This one is heartbreaking. She's doing everything in her power to drive them away, but the Strawhats still believe in her. I've never quite understood the second pupil thing she's got going on here and in other panels, but her expression and eye(s) are drawn so well here, it's so clear she's on the verge of tears.

This is our first full look at little Robin. Like most cartoon characters, she hasn't changed all that much in appearance from childhood, but we can see several things about her from this shot alone. For one thing, she hasn't once smiled yet. We can see from the book that she's been interested in archaeology and history from a young age. She's also had her Devil Fruit for a long time, considering how well she controls it and that the other kids address her as "the monster." She's not wearing fancy clothes, so we know she either doesn't come from money or her guardians don't spend theirs on her. And judging by her lack of tears, this isn't the first time she's been attacked and wounded unprompted.

This is the first time we see little Robin smiling! Although it was easy to guess, the fact that she passed a doctoral exam at eight years old also confirms her high intelligence from a very young age.

Oh hey, another heartbreaking panel! She didn't even want to study the Void Century in the first place, necessarily - she picked it up because the scholars were the closest thing to friends she had, and she just wanted to be closer to them and join them in everything they did. She had no idea of the weight studying the Void Century carried.

As we all know, laughter is a big theme in One Piece in various ways. Here, Robin's world is close to crumbling around her, but she's not yet aware of it and she's spending her time learning to laugh and be happy.

We finally learn the reason she wanted to study archaeology: She knows her mother is an archaeologist and left her behind for her studies, and she thinks that if she becomes an archaeologist, her mother will take her with her when she returns. All she wants deep down is family and friends.

Chapter 396

(pretending i'm not crying as i type) Robin's world is finally collapsing around her, but she could care less. She finally has her mother back, and even though her desire was just to hold her hand, her mother finally acknowledges her and hugs her. As I said in the original post, this is probably her first hug since her mother left; there's no way her aunt and uncle hugged her, and I doubt the scholars ever gave her any more physical affection than an occasional pat on the head. We can see from her body language in this panel that the hug is completely unexpected - one arm is squished against her, the other thrown back, and her legs have collapsed as she's dragged into the embrace.

Up to this point, Robin has been effectively suicidal. She knows the island is burning to the ground around her and the Marines are shooting everyone in sight, but she's tried again and again to stay with the people who love her as they stay behind to salvage their life's work, because all she wanted was love, and there was no love for her on the evacuation ship. The sole reason she set out to sea was because Saul promised that she would find new people who loved her. After twenty years, she was ready to die all over again once Crocodile was finished with her, but she finally found new hope with the Strawhats, who didn't care about her past and loved her for who she was.

Chapter 397

She's trying so hard to be happy, just like Saul wished for her, and using what he taught her to cheer herself up. But as she quickly learns, laughter alone can't make a person happy.

Another iconic panel. Finally, finally, she wants to live. She's been living purely for others up until now - for her mother, Clover, and Saul, who all begged her to escape the island and survive. But now, she wants to live, not just survive. She finally has friends who love her and would never betray her, and she can put her faith in them to save her and take her back.

Chapter 419

As the enemy explodes around her, her tears of despair and frustration turn into tears of relief as she realizes the Strawhats are okay and still well on their way to helping her.

Even though the Seastone cuffs physically weakened her, finally being free exhausts her emotionally enough for her to collapse. I like that she trusts Franky enough to fall into him, even though he hasn't joined the crew yet.

I like this one because not only is it a good picture of her in general, but the way it's framed with the action lines behind her makes it look like some kind of motivational poster, except she's advocating for grand larceny instead of like, self-care.

This is a great example of that; instead of staying behind and avoiding the island where someone is obviously setting a trap for them, she's all ready to head out and explore.

My #1 post of 2022

The little details in Bullet Train (2022) I only noticed/payed attention to upon a rewatch that I absolutely adore:

Spoilers below

- the train cars are visibly numbered (the one Lemon and Tangerine are in has the same number as the one The Prince is in at the beginning - 3)

- the only time Tangerine is truly happy on screen is during the “counting to 17″ flashback

- Lemon visibly putting the Diesel sticker on Prince and it being there in all the following shots until it’s discovered

- Tangerine stealing the biscuits, two separate plushies on two separate occasions, a gun ... I’m pretty sure he nicked the Momonga glasses too (yet he’s the one to pay for the water)

- when The Wolf first sees Ladybug on the train, he immediately looks down onto the wine stain on his jacket

- Ladybug’s fake British accent as he opens the fake briefcase

- “Why don’t you tell them the story about how Gordon met Percy, and now Percy’s bleeding out of his eye-sockets.” not being random Thomas characters, but actually the ones that Lemon assigned Tangerine and The Son at the beginning

- Lemon calling Tangerine “the strongest and most important”

- Tangerine’s genuine concern when he finds Lemon unconscious at their table

Is adultery/fornication a sin in Christianity and Judaism? It is shown as if it is not a sin in the films that we watch. Is adultery/fornication regarded a sin in all religions?

