Moth Colony’s Backstory

Moths had their own colony, and were sworn enemies with butterflies. butterflies worshiped the sun, and moths worshiped the moon.

Moths were famous for making the most beautiful clothing and accessories, anything with silk. They were one of the richer colonies for this reason. (Silk comes out of moth’s stomach scales and wrists, easier to use while sewing.)

They had an infamous reputation for their love of books and history, along with their clothes making. For these reasons, the leaders of Moth Colonies were Divine Astro’s (Divine Astrologist) and Supreme Seamstresses. Divine Astros were always male and Supreme Seamstresses were always female.

Being crowned a Divine Astro or a Supreme Seamstress doesn’t mean king and queen. Both the Astro and the Seamstress do not have to be wed or in a relationship to rule together.

Moths worked with the lambs the most, combining wool and silk to make lush and higher quality clothing to sell and wear. And the moths helped try to evacuate the lambs when the mass murder was occurring, and sadly, that’s how Mothi’s mother, a Supreme Seamstress, lost her life. With no father to account for, Mothi was now orphaned.

Mothi’s Backstory

At a young age (4 years normally, 12 in moth years (since moths have a shorter lifespan when ordinary and not a Supreme Seamstress or a Divine Astro. Kinda like how a queen bee lives longer than regular bees)), Mothi was crowned a Supreme Seamstress. Too young to make eggs to expand the colony, a Supreme Seamstress from another colony made a deal to supply eggs for both colonys until Mothi reached a mature age to safely make eggs of her own.

Sadly, 3 years later, both colonies were hit with a surprise attack from a large Butterfly Colony. This killed thousands in both Moth Colonies, killing both the Divine Astros from the 2 Colonies and the Supreme Seamstress that helped provide to both Moth Colonies. Mothi fled with her life.

Because Mothi was crowned a Supreme Seamstress, had a slower growth rate. For the next 35 years, she lived on her own. Unable to find another Moth Colony to join. She was now 14.

She had found a beautiful gold necklace once during her journey, dropped by a pony who was traveling back to an odd looking colony that had many different species. Stealing it, Mothi ran off with it around her neck, unaware that she had now stopped aging from the necklace.

Thousands upon thousands of years pass.

At one point, the necklace was stolen from her from a very rude starfish. But Mothi couldn’t catch them again. So she got older without the necklace, her growth rate still slowed from her being crowned Supreme Seamstress all those millennia ago.

At one point, another hundred and five years later, at the age of 17, gets caught by cultists who store her in a house, planning to kill her for an old bishop named Kallimar. She remembers that name from the history books she used to read during the day, when everyone else was asleep, because of their nocturnal nature.

Building collapsing, broken ribs, fainting. Gentle words and fluffy wool. Mothi hadn’t remembered the last time she had felt wool, but it felt magnificent.

And a familiar face. A black cat with three eyes. The moths were fond of Death long ago. And Mothi could never forget that face.

Mothi eventually becomes a seamstress for The Lamb, finally finding a ‘colony’. The Lamb does have to do many quests for Mothi to find how to make a medicine to help Mothi’s abundant silk production. The silk can be used for clothes, but because she was technically still a Supreme Seamstress, the amount that Mothi made was too much.

In the years between the ages 17 to 18–about 17.5 years for Mothi’s slow Supreme Seamstress growth—there is a period where young Supreme Seamstresses’s and Grand Librarian’s hormones go wild, and make too much silk for their body to handle. Kinda like a menstrual cycle? But it’s for silk.

As I mentioned in this post, I'm playing with Anagrams to cheer myself up a bit at the moment.

As we know, Mimble Sparklepudding is an anagram of "Be Mild, Glum Kidnappers". But also "Skippering Muddle Lamb" and, rather bizarrely "Me Pal Sprinkled Big Mud".

Humble Soapstone is an anagram of "Pothole Sunbeams", which is very poetic I think. And the rather marvellous "Blasphemous Tone" (which is exactly what he adopted at points during his time in Ishgard). And possibly best of all, "No Hemp Absolutes", which is quite accurate for his Island Sanctuary!

Amon of Syrcus (@spotofmummery) is an anagram of "Masonry Focus", which I daresay he certainly had after accidentally causing a massive earthquake. Also "No Mousy Scarf", which given his penchant for outrageous fashions is probably accurate.

Hu plig is the ritual for calling or summoing the tus plig (the soul or self), which is often performed for a sick person, and always for a newly born child. It is of course the shaman's business to travel to the otherworld to bargain with the spirits who may have trapped such a tus plig, but in less serious cases a hu plig ritual is often resorted to, in cases of sickness or mental distress.

