Heart FM
Tumblr media
"Cape Town's beat"
Going for a twofer in South Africa today is Heart FM, another independent commercial radio station that forms what I would argue is our first modern hits-based example (at last!). Beginning life in 1997 as P4 radio, Heart FM's rebranding in 2006, according to the history tab on its website, saw it adopting a more "commercial mix" in order to cater to a more "diverse audience". This has resulted in its current state as an adult contemporary music radio station which broadcasts to Cape Town and additionally covers large swathes of the South African Western Cape Province including the Drakenstein, West Coast, Swartland, Overberg and Overstrand regions. According to their website on the Advertising page, Heart FM's target audience appears to be peoples living within Cape Town and beyond in the age bracket of 25-49 years of age.
Tumblr media
In terms of popularity, the same website lists about 797,000 listeners, 627,000 of which are in Cape Town alone. The station also claims an exclusive listenership figure of about 408,000- that's as many people who listen to Heart FM and Heart FM alone. Tying together its seeming popularity is its staggering 297k followers on Facebook, beating out every other radio station to so far feature on this blog- so it probably goes without saying, but Cape Town's Heart FM is very much popular and successful.
Tumblr media
How does this popularity actually translate into the running of the station itself, however? Well, naturally, I listened to them in order to find out for myself:
Between 17:00-18:00PM SAST (South African Standard Time), I listened to the "Drive 326 with Suga" live show. Immediately the most unique thing about this particular show when compared to the other station's reviewed thus far on this blog is that "Drive 326 with Suga" featured no less than three presenters, which affected the link construction in a very interesting way. For starters, there are very few links in the show itself, spaced far across several songs, three at least, but when there are links placed inbetween, as opposed to being two minutes or less as has been standard so far, Heart FM's links are no less than three-to-four minutes each. This is obviously to account for the number of presenters so that they all may have something to say, and for the most part, these links carry a very chill, calm conversational vibe to them, usually involving a game of sorts (one of the ones I caught was a word-guessing game) or topical subjects like this year's New Years' resolutions, as well as promotions for local events. There may also be snippets of local news for Cape Town, and every quarter hour without fail there's a traffic and travel update- which, Cape Town being one of South Africa's larger cities, makes a good amount of sense.
Heart FM claims to be Cape Town's no.1 radio station, and with so many exclusive listeners living in the city, keeping them regularly updated on city traffic seems a smart move. Finally, there's a five-minute-long sports segment around the half hour mark. Altogether, the links for Heart FM are constructed in a way that has them feel very engaging due to the casual and entertaining tone. It helps that these links also help the station feel like it belongs in Cape Town with the regular local news and traffic updates it provides.
Tumblr media
So what of the actual music? The station does indeed play a majority of contemporary tracks, but mixes things up with older tracks as well, with tracks like Chris Brown's Summer Too Hot (2023) being played alongside the likes of Eve and Alicia Keys' Gangsta Lovin' (2002) on the regular. While this means Hot FM doesn't play exclusively contemporary music, it does address the diversity aspect of their mission statement and the upper limit of their target audience- these tracks clearly exist to satisfy the older amongst Heart FM's target demographic.
(So, even with our first actual contemporary radio station reviewed on this blog, the music selection isn't exclusively modern trend-setters!)
With its focus on a modern-classical mix of music that caters to nearly all ages, regular local news and traffic reports and entertaining inter-song chats, debates and conversations, it's easy to see why Heart FM is as popular and beloved as it is, especially given its loyal listener base. It's relatable and accessible, and feels like it's a core part of the city of Cape Town- indeed, its very beating Heart.

Feels like the beef is over. Possible Kendrick album drop on the horizon. He even went and lifted copyright claims over any video that uses his four diss tracks since him and his team knew the fire they started over the weekend and that this would go a long way in helping out reactors, edit channels, dissection channels and more.
With the (likely) end of this feud, investigations need to begin. If Kendrick has proper receipts over his allegations, it needs to see the light of day and I hope it's soon. Rap disses is one thing—these are predator accusations that need to be met with the proper gravity. Given his relations with Baka and the stories in Toronto cropping up of his activities, I feel at the very least confident that there will be things Drake needs to address. And address them soon.
But I also want to discuss the (possible) last diss. The Heart Part 6.
A pathetic attempt to steal a title from Kendrick's own series of singles "The Heart Parts I-V". Songs that Kendrick has utilized to give introspection regarding the industry, his masculinity, depression, his savior complex and so much more. And Drake uses that title for what exactly?
Not a brutal response. Not a catchy summer bop.
He sounds defeated. His lyrics are incoherent, going from saying he planted that false information, to also saying that those who planted it are clowns and fakes. He dismisses and ridicules Kendrick's "Mother, I Sober" song, a story about Kendrick being harassed and SA. Except, as I have since corrected myself over thanks to others on here, that the entire song is him saying the assault never happened and no one believes him. So not only did Drake contradict his claims in one song, he showed his illiteracy.
And Kendrick doesn't respond like he does with Family Matters. When Drake dropped FM, Kendrick immediately invalidated an entire seven minute track by dropping his own response, a haunting meet the grahams, within thirty minutes. A malicious dissection and mock therapy session between him and every member of the Grahams, including Drake's alleged hidden daughter. And finishes the blow by dropping Not Like Us in less than a day, a certified summer hit that has already been played over and over again across the world. When Drake stans accused him of making boring, sleep-causing disses because they were too deep and complex, Kendrick dropped all pretense and released a song produced by DJ Mustard himself to bluntly call Drake and his posse predators while making everyone, including Drake's own base, to dance to the beat.
And we return to Drake's last response. More dislikes than likes. Boring. Lacking the pettiness and replayability that previous disses possessed. A sad, final attempt at a defense and Kendrick doesn't seem to bother responding.
Instead, it seems he leaves it up to the public now. Let them do the rest of the work.
I have to ask one final time.
What made Drake think it was a smart idea to go bar for bar in a lyrical war against a man who won a Pulitzer and has more than three times the amount of Grammy's he does?
RIP Drake, I guess. Didn't realize your entire legacy would be destroyed on a club beat. Ironic, actually.