Fornication is sexual intercourse out of wedlock.

The lexical meaning of fornication as “illegitimate sexual relationship” is not essentially different from its meaning in religious terminology.

However, definitions of fornication that are rather different from one another are seen due to the usage of this concept in literal or figurative meaning, holistic or technical outlook from the viewpoint of only penal law, efforts of including the elements of the crime in the definitions, including the deeds that lead to fornication in the scope of fornication or the usage of rather inexplicit expressions acting upon the fact that it is a concept known by everybody.

Fornication, which is regarded as a major sin and crime by the other heavenly religions and by the shared culture of humanity, is also rendered haram and regarded as a major sin by Islam; Islam also imposed some worldly-penal sanctions for those who commit this crime.

The word fornication is mentioned in five places in the Quran:

- In one of them (al-Isra, 17/32), it is stated that one should not approach fornication and that it is a shameful deed and an evil, opening the road to other evils.

- In two of them (al-Furqan, 25/68; al-Mumtahina, 60/12), fornication is mentioned among major sins like polytheism and murder.

In the other two verses (an-Nur, 24/2-3), the woman and the man guilty of fornication are ordered to be flogged with a hundred stripes and it is emphasized that a person who commits fornication can marry only a person who commits fornication or a polytheist.

The word fahsha (plural fawahish) meaning “open obscenity” mentioned in the Quran is defined as the deeds that can be committed only by the people that follow Satan and that are condemned and forbidden clearly; it is used in the sense of fornication in several verses (an-Nisa, 4/15, 25; al-An‘am, 6/151; al-Ahzab, 33/30) or in a way that expresses fornication primarily. (al-Baqara, 2/169; an-Nahl, 16/90; an-Nur, 24/21; an-Naml, 27/54)

The decrees about qazf (accusation of fornication) and preserving good manners, modesty, honor and chastity in the Quran express from different viewpoints that fornication is among major sins.

There are a lot of hadith narrations stating that fornication is a major sin and a big crime and showing the practices of the Prophet (pbuh) regarding the issue.

Fornication in other religions

In all religions, from the most primitive one to the most advanced one, the definition of the concept fornication consists of similar elements. All of the intercourses carried out secretly apart from the ones approved by the community or accepted officially and attempts like rape have always been regarded as a crime and sin.

Although it is not seen very much in primitive communities, all kinds of illegitimate intercourses that caused the taboos to be violated were punished. This punishment took place in the form of both the legal norms of the community and religious beliefs.

Those who committed the crime of fornication were killed legally, excommunicated or some temporary signs were made on their bodies. For instance:

In the Wydot tribe of the North American Indians, the hair of the woman who committed fornication was cut very short or her left ear was torn off.

In the Bushmen of Africa, visible places of the bodies of the men and women who committed fornication were cauterized.

The result of the religious sanctions was to be damned by supernatural powers. It is regarded that this damnation caused diseases in the fornicators, impoverish them or killed them.

The first data reached about fornication are seen in the cuneiform scripts of Mesopotamia. There are various decrees about fornication in the legal code of Ur Nammu and Eshnunna belonging to Sumerians and Hammurabi belonging to Babylonians.

If both parties condemned for the crime of fornication were married, they would be killed. They would be drowned in water, impaled or thrown from a high place.

If the man claimed and proved that he did not know that the woman was married, he could get away with a slight punishment. Rape was also regarded as fornication.

The intercourse of the people who were not married was punished slightly.

Along with worldly penalties, they would inevitably be damned by gods.

In Roman law, the penalties for the crime of fornication underwent various phases from the early times to late times.

The deed of fornication mentioned as “adulterium” in Roman legal texts was punished by deprivation of certain rights.

When Konstantin accepted Christianity, the penalty for fornication was determined as death.

According to Zoroastrian texts, fornication is the biggest sin that hurt Ahura Mazda (Vendidad, 18:61-62) and it causes the generation to be spoiled. (Dadistani Dinik, 77)

Man should keep away from committing fornication with another person’s spouse, seducing him/her and causing his/her spouse to leave the bed. (Sad Dar, 305, 324)

In Zoroastrianism, fornication is regarded as a disgusting and mean crime and it is stated that this was committed for the first time by Zahak, the symbol of despotism in Persian mythology; the bad results originating from fornication are listed and people are asked to avoid them. (Dadistani Dinik, 71, 77)

According to the religious texts of this religion, a woman who commits fornication will be hanged from her chest in Hell and the man will be eaten by snakes. (Arda Viraf, 171, 188, 191, 194-195, 197)

Buddhism generally views sexuality negatively and it encourages singleness because sexuality prevents one from getting rid of “samsara” circle.

In Buddhism, the third one of the Five Commandments, which are basic ethical norms, is related to sexual ethics and it includes the issues like prostitution, incest relationship, rape and masturbation along with fornication. If man does not obey this commandment, he falls down spiritually.

