Hi!!! I’m currently on a Hazbin hotel hyper fixation and it’s not funny, but I saw your requests were open and I need to fill a void.
May I please have Vox with an overlord reader who can separate parts of their body. Like they can take off their skin and just jump around as a skeleton. Or maybe is Rosie is hungry they just take off some of their muscle and go “here it’ll grow back”. Weird I know but I thought it was cool!
Thanks and totally ok if not!!!
It's Just Regeneration. Oh.
⌐‣Vox x Overlord Reader REQ.
Want more? Check out the masterlist↩︎

AUTHOR’S NOTE: AKSKSKAKA I ADORE YOUR WRITING-
(I was 👻 anon on my alt-)
I REALLY HOPE YOU ENJOY THISSS!!! YOURE ALSO MY FIRST REQUEST—🥳 You didn't specify what format you wanted soooo I just went with a basic drabble? Idek if this qualifies as a drabble I'm still trying to figure out the differences even after being on this app for over a year… ALSO MY FIRST TIME WRITING FOR VOX SO I HOPE YOU LIKE IT!!
Tumblr media
Vox probably first met you in an Overlord meeting.
At first, he paid no mind to the new presence, assuming you were just another new face that may fall before too long.
But he was just delighted to find out you would last long enough to make a memorable impression.
Even if that memorable impression was you literally tearing off a chunk of your own flesh to pass it over to Rosie sitting next to you after the woman had quietly stated that she was growing hungry.
“Oh, it will grow back.” God damn. No wonder you've managed to last.
Since then, he's been keeping an eye out on you. With you being able to regenerate and be unfazed by losing parts of your physical body- which, you only get one of btw- he deemed you a possible strong opponent. (or a great ally)
He started to keep tabs on you, as one does. This was how he found out just how you quickly rose through the ranks.
He would be wary of you, but he wouldn't outright avoid you like he tries does to do with Alastor.
One time he was doing some stalk-scrolling, and saw a video of you literally shedding your skin and your skeleton turning toward the camera before the video cut.
His expression after seeing that was a silent eyebrow raise in quiet shock. Your little regeneration thing you had going on- he didn't know it could go to that extent.
After seeing that- there's a 50/50 chance that he’ll either bring it up in hopes of maybe blackmailing you to get you on his side (most overlords do not enjoy the fact that someone knows how they kill) or just stare at you in silence during the next overlord meeting. Kinda hoping you'd just shed your skin.
But deep down he knows the latter won't happen.
He’ll just have to chat with you himself. Who knows, maybe you'll become a valuable asset.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned something like this already, but this thought has been on my mind for quite some time;
You know who I wanted to see having a duet with Alastor (song battle style)? Velvette.
Hear me out.
There's something similar between the two songs Alastor interrupts, Stayed Gone and Hell's Greatest Dad, especially when it comes to the duality between Alastor's part and the other person's part. Something that I admit I didn't notice at first, but I saw some people commenting on.
Let's talk about Stayed Gone first: all Vox has to say is that Alastor is old and Vox is new. He uses different words every time (fossil, barely audible, his medium is getting rare...), but that's his only argument. While Alastor attacks right into Vox's insecurities. He says that Vox's content is low quality and inconsistent, he belittles Vox's power, and pokes at the wound that was Alastor refusing to "join Vox's team" (whatever that means, not important for my point here).
Tumblr media
In Hell's Greatest Dad, Lucifer talks about how he can be useful to Charlie. How he can give her Champagne fountains & caviar mountains without charging her. Alastor focuses on how his relationship to Charlie is (supposedly) very close. He says he's faithful to her, that he makes her laugh, that they have a special bond... Which is what Charlie values most.
Tumblr media
ALL THAT TO SAY that Alastor is very good at reading the room, figuring out what people are on about. Now, what other demon we see that has showed to have those same skills and has used them to her advantage in the show? That's right, Velvette.
With a SINGLE glance, she was able to identify that Carmilla was the one that killed the exorcist because of her facial expressions and body language. And then she proceeded to poke Carmilla and Zestial until one of them snapped.
Tumblr media
Also, just like I bet Alastor definitely doesn't believe a single word he's saying to Charlie in Hell's Greatest Dad, he just wanted to get under Lucifer's skin while manipulating Charlie, I highly doubt Velvette was serious about starting an actual war with the angels. She (and the Voys too, probably) had a suspicion that it had been an overlord who did it, and she went and tested the theory.
I just think it would be great to finally see someone publicly call Alastor out on all of his bullshit, and Velvette is (in my opinion, of course) a very good character for the role. Besides being very perceptive and good at reading into people's bullshit (she also does that with Vox when she is introduced btw).
Tumblr media
She likes to annoy old people, she probably has some background on Al that Vox possibly provided her while lacking the insecurities that Vox has when it comes to Alastor.
It would be very satisfying (to me at least) to see her call him a coward in his face (because he fled Adam's fight when he got injured), or that he might hate Vox but he definitely loooves the attention because he's an attention whore (bonus points if she uses this specific term just to make him uncomfortable). Or even that he's trying so hard to keep this "ominous mysterious dangerous" persona while he's 1- not that powerful, 2- starting to get emotionally attached to the "good guys".
Tumblr media
ALSO "you'd be powerless without the Vees" sir you can't convince me that 3 very powerful overlords can't beat 1 up. The Vees are powerful on their own but they're more powerful together and Vox's insecurities aside, they all know it. Alastor is alone, he might be friends with Rosie or the Hotel crew, but his pride wouldn't allow him to seek help in battle, or even emotional help.
Also 2.0 there's the fact that he's been gone for 7 years and while Velvette (and us) might have no idea what he's been up to, I bet the Vees have been growing and expanding their power while Alastor is the same since he left.
So yeah, I think she'd be so great on roasting Alastor. I don't know if I'll ever have a song battle between them but I sure think it would be interesting.

You're currently sitting through a monotonous routine overlord meeting, fidgeting with a pen in your hand as Carmilla Carmine drones on about stuff you honestly couldn't care less about. Usually, you'd have Vox by your side during these meetings, which would help things be less boring. Whether it was holding your hand under the table or making fun of the other overlords, Vox always helped entertain you. But, unfortunately, he couldn't attend; he's stuck at the Vee tower, trying to calm Valentino down after another temper tantrum.
You start to gnaw at the end of your pen subconsciously, your thoughts drifting to Vox and your plans for the day after this god-forsaken meeting. All of a sudden, a bitter taste hits your tongue. Looking down, you see pen ink splattered everywhere—on your clothes, your mouth, the desk. Forgetting where you were, you jump out of your seat and exclaim, "Shit!". The room goes silent, every overlord turning their attention from Carmilla to you. Fuck, that's embarrassing.
Carmilla raises an eyebrow, a stern expression on her face, "Everything okay, Miss L/N?". "Y-yeah," you stutter, sitting back down and avoiding eye contact, "sorry.". She sighs and focuses her attention back on the "important" subject matter. You wanted to bang your head on the desk and cry. This moment is definitely gonna replay in your head at night and keep you awake.
The buzzing of your phone vibrates in your pants pocket. You pull it out and see a notification:
Tumblr media
Hiding your phone under the table, you smile softly. At least you had something to look forward to now. 30 more minutes, you've got this. You pocket your phone once more and pretend to pay attention.
--
The meeting concludes about 20 minutes later, a bit earlier than expected. You get up out of your seat and try to ignore the stares at your ink-stained outfit from the other overlords. Vox wouldn't be here for another ten minutes, so you figured you'd just wait outside the building until he came. However, just as you are about to exit, someone grabs your forearm and yanks you back. You're met face-to-face with the radio demon, Alastor. His smile stretches ear to ear, but it doesn't fool you, Vox has told you all about him and specifically told you to avoid him at all costs. You've interacted with Alastor before. However, Vox was always present with you each time. What could he possible want from you?
The deer grabs your hand and shakes it with a violent fervor. "Why hello there, my dear," he happily greeted, "pleasure to be meeting you without that pesky picture box by your side, quite a pleasure! You take your hand back and size him up, "Uh huh, nice seeing you. Bye-". Turning on your heels, you attempt to leave. Before you can successfully exit, Alastor seizes your hand again and pulls you back to face him, "Why, how rude! Didn't your mother ever teach you that it's impolite to leave when one is speaking to you? HA HA! Anyway, speaking of the bothersome television-". "We weren't talking about Vox-" you interrupt. Alastor chimes in again, his jubilant demeanor never faltering, "Oh, but we are now! Where is your dear Vox, hm?". "Home." you state flatly. "Really?" he asks, eyes narrowing as he pries, "and why is that? Trouble in paradise? You seemed rather preoccupied during the meeting, perhaps you were dwelling on some type of argument?". "What, no-." Alastor cuts in, not bothering for an answer and just wanting to stir the pot, "Or perhaps you were". Alastor's sentence gets interrupted by the loud rumbling of doors slamming open.
In the doorway, you see Vox glaring at Alastor, teal sparks of electricity igniting from his antennae. Oh shit, he's pissed! Good luck, Alastor, because you're about to get your ass beat! Just when you think a battle is about to go down, Vox strides over to you and slings you over his shoulder, rushing you out of the building as fast as possible. "Ah!" you yelp at the unexpected move, "what are you doing?!". He doesn't answer, only exhaling roughly as he ushers you over to his limo.
