A (possibly) helpful guide to the Nikki-verse for Infinity Nikki Players

Although it’s not at all necessary to know the lore of the previous games (Love Nikki, Shining Nikki), here is some info that you might benefit from if you’re joining the fandom with Infinity Nikki!

❄️General Info:

Love Nikki, Shining Nikki, and Infinity Nikki are all stand-alone games with self-contained stories, but they have some commonalities that I will get into later.

Love Nikki (LN) has a 2D art style, and is where many of us "veteran" players began our journey. Shining Nikki (SN) has both 2D and 3D art. Both of these games are stunning, so check them out!

Before Love Nikki, there were two other dress-up games in this series that did not involve being transported into a magical world. They were called NikkiUp2U (released 2012) and Hello Nikki (released around 2016). These games are more obscure, with the latter currently only being available in China, so not much is known about them to international fans.

The developers of the game are Chinese, so expect to get a lot of goodies around Lunar New Year and other major Chinese holidays!

According to Hello Nikki, our main character is around 19 years old. In Shining Nikki, she talks about how she used to go to college before getting transported to Miraland. Her birthday is December 6, which is why Infinity Nikki came out last week and why we got a free outfit (we’ll get a new one every year!)

Momo claims he’s not a cat, but a member of the “Momo Clan” (LN). He was a little annoying in Love Nikki, but he’s more endearing in later games.

Nikki and Momo are the only recurring characters in the franchise.

The biggest advice I can give as a veteran is: Don't bother with trying to make a visually cohesive outfit for styling battles unless you have a lot of clothing. We've all tried it. It won't work. For now, just layer on everything that has high stats. You're always free to wear your fashionable outfits during regular gameplay, and "glow up" your favorite clothes when you have enough resources, so that you can make better outfits for later battles.

I've seen a lot of people in other places asking about whether the Nikki games will have more androgynous or masculine clothing, and they probably will! It took a while for these clothes to appear in LN and SN, but there are definitely several options out there, from ouji fashion to streetwear to military-style outfits. Read about the seven nations below to find out more.

A lot of people also seem curious about representation for people of color. Unfortunately, the options can be quite limited, as it took a while for textured hair options to appear for players in Love Nikki, and I'm not quite sure about the situation in Shining Nikki. Different cultures are represented in Miraland (as explained below) but they still have their limitations. With Infinity Nikki being more oriented towards an international fanbase than previous games, though, perhaps the developers will be encouraged to branch out more.

❄️Worldbuilding

The world that Nikki has been transported into is called Miraland.

Miraland is composed of seven nations, each with their own distinct fashion style. That means that if you do not like the style of clothes we’ve been seeing so far in Infinity Nikki, do not worry! They’ll have everything eventually.

For some reason, they changed the names of the countries in Infinity Nikki, and I’m not sure why (I’m going to keep mixing them up…). Below, I’ve listed their LN/SN names first, and their Infinity Nikki names second.

The seven nations are:

🎀Lilith/Ninir/Heartcraft Kingdom: In the older games, it was known mostly for fairytale-inspired clothing and lolita fashion, with the occasional “pastoral” suit. It looks like Heartcraft Kingdom in Infinity Nikki has been leaning more into the pastoral aesthetic, but Nonoy’s outfit seems to be in the lolita style. Also, the suits we have been crafting so far for catching bugs and petting the animals is at least lolita-inspired. (People who wear lolita fashion, please correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the Chinese version of this fashion is a lot more loose with the rules than the Japanese version I am more familiar with). This kingdom is always the first to be introduced in these games. Expect drama to follow whenever we get introduced to the royal family of this kingdom…it always happens. Nikki's first friend is always from this kingdom--we started with Bobo in Love Nikki, then Joy in Shining Nikki, and now Nonoy in Infinity Nikki.

