I hope everyone whose been running their mouth about rebuilding diasporic Jewish culture and evil Zionist Hebrew destroying Yiddish, ladino, and judeo-Arabic knows that even the most mild limitations on contact with Israeli academia/study abroad programs/flow information would be a disaster for an already struggling field with extreme financial constraints and a very very limited time frame to record native speakers (who for every diasporic language apart from Yiddish almost entirely live in Israel or have language institutions based in the state of Israel), develop curricula, and stabilize/retransmit the language

vaguely fascinated by osana sov's naming choices. she chose for her daughter a name that can mean "bitter (strength)" or "lady" in two ancient languages (hebrew and aramaic) and for her son a name that means "old friend" in another ancient language (old english)
like every other golden age character has a name that's pretty normal by our standards, which tbh includes mara, then osana just names her other kid uldwyn. then again, even osana's name is either a variant of the hebrew hosanna or after an obscure and possibly fictitious old english princess-saint whose name means something along the lines of "godly solitude", so i suppose mara might be considered the odd one out
#destiny 2#osana sov#ngl i lean towards the old english meaning for osana bc it's very fitting given she lives in the wilderness w uldren in the distributary#also want to acknowledge osana's name could be japanese (“childhood friend”) but given her kids have names from hebrew and old english#it seems pretty likely that her name has one or both of the same origins#either way osana was def a history nerd btwn this and her mentioning weregilds unprompted in the marasenna#though it's very interesting to me that most of what we *see* of osana in her in the context of her motherhood#even though she's also an extremely renowned negotiator and mara mentions osana also had premonitions (presumably of the collapse)#...there's a vague irony that osana and mara (and crow) had truthful visions but uldren's were purely a deceit by riven#also i have feelings abt the fact that mara and osana were the only ones to remain w their names unchanged amongst the original awoken#(to our knowledge at least) since mara whose namesake comes from the book of ruth where naomi changed her name to that out of grief#and mara changed basically every other person aboard that ship consciously or otherwise#but did she change her mother/let the transformation change her? idk it's been a lingering thought in my brain since forsaken#anyway this is inspired by me trying to figure out what the revenants' watchtower is guarding#i don't think it's the pre-existing one to the dreaming city bc the scorn are already there#notably all the lore calls it *the* watchtower but the livestream mentioned *a* watchtower so i think it must be a different one#my spinfoil hope is that it's guarding the entrance to the distributary but also interamnia (awoken capital) would be cool#edit: should prob mention i'm assuming uld- equals ald- (old) but like. fairly simple assumption given everything

I love the people running the Hebrew class because I was telling them about the conversion class that's starting this Thursday and our Hebrew class is that day at that time and they were talking about moving the class time and that I'm their best and most consistent student and maybe they're flattering me but

Lord of the Flies, Gluttonous Queen, Prince of Filth, Prince of Decay, Goddess of Ekron, Lord of Slander, Queen of Pestilence and Famine, The Rotting One
I Solomon said unto him: “Beelzeboul what is thy employment?” And (s)he answered me: “I destroy kings. I ally myself with foreign tyrants. And my own demons I set on to men, in order that the latter may believe in them and be lost. And the chosen servants of God, priests, and faithful men, I excite unto desires for wicked sins, and evil heresies, and lawless deeds; and they obey me, and I bear them on to destruction. And I inspire men with envy, and desire for murder, and for wars, and sodomy, and other evil things. And I will destroy the world.” - The Testament of Solomon
#oc: bael roach/beelzebub#dw i got you her first name is pronounced like belle#it's spelled bael to be close to the hebrew name of ba'al zebuv#she's so special to me i love writing characters like her#she's a bit narcissistic and has her own brand of a chaotic tantrum throwing temper but she can be REAL creepy sometimes#she's also a big party girl who's always overdressed for the occassion#and since beelzebub is the sin of gluttony she's constantly eating drinking and smoking in my mind#the funniest thing about me that even tho i have entomophobia i like insect imagery and symbolism with my characters#and well she's literally beelzebub she can basically control any kind of bugs and stuff#i also like the living hive concept a lot so yeah.... there're bugs living inside of her body#i mostly picture her with cockroaches flies skull moths and mantises crawling around her shoulder and face a lot#she's like gru with the minions she can tell all of them apart and remembers everything about them#she's not part of any fandom but i ship her a lot with woland their dynamic would be crazy#two chaotic iteration of the devil stirring the pot but since woland is more composed and calculated he'd balance her over the top#and dramatic mess of a personality out quite well#they'd crash each others parties and stuff and have a heated banter but actually wouldn't lay a finger on each other#in fact if you remotely try to insult or dare i say hurt one of them the other would go and whoop your ass bc they're offended#also fun fact i love the idea that the rest of the seven deadly sins were once high ranking angels who betrayed heaven for lucifer#so it'll go the same for my girlie too#i headcannon that she still has her wings but they turned into a more insectoid kinda thing#my moodboards :3