In Buddhism, fornication is limited to adultery, that is, intercourse with a married woman; an intercourse with a single girl is not regarded as crime of fornication. (Anguttara Nikaya, I, 189; Sutta Nipata, 396)

No penalty for women is mentioned in fornication in the religious decrees of this religion; there are penalties for men and they can be executed in various ways. Fornication is regarded as a sin toward both the state and the honor of the family; therefore, the criminal was given penalties from imprisonment to death.

In Hinduism, the absolute loyalty of a woman to her husband is emphasized; fornication is dealt with in this context.

In this religion, fornication (samgrahana) is limited to sexual relationship with a married woman; to give a give a gift to a married woman, to touch her dress or embellishments and to sit on her bed are also regarded as fornication. (The Laws of Manu, 8:357-358)

Since fornication can harm Hindu family structure and spoil the cast system (Bhagavad Gita, 1:41-43; The Laws of Manu, 8:353), it is dealt with in a detailed way in the resources of this religion.

Accordingly, the days of a person who commits fornication will shorten, he will go to Hell after death and a person who is thinking of having a sexual intercourse with the wife of somebody else will be born as a reptile in the future. (Vishnu Purana, 3:11)

In Hinduism, the cast to which the parties belong has an important place in the determination of the crime

Various sanctions and penalties were applied for this crime like paying a fine, beating with an iron rod, cutting two fingers off and placing on a donkey to ride, imprisonment, confiscation, cutting of the genital organ, burning, shaving his hair and being savaged by animals (The Laws of Manu, 8:364-385).

In the former Turks, fornication was a rather severe crime. The parties that were proved to have committed fornication were tied to two animals (generally cows, buffalos and horses); when the animals were drawn to different directions, the body of the fornicator would be torn apart.

In Kutluk Turks, the fornicators were burnt.

In Judaism, fornication, which is given Hebrew names like “niuf, zenut”, is one of the biggest crimes.

In the early periods, the concept fornication were generally related to the concept of the woman belonging to the man. Since the woman was the private property of the husband, fornication meant trespassing one’s property. (Exodus, 20/13; Deuteronomy, 5/17)

Along with this legal understanding, a fornicator was regarded as impure in terms of religion. (Leviticus, 18/20)

After the exodus, fornication, which assumed a more theological meaning, was regarded as a crime against God (Genesis, 20/6; 39/8-9) and as paganism. (Joshua, 1-3; Jeremiah, 3)

That fornication is forbidden in the Ten Commandments (Exodus, 20/13; Deuteronomy, 5/18) is probably the product of the same period.

The Jews who committed fornication were stoned to death. (Deuteronomy, 22/24)

There are also references that they were burnt (Deuteronomy, 38/24) and left on the street naked. (Joshua, 2/5)

It is stated in the Torah that if somebody committed fornication with an engaged girl, he would be stoned (Deuteronomy, 22/13, 20-21, 23-25) and if he committed fornication with a married woman, he would be killed. (Leviticus, 20/10; Deuteronomy, 22/22)

Rabbinic tradition demands that a married woman who committed fornication and who was an oracle’s daughter, she be punished by being burned. (Leviticus, 21/9; Sanhedrin, XV/13; the Code of Maimonides, “Holiness: Forbidden Intercourse”, 1/6)

In Christianity, fornication was taken from the shari’ah of Judaism and continued in terms of concept and decree (Mark, 10/19; Luke, 18/20; Acts, 15/19-20), but the scope of this concept was expanded by Hz. Isa (Jesus):

- man’s looking at a woman lustfully is regarded as fornication in his heart (Matthew, 5/27-28).

- Marrying after divorce is regarded as fornication for both parties (Matthew, 19/9; Mark, 10/11-12; Luke, 16/18).

- Fornication and similar sexual crimes are reviled as a whole (Matthew, 15/19; Mark, 7/21; Galatians, 5/21).

When the advice “Avoid the lusts of the body in the struggle against the soul” (I Peter’s Letter 2/11) is taken into consideration, it can be said that the concept fornication is used in the sense of “all mental or physical lustful phenomena and immoral things”.

There is no penalty determined for fornication in the Gospel but it is stated

- that those who commit fornication will be judged (Hebrews, 13/4),

- and that people like that will not inherit the kingdom of God (I Corinthians, 6/9-10).

According to what is understood from sacred texts, Hz. Isa did not apply the penalty of stoning on a woman who was caught fornicating (John, 8/3-11) but he emphasized that fornication was the only reason for divorce. (Matthew, 19/9; Mark, 10/11-12; Luke, 16/18)

Besides, Paul advises to excommunicate those who commit fornication. (I Corinthians, 5/1-2, 9-13)

In the following periods, the churches made some legal arrangements regarding the issue like atonement, temporary or permanent excommunication with varying time periods.

To sum up, fornication is a major sin in all heavenly religions and in the shared culture of humanity; it is also a crime that is punished in the world.

