I watched Starship Troopers tonight.
#personal#dumb#my art#immediately after finishing i was pumped to watch some analysis vids on it#cuz i heard a lot of the drama about the original author being a pro military fascist and the director going “fuck that” and making a satir#scrolling through youtube search results was not promising. lots of male film buffs i would Not trust even on a first glance.#“The Critical Drinker” (pfp of a bearded man drinking alcohol) lol.#and then I saw cinemawins did a video on it and was like oh nice i haven't seen his stuff in a while but he's a pretty leftist creator#scrolled through the comments#second panel face#this sucks i'm outta here.#just leagues and leagues and leagues of anime pfps and right leaning people dogpiling on him for “not understanding what fascism is”#idk it's pretty alien and weird to me watching this movie and going “wow yeah that was pretty obvious huh” like literally the from opening#to the teacher preaching militance and only giving voting rights to “those who serve their nation first and earn it”#and then seeing droves of people online going#WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? It's not anti-fascist and even if it was it's#the director's fault for desecrating heinlein's incredible sci-fi epic vision. ermm media literacy is dead.

CASTIEL: Stop. What's the point if you don't mean it? You fear me - not love, not respect, just fear.
[youtube with closed captions]
a godstiel pity party. i'd like to thank an anon i got way back in february of 2021.
#spn#vid#spnamvarchive#so fun fact i started making this more than a year ago. got it 90% done. and then was like no this isn't working#i will come back to this later.#it turns out that i needed to make some videos about cas and angels (the love club + help i'm alive amvs)#in order to make this one. anyway this video is about french mistake robert singer voice season six#i really struggled with it because i could NOT find the thread until i realized that it needed to be literally godstiel pov#it's about love and desire and jealousy and hurt and omnidirectional rage <3#it's about the fact that cas is so utterly dependent on dean for his self-image - however dean sees him that's it#it's about having a moment of reflection about lashing out before you do it but doing it anyway#it's about taking cruelty and dishing it out#and crucially. it's about being pregnant#mpregpocalypse#fun fact: i made a post about working on three season six amvs all the way back in nov. 2022#and only now have they come to fruition (this one + love club + metric)#anyway. have you heard that cas is obsessed#the thing is i do kinda want to add some specific director's commentary here. like the first verse is about cas being like.#incredibly deeply emotionally vulnerable to dean. as in: his emotional state and self-image is totally dominated by what dean thinks of him#and if dean is mad at him. and then the second verse is about... dean upsetting him and him responding to that by Killing Everybody lol#like he has a moment of reflection ['certain regrettable things are now required of me' + killing rachel] where he's like i've 1) also done#bad things and 2) i feel bad about it so maybe i will regret Killing Everyone. but then he does it anyway due to everybody keeps turning#on him. i feel like the rest of the amv is self evident. i guess i should note that 'share a paradise' is about how both of them have#a nostalgic view of the early days of their relationship when it wasn't Like This lol. but everything else i think is self evident.#oh and the reason the other angels flash onscreen with their burned wings at the end is i'm EVOKING the image of cas' wings burning. even#though it doesn't happen. i'm evoking it

We just got out of Nosferatu and my main takeaway (aside from HOLY FUCK BILL SKARSGARD) is that I DESPERATELY need Pedro Pascal to be cast in an Eggers movie.
The way Robert Eggers directs and chooses lighting and makes decisions and turns out one beautiful project after another is astounding and I’d love to see what he could come up with for Pedro - and what Pedro could DO with such an incredibly led project.
#nosferatu#robert eggers#this movie was incredible#i need to see it again#he might be my favorite horror director#every single performance was AMAZING#count orlok was TERRIFYING#but uh… that voice#Pedro pascal needs to make an actual horror movie