On this episode of: “Oh, So that’s how screwed we are!”
“Satanic” Edge-Lord: I wonder what the original [Matthew 7:12], Yiddish scripture meant. This is all translated so wrongly.
Me: It's Leviticus 19 and it was written in HEBREW. Yiddish ([a] "bridge" language of German and Hebrew) was created centuries after the expulsion of Ashkenazi Jews from Judea.
“Satanic” Edge-Lord: I thought Yiddish came before Hebrew? Interesting.
Me: [Externally patient] No…
Also me:

holy shit ao3 updates come in hebrew now. but. since hebrew has gendered second person (like. male/female "you", with the male usually considered the default unless talking to a group of entirely or at least almost entirely ppl who use like. female form of speech for themselves). the translation team made a conscious effort to write everything in aforementioned female "you" and this is lowkey jarring to see ngl

current method to dip a bit back into modern Hebrew is nothing but filling a cheap drugstore notebook with Hebrew hip hop that I write the lyrics out of stanza by stanza while I listen - no translation, just trying to match the sound of the speech to words and follow along

You know, I anticipated learning hebrew in my hebrew class, but what I wasn't anticipating was the rabbi sitting on a book until we responded

my favourite thing to lie about is sometimes i will just tell people i’m bilingual. like if you aren’t fluent but know a language that isn’t very commonly spoken, there’s a 90% chance that you will be the only person in the room with working knowledge of that language. make a grammar mistake? who’s gonna correct you? this never fails to work and makes me laugh every time

Language learning January update:
Current priorities -
1) Mandarin (basic fluency, HSK 5)
2) ASL (work through Lingvano app)
3) Toki Pona (learn all 137 words)
4) Hebrew / Arabic (relearn/learn alphabet)
5) Gaelic (start learning again, if I have time)
6) French (work through Duolingo I guess)
Mandarin -
Previous info: Been slowly learning for the last few years (uhh I think it's been like 5 years or so). I know probably around 3000 characters, but I still feel like I don't even have basic fluency somehow.
Goal: Basic fluency by the end of the year, confidence with all HSK 4 and HSK 5 words and grammar structures. Even though my current reading level is closer to the 拼音 books I have, I want to slowly work through the novel I have.
Progress: Trying to read a few pages of a 拼音 book every day, and so far with the novel I'm about 5 sentences in, with 20 new words added to my vocabulary list.
ASL (sign language) -
Previous info: started learning around October last year, working through the Lingvano app. Had a pretty good streak going for awhile but broke the streak and lost motivation sometime in December. Trying to get back into it. I probably know around 300 signs.
Goal: Work through the Lingvano app by the end of the year.
Toki Pona -
Previous info: I know 10 words...
Goals: Learn all the 137 words by the end of the year.
Greek, Gaelic, Latin, French -
Previous info: Greek - tried learning a few years ago, maybe learned about 30 words. Gaelic - started learning 2 years ago, maybe had about 50 words or so. Latin - didn't get far at all, maybe a few words. French - learned it in school up till grade 12, but I've forgotten so much; don't really have the motivation to get back into it, but I really should.
Goals: I guess these are all on hold for now, unless I get my life more organized. Greek probably won't become a priority again for awhile, Latin certainly won't be a priority for a long while unfortunately, but I hope I can get into Gaelic again later in the year if I find some time. French is definitely something I should get back into, ASAP, but the motivation is just not there for it.
Hebrew -
Previous info: I'm a scholar and a weirdo so I wanna work through the original version of the bible and all its biblical hebrew. Learning the language seems "easier" than struggling with just looking the whole thing up word by word. I didn’t get very far, I guess I sort of know the alphabet and probably around 5 words.
Goal: uhhh idk, do better.
Arabic (Egyptian dialect) -
Previous info: just started learning, still trying to work on recognizing the alphabet.
Goal: I want to be able to learn the alphabet and pronunciation by the end of the year. Duolingo can't really help so it's gonna be an uphill battle for this.
Misc -
I guess my other priorities down the line would be Sanskrit and Italian. Sanskrit cause why not, and Italian cause I want to read through the original Dante's Inferno