396. Three French Stores That Came to the United States and failed

(reference -- whenever I think in threes, I think of Jenna Marbles and her three looks)

In the late 80s to the early to mid 1990s, three French stores tried to set up shop on United States shores, and all three failed miserably.

When I think of the term “hypermarket”, my brain automatically begins playing the song, “I Just Can’t Get Enough”, and I begin to picture flashing lights and arcades and stupid kids screaming. Not a giant white box that is the size of three football fields that sold everything from groceries to fridges. Certainly nothing something inspired by the French.

But that was Carrefour. (which, when I first saw the name years ago I mistakingly read it as “carrie-four” at first--I believe its pronounced “CAR-four”) The Philadelphia location which opened in 1988 was so big that people who were assigned to do price checks wore roller skates to get around the store faster. Now that I’m thinking, my hometown WalMart tried doing this in the mid 90s when they had their Super Center renovation, they had a guy on rollerblades. My newspaper even did an article about him. I can’t imagine he lasted very long at WalMart due to liability reasons, having a guy rollerbade around a crowded store. Carrefour didn’t have this problem because ... nobody came. This place had 60 registers and nobody came! It lost $29 million in its first year. 3

One problem was, they didn’t advertise as well as they should. 1 I’ve been searching off an on for the past week about more info about these stores, and I’ve only found one newspaper ad from their short foray in Voorhees, New Jersey, and one commercial.

From what I’ve been reading, at the time, Americans just were not ready to go into a store that sold “radios and radicchio”. 2 This quote from the New York article: 

I feel like Chris just descried a modern day Sam’s Club. See, too ahead of their time. 

By September 1993, it was over. The Voorhees New Jersey location had only been open a year. These giant vacant stores were cut up into smaller stores. 

The second store, didn’t last nearly as long as Carrefour.  Leedmark, opened by the French hypermarket company E.Leclerc had one location in Glen Burnie, Maryland. The rough translation on the photo above:

Michel-Edouard was livin’ it up in Glen Burnie. I mean check this out: 

The dude walking by is like, “why would I want a shirt with my own country’s flag on it?” 

The little TVs at the registers were supposed to “entertain” people in line. I suspect lines were never long enough. 5

The store opened in May of 1991. Two years later, in October of 1993, the store was failing just like Carrefour. Nobody wanted to shop in such a giant store. 4 It was announced that the store would close by January of 1992. 6 The building was cut in two, one half was a WalMart and the other half was a Mars grocery store. From what I’ve seen on flickr, it looks like in the last ten years Mars has closed and the entire store is a giant WalMart. 

The final store is Galeries Lafayette, which is not a Hypermarket, but a high end department store from France. Opening in the old Bonwit Teller department store at Trump Tower, the store was announced in the Summer of 1991, and opened on September 28th of the same year. The French company took a giant risk of opening an unfamiliar store during a retail slump. 7 So many stores pooped the bed in the early 90s. I mean just in my area of Hampton, Virginia, Miller & Rhoads, Thalhimers, Hess’, Bradlees, Builder’s Square, all gone in the early 90s.

On opening day, shoppers gathered around the Bourjois display and marveled at the brightly colored French makeup. 9

The following Summer they had a Bastille Day celebration. They also lost 17 million dollars that year. 8

Two Summers later, it was over, on August 31st, 1994 it was announced that operations at the store would wind down.  There wasn’t enough in the store to make it different from the other stores on 5th avenue in New York City. 10 It was soon replaced by Nike Town. 

Honorable mentions, because they actually lasted until the early 2000s: 

biggs  biggs actually lasted in the U.S. until 2010. While Bigg’s wasn’t a chain in France, it was owned by the French company Euromarché. I asked around on twitter, and this was the first biggs that opened in the Eastgate area of Cincinnati, Ohio. It’s now home to a giant Jungle Jim’s grocery store. 

Auchan While the Illinois store flopped early on, Houston Texas held on to the French Hypermarket chain Auchan (pronounced “O-Shawn”) until 2003. Check out this commercial. Look at the kick ass bird logo flying through the store and letting us know about the deals on soda pop and sun tea jars.

Stopped for fuel and at Folkstone at 07:43 also now on the 08:20 train.

Fuel £13.26. 10.62 litres @ £1.249 a litre.

Just 100 miles to boarding the train.

On the train only 4 bikes. 08:33 and still not left it seems as if there is a problem with the train ahead.

On the move at 09:06.

Off the train 11:00 French time.

Made a promise not to go to far without a brake so stopped at 12:00 in Belgium service area for ham and eggs.

Railway museum a walk along the Ruhr, tram rides to and from the museum, town centre for lunch and a beer then a walk back to the hotel.

The weather was warm, hot at times but with cloud and threatened rain but it never appeared.

Thursday 4th July

A little ride out on the industrial trail along the Ruer found a small industrial museum but

Even thought he gates were open while wondering round some guys, I think, told me they were closed.