🐉Cloud Empire/Lanling Empire: Known for traditional and modern Asian fashion. A vast majority of the fashions are going to be inspired by Chinese fashion, so if you’re a fan of period dramas or xianxia, you’re in luck! Aside from hanfu and qipao, they also usually have some representation of other East Asian cultures, featuring several kimono and the occasional hanbok. (Due to some controversies in Shining Nikki relating to conflicts between China and Korea, however, I’m not sure if the developers will continue to add hanbok in future games). Love Nikki also included some outfits for Chinese ethnic minorities like the Miao, and Vietnamese ao dai if I remember correctly. All games also have at least one Peking Opera costume—it’s like an industry staple. Overall, Cloud Empire is usually the second kingdom to be introduced in the game, so I’m sure we’ll see it pretty soon. Maybe we’ll go along with Tan Youyou, depending on how the story will go.

👠Apple Federation/Starhail Federation: Known for streetwear, high fashion, and casual clothing (like what you’d wear on an average day). I think Dada and Bebe’s outfits would be classified as Apple, even though they live in Heartcraft. Unlike the rural towns we have seen so far, Apple tends to be a very urban, city-based environment, filled with spies and shady businessmen. Nikki's girlfriend, Kimi (from Love Nikki), is also from here.

👑Pigeon Kingdom/Twinmoon Kingdom: Known for European fashions, including fairy costumes, witch/sorcerer outfits, Rococo dresses (with long skirts, compared to the lolita style in Lilith/Ninir/Heartcraft), and anything else you’d expect to see in a Western fantasy or period drama. Funnily enough, there is always at least one scene in the Pigeon Kingdom that has to do with a cathedral, so expect some fashions with gothic and Catholic-inspired imagery as well. Some of the inhabitants who live there are elves and fairies, like Timis. Although most of the ability outfits we have so far look like they're from Lilith/Ninir/Heartcraft, the "purification" outfit strikes me as something more typical of Pigeon.

⚔️North Kingdom/Empire of Light: A cold country best known for winter clothing—heavy scarves, overcoats, and hats—as well as military attire. There is also at least one "ice queen" style suit in every game. If I recall correctly, this kingdom has been having civil wars since Love Nikki, so expect a lot of action in this area. I suspect that Bettina is from here, but I'm not sure yet.

🐪Wasteland/Terra Alliance: The original name of this country sparked a lot of controversy, so I'm glad that they have changed it. This kingdom usually has desert-themed clothing, ancient Greek/Egyptian clothing, clothing inspired by nature, bohemian clothing, South, and Southeast Asian clothing (the cultural representation isn’t always the best, unfortunately…but I am optimistic that Shining Nikki and Infinity Nikki are more culturally sensitive than Love Nikki).

🤖Ruin Island/Whaleport: A mysterious island that features “futuristic” or sci-fi inspired clothing. In previous games, we have seen medical doctors with dubious legitimacy, scientists who experiment on themselves (?) and androids, so I’m curious to see who we’ll meet this time. Many players from the previous games who liked this style have felt that the developers often neglect this kingdom, unfortunately.

❄️Story and gameplay advice

Without spoiling the older games, I can say that, generally...

Most of the story is based on conflicts between different characters and sometimes different kingdoms. These problems, as mentioned before, are solved through styling battles.

Infinity Nikki seems to be going for a cozier vibe. However, both of its predecessors have sometimes gone into dark territories, featuring themes of war, violence, and betrayal. (I may or may not have cried over the death of a certain someone in Love Nikki...)

Therefore, dramatic things could very well happen in Infinity Nikki. I'm not saying that it can't be your comfort game if that is what you are hoping for, as the other games can still also be light, funny, and cozy. I just want to warn more sensitive players who might not be expecting it from a dress-up game.

When I first wrote this guide, I initially thought that the miracle outfits were like the "lifetime suits" of previous games, where crafting them was optional and not necessary to progress through the story. However, this seems not to be the case. Nevertheless, take your time while crafting them--there's no need to rush.

I'm not sure how f2p-friendly Infinity Nikki will be, but I haven't spent anything on either of the other games and I've been able to buy many of the suits I wanted. Just make sure that you budget accordingly and remember that if you want one suit but can't afford it at the time, another suit with a similar aesthetic might come out in the future. Also banners can re-run!

