Im listening to the 200th episode of The Headgum Podcast, which I haven’t listened to in a while (sorry Geoff). Its normally a nonsensical show (in a good way of course) constantly escalating in the bullshit the host can get out but for this episode there are 23 guests, TWENTY THREE. I’ve been smiling and laughing the whole time it is so fucking stupid, even if youve never listened to this podcast you should give it a listen, everyone should listen to this podcast episode with a total of 24 people on it.

I want my favorite things to be popular. A normal desire, right?
Problem is, my favorite things aren't normal. Obscure fanfictions, fucked-up furry porn, hyper-controversial artists, etc.
But at least with most of them I can cobble together something like a pitch. I can say, "I liked it, and here's why!" I can play devil's advocate, I can get ahead of complaints, I can do a lot!
I can't do it for the Headgum Podcast.
It's bad. It's a bad show. That's the appeal. It's so bad it's good I guess, but it's also sort of boring sometimes, which is usually the thing that turns so "bad it's good" into just "bad".
But I've listened to every episode. I get excited when a new one drops.
The barrier to entry is high. Most of the episodes are on YouTube, but not all of them. The first 69 (nice) I had to listen to through the Headgum website.
And you know, it's not even so bad at first. It's not good, it's not interesting, so you have every reason to bounce right off- but it's also not even upfront about what it will become.
And what it becomes is audio poison. Are the rice songs funny? Sort of, I guess! Do you want to listen to almost a full fucking HOUR of them? Probably not. But that's how much there is. And it's always the highlight of the episode.
One of the longest running segments is "Bond of the week", where they pitch ideas for who should play James Bond in the next movie. It wasn't interesting the first time they did it, and it's certainly not the 200th. But they keep doing it. I have never watched a James Bond movie.
One of the regular guests is Marika Brownlee. She speaks in a dull monotone 90% of the time. No passion. Dead inside. Still one of the best people on the show, because everyone else is usually worse. It's upsetting when she's not on.
If you scroll down to the comments, it's mostly insults, and gibberish. Everyone basically speaks in what is, essentially, a conlang, comprised of mostly references to an actually different fucking show. If you didn't grow up watching Jake and Amir, it's nigh-impenetrable... but if you can grok it, it will INFECT your vocabulary and speech patterns. You will find yourself saying things like "My Other Car is a Massage", and other such bizarre non-sequiturs. What does it mean? Nothing.

So Dropout, Try Guys, Smosh and Mythical have been hornily inbreeding for the past two years. Cross-pollinating like citruses. They are all in each other’s business (literally), especially Miles, Angela, Vic, and Josh.
Do we think that Smosh and Mythical are going to start hosting live or exclusive shows on Dropout or 2ndTry? 2nd Try is still building out their own content library, but Dropout has started hosting other entertainers’ productions with Dropout Presents. And after watching Without A Recipe Live tonight, I can confidently say that 2nd Try hosts live events MUCH BETTER than Smosh has managed in the past (at least in their own studio, I didn’t see SmoshMouth at Dynasty Typewriter).
I think that, if they can work out the revenue sharing in a way that benefits all parties, it would be a way for Smosh and Mythical to do more raunchy content without worrying about ad support OR long-term VOD hosting issues. It would build out Dropout and 2nd Try as legitimate Entertainment Networks, and Smosh and Mythical would still be able to do all of their normal programming on their own channels.
Based on how much they all work together, I don’t think it’s beyond the realm of possibility that Dropout starts hosting more filmed one-off events for various entertainment groups, and 2nd Try starts producing paywalled cooking shows and live-streamed events FOR the other channels. All four channels obviously have their own cooking shows and life events, but re-specializing so that each team has their own niche and vibe might make it easier to 1) sell the set to investors and 2) get people who can be The Best at ONE thing.
Hell, even Headgum (which hosts Miles’s podcast Perfect Person) was created by two College Humor members. There exists here the makings of a grassroots powerhouse media conglomerate (positive).
#try guys#dropout#Smosh#mythical#2nd try#dropout.tv#college humor#mythical kitchen#rhett and link#sam reich#miles bonsignore#angela giarratana#vic michaelis#josh scherer#my guess is at least one ACTUAL COLLAB announced by May 2025#not just like Jordan hosting Gastronauts or Vic appearing in everything

watching d20 as someone who doesn’t live in the US… can someone explain entertainment jobs (?) to me 😭 what do you mean crown of candy was filmed into the night after the cast’s full time jobs as writers. a bunch of the cast have their own podcasts both under other companies (headgum?) but also have their own patreons for it? a lot of them are in writers rooms so they both write and perform? sorry if this is weird to ask but are they paid per appearance? or do they draw a regular paycheck…?

So I am a NADDPOD girlie (Brian Murphy #1 DM), and also a huge fan of Why Won’t You Date Me with Nicole Byer, both of which are (or were? Not sure for WWYDM) headgum podcasts. Jake even guested on WWYDM with Amir. So I have had it in my brain that I would love to see Nicole on NADDPOD, and that it could theoretically happen due to proximity.
Come to find out today, because I happened to watch the Sibling Rivalry episode with him, that Brennan Lee Mulligan knows Nicole Byer? And DMed for her once??? So Nicole Byer on D20 is also and actually potentially more achievable???!?
Nicole Byer if you’re listening PLEASE will you do some sort of dnd actual play, I am begging, I must see it!