Next stop was the Coal Mining Museum in Bochum and was well worth the visit then it was back to the hotel to get out of the motorbike clobber and then a short walk and a tram ride into the centre.

It seems as if it’s festival week with lots of stalls and stages set up with couple of bands playing.

Another long day in the saddle with a few stops just to stretch my legs motorways most the way and pushing 90mph a lot of the time but still only an average of 50mph.

On arrival at the hotel I had mixed feelings as they don’t do evening meals and no internet which I missed when booking and also they want the payment in cash. On the upside I have a nice room over looking the railway and in the first couple of hours I have seen 3 steam hauled services.

I was advised that I could get an evening meal just round the corner in the Check Republic and so I went exploring and 3 minutes later I was in Chec........ and I found a nice bar and restaurant. 2 beers, chicken and chips for just under 10€.

Saturday 6th July

Took the bike down to Johstadt for a ride on the line down to Steinbach. Down hill mostly there and then a good ride back with the engine working well. Next I took the bike and followed the route and took photos and enjoyed the ride all the way to Steinbach. A great railway and well worth the visit. My Nikon camera played up yesterday so left it at the hotel so the pictures were taken on the i

phone or with the Panasonic HC-V380 that I am still getting used to.

Back at the hotel and decided to stay in and sat and watched some of the trains come passed my balcony and read as well as drinking the beer I bought yesterday. A pleasant End to the day.

Sunday 7th July

Had a good look at the Nikon and gave it a clean and it seem a little better so will take it with me today as well as the other cameras. First time trying it out side t wouldn’t focus again.

08:20 train t Cranzahl. Damp, cloudy and chilly. This was a run to see what’s what.

Came all the way back on the Same to Kurt Oberwiesenthal and walked round the town and had a late lunch and a beer... yes only one.

Got the 15:19 train back to Hammerunterwiesenthal the station where the BB is. Took more cam footage of trains coming through.

It’s been cloudy most the day but no rain.

Monday 8th July

Cloudy with a chill, latte motorcycle gloves today.

Took a ride round and headed fie mother railways but it wasn’t running but some superb roads and came back via the Czech Republic nice villages one was almost a ghost town.

“Soldier 396, kill this man”  The words echoed in my mind. I screamed, but nothing came out. I had no control over myself. The last thing I wanted to do was hurt this man. 

“y/n” Bruce called out to me “I know your in there”

Within a second I was running towards him ready to fight. my hand was on fire as I punched him. He didn’t fight back, which caused me to get angrier.

“Please don’t do this” He pleaded. I continued to try to stop myself as I suddenly burned his face. causing him to get angry.

I knew this wasn’t going to end well. I took off trying to get him away from the other men, but as he chased me, he took them out as well. Once we were clear, we continued to fight, I continued to anger him more and more, but the strange thing was the hulk wasn’t fighting to hurt me, he kept trying to stop me, but was getting angry because he couldn’t.

While we were fighting, I was still trying to get through to myself and with everything going on, I felt as if I was going to explode. All the emotions, pain, everything, causing me to fall over trying hard to gain control.

Hulk stopped and studied me, Seeing the flames take over my body as I cried out in pain, unsure of what was going on. He must’ve caught on to what was about to happen, when suddenly I was being held by the green giant.

Even though he was able to calm me down. There was an explosion, coming from me. Sending flames everywhere. Knocking me out. The last thing I remember was hearing the hulk roar out.

When I was conscious, I opened my eyes to Bruce holding me close, we were sitting down by the quinjet, he held me tightly, as if his life depended on it.

“Bruce” I spoke at almost a whisper

“Y/N? Is it you” He asked carefully

“Yes” I started crying. I pushed myself away from him. Scared that I might hurt him.

“It’s okay” He stepped closer to me. But I backed away.

“Don’t” I snapped, tears in my eyes. I made my way into the plane, doing the best I could to ignore his plea for me to comeback. I couldn’t look at him, not after what I did. I cant forgive myself for it.

It’s been three days. Three days since I returned. Three days, I’ve been ignoring Bruce, avoiding him completely.

“You need to talk to him” Nat tried her best.

“I can’t even look at him.” I started tearing up again. I stayed in my room and refused to come out. I wouldn’t let anyone touch me. Nat protested and refused to leave my room when I begged her to leave.

“Please just try to talk to him?” She urged. “He misses you” She walked out of my room, closing my door quietly.

“FRIDAY” I called out to the AI “Do not let anyone in”

“Yes miss Y/L/N” The AI called back.

I curled up into a ball in my bed. hiding myself deeper under my covers. I cried for what seemed like hours. I hated this. I wanted to talk to him. I wanted to hold him and apologize. I wanted to be near him.

I got up and made my way to my dresser and pulled out a big blue sweater. It still smelled like him. I put it on. I then put on some shorts and made my way back into my bed.

