Celebrating 76 Years of Communicating Christ: A Memorable Visit to FEBC PH
Jerick Combate Reforba
Philippians 1:6 GNT declares, “And so I am sure that God, who began this good work in you, will carry it on until it is finished on the Day of Christ Jesus.” This powerful scripture encapsulates the journey and mission of FEBC Philippines, an organization devoted to bringing Christ to the world through radio for the past 76 years.
Four months ago, I had the distinct privilege of visiting the 38th Floor of One Corporate Center in Ortigas, Pasig City, the home of FEBC Philippines. This visit holds a special place in my heart, marking a significant moment in my longstanding partnership with FEBC. It was a dream come true to step into the very place where the message of Christ is broadcasted across the nation and beyond.
FEBC Philippines has been a steadfast presence in my life, nurturing my spiritual growth and providing comfort through its diverse programming. I have been an avid listener and supporter of their initiatives, faithfully tuning into my favorite shows on CARE 104.3 DWAY-FM Legazpi City, such as “Oras Na, Bicolandia!” hosted by Raquel Camo-Landong and Rico Gelit, “Buhay Pamilya,” “TNT: Your Lunch Break Café On-Air” with Cecil Amog, “Youth Today,” and “Digdi sa Bicol” with Sam Zenarosa. Each program has offered invaluable insights, encouragement, and a sense of community, making them an integral part of my daily routine.
Additionally, I eagerly follow the programs of 702 DZAS Mega Manila. Shows like “Oras Na, Pilipinas!” with Haydee Bernardo-Sampang, “Inspirations Unlimited,” and the “Papuri! Radio Show” have also deeply resonated with me. These programs not only provide spiritual nourishment but also foster a sense of connection with fellow believers across the country.
The visit to FEBC’s headquarters was more than just a physical journey; it was a spiritual pilgrimage. Standing in the place where dedicated individuals work tirelessly to broadcast the gospel filled me with immense gratitude and admiration. The sight of the FEBC logo, proudly displayed, reminded me of the countless lives touched by their ministry over the decades.
The theme “WHAT HE BEGAN, HE WILL COMPLETE” aptly reflects FEBC’s unwavering commitment to its mission. Since its inception in 1948, FEBC Philippines has continually evolved, adapting to the changing times while steadfastly proclaiming the unchanging message of Christ. This 76th anniversary marks not just a milestone but a testament to God’s faithfulness in sustaining and expanding their ministry.
Reflecting on Philippians 1:6, I am reminded that every trial and challenge I face is part of the good work God is performing in my life. FEBC’s programs have been a source of strength and hope, reinforcing my faith and reminding me of God’s promises. As FEBC celebrates its anniversary, I am filled with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to supporting their mission.
In conclusion, my visit to FEBC Philippines was a profoundly enriching experience. It reinforced my belief in the power of media to transform lives and spread the gospel. As FEBC continues its journey of communicating Christ to the world, I am honored to be a part of their story, a story of faith, perseverance, and divine purpose. Here’s to many more years of bringing Christ’s love and message to every corner of the globe. To God be all the glory! 🙏❤️📻

A Decade of Surprises
2020 surely has been a hell of a roller coaster ride.
But the promise of a fresh start looms in the horizon. Actually, it is 2021 that marks the start of a new decade. So, I looked back at the decade that was (2011-2020) and tried to capture a favourite highlight for each year.
I learned from the Psalmist of old that the key to bravely step into the future is to do so by having your eyes focused, not on the present circumstances, but on the faithfulness of God in the past. Perhaps, this mind-shift is the key to be able to sing of what Easter can bring while stuck in the midst of a terrible exile and what seems to be a much delayed exodus.