Keep an eye out for redeem codes! These are often posted by the game's social media, and you can get a lot of free stuff.

The fan-favorite kingdoms are usually Lilith/Ninir (Heartcraft) and Cloud (Lanling), followed by Pigeon (Twinmoon) and Apple (Starhail). The other three tend to get neglected, so if you like the sound of those the most, I'm sorry... :(

The last two sections include speculation, trivia, and an explanation of some inside jokes from the other games. Feel free to skip them if needed!

❄️Continuity and Fandom References to Other Nikki Games

Like I said earlier, the Nikki games can all work as standalone games, and the only returning characters are Nikki and Momo.

However, I've added this section to discuss possible theories and connections, as well as catch others up to speed on some of the inside jokes and characters that we Nikki veterans like to talk about.

If you keep hearing names like "Bobo," "Lunar," "Kimi," and "Nidhogg," these are characters from Love Nikki.

Bobo and Lunar are some of the first characters we met in LN. Kimi is the closest character we have to a canon love interest for Nikki. All of them are fan-favorites, so we're hoping to see any references to them in Infinity Nikki as well.

I can't say much about the very controversial and very popular Nidhogg without spoiling LN, but at least you now know where the name is from.

In Love Nikki, there is a "blood curse" that prevents people from using violence. Therefore, people often resolve conflicts by entering styling battles and destroying each other with the power of a good outfit.

Never ask a Love Nikki player what happened in Chapter 15.

Shining Nikki takes place roughly 700 years before Love Nikki, where there is no blood curse (which means certain people have managed to commit certain crimes...). Several SN characters are the ancestors of, or otherwise related to, LN characters.

Nikki veterans often like to make references to Ashley, Lilith (the person), Joy, and Qin Yi. These are all Shining Nikki characters.

So far, we haven't seen such a connection between old games and Infinity Nikki, so a lot of people suspect that this might be an alternate universe. When more about this version of Miraland is known, I might make another post.

❄️My predictions for future updates

Every time we enter a new country in Miraland, we will have new ability outfits to craft to fit the style of the new setting. This is because most of the outfits we have so far look like Lilith/Ninir suits in previous games, with very few influences from other nations.

The next country to be introduced will most likely be Lanling. I originally thought that they'd let us visit Lanling in time for Lunar New Year, but with the scope of the story, I think it may take some more time before that.

The next big update will be around Lunar New Year, where they'll probably hold some five-star banners, give free diamonds as a login event, and make a new short story, if they celebrate the same way as in Shining Nikki. They're probably also going to give us another free suit. (I hope it's Legend of the White Snake themed, since next year is Year of the Snake!)

Then, we'll probably see the equivalent of the Apple Federation, followed by Pigeon Kingdom.

We will get a new version of this stunning dress. It's called the Star Sea and has shown up in every game so far. I'm actually surprised we haven't heard about it in Infinity Nikki yet.

You yawned before rubbing your eyes, slowly awaking from your slumber, you turned to the side hoping your lover, Vox was in bed with you to cuddle but you were met with your lover's side of the bed cold & nicely made. Of course Vox was probably already awake and at work, you were hoping he would make an exception today because it was your birthday! However, that didn't seem to be true. You didn't let that brings you down tho, maybe he was making you your favorite breakfast so you could have breakfast in bed? You brushed it off before deciding to go freshen up and take a relaxing hot bath to take your mind off Vox.

You made your way to the bathroom, turning on the water to the temperature of your liking before striping and getting into the bathtub

After you finish taking a shower

You wrapped your body in your (f/c) robe before making your way into your shared room to get changed into your favourite outfit, Ouji fashion (or any style to your liking) ! You walked out of your room, expecting to see Vox making you your favourite breakfast but to your disappointment, he wasn't.

That was when it hit you...he had forgotten that it was your birthday. You couldn't blame him though he is a busy man working everyday on his company, Voxtek. He worked everyday from 8-12 hours it probably just slipped from his mind but you couldn't help but feel disappointed.