My Blessed Journey with Papuri! and the Concert Night with Bong & Dang Hermosa
Jerick Combate Reforba
Tumblr media
I am incredibly grateful for the amazing experiences I’ve had recently, particularly the concert night with Bong & Dang Hermosa at the LRV Heritage Hall in Balatas Road, Naga City. These events have strengthened my faith and deepened my connection with the Lord, and I’d like to share my journey with you all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the night of July 16, 2024, I attended a concert featuring Bong & Dang Hermosa. It was an evening filled with uplifting music and heartfelt worship, and I couldn’t have been more excited to be there. I was given this opportunity thanks to Ptr. Joey Piano and Ms. Eva Piano, who graciously allowed me to attend. I expressed my gratitude on Facebook with a post that read:
“By God’s grace, special thanks to Ptr Joey Piano & Eva Joey Piano for allowing me para makapanood ng concert with Doc Bong & Ate Dang Hermosa earlier tonight, and hope I’ll looking forward to see you again very soon. Soli Deo Gloria!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the concert, I had the pleasure of meeting several notable individuals from the Papuri! community and CARE 104.3 DWAY-FM Legazpi City. I was particularly blessed to see Ptr. Abel Manzanilla, Ms. Melisa Cerio-Manzanilla, and Alvis Ayson. Their presence made the night even more special, and I posted on Facebook:
“Special thank you to our Ptr. Abel Manzanilla, Melisa Cerio-Manzanilla & Alvis Ayson of CARE 104.3 The WAY FM Legazpi City, and I’m really so blessed to see you right here in Naga City during Doc Bong & Dang Hermosa concert earlier tonight. Can’t wait to communicate Christ very soon. Soli Deo Gloria!”
Ptr. Abel Manzanilla reacted to this post on July 23, 2024, which further filled my heart with joy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The night was indeed a divine appointment. Being there alone, watching the concert, meeting and greeting the artists, and taking selfies with such legendary Papuri! artists as Bong & Dang Hermosa was a profound experience. I shared my joy with another Facebook post:
“This is not an accidental, kasi mag-isa po akong nanood ng concert at nag-meet and greet. What a blessed night indeed, dahil napakasarap talagang magpuri sa Panginoon.
Special shout out to our Doc Bong & Ate Dang Hermosa. Thank you very much, and sa Diyos lang po ang papuri!
Every day I will thank you; I will praise you forever and ever. – Psalm 145:2 GNT”
Following this concert, on July 17, 2024, I tuned into the “Papuri! Radio Show” Wednesday edition with the Campañer family (Dennis Campañer, Charmaine Manalo-Campañer, and Trisha Denise) via 702 DZAS FEBC Radyo TV Mega Manila. I couldn’t help but comment on a post by 702 DZAS - FEBC Radio’s Facebook page, sharing my excitement and gratitude:
“Mapagpalang Miyerkules ng hapon po, Campañer family!
Kitang-kita ko sa mga posts ko sa aking Facebook timeline, this is not an accidental sa biyaya ng Diyos. Mag-isa po akong nanood ng isang concert yesterday (July 16) diyan sa LRV Heritage Hall, Balatas Road, Naga City. Personal kong nag-meet and greet, and then nag-selfie yung dalawang sikat na legendary Papuri! artists sina Doc Bong & Ate Dang Hermosa, dahil napakasarap talagang magpuri sa Panginoon.
Gusto ko pong mag-special shout out, and say hello to our Ptr. Abel & Ms. Melisa Cerio-Manzanilla, and Kuya Alvis Ayson of CARE 104.3 DWAY-FM Legazpi City.
Pa-request po ng kantang “Laban N’yo Ito, Panginoon!” from Papuri! 23 album. Listening right now via online streaming sa Magarao, Camarines Sur. Thanks and God Bless po, mga ka-Papuri!”
Charmaine Manalo-Campañer reacted to my comment, which was incredibly encouraging.
Earlier this afternoon (July 24, 2024), I was blessed to listen to the song I requested, “Laban N’yo Ito, Panginoon!” from the Papuri! 24 album of the same name was released in 2021, during the “Papuri! Radio Show” Wednesday edition. Despite some buffering issues while listening via online streaming, I was overjoyed to hear the familiar voices of the Campañer family. This song, performed by 29 legendary Papuri! artists and written by Arnel de Pano and Rommel & Susan Guevara, truly lifted my spirit.
As an avid fan of Papuri!, I am deeply moved by the life-changing, positive, and encouraging songs that are played, whether on the radio or streaming platforms. The “Papuri! Radio Show,” which airs every Monday to Friday at 4:30 PM on 702 DZAS FEBC Radyo TV Mega Manila, is particularly close to my heart. These songs of praise and worship to God and the nation resonate deeply with me.
Reflecting on all these experiences, I am filled with gratitude and praise to the Lord. Each encounter and every moment of worship through music has strengthened my faith and brought me closer to God. I look forward to more opportunities to praise Him and share His love with others.
Soli Deo Gloria!

Merging Passions: A Journey in Teaching and Media
On the esteemed grounds of Adamson University, there are many professors who shine brilliantly in their respective roles. However, in the hearts of the students from the College of Communication, there exists one professor who occupies a special place in their hearts. Jessica David, or as her students call her, “Miss Jess,” is an exceptional mentor who possesses the great ability to guide and support freshman students in their transition to college life. Not only does she care about the curriculum, but she also displays a sincere interest in the well-being of her students. She is a highly committed and admirable media practitioner and professor, and the values she imparts to her students are infectiously passing through every corner of the classroom she graces with her presence.
Early Beginnings in Media
Jessica has been captivated by the realm of media since her early years. Born in a time before social media became popular and advanced technology, her passion for radio and television was ignited. Throughout her childhood, she would spend the time getting hooked on watching TV shows and listening to radio broadcasts, immersing herself with the diverse narratives and captivating storytelling. It was during these formative years that a seed of passion was planted in her heart, and she knew deep within that her destiny lay in pursuing a career in the field of media.
“I was already amazed at how the media works, especially you know radio and television … That inspired me, so really at an early age decided na ko (I’ve already decided) I want to work (with) them, you know the reporters ganyan yung mga nakikita ko (that's what I see on TV), mga naririnig ko sa radyo. (what I hear on the radio)” she said.
Rise in the Industry
Having reached a stage in her life where she could pursue her passion, she ventured into the broadcasting media industry at the FM radio station known as Radyo Singko. This particular platform becomes a starting point for her growth as a media practitioner. Initially starting as a programming assistant, she gradually advanced her position over time due to her exceptional writing and speaking voice. These remarkable qualities that Miss Jess has, opened doors to various opportunities, including writing newscasts, producing and co-hosting radio segments, and even delivering news breaks. Each of these experiences has supplied her with a wealth of sensible lessons and professional principles.
“My key insights (working as a media practitioner) is one to learn how to practice critical thinking, and the other is to never stop learning, to never stop honing your creativity.” she said.
From Newsroom to Classroom
Besides working in the field of media broadcasting, Miss Jess also aspired to become a teacher. Fortunately, Adamson University has graciously opened its doors to help fulfill this aspiration. She stated that she would like to share the knowledge and values she has acquired working in media. She also found great joy in meeting new people, engaging in conversations, and forming connections, while also recognizing their individual worth telling inspirational stories. Being a part of an academic environment has allowed David to fulfill her passion for meeting new people. She now has the opportunity to engage and inspire various students each year who come from different backgrounds, have different stories, and possess different capabilities.