So here's a snapshot of ten years* with God throwing happy surprises at every turn. 2011 -I left the Institute for Studies on Asian Church and Culture (ISACC) to coordinate the advocacy work on integral mission of Micah Challenge Philippines (now just Micah Philippines) 2012 -Together with a group of thought leaders, we launched Pananaw Pinoy to do what is now called as 'public theology’; we wrote editorials for the radio stations of FEBC Philippines and a column in the news daily People’s Tonite 2013 -Got invited to join the faculty of the MSW department of Asian Seminary of Christian Ministries (ASCM) and handle the courses on the integration of faith and spirituality in social development work 2014 -OMF Literature published my second book "Boring Ba Ang Bible Mo?" which turned out to be a bestseller and later on won the Filipino Reader's Choice award 2015 -Together with a bunch of collaborators, I proposed a thousand years of life together with my fiance then, Shane, before an audience of several thousands of people at the Cuneta Astrodome 2016 -I got selected to join the Philippine squad for the Lausanne Younger Leaders Gathering (YLG) in Jakarta, Indonesia 2017 -Yumichan came into the world and we became a happy family of three 2018 -I joined the global theology team of Tearfund to serve as the theological education network coordinator for East & South East Asia 2019 -I was invited to be one of the five 'millennial' speakers for the plenary sessions of the Asia Theological Association (ATA) triennial assembly in Singapore on the theme “The Future Church: A Theological Response” 2020 -While I thought the year will be thoroughly unproductive because of the challenges of the pandemic, I was able to contribute a chapter each to two books for SCM Press in the UK (yes!), one on digital missiology and the other on digital theology
There is a point in my life where I just stopped listing what exactly I want to do and achieve. I resolved to just feel my way and open myself to God’s surprises. In truth, there is no way I could have planned for these highlights of my past decade. They all came to me like a curve ball. Almost always I found myself at a loss on how to respond. But I just trusted that it must be God who is behind it and His grace that made it possible. My favorite analogy of the “turtle on the fence post” did serve as a paradigm on how I viewed and approached life and all its eccentricities. How will a turtle end up atop a fence post? Someone must have placed it there.
The biggest lesson of the 2020 pandemic for me is the emptiness of the Western preoccupation to control and design the future. It was only when I dived deep into decolonial thinking that I realized the richness of the Eastern mindset as exemplified in the book of Psalms. Hope is built on faith shaped by the memories of being loved.
A decade of work advocating for integral mission sure felt like a long time. I must say though: what a journey it has been! The adventure started with a simple challenge; I once asked my ‘boss’ then if there's anything in the strategic plan of our organization about engaging my generation with the vision of transforming society. The response I got was that people are accountable to their own generation. And so, it is up to me and my fellow millennials to work out our distinct way of “doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with our God” (Micah 6:8).
I saw myself spending the past ten years doing exactly that. But the more exciting part of the journey were the friends, circles, and communities of like-minded folks that Shane and I met along the way, including mentors who kept us grounded and kept us going.
As we all face a new year still wrapped with uncertainties and anxieties, we trust that the God who has sent us out on a journey in the past decade shall continue to accompany us in the next.
Domo arigato gozaimasu!
-Rei Lemuel Crizaldo (January 1, 2021)
“I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalms 89:1)
*Note: All throughout these years, I continue to serve as the teaching pastor of our rural church in Norzagaray, Bulacan, as the theological consultant of what could be the country’s biggest megachurch, and as an avid fan of Japanese anime. I still dream of being able to write a blog series or a short book on ‘Narutology.’

Happy Father's Day to my Dad!

The Sudden Revival of the Spirit
Last June 2, it was my very first time to attend the annual anniversary of FEBC Philippines, particularly 702 DzAS. Actually, it is already on its 64th year and I didn’t expect that I would be given a chance to attend and experience on how the Lord moved mightily in the lives of the members of the non-profit organization. Apart from it, I was already born three days after its existence for the past forty-two years. Besides, there were three things which I would like to share especially on how it moved me much when it comes on how my second life which the Lord has given me six years ago. As far as I have remembered, that day begun on with a surprise specifically when I have entered the auditorium or what the people call as the venue of the event. These three things which I intend to share are namely: (1) The energetic atmosphere; (2) The promising encounter; and (3) The inspiring moment.
Here is how my experience has changed during the course of the event:
ENERGETIC ATMOSPHERE
Hours before the event would officially start, when I have already entered the auditorium, at first, I felt like slightly scared for the environment was completely new to me and I do not know on how the event would take place for it is my first time to take part in the event. I remember, two days before the event, I was randomly selected by this person [whose its identity will be revealed on the latter part of the write-up] who is a radio host of his program. I was shocked to hear that I was selected because I haven’t heard him reading the responses of the listeners for he had to choose five winners on their anniversary promo. Going back to the main subject matter, I was also too hesitant to have an encounter with him because I was a bit scared and nervous to get to know him more. As minutes come closer to the event, I felt so excited to experience on how that the event would turn out. I had to visit the booths which sell numerous insightful and inspiring books and audio books.
