I think Merlin knew all along that, if he had told Arthur that Gwen was possessed, and that she had been the culprit to his assassination, with all the proofs Merlin had on his side too, because let’s be honest, he had them, Arthur would have believed him.

But that was the problem.

If Merlin didn’t tell Arthur before that Gwen was not herself is exactly because he knew Arthur would have believed in him in a second, and he didn’t want that (on a side note, it’s wild that Merlin knew the power he held over Arthur. He could tell him, he did tell him, to do anything he wished, and even after doubting it, Arthur always did as Merlin said/asked/pleaded).

Merlin already had on his conscience the fact that he had been lying to Arthur for years, and after Morgana, Agravaine, Uther’s betrayal, (and even Gwen and Lancelot’s), Merlin didn’t want Arthur to lose even more trust in his friends and family, and in his wife, of all people, a woman he deeply loved.

So Merlin tried to find a solution on his own, trying to figure out if there was a way to disenchant Gwen before he had to tell Arthur, hoping that he didn’t have to tell him anything at all.

And we can see how easy it was then for Arthur to believe Merlin. He just followed him to the woods, and saw with his own eyes that Gwen had betrayed him. Arthur didn’t even wait for Merlin’s explanation.

He drew his sword, because he was blinded with distrust, other than with disappointment in both Morgana’s actions and Gwen’s.

Most importantly, he was tired. “Yet it keeps happening to me.”

But Arthur also trusted Merlin so blindly, he still had him, unlike most people he had known and respected in his life, that he was ready to tear down the last hope he had of trusting those he loved, damn the consequences.

And that’s why the magic reveal hurt Arthur the most.

He found out that someone else he loved the most had lied to him.

His best friend, Merlin had lied to him, and that was simply impossible.

But it happened, and Arthur couldn’t believe it.