Hands-on Approach for Learners
David is the professor of your dreams. She is not the typical strict and uptight instructor that we usually encounter in a classroom setting. Despite her many years of being a professional, she treats her students as equals, as her colleagues.
Transforming the classroom into a dynamic newsroom, she encourages active participation and empowers students to express their perspectives and opinions during discussions. Through her interactive and enjoyable teaching methods, she not only educates her learners but also cultivates their abilities as a producer of content in media. Viewing them as reporters, writers, and researchers, Jessica instills a sense of purpose and potential within her students, enabling them to recognize their own capabilities.
“I would like the students to basically feel good about themselves, yun yung main goal ko (that's my main goal) in teaching … ‘pag nakikita ko na (when I see) the students feel good about themselves, feel happy about what they're doing sa mga (to those) works that I give them, that they feel confident, feeling ko mission accomplished ako. (I feel mission accomplished)” she said.
She also aims for her students to adopt a valuable trait that she fostered during her years of developing as a media practitioner “I want them to learn early on yung (the) values ng (of) professionalism, respect and of course confidence kasi kailangan natin yun (because it's what we need) if you really want to survive in media, and those are some of the few things na (that) I think kailangang (are need to be) equipped (by the) comm students.” she said.
Being a teacher is a challenging job, and Jessica has without a doubt managed to pull it off. She creates a safe and comfortable environment space for her students while also maintaining a deep appreciation for the work she has.
“It's a big responsibility, it's a big deal, yet it's a wonderful opportunity to train future colleagues of mine and future practitioners sa (in) media.” she said.
This remarkable quality not only distinguishes her as an exceptional media practitioner and professor, but also as an individual of great character.

SAD LATE-BREAKING OVERNIGHT: Veteran Negrense Broadcaster and Radio DJ host named DJ Richard Enriquez of 'Super Radyo: Manila' passes away [#OneNETnewsEXCLUSIVE]
Tumblr media
(Written by Rhayniel Saldasal Calimpong / Freelanced News Writer, Reporter and Presenter of OneNETnews)
BACOLOD, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL -- The world of radio and music broadcasting is in mourning on Wednesday as the news of the sudden and untimely passing of a veteran broadcaster and beloved music radio disc jockey host named Jose Steele Enriquez Jr., known to millions as 'DJ Richard Enriquez' rocks the airwaves overnight.
Tumblr media
(PHOTO COURTESY: DJ Richard Enriquez via FB PHOTO)
He was 59 y/o and was a prominent figure in the Philippine music radio scene and a fixture at DZBB-AM 594khz's Super Radyo: Manila within just a few years today on the air. He reportedly passed away on October 25th, 2023 (Quezon and Bacolod local time), a week after his unexpected health issue at a final music radio show called 'Golden Memories'.
Tumblr media
(SCREENGRAB COURTESY: Google Images)
DJ Jose Richard Steele Enriquez Jr., whose born in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental was a name synonymous with the world of radio entertainment. He began his remarkable journey in the 1990s thru DWDM-FM's Pinoy Radio DM 95.5mhz (which now as Eagle FM 95.5). His talent for connecting with listeners and curating the best music for their enjoyment propelled him to greater heights in the industry. Soon, he found his way to ABS-CBN radio before under DZMM-AM Radyo Patrol 630khz: Manila (which also now as DWPM-AM Radyo 630) in the 2010s.
With his distinct voice and warm personality, DJ Richard became an integral part of their lives of many radio enthusiasts. His 'Golden Memories' show was a beloved music and occasional news program in the top-of-the-hour newsbreak segment part, taking listeners on a nostalgic journey through the classics that transcended generations like us. His dedication to preserving the timeless melodies earned him a special place in the hearts of his targeted audience.
It's important to note that DJ Richard's untimely departure raises the question of an unfulfilled dream. Some had speculated that he might venture into hosting a music radio show at Super Radyo: Iloilo, given his possible roots in the relay station to Bacolod City, Negros Occidental via DYSB-AM 1179khz. His connection to the regional music scene, along with his undeniable talent, hinted at the potential for a future in his beloved hometown, before he was moved to Quezon City, Manila, National Capital Region.
But sadly, that dream will remain unattained, as we mourn his sudden loss. His legacy transcended the boundaries of this so-called AM-radio relay in Bacolod City, leaving an indelible mark on the entire nation.

As news of DJ Richard Enriquez's passing spread, per the exclusive radio report of Shirley Escalante's "Super Balita sa Gabi" Thursday night (October 26th, 2023), an outpouring of condolences and tributes flooded social media and radio airwaves. Fans, colleagues and friends remembered him for his genuine warmth, dedication to music and his ability to make everyone feel like family.
Many prominent personalities and organizations paid their respects, with Super Radyo: Manila releasing an official statement expressing their deep sorrow. The music and news radio community has lost a true icon, and his absence of DJ Richard Enriquez will be profoundly felt.

The management and staff of Radio Global Media Arts Network Inc. (RGMAi) said that the DJ Richard Enriquez laid to rest at the 2nd Floor, Mercy B. Loyola Memorial Chapels in Commonwealth Ave., Matandang Balara, Quezon City, Metro Manila, National Capital Region.
The passing of DJ Richard Enriquez officially marks the end of an era in Philippine music, occasional news and radio broadcasting. His charismatic presence and the nostalgia he brought to the airwaves will be dearly missed. The legacy he leaves behind serves as a painful reminder of the power of music and radio to touch our hearts and bring us together.
As the Filipino nation mourns the loss of Super Radyo: Manila's DJ Richard Enriquez, we remember the joy he brought into our lives through his passion for music, news and radio. His memory will forever be entwined with the timeless melodies he shared, and his voice will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who tuned in, making him a true legend in the world of Philippine radio.
(Our regional correspondent Steven Quartz Universe of Cartoon Network News has contributed on this saddened news report.)
EDITOR's NOTE: Our thoughts and prayers at OneNETtv Channel - DYDZ-DTV Ch. 8 / Cable: Ch. 20 for making music radio industry as trusted by millions of Filipino listeners nationwide and worldwide. You gotta hear it from DJ Richard and may the rest in paradise from all of us at ONC and OneNETnews. Madamo na po salamat, kapusong Richard at paalam po!

JUDY AND MARY Lyrics: Brand New Wave Upper Ground
English translation and romanization below the cut.