worst trope is found family separating as soon as the antagonist is dealt with.
#yes this is about voltron and it's also about guardians of the galaxy#what james gunn did to gamora in GOTG3 is criminal#i understand why they did it but to end with her GOING BACK TO THE RAVAGERS?#fail end.#seriously#and it doesnt even make sense bc ofc the high evolutionary isnt going to be the last problem they would deal with#in just a few years they encountered 5 people trying to destroy the universe and who were incredibly difficult foes#youre finna tell me there will never be a situation like that for the rest of their lives?#gtfo#and mantis' end was dumb too not even sorry#i can tolerate drax and nebula's ends.#but everyone else?#stupid#even peter's ending was fucking moronic. bro can pop in on the weekends he doesnt need to be a live in nurse for his grandpa#it's just such a major letdown and sucks everytime a director/author decides to split up the found family permanently#at least with voltron you can rationalize it by saying 'oh they never really wouldve hung out with eachother if they werent forced to for#voltron and werent forced to fight a war together.' and i can see it bc none of them DO hang out together before voltron#they barely even hang out AFTER they become voltron#keith and shiro hang out bc of the adoption/fostering/mentoring thing. lance and hunk MIGHT hang out bc they were already teammates#it's important to note that we never really see hunk and lance being bffs. theyre just friendly to eachother.#this becomes even more apparent once hunk and pidge actually become friends. it's very obvious hunk was just being friendly to lance.#just friendly.#(take this with a grain of salt bc ive only watched the whole series one time. i refuse to acknowledge anything after se 2.)#so yeah it does make more sense theyd all go their own ways but not even the small friend groups stay together at the end!#pidge and hunk are in completely different galaxies from eachother. same with keith and shiro#lance is isolated from all of them bc post se 3 writing team genuinely hated him and failed him as a character.#but GOTG3? they CHOSE to band together time and time again. they CHOSE to be a team. they CHOSE to be family#for every single one of them to say 'nah fuck that i want to be on my own bc uhhh reasons!' is a lame ending.#period.#gotg3

Watching Jana Gana Mana and my jaw was on the floor at this scene, Prithvi was just so brilliant in this movie and the message was so important as well. Truly impressed with the way they presented this one with many twists in the process. Can’t wait for the sequel that we don’t know yet when it will came out because Prithvi have so many sequels in line (Salaar 2, Lucifer 2, Jana Gana Mana 2. Hopefully we gonna get all the sequels soon!)
#prithviraj sukumaran#malayalam cinema#jana gana mana#he is such a terrific actor#love him even more after watching his other movies beside#salaar#he is also a really good director with his bro daddy and lucifer#he is too talented for words#just so damn good#prabhas voice like sir how many talents you have like how many lol#politics#indian politics#politics of hate#speech#incredible speech

