling down. Heeseung immediately took out his phone and called an ambulance. This is what he was worried about in the first place, last appointment the doctor warned them about her stress levels and any incident could send her over the edge and it could be critical. He was never one to resort to violence, but at this moment all he could think about was punching Jake in the face.

When the ambulance arrived, he managed to calm YN down enough to where she was more relaxed, her exhaustion taking over her and he laid his hand on her small bump. He was not a religious man, but he couldn’t stop himself praying and begging God to protect his baby. The EMTs quickly got to work and he stood up to let them do their job, YN started getting anxious again and he made sure to stay near and hold her hand. They checked some things before they concluded to bring her in, placing her on a gurney right as Yeonjun and Mina walked through the door, both of them out of breath.

“Oh my God,” Mina said, her eyes filling with tears.

“They’re taking her in to check everything, they said the baby has a heartbeat, but they need to be sure,” Heeseung said.

“I’ll let everyone know to meet us at the hospital. Heeseung, we need to tell her parents,” Yeonjun said and Heeseung nodded, understanding.

“Ask YN first, it needs to be okay with her. I’m going to go with them, I’ll see you guys at the hospital.”

The way Heeseung respected and dedicated his time and effort to YN was something very rare for the friend group to witness. They all sat outside the waiting room, Heeseung looking down at the floor, no emotions on his face as he only had his thoughts to himself. Mina came over then, and sat down next to him, handing him a water bottle and he quickly snapped his gaze and took it from her.

“Thanks,” he mumbled. 

“She’s going to be okay, Heeseung. YN is strong, and that baby will be fine,” Mina said, hoping to ease some worry. 

“I know, I know I just…I feel like it’s my fault. If it wasn’t for that-that guy,” Heeseung couldn’t stop the rage as he thought about his so-called friend. His knuckles turned white as he gripped his hands in a fist.

Suddenly, the doors opened and in walked a man in a suit, he resembled YN and Heeseung stood up, knowing exactly who he was.

“Sir,” Yeonjun said.

“How’s my little girl?” The man said, as he greeted her friends. 

“They’re not done doing tests but they should be done soon,” Mina explained.

“And you must be Heeseung?” The man said, holding out his hand for Heeseung to shake. 

“Nice to meet you, Sir,” Heeseung said, shaking the man's hand. “I am sorry this isn’t under better circumstances.”

“Well, I had to find out sometime, didn’t I? How long were you two planning on keeping it from me?” He asked.

“Not long, we were about to tell you guys, and my parents of course,” Heeseung explained.

“Hm, I see. You’re a Medical student?” He asked.

“I will graduate with my Master’s soon in Pharmaceutical Medicine,” Heeseung said, explaining the reality of graduating hitting him. 

“Hm, good field. Makes good money, Kazuha’s father is a friend of mine who also was in the same field,” He said, nodding towards Kazuha.

“My dad owns a bunch of clinics of all sorts now, if you need an internship or anything he can get you in,” Kazuha said, smiling at the two. YNs father nodded.

“I have an internship lined up already, but I do appreciate it, both of you,” Heeseung said.

“The father of my grandchild will never be jobless, just remember that,” Her father explained, patting him on the back.

Suddenly, a doctor walked out of the room and everyone straightened up as she came out to see everyone. 

“Heeseung? YN is looking for you,” The doctor said. “You may go in. She’s fine and her stress levels are down, the baby is fine and healthy.”

Heeseung let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding in, feeling the weight lift off his shoulders as he walked over to the door and opening it. YN laid in the hospital bed, looking as exhausted as she was probably feeling. 

“Sweetheart,” He said, gaining her attention.

“Heeseung,” She said, sitting up more and reaching out for him as he embraced her, giving kisses on top of her head. Her father followed, watching the scene in front of him. “This was so stupid, Heeseung.”

“No, no, what matters is that you and the baby are okay,” He said as he held her face in his hands, studying it to make sure she was okay.