At birth a child does not possess this tus plig, and if the child survives for three days after birth, a hu plig ritual must be conducted to summon the self into its body. After this a prohibition is placed on the house for a period of one lunar month (30 days). Th ritual may be performed by anybody who knows the appropriate words and formulae, but in practice it is usually a man of some standing who is asked, who may also be a shaman, although he does not have to be. This is like a christening, since it is at this time that child's first name is given by the caller of the soul; he will receive an 'elder' or mature, name, after the birth of one or more children, and these names, like clan names, can be changed to avert continued sickness or misfortune.

The ritual to call the tus plig is performed just inside the house, on the front porch. Four sprigs of maple are planted in the ground at the four corners of the porch, bound together by a string of hemp. Holding a chicken and burning paper made from bamboo which symbolizes money in the otherworld (for as heavenly money is earthly paper, so tears on earth are laughter in the otherworld, and cattle here are people there), and burning incense before a saucer of rice with an egg on a stool, the person who is calling the soul of the child stands facing the valley and sings a very sweet and beautiful song to invite the wandering tus plig into the body of the new-born child. Hu plig is often performed at the actual site, usually otuside the house, where it is diagnosed that the tus plig of a patient has 'fallen', in which case the soul-caller will go to that site with a chicken and incense, spirit-money to burn, and a bottle of rice-wine, and squatting by the site will quietly summon the tus plig to return to its abode. He will take back with him an insect from the site which symbolises the returning tus plig. On other occasions the ritual is performed a the open door, where a chicken is released to search for the insect before it itself is sacrificed, A special hu plig ritual is performed by each household at the new year, when the selves not only of the inhabitants of the house but also of the domestic animals and crops (plig woob plig loo) are summoned back to remain within the household compound, and the all the farming tools and domestic utensils are ritually blessed.

Clelia was born in the town of Le Budrie, in the Diocese of Bologna, on February 13, 1847, of very religious parents, Giuseppe Barbieri and Giacinta Nanetti. Her fellow villagers and neighbours eked out a meager living by the work of their hands, but, because of the lack of resources, were often ill. When Clelia was eight her father died of cholera.

The young girl learned from her mother not only how to sew and weave wool, but, more importantly, how to love God and live a religious life. She often asked her mother: 'Tell me about God,' or 'What can I do to become holy?'

She regularly went to church, and spent time at prayer.

She earnestly applied herself to the study of the catechism. By nature she was gentle and sweet, and remarkably innocent. When she wove hemp for marketing, she used to say to her mother who was urging her on to greater speed: 'Mother, we're being paid for this work, so we have to do it as well as we can.'

As a result, on May 1, 1864, the four young girls, trusting in God alone, moved into a small house, locally known as 'The Master's House.' There they established a quiet place withdrawn from the world, called 'The Retreat of Le Budrie', which is rightly considered the cradle of the Congregation of the Minims of the Sorrowful Virgin.

At first the primary concern of the members was to care for girls deserted or neglected by their parents, and train them in good living and domestic work. A little later, during a retreat, Clelia wrote a rule of common life, which stressed prayer, sacrifice, work and love.

The group of sisters chose as their patrons the Sorrowful Virgin Mary, whose devotion the Friar Servants of Mary had fostered in the Diocese of Bologna, and Saint Francis of Paola, the most humble of the servants of God whose help they sought in the necessities of life. Gaetano Guidi, the pastor, appointed Clelia superior of the group, for God had enriched her with heavenly gifts.

This is shown by the only handwritten letter of hers which we have, a letter entitled 'Jesus, my beloved Spouse'.

Meanwhile, while Clelia progressed rapidly through the stages of sanctity, the first stages of tuberculosis appeared in her fragile body. For seven months she was confined to bed.

Finally, on July 13, 1870, after saying: "Be of good cheer! I'm going to Paradise, but I'll always be with you, and never desert you!"

She went to the Lord. She was 23 when she reunited with Christ in heaven.

On the first anniversary of her death, as if in fulfilment of her promise, while her companions were gathered in prayer in what had been her bedroom, a voice-which all present thought to be that of Clelia-was heard responding to the prayers of the sisters.

From this modest beginning, the Congregation of the Minims of the Sorrowful Virgin grew.

Clelia was beatified by Pope Paul VI on October 27, 1968. Her body is venerated in the chapel of the Congregation's motherhouse at Le Budrie. She is canonized a saint by St. John Paul II on April 9, 1989.
