Feedback sandwich, s**t sandwich or s**t feedback?
Inferno Lynda’s tour around London I’ve been *doing* feedback for decades. I didn’t always get it right in the early days. But I’m kind, considerate and constructive. What I’ve learned: 1. If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. 2. Read it back – how does it sound? Will it be perceived and received in the way you intended it? Read and delete. If it’s verbal feedback perhaps…

Understanding the OET Writing Criteria: A Comprehensive Guide
The Occupational English Test (OET) is a specialized English language test for healthcare professionals. It’s designed to assess the language proficiency of individuals who seek to work in an English-speaking healthcare environment. One of the key components of the OET is the writing sub-test, which evaluates your ability to produce clear and effective written communication in a healthcare context. Understanding the OET writing criteria is essential for success, and in this guide, we’ll break down what you need to know.
What is the OET Writing Sub-Test?
The OET writing sub-test requires candidates to write a letter based on a set of case notes provided. This letter is typically addressed to a healthcare professional, such as a doctor or a specialist, and it could take various forms, including referral letters, discharge summaries, or transfer letters. Your goal is to convey relevant information clearly and professionally.
The OET Writing Criteria
The OET writing assessment is based on several key criteria, each of which contributes to your overall score. Here’s a closer look at these criteria:
Purpose of the Letter:
Clarity: You need to clearly define the purpose of your letter. Are you referring a patient for further treatment? Providing a summary for a colleague? Your purpose should be evident from the start, guiding the reader through the information you present.
Relevance: Ensure that all the information you include is pertinent to the purpose. Avoid unnecessary details that could distract from the main message.
Content:
Completeness: The content of your letter must be comprehensive, covering all the important aspects of the patient’s case as outlined in the case notes. This includes medical history, current condition, and any relevant treatments.
Accuracy: Ensure that you accurately represent the information from the case notes. Misinterpretations can lead to confusion and affect patient care.
Organization and Structure:
Logical Flow: Your letter should follow a clear structure with an introduction, body, and conclusion. Start with a brief introduction that states the purpose, followed by the main body where you provide details, and end with a concise conclusion.
Paragraphing: Use paragraphs effectively to organize your thoughts. Each paragraph should focus on a specific aspect of the case, making it easier for the reader to follow.
Language:
Clarity and Precision: Use clear and precise language. Avoid overly complex sentences that might confuse the reader. Instead, aim for straightforward language that conveys your message effectively.
Appropriateness: Your tone and vocabulary should be suitable for a professional healthcare setting. This means using formal language, medical terminology where appropriate, and maintaining a respectful tone throughout.
Grammar and Mechanics:
Spelling and Punctuation: Errors in spelling and punctuation can distract the reader and undermine your professionalism. Always proofread your letter to catch any mistakes.
Sentence Structure: Vary your sentence structures to maintain the reader’s interest, but ensure that your sentences are grammatically correct and easy to read.
Tips for Excelling in the OET Writing Sub-Test
Practice Regularly: Familiarize yourself with the types of letters you might be asked to write. Practice writing letters based on sample case notes, paying attention to the criteria outlined above.
Seek Feedback: If possible, get feedback from peers or mentors who are familiar with the OET. Constructive criticism can help you identify areas for improvement.
Time Management: The writing sub-test is time-limited, so practice writing within the allotted time. This will help you become more efficient and confident during the actual test.
Review Case Notes Carefully: Take time to understand the case notes thoroughly before you start writing. Identify key points that need to be included and think about how they relate to the purpose of your letter.
Stay Calm: During the test, take a deep breath and focus. Remember that you can always outline your letter before you start writing, helping you stay organized.
Conclusion
The OET writing criteria are designed to ensure that healthcare professionals can communicate effectively in written form. By understanding these criteria and practicing regularly, you can improve your chances of success in the OET writing sub-test. Remember to keep your writing clear, organized, and professional, and you’ll be well on your way to achieving your desired score. Good luck!