You made yourself your favourite breakfast, eating it slowly while thinking about how Vox had forgotten your birthday. You lost your appetite from thinking about it so much, you had placed the remaining of your favorite breakfast in the fridge.

You dragged yourself to your bedroom before slamming the door behind you. You couldn't help but wallow in self pity, tears running down your face. You soon fell asleep from crying.

You jolted awake from Velvette barging into your room shouting "Wake up girl ! It's your birthday why are you staying in your room like a depressed chick? Also why are you crying?! You aren't supposed to be sad on such a big event !" Velvette was holding a (f/c) present in one of her arm. She sat you up before handing you the present.

"What got you crying on your big day (y/n)?" velvette asked. "I..V-Vox forgot about my birthday! I c-couldnt help but feel upset and disappointed and started crying" you stuttered, chocking on your tears.

"Oh that bitch! How could he forget such an big event to you? His such an idiot. Why don't you open your present from me and we could go shopping to cheer you up! Sound like fun?" Velvette asked. You nodded before opening your present, inside was your favourite style of clothing in your (f/c) with matching shoes, a handbag & accessories.

"Velvette I love you so much I swear to Lucifer himself,plantonically obviously but you get what I mean! Also that plan sounds like absolute fun let's go!"

On yours and Velvette way out, you two bumped into Valentino,he wished you a happy birthday before going to his studio. Even Valentino remember and you barely even talk to him (or like him for that matter) and Vox, your lover didn't even remember it was good to say that you were pissed.

After you and Velvette came back from shopping, hands full with tons of bags full of your favourite stuff

"Feeling better dear?" Velvette asked putting down the bags of your favourite stuff on the floor of your shared bedroom with Vox. "With you taking me out to buy my favourite things? Hell yea!"

It was good to say that after Velvette left, you placed the stuff you bought neatly in your shared cabinet before placing a letter on the door reading : fuck off Vox, sleep on the couch today. You had placed some pillows and blankets on the sofa outside for Vox. You snuggled into bed before dozing off.

After awhile, Vox came back from work. He thought it was odd that there was pillows and blankets on the sofa but thought nothing of it until he say the note on your shared bedroom door.

He threw a silent tantrum, stomping his feet around. Why did he had to sleep on the couch for ‘no apparent reason???' He didn't even know what he did to deserve his kisses and cuddle session with his beloved lover taken away especially after a long day at work! However, he didn't want to make you more pissed so he slept on the couch like how you wanted him too. He decided, his going to visit Velvette first thing tomorrow morning. He knew you and Velvette was best friends and you told her everything.

It was good to know that the first thing Vox did after waking up was grumpily storming to Velvette's studio demanding why you made him sleep on the couch.

Vox slammed open the door that lead to Velvette's studio,pretty sure if he or Valentino did that one more time the door would fly off their hinges."VEL! Vox immediately hugged you and kept apologizing profusely, you two spent the rest of the night shopping, having a fancy date at Hell's fanciest restaurant.

Lucifer was a VERYY busy man, I mean he is the king of hell himself! Of course his day is filled with meetings and other stuff.

By the time you woke up Lucifer had long gone off to work,attending meetings,doing paperwork and alot of others but for the whole day he couldn't shake off the feeling that he is forgetting something very important. No matter how many times he checked his schedule,his calander he couldn't seem to remember what he had forgotten.

riddle is simply in love with your sense of style, he never really directly tells you how much he does. he is still far too shy and nervous around you. there are so many times you'll catch him staring at you and completely admiring everything about you, how your colors and accessories fit you so beautifully. you have him quite mesmerized, sometimes when you come specially coordinated for things like unbirthday parties or school events he doesn't know how he can fall even more than he already has. he stumbles slightly but tells you with a faint smile something like "oh (name), you look lovely..." he is flushed.

riddle especially loves the little things that adorn your clothes like ribbons or flowers. he finds himself getting them for you the most as gifts, he tries to get colors he sees you wearing the most. he has a good memory, not to mention he notices everything about you. he knows what would suit your tastes pretty well.

discreetly... not so discreetly has attempted and still does things to get himself to match with you in some way. he had thought of getting the two of you a matching accessory. he usually prompts to colors and such though. riddle does love it when you go with something red and white to fit his dorm uniform.

he really can't stay frustrated or upset whenever you seem to cause trouble and ruckus within his dorm. he'll sometimes go on and ramble on how you shouldn't have done something like that-! but you tend to really distract him will reach out and adjust parts of your outfit for you, smoothing the fabric out or fixing a necklace as he continues scolding, it slowly fades, and he just feels like you've made him forget what he was even talking about in the first place.

