Love the way Rosco and Despereaux are narrative foils. Their love for the light led them into the darkness. One of them wore what he wanted on his sleeve so that he was exiled for it and the other locked what he wanted away where only he was ever allowed to see it. They both lost their tails for different facets of the same quest. They both had their hearts broken, but one managed to put it back together right with forgiveness and the other didn't know how to mend his properly. One is a deceiver. The other is pure earnestness. One of them belongs not where he was born, but where he loves. The other doesn't belong anywhere, neither where he was born nor where he loves.

after sitting on this game in my steam wishlist for ages, I finally gave it a try when another one of my friends started it, and it ended up becoming one of my favorite rpgs (and games in general) of all time. the emotional rollercoaster this game put me through is unparalleled. so obviously i needed to turn all the main characters into ponies and funny animals.

Notes on my reasoning and thoughts below! (Including major game spoilers!)

As for the sonic character animals the reasons are a lot more simple also i didnt for au lore crazy with them. theyre just furries now: Siffrin- he literally goes nya. he makes cat mouths all the time. they also like silently hanging out with their loved ones, agile and sneaky, etc. Mirabelle- she is so fucking nervous all the time. a little guy seemed fitting. Also, unintentionally, her being a mouse with her rapier makes her look like the tale of despereaux guy Isabeau- a supportive, happy go lucky guy being made a dog seemed pretty obvious, but i wanted to be a little more creative and thoughtful than that, so i specifically went for a smarter dog breed: a collie :] kind of like herding he also brings and corrals the group together Odile- suggestion of a friend, a yellow-throated marten :] just looked really cool and very odile. simple as that Bonnie- wombat-- suggestion from a friend, too :] But in general the idea was a burrowing animal, because they're digging in the ground for tubers to me.

I really want to do a deep dive on Pierre Despereaux but we really dont know anything about him. Plus he shows up again later so maybe i’ll save it for then. The Pierre we see here though comes across as kind of lonely to me. Hes been a thief for so long, having to keep aliases, constantly moving, never getting to really show off just how smart he is because he cant divulge the real con- maybe thats why he gains a familiarity with shawn in particular. I doubt he buys into the whole psychic schtick so he has to know shawn has a level of genius that can compete with his own. Actually, when he said, “I knew you were worthy,” he almost sounds relieved, like hes been waiting for someone just like him to finally play the cat and mouse game hes been itching to play. Afterall, what fun is it to be a thief when you know you wont get caught?

Shawn really went all out for Abigail. I mean by this point i think they’ve only dated for a couple months at most, and granted he paid for it all with Gus’s money so it wasn’t a huge sacrifice for him particularly, but all the same, he clearly wanted to impress her. Which i think is already a stone in their break up as hes trying to be someone he’s not.

But to be clear, Shawn was a real dick to Gus this episode, racking up debt and then using his phone call. Like, id be pissed. Sometimes i think gus deserves better haha

Working in the shop yesterday morning, I heard a commotion at the front door. Two young men -- one heavy-set, the other much smaller -- barged through the front door. They wore knit caps and large coats and they carried a brightly-painted wooden crate, a book, and a large jar. They stopped when they saw me and the larger man shoved the smaller one forward. "Do it, eh!"

The smaller man replied, "No way, eh? You do it."

"I did it at the beer store. It's your turn."

The smaller man grabbed a stack of books, apparently at random, and put them in the crate. He put the crate on the counter. "We want these, OK?"

They stood there awkwardly, staring at me. I took that as my cue to ring up the books. I took the first one and checked the price and began to enter the amount on the register.

"Uh, I believe there'll be no charge for these books," the larger man said.

"Excuse me?"

He grabbed the book they had brought with them. "OK, we bought this book from YOUR bookstore, and we were at our book club, and a friend of ours -- a cop! -- found a mouse in this book. And he said when that happens, you get free books."

"It's in the Canadian criminal code," the smaller man added. "There's precedent in legal cases."

I stared at them in confusion. "It's The Tale of Despereaux. It's about a mouse. So yes, there is a mouse in the book. You do not get free books because a book has a mouse in it. And we are not in Canada, so whatever is in the Canadian criminal code is not applicable."

At the back of the shop, Crowley overheard the conversation and began moving toward the men.

"I told you this wouldn't work!" the smaller man whispered.

"Release the moths!" the other man shouted.

"We let 'em out at the movie theater."

"You were supposed to get more moths, you knob! Why'd you bring the jar if you didn't get more moths?"

At this point, Crowley stepped up to the counter. "I know you two," he said. "You're the McKenzie brothers. You want free books? Go to the publisher!"

"You sure you don't want to think about it?" asked the larger man.

Crowley grabbed the front of his jacket and pulled him to within an inch of his face. "I'm sure," Crowley answered.

Crowley can be a rather intimidating presence. The brothers wisely exited the shop immediately, leaving behind the crate, the jar, and The Tale of Despereaux.

I suppose I shall put the crate with the other strange boxes that I've accumulated through the years. The basement is full of them.
