#OneNETnewsInvestigates: PH Telco Giant 'Smart Communications' hits Luzon network blackout with no receiving texts and OTPs
Tumblr media
Originally published on September 21st, 2024 due to technical difficulties.
MAKATI, NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION -- A serious mobile service disruption took place last Wednesday night (September 18th, 2024), impacting all Smart Communications subscribers in the Luzon area. The outage started before 8pm (Manila local time) and caused a complete loss of mobile data, signal, SMS texts and one-time pins (OTPs) for e-wallets like GCash, Maya and Coins.PH. There were also indications of similar problems in Cebu and potential disruptions here in Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental.
Almost 3,500 users have reported experiencing service problems accessing 'Smart Communications' with 81% indicating experiencing complete service failure on the outage reporting website 'DownDetector'. The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), a government regulatory board issued a memorandum for this said telco giant explaining such disruptions and restoring the service for both prepaid and postpaid users.
Netizens are extremely annoyed because of the blackout that caused all of Luzon. On the other hand, some local residents in the Visayas and Mindanao are not as likely to worry about a nationwide telco blackout. The day after on Thursday (September 19th), Smart Communications also announced that the issues had already been fixed, and things were back to normal as before.
The company publicly apologized for the inconvenience caused by the lack of service resources and customer support during the blackout. OneNETnews has yet to reached out for a comment.

Okay but it was our communist government that pushed ethno-religious supremacy to legitimize the newly-emancipated nation the British Empire left behind, a legacy that was eagerly taken over by the neoliberal government. The Global South's communist governments all tore themselves apart just as well as the neoliberal ones because it turned out centralized power corrupts no matter the economics of it. It's extremely Eurocentric and reductive to blame all the world's ills on an economic system that the Europeans only got off the ground two hundred years ago. Ethno-religious supremacy, colonization and imperialism have been around for millennia.
I know some dickheads have now decided that Judaism is the "bad, violent, terrorist religion" and Islam is the "good, peaceful" one, which is only to be expected of white people, but how much of an issue is it currently? Like I've seen some USAmericans sharing how the Islamic faith shapes Gazans values and perseverance (good) except with that distinct white hippie "I'm about to imprint on this like the world's most racist duck" vibe (bad), but I didn't think they're already turning on Judaism in numbers.
Do they realize that Christianity is also the same kind of comfort to Christian minorities in Asia and Africa? That it was Buddhists that genocided the Rohingyas in Myanmar and Tamils in Sri Lanka? That Hindu fundamentalists are even now trying to ethnically cleanse Muslims in India? How Hindus and Christians are terrorized and persecuted in Pakistan? That Muslims have had a long history of persecuting and ethnically cleansing Jews too?
Really tired of asking y'all to be normal about people's religions man. There's no religion that's inherently violent or exceptionally peaceful. It's just like any other ideology that becomes a weapon in the hands of ethnic power. Interrogate power, not religion, and respect people's belief systems insofar as they aren't in your business.

My second day in Manila (Quezon City, actually), back in 2018, I asked the concierge in my building to call me a taxi. They smiled, said, "Yes, sir," and walked out to the street and started waving while I was like, "Wait, I can do that; I thought you were just gonna--"
And that is how I learned that in Manila, one does not simply pick up the phone and call a taxi.

FLASH REPORT: American YouTuber 'IShowSpeed' arrives in the Philippines, causes Fan Frenzy for meet-and-greet in BGC [#TeleRadyoSerbisyoEXCLUSIVE]
Tumblr media
(Written by Rhayniel Saldasal Calimpong / Freelanced News Writer, Online Media Reporter and News Presenter of OneNETnews)
TAGUIG, NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION -- The American variety and veteran YouTube sensation 'Mr. Darren Jason Watkins Jr.', finally set foot in the country today, part of his highly anticipated Southeast Asia tour. This arrival of the 19 y/o Ohio state native, straight from the United States of America (U.S.A.), created frenzy among his Filipino fanbase, which led to huge masses of crowds and traffic jams across Metro Manila.
Indeed, his Philippine adventure started off with a bang. He played at a local basketball court in 'Brgy. 39, Zone 3, District 1' in 'Tondo, Metro Manila, National Capital Region'. The place was thronged with fans as the eagerness got the better of everyone to get a glimpse of the male YouTube star. It set the tone for a day that became truly frenzy-filled and filled with fervor.
Before going to the heart of the city, IShowSpeed made a quick detour to a local Chowking branch on Bustos Street, Sta. Cruz, this said city and province. The fast-food stop served as an emergency impromptu meet-and-greet location, where he was sat and hydrate himself in plain cold water, as eager fans were gathered outside to catch a glimpse of their online male YouTuber idol. He followed up his interest in Filipino culture by riding on top of a Kalesa, a horse-drawn transportation contraption, waving a Philippine flag to the delight of all that watched, helping spur his growing entourage on in excitement.
The joyride to BGC turned out to be a spectacle in its own right, as the male YouTube star replaced Kalesa with a motorbike, knowingly called as 'habal-habal'. The ride through busy Manila attracted even more attention; traffic came to a halt with fans trying to stay alongside their idol.
The chaotic night concluded before 7:30pm at 5th Avenue, BGC, in a Mercedes-Benz showroom, where IShowSpeed found refuge amidst a sea of people. Outside the unforgettable local dealership at Cats Motors Incorporated (CMI), chaos was at nothing less than pandemonium. If this day wasn't exciting enough, IShowSpeed teasingly posted to the internet media, including 'TeleRadyo Serbisyo: Dumaguete' and 'OneNETnews' that he would be meeting the Boxing legend and former senator "Manny Dapidran 'PacMan' Pacquiao", scheduled for tomorrow on Thursday (September 12th, 2024 -- Manila local time) when social media would once again go ablaze in the star-studded encounter.
In LIVE chats throughout the night, rumors are rife that the IShowSpeed Philippine Tour may well extend to the Visayas region on Day 2, including Cebu, Bacolod, Dumaguete and Siquijor. For now, unfortunately much however, Mindanao appears to be out of its itinerary.
IShowSpeed's arrival most certainly has left an indelible mark within the Philippines, and his livestream drew in more than 300,000 viewers from around the world, over half from the Philippines with 56% online audience share in this video sharing platform. And as this male YouTube star still goes on a rampage in this South East Asian adventure, one thing is for sure: IShowSpeed fever has finally swept the nation of the Philippines, and it isn't going away anytime soon.
This ongoing tour to South East Asia would be continued across the continent, first stopping in Thailand and later adding probably with the likes of Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia -- all for this month of September 2024.