ENGLISH
A skilled surfer tuned into the Waves on the shore, Immersed their ears in FM and cried on the dark beach at night I find myself missing you at sunset
We kissed, hiding from the parachuters on the observation deck I know what it means to love. My hair accessory sparkle☆sparkle☆sparkles I’ll give it to you in the palm of my handーa summer mirage of a present
You and I are dreaming together, rocking back and forth, making our hearts ache These precious days bring our journey to an end on the equator Follow the tailwinds and the clouds will clear The spotlight from the lighthouse searching the blue skies above
We swam here with things still vague between us But our intertwined fingertips tell me what the future holds So take our hearts led astray and make them one
We’ll go and never turn back Push on ahead, your shirt sleeves fluttering
You and I are dreaming together so that the fireworks don’t go out now These precious days bring our journey to an end on the equator Follow the tailwinds and the clouds will clear The spotlight from the lighthouse searches the blue skies above Telling us our destination Laugh off my jokes
Right now! Hey come together Let's get to the winding winding road Right now! Hey come together Let's get to the winding winding road Come together Right now! Come together Right now! Come together Right now! Let's get to the winding winding road…

SURRENDER
Surrender is a duo of Dave Williams (DW) and Scott, veterans of the Ottawa music scene. They are set to release their debut album soon; in the meantime, give their first single, Hold On, a spin, and read on about their vast experiences in music, top albums, and thoughts on the Ottawa music scene. Upcoming shows:  Stay tuned!
SA: How did Surrender come to be as a band? DW: Scott (Surrender vocalist) and I had been playing in the band Crusades for the past ten years, and in early 2018 we all quite amicably realized that the band had run its course. We did a final tour in the UK/Europe, one hometown show, and played our final two sets at The Fest in Florida. Toward the end of all that, with things winding to their conclusion, Scott and I began discussing working on something new together - something outside of the punk/hardcore scene that we’d been deeply involved in for the previous twenty-plus years. We’re both hugely into pop music, and of the synth-driven variety specifically. I had inherited a Roland Juno 106 when my best friend’s father passed away a few years earlier - it was a fixture in the home studio that I initially learned how to record in - and I sorta longed to make something with it. So, I started writing some songs on it at home, sent them to Scott, he sent some vocal ideas, and we were off. SA: What bands or musicians would you cite as the biggest influences on your sound? DW: Whew. I’ll do my best to keep this as brief as possible. There are some obvious touchstones: Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Tears for Fears, all of Vince Clarke’s 80s output - Erasure’s The Innocents is a big one, Eurythmics, OMD, Cyndi Lauper, The Cure... essentially the more ‘serious’ side of 80s synth-driven pop music. Later 80s/early 90s stuff like Björk/Sugarcubes, New Order and the ‘Madchester’ scene, Jesus Jones, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin and the other Grebo bands. I probably can’t overstate the impact of the quintessential 80s soundtracks: The Lost Boys, Footloose - Kenny Loggins’ “I’m Free” might be my favourite pop song of the decade. I’m a sucker for some of the big producers of that era too. Desmond Child was unstoppable for a while - Cher’s Heart of Stone is another BIG one. As for more modern stuff, I’m pretty obsessed with a lot of the Norwegian pop scene. Cold Mailman is a HUGE influence, as is Hanne Kolstø, Pyke, the new Misty Coast record, there’s a ton of amazing stuff coming out of that country. Some straight-up dance stuff too: Toulouse, Robyn, Pet Shop Boys, ABBA obviously. And of course, the still relatively-new Synthwave scene has some amazing artists: Kristine, FM-84, Michael Oakley, the whole culture of nostalgia surrounding the NewRetroWave world - music, movies, fashion - certainly runs parallel to what we’re doing, and I really dig a lot of it. SA: Thus far in your career, what has been your biggest success? DW: Hm. It’s safe to say that there are MANY variations on how one might measure artistic ‘success’. Coming up in a community where monetary success was never the goal (or at all likely), I’d say that getting to travel all over the map multiple times with my closest friends, meet and befriend people we’d have otherwise never crossed paths with, and see things most folks don’t get to see - all because we wrote some pretty cool songs - is probably my greatest personal success.   SA: On the other hand, what is the biggest challenge you have faced, and how have you dealt with it? DW: I think, for me anyway, the biggest challenge has been balancing my creative life with my personal one. I’m married with three small kids - 7, 4 and 2 - and that can obviously present a different set of priorities than simply hitting the road for most of the year and really pushing a project to its fullest potential. Admittedly I’ve been envious of friends and peers who just throw their gear and clothes in the van and make it happen ‘the old-fashioned way’. But that’s just not the life that I set up for myself, nor is it for Scott or the other folks we’ve played with - and I’m far from resentful of that - it just means we need to take a different approach. Amassing a substantial following or getting the attention of a bigger label isn’t terribly easy when you can’t be doing the literal legwork that other bands can. But I do my best to stay close to the people I’ve worked with all along, to show my gratitude and appreciation, and I work endlessly (to some peoples’ chagrin) on the music we make.   SA: How do you guys approach the song-writing process? DW: Since it’s just the two of us, it’s pretty easy to just bounce things back and forth before we actually get together in a room. Basically, I’ll come up with some chord progressions, leads, arpeggios, whatever on my Juno or my wide array of Arturia soft synths, then I’ll record the rhythm section tracks, typically writing most, if not all, of an instrumental song. I’ll send that to Scott and he’ll come up with vocal melodies and record a demo to send back to me. Then I’ll kind of edit the parts around his vocal ideas until we’re happy with the dynamics and how the song sorta lives and breathes. Then we’ll get together at Scott’s with a selection of wine and beer and a pizza, usually with extensive notes on harmonies and how to punch-up the existing vocal parts. We’ll track that stuff, I might do a few more edits at home, and then we send it to the wildly talented Alex Gamble at The Hive in Toronto for mixing, producing, extra instrumental layers, added drum machine stuff, whatever he hears. That’s pretty much how this first LP has gone, and it’s been an absolute pleasure.   SA: What are your thoughts on the Ottawa music scene? DW: I imagine like anyone who’s spent twenty-plus years in a community, subculture, what have you, I’ve got a lot of thoughts and feelings about the Ottawa music scene. My personal involvement tends to ebb and flow as new waves of participants arrive and others exit - years will go by where it feels like home and then there might be a few where I’m not quite as active - but it’s always very near and dear to me. There’s certainly never a lack of quality artists in this sleepy city. I started going to punk shows when I was thirteen - Punchbuggy (featuring a young Jim Bryson) at the Greely Legion was my first show ever - and twenty-five years later there are still a ton of the same faces mixed in with a ton of different ones. That’s a pretty special thing.   