You looked at Feitan with the biggest doe eyes you could muster. You were trying to convince him to go shopping with you once again since it seemed like he enjoyed himself the last time you two perused a boutique together. This time, though, it would be his turn to bring home a new outfit.

“You no think my clothes fit?” he chided, trying to avoid your gaze because he knew you were giving him that look—the one he could barely resist.

“No, they fit fine,” you said, “but I wanted to take you somewhere special. There’s this store that carries a style I think you would look great in.”

“I look bad now?” he asked, his hands tucked in his pockets.

You narrowed your eyes. “Are you being difficult on purpose?”

Feitan smiled mischievously. “Maybe.”

“Okay then,” you sighed wistfully, turning your head toward the floor in mock sadness, “guess I’ll go to the store all by myself. Walk the streets… alone.”

You peeked up at Feitan who was back to his usual of showing no emotions at your words.

You made another attempt at getting a response. “All by my lonesome. In that great, big, dangerous world out there…”

Nothing.

“I’ll go try and pick something out for you. And then if I bring it back and it doesn’t fit, I’ll have to venture out again myself to return it…”

Feitan was wholly unamused by your antics.

“You finished?” he barked. You nodded, anxiously biting your bottom lip in hopes that he was about to agree to your little adventure.

“Good. You talk too much. I go, but only to keep eye on you. You troublemaker.”

You broke out into a smile and clapped your hands, happy that you convinced him. As you ran to find your purse so you could leave, your frilled skirt swirled around you in a mesmerizing dance of satin and tulle and Feitan was so distracted by you that he didn’t register your soft hand on his arm until much too late for someone with his quick reaction time.

“You ready?” you questioned a second time as your first attempt at gaining his attention failed, Feitan seemingly daydreaming. He didn’t respond verbally but headed outside, your hand falling from his arm as he left. You were saddened by the loss of touch between you two, missing the comfort of feeling him. Little did you know, the man many steps ahead of you was feeling the same way.

Your platform shoes clacked against the pavement in your attempt to catch up with the speediest Phantom Troupe member.

“You don’t even know where we’re going,” you grumbled, out of breath when you finally were able to walk side by side with Feitan.

“Not my fault you slow.”

“I talk too much and I’m slow. Anything else you’d like to compliment me on today?”

You look pretty, he thought, but he’d sooner cut out his own tongue before admitting that out loud.

“Let’s see. You passive aggressive.”

You practically growled. “You’re about to make me aggressive aggressive.”

Feitan shivered with excitement at the thought. Since you were usually upbeat and unusually kind at all times (traits he had come to love about you), it still would be a real treat for him to see you unhinged. However, you were already back to your happy-go-lucky self, squealing in delight when a certain shopfront entered your view.

“Here it is!” you exclaimed, your eyes sparkling. Now steps behind you, Feitan walked through the door and furrowed his brow. What was this place? He had never seen fashions like this in his life. There were waistcoats and collared shirts galore, chains and jewelry glittering on displays all around him. As you scurried ahead, already deep diving into the racks, he sauntered behind you, overwhelmed by all the choices in front of him.

“This style is called Ouji,” you explained, picking through shirts. “It’s like the more masculine version of my style, which is gothic Lolita.”

“It’s… different,” he said, but you knew he didn’t mean it in a bad way. It was something he had probably never seen before—and you were happy to introduce him to it!

“What do you think about this?”

You held up a white collared shirt with a ruffle on the front. Feitan shook his head, scrunching his nose under his cowl.

“No white. Stains easy.”