They heard someone clear their throat and YN turned and looked at her father. Her eyes went wide and she suddenly felt small but also a relief her father came.

“Daddy,” she said and Heeseung moved so her father could hug his daughter. He gently held her close, Heeseung could see the small tears well in his eyes as he sighed. 

“YN, why didn’t you tell me sooner?” He asked.

“I was scared,” she mumbled. “Daddy, this is Heeseung, my boyfriend.”

“We’ve met, don’t worry,” Her father chuckled. “Next time tell me these things, I would not be mad. I’m just glad you are okay. And have you two decided where you’ll live when the baby comes?”

“Uhm…W-” YN began to stutter.

“We’re still looking at apartments, we’re going to need a bigger apartment once the little one comes,” Heeseung said, quickly saving YN from any embarrassment as she was already in.

“YN has a trust fund, she doesn’t have access to it until she graduates but I might be able to help with that,” Her father said.

“Daddy, no! I graduate soon and the baby will be here after that,” YN said.

A trust fund? Heeseung knew YN was rich but he wasn’t expecting her to be THAT wealthy. 

“I just want what’s best for you,” He said and she groaned.

“Dad, I’m an adult and I’m working on it, okay? I appreciate it but Heeseung and I are going to be fine, trust me,” She said, giving Heeseung a smile.

“Fine, fine. Yes, I’ll let you two figure it out,” Her father said, stepping back. 

“I’ll give you two some privacy, YN do you want anything?” Heeseung asked, about to walk out. 

“Some more water please,” YN said.

“And you, Sir?” He asked.

“Nothing for me, thank you, Heeseung,” His father gave him a smile and Heeseung turned and walked out. 

Once he closed the door, he saw the chaos. Sakura was being held back by Mina, and Karina and Kazuha were holding Yeonjun back as they were spouting curse words at a certain someone. Heeseung turned and looked at who they were so angry about, finally understanding and the rage building up in his chest. Before he knew it, he held his hands in a fist and quickly pounced on the man before him, punching him in the face and knocking him down. 

“You bastard!” Heeseung jumped on him and punched him again. “You dare show your face here!”

The girls quickly gasped and rushed to Heeseung, pulling him off the boy, security then grabbed them and got Heeseung off of Jake, and some nurses helped Jake up as he held his face.

“No, I’m fine, I’m fine. I deserved it,” Jake said. “I said I’m fine!”

“Let me go! He deserves it! LET ME GO!” Heeseung yelled, frustrated at the security manhandling him and not letting him near Jake.

“Heeseung, go inside and be with YN,” Heeseung turned, calming down suddenly and looking at YN’s father, who was calm and just nodded.

Heeseung was let go by security and Heeseung quickly composed himself, feeling ashamed for losing his cool in front of YN’s father of all people.

“Go inside, I’ll take it from here,” He said, patting his shoulder and Heeseung nodded, going inside the room and looking at YN, who was full of concern.

“Jake showed up. I punched him,” Heeseung said. “That felt good.”

DRAMA REVIEW | Lovely Runner (2024)

Lovely Runner it's undoubtedly one of the best dramas of 2024.

It has all the elements that make a drama a mega hit: comedy, romance, time travel, well written characters (both leads and supporting ones) and an engaging plot line that never bores you. Starring Kim Hye Yoon and Byeon Woo Seok, adapted from the web novel The Best of Tomorrow by screenwriter Lee Shi Eun and directed by Yoon Jong Ho and Kim Tae Yub, the Lovely Runner team achieved a perfect execution in front and behind the camera.

I think the true star of this drama it's the writing and on this I can't commend Lee Si Eun enough. I had already seen her potential in dramas like True Beauty but here she really manages to shine through a well crafted, smart and cohesive story with no loose ends. I'm incredibly impressed by her talent.

The writing was perfectly complemented by the directors's outstanding work in leading a film crew that was on every detail of each part of the story, in each timeline, never missing a beat. Always delivering their A+++ game. But there was also great work done from the directors part in helping the actors get the comedic timing exactly right, the more emotional scenes to deliver and the team work among cast and crew to be flawless.