A VoxTech employee opens the limo door for you both with haste. Vox throws you through the door, landing on the plush limo seats as he follows soon after. The employee closes the car door and retreats to the driver's seat after Vox gets in. “Driver!” he calls out, “put up the privacy divider and stay parked!". The driver does as he says with a weak "Yes, Mr. Vox" in response.
"Love?" you spoke quietly as he sat across from you, a menacing look on his face. "աɦǟȶ were you ɖօɨռɢ with ɦɨʍ?!" he asked, voice glitching as his anger rose. "What-? Oh, Alastor? Nothing, he just-" Vox cuts you off by yanking your arm, examining the place where Alastor grabbed you, "Why was he FᵾȻꝀƗNǤ touching you?!". "I-I don't know I tried to walk away from it," you explain, trying to get him to understand, "nothing happened, I swear!". He releases your arm and leans closer, faces inches apart from each other, "It doesn't matter if nothing happened! He still fucking touched you! Have I not made it ᵽɇɍfɇȼŧłɏ apparent that you're ʍɨռɛ, or should I have been more clear?". Before you can respond, Vox pushes down on your shoulders, sending you down on your knees on the limo floor. He kneels on the seat, one hand undoing his belt while the other pushes two fingers into your mouth, "I'm gonna make it clear to all of Hell that NØɃØĐɎ ɃᵾŦ MɆ is allowed to touch you. Got that, princess?". You speak in a muffled tone, trying to talk coherently with teal claws shoved in your mouth is nearly impossible, "Mmph, what do you mean?".
Vox chuckles grimly and removes the digits from your mouth, a trail of saliva connecting your lips and his claws. He pulls down his pants and boxers, revealing his hard, leaking cock, just inches away from your face. "What I mean is," he begins, tangling his fingers in the back of your hair, "I'm gonna claim you as mine, and everyone in this ring of hell is gonna see that...". Your eyes flicker up to him, heat pools in your core as you anticipate what's to come, "Vox..?". "Shh," he coos, pulling your head into his cock, "smile for the camera, doll.". The last thing you see before being pushed onto his dick is a red dot blinking at the top of his screen. He's recording you.
Before you can dwell on that, you suddenly find yourself being face fucked. You wrap your lips tightly around his needy cock as he thrusts into you, teal claws digging into your hair for balance. His tip graces the back of your throat with each thrust, causing you to gag. "Relax, princess, don't choke," he murmurs, releasing his tight hold on you to lovingly stroke your hair. You moan softly at his affectionate touch, sending vibrations through his length. That was enough to send him over; he thrusts in your mouth with reckless abandon as he rides out his orgasm. Hot spurts of cum shoot down your throat and you swallow every last bit of he.
He pulls out of your mouth and makes eye contact with you, his glare is possessive and dominant. The red dot is still blinking at the top of his screen, he's definitely not done with you yet. Vox pats the seat beside him, signaling for you to sit. You do as he says. The arousal between your thighs starts to become uncomfortable, begging to be dealt with, "Please, Vox...". Vox smiles sinisterly, moving over you until you're pinned down on the limousine seats, "Please, what?". "Please," you beg, looking up at him with pleading eyes, "fuck me...".
With that, a low growl escapes Vox's throat and he immediately gets to work undressing you. He doesn't even bother taking them off. Instead, he uses his claws to rip them straight off your body. "Vox! Those are my nice clothes," you reprimand. He scoffs with a playful smirk, "They were stained with ink anyways.". He removes his shirt and discards it on the floor, laying his weight fully on top of you. Pressing kisses to your neck, you feel his already full-mast erection prodding against your stomach. "Besides," he speaks between kisses, "I'll just buy you new clothes. Whatever you want, on me.". Your heart flutters at his words, how can he be so sweet and so fucking crazy at the same time?!
You wrap your legs around him, pulling him closer as his eyes rake over your naked form appreciate. He reaches out and traces a claw across your curves, stopping at your breast and squeezing the mound. "Mine," he mutters softly. His hips snap into yours in a brutal rhythm, his large cock filling your dripping cunt completely, "You're mine, understand? This body, these curves... everything belongs to me now.". "You speak between moans and gasps, "Y-Yes, fuck, just please don't stop...". Each powerful thrust sends him deeper, the sound of skin slapping skin fills the limo. Poor driver, he can probably hear everything.
He pistons into you harder, "Fuck, doll, you're taking me so well." Reaching out, he tucks a stray strand of hair behind your ear. You don't bother responding, you're too preoccupied with the immense pleasure in your core.
Moans and grunts slip out of your mouth as you get fucked senseless, your orgasm impending. Vox recognizes that you're close and grabs at your nipple, "F-fuck, you're close. Beg for it, beg for release.". The added pleasure of his touch sends you almost over the edge, desperate for release, "Pleasepleaseplease, Vox, I can't wait any longer...". He leans forward, chuckling lowly as he whispers in your ear, "Come.". Your pussy clamps down on his cock as you cum, eliciting a guttural groan from Vox's throat. His hips jerk erratically as he chases his own release.
He comes once again, spilling his seed deep inside you as wave after wave of ecstasy crashes over him. For a moment, you remained inside each other as you caught your breath. Vox withdrawals from you with a 'pop' noise, sitting up on the limo seats. You reposition to lay your head on his lap, his hands moving to play with your hair as you rest on him.
The one blinking red dot fades out, "Hey, Vox? That recording isn't going anywhere, right?". He laughs softly, running his claws through your hair gently, "No no, that ones for my personal connection.".
Liar. What you don't know is that the whole recording was a live broadcast to all of the VoxTech channels, just a 'friendly' reminder of who you belong to <3
The end :]

hi!! i loved your overlord angel dust/husk art and i commented about potentially turning it into a fic and adding your art, which you consented to. i was wondering if you had any additional ideas to make it more than a oneshot, maybe they open a casino together with mafia roots, collect souls together, etc…once again, your art was amazing!!
Thank you so much, I would love a fic about my AU (人*´∀`)。*゚+
Here are other ideas about the story:
In this AU Angel didn't worked with Valentino, he and Arackniss reconciled before Angel could sign a contract with him
That is not to say Angel wasn't doing sex work, he would take all kinds of offers, from stripping to singing gigs, just for the money
Regarding the backstory of the spider brothers I haven't really fleshed it out but here are some points of it:
They had kind of a strained relationship even though they cared for each other, because Arackniss (or Andrew as I like to think) used to put down Anthony's dreams of becoming a performer like the drag queens he liked to see (in secret) in the gay bars the Mafia used to own back in the 30s (real history btw)
He did this in hopes he would give up, leave it all behind and live a 'normal' life, out of fear their dad would disown him, or worse, kill him
It wouldn't matter anyway because both of them would die together while doing a shady work for the mob (who started the shots? They couldn't really remember)
At the beginning of their afterlife Arackniss avoided Angel with the guilt that (according to him) it was his fault his little brother got shot in the eye. (He was too far, too late, he couldn't protect his brother and now he's dead because of him)
Cause of this angel thinks his brother hates him, but they eventually encounter during a turf war that went wrong
Arackniss sees Angel surrounded and not wanting to repeat his brothers death again, he saves him this time.
They sort things out, and become closer than ever
When Arackniss figures out what angel has been doing for money they decide to start doing mob work again, they're good and people start giving their loyalty and doing contracts with them because the brothers actually care about the souls they own, deciding to learn from their father's mistakes, they respect all of their workers
furthermore, Angel gains more influence because he gave the people he met while being a sex worker, safe and living conditions; every stripper, actor, performer wanted to work with him, and with all the contracts he made, became an overlord
On the other hand, arackniss does all the shady work, sticking to the shadows, not wanting any attention. He is very prod of angel, and becomes his right hand man
Other ideas and dynamics:
Angel calls arackniss An, Andy or niss
Arackniss calls angel Angie, Anni, or Anth. (He never really liked tony, that's what his father called him)
They love each other very much but they're still siblings, they bicker and fight all the time (all their goons are used to it at this point, unimpressed by the brothers shenanigans)
Valentino develops some sort of obsession with Angel after meeting him (this brings problems)
Angel fell first, husk fell harder
They kind of had an enemies to lovers (but not really, more like a rivalry bc angel likes to annoy the cat overlord for fun)
Molly is still in heaven in this AU, arackniss was able to shield her from the family business (he couldn't with angel though, That's part of his guilt)
She died of heart disease before the brothers death
Angel is the spoilt younger sibling
I haven't really thought about how him and husk get together but they will definitely become a power couple
I like the idea Angel performs at the casino
He sings, does drag, etc. (Maybe some pornos too, just for fun)
What caught husk's attention is that Angel cared a lot for the souls he owned, he treated them like the humans they are
That's all I have for now, I will make more art about this AU later, you can use it if you like, whether as reference or inspiration for the fic (*˘︶˘*).。*♡
Ik this is more about Angel and Arackniss but I really like to focus on their story. So regarding the huskerdust you can have fun with that as I don't have a lot of ideas

Hello! I've been reading and liking your posts on Hazbin Hotel (especially the analyses of Angel - he's my favourite character!) and I wondered if I could ask you something about Huskerdust?
It's something that's been playing on my mind that I'd be interested to get another perspective on.
I ship Huskerdust, like many Hazbin fans, but I'm aware that not everyone likes it. And I've seen the arguments about Angel's initial treatment of Husk and whether it was sexual harassment and how much that ruins the Huskerdust ship and so on.
