I thought I would take this opportunity to have a lesson on at least one plant you should have on the homestead at all times. We all know homesteads seem to be a magnet for injuries, add in some clumsy people (me...) and some wild feralesque children (my boys), and you're bound for chaos once in a while... Today there was an incident, oddly enough NOT involving the boys but one of the barn cats. One of windows is broke so I have it taped and cardboarded up until I can get it fixed... Well one of the barn cats decided he wanted in the house......Right that second......Busted through my tape and cardboard to get inside, and in doing so sliced his tail and started slinging blood everywhere... DON'T worry, he's fine.... Now I have my boys trained fairly well in some things and one is what to get when blood is involved. My youngest, almost 8, ran and got the yarrow. We use yarrow for a lot of things, but I have a jar of powdered yarrow. Yarrow in our house is most commonly used as a styptic powder which means it stops bleeding, quickly too. So anyway, we caught Buddy ( mr break in kitty's name), got the powder on his wound, loved on him until it stopped and we made sure it did. It wasn't deep enough to need stitched or gluing so there's that at least. I'm hoping next time he wants in he comes to the door like every other animal who wants to come in I could go into a whole lecture about the other uses of this plant among dozens and dozen of others as well but since this was todays adventure in homesteading, I thought I would share.