Lovely Runner might be a big hit now, but it's actually a sleeper hit. The lack of promotion this drama had was embarrassing and if it wasn't for the devoted fans, studio executives would have never realized they had a gem in their hands. So, it's not only a great drama with a super fandom that really fought for this story, it's also becoming yet another prime example in the list of films and tv that achieved all of it by themselves because artists delivered nothing short of excellence.

On this point I can't ignore the incredible performances given by the entire cast. Kim Hye Yoon and Byeon Woo Seok are definitely the standouts, they stole the show, this is their story and the actors chemistry it's electrifying. But the way supportive actors would show up in a scene and push the story forward in a coherent way and even make it better, it's wild to me. The chemistry this cast had it's a rare feat for an ensamble cast and how they managed to transition seamlessly through different phases of their characters's lives and relationships when events, in each timeline, were changing because of the things our leads did they still remain truthful. So, not only the leads are well developed in this drama but also every single character that shows up, no matter how small the role is.

The best example of this it's actor Heo Hyeong-Gyu who has been working for sixteen years, playing very minor characters, finally having a breakthrough in the industry because of his role in this drama. And while his presence was prominent and important to the story, he barely had lines. So his entire performance is mainly based on micro-expressions or physical stunts.

I also fully expect the actors like Song Geon-Hee, Lee Seung-Hyub, Song Ji-Ho or Seo Hye-won to receive a lot of what korean entertainment industry calls "love calls" aka commercials, dramas and films, among other things.

Experiencing watching Lovely Runner alongside the fandom, waiting every week for a new episode, it's a big part of what made this drama so good. Healthy and good loving fun people, clowning, poking fun at our faves and crying at heartbreak. It's been a long time since I have been able to engage in this way with other fans and I am thankful for them, the cast and crew for all these amazing weeks of fun.

Hello. It's me, and this is the Pixar version of Once Upon a Studio called Once Upon a Pixar.

(The film opens with the headquarters at Pixar as the employees leave for the day.)

Pixar Intern: It's so incredible to think that George Lucas started Pixar back in 1979 until it was founded by Steve Jobs in 1986 40 years ago today. To think of all those talented animators and unforgettable characters who have been a part of the studio over the years.

Pete Docter: Yep. (as he and the intern turn around one last time) If the characters could talk to each other.

(Pete Docter and the intern leave as the door closes while the title comes up: "Once Upon a Pixar". The camera zooms into a photo picture of Woody, Jessie and Bullseye running on a record player. Woody glances back as everything seems quiet in the lobby.)

Woody: Psst! Atta. Princess Atta. You there?

(Princess Atta flies into the lobby and over to his picture.)

Woody: Is that it? They all gone?

Princess Atta: Yep, they're all gone.

Woody: Yee-haw! (he, Jessie and Bullseye leap out of the picture) Come on, Jessie, this is it.

Jessie: Let's get everyone. Yodel-ay-hee-hoo!

Joy: (gasps) There's the signal! All right, everyone! (she, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust jump out of their production cell) It's picture time!

Ember Lumen: The 40-year group photo. (she and Wade jump out of their production cell as well) And the sun's going down. Come on, Wade, let's feel the burn!

Wade Ripple: Ooh, a fire pun. (chuckles) Got to like that.

(Suddenly, Arlo and Spot come out of their production cell as Wade gasps and goes against the wall.)

Arlo: (chuckles nervously) Sorry.

Woody: Picture time, gang!

Mei Lee: (chuckles) Okay, here we come!

(Mei Lee, Miriam, Abby, Priya and Tyler jump out of their production cell while they laugh.)

Abby: Wake up, everyone!

(The Oozma Kappa come out of their production cell as Squishy yells while Russell, Carl and Dug walk down the hallway.)

(Woody follows up the stairs as he looks amused when he sees Underminer leading Colette Tatou with his hypnosis watch.)

Woody: Underminer? Underminer! You-- You stop that now, Underminer!