As the event is beginning, it officially marked with a period of praise and worship. I have felt the completely intensified crowd during the start of the praise and worship done by another Christian Church, thus, it is also my second time to have such an experience too. I was reminded when I would always enter the building of Saint Luke’s College of Nursing beck during my college days due to the strong intensity of the students belonging to that college even in other aspects of becoming a student in the university. At the first place, I don’t get it on how it would turn out until those songs slowly ingest in my mind and in my spirit. My fears are immediately dispelled as the time of praise and worship progresses. I haven’t experienced such euphoria and excitement during that day. I was completely energized especially when I had to claim the surprise which was in-store for me on that day which kept me awake for two sleepless nights. It was also a confirmation, therefore, coming from the Lord if I would attend the event on that day. I was also reminded on how things must be done especially when one needs to reach for it. It would always require a praying spirit to determine if he wants to achieve it but it must be done legally.
PROMISING ENCOUNTER
Minutes before the program end, I found out that I have my medal of honor with me and it was placed in the pocket of my polo shirt. Before I leave the venue of the event, I had to keep myself composed until I had an easy access to the backstage. My nervous feeling was eventually erased especially when I prayed for that time in order to meet him with much civility and decency. The moment I got to the backstage, I needed to take a very deep breathe before talking to this person. When I entered the backstage, DJ Dave Rutaquio had to approach me first until I have already introduced myself to him eventually. At the first place, it must not really happen until I have remembered that a sign was shown to me a day before the event during my prayer time. During the first time encounter, I just picked out the Medal of Honor out of my pocket until I had to give it to him right away.
Seconds after I gave it to him, he was so surprised and suddenly asked me if I am serious about it until I told him that I am completely serious about it. DJ Dave surprisingly asked me why would I give him my Medal of Honor until I laid my cards on his table that I have been keeping my only object and praying for the rightful recipient of my Medal of Honor which has been kept for the past fifteen months inside my closet-library. Minutes after such situation, I began opening some matters unto him until he suddenly asked me if I am the person who was completely worried unto the things that are happening wrongly unto me. I have told him that my only solution not to become worried is by keeping myself completely on-guard.
During that encounter too, he had numerous of insights shared unto me especially when it is about love life [or about having been involved in a relationship]. I told him, moreover, that I am thankful that he shared to me about the 6:14 Rule which I have found from a guidebook which I have bought during that day. During the course of the conversation, I do not know what was running into my mind until I am still reminded of what I have prayed for that day prior to the event. I was still harked back when I had to ask the Lord for a sign whom I should give my Medal of Honor ever since I became a college graduate. Above all, it was a very good time to meet him in person and to get to know him more.
INSPIRING MOMENT
During the entire course of the event, after the period of praise and worship, it marked with a moment of prayer. There were numerous testimonies which were shared from different speakers during that day. Their testimonies are mostly overcoming the crisis involving health matters, financial matters, and nationalistic matters. I believed that those messages I have learned are mostly having its common grounds that the Lord was too grateful that He helped them in resolving such matters even though it may take time to find the light at the end of their tunnels. Some of them would share on how their crises started but in the end God has been faithful to them that they are given a chance to still serve the Lord based on the field which they were called to. I remember Jimmy San Juan’s life story when he had to work overseas until he decided to return to the Philippines and started to serve the Lord in the music ministry.
Speaking nationalistic matters, one speaker has reminded me that the nation will change when its society changes day-to-day. It does not need to have a drastic time calling for drastic measure to take place as an evidence of its manifested changes. Change will not take place overnight for it undergoes a day-to-day process of transformation of ones mentality and attitude towards the numerous aspects which would have been changed and the person must be willing to change even though it is the primary requirement to influence the people around him. It is the only that change is evident when he also accepted the Lord’s entry unto his life in order for the world to see that the Lord is alive in him and He is not sleeping or He is idle but He works in ones life mysteriously. One must bear in his mind that everything happens for a reason for the Lord wants to grant it if He sees that we are ready to accept such task from Him or not.
OVER-ALL SUMMARY
From those things I have learned during the 64th Anniversary of 702 DzAS and FEBC Philippines, there are countless promises and lessons which the Lord has shown unto me through those things which happened. It also marked as another chance to have a glimpse on how the Lord is able to reach out unto me for the past six years after the incident which happened to me. I am always reminded with the things that transpired while my second life is kept unto my college friends because it would sound awkward unto them when I have told them about it but it basically be a great reminder that only a few persons are given another chance to live for the Lord wants them to continue the mission which has been bestowed to them in order to govern properly. Above all, I am completely thankful for that privilege and hope there would another chance for me to experience such. Based from their anniversary theme “With Christ: New Life, New Hope,” I have still seen God’s way of giving me another chance to have a living hope in Him in the midst of all circumstances arising daily. Prayer, therefore, is the only answer in order to resolve all dilemmas happening in our lives.
