Five Years On: Changing the conversation on mental health

A report from the Heads Together Charity Partners (x)

Key points:

53% of British adults are now talking about their mental health, which has increased from 42% in April 2017

Over half of adults (54%) in Britain believe mental health stigma has reduced over the past five years

The proportion of British adults who report performing an activity to look after their mental health went up from 31% to 38%

Millions more people are now talking about their mental health – 11% of the UK adult population

More people are seeking help for their mental health, including through conversations, with the largest gains seen in men and people in lower socio-economic groups

More young people than ever are reaching out for support with their mental health, many of them acutely unwell

Almost half of the UK adult population are still unlikely to have a conversation about mental health

There is still a lot of work to be done and more action is needed to help prevent a deepening of the mental health crisis facing our country.

I came across a couple articles on this this morning, but this one gives the fullest picture. Quoting the relevant bits:

‘Speaking to the World Economic Forum at Davis he said: “What was very interesting when we set up the campaign was that not one celebrity wanted to join us, not one person wanted to be involved in the mental health campaign Heads Together when he, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry were recruiting support for their flagship campaign three years ago.

“We reached out to a lot of people and no one, when we started, was interested in being part of Heads Together, because it was mental health.”

The initiative began breaking into the public consciousness in 2017, the year it was designated lead charity for the London Marathon and in which Prince Harry revealed he had sought counselling for mental health problems.

“Obviously once we started getting the ball rolling, once we started showing people a lot more what we were going to do, people realised Katherine Harry and I had actually put our necks on the line here, that actually it was ok,” he said.

“Then some very brave people came forward, from celebrities and normal people who decided this was really important. They bravely took on the talk of speaking out about mental health.”’

My understanding is that Dan was involved with Stop Speak Support and that Heads Together is another charity run by the Royal Foundation, but the event at the school last year was put on by both. Neither of which are to be confused with YoungMinds, but correct me if I’m wrong.

I would like to reiterate, Catherine was the one who pointed it out that Mental Health is the center of most —if not all— adult problems, may it be addiction, work related problems, and the highly increasing suicide cases. With the launching of #HeadsTogether campaign, UK's number of suicide cases relatively decreased since then.