Rosie: Don't worry, Woody. (chuckles) I got this.

(Rosie hits Underminer offscreen unconsciously.)

Woody: Huh. (gasps) Wow.

I had very high expectations for Light Shop and it did not disappoint! It was great! It was written and created by webtoon artist, Kang Full, also the creator of Moving. I love Moving so much! It was an excellent drama and a tough act to follow. It won so many awards including Baeksang and Blue Dragon Daesang. Light Shop was also directed by rookie director Kim Hee Won, who also starred in Moving. It really is a multiverse. Moving nation, go check it out! There are Easter eggs at the last 15 minutes of episode 8. Moving Season 2 here we go!

It started out as horror but as the story unfolds it seemed more of a melodrama exploring human relationships. It's a journey of the human soul: denial, acceptance and finally transition. It's very interesting and unique concept with a refreshing way to tell a story. It definitely piqued my curiosity. Everyone is theorizing who is actually alive, who is dead, where and when and how. The cast boasts an ensemble group of talented actors. The cinematography is gorgeous and the CGI is good. The set design is well-crafted and extremely detailed. Wonyoung's shop is just exquisite! It looked like it came right out of a Studio Ghibli movie.

I don't really have any criticism towards the drama but it would have been nice if some actors got a little more screen time. I think it would have been great to see Ju Ji Hoon and Park Bo Young at least in one frame together. Having said, that the cast gave an outstanding performance in all their scenes. Lee Jung Eun gave one heck of a performance with the limited minutes she had and worthy of an Oscar. Although technically she is an Oscar winner. I understand that the original webtoon is actually just very short. The cast is huge but the drama only has 8 episodes. They definitely made the best out of it. Adding fillers would have probably just made the drama dragging and lose sight of focus. That is why it was crucial that Disney brought Kang Full on board to be part of the drama's creative process and to ensure consistency. Looking forward to their future collaboration(s).

Kudos to the directorial debut of Kim Hee Won. I think he did a fantastic job! He had his hands full for the past few years. Acting in Moving, directing Light Shop, and also acting in the movie Project Silence alongside the late Lee Sun Kyun. Ahjusshi, you are missed. I hope you found the light. 💡

Turtles Catches Up With Old GMMTV: 2gether and Still 2gether Edition

[What’s going on here? After joining Tumblr and discovering Thai BLs through KinnPorsche in 2022, I began watching GMMTV’s new offerings -- and realized that I had a lot of history to catch up on, to appreciate the more recent works that I was delving into. From tropes to BL frameworks, what we’re watching now hails from somewhere, and I’m learning about Thai BL's history through what I’m calling the Old GMMTV Challenge (OGMMTVC). Starting with recommendations from @absolutebl on their post regarding how GMMTV is correcting for its mistakes with its shows today, I’ve made an expansive list to get me through a condensed history of essential/classic/significant Thai BLs produced by GMMTV and many other BL studios. My watchlist, pasted below, lists what I’ve watched and what’s upcoming, along with the reviews I’ve written so far. Today, I tackle the impact of GMMTV’s biggest BL, 2gether, and its companion follow-up, Still 2gether.]

Alright! We have reached a major milestone in the Old GMMTV Challenge. This entire project started off on the backs of two now-seminal posts (for me! and I hope for you, too!). The first one was a dialogue I had with the ever-lovely @miscellar regarding how Bad Buddy had addressed BL tropes and turned those tropes around for a singular drama experience. At the time of my asking @miscellar about this, I hadn’t organized myself to do a chronological exploration of Thai BLs as a genre -- I was picking and choosing what to watch, and I knew that what I had watched in Bad Buddy was formative. I wanted to learn more.

@absolutebl had caught the scent of this discussion, as others were sending them asks of this historical nature as well, and they penned this post that listed out the three dramas that they thought best explained how GMMTV came to its current state of programming -- GMMTV’s apology tour, as we called it back then, with Love Sick, SOTUS, and 2gether listed as the three dramas one needed to watch to understand the state of GMMTV’s BL programming now.