Thus, having an encounter with DJ Dave is also a different encounter by which I believe that it was an excellent manifestation from the Lord to whom I should give my Medal of Honor. Honestly, I did not expect to have an encounter with him because I told him that I should give my Medal of Honor to one of my former college professors but it turned out that he would receive it. With all honesty, I am really thankful to him because I have learned countless lessons and insights from him especially when it comes with some important and/or vitals matters like wise decision making and putting God first in all things as the day would start. I am also truly thankful for sharing about the 6:14 Rule which was followed-up through a series of podcast messages and through the book entitled Love struck. I could not even imagine that it would really happen until one of my friends in the Church told me that I must never dare spoil whatever the Lord has in-store in me on that day itself – my friend is right that’s why I really made the most out of it. Furthermore, he had a promise unto me that he would really take good care of my Medal of Honor since I have been keeping it in good quality while seeking for His answer to whom I must give it.

Clearly, the Word of God, delivered in one’s native tongue, strikes the heart with special power. It is the reason the work of Scripture translation is important. And it is also why the principle of heart language is at the center of our work at FEBC Philippines. Across the Philippines at least 170 languages are spoken. Our stations in Mindanao, for instance, carry programs in Cebuano, Hiligaynon…

Updates & Note of Thanks for 2016
2016 has been a whirlwind of a year. I felt a lot of things happened so fast leaving not only dramatic changes but deep challenges as well. Personally, it kicked-off with a bang as Shane and I moved heavens and earth to pursue the impossible dream wedding of ours -a private and intimate ceremony (but definitely artsy!) with the closest of family and friends. All in 14 days!
But we needed to pause the blissful moment and delay our honeymoon as the 2016 presidential election raged in full-swing. We felt the pressing call for active duty to serve the country. Yes, Heneral Luna and Ysabel did left such a deep mark on us!
Voter Education
Immediately after our wedding, the first half of the year saw me (and Shane too) moving from one voter education to the other. I served as guest analyst for FEBC's live radio coverages of the presidential debates, did a series of television segments for CBN Asia’s 700 Club featuring excerpts from my new book 'BOBOto Ba Ako? How to Think Smart and Vote Right,' and published several election articles (in PCEC's magazine 'Evangelicals Today' and in OMF Literature's book 'What About Philippine Politics'). Also, an article on 'BOBOto Ba Ako?' landed a pretty good feature at the lifestyle section of The Standard. Last year’s election really was fought and won in the realm of social media. One blog post of mine, wherein I compared the persona of the various presidential candidates with the characters of a popular Japanese anime, became a favorite among anime enthusiasts.
As I addressed a variety of audiences: students of University of the East in Caloocan, pastors of the MARVAL Ministerial Fellowship in Marikina, the networks of Phil. Bible Society (PBS), church workers of the IEMELIF, youth leaders of PCEC (NYC and YMEN), and even home-schooled kids –I witnessed how the electoral choices of Filipino voters have gone more complex and nuanced. Especially among the Christian community, gone are the days when apathy and indifference mark their feelings toward partisan politics.
The aftermath of which proved to be as heated as the campaign period. A post-election forum was called by the Phil. Council Evangelical Churches (PCEC) to help address the worrisome divisions and cracks in the Christian community wherein I found myself in the company of seasoned thinkers serving as resource persons for the event. Together with the help of a handful of friends at Pananaw Pinoy, we kept writing editorials aired at 702 DZAS and published by the grassroots daily People's Tonite. We tried our best to articulate perspectives that we feel would not only address the many controversial issues surrounding the new administration but also diffuse the polarizing discourse on it.
Youth Issues
But the world simply refused to stop with the win of Rodrigo Duterte as the new Philippine president. All throughout the year, pressing youth issues surfaced and I saw myself more and more drawn into articulating an emerging voice among the younger generation. Harris Memorial College invited me to address their student body and faculty on the issue of gender identity and homosexuality. I did a seminar on values and Filipino culture for the values education majors of Phil. Normal University (PNU). In September, I delivered a lecture on "Holiness in the Age of Social Media" at Faith Bible College.
In August, Greenhills Christian Fellowship (GCF) requested me to lead a dialogue with their growing community of young artists. In November, they gave me an opportunity to encourage young people to invest their lives in justice work. I handled the break-out session on "Jesus and Justice" for the One Gospel Conference which GCF organizes once every two years. Before 2016 closed, another opportunity opened up as I addressed the annual gathering of youth advocates from Phil. Children's Ministry Network (PCMN). The last two events filled my heart with joy as I met ‘rogue ones’ from the next generation with passion for advocacy work. Truly, life is not a race for one to win a prize, but a marathon for one to pass the baton. I see myself, more and more, serving as cheerleader for these brave souls.