So the entire time I'm in this life coaching course so far, I'm thinking "I can do this better and not use pseudo-science bullshit to help clients". But can I? Should I? I'm thinking a lot about how I'd want to structure it, what I'd want to do, how I'd want to engage with scientific data to make sure it's accurate but also continuously engaging with knowledge, showing it's okay to misunderstand as long as you learn and do better, to show I'm not an expert no one's an expert in anything, and it's just that I have the context that maybe others don't. But would it be helpful? Would I be helpful?
But then there's the marketing, the business owning, the money it takes to start a business that's really overwhelming and not something I have. Would it be worth trying to sift through that and push through? Would I have help and support?
I genuinely don't know.

Understanding the OET Writing Criteria: A Comprehensive Guide
The Occupational English Test (OET) is a crucial examination for healthcare professionals seeking to work in English-speaking environments. Among its various components, the writing section plays a significant role in assessing your ability to communicate effectively in a professional context. Understanding the OET writing criteria is essential for success, and this guide will help you navigate the intricacies of this important component.
What is the OET?
The OET is designed specifically for healthcare professionals, including nurses, doctors, and pharmacists, to ensure they possess the necessary English language skills for effective communication in a medical setting. The test comprises four sub-tests: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, with the writing section being particularly focused on assessing your ability to produce a clear, professional document.
The OET Writing Task
In the writing section, candidates are required to write a letter based on a given case study. This letter is usually a referral, discharge, or transfer letter that simulates real-life communication scenarios you might encounter in your professional career. The task assesses not only your writing skills but also your ability to convey relevant information succinctly and accurately.
The OET Writing Criteria
The OET writing criteria are broken down into several key areas, each contributing to the overall effectiveness of your letter. Familiarizing yourself with these criteria is vital for scoring well in the writing task.
1. Purpose and Clarity
The primary goal of your letter should be clear from the outset. The purpose of the communication must be easily identifiable. Are you referring a patient to a specialist? Providing a discharge summary? Ensure that your letter addresses the recipient appropriately and that your intent is straightforward. Clear headings and a logical structure can significantly enhance the clarity of your message.
2. Content Relevance
Each piece of information included in your letter must be relevant to the purpose. This means including necessary details about the patient’s medical history, current condition, and any relevant background information. Avoid extraneous details that may detract from the primary message. Your ability to filter important information demonstrates your understanding of professional communication in healthcare settings.
3. Organization and Structure
A well-structured letter enhances readability and comprehension. Typically, the letter should include:
Introduction: Briefly introduce the patient and the purpose of the letter.
Body: Present relevant medical information, organized logically (e.g., past medical history, current condition, and treatment).
Conclusion: Summarize key points and outline any requests or next steps.
Using clear paragraphs and headings helps guide the reader through your letter, making it easier to follow.
4. Language and Tone
The language you use should be appropriate for a professional healthcare setting. This means employing formal language, avoiding slang, and using medical terminology accurately. Additionally, maintain a respectful and professional tone throughout the letter. Consider the recipient’s position and adjust your language accordingly to ensure effective communication.
5. Grammar and Mechanics
Accuracy in grammar, punctuation, and spelling is essential. Errors in these areas can lead to misunderstandings and detract from the professionalism of your letter. Practice writing and proofreading your work to ensure it is free from mistakes. Remember, the OET is not just about what you say, but how you say it.
Tips for Success
Practice Regularly: Familiarize yourself with the types of letters you may need to write. Regular practice will help you become more comfortable with the format and requirements.
Review Sample Letters: Analyze high-scoring sample letters to understand how they meet the OET writing criteria. Pay attention to structure, content, and language use.
Seek Feedback: If possible, have a mentor or colleague review your writing. Constructive criticism can provide valuable insights into areas for improvement.
Time Management: During the exam, keep an eye on the clock to ensure you have ample time to plan, write, and revise your letter.
Conclusion
Understanding the OET writing criteria is crucial for success in the writing section of the exam. By focusing on purpose, relevance, organization, language, and grammar, you can craft a professional letter that meets the expectations of the assessors. With practice and dedication, you can enhance your writing skills and increase your chances of achieving a high score on the OET. Good luck on your journey to a successful healthcare career in an English-speaking environment!