So with that, I dove in, and publicly began building out the OGMMTVC, with major help from @absolutebl, @bengiyo, @shortpplfedup, @lurkingshan, @miscellar, @nieves-de-sugui, @solitaryandwandering, and many, MANY others along the way (@manogirl singlehandedly introduced me to MaxTul, for which I say, FUCK YEAH, FRIEND, THANK YOU!). 

And the milestone that we’re celebrating today is that I’ve crossed the 2gether and Still 2gether threshold -- 2gether being the last drama on @absolutebl‘s original list. And, of course! I have thoughts on 2G and S2G.

(Before I dive in, I just want to say that I’m saving some juicy, juicy analysis of the pain/suffering/separation type for a separate meta that I’m hoping to publish later this week, offering a comparative analysis of Still 2gether to Bad Buddy and Until We Meet Again. I don’t want to unwind this here, because I want this post to focus in large part on 2gether’s media influence, but -- stay tuned, I’m headed for more pain meta shortly, tee hee!)

So, yeah, 2gether -- wow, right? Haha. 

No, not quite, I’m just sort of joking. I’ve had EXCELLENT dialogue with the fabulous @bengiyo and @so-much-yet-to-learn​ about there being some shining spots in 2gether, which I agree with them about. (For both 2G and S2G, @bengiyo​ and @so-much-yet-to-learn​ shared with me some incredibly moving reflections on what it meant that Bright Vachirawit, in particular, was so emphatic about Sarawat being identified as gay in the show -- and how that spoke to the queer community during 2G’s prime. Thanks to you both for those timely comments.)

I think those of us who watched this 2G installment of the franchise know inherently what its major issues are, including a lack of chemistry emanating from Win Metawin, and an overabundance of pure talent and eagerness from Bright Vachirawit that wasn’t met at his level, à la Krist and Singto in SOTUS.

Besides the 2gether series itself -- which I’ll get back to in a minute -- I just want to note the external landscape of the show’s airing. We now all know that this show premiered in the very early stages of the COVID pandemic emanating out of Asia. 2gether’s popularity has long been attributed to people being at home to watch shows, many of whom likely were watching Thai BLs for the very first time. According to 2gether’s wiki, the show reached 100 million views by April 2020 on LINE TV ALONE (thank you to @lurkingshan​ for dropping the data!). Both Bright and Win have MASSIVE social media followings now, FAR outnumbering the other stableholders at GMMTV (Tay, Off, Gun, Nanon, etc.). And, 2gether’s continued success in and out of Asia is mostly attributed to the nostalgia that first-time viewers may have about 2gether being their first BL. 

I thought this was all interesting to note in a recent Instagram post that Toptap Jirakit, who plays Type in 2gether/Still 2gether, posted. He hit the streets, interviewing Thai fans on their favorite BL series. I think it’s likely convenient for his own career that most of the interviewees listed 2G in their top three lists -- but it made me think. 

I know, especially from discussions with @bengiyo and @lurkingshan, that there was a LOT of BL fan dismay about the ending of 2G. To be UTTERLY honest, I TOTALLY MISSED the ending high-five, because I was looking for, like, something BIG at the end, and, lol, the high-five totally went over my head. I guess that’s a good description for my feeling of the entire series, which I’ll dive more into in a bit.

First, I want to offer another, but supporting, theory on 2G’s popularity. Taking into account that Toptap IG video (again, acknowledging the self-promotion within it), as well as Bright and Win’s massive popularity, I want to meditate on the wider fandom of BLs vs. non-BL dramas in Asia. BLs in Japan, for instance, are often relegated to midnight-or-later airing times on television. And much of GMMTV’s content is online-based first. I don’t know, as BL fans, if we’re routinely and globally aware that the fandom for BLs -- which is big, maybe even huge -- is dwarfed by, say, the fandom of a mid-sized K-drama. The BL industries in Thailand and Korea are still relatively young and nascent, while other non-BL drama machines are well-oiled across the continent.