Bruce’s POV

I knew exactly why she wouldn’t talk to me I’ve been down this road way to many times. For some reason I wasn’t scared that I would go green around her, the other guy loved her. He didn’t want to hurt her when she fought him.

I was scared that I would hurt her, so I didn’t push anything serious with her.

I made my way to her room to try to talk to her again. I watched as Nat came out.

“She won’t budge.” She gave a small smile.

“I walked past her ready to knock on y/n’s door.

“FRIDAY” she called out “Do not let anyone in” I could hear the pain in her voice. I wanted to break down the damn door. I wanted to hold her close again and tell her everything will be okay. I wanted to tell her that I know what shes going through, I could help. I just wanted to take her pain away.

I listened as she cried herself to sleep. I stayed until I was certain she was asleep, before I made my way to my room down the hall.

The next morning, I was in the kitchen on the bar stool. Drinking a cup of coffee while reading a lab report on my tablet. I heard someone make their way into the kitchen, a little surprised since I’m usually the only one up at this hour.

I looked up to see y/n at the counter, reaching to grab a coffee cup. I studied  her features, her y/h/c was pulled back into a lazy bun, she wore shorts, and I realized that the blue sweater she was wearing was mine. I couldn’t help but smile a small smile.

“Y/N” I called to her. She froze “Please, talk to me”

“I..Can’t” She then left the room. coffee cup left on the counter .

I got up and followed her to her room. Before she could shut the door, I shoved my foot in the way stopping it.

“Bruce” She spoke quietly. “Please”

“No” I looked down into her eyes “Let me in. Let me talk to you and then I’ll leave you alone.”

“Fine” She moved over allowing me to enter, shutting the door behind me. I watched as she walked past me and sat on her bed.

“What is it?” She looked up at me

“I know how you feel. I really do. Emotions take over your body and the one thing you don’t want to happen. I get angry, the other guy comes out. I get scared that I would hurt someone. The last thing I want is to hurt someone, so i tend to stay alone. I know how you feel and I know how scary it is.” I walked closer to her bed “But you don’t have to go through it alone. I’ll be here for you. Every step of the way.”

“But the difference between us” She spoke up “I actually hurt you. Twice”

“No you didn’t” She looked at me confused. “When you burnt me I was already turning green. I was afraid the other guy would be mad that you hurt us but no. he wasn’t. He didn’t even want to hurt you. And when you burnt the whole place down, he wasn’t mad either, he was protecting you from yourself.”

“I can’t” She was starting to tear up.

“Hey” I was now sitting next to her

“No Bruce” She protested, crying once more “stop”

I didn’t listen, I pulled her closer to me and laid back on her bed. She cried into my chest. We didn’t say another word. I listened as she cried. I held her so close, refusing to let go.

Once she calmed down, she shifted herself to look up at me.

“I’m scared” She tried to slow her breathing.

“I know love, I know” I rubbed her back. We laid there for five more minutes in silence.

“Isn’t that my sweater?” I asked looking down at her.

“It smelled like you” She admitted

“You missed me” I joked

“I did” She adjusted herself, her legs tangled with mine, arms wrapped around me and her head was now resting on my chest once again. Soon enough she was asleep.

I looked at the time. It was now 9:30 in the morning. Tony would be expecting me to be there right now, since i’m always up early. Not right now. I needed to be with her.

I’ve fallen for her.

Twitter acquires podcast streaming platform Breaker

Twitter has announced today that it has acquired the podcast streaming platform Breaker, for an undisclosed amount. In a blog post,  Breaker CEO Erik Berlin said, “the Breaker team is joining Twitter!”. The company would help to improve the quality of “public conversation” on the social media platform and would also help Twitter’s new audio-based networking project, Twitter Spaces.

The CEO also informed that the Breaker application will be shut down on the 15th of January. Breaker, founded in 2016, started as a productivity platform, as Erik Berlin claims, and quickly became one of the best in the class listening platform for podcasts. With features like liking and commenting on episodes, the application attracted a wide array of audience and now the CEO says that they are inspired to go further in “re-imagining how we communicate with each other, beyond the scope of traditional podcasts.”

The CEO also shared his thoughts on why Twitter is a good fit for the company, going forward. He wrote, “Here at Breaker, we’re truly passionate about audio communication and we’re inspired by the ways Twitter is facilitating public conversations for people around the world. We’re impressed by the entrepreneurial spirit at Twitter and enthusiastic about the new experiences that the team is creating.”

Leach Culver, CTO of Breaker tweeted that she would join Twitter to help with Twitter Spaces, which is a new feature that lets users chat in real-time using voice instead of texts. The feature entered the beta stage last month, and is expected to launch pretty soon.

Breaker also informed that the current subscription holders of the platform will only need to export in an OPML file from Breaker and open that file in another podcast listening app to transfer their subscription. People who host a podcast on the platform can also transfer their podcast to another hosting service by using the RSS feed, whose link can be found on the Distribution tab.