One point I see made a lot is this:
"If Angel was a straight man and Husk was a woman, everyone would agree that this behaviour was creepy and wrong and no-one would ship those two! But because Angel is gay and Husk is a man, it's fine apparently? No!"
It's been stuck in my head. And I've not seen many Huskerdust defenders addressing the claim (apart from, like, one YouTube comment I doubt I'll be able to find again).
So I'm turning to you because I enjoy reading your Angel Dust posts and you're pretty good at pointing out flaws in haters' arguments.
What would your response to that be?
OMG thank youuu!!! I also love your posts, specially how you mix Angel with Jessica Rabbit, she's gorgeous, I simp for both of them honestly 😭
Ok ok. Now, let me sigh veeeery heavily because 'anti-Angel Dust' requires a lot of patience to deal with. Huskerdust only came to be because Angel stopped his behaviour, which everyone, including the writters, know it was fucked up. Their argumentation ends there, to begin with.
(tw: SA, rape)
And this take "If Angel was a straight man / If Husk was a woman" is beyond delusional. Guys, do anyone here thinks being creepy and pushing boundaries is ok? No, right? Literally no one thinks that's ok. Angel don't think that's ok. This is why he stopped. This is why, even before opening up to Husk, he stopped the moment Husk pushed him away. It was clear to him that there was a limit he wouldn't cross. Notice how they 'dehumanize' (he's a demon spider but, you got it) Angel to "a creep", ignore his victimhood AND shamelessly wish for him to not be loved because of a mistake he committed AND fixed it, but then Huskerdust fans are the wrong ones? Angel is overly hated (and lied about btw) because 1, he's a victim, 2, he's an imperfect victim, and 3, he makes mistakes *because* of his victimhood, but idk, his haters live in some alternative reality where a gay man victim of human trafficking is well accepted and understood. Even if their hatred towards the character proves the opposite.
Angel didn't do anything he can't amend for. Do these people also think the shipp was "ruined" because Husk was an Overlord in the past? No, right? Obviously not, the AMOUNT of Angel haters that justify and ignore Husk's flaws is absurd. Husk also pushed Angel's emotional boundaries and made unnecessary rude comments about his work. Is he a monster for that? Obviously not, the moment he realized what Angel was going throught, he changed his perspective completely and that should be the case with everyone. Because yes, Angel's victimhood DOES matter, his hypersexuality is a coping mechanism, a facade, all of this matters, it matters SO MUCH MORE than Angel asking for Husk to bang him. "But it doesn't justify" boohoo Sherlock Homes, Angel stopped his behaviour. There, satisfied? Lol no because hating a victim is never enough, always a new reason (I also wish Angel would verbally apologize, that would be great too, and Huskerdust is still a slow burn, always keep that in mind). Angel is a victim of human trafficking. It's not Val being mean to him, it's Val using him as a slave. A slave. Rape. Collective rape. Sex trafficking. Sex slavery. Yall know what that means?
Here, an example and a study about how enduring abuse fucks up your brain.
https://www.bianj.org/abuse-brain-injury/
https://www.npr.org/2024/03/13/1238225255/domestic-violence-is-now-recognized-as-a-leading-cause-of-traumatic-brain-injury
Tumblr media
Imagine how Angel's brain is. Like. Angel haters, I know putting yourselfs in someone's place is not your thing, specially when you have to weaponize someone's gender identity and sexuality to make a point, but imagine having your brain deformed by years of abuse. Abuse from the person you once loved. Bad, right?
It's just that Angel's haters are unable to analyze any kind of nuance. Doing a bad thing, like pushing boundaries, doesn't make you an irredimable person. Angel, because of his hypersexuality caused by years of severe abuse and isolation, harrassed Husk. He realized he fucked up. He stopped. Husk also seem extremely guilty for his past. They're both owned by people that have pleasure in torturing others, violating every single part of their body, mental state and soul. See the difference?
Victims aren't perfect. Victims will make mistakes. Husk is also a victim (by Alastor), and he also makes mistakes... HUGE mistakes, cause you know, being a Gambling Overlord... not the best vibes. Angel's haters should really stop pretending to care about poor Husk's feefees and just admit they don't want a victim to find love and peace.
...ANYWAY. Sorry, Chrysalys, for the big ass response but I feel like I said everything I wanted to. I hope the haters didn't changed your perspective about the shipp! Because, as yourself said in your amazing analysis, they're not perfect people, but they're perfect for each other. Huskerdust is precisely what a wholesome, healthy couple is, even with two flawed people: they talk and communicate about their problems. They opened up. Understood each other. Support each other. I reblogged someone joking about how Huskerdust was able to make in one episode what Stolitz didnt to in two seasons LMAO

Oh, I'm sure you'll get to it. But not before I INFLICT ANOTHER VERGIL-CENTRIC SONG ON YOU give Overlord by lamb of god a listen :>
(I'm happy to hear you're enjoying these, btw!!)
OKAY TOOK ME A WHILE TO GET TO IT BUT I GOT TO IT
youtube
I think I liked the other one more in terms of vibes because I love sort of...melancholy BGM while this one is definitely stronger and more powerful, but this one's good too and the lyrics have SO MUCH there! So thank you for sharing, I had so much fun with this one. If you or anyone else has song recs, feel free to send them my way, I love them :)
The rest (i.e. the bit where I relate it to Vergil) will go under the cut!
Sound
I think the middle section is my favorite musically here, the part where you're screaming in the face of what is. If we're going Vergil-ness, I'd say the calm of the intro is the sort of face Vergil likes to put on. He's calm, collected, and successful. He knows what he wants and he'll achieve it carefully and with precision. He's in control.
Except, for all his careful preparations, he's not! In the end, powers beyond himself reveal the things he's overlooked and show him just how much of a pawn he is- how powerless he really is- (see: "why isn't this working!" and the Arkham stuff in DMC3) and he gets loud, angry, and wild. Eventually he collects himself again and tries to face Dante with a level head- does, to a point- but by that point both Dante and the audience have seen him lose it and it doesn't matter how much he may act cool. We know otherwise. We've seen the outburst. We know what happens when he's pushed to his limits and the walls fall down.
Lyrics
You've never proved me anything but right You hold no surprises, consistency defined An underwhelming sense of predictability A dull sideways slide into mediocrity
Going through lyrics now, Verse 1 could be how Vergil sees Dante. Dante clings to his humanity and throws fits as he's always done, failing to match Vergil (at Vergil Battle 1) and thus sliding into mediocrity as he begins to lose rather than tying Vergil as he did when they were children. I like to read DMC3 Vergil as pitying Dante to a point. Oh, how much better he could've been. It's a shame he insists upon carrying on as he does.
Another day! Spent buried in the shadow of your doubt Always the same! But still, you refuse to figure out... Always the same!
The refrain also fits into this, though from a lens of frustration rather than just pity. Vergil has spent most of his life alone, and though he seems to be content with walking his own road, he isn't. We see him at his happiest while fighting Dante (just like how in DMC5, we see Dante at his happiest while fighting (with) Vergil), while the rest of the time he's in either a neutral or negative state. If Dante would only realize, if he'd only accept the truth and recognize the superiority of and intelligence in leaning into their demonic heritage, then it would be better for the both of them. Dante would be safe and Vergil wouldn't be alone. But Dante insists upon clinging to his humanity as he always has (always the same), refusing to acknowledge the truth right in front of him (that demons are superior/power is necessary to protect that which is important to you | but still, you refuse to figure out). And as time goes on, this becomes increasingly frustrating to Vergil who knows what they could have, would Dante only listen to what Vergil had to say and see things as Vergil does, but can't seem to get Dante on his side.
The refrain could also be seen as Vergil reflecting on himself. Frustration at hesitation. At what he could have, were he only to let go and... well. There are options there!
Is it his doubt holding him back from fully giving into demonic desire? Is it his doubt that has him holding back from humanity, dooming himself to suffering? It could be the Urizen side of things, mocking Vergil for sitting in the doubt and clinging to the humanity that's killing him out of either misplaced appreciation for something that only hurts them, or out of some sort of nostalgia, or out of some hesitation to do that which must be done to save them. It could be the V side of things, berating Vergil for ignoring the truth in front of him that there is strength in humanity. All of the above. I like reading Vergil both as someone who refuses to entertain any notions of doing wrong and also as someone who ends up doubting himself a lot, even if he tries to ignore it. Though I usually go for the former being more DMC3 Vergil, and the latter more post-DMC5 Vergil, I could see both at any point.
You will destroy you Distorted, tore yourself in two Your will absorbs you You can't ignore you anymore
I mean. It's obvious, right? Perfect. Vergil was his own destruction. I think I mentioned this in the other post about this too. It was his own pride that had him refusing Dante's help and falling into Hell, his own pride that had him charging into a losing battle, his own pride and desperation that had him using the Yamato to split himself in two hoping it would save at least a part of him, and so on. Vergil proved his own destruction. He was not his own salvation. He was a part of his own salvation, but only a part. Dante and Nero were the agents of his salvation, pushed on by that piece of himself that was still able to love himself and get the help Vergil had refused.
And small tangent- yes I read V as the side of Vergil that loved himself. Also oops I'm jumping around in tenses again, sorry!