In other words -- yes, because of COVID did 2G find a much bigger audience. But I also want to offer that 2G’s...chastity? chasteness?...may have also HELPED this particular series gain such wider appeal. In other words: Asian audiences of a larger mass, outside of established BL fandoms within and outside of Thailand, may have responded more favorably to 2G BECAUSE of 2G’s lack of sex, a lack of innuendo, a lack of insinuation. 

(Remember: in majority cishet society, sex is judged. And queer sex? Forget about it. I’ve established in this OGMMTVC that queer sex is even fodder for creating discriminatory material WITHIN the BL genre itself. Sex AND queer attraction give many people the jibbles. Audiences going to non-BL dramas may be doing so because they want to consume specifically het content. Same-sex romance just might not be their thing. And those non-BL drama genres are GIGANTIC -- from funding to viewership, etc.)

In that Toptap video, many fans list Bad Buddy, A Tale of Thousand Stars, and others as their other favorite BLs. Putting BBS aside for a second -- because there WAS intimacy in BBS, just not an overabundance of it -- we can consider ATOTS as another example of a BL that happens to be quite popular in Thailand, demonstratively, while also being subject to similar criticism by BL fandom as 2G in having a lack of intimacy. 

While us in the BL fandom will readily make fun of 2G for not having intimacy at all, I do think, for Asian audiences not accustomed to an abundance of sex and/or same-sex sex in media -- the way that us Western viewers have in our majority media -- that 2G was accessible. It wouldn’t have to make your non-BL fan, new to the genre, uncomfortable -- especially to see same-sex intimacy. 

(The wonderful @telomeke​ made a similar point last week in a conversation about queer acceptance vis à vis Thai politics. I wonder if our devoted BL fandoms lull us to think that an ENTIRE COUNTRY might be accepting of the queer community and queer politics and policies. It’s definitely not a reality in any single nation worldwide. There are always going to be complicated dichotomies of acceptance in every single society that humans exist in.)

When I got to the end of 2G, and saw that there wasn’t going to be any kissin’ or huggin’ -- it made TOTAL sense to me WHY this show was popular OUTSIDE of the already-established BL fandom, particularly in Asia. It ain’t my cup of tea, but it was a show that I could see, like, my Asian cousins watching, as an introduction to queer revelations and engagement. And then, if they stuck with the genre, I could see them going to, say, an ATOTS, before going to a BBS, a show that really addressed the development of queer intimacy between men. Numbers-wise -- yes, COVID explains 2G’s popularity. Content-wise? Content-wise, 2G stays in people’s hearts, partly because I believe it didn’t PUSH those hearts, as a same-sex starting gun to their first exposure to BL. 

I could get well into an analysis of how sex, generally, is perceived in Asia, and ALL of the cultural nuances and biases AGAINST sex in Asia (cc @neuroticbookworm​, as we have talked about potentially writing meta together on this topic from our shared South Asian lens). But I happen to think that some of our beloved BL filmmakers -- P’Aof Noppharnach, Jojo Tichakorn, New Siwaj, Cheewin Thanamin -- have actually addressed it, and beautifully so, and continue to do so. For instance, the ending quote placards in Dark Blue Kiss touch multiple times on Thailand needing more sex education. Just to offer a personal example -- I’ve had to talk to Asian relatives well into their thirties, as an American, about their first exposure to sex, to explain that sex is not... a bad thing. It’s the cultural and social judgments that accompany sex that colors a person’s worldview on sex. 

2G didn’t challenge ANY OF THAT. In fact, in casting Win, they chose a dude who was VERY CLEARLY not INTO that -- to me, à la the casting of Krist Perawat in SOTUS.

No sex? No moral challenges, no ethical quandaries, no uncomfortable moments with a same-sex acting partner. Just two dudes dating, cute cute, holding hands at the Scrubb concert (or whatever). 