How to Calculate Dog Years to Human Years
Tumblr media
How to Calculate Dog Years to Human Years
Key Points
The widely held belief that "1 dog year = 7 human years" is unfounded.
Small dogs typically live longer than large dogs as they age, with various breeds aging differently.
A new formula is proposed in a 2019 research based on alterations to dogs' DNA over time.
Since the 1950s, it has been common practice to calculate a canine's age "in human years" using the formula 1 dog year = 7 human years. The truth is not as simple, despite the fact that this formula has been around for a remarkably long time. That doesn't deter many people from using this conventional calculation as their default. According to Kelly M. Cassidy, who collects research on canine longevity for the Charles R. Connor Museum at Washington State University, "you can't really kill the seven-year rule."
The 7:1 ratio appears to have been founded on the statistic that people lived to be about 70 and dogs lived to be about 10. This may be one explanation for how this formula came to be.
Veterinary student at Kansas State University William Fortney says, "My guess is it was a marketing ploy." According to him, it was "a way to educate the public on how quickly a dog ages compared to a human, primarily from a health standpoint," as reported by the Wall Street Journal. It served as a means of enticing pet owners to bring their animals in at least once a year.
How to Calculate Dog Years to Human Years?
However, the American Veterinary Medical Association provides the following breakdown as a general rule:
The first year of a medium-sized dog's existence is equivalent to 15 human years.
A dog's second year is roughly equivalent to a person's ninth year.
After that, a canine would live for about five years for every human year.
How Do Researchers Come Up With Those Numbers?
The AVMA states: "Cats and small dogs are usually considered'senior' at seven years old, but we all know they've got plenty of life left in them at that age. There are many various factors to consider. When compared to smaller breeds, larger canines tend to live shorter lives and are frequently regarded as seniors at 5 to 6 years old. Pets age more quickly than humans do, and because of this, veterinarians start to notice more age-related issues in senior pets. Dogs do not age at a pace of 7 human years for every year in dog years, despite what the general public believes.
The Great Dane is one instance. According to the Great Dane Club of America, the typical lifespan is between 7 and 10 years. A 4-year-old Great Dane would therefore be 35 years old in human years. Remember once more that these are merely approximations.
Dog data is not kept by the National Center for Health Statistics. Instead, breed clubs, pet insurance companies, and veterinary hospitals are the primary sources of information on their longevity.
Why Do Smaller Dogs Live Longer than Larger Dogs?
The connection between body mass and a dog's lifespan has perplexed scientists for years, and research has yet to provide an explanation.
Large animals, such as elephants and whales, typically live longer than small mammals, such as mice. So why do small canine breeds typically live longer than big breeds?
According to researcher Cornelia Kraus, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Göttingen in Germany, large dogs age more quickly and "their lives seem to unwind in fast motion." A dog's life expectancy decreased by about a month for every 4.4 pounds of bodily mass, according to researchers. Kraus suggests several explanations for this phenomenon, including the possibility that larger dogs may experience age-related illnesses more quickly and that their rapid growth may increase their risk of developing cancer and dying from abnormal cell development. Future research is being planned to clarify the relationship between development and mortality.
Tumblr media
Canine gerontology is a growing area of study because dog owners want to increase the quantity and quality of their time spent with their pets. In order to "delay aging and promote healthy longevity," the Dog Aging Project is researching the aging process in dogs.
Every stage of our dogs' development, whether defined in human or dog years, is beautiful and endearing. Senior dogs are particularly endearing and poignant with their gray muzzles and thoughtful expressions.
2019 Epigenetic Clock Study
A new technique for estimating dog age was proposed in a 2019 study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego, based on alterations made to human and canine DNA over time. As DNA molecules age in both species, methyl groups are added, changing DNA function without changing the DNA itself. As a consequence, scientists have employed DNA methylation as a "epigenetic clock" to study human aging.
To compare the epigenetic clocks of dogs and humans, the research team conducted targeted DNA sequencing on 104 Labrador Retrievers with an age range of 16 years. The findings enabled them to derive a formula for converting dog ages to "human years," which they then used to calculate human age: human_age = 16ln(dog_age) + 31. You can use this natural logarithm tool.
Since only one breed was used in the research, the "human age" calculated for your dog using this formula might not be exactly accurate. Given that various breeds age differently, it's possible that the UCSD formula doesn't have enough variables to produce definitive results. Regardless, the newly proposed formula, which is supported by science, is unquestionably more helpful for determining a dog's "human age" than the long-debunked "multiply by 7" fallacy.