But more on that: V is the one who tried to recreate Vergil. Urizen had no interest in that. V is the one who sought out the things that could help Vergil. Urizen discarded them (something he did not do with Trish and Lady, who he saw use in. Urizen instead saw a thing he felt emotions for and swatted him away, not even bothering to search because it would be antithetical to his goal of lone superiority and domination. Emotions hold you back. Ties and relationships hold you back. Such things cannot be used as tools, and are better of dead and gone.). Urizen wants power for his own sake, while V- who definitely still wanted power/strength, don't get me wrong, he's no saint- showed remorse and care for others. He accepted help from others. V saw that Vergil wanted to be saved and allowed himself to be saved. While both V and Urizen indulged in things Vergil wanted, where Urizen indulged in the thing Vergil wanted loudly and had actually sought out (power), V indulged in the quiet desires Vergil had (to be loved, to be saved) but had never allowed himself. And that, I think, is a much stronger show of love. Self love. Man I love V and Urizen and Vergil's whole shebang.
OKAY NOT SO SMALL TANGENT OVER WITH (and a return to present tense!). Yeah Vergil end up so invested in that which he desires that he becomes blind to everything else and it proves his ruin. He can't ignore the folly of his actions once they consume him. It's no longer other people bearing the brunt of his actions (like the people around the Temen-ni-gru); it's himself.
An entitled declaration of distress Strife, misery, and the pursuit of unhappiness Endless complaining, no accountability The reek of privilege and weightless tragedy!
This one is yet again both something that describes how Vergil sees Dante, and something that could apply to Vergil himself.
For the Vergil on Dante bit: this is for both DMC3 and DMC5 Vergil. Urizen has the line in his fight: "How… How are you so powerful!? You never lost anything!" which I think speaks to the fact that Vergil sees himself as the bearer of a heavy legacy and much suffering, while he buys the face/mask Dante puts on and thinks Dante to be some happy-go-lucky guy who's breezed through life relatively unscathed. "Endless complaining, no accountability"- Dante is someone who acts like he has some big cross to bear despite Vergil being the one who, as the elder son of Sparda and inheritor of his legacy, must bear it. "The reek of privilege and weightless tragedy"- Dante might have been left an orphan too, but Eva chose him, which both is a privilege and means the tragedy Dante dealt with wasn't nearly so bad, because at least when he was made an orphan Dante still knew he was loved where Vergil was abandoned. Dante has never lost anything. For all he gripes, for all he acts as though his life sucks and it's a chore to clean up after Vergil's messes, he has never felt true suffering. ...Or so Vergil thinks. We know better.
I've been typing for a while so I'm going to try to speed things up by just saying you could read this as Vergil berating himself. Saying he shouldn't be sad about anything because he can persevere. Nothing he's been through matters enough to stop him. He's still alive, isn't he? That emotional pain is a human weakness. He needs to move on. Hanging onto such things will only slow him down.
Cry wolf on your silken pillow Clipped wings beneath a crooked halo A perfect child who never looks at the mirror Right in your face, but not any clearer A problem hidden in plain view It's staring right back at you!
This one is Vergil to himself. I'd like to think that the progression of this song sort of mirrors Vergil's relationship with himself, in that he often blames Dante for things that Vergil has caused himself, or in that he berates Dante for having faults that Vergil also has, because it's easier to pretend that everything terrible that belongs to another person. Dante is the failure, not Vergil. Dante's the one weakened by human emotion, not Vergil. Dante's the one whining about his situation, not Vergil. Dante's the one hurting himself with the way he carries on, not Vergil.
But no, it is Vergil. Sure, Vergil is not doing the same things that Dante is doing- or not doing them in the same way- but that doesn't mean he's not doing other harmful things. Sure his life has not followed the same path as Dante's, but that doesn't mean his life path has been better. Vergil has suffered, Vergil has whined, Vergil has lost, and despite all attempts to distance himself from his humanity he is a slave to it to. (And, as we see in DMC5, it makes him stronger, even though he believes it to be killing him. It's the abandonment of his humanity that leads to both his downfall and his salvation. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy of refusing to help it and watching as it fails, then blaming its failure on its inherent weaknesses rather than your treatment of it that lead to said failures.)
Here though? "Cry wolf on your silken pillow." Make up problems to be upset about, and be upset about them from your place of privilege. Yes, Vergil has suffered, but despite his loss he managed to find himself in DMC3- only to throw himself down a path that would lead to his own destruction. He acts as if he is alone and he alone must bear the cross, but Dante's there too and would help if the two would only stop to see eye to eye.
"Clipped wings beneath a broken halo." As a union between humanity and demonkind, Vergil had so much room to be something, yet he didn't live up to the potential he could've had because he damned himself instead. And though the halo- the idyllic life- may have been broken by Mundus' attack, it's Vergil who clipped his own wings to fit the idea he had of himself. As I've said many times before and will say again, in the end it is Vergil who damned himself. Vergil who was his own downfall. It was Vergil who leaned into the suffering and pain and loss he'd been dealt and decided to surrender himself to a fate he could've avoided had he only sought another way out.
Then " A perfect child who never looks at the mirror / Right in your face, but not any clearer / A problem hidden in plain view / It's staring right back at you!" all goes into how Vergil is enforcing his own suffering but refuses to acknowledge it. Doesn't look into the mirror both in the sense of looking at his own suffering and at the suffering of his mirror image Dante. He has all the tools to see what he's doing but just doesn't want to , because acknowledging his faults would mean acknowledging he's wrong and havign to try to find anotehr way, but he's gone too far and lived too long on the path he's on and can't afford to go another way (can't bear the pain of admitting his faults. Even in DMC5 he runs away the second he has the chance. Yes, he's doing the world a service by cutting down the Qliphoth, but it's also a convenient excuse to not have to deal with the consequences of his own actions (Nero and the destruction of the human world)).
All the world's a stage But you are the only player A black hole in the center of the universe A dark cloud of despair! Caught in an endless rut A crisis without solution Someone should stitch your mouth shut And solve your fucking problem Strife, another day And misery Always the same Strife, another day And misery Always the same Always the same
Okay you can probably tell I'm getting tired here so sorry it's shorter but the eepies have come and I'm not going to win this battle.
But! First two lines are about how Vergil always goes it alone. The whole world is available for him yet he insists upon the lonely road. Then the rest I think are about enforcing the road Vergil's on, or about reassuring himself it's the correct path. Nothing good comes from him, he should bear his cross alone, in silence, because he only brings suffering to those around him (I love thinking about scenarios where Vergil was pursued much more often/hotly than Dante in their childhood, basically leaving a trail of bodies of those who might've tried to help Vergil, both reinforcing his belief that humanity is weak and powerless and also making it so he had no one and thought it best to isolate himself so he couldn't be hurt again). It's always the same- strife and misery. Pain and suffering. Loss and failure. For all he's tried and tried, Vergil has never won that which he wanted to. Even when he raised the Temen-ni-gru, even when he ate the fruit of the Qliphoth, he still couldn't beat Dante. He has lost over and over. It's always the same.
You will destroy you Distorted, tore yourself in two Your will absorbs you You can't ignore you anymore Anymore Anymore Anymore Anymore! Anymore!
Vergil is his own downfall. Vergil will always be his own downfall. And he will never be able to get away from that. Ever.

Can't concentrate because idk why but right now I feel VERY enthusiastic about helluva boss. So i decided to yeah, come here to maybe bother you in your askbox so I can get it all out.
But like.
Stolitz. The main ship.
You could say that Blitzø and Stolas are the two main characters and you wouldn't be quite wrong. Those two losers are the ones that have most of the fandom emotionally attached because. Because. Just. Imps, in the show, are hell's lowest class. Them there are the Sinners (people who died and now are in hell), then there are the Overlords (powerful Sinners because they either did something terribly bad on earth or I think some of them were born in hell?), then the nobility, like princes, dukes of hell. And then Lucifer who is the king. Ok so.
Blitzø is an imp. Hell's lowest. Stolas is a prince. Hell's nobility. They both met as kids because the day of his tenth birthday, Stolas' father told him about his arranged marriage, Stolas was sad and so his father "bought" Blitzø for an afternoon. Blitzø's father told him to steal anything valuable from Stolas' house because nobility. So Blitzø tricks Stolas into helping home steal. And they both enjoy themselves while doing it. When it's all done, Blitzø could have left, but he didn't because he had a good time.
It seems that from that moment, Stolas had some sort of crush on Blitzø.
Then, years later, Blitzø wants to make his own business: killing people that haven't died yet, being hired by hell's Sinners. But in order to go to Earth, he needs a portal, a spell. And, one of the places where he can find something to go to Earth is in a book Stolas owns.
So. Blitzø happens to decide to steal the book the same day of Stolas'wedding anniversary. His wife (who doesn't love him, and apparently is abusive towards him) is laughing at him, ridicules him in from of the guests. So Stolas drinks fucking absinthe, and while he's drinking, the guards bring Blitzø to him because he tried to break in.
Strong alcohol leads to bad decisions so somehow they end up in Stolas' room, Stolas flirting with Blitzø and Blitzø playing along because he wants the book that desperately. And kaboom they end up fucking. Next morning Blitzø leaves with the book, fucking crashes Stolas'wife with cake and so she knows of the infidelity.
So. After some time, Stolas'proposes that Blitzø can stay with the book on the condition that once a month he fucks him. But it's like nonsense because in the same book there's a spell that can grant free access to Earth without the necessity of the book so Stolas could have easily made that. But he didn't because apparently he enjoyed himself too much with Blitzø.