Recently podcast streaming services have seen a hike in activity and thus, it comes as no surprise that Twitter want a piece of the action. Companies like Amazon and Sirius also made moves recently to acquire services like Wondery and Stitcher respectively.

On writer’s block and anime.

At age thirteen, I finished my first novel: poorly written beyond description but chock-full of an ambitious storyline and Harry-Potter-esque elements; in other words, 396 pages of pure, unadulterated imagination. I typed the last word of the story’s epilogue with irreplicable oomph, relished in its completion for about two weeks, and settled back in front of our bulky iMac to begin round two. This, I thought to myself, was the beginning of the writing career I’d dreamed of for so long. The rest of my life would be clockwork: book after book cranked out one after another, with nothing to go off of (and nothing else needed) but my work ethic and momentum.

I was in for a rude awakening, however, when I experienced it for the first time. A terrible, completely unfamiliar barricade between the part of my brain that strung words together and my fingertips, positioned at the ready over the ridges on the F and J keys. The tiny black cursor blinking against a stark white document didn’t look so much like an exciting new beginning anymore, just a sign of how much of nothing I had. I was told to have a conceptual skeleton in mind when beginning a new piece of writing, but I didn’t even have a conceptual femur, a rib, a stirrup (the smallest bone in the human body, thank you WebMD). The arsenal of ideas I thought I had at my disposal (things I liked about my first book that I wanted to expand on, to revamp, things I hadn’t written about that I wanted to experiment with, and everything in between) had sealed itself up. Something had put a damper on my creativity like molasses poured over the cogs of my brain, and I would soon come to realize this something had a name.

All of us have experienced writer’s block before. To different extents, surely, since writer’s block is far more dire for a freelance author struggling to pay rent than for a high schooler struggling to turn in UC applications on time (not like I speak from experience, or anything), but it’s a universal experience to not have the first clue what to write, and to not know what the hell to do about it. 

As someone who’s been writing her whole life in some form or another, I’ve searched high and low for appropriate ways to combat writer’s block, and the methods I’ve discovered have always varied depending on the type of writing in question: skimming important textbook chapters for AP U.S. History essays, rewatching eventful episodes for Criminal Minds fanfiction, watching (and seething with jealousy at) YouTube tutorials for bullet journal spreads, et cetera. Scholar David Bartholomae’s work builds off this idea; he offers his impression of writer’s block only from an academic standpoint, drawing from his experiences as a professor to define writer’s block for college students and college students only. He acknowledges that student-specific difficulties with writing exist, just as blogger-specific or novelist-specific difficulties are just as prominent for writers in those respective fields. Academic writing, which is unique in that it’s being graded, must also cater to the reader in order to reflect well on one’s transcript; students don’t only need to tailor their writing to the subject matter at hand, but also to the professor grading their work. Instructors tend to have certain preferences when it comes to various components of writing, such as sentence structure or word choice, all factors that students try to take into account — all factors that make writing harder.

I remember an earlier writing mentor referring to her writer’s block as an “inspiration deficiency”, a description that made sense for years of my life, but I now know that writer’s block isn’t quite as straightforward as she made it out to be. Calling it a deficiency of something assumes that we know exactly what’s missing, so it should, theoretically, be easy to fight off. Deficient in inspiration? Easy: get inspired. Watch motivational Ted Talks. Listen to MarioKart music on two-times speed. Leaf through your favorite books until you remember what aspects of the authors’ writing you hope to emulate. It’s never enough, because writer’s block is the result of a lack of a lot of things: time to write, motivation to write, emotional, mental, or physical wellness, or anything that helps our brains digest information. 

It’s not just a lack of these intangible factors, however. Scholar Jan Corbett, building upon Bartholomae’s interpretation of writer’s block among students, postulates that the cause of writer’s block is actually too many ideas and muddled thought processes. This leads to a state of mind that isn’t so much an “inspiration deficiency” as it is an “inspiration death”, inspiration being completely absent and seemingly unattainable. On top of that, students tend to have botched understandings of the rhetorical conventions of expository essays, so misconceptions about writing only exacerbate the existing problem of being confused as hell. TL;DR: writer’s block, like most things, is incredibly multi-dimensional, and it’s hard to know where to begin remedying it. I believe the answer to that question is to first define what it means to each of us.

Professor Jill Aeschbacher defines her writer’s block as a tall brick wall, of which the dimensions symbolize various factors that hinder her writing. Its width is proportional to the image that she gives herself as a writer, its length is her ego’s desires to express herself through writing, and its height is her fear of expecting too much, only to let herself down. Putting an image to the thing keeping her from producing prose has helped her assert her goal: to reach a headspace where she can appreciate the mechanics of the craft rather than the quality, therefore lowering her expectations to a manageable level (not to be lazy, but to be reasonable. We’ve all had standards for ourselves that were more damaging than anything). After reading her work, I’ve taken a page out of her book (literally) to procure my own wall-related personification of writer’s block.