Of course, for my tastes, as y’all know, I desire something more complicated. And I understand that GMMTV HEARD the feedback that many established BL fans had about that 2G ending. And P’Aof Noppharnach, at the time of 2G’s ending, clearly said something to the effect of, not on my watch, I’m actually going to take this franchise AND FIX IT, MY WAY, which, fuck, COULD I LOVE THIS MAN MORE? No -- but YES, I found a way to love him more.

And we got Still 2gether -- a show rooted in its QUEERNESS. QUEERNESS AND INTIMACY AND INDICATIONS OF SEX. I mean, look!

Not just rainbow shirts! Rainbow shirts on multiple people. And rainbow TABLES. P’Aof was like, WE ARE NOT MISSING A MOMENT HERE, PEOPLE. We’re going to fix this. We’re going to claim BL for the queer community who actually serve at the mercy of the audience that consumes BLs.

Before I dig further into S2G, for which I have reams of notes, as opposed to 2G (obviously) -- some quick positive notes on 2G. Wat’s romantic confession in the shelter bus in the forest was seriously heart-warming. It was romantic as fuck. And we see a NUMBER of tropes that make their way into BBS -- bringing over a beverage to someone who is joined by another potential romantic partner; how everything needs to be a competition or a “deal”; all the singing and writing of songs; make-up remover/micellar water (hi @miscellar​, ha!); the keeping of a guitar for someone else. I loved seeing those tropes in 2G. I love when shows talk to each other.

Most of all, 2G established Sarawat as committed to his pursuit. Bright was UNABASHED in his role as Sarawat. It was Win/Tine who could not meet Bright’s level -- seemingly out of, what, disinterest? Repulsion? Maybe even a lack of acting talent? It wasn’t obnoxious, per se. It just seemed like Win didn’t know HOW to respond, or even what to respond TO -- all while Bright/Wat CLEARLY SIMMERED in his role. (Like I said earlier, @bengiyo​ has shared that Bright was emphatic in interviews that Sarawat was gay, while Win was less forward about Tine and who Tine was.)

And I think S2G absolutely grabbed Bright’s talent and spotlighted it. I am deeply glad that the ending of S2G had a such a STRONG sexual insinuation, à la AePete’s SIMMERING attraction in Love By Chance, and even in moments throughout the show as well, and I loved how S2G leveraged Bright’s fabulous acting as Sarawat IN those insinuations. Because -- contrary to how my Asian parents raised me, and how many Asians are TAUGHT to THINK about sex, which is to say, to try to ignore it or laugh at it -- PEOPLE HAVE SEX. And sex, and QUEER SEX, are things to be celebrated. Sex is beautiful, and BELONGS in stories of romance and love. To have had it essentially...deleted?...from 2G removed a huge sense of reality from that piece of drama art.

S2G also focused on a thing that many in the BL fandom actually pooh-pooh: it focused on a committed, ongoing relationship. My favorite BL in the world, Kinou Nani Tabeta?/What Did You Eat Yesterday? is focused on two middle-aged guys in the middle of their years-long relationship. I’m a married mom. I want to see the struggle. I love first love in BLs, don’t get me wrong -- my Cherry Magics, my BBSs, my Old Fashion Cupcakes. But I also don’t mind the struggles. Give me a Minato’s Laundromat, season 2, any day.

I think P’Aof was offering a subversion to Thai BL expectations by showing Tine and Wat in their settled relationship, a year in, where even Sarawat admits -- the sweetness of the relationship has worn off. The guys are working together, living together, working on their relationship together, eating instant noodles together, instead of the green curry and simmered pork and eggs that Tine lovingly made for Sarawat in their early days.

I feel like I’ve said this before, but let me say it again: I CANNOT EMPHASIZE HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR MEDIA TO SHOW QUEER COUPLES IN LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS. Queer partners are FAMILY, TOO. I had ongoing FABULOUS conversation with @chickenstrangers​​ (THANK YOU, FRIEND!) during my 2G and S2G conversations, and dear @chickenstrangers​​ pointed out to me the nature of a conversation that Sarawat and Earn (FILM FILM FILM!) had, in which Earn complemented Sarawat on his courage in being in a same-sex relationship. And Wat corrects her. (Sorry for the massively bad screenshots, it’s bumbling mom hour around here):

Like I said earlier: 2G gave potentially sex-and-queer-love-averse audiences a BL they could chew on. Win Metawin gave them enough by way of the portrayal to allow audiences to feel like they could be at arm’s-length while observing a same-sex relationship.