Does it ever feel pressuring (no pun intended) to work on a show with such a legacy and history as SpongeBob?
VERY much so, but in a good way, if such a thing exists! one of our mantras on our little storyboard plussing team is “pressure makes diamonds” and it is a very applicable saying
when i first started, i was TEEEEERRRIFIED! i really felt like i had no idea what i was doing, and there have been so many times where i’ve turned in a section and genuinely thought “oh my god they’re gonna fire me for this it’s so bad.” working in animation is frazzling enough! but not only are we working on a cultural mecca, with not only the kids of today to entertain, impress and inspire, but to maintain the integrity of the series and entertain/impress/inspire the kids like us who grew up with the show, we are also working with literal animation legends and animation veterans!! it’s pretty surreal to be working on the same show as someone like Bob Camp, who’s been in the industry for 40+ years… and even more surreal when he says he’s a big fan of your work 😵💫‼️‼️‼️‼️
THANKFULLY, i’ve made a lot of strides in curbing some of my storyboarding stage fright. it used to be really bad when i started, like genuinely panic attack inducing! the constant patience and guidance and encouragement of my peers and consistent practice from these past three years have really allowed me to grow and blossom. now, when i feel a bit claustrophobic in remembering the pure scale of what we’re doing, i weaponize it for good!!
i think of how inspired and amazed and obsessed with SpongeBob i was as a kid. how it inspired me to draw, how i remember drawing along to episodes and commercial breaks. my brother and his wife are both elementary school teachers and routinely update me about how their kids are still crazy for SB (and they both brag about me to their kids heheh). i think of all the kids watching, all the kids realizing that getting to draw these characters and interact with them and live in their world is something you indeed can do, all the kids who religiously catch each new episode like i once did… it just fills me with so much confidence and hope and love, and that motivates me to deliver and do my best and try to do what i can to help make each episode be better and more fun than the last
SpongeBob is for everyone, obviously! that’s one of the great things i love about working on it: i get just as much enjoyment watching our finished episodes as our target audience. but i do bring up the kids particularly often because, at the end of the day, that is who we are doing it for and i also just can’t help but think back to how my SpongeBob obsessed self as a kid would have had her world rocked to know i’m doing what i’m doing. i want to give those kids, who i used to be and still essentially am, the same joy and spark and all consuming inspiration i felt and still do
there are definitely some days where the gravity of what we’re doing hits harder than others! some days are a lot more difficult than others. this is an absolute dream job, i’m not just saying that, i always fantasized about maybe one day being able to work my way up to working on SpongeBob and now it’s my first animation job—but it is very easy to get overwhelmed by just how big of a legacy we’re carrying on our shoulders! how many other mega talented people work on this show! there’s a lot to juggle. but we juggle it well. there is so much love and heart and care poured into this show. we do everything we can to maintain the integrity of the characters and the show’s core, and it just makes me love what i do all the more and makes me more determined to do it
TLDR: YES! but i’m much better off for it, because it reminds me of why we’re working so hard to begin with. we all want this show to be the best it can—to maintain its core 25 years later, but still have fun doing it. i mentioned this on Twitter, but when i met Bill Fagerbakke last month he was saying how cool it is that fans who grew up with the show are now able to work on it and i couldn’t agree more. it’s the greatest honor imaginable being able to carry such a monumental torch, and i hope i’m able to keep at it for a long, long time.
#sorry if this is more unintelligible than usual i was pretty distracted answering this HAHA but it’s such a good ask#anonymous#long post#ALSO. just in case: i don’t feel pressured by anyone at my job i love the people i work with and they are incredibly gracious and caring#once storyboard pro crashed and i lost a bunch of work and frantically messaged my director being like i’m so so so sorry but i can’t get#this in EOD can we do Monday etc. and he asked if i could call just to see if i was doing okay emotionally and talked to me about it etc etc#so everyone is wonderful and when i say pressure i mean just the scope of what we’re doing/typical pressures of working in animation. i#don’t feel pressured or overworked by my bosses or anything like that everyone on the show is amazing. JUUUST in case anyone got the wrong#idea

ya boy tumblr user bumblingest-bee has just auditioned for assassins 😎
#bee posts nonsense#it went pretty well i really really enjoyed it. incredibly fun for an audition#god only knows if i get called back but i got to read my dream role with a very good scene partner#it was the “my charlie and your charlie are the same!” bit#did the world’s worst jazz squares. heard a very boring death of a salesman monologue and a very good glass menagerie monologue#for some reason the director got death of a salesman guy to read booth and glass menagerie guy to read herold#they took so long going over the sides that he had to yell BOOTH AND HEROLD GET OUT OF THE BARN