Their emotions to one another are a MESS. Specially considering both have daddy issues. Stolas sees Blitzø as an equal, but hell's social system is stuck into his head no matter how hard he tries. And Blitzø has severe inferiority complex, thinking of Stolas as very, very above him socially. And also, all previous romantic relationships Blitzø had were apparently a failure so he craves love but fears attachment.
So yeah. It's all a MESS. But it's a mess worth watching.
thank you for listening to my ted talk.
I have no idea of what that is, but trust be im loving to read all this my dearest
first i loved this universe???? ngl this whole thing rlly caught my attention wdym the nobility of hell??

Hole goblin here! I'll make the Overlord lol
So I decided I should make the overlord that holds Sam's soul! So here he is!
Silas is the overlord that holds Sam's soul
He's cruel and manipulative and he's greed for power
He's appearance resembles a tiger shark He's not that muscular but not that thin either. He has fin like gills at the end of he's head that acts as he's ears. He's face is humanoid and all eyes have no other facial appearances. He has around 25 eyes.
He's color scheme is Blue at he's head and gills having a green tint at the end. He's arms are purple until it goes up and slowly turns blue. He's legs is also the same. He's body is filled with black stripes.
He's abilities consist of:
The ability to add eyes in any surface Ex. Walls, Roofs ,On other demons and more but he can only create depending on how many eyes he currently has. Every time he adds an eye on something an eye on he's face disappears. It's like a security camera btw. He can see and hear from the eyes he uses.
He can possess the demon he placed one of he's eyes on temporarily and the demon wouldn't notice except for a slight tingle. Around 2-5 minutes.
He can't use all he's eyes all at once he can only use one at a time and he loses more of he's sight the more eyes he uses it gives him a slightly blurry vision on the eye he used.
I'll say more after figuring out what I should add next lol
He uses Sam to know more about the hazbin hotel after figuring out he's staying there. He placed an eye on he's back without him knowing. Remember when I said Sam disappears randomly? That's when he added the eye. He hid the eye in one of Sam's black spots. Since if Sam knew from the start if he knew he'll avoid the hazbin hotel like the plague immediately after knowing. Silas knows this.
Because of Sam he knew Vox was pregnant before they could announce it. He knows a lot about Sam's friends since you know Sam listens to he's friends rant. He even possesses Sam and questions he's friends acting like Sam. It backfired on Sam. He knows the joy Sam has whenever he's around he's friends.
(Sam's eye color is Blue ,Green ,Purple and Black because he's eyes are the color scheme of the overlord btw.)
Silas might even go after Zephyr since he's gotten the interest of Sable the one protecting the daughter of The Radio and Media demon to upset her. He might even take him to add one of he's eyes on him too maybe even force him into a contract. He might make him to stay shut about him. If that's okay with Nyx tho <3
I'll say more about him lol <3
Yooo! I love a cruel villain! What's Silas' end game? What's he hoping to achieve?

Hi there! New fan here! So I've seen you back during early FNF days but never paid much attention to anything outside my private circle of friends. I regret this. I regret this so much. Why? Because just the other day a friend and fellow fan (who unlike me has been a fan since early FNF days) finally convinced me to give your works a try after a month of them rambling about your works and cast. They suggested your MFD series since that one is their favorite out of your works and also the one that is more or less still the same aside from a few minor details that, to quote friend, "you wouldn't even know these bits have been retconned unless you been following Punk's social medias".
Anyway gave the story a read and holy fiddlesticks how the heck did I not read your works sooner?? It was an enjoyable read, and I'll regret not giving it a read sooner.
Just started reading the sequel story to your first MFD story and goddammit I'm so glad I'm in the privacy of my own room right now because this one bit here made me crackle silly.
"Online sites are all about voodoo shit and churches and.. Friggin’ weird porno stuff! Not even the GOOD stuff! You guys make a waaaay better porno.” Keith was too depressed to notice Amelia’s face turning red, nor Pico spitting out the slightly pink milk.
Keith is such a gem and Pico and Amelia are so fortunate to have him.
Oh and one last thing before I resume my reading but a friend - the same one who introduced me to your works actually - decided to troll me by sending me a "spoiler" for a future chapter. By that, I mean they send me that one artwork of the what-if scenario of the MFD verse Zardy meeting Otis you made awhile back as well as giving a follow-up of "oh and btw there isn't artwork for this bit yet but Punk said Zardy later paid Heaven a visit and accidentally gave poor Babi a massive spook". I actually believed them at first but then found out a few minutes ago from another friend that one) they were trolling and two) the artwork of MFD Zardy's and Otis's meeting was only a what-if scenario and not canon sadly. They had informed me the bit with Zardy giving Heaven a little uninvited visit and, to quote friend, "making all the folks there shit their pants" will be a thing but it won't happen until after the story.
SPEAKING OF ZARDY, CAN I JUST SAY THAT I FIND IT HILARIOUS THAT ZARDY IS CANONICALLY CONSIDERED A MYTH WITHIN THE MFD SERIES? THE FACT THAT YOU CONFIRMED THAT OTIS AND PICO ARE AMONG THE ONES WHO BELIEVED HIM TO NOT BE REAL MAKES THIS EVEN FUNNIER AND ALMOST WISH THAT WHAT-IF SCENARIO WAS CANON IF ONLY FOR OTIS'S REACTION TO REALIZING THE MYTHICAL OVERLORD DEMON HE HAS HEARD ABOUT ALL HIS LIFE GROWING - A BEING HE THOUGHT NOTHING MORE THAN SOME BOOGEYMAN STORY TO SCARE YOUNG ANGELS INTO BEING GOOD - WAS NOT ONLY REAL BUT ALSO FRIENDS WITH ONE OF THE DEMONS HE KIDNAPPED.
I'M GLAD IT'S NOT CANON BECAUSE POOR OTIS BUT DAMN I'D STILL ALMOST WISH IT WAS CANON BECAUSE I WOULD SO LOVE TO READ HOW THAT SCENARIO WOULD'VE GONE DOWN. ESPECIALLY PICO'S REACTION. GOD THAT WOULD BE SO FUNNY YET TERRIFYING. FUNNY FOR ME, TERRIFYING FOR PICO I MEAN. LIKE WOW, THIS MISSION REALLY WENT FROM 'RESCUING KEITH AND AMELIA AND TRYING TO GET ANSWERS OUTTA OTIS' TO 'TRYING TO SAVE OTIS FROM A BEING HE THOUGHT WAS NOTHING MORE THAN SOME MADE-UP BOOGEYMAN FIGURE USED TO SCARE LITTLE ANGELS INTO BEING GOOD'. THANK GOD THIS SCENARIO AIN'T CANON CUZ POOR PICO DIDN'T NEED THE EXTRA HEART ATTACK HERE LMAO.
AJDLFLAJSLQ
I TOOK TOO LONG ANSWER THIS I'M SORRYYY
I'm so happy you're enjoying the series! I definitely have to get back into updating it (progress has been slow cuz brain friggin sucks at focusing)
The sequel is gonna be really good, I'm trying to work on my focus on it better. But I'm still really happy you're enjoying it!☆

Charmed 03x03 Spoiler Review!!!!
Tumblr media
What was that? No really. I hope the whole me just complimenting the entertainment value of an episode but not seeing value in its place in lore doesnt become the norm from here on out. Entertainment wise it was a solid 8/10. Its place overall in the series as far as lore building or cannon compliant id say 5/10.
So let's start with the dislikes and just get them out of the way.
DISLIKES
1. Abigael's demon face
Okay so I could be wrong but, my understanding is that abigael's demon side was locked away in that figure. Which is why she hasn't (in the entire season 2) had a full body demon form like Parker and her dad. I actually like the demon face as far as design goes it sort of -but not entirely- reminds me of one of the demons in the OG Charmed. What I dont understand is that, if Abigael was at some point Overlord of the Demon world and before then she was working exclusively with demons, how the hell did she do this without every needing to show her demon face???
I guess maybe they only needed blood (see season 2 episode 2) but come on. Also, if apparently you can lock away your demon form, why the hell didn't Parker find that out? Granted in season 1 his daddy was using the fact his demon side was eating at him as leverage, so not like he was going to tell him about it, but Parker literally left season 1 to find a way to tame that side of him and get away from demons you'd think he would have asked one witch who might have known this between then and when he became overlord.
Also, does Macy then have a demon face? He eyes have gone black (season 1) and she had her demon powers. Apparently demon powers and demon face aren't tied together if Abi can have one without the other, so who knows.
They better at least go hard with Abby as a villian or else I am going to be unsatisfied. Charmed has been lacking in the villian department since season 1. The writing needs improvement.
2. Jimmy's Anti climatic and non sensical death.
Okay, so the fight scene was amazing and RE is like the best actor ever, but this whole thing made zero sense. For like so many reasons:
1. It was sloppy lore wise
So the established (poorly established btw) rule was that thier lives were tied together at a magical and molecular level. Magic could put them together not sever them. They established that a little after mid season. The other rule was that they could not kill each other, but others could kill them. Death by Suicide apparently would kill them both which now that they ended Jimmy like this makes that whole situation in episode 12 totally unnecessary and even more gross than it was (we do not support the indulgence of romanticizing suicide on this blog).
They literally just delt with all the tangling up they did with the Jimmy and Harry connection by having Jimmy say "well now that there is no magic we arent tied together anymore". Which again makes no sense since the before they made a deal about them being molecularlly tied hence the dna helix when macy creates a potion to merge them.
Also why was that a thing if it was never going to be used?