SA: As I understand it, you guys have been active in other bands of quite different genres in the past. Why SURRENDER, and why now? DW: As I mentioned, Crusades finished our ten-year run this past October. Black Tower, the sorta traditional heavy metal band I play drums in - with Scott on bass and his partner Erin on guitar and vocals - also decided to take it easy for a while, and although I still kinda ‘moonlight’ with The Steve Adamyk Band, that wasn’t happening at the time. Scott had also just wrapped up the “album cycle” with his band The Creeps and didn’t have much on the horizon there. I briefly played in a hardcore band called Power of Fear that did a few shows, but the current hardcore scene is very... let’s say... ‘youthful’, and it became apparent pretty quickly that it wasn’t something I wanted to stick with. Mostly I just wanted to make music with Scott, and based on our mutual love for 80s/90s pop music (and Scott’s equally toned down schedule), we decided to take a crack at doing something closer to the music we listen to the most. And honestly, I’d been writing and playing fast and/or aggressive music for so long, I really just wanted to make something upbeat and positive that people could dance to.   SA: A question for fun: your three desert island albums. What would they be and why? DW: Alright, this isn’t gonna be easy. Or brief. Note: these aren’t necessarily my favourite albums of all time (certainly they’re in the Top Ten), but if I’m gonna be listening to these on whatever hi-fi system this hypothetical island has until I wither away, here’s what I’d hope washed ashore with me (also, I’m gonna cheat using a nostalgia loophole):
1. Alice Cooper - Love It to Death / Killer (my Dad’s old dubbed cassette version) These two albums, both released in 1971, were my first love. They were on a single cassette in my Dad’s collection and really still exist as a single entity to me. I always cite my discovery of these two albums, probably at 4-5 years old, as the foundation for my entire musical life to come. Not only were they mysterious and rather frightening, but there was an eclecticism in this batch of songs that made everything I fell in love with afterward - metal, punk, prog, pop, garage, etc. - seem somehow part of the same cloth. Alice and that original band showed me very early on that there’s no need to limit oneself to the confines of a style, sound, genre, whatever. Most important records that ever happened to me.
2. Misfits - Walk Among Us / Earth A.D. / Legacy of Brutality (also a homemade cassette version c/o my friend Judd’s older sister, fully decorated with black Sharpie and White-Out) If early Alice Cooper set me on the weirdo path as a youngster, it was a single afternoon taping CDs in my friend Judd’s bedroom that locked me into the punk rock subculture forever. We’d been Guns N Roses turned Pantera turned Sepultura fans like many a shitty kid of the 80s/90s, and Danzig’s ‘Mother’ was in heavy rotation everywhere at the time, so we were no stranger to that beautiful beast’s howl. When Judd’s sister borrowed a stack of Misfits CDs from a pal at school and explained to us that this was Glenn Danzig’s old band (of course we recognized the name and logo from Rockabilia ads and Cliff Burton photos), we dove in assuming we knew what was coming. We most certainly did not. The Misfits became my favourite band that day and have been for every day since.
3. Peter Gabriel - So Every time I listen to this incredible record, I discover new things I love about it. A perpetual go-to and a true monument to the possibilities within pop music (shout out to Daniel Lanois there too). I was going to choose his Shaking the Tree compilation because it contains my favourite PG track - the piano version of “Here Comes the Flood” - but I figure I’d cheated enough with the first two answers. ...also Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love, The Hellacopters’ High Visibility, Cold Mailman’s Everything Aflutter, Cave In’s Jupiter, and The Lemonheads’ It’s A Shame About Ray. This is an unfair question.   SA: Finally, what comes next for Surrender moving into 2019 and beyond? Best of luck! DW: First on the agenda is to find an ideal home for the LP. We’d kinda like to step out from beneath the umbrella of labels we’ve worked with in the past, but there are no specific plans thus far. Just release the second single, hope the feedback is good and see if anyone wants to partner up for the long haul. As far as any live performances go, that’s a big question mark. It’s been so great doing this with just the two of us, it’s hard to imagine inviting anyone else into the fold. That said, it’s even harder to picture just the two of us on stage like Yazoo on “Top of The Pops,” so who knows? Thanks so much!

Evidence of aliens? What to make of research and reporting on 'Oumuamua, our visitor from space
by Steven Tingay
Tumblr media
An artist’s impression of `Oumuamua, the first interstellar object discovered in the Solar System. ESA/Hubble, NASA, ESO, M. Kornmesser, CC BY
This article is part of our occasional long read series Zoom Out, where authors explore key ideas in science and technology in the broader context of society and humanity.
As an astrophysicist, probably the most common question I get asked is: “Are we alone in the universe and do aliens exist?”
There is no doubt: people love to think and talk about aliens. Hence, stories about the search for extraterrestrial intelligence get picked up and reported with gusto in the media.
But what really lies at the heart of this complicated and popular topic is evidence – the nature of any evidence of alien life, how we view and respect this evidence, and how this is communicated to the public.
Nowhere is this more important than in the coverage of scientific studies of a mystery object – ‘Oumuamua – that was recently discovered passing through our Solar System. For example, two publications in two respected peer-reviewed journals prompted very different reactions.
Hello 'Oumuamua
'Oumuamua, meaning scout or messenger in Hawaiian, is the name given to the first detected interstellar object to visit our Solar System. On discovery last year, 'Oumuamua was classified as a comet, but this was later withdrawn when no evidence for cometary activity was detected.
'Oumuamua was quickly found to have an orbit that does not belong to our Solar System. It has an origin elsewhere in our galaxy, and a trajectory that saw it traverse the inner Solar System over the course of a few months.
It passed close to the Sun and to Earth, and was found to have an unusual geometry, about 200 metres long and some 35 metres wide, rotating every seven hours.
youtube
Observations with ESO’s Very Large Telescope and others have shown that this unique object is dark, reddish in colour, and highly elongated. Credit: ESO.
The discovery of 'Oumuamua generated a lot of attention in the scientific community, and in the media. Given its unusual geometry and its origin outside the Solar System, questions were soon asked as to whether 'Oumuamua could be a spacecraft.
Observations were made with radio telescopes to search for any direct evidence of transmissions indicating intelligent life, including by a team led by me using an Australian telescope (the Murchison Widefield Array). We listened around FM radio frequencies, on the basis that any intelligent life on 'Oumuamua may recognise FM frequencies popular on Earth.
No direct evidence of intelligent life was ever found in these searches.
Tumblr media

Extensive and impressive observations with a range of telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope, were made to accurately determine 'Oumuamua’s trajectory. Results of the study, by a team of astronomers led by the European Space Agency’s Marco Micheli, were published in Nature in June.