S2G, and Sarawat himself, strike to the HEART of queer existence and queer love. Sarawat corrects Earn: I do not love Tine because I’m courageous. I love Tine because I love Tine, because I am a human who loves another human. It’s nothing special. It’s just love that myself and my partner have, that other couples have. 

I think what P’Aof did, by way of observing what was going down in 2G -- what was being NORMALIZED in 2G -- was to pull a switch and turn the tracks around, and say, I have got to normalize ANOTHER PATH for these fans that are paying extremely close attention to Bright and Win right now. And he did it, with rainbow tablecloths and shirts; with Tine’s homies, Fong and Ohm, holding Tine down; with Sarawat’s homies, Man and Boss, exploring their OWN loves simultaneously with Sarawat and holding Sarawat down with love and support. 

Oh, and, of course. What P’Aof did with Green. Green was arguably a worst-case scenario of a gay character being misused for comedy in any of the dramas I’ve seen on the OGMMTVC in 2G. I honestly do NOT know what GMMTV was thinking when they allowed that characterization to air.

And Green just becomes... SASSY, and EQUAL, and really fun and slightly conniving towards Dim in S2G, and it was FABULOUS to watch (OMG. Guy and Guy’s chemistry and comedy? HILARIOUS. P’Aof ABSOLUTELY knew what he was doing there!).

Watching S2G was another fabulous P’Aof moment. It was like putting on warm pajamas and snuggling in for the smart ride of a drama. Every bad drama should consider having P’Aof come in to save the day (except for The Promise and Step By Step -- let’s never utter those titles ever again, ever). 

But, I do need to give 2G credit. 2G opened the door for something: it served as a misstep for GMMTV to learn from. I don’t want to be SO summarizing like that -- again, because very important experts in @bengiyo​ and @so-much-yet-to-learn​, who analyze shows from a very important queer lens, have spoken on the bright spots of 2G. 2G allowed for S2G to exist, for Sarawat to exist as an openly-in-love man with a boyfriend who he doted on. 2G allowed for fans of 2G to then walk the road in S2G, to be exposed to P’Aof’s CRITICAL and EMPATHIC eye in developing queer content, and to be exposed to a Sarawat that was much more able to LOVE and to receive love. 

I’ll giggle and laugh at the foibles of 2G. But I saw how Bright, and even Win, improved in S2G. I saw how a director in P’Aof, and his screenwriting team in Pratchaya, Bee, and Au, took a thing that wasn’t representing the queer community healthily enough, and turned it into yet another gorgeous representation, not just of queer love -- but of GLOBAL LOVE, a kind of love, between Tine and Sarawat, that all of us humans who WANT to love another person, can strive for. I will always appreciate 2G and S2G for that journey.

[Alright, we keep truckin’! If you’ve been following my blog in the late-night space, well -- you know where I’m at, psychologically, at the moment. I was ALL KINDS OF MESSSEDDDDD UPPPPPPPPPP over I Told Sunset About You. GEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZ. I am really going to enjoy my ITSAY write-up, and will definitely serve up some comparative analysis between ITSAY and other shows, as per a request from the legendary @lurkingshan, I gotchu, gurl. I see some really important moments from the OGMMTVC journey in ITSAY and cannot wait to get my pen on them.

And speaking of wild and crazy mindsets, I have started YYY -- more on THAT in the liveblogs -- and then after YYY, a return to dear MaxTul. We’ll definitely honor the end of Tul Pakorn’s career as I watch Manner of Death for the first time. Tul’s been a real homey in the space for a while, and I can’t wait to celebrate him.