The Aftermath (1982)
"What happens when you die?"
"I don't know, son. No one does."
"It's sad to die."
"No. Death isn't sad. We all have to die. What's sad is having to go on without someone you love. Just as we have to go on now."
#the aftermath#1982#video nasty#horror imagery#steve barkett#stanley livingston#post apocalyptic film#horror film#american cinema#lynne margulies#sid haig#christopher barkett#alfie martin#forrest j. ackerman#jim danforth#linda stiegler#laura anne barkett#larry latham#carole scott#nelson ackerman#john w. morgan#incredibly dumb passion project from writer‚ director and star Barkett; he spent years getting this made‚ burning through investors and#deals whilst trying to maintain the integrity of his vision (his silly‚ silly vision). to be clear‚ this is a lot of fun to watch but not#all of that fun is intentional; the back third of this movie contains a shootout so absurdly long‚ so gratuitously violent (and with a#preposterous location change from the desert to some ruined city skyscraper tops) that it beggars belief. likewise Barkett's self insertion#as the Ultimate Action Man Hero who by the end of the film comes to resemble more of a post apocalyptic christlike figure of spiritual#salvation. it's a dumb film is what I'm saying‚ but Sid Haig is there and it all looks unreasonably good and the matte paintings are weirdl#excellent (and the fx are solid too‚ model spaceships aside). ridiculous stuff but made with clear love and self belief#in such a way that it can only end up being endearing. a pleasant surprise in my deep dive into the more obscure nasties#it's been a rough ride recently but a few more brain numbing entries like this and I'll be back on board

watched the movie knife + heart today and it was really good. if there's one thing u gotta know about me is I love love love it when sadist characters kill people in homoerotic manners. wait I don't think u understand. this guy had a dildo that turned into a knife. it was dildo... and he'd press a button(?) on it... and a blade would pop out of the tip. of the penis. dildo knife. and he killed cute men with it homoerotically. lots of hot gay porn in this movie btw. gay porn was actually incredibly central to the plot, I can't stress this enough. lots of sucking and fucking on screen and two (2) cum shots. or maybe four, depending on how you're counting them. and a gay sadist with a tortured past doing homoerotic murder!!!!!!! needless to say this film was unfortunately french.
#yann gonzalez is an incredible director. he also did ''you and the night'' which is once again a masterpiece#maybe even more of a masterpiece than knife + heart which was a bit trashy in parts (as slashers tend to be imo)

i genuinely think what makes so people uncomfortable with marnie is that the film stays with her the whole time and shows misogyny from a woman’s perspective and she’s not just victimized by a man and discarded…. she continues to occupy the center of the film and there’s no formal ending to her story really so the thought of what’s going to happen when the camera leaves is so anxiety provoking to a viewer.
when a movie is from a man’s POV it’s so much easier to feel distanced from misogyny and you can just watch like Oh that was wrong!…but i’ll move on and marnie NEVER gives you that relief or escape. NOTHING is easy in marnie and the way the man is shot so that you can’t tell exactly how you’re supposed to feel about him, whether he’s a genuine love interest or a villain forces you to realize that that’s what marnie feels too! that’s what men are! theyre human beings and you can’t just look at one in real life and go oh easy that’s a villain. that’s another person and you cant immediately tell how much harm they are capable of inflicting on you or where their limit to harming you is, if they end up having one.
#such a formally incredibly directed film in the way it makes you question your entire position as a viewer#Are you complicit? Are you a victim? YOU ARE IN MARNIE.#Hitch’s look at the camera like yes i set this all up… but YOURE the one watching it for entertainment#I UNDERSTAND THOUGH if you don’t want to watch it because of the directors misogyny though. I’m NOT trying to make anyone like it#I believe he made very crude offensive remarks about how he wanted to see the rape scene so obviously he was not coming from a good place#I can’t help finding it all so interesting though#it just seems so intentional that you’re able to identify with marnie but maybe i’m just too much of an empath

Seriously, though, if you want to get into older films, but aren’t sure where to start or feel intimidated, Ernst Lubitsch’s comedies from the 30s and 40s are really fun and accessible. I started with Trouble in Paradise (1932), but To Be or Not to Be (1942) is also great!
#honestly i haven’t found any old film I’ve watched to be NOT accessible#they are truly not scary at all - start anywhere you want#but if you like suggestions or are looking for a sign - this was my journey#this is also a good segue into silent films since Lubitsch was a prolific silent film director as well#and he worked with a ton of incredible actors throughout his career#so if you find you really like some of them - check out their other well-known films next!#not everything is gonna 100% resonate and I’ve watched old films that are downright bad#but there’s sooooooo much good stuff out there#so go check it out!!!!
