thinking about Simon who just gets out of prison for murder after he's been locked up since he was 18, and starts working at a slaughterhouse for his parole. a big, scary dog who has bloodstains all over him, permanently crusted in the crease of his nails because he prefers field dressing over dragging the carcass inside the shop. who always smells of iron and sweat, and looms over you like he was trying to keep everyone else from looking at you. possessive, but you only know him from rumours and blog posts. his stare, the intense, hungry way he looks at you always gives you the creeps.

he's bad news. and he tries to woo you by feeding you meat from the animals he butchered (getting angry whenever you buy cuts from someone else), and won't go away even when you tell him to leave you alone. you've heard the rumours. read the news articles. nothing about this man is any good—

but he won't, of course. the thing about prison is that you need to hold onto the things that you have and take the stuff that you don't. a sort of cutthroat survival that has raised him better than his own mother. so, when he finds you (something he doesn't have, but wants), it's just in his nature to take.

the thing about eddie is that he's not even that angry or grumpy of a guy. he just has a dry personality so it comes across as that way sometimes. he really is just a go with the flow kind of guy ( with insane control issues in other aspects ( its because he's a scorpio ) ). plus u know, the autism and not knowing how to interact with people because he never really has. he was a shy kid that hid behind shannon then got her pregnant then ran away to the military then ran away to LA and started an extremely codependent friendship with buck. but anyway. when he's shown being angry or violent it's usually not because he's actually angry but because of anxiety or self hatred or another intense emotion or something else is going on. it's the only way he knows how to let it out. he really is a level headed guy when it comes to his anger towards for other people. like you'll know if he doesn't like you but he's not going to be outwardly mean to you because his abuela would hit him over the head if he was. there's exceptions to this of course because he's also just insane and who knows what he'll do on any given day honestly. but yeah anyway. i don't really know what i'm saying other than anger isn't a default emotion for eddie and it's usually just to cover up whatever else he's feeling. he can be very bitchy though which is not the same thing <3

Small rant about my mother/autism:

Obsessed with the fact that my mom insists that her church friend’s son is autistic bc he figured out how to steal from an atm but refuses to believe her own daughter, who has sensory issues, horrible social skills/understanding, has had the same special interest since she was 3, is a “picky eater”, had multiple meltdowns/tantrums growing up bc the environment I was in was too much for me to process, actively enjoys/is calmed by organizing and lining things up, can’t make eye contact to save her life, and had multiple teachers/counselors tell her that I was a bit “off” but it’s okay bc my pattern recognition skills were off the charts which meant I must be some kind of genius! - is. Apparently she even had a a friend at work and a therapist she was seeing suggest it when I was having trouble in middle school but she shot down the idea bc my cousin (dads side- not the one I’ve complained about here) is autistic but only bc her mom smoked during pregnancy and there’s no way it was genetic at all. First of all, have you met your father in law and your husband? Second of all, your friend has THREE autistic children despite never smoking or drinking bc it runs on their fathers side. Do you not think she might’ve know what she was talking about?!?!!?

Strange Bedfellows: these unprecedented photos show a leafcutter bee sharing its nest with a wolfspider

I stumbled across these photos while I was looking up information on leafcutter bees, and I just thought that this was too cool not to share. Captured by an amateur photographer named Laurence Sanders, the photos were taken in Queensland, Australia several years ago, and they quickly garnered the attention of both entomologists and arachnologists.

The leafcutter bee (Megachile macularis) can be seen fetching freshly-cut leaves, which she uses to line the inner walls of her nest. The wolfspider moves aside as the bee approaches, allowing her to enter the nest, and then she simply watches as the leaf is positioned along the inner wall.

Once the leaf is in position, they seem to inspect the nest together, sitting side-by-side in the entryway; the bee eventually flies off again to gather more leaves, while the wolfspider climbs back into the burrow.

The leafcutter bee seems completely at ease in the presence of the wolfspider, which is normally a voracious predator, and the wolfspider is equally unfazed by the fact that it shares its burrow with an enormous bee.

The photographer encountered this bizarre scene by accident, and he then captured a series of images over the course of about 2 days (these are just a few of the photos that were taken). During that 2-day period, the bee was seen entering the nest with pieces of foliage dozens of times, gradually constructing the walls and brood chambers of its nest, and the spider was clearly occupying the same burrow, but they did not exhibit any signs of aggression toward one another.

The photos have been examined by various entomologists and arachnologists, and those experts seem ubiquitously surprised by the behavior that the images depict. The curator of entomology at Victoria Museum, Dr. Ken Walker, noted that this may be the very first time that this behavior has ever been documented, while Dr. Robert Raven, an arachnid expert at the Queensland Museum, described it as a "bizarre" situation.

This arrangement is completely unheard of, and the images are a fascinating sight to behold.

crime and the legal/justice system in socialist countries are mostly discussed in the context of political prisoners etc (which is worthy of criticism, i believe in freedom of speech) but i've been meaning to read more about the justice system in the context of crimes that happen in any society. from my very limited amount of research on this it seems that 1. the death penalty was used regularly, not only for murder etc but for economic crimes too (eg embezzlement of large sums of money), 2. outside of political/politicized cases the courts were generally fairly fair and normal, 3. soviet authorities did not always keep detailed records and statistics of criminal activity and when they started doing it this information was not released. i was unable to find any definitive answers on crime rates. from anecdotal experience (+ not even mentioning everything about the chikatilo case in the ussr) law enforcement was not extremely competent. a relative of mine was brutally murdered in a socialist country (in a public place!) but the case went cold (bc he had no ties to criminal activity etc whatsoever, nobody with motive was found. he was just a random worker going home). at least they tried to do their job though ig.

also maybe this is a wrong impression but it seems that in the imagination of most westerners at least, ordinary criminals in the socialist block didn't really exist.

Murder Makes A Detective is one of those stories that I don't know if I will actually ever do anything fully with it. It's one of those things that started off as an AU discussion among my friend and I. Then me coming to the conclusion that if I were to write something more for it than I have, that there's no reason for it to be an AU and would probably be better for it to be an original work.

Now the actual premise of the story is that the main character becomes a detective after one of her parents was brutally murdered when she was a child (probably her mom) and her other parent was thrown in jail (innocently, probably her dad) for many years (15-20, but at least 10) before her parent finally wins an appeal once technology has advanced more from the original crime. So because of the main character's experience with her mother's death and father's unfair jailing, she wants to and does become a detective so she can try and keep that from happening to other people who are going through the worst moments of their lives.