On top of that, they bond is apparently gone but apparently Jimmy and Harry are still missing halves because Jimmy didn't just turn human and die. He vanishes in white smoke. Which is different, but not different since smoke is smoke and Harry didn't vanish in white (to our knowledge) when he was stabbed the first time.
2. It was unnecessary story wise. Especially if by some want they decide to write Jimmy back in.
Why bother sending Jimmy away for an episode if you are going to kill him off in the next?. He was away, safe and happy, was it necessary to bring him back to die?
Yes I get it magic was wearing off so apparently his memories came back. But was it necessary to make it a thing where Jimmy with his memories just wants to come back and kill. Especially when the whole season 2 was about him wanting to be free. Wanting to live and not be a servant.
3. Shallow sisterhood
Okay so I am going to be careful in how I say this, but season 1 (for all its flaws) was the best at writing the sisters bonding. At having them on individual archs but still connected and growing with each other.
Season 2 had them pretty much seperate from each other and that was fine as I understood it to be leading to an eventual come back and uniting.
.... except it really didn't. There is a pattern of seperate jouneys but not the same connected feel of season 1, and then some big declaration of sisterhood, but not true reunion. I assume it is just the writing. So maybe these writer just aren't able to write the same sort of sisterhood which season 1 had. Sad, but if that is the case it's just something to expect here on out. I am curious if the destruction of the sisterhood was that they have to be apart now (convenient physical distancing wise) or if next episode it will be forgotten as a side effect that only lasted the initial moments afterwards.
LIKES
1. Maggie's growth
For my complaints about shallow sisterhood writing and how romances and villians are handled, Maggie's storylines this season have been 100% amazing. And looking at the whole series it feels solid.
Maggie starts off the series very much not into magic unless she can get some personal gain from it whether its a magical glamorous party or some fantasy time with a magic orb. She very much wants a normal party girl life although by the end of season 1 she seems to accept some responsibility to the magical world. Season 2 sort of unraveled that in the beginning as Maggie seemed not accepting of her role in the magical world as she was the last episode of season 1. But she is shown to be the same party girl with a lot of heart. Every episode she grows up until she no longer likes the person she was, and I love how Jordan tells her that growing up isn't about moving on and hating who you used to be but living who you are now (I swoon with him). Thats very Maggie season 2 arch confronting old self and ideas and trying to grow up. She is and she does but not in the ways that she think. When she "tries" to grow up she is actually making bad decisions or pushing down her trauma and pain, when she allows herself to just be, she is at her best. I love it.
2. Hacy
It was all angst and indulgent but still I love anytime a couple can still be going through a tough time but not make unnecessary drama. Macy wasn't being unrealistic or dramatic thinking about her being the one to die, and Harry wasn't being unrealistically bratty about the situation. They were as calm as could possibly be in that situation and he respected her choice although hoping it wouldn't happen. I appreciate it.
3. Mel
So season 2 was so bad for mel writing wise, for some reason the writers have trouble developing Mel outside of other characters considering her most significant and well written character development moments are either in relation to Abby or to Maggie and Ray.
But I liked seeing some of the old mel. The Mel willing to do whatever to save others and her family. Mel as an activist (confident and self assured) is the best Mel. I feel like season 2 didn't have that same Mel and I like the glimpse of her this last episode.

The interesting question is what a "soul" even is - it's essentially a notion that we humans (and in the context of Mass Effect, other organic species) have, something that everyone has an idea of, but no one can precisely define. Since it's such a diffuse concept, I can imagine the Geth were indeed wondering what it was in the beginning, and if they had it themselves.
However, at some point, I think they figured out the definition of the word is essentially "something every being must possess to be considered alive". At the beginning, the Quarians probably laughed the questions off, thinking the Geth merely parroted words they heard elsewhere without understanding what they meant. However, when they didn't stop, the Quarians got wary, wondering if there might be something more to it. According to Legion, the Quarians even reprogrammed them once before the all-out war started. (Assuming this was something like a general factory reset, it would've had a major impact on the Geth.) However, as we know, they ended up asking the same questions again, returning to their previous conclusions without fail.
It appears that the Geth also phrased their question in different ways: In ME1, Tali tells you about how a Geth asked its Quarian overseer the questions "Am I alive? Why am I here? What is my purpose?" Since this is Tali's - in other words, the Quarians' - perspective on things, the questions are probably not accurate word for word, as the Geth usually refer to themselves as "we" (not accounting for the fact that BioWare probably hadn't figured out how Geth were supposed to talk yet). However, the fact that the story has been passed down like this gives me the impression that something like this really happened - and if it did, it would be kind of curious, since the questions seem entirely nonsensical coming from the Geth.
The Geth technically know they're not alive by a biological definition, they know what their purpose is, so why would they be even asking these things? The only plausible explanation I can think of is that they were asking the Quarians for their opinion - and the way the questions are phrased, it sounds like they need the Quarians' approval for their existence to have a purpose. (To me, this is probably the best proof that the Geth are indeed sentient; it's easy to mistake this desire to please as part of their programming, but that the Quarians have to appreciate them in return was never part of it. It may have grown naturally out of the Geth's programming, but it's something they decided on themselves.)
I don't think Legion taunting people was intentional on their part. The Shadow Broker files where this is from state that Legion immediately accepted an account ban after being accused of "unsportsmanlike behavior". To me, this suggests that Legion most likely just imitated something he saw other players doing, without fully grasping what the gesture actually means. (I kinda summarized my thoughts on this here.)
Also, I'd like to point out that the thing about the video games is post-Chris L'Etoile era writing. (I think it's fair to assume L'Etoile didn't have any influence on the DLCs; if he did, Overlord and Arrival probably wouldn't exist the way they do.) Despite this, I think Legion being a hardcore gamer is actually a great addition. I legitimately think gaming would be a great opportunity for the Geth to put their organic behavior models to the test - you can only do so much by observing, but if you want to know if the "strategy" you devised for interaction actually works, there's no other way than to try it. Video games would be an ideal environment for that, since it allows Legion to have direct contact with organics, without them seeing who - or what - they are. (It's actually kind of sad; it's really the only "safe" way for Legion to interact with organics, without the immediate risk of them running away in fear or shooting at them.)
Btw, I did some more research, and according to some other sources, Chris L'Etoile actually left one year later, in August 2009. (However, again, I have no way to confirm if this information is accurate, as this is exclusively from chat forums and all the links to primary sources I found are dead.) If this was the case, that would make the time window to add in any dialogue after he left considerably smaller.
However, in his comment about his original vision for the Reapers (the one I previously shared with you), L'Etoile said "I had written more hard science into EDIs dialogue here" and "it seems all that was cut out or rewritten after I left", meaning that he already had her dialogue fully written out, and they actively went back and rewrote it after the changes to the lore of the Reapers were decided on. In fact, given that "there was nothing about the Reapers turning people into goo" according to L'Etoile, they still would've had to animate the entire sequence with the crew members trapped in the pods. Granted, they probably had most of their resources focused on the Suicide Mission during the final months of development, but we do know of one case where Patrick Weekes had to step in to rewrite the dialogue wheel option for Thane's romance. (When I played it, I felt like it was extremely crass and unfitting, given that Thane just talked about how his wife died; I suppose that at least explains that, but honestly, wouldn't "I love you, Thane" have been enough to get the message across?)
This makes me wonder if something similar might have happened for Samara, with her writer already having left the project so someone else had to step in, and that's how her "okay" came to be. (In this list, Brian Kindregan is credited as her writer, with Patrick Weekes as an additional writer; in fact, many ME2 characters have at least one secondary writer, a role that usually falls to Patrick Weekes, Mac Walters, or Luke Kristjanson. I wonder if this is because they acted as substitute writers for the main ones.) Again, there's no way to know for sure, but I'd be interested in checking out that clip with Samara if you happen to find it again.
Both Legion and Thane have only Chris L'Etoile credited as a writer, but that doesn't mean the possibility of someone writing additional lines for them is completely out of the picture. At the very least, the generic lines during the DLCs couldn't have been written by L'Etoile (I remember Legion had some, so the same would go for Thane as well). Regarding the slight inconsistencies in Legion's dialogue on the Collector Ship, I'm wondering if this might due to L'Etoile having pre-written the lines, but no longer being there to give directions. Idk if the character's writers were always present during the recording sessions, but I remember an interview with D.C. Douglas I read on DeviantArt (sadly, I wasn't able to find it again) where D.C. praised Legion's writer and remarked about them being different due to lacking organic emotions/hormones (which sounded very reminiscent of L'Etoile's comments), so I assume they at least talked to each other once.
As for the line during Jacob's loyalty mission, it's interesting to note that both Patrick Weekes and Mac Walters wrote characters (Mordin and Wrex, respectively) who have quotes about conflict being essential progress, which is similar in theme to Legion's line. (Of course, Mordin and Wrex are entirely different characters.) Luke Kristjanson is credited as Jacob's writer, so it's natural to assume he wrote his loyalty mission as well (at least that's what I know of Chris L'Etoile and the loyalty missions of Thane/Legion). So, if - keyword: if - someone other than L'Etoile wrote the line, I would suspect it was one of those three.
However, regardless of who wrote the line, that changes nothing about its contents. Since Legion isn't known for making ambiguous allusions, the only way to interpret this is as a genuine statement. That, however, would make it the only statement by Legion that I cannot confirm - all of Legion's other observations I can either confirm from my own experience, or I at least understood where they were coming from. So, I took my time to do some research (which is why it took me so long to respond) to check whether there is any truth to the claim of anger increasing creativity. And since the first step in checking whether a statement is true or false is to understand what's actually said, I started by examining the definition of the term "creativity" - which, as it turns out, isn't all that easy to pin down.