These very careful observations showed that 'Oumuamua accelerated as it left the Solar System, revealing the existence of “non-gravitational forces”. This means that the trajectory of the object could not be explained just by the gravity of the Sun and other major objects in our Solar System.
A range of possible explanations for the acceleration exist. One is that heated gas escaping from 'Oumuamua (outgassing) could produce a force that caused the observed acceleration. This is commonly seen in normal comets.
But 'Oumuamua still shows no evidence for cometary activity. Micheli’s team ran through six possible explanations and concluded that outgassing is the most likely option, even though there is no direct evidence that this is the case.
They showed that the acceleration of 'Oumuamua is unusual, but within the bounds of what has been seen previously for Solar System comets.
One of the explanations discounted by the study team is that 'Oumuamua was accelerated by radiation pressure from our Sun. Radiation from the Sun can push objects away from it.
But they concluded that this explanation is not preferred, because it means that the density of 'Oumuamua would have to be very low. An object needs have a large surface area and low mass (low density) to be accelerated by radiation pressure.
Could it be aliens?
Another study by postdoctoral researcher Shmuel Bialy and distinguished astronomer Avi Loeb, from Harvard University, took a different approach.
Details of the study have just been published in November’s The Astrophysical Journal Letters, but were available online earlier.
The authors chose to assume solar radiation pressure to be the cause of the acceleration, and then determined the properties of 'Oumuamua required to make this work. They require an object with thickness less than 1mm, an areal mass density of 1 to 2 grams per square centimetre, and a large area.
It is unlikely that nature would produce such an extreme geometry. The authors quickly mention this, before moving to a discussion that, under the assumption that solar radiation is the cause for the acceleration, 'Oumuamua is artificial - that means the product of an alien civilization.
The properties the authors derive under their assumptions are similar to those of solar sails being designed and built by humans as a possible way to travel interstellar distances.
Bialy and Loeb spend half of their article discussion section on the idea that 'Oumuamua could be a defunct or active solar sail belonging to an alien civilization.

The nature and communication of evidence
Bialy and Loeb did not issue a press release about their study, but the media picked up the paper once it was accepted and available online, prior to this week’s journal publication.
(This is something that happened to me in 2012, leading to my published non-detection of aliens being run on the front page of the BBC news website.)
Bialy and Loeb’s publication attracted headlines such as this, for example: “Harvard astronomers claim Oumuamua is ALIEN PROBE - 'Nothing like we’ve ever seen!’”. Most other reporting was more balanced.
This is pretty normal. A lot of the media jump to aliens in the reporting of space and astronomy, even when the original reported studies have never mentioned aliens. Recent reporting of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) is an example.
What surprised me was the reaction of some of my colleagues to Bialy and Loeb’s paper. On social media, there have been some pretty personal attacks by scientists – on Loeb in particular – for being in the media for this work.
Both new studies lay out their assumptions, cite substantial evidence, and undertake rigorous calculations. Both were accepted by top-quality journals after independent peer review.
Both finish with bottom lines that the studies of ‘Oumuamua are inconclusive and we will need to examine more such objects that come through the Solar System in the future.
Both sets of authors also come up with different perspectives and motivate different questions. But Loeb has ended up in the media, talking about his paper, and is being panned by some colleagues for it.
Since the pre-journal paper was picked up he told me he has been swamped by media interest.
I use the discussions with the media as a platform for highlighting the standard scientific methodology: an anomaly is observed in data, the standard explanation fails to explain it, and so an alternative interpretation is proposed.
I encourage anyone with a better explanation to write a paper about it and publish it. Wrong interpretations can be ruled out when more data will be released on 'Oumuamua or other members of its population in the future.
As for the negative reactions he has received, he referred to an article he recently published where he paraphrased another scientist known for his once-controversial theories.
As Galileo reasoned after looking through his telescope, “in the sciences, the authority of a thousand is not worth as much as the humble reasoning of a single individual”.
Let’s talk about evidence
Given my work on observations of 'Oumuamua, a few journalists have contacted me for comment.
These have been great opportunities to discuss in depth with journalists the nature of evidence, the difference between something being consistent with observations and direct evidence for a conclusion, and the need for evidence to be commensurate with the impact of a claim.
If aliens are claimed, direct and robust evidence is required – not a conclusion based on a few observations that are difficult to explain, plus a bunch of assumptions.
But no scientist has claimed 'Oumuamua is alien in this discussion – they have just raised questions and explored answers.
There is no point in shying away from a proper discussion on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, or in being personally critical of colleagues.
Scientists should take every opportunity to engage with the public and the media on the topic, given the public’s interest and the media’s willingness to report.
It is interesting, fun, and scientific, and a great opportunity to discuss the scientific method and science in an engaging manner. The media reporting of 'Oumuamua shows that (aside from a few headlines), the content of reports is generally pretty good and responsible.
Whatever 'Oumuamua is (almost certainly not made by aliens, in my view), it is a fascinating object and presents lots of interesting scientific questions that will trigger further studies and observations.
We will never see 'Oumuamua again, and we may never know exactly what it is. But seeing 'Oumuamua in the news is likely to inspire some kids to take up a career in science.

Celebrating 76 Years of Communicating Christ: A Memorable Visit to FEBC PH
Jerick Combate Reforba
Tumblr media
Philippians 1:6 GNT declares, “And so I am sure that God, who began this good work in you, will carry it on until it is finished on the Day of Christ Jesus.” This powerful scripture encapsulates the journey and mission of FEBC Philippines, an organization devoted to bringing Christ to the world through radio for the past 76 years.
Four months ago, I had the distinct privilege of visiting the 38th Floor of One Corporate Center in Ortigas, Pasig City, the home of FEBC Philippines. This visit holds a special place in my heart, marking a significant moment in my longstanding partnership with FEBC. It was a dream come true to step into the very place where the message of Christ is broadcasted across the nation and beyond.
FEBC Philippines has been a steadfast presence in my life, nurturing my spiritual growth and providing comfort through its diverse programming. I have been an avid listener and supporter of their initiatives, faithfully tuning into my favorite shows on CARE 104.3 DWAY-FM Legazpi City, such as “Oras Na, Bicolandia!” hosted by Raquel Camo-Landong and Rico Gelit, “Buhay Pamilya,” “TNT: Your Lunch Break Café On-Air” with Cecil Amog, “Youth Today,” and “Digdi sa Bicol” with Sam Zenarosa. Each program has offered invaluable insights, encouragement, and a sense of community, making them an integral part of my daily routine.
Additionally, I eagerly follow the programs of 702 DZAS Mega Manila. Shows like “Oras Na, Pilipinas!” with Haydee Bernardo-Sampang, “Inspirations Unlimited,” and the “Papuri! Radio Show” have also deeply resonated with me. These programs not only provide spiritual nourishment but also foster a sense of connection with fellow believers across the country.