I watched an anime called Attack on Titan this summer. It’s a fantastically written, apocalyptic tale where man-eating, massive monsters called Titans roam free; the small population of surviving humans erect three colossal, concentric walls to protect themselves, the show following their attempts to stay alive among these deadly circumstances. The reason why I bring this up isn’t just to gush about high-quality television (season 4 coming out on December 7th, be there or be square), but to draw an analogy: I am a Titan, and my writer’s block is represented by these three walls. 

The outermost wall, Wall Maria, is destroyed first in the show due to its lack of tight security and proximity to Titan territory; this is inspiration, the wall that is metaphorically broken down first when that je nais se quois happens, things fall into place, and I figure out what to write about. The second wall is named Wall Rose, which is much further inland, populated with richer individuals and more capable protectors, thus harder to break down: this is expression. With the destruction of this wall, I am able to translate my ideas from arbitrary shower thoughts to coherent, usable sentences. The third and final wall, which contains the untouchable home to the royal Reiss family, is Wall Sina. When my hulking, bloodthirsty Titan self takes this wall down, I achieve application: the integration, connection, and expansion of my ideas until they hatch into beautiful butterflies of prose. (I now realize that Wall Sina is virtually impossible to breach in the canon of the show, but I assure you that application is much more realistic of a goal. Maybe this wasn’t the best metaphor.)

So I’ve made it into Wall Sina and successfully eaten the queen, but one question lingers. What prompted the building of the walls in the first place? Translated back from far-fetched anime metaphor to English, what are the mental processes behind writer’s block, and is it possible to put its origins into words? Cue Michael Anthony Rose, an expert on writer’s block (probably because of repeated exposure. I feel for him), and his six basic reasons for why writer’s block exists among students.

Overly-rigid writing rules. Like Jill Aeschbacher, whose high expectations were subconsciously restraining her from writing, students who place too many restrictions on themselves will find words nearly impossible to mold to their liking.

Misleading assumptions about composing. This ties into Jan Corbett’s notion that a student must be thoroughly familiar with the conventions of academic writing in order to write at their best ability. Clarity breeds efficiency. Someone put that on a pillow.

Premature editing. Write first, revise later. It’s nearly impossible to know how an idea, no matter how out of place it seems at first, contributes to a paper after it’s completed. Writing and editing at the same time is something I’d done for years before realizing how detrimental to my writing process it was. Every thought counts.

Poor planning. Another thing I’ve been doing for years, except this one I have yet to correct. Leave ample time for assignment completion, obviously, and leave ample possibilities for writing completion. If only I ever took my own advice.

Conflicting strategies. Jan Corbett also warns us about this: “creative death”, as she calls it, by an overload of ideas. Hone in on what writing approach would best suit the assignment right away and act accordingly; taking on too much at once is sure to cause confusion.

Misunderstanding evaluation criteria. David Bartholomae emphasizes that understanding a professor’s rubric is a two-way street; students must take the time to digest their instructor’s expectations, but instructors are also expected to delineate their expectations clearly.

I was skeptical after reading these for the first time. Rose had taken the shroud of mystery that is writer’s block and given it such understandable, straightforward explanations that they seemed too good to be true. But I was able to utilize the teachings of fellow writer’s block experts Jan Corbett, Jill Aeschbacher, and David Bartholomae to explain his findings, which I think is a testament to their integrity. As aforementioned, writer’s block is hard to generalize because of how nuanced it can be, so no stress if not all of Rose’s reasons apply to you; his work serves as a mere framework for what is ultimately much more complex and varied.

Is envisioning my writer’s block in the Attack on Titan universe an excuse for me to further indulge in its incredible universe? Possibly. Do I think that the imagery helps me to better understand and therefore manage my writer’s block? Definitely. By no means am I capable of avoiding writer’s block entirely, nor do I think I ever will be, but I’m certainly learning to accept writer’s block as a completely natural, expected part of the writing process. We’re not learning unless we’re doing something wrong; similarly, we’re not writing as best we can if we’re not struggling to do so. What’s the point of having a Titan around if there are no walls for it to break, after all?

The two will fight from the MGM Grand Conference Center aka the “Las Vegas Bubble.”   Promoted by Top Rank, Lomachenko-Lopez (ESPN and ESPN Deportes, 10 p.m. ET) headlines a can’t-miss month of boxing on the ESPN family of networks, which also includes the long-awaited return of Japanese pound-for-pound superstar Naoya “Monster” Inoue, who will defend his WBA and IBF bantamweight world titles on Halloween evening, Saturday, Oct. 31, against Australian contender Jason “Mayhem” Moloney.   “Lomachenko-Lopez is the best fight that can be made in boxing, and we are delighted that it will be available to fans for no extra charge live on ESPN,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Teofimo and Vasiliy demanded the fight, and we are glad we could make it happen. Prior to the Donaire bout, Inoue knocked out four consecutive opponents in three rounds or less, including a second-round stoppage over Emmanuel Rodriguez to win the IBF world title.