The most common definition you will find of "creativity" and what it means to most people is "the ability to create something new". This creation can either be material (such as a piece of art or an invention) or immaterial (such as music or a new solution to a problem). However, creating something and creating something new aren't necessarily the same thing; you can create something without it being novel (e.g. replicate a painting), and coming up with something new doesn't mean it has to be productive in some kind. At the same time, creativity has to involve creating something, regardless whether it's material or immaterial - so, it's not enough to just have an idea, you also have to realize it. Also, if you wanted to treat "creativity" as synonymous with "originality", that would mean every time something new happens or something is created, it would automatically be creative. Since new things can be created without human influence (stars create new elements by nucleosynthesis, but they don't do so consciously), this doesn't make much sense. So, creativity has to involve an active, conscious process. (This also means just because someone does something new or unusual, it's not inherently creative, as they might do it without consciously thinking about it.) Some definitions of creativity I've seen also require a person to not only have original ideas, but also for these ideas to be beneficial or useful in some kind.
So, for the purpose of this analysis, I'm going with creativity as "the conscious process of creating or devising something that is original as well as productive and/or beneficial".
Now, with this in mind, the question is: Does anger improve these qualities in humans? The answer to which would be... contingently, if at all.
One thing anger certainly does is lowering inhibitions, so people are more willing to try things they wouldn't do normally. I'd like to point out, however, that these ideas may have already been there before (albeit in a suppressed form), and anger is just "the straw that breaks the camel's back" that makes people act on them (like finally speaking your mind what you really think about a person that has been annoying you the whole time).
As for productiveness, however... I... couldn't find a lot on that. There is one study where they asked participants in different emotional states to brainstorm ideas about how to preserve the environment, and those that were angry tended to come up with more original ideas. (I personally found it to be lacking a bit in details though; for instance, I couldn't find any information about what they did to make the subject group angry, or whether their ideas were even useful/feasible. Also, it would reduce creativity to just coming up with original ideas, notwithstanding whether they're actually realized.) Still, they also concluded that anger only gives a short, initial boost to creativity - after some time, it will dissipate.
If I may give my own opinion on this, I think this is because anger essentially releases a lot of energy - once that energy is depleted, however, any effect it has wears off. I would also like to add that the energy resulting from anger can be released in different ways (I suppose it's comparable to energy conversion in physics; energy can be released in many different ways such as movement, heat, or electricity). So, the energy arising from anger could potentially be directed towards improving/changing the circumstances that caused it, fostering creativity. However, at the same time, I wouldn't call a toddler destroying their toys in a temper tantrum creative.
So, anger can increase creativity - however, the effect is way too unreliable and dependent on circumstances to formulate it as a general rule. (And even if we're going to assume it does, it would have to be in a smaller dose than blind rage.)
Still, there is no clear consensus on what "creativity" even is. Apparently, the term "malevolent creativity" exists in psychology for the action of "coming up with new methods of causing harm to others". I've found one study about it where they recorded how many original, useful (as in "useful for harming others") ideas the participants had for the use of a brick and a shoe, and supposedly, people with low social intelligence (as in having difficulty understanding/identifying emotions in yourself and others) came up with more "malevolently creative" uses. They also claimed to have found out that open-minded and extroverted people are more creative overall.
Now, I have multiple issues with this - once again, the only thing they evaluated were the ideas themselves, not the actual realization. Granted, given the destructive nature of the ideas, putting them into action would most likely be problematic, but unless you want to define creativity as the mere act of coming up with new ideas/solutions (which is yet another possible definition), this would only cover one half of the creative process.
While they did rate the ideas based on originality and "usefulness", their ultimate purpose remains a destructive one, which feels like an oxymoron considering that the term "creative" describes a constructive process. If you ask me, the term "malevolent creativity" is poorly chosen - personally, I would much rather use destructivity/destructiveness to describe it. Also, it "malevolent creativity" only denotes the intention behind it; I suppose it's not technically impossible to have bad intentions and still come up with something useful/constructive along the way; vice versa, it's not impossible for someone to make an invention with good intentions which is then used to cause harm to others (apparently, the term for that is "negative creativity", as unintentionally causing harm to others). I should probably mention, however, that the term "useful" is highly subjective as well; for example, if a general devises an effective strategy against the opposing army, it may be beneficial to the general's faction, but from the perspective of their opponents, the opposite would be the case.
Another problem I have with this (and you might very well call this a personal matter) is that you may come to the conclusion that autistic people are low-key destructive rowdies, since they commonly have trouble identifying emotions in others. (Actually, the assumption that autistic people "have no empathy" is only partially true: Recent research about the topic suggests that people with autism have trouble with cognitive empathy - as in understanding what others are thinking - but their emotional empathy is not impacted by this; so, if you tell an autistic person upfront what you are feeling, they can actually relate to it. It's the other way around for psychopaths: Psychopaths can comprehend what other people are thinking, but they lack emotional empathy.) That doesn't mean autistic people don't have the capability for destructive impulses, but it's not what I would personally call creative.
Also, given how many scientists and inventors there are that were introverted (many of which are suspected to have had autism), I'd say the claim that extroverts are more creative stands on shaky ground. What's more is that other studies cited on Wikipedia contest the assumption that malevolent creativity is reliant on a person's individual mentality (e.g. increased by open-mindedness), and rather suggest that it's dependent on whether the individual's intentions are malevolent or not.
So, the attestations about "malevolent creativity" are far too contradictory to draw any general conclusions about it. Also, if you want to view violence and bullying as creativity, what else would be? By that definition, you might as well consider racism as creativity. However, what racism actually does is impeding creativity, since discrimination leads to less diversity in perspectives. At some point, defining something so broadly is just entering a too high threshold value when selecting by color in Gimp: If the number is too high, everything will be selected.
However, that doesn't have to mean there is no connection between creativity and destructivity (I'll choose to call it that for now) at all. They may be opposite "forces" influencing each other, with both being able to exist at the same time, kinda similar to love and hatred - however, just because they both exist on the same scale doesn't make them the same thing. Still, sometimes, destruction may actually have beneficial effects in the long term (like overthrowing an outdated political system), making space for new creative processes to take place - still, I would not call violence productive by itself.
Long story short, the only general constant is that creativity is a highly subjective term - and given this fact, it's baffling that Legion would use it in the first place. (For comparison, they only call the organics' reaction "unpredictable" in the dialogue about the experiment with the stars.) If they wanted to express that anger makes organics resort to unconventional methods, why wouldn't they have used the term "innovativeness", for instance? It describes the same thing, is more neutral and way more precise. You could argue that Legion was simply adhering to the definition of malevolent creativity as provided by psychology, but if so, why wouldn't they specify it as "malevolent creativity"?
Also, I'd still have to ask: Why the pause for consideration? It may sound like I'm overemphasizing this, but after doing a little research on mind uploading, I stumbled upon the information that while a human brain has about 100 trillion neural connections, the speed at which biological neurons fire is limited to ~200 hertz, while electronic hardware can easily operate at multiple gigahertz. Any being with electronic neurons would thus have a "faster" subjective experience, like experiencing an hour of lifetime in a single second of real-time. (All of this is not even taking the more advanced technology of the ME universe into account; still, it gives you a scale of how fast Geth actually think.) So, if anger increasing creativity was such a well-established fact, Legion, however briefly, should not have to pause.
There is, however, one alternate interpretation I hadn't thought of before: It occurred when I was thinking of Dionysus, whom most people may know as the god of wine, but who was also associated with both theater and religious ecstasy/ritual madness. The Maenads, his ancient followers, actually have quite a few similarities with Taylor's feral crew. The name itself means "raving ones" (being derived from the Greek word maínomai meaning "to rage"/"to be mad"), and they are described as feral women clad in animal skins who roam the wilderness, their frenzy/possession by Dionysus making them so strong that they're able to tear wild animals to pieces with their bare hands.
Considering these parallels and that Dionysus's creative and destructive powers were viewed as closely interlinked, you'd almost have to wonder why they didn't go with "madness increases creativity" - or, to word it a little more technical since it's Legion, "psychosis".
Now, this is where things actually get interesting: First off, the correlation between creativity and insanity is way better attested than the connection between creativity and anger, starting with the proverb "there's a fine line between genius and insanity". There are some studies that suggest this even has a genetic basis: There is a certain gene that is known to increase the likelihood of a person developing psychosis or schizophrenia, and when asked the question "Imagine there was a string hanging from every cloud reaching all the way to the ground - what would happen?" people with the same gene gave more and more original answers than people lacking it. In addition, people possessing the gene generally took part in more creative activities in their lives. (The psychologist conducting the study noted that only creative and intelligent people participated in it, so they'd still have to confirm whether it was true for the average population, but it does suggest the connection between genius and insanity has a biological basis.) It's assumed that this is because the brains of creative/mentally unstable people are wired differently than those of normal people, which naturally leads to different perspectives and thus more original ideas.