The visit to FEBC’s headquarters was more than just a physical journey; it was a spiritual pilgrimage. Standing in the place where dedicated individuals work tirelessly to broadcast the gospel filled me with immense gratitude and admiration. The sight of the FEBC logo, proudly displayed, reminded me of the countless lives touched by their ministry over the decades.
The theme “WHAT HE BEGAN, HE WILL COMPLETE” aptly reflects FEBC’s unwavering commitment to its mission. Since its inception in 1948, FEBC Philippines has continually evolved, adapting to the changing times while steadfastly proclaiming the unchanging message of Christ. This 76th anniversary marks not just a milestone but a testament to God’s faithfulness in sustaining and expanding their ministry.
Reflecting on Philippians 1:6, I am reminded that every trial and challenge I face is part of the good work God is performing in my life. FEBC’s programs have been a source of strength and hope, reinforcing my faith and reminding me of God’s promises. As FEBC celebrates its anniversary, I am filled with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to supporting their mission.
In conclusion, my visit to FEBC Philippines was a profoundly enriching experience. It reinforced my belief in the power of media to transform lives and spread the gospel. As FEBC continues its journey of communicating Christ to the world, I am honored to be a part of their story, a story of faith, perseverance, and divine purpose. Here’s to many more years of bringing Christ’s love and message to every corner of the globe. To God be all the glory! 🙏❤️📻

Nazareth
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lead vocals, Dan Mcafferty
born 1946-2022, recently died.
Dan Mcafferty, lead vocalist of the mid70s band Nazareth, a Scottish English band, died recently, the statement came from a Nazareth band insider, still too depressed to make any statement regarding his death. They will issue statement for later that is what the reports said.
Nazareth is a huge band in terms of international fame and was even able to hold a concert at the Araneta Coliseum in the early 80s.
The band is so huge it has an unprecedented hit songs one after the other that can be repeatedly heard on the FM band during those times. I was in my freshman year at FEU 1976-77 when Nazareths greatest hits album are allready displayed in every record bar in Recto, Morayta, Olongapo, Avenida, Caloocan ,Raon and to just about any record bar selling singles and long playing albums. "Love Hurts", a soulful ballad showcasing the soulful voice of Dan can be heard everywhere way back then. Every live band playing on Shakeys always has it in their repertoire along with "Hotel California" and Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton. There was a live band scene during those times. Freddie Aguilar is playing folksongs somewhere in Ermita while Gary Perez and Sampaguita can be seen headlining every NewMoon Concert edition playing "Tao" and "Bonggahan".
"Dream On, though its hard to tell, though your e fooling yourself, Dream On...". The soulful husky voice of Dan Mcafferty highpitched, poetic and really soul keeps haunting the ears of every Rocker and MetalMinds until today, Aged 50,55, 60 and up thats the age bracket of the 70s MetalMinds, allready grandfatherly today, washed up and totally mellowed down type of personality. "Keep on faking it, keep on using it, youre the one whos got no soul, Youre the one whos hearts grown cold..." The song simply sees the futility probably of being a copycat band but the times is really characterized by "Damned if you do, damned if you dont" type of social condition. Dropping out of college, several odd jobs, drug addiction, rehab life, the 70s can still be seen as " A generation lost in space, with no time left to start again.." kind of times. The rich are few, the poor plenty in numbers. Manila is so full of informal settler shanties, rampant criminality and a worse kind of drug addiction problem. We still keep learning our lessons the hard way. A man must break his back to earn his day of leisure. The leading poets, writers and musicians of our time encapsulated that 70s spirit as can be heard and seen through their music and artform. Lualhati Bautista even wrote a book "Dekada70". Eddie Romero created "Ganito Kami Noon, Paano na kayo Ngayon", starring Christopher de Leon. Ive seen "Tinimbang ka Ngunit Kulang" where Lolita Rodriguez played a Taong Grasa kind of character and Vilma Santos as Dyesebel. Lino Brocka came up with "Insiang" and "Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag" starring Bembol Rocco.
Brocka captured the very essence of the Manila Scene in the 70s with his two films.
Nazareth with Dan Mcafferty provided the poetic lines. "I'm young, I know but even so, I know I feel from you. I really learned a lot, really learned a lot. Love is just a lie meant to make you blue, Oooh, Ooh Love Hurts."
His character could be easily imagined as a lonely Night Owl in a bar in Ermita where there are dancing stripteasers in the middle of the night while just around the corner, a flash of the neon signs on Heartbreak Hotels reveals man in dark glasses coming in and out of those hotel rooms to the tune of a band playing to just two or
three Love Vigilantes on a graveyard shift.
"Living on my Own, I know am to blame m locked with my chains and youre free. Falling like a stone, m caught up and bound and youre free."
Nazareth has touched the lives of perhaps millions and millions more with their own unique rock and bluesy style of playing.
Nazareth on Legends*

Who is Maine Mendoza for this Storyteller?
Maine is just a simple celebrity for me as I watched her first in July of 2015. Few months after that, I started venturing in my inconsistent freelance career. I’m a home-based content writer submitting my outputs through email or uploading in a Wordpress admin account. I’ll make sure at 12:00, I have to watch Eat Bulaga to have a glimpse of her. As the days passed by, I just find myself laughing and smiling at the slapstick comedy and funny antics of her silent character relying on Dubsmash.
I did not know it was a point of no return of my fangirling on Maine.
Being in a fandom is not new to me. I was an active UAAP vball fan before to the point I would even watch highschool vball games to know who are the prized bluechip recruits all UAAP teams want to have in their program. I made my Twitter account almost a decade ago to follow the Gosiengfiao sisters (Alodia and Ashley) to interact with them via tweets. Also, through Twitter and other socmed sites, I got to be in a fangroup of Pinay American Idol finalist Thia Megia and saw her in person. Through social media too, I met other fans of our Olympian Yan Lariba and met her in a friendly encounter.
I know the good side and also the bad side of fangirling. I’ve been into useless arguments with online trolls and I admit their words get to me…until I just learned to be indifferent and not mind it at all. Then here comes Maine. I was hesitant to be a vocal fan because of her immense popularity but again she just have that “something” in her that I want to root for.
I started profiling Maine like how I used to in the other celebrities I look up to her public accounts like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Ask.fm and lastly her blog….
MAY BLOG SI MAINE!!!
MGA KAPITBAHAY MAY BLOG SI MAINE!!!
Yes, I was surprised to know she has a blog!! My writer heart is leaping with joy!! That was the conviction I told myself it would be easier to fangirl for her since writing is my core and passion.
