Steve’s backstory is so fun to play with. especially when diving into his sexuality crisis. Here’s an example: (tw for homophobia, use of a *censored* slur, queer as an insult, mentions of Billy)

Steve Harrington wasn’t gay. He wasn’t, he couldn’t be. He liked girls.

But then why did he like Eddie? Why did every bone in his body want to disobey what he had always known and just kiss the man? It made little sense.

Steve liked girls. He liked how they looked and smelled and how easy everything was with them, and how perfect and pretty they were.

But he liked Eddie. He liked how Eddie looked and smelled and how increasingly difficult it was to be around him each and every passing second, but how despite that he felt this sense of calm in his presence. He liked how freakish and weird and unique Eddie was. And fuck, Eddie was pretty too. Eddie was breathtakingly beautiful, with his gleaming eyes and his wide smile and his curls that Steve wanted to run his fingers through.

Steve liked girls. But goddamn, did he like Eddie.

He tried to think of any possible explanation he could be feeling this way about Eddie that was platonic. He tried and he tried and he tried, but nothing came. This wasn’t how he felt about anyone he had ever just wanted to be friends with. But it wasn’t really how he had felt about Nancy either.

It was something new, something dangerous, something that sent a rush of fear and excitement through his veins. It felt forbidden, in a way, like something Steve wanted but couldn’t have.

And then he thought about Billy. Billy, with his smirks and his glances and the way he made Steve so angry he could just punch him or kiss him or both. And maybe he wasn’t so straight after all.

He screamed into a pillow until he felt faint, and he finally pulled it away, throwing it across the room to add to the piles of littered garbage on the floor.

It wasn’t that Steve wasn’t gay. It’s that he couldn’t be. There’s no way in hell Steve Harrington could be gay. If he was anyone else, maybe he could live with it. But he was Steve. Steve, who spent his high school years gaining the reputation of “The King” because he was the best of the best and all the girls wanted him. Steve, who’s dad had sat him down when he was little and told him if he turned out to be a f*g, he wouldn’t get a single penny of the money they had saved for him. Steve, who used the words “gay” and “queer” as insults for people lower than him, people that he spit on. Steve, who’s whole life was given to him on a silver platter that hid the poisonous truth of his very being. Steve, who’s whole future was planned for him. A future that included a wife, and kids, and a big house that he bought with the money he earned at his fathers company. A future that would be ruined if he even dared to act on his impulses. The perfect life, even if it wasn’t the one he wanted.

He would take comfort over truth any day.

How does one know they're in love?

Everyone realizes differently, is what I’ve heard. I can’t speak from experience but from what I’ve seen it’s a harrowing process filled with an endless amount of self doubting questions and longing stares and so much tip toeing around the subject of your affection.