Writing
This year, my personal blog 'Half-Meant' (www.xgenesisrei.tumblr.com) slowed down a bit as I devoted full attention into writing the early pages of my married life. But even as building a happy home has become my priority, I was able to launch an experimental micro-blog on public theology 'Every Square Inch' (https://www.facebook.com/EverySquareInchPh/). With it, I was hoping to encourage more of the younger generation to think biblically on pressing social issues and inspire them to do their share in shaping a more gracious voice in an already toxic atmosphere of today’s social media. 2016 saw debates on same-sex marriage, Marcos burial, morality of politicians, war on drugs, death penalty, and the likes pleading for a more respectful and sensible exchange of perspectives.
God has opened to me the world of writing. But I know deep in my heart that we need more materials written by Filipinos. More aspiring writers has to be encouraged and nurtured. This had me doing one writing workshops after another all throughout the year. I helped run workshops for the students of Faith Bible College and the young bloggers of FEBC's www.RightNow.Ph. I spoke at the writing bootcamps of the IEMELIF and the Taglish writers at OMF Lit. I handled a break-out session on writing for the web at the Philippine-Micronesia Nazarene Youth Congress in Benguet and delivered a talk for the Christian Writers Fellowship (CWF) on writing 'incarnationally.' Join me in praying that we would see more young people willing to take part in the ministry of the written word.
Integral Mission
2016 saw me taking a break from full-blown advocacy work at Micah Philippines. Still yet, there are some important occasions that really had me advocating the doing of Integral Mission. An Integral Mission Conference was organized by New Century Church in Laguna and they invited me to address the eager participants doing really wonderful works for the poor. The Center for Community Transformation (CCT) in the Visayas region invited me into a 3-day retreat to help their people reflect on a deeper understanding of transformational work. The National Youth Commission of the PCEC gathered its network of leaders for a day of upgrades for youth ministry. Integral Mission, which I dubbed as 'Ministry na Outside the Box,' served as one of the three tracks for the event.
A most amazing thing happened in August as I was chosen to be part of the Philippine delegation to the “Younger Leaders Gathering” (YLG) of the Lausanne Movement in Jakarta, Indonesia. Shane was understanding enough to let me be away for two weeks even though God has just "joined us together." The selection process was said to be thorough and I felt really humbled to even be nominated for a slot. And it was worth it. I can say that it was one of most incredibly designed event I've been to! The organizers made sure that there would be tremendous opportunities not only for emerging movers and influencers all over the world to connect with one another but also for senior leaders of Lausanne to sit down with us on a really personal level and share their wisdom on life and ministry. I met fellow advocates of Integral Mission working in different countries and in diverse kinds of situations. Just when I thought we were doing a lot already in the Philippines, being with them opened my eyes to the many new things God is doing in the world. My fellow Filipino delegates are looking forward to share the Lausanne experience with other younger leaders in our country. Help us pray for YLG Philippines soon!
What's next for 2017?
Our local church in Norzagaray, Bulacan (Norzagaray Christian Baptist Church) continues to provide a unique space to be rooted in a close-knit community that seeks to live-out the values of God’s kingdom. All these years, they have been very supportive (and understanding too) of the many advocacies that Shane and I are passionate about. We look forward to spend a bit more time walking closely with emerging leaders who are starting to ponder questions about career and ministry balance, quarter-life crisis, and yes settling down!
A dear ninong-bishop once told us that marriage puts an anchor to a person's life and soul to a person's work. Exchanging ‘I Dos’ has really been a most significant thing that happened to us. We learned to be wiser in how we steward the many good things that the Lord has entrusted to our care -time, talents, relationships, and opportunities. Hopefully, this new chapter in our life would add texture and mix more interesting shades of colors to the work that we do. We continue to seek the Lord’s leading as we also pray for directions He would like us to take as a family in the coming years.
We share to you this short note to express how much you have been part of this blessed journey of ours. In one way or another, you have touched our lives and we are so grateful that such grace from you has been with us ever since.
Blessings and happy new year!
Rei & Shane
P.S.
This year, I'm set to finish writing a book on the phenomenon of church-s/hopping. Please include it in your prayers that I would hear from the Lord clearly and to the best of my ability put into writing things that the next generation of Filipino Christians may need to reflect on a bit more seriously.