I started following her and knowing more about her like how she is close to her family, the rumors she went to PBB Auditions, and her other past Youtube uploaded videos. But I was still a silent fan back then since I am clueless how to handle a barrage of comments from other fans once I begin to be vocal. I am happy as a silent fan until the inevitable thing happened…
Maine released her Open Letter in November 26, 2017.
Yes, I won’t forget how I cried after reading it and not enjoying the ice cream I am eating on a Sunday afternoon. I began to connect the dots. I wanted to hate some people and wish them to have double, triple the pains of whatever Maine felt. I do want to start expressing my support for her to prove there are still like me…”isa sa sampu” fans of Maine.
The problem though is I am still at a down moment by that time. I failed to handle the pressure of a teaching career. I love the kids inside the classroom but the paperworks overwhelmed me. Attendance, quizzes, understanding the lesson plan, submitting other requirement, etc---those did not fare good for me. I just realized I only want to be with the kids even if I am with them 6-7 hours straight, I don’t get tired at all. I found out I like to be a public speaker but I cannot cope up with the tremendous responsibilities of the teacher.
Being an overthinker, I felt I failed again not myself but my family and everyone who believed in me. I was down for months and clueless what to do next. I even think if there would still be a company or business owner who would take risk with me seeing my resume with months of no work as I rested after resigning from the teaching post.
I thought of how I am a burden again and have no direction in my career, whereas my batchmates might already be settling down with their partners, finishing their master’s degree, or exploring more of what they can do abroad. There I was, clueless and do not know again where to start. I am just thankful I have a supportive family and set of friends who waited until I got tired of being afraid and overthinking.
There were even days I wish I can just sleep forever and not wake up to those clueless and empty days again. I was also telling God that time I wish I was the one He took instead of my papa who passed away in 2007 due to an illness. Because my papa would be able to help my family instead of my inconsistency, fears, and overthinking. I was in that bargaining stage and I am too blinded, hurt, and tired to see my own worth and potential.
In those dark times, I would pray for a direction…for an enlightenment. Angels in the form of my friends and my family gave me words to fight back. It was enough to hold on….until I saw an excerpt from Maine’s book through an online article of cosmo.ph promoting her book:
“Things may go from bad to worse and you might feel like it’s never going to change, but believe me when I say it will get better. Everything will be all right, I promise you. We may have our own different battles, but remember there is only one God. He is always looking down on us wherever we go and whatever obstacle we face. You may currently be in a lot of pain, but you never know what God has in store for your future.
Marami pang magagandang bagay ang mangyayari sa buhay mo. Magtiwala ka. Kapit lang, laban lang.
P.S.  If you are looking for a sign on whether you should still hold on or give up, this is it. Hold on tight, my dear. Don't you ever give up; never ever give up. “
I cried and smiled after reading it. “Ikaw talaga Lord ha, si Maine pa pinadala Mo rin para sabihin kaya ko pa.” The darker those moments are for me, the brighter are all the Bearers of Light shone in my life. I begin to see more how my mama is patient with me, how my brothers would ask what do I want to eat or where do I want to go, friends who would tell me they will meet me anywhere I wish to be…and that excerpt from Maine’s book.
So I told myself: May laban pa ako. Isang subok pa.
It took me until January to gather all my guts. I started editing my resume. I came back to my freelancing career by looking for homebased jobs. It was also the time I just thought of blogging for Maine. I was still doubting if I am ready to be a vocal fan…but I know in my heart if God is telling me to do something even if I am still scared or doubtful of it.
I posted my first entry about Maine on this tumblr account. What comes next are series of unexpected blessings coming in my way…I did not look for them but the opportunities found me instead. Here are some of them:
(a)    Got a DM asking if I can write for Clairedelfinmedia.com after they read my blog about Maine and Nadine parallelisms
(b)   Got invited twice to Maine’s bday party by generous fans. First is when I told her she is a Bearer of Light and we are her 10th heartbeat in the #EnchantressMaine23. Second is when I co-host in the #DearMaine bday event.
(c)    An anonymous fan who works abroad gifted me a Microsoft Surface Tablet just because she is thankful for my support for Maine.
(d)   Meeting some fans who are as level-headed and as classy like Maine I felt I attended a business conference instead of a fan event.
(e)   Getting back on my feet again to find the direction in my career.
Also, I am grateful my mama is a silent fan of Maine. You see, I am already in my late 20s but she treats me like a pre-teen kid and I find it difficult to ask permission to go to different places and stay late. Kung pwede 6pm sa bahay na ako at may number si mama ng lahat ng kasama ko para mapanatag siya. So I was surprised it was easy for me to ask permission going to Maine’s bday event even if I come home late at evening. As my mama said, “May swerteng dala sayo si Maine, puntahan mo lang pag meron.”
Of course, going back to my freelance career is not as smooth as what I expected. Rejections and no follow-up interviews came, some would even ask me to stop writing for them and they would just pay me for the weeks I wrote, or I have already written an article then suddenly my contact person said the client forgot to ask for the specific writer and that isn’t me.
It was still difficult but I am grateful to find this new courage, thanks to God’s constant faithfulness in my life and to all my Bearers of Light. In 2018 too, I found CCF, a Christian church whom I am comfortable with in sharing my flaws and mistakes. They focus more on God’s grace, justice, and mercy for everyone than other close-minded religious people or groups who condemn sinners.
Thanks to Maine too, I started to try new things which I still hesitated before. I remembered reading her IG post on her skydiving experience. She encouraged us to try things out even if we are still scared. In 2018, I tried acting workshop and auditioned in a production house for a voice-over artist. I even tried if I could be a female reporter in an FM station. Although these things haven’t yet prospered for me, I am happy to try it out and see what else I can try aside from writing.
At present, I invested in a copywriting module and joined an uplifting and supportive Filipino community of freelance copywriters in a Facebook group. I am determined to venture into copywriting because it is parallel to my passion in storytelling and writing. The process of improving myself excites me.  I am a homebased content writer (as of this time) who still have a lowpay rate but I am enjoying the flexibility of my time. Plus, the company I work for recently gave me incentives and gift certificates.
Going back to one of the dark times in my life and just want to give up, God sent His angels in different forms to remind me I still have to fulfill His purpose, His story, and His plans in my life. He intended to break my heart and dreams so He can form it with a new one. In those times, God chose Maine too to tell me I can and I will be able to do it with God’s help.
This is just a fraction of what Maine did for me. I am more than thankful and will always support her even in the future that she is a private citizen and enjoys that under-the-radar life away from the fame and attention of public.
Salamat talaga Maine sa lahat lahat!
Bearer of Light, please keep on radiating!
God rewarded your sacrifices and good heart.
Embrace the genuine happiness you have now.
