thinking about ortus in HTN talking about how he failed harrow in her childhood. thinking about ortus as maybe one of the few 9th house adults that could have stepped in to support her and maybe also one of the few that saw the cycle of abuse for what it was - he knew why his father died, and even so he hated his father, was willing to leave the 9th - but in life, he failed her. and like i wonder how old little baby cavalier ortus was when he realized that something in that house was just rotten. and i wonder how lonely it would’ve been all those years, alone with ancient fanatics and 2 abused children ortus was too weak and afraid to save. i mean, until harrow puppeted her parents, he was going to have to marry harrow! and there was nothing he could do! so he retreats further into his poetry. only after death, only when it was too late, only when harrow was grown up did he have the bravery or maybe freedom or maybe distance to finally step forward.

The thing about Jiang Cheng is that he’s not any different from the type of person who will claim that his parents divorcing during his childhood ruined his life while neglecting to mention that the reason for the divorce was because one of his parents was abusive. Was it wrong for him to want his parents to get along as a child? No. Was it wrong for a young Jiang Cheng to not view his mother as a terrible person? No. But 30+ year-old Jiang Cheng, guardian of a small child, himself, has not only failed to realize his mother was an abusive partner and parent, he has internalized her parenting skills and worldview as admirable, completing throwing his father’s teachings and the legacy of the clan whose name he bears to the wayside. That’s not sympathetic!

Man, I want shapeshifter cap SO BAD.
I want to see a Billy that really leans into the wonder of the world, the million paths a child could take in their life.
I want to see a Billy that wants to try everything, at least once.
A Billy that looks at all the people who spit at him, deride him, pity him, dismiss him, ignore him, because he has no future, no prospects, a child in the gutter and say no. I'm going to grow up to be whoever I want to be.
And a captain marvel that says you're going to be amazing.
Billy taking the premise of captain marvels form - his ideal self, a blank slate for Billy to paint his bright colours, the person he wants to be deep inside - and dialling that freedom up to eleven.
A dancer, a dinosaur, a train conductor, a tiger, an ice cream maker, a butterfly, an astronaut, a shark, a college student, a Tamaranean, a mouse, a scuba diver, an elephant, a doctor, a moose, a race car driver, a dog.
A child wanting to see the world.
If you want to find captain marvel, well first you've got to try his comm, probably a couple times.
Then you've got to go to fawcett, hope he's there and not saving the yetis from a salamander invasion in a different dimension.
You've got to ask around, because it often goes by word of mouth here, no matter what technology you bring. Don't worry, it'll spread very quickly, but if you're in a hurry you can find his commemorative statue and leave an offering. No one knows if it really works, but it's a good way to pass the time and feel productive.
Soon, a face will peel out of the crowd. It's always familiar, but it's never the same one.
Wait for the flash of lightning in a cloudless sky.
And then you will find captain marvel.

The thing that's so endearing to me about the fact that Jess was obsessed with Almost Famous is that... There's something so earnest and idealistic about this film. Like, at its core, it's about people who love music (or even writing about music) and about people who are searching for something that's real, trying to figure out how to be honest with each other and with themselves, and longing for a genuine connection with other human beings. And everyone gets a happy ending! They all end up better as people from having been on this journey together. The pain and the love is all incredibly sincere, and while there are certainly humorous moments, there is nothing flippant here. And yeah, ultimately, all of that very much fits with who Jess ends up being as a person in the long-run, but the fact that this was his favorite movie in Season 3 just confirms to me that this is who he has always been, all along.