Taking the context of the line into consideration, it almost seems counterintuitive that Legion wouldn't use "psychosis". You'd almost have to wonder if "psychosis" was the word in the original script, but they exchanged it for "anger" at some point. For starters, it would feel like they're actually responding to Taylor ("the crazy ones" -> crazy = psychotic). Granted, "psychosis increases creativity" is a bit of a bold claim as well (I'd say it's similar to the correlation between creativity/destructivity; both creativity and psychosis arise from an altered perception of reality, but each is only a an effect, not a cause), but at least the statement has somewhat of a factual basis.
It would also make way more sense as to why Legion would want to observe what's happening in the first place. You might find quite a few opportunities to observe an enraged mob of people, but observing how a group of mentally deranged people would react to the same situation? Those opportunities are way more rare. Assuming Legion/the Geth have next to no data on it, it's even possible that Legion simply read the line from somewhere on the internet. That would at least provide somewhat of an explanation why it sounds so strange - they basically read out the result of their own research, but they're not sure of it themselves and don't have enough data to confirm or deny it (which is how the pause came to be). That's why they want to observe how the situation unfolds to check that hypothesis. (Although I think Legion would've remembered to add "psychosis reportedly increases creativity" in this case, but oh well…)
Anyway, my current take on this line is that a) it was added by someone other than Chris L'Etoile or b) it was originally meant to say "psychosis" but for whatever reason they changed it to "anger" later.
I honestly completely forgot about Adams, but that might be because I actually kind of disagree with him. (In fact, Adams/Chakwas is one of the fights where I think neither party is right, similar to EDI/Javik.)
Same as with creativity above, I think it's helpful if we first define what "programming" even means. In essence, a program is a sequence of actions that happen if a certain event occurs. To put it briefly, it's "A happens, so B happens".
If we were to view emotions as programming, that would mean if a certain situation/event occurs, people would always feel the exact same emotions about it, leading them to perform the exact same actions. This is already something you could call into question, but I think that would go completely beyond the constraints of this reply, so I'm gonna leave it at that.
Simply put, emotions are reactions to stimuli from our environment. These reactions, however, have multiple "layers": An operative layer (as in the action that is actually performed) and an emotional layer (how a person feels on the inside). Usually, the emotional layer serves to reinforce the operative layer. For example, if we see a child in danger, our first instinct is to save it (from an evolutionary standpoint, this is logical since caring for your offspring is beneficial to the whole species). This incentive might be aided by emotions such as love and concern.
To ask whether the instinct or the associated emotions came first is a bit of a hen-or-egg question, though. One thing that I want to add, however, is that there are two kinds of "natural programming": inherent instinct and personal experience/memories. (For instance, I have entomophobia, which is because I got stung by a wasp when I was little. The lesson my brain learned from this is "stay away from insects", a "directive" that gets intensified by fear.)
Anyway, while Adams may not be completely wrong, I'd say "emotions = programming" is a gross oversimplification - a half-truth, essentially.
I probably wouldn't have sided with Adams if Chakwas as an option wasn't even worse. However, what pisses me off the most isn't even her hostility towards the Geth - if that was the case, I would have to hate a lot of characters. It's her condescending comment directed at Shepard if you side with Adams: "Of course you'd say that. You two are practically machines, yourself."
This is clearly alluding to Shepard's Cerberus implants. Chakwas is responsible for Shepard's health, and she knows that the implants are a sore topic for Shep. (I think it's mentioned in a convo with EDI as well.) And yet, when Shepard disagrees with her, she actively uses this as a snide remark against her. If I was Shepard, this is the point where I would've quit my friendship with her. This may sound harsh, but there are things that you simply don't say to your friends - neither in jest nor in earnest.
Mass Effect 2 replay, recruiting Thane:
-There is quite a bit of autodialogue throughout this mission.
-As others have said, Seryna raises questions. Why did Nassana let her former head of security leave?
She kills shift workers that leave – at least, allegedly – but the former head of security can just walk out?
As we see with Thane and Shepard, that’s a big security risk.
-Why does Seryna want Nassana dead so badly?
She helps Thane. She helps Shepard on the chance that helping Shepard find Thane will end with Nassana dead. Nothing asked for in return.
This is a lot to do because you don’t like your former boss. Even if your boss is having people killed to protect her secrets. It seems personal – did Nassana kill some Seryna cared about?
-Seryna says she and Shepard will leave after shift workers clear out Tower Two.
However, there’s a salarian in the area fussing that’s he’s lost his family’s data because Nassana forced them out ASAP. He’ll get it once he’s allowed back in.
So it seems the towers have already been cleared out. If the salarian had been kicked out from an earlier shift, I presume he could have gone in when the next shift was permitted in.
-Seryna doesn’t ask if Shepard’s plan is to stop Thane or not until you’re in the car with them.
Considering she wants Thane to kill Seryna, she must be very confident Thane can take Shepard out if Shepard’s plan is to stop him.
-Letting the first salarian worker die is just cold, especially if you say his coworkers are on their own. There’s no reason to not help him.
-All the shift workers are salarian. Illium’s an asari dominated world, so they’re a minority on it. There’s probably some parallel to the real world in that and Nassana’s treatment of them.
-Kasumi about Thane helping the first group of salarians you find: That’s sweet. An assassin with a heart of gold.
Considering Kasumi is a thief with a heart of gold…
-Nassana’s essentially enslaved the salarians: They have to work to the end of their contract on threat of death. They don’t get overtime, and she’s quite willing to kill them when she wants them to leave.
This is probably legal on Illium.
-Huh. No one commented on me letting the mercenary who was up against the window go. Garrus always comments on that.
-Speaking of, the glass in these towers breaks way too easily. Nassana’s cheaping out on materials.
-If you go neutral on the salarian worker that points a gun at you, Kasumi calls him a “jumpy little lizard”.
Charming. Kasumi, you’re supposed to be better than that.
-If you choose any other option, Telon ends up passed out on the floor. It’s funny watching him swoon if you go paragon/renegade after skipping the renegade interrupt.
-The salarian workers do a lot for this mission. Without them, it would just be one long corridor of shooting. They also characterize Thane as a man who protects innocents before ever meeting him.
-I died so. Many. Times. On the windy bridge. Those drones that shoot missiles are awful, and what do you mean I can’t get a lock???
-The sun in the background when you finally meet Thane and Nassana adds a lot of drama to the cutscene.
-Jacob’s bitchiness to Thane is very odd. He never indicates an issue with mercenaries or assassins before or after this scene.
-As others have noted, Jacob’s claim he’s loyal to more than a paycheck is hypocritical. He left the Alliance because it had too much red tape, and he insists that he’s skeptical of Cerberus and will leave if it gives him reason to.
So that’s not loyalty to either employer. The closest he can say is that he’s loyal to his beliefs, but if so then the same could be said for Thane.
-If you go renegade with Thane and tell him you only hired him because he’s a good gun, he can bite back and reply that’s he’s working for you by choice and can leave at any time.
Nice. It’s always good to see someone push back against Shepard.
-You can tell Jacob to keep an eye on Thane.
This entire scene is so odd. I’m wondering if the original plan for Thane was different and it would have had him more ethically ambiguous?
Maybe you would have had Thane switch loyalties while he was on a mission by paying him more than his current employer. That would explain both Jacob’s and Shepard’s skepticism of his trustworthiness.
Just, something to explain this scene.
-If you go paragon, Thane says that he’s just a weapon. Weapons don’t kill, their wielders do.
I disagree. Thane chooses to be a weapon, ergo he has culpability for who he’s directed to kill.
“Just following orders” is not a get out of jail card.
Normandy
-Mordin’s loyalty mission is very abrupt. You only get one investigate option, and no real dialogue options.
Considering how talkative Mordin normally is, I suppose this curtness is a sign of his distress. No explanation for why Shepard’s not asking questions though.
-Samara says the code is 5000 sutras and covers every possible situation.
How long ago was this written? Because societies change over time. There are ethical questions that exist today that couldn’t have been imagined 500 years ago. What happens when one of those crop up?
Maybe this is one reason why asari society is so static – justicars decide what’s “correct” and kill everyone who disagrees with them. Makes it a bit difficult society to progress.
-And what happens when justicars disagree?
And I’m not accepting a cop out that the code causes all justicars to always come to the same conclusion. Look at how much blood has been spilled over human religious texts.
Are there factions of justicar that kill each other on sight? Did someone work out a truce so justicars with different interpretations politely avoid each other?
-Ah, time for another ME2 humanity is special moment. Humans are more individualist than any other species Samara has known.
Is this all humanity? Because as I recall, western society is normally considered more individualistic and eastern society is more collectivist. Did Bioware think that far?
-Thane had his eyes treated so he can see hanar bioluminescence. As a result he can’t see the difference between dark red and black.
That seems a tad dangerous for an assassin. Isn’t being able to tell colors apart critical for being able to blend in?
-When I choose investigate with Thane, there’s an option for other topics. However, this takes me back to the start menu. So what is is purpose? I can choose Return and other also go back to the Start menu.
-The drell situation with the hanar on Kahje is sad. It’s good they help each other, but it shouldn’t be a death sentence for the drell. Let them help hanar on other worlds that don’t make them sick.
-If you go neutral with Thane, he says he’s always considered himself dead to some degree.
Well, that’s fucked up. I’d like to have some words with the hanar that trained him.
-If you go paragon, he doubts your medical facilities and staff can do anything that the best hanar medical professionals have not been able to.
As others have pointed out: Buddy, the Normandy has Mordin fucking Solus on board. He cured a brand new multi species pathogen created by the Collectors working out of a back alley on Omega. Miracles are his specialty.