“Good call,” you replied, hanging it up. “Ooh! How about this?”

You plucked another shirt from the rack, this time black with a high neck and long sleeves sporting buttons at the cuff. He looked it over and nodded in agreement.

“That’s a good start,” you said. “What size are you?”

Feitan just shrugged. He didn’t shop much, nor did he pay attention to sizing. Phinks usually brought things home for him and they magically fit.

“Small maybe?” you mused. “I’ll get a medium too in case you want a roomier fit.”

You handed him the two shirts and busied yourself in the pants section while he moseyed over to the accessories. His attention was caught by a jacquard vest with long tails, inky in color, with large buttons down the front. He hummed in amusement as he studied the piece, wondering if it would go with whatever you were picking out. Not caring to put more thought into it, he grabbed one off the rack and walked back to you.

“I went with black breeches since those are easiest to style and- Oh! Look at you, already getting to the fun part of accessorizing.”

You gave him a big smile, happy to see him enjoying himself.

“You should go try this stuff on,” you told him, leading the way to the dressing rooms.

“You can use this room,” the store clerk said, opening the curtain.

“Thank you,” you replied to her, but Feitan wasn’t budging from where he stood.

“What’s wrong?” you asked.

“I no want to get undressed in public. Too vulnerable.”

“I’ll be right here the entire time. No one is getting between me and that curtain, I promise.”

His gray eyes pierced into your own before sighing and entering the dressing room. When the curtain closed, you exhaled out of relief. eyyyyy I don't get to write a ton of Penguin parties! Always exciting. Believe me, I'm rather familiar with the lolita style. Honestly? The fashion itself makes him feel masculine in a positive, non-toxic way. He's rather used to people looking at him or thinking of him as effeminate because of his smaller stature and method of dress- Not that effeminate is bad, not at all. Yet, it's frustrating when your gender identity is distinctly male.

So dating a woman who dresses in a highly feminine style gives him a reason to flash his peacock feathers, so to speak. In some ways, it encourages him to get flashier with his outfits. Why not? The two of you together, a complimentary pair...

And you two will have matching elements when you go out. Whether it's small color coordination, or the same fabric was used for your dress and his handkerchief- It's a subtle way of telling others to back off.

For those who don't know what it is: basically, Lolita fashion is a Japanese subculture that was based on the clothing style of Victorian era and Rococo style. No one knows exactly when this subculture emerged, but Wiki said that it was somewhere around the 70s. Found a Tumblr post for an example of what it looks like, or you can look it up yourself. It's pretty, but it's definitely Hell on earth if you somehow think of working on a farm or in the Mines in such clothes 😅

As long as Farmer doesn't go overboard with their clothes and expose themself to overheating or difficulty breathing properly - then Harvey has nothing against their style. It's a bit odd and extravagant, but they're an adult and have the right to wear what they like. The worry comes, though, when the Farmer's told the doctor that they're going to fight the monsters in the Mines in these clothes. Yoba have mercy, maybe Harvey can talk them into wearing some protection, like helmet or something? Please, he's getting nervous....

Elliot himself spends so much effort and time to style his luxurious and unruly hair, to iron his white shirt perfectly, to polish his shoes to a dazzling shine. The writer can't imagine such a thing - to do all the hard work on his appearance and clothes, to spoil everything in Mines at once. The Farmer looks so wonderful, don't they feel at all bad about ruining the expensive fabric of their clothes? Of course, Elliott is in favour of the idea of trying to look good at all times, but in some places it may be inappropriate.

I think Nadeko has some real “my mom doesn’t let me pick my clothes, this is the most androgynous thing I own.” vibes so I was fairly hesitant on concepts like Tsukihi picking clothes for her or Nadeko becoming girly in a traditional cute way again. I understand the concept of that Nadeko reclaiming her own femininity from her trauma is something valuable in storytelling that can be validating. Yet that plot line has mostly been used misogyny plots to de-tomboy some tomboy characters or like “fixing” a girl character. So it becomes awkward to view with nadeko, as this is a character with a story about expressing repressed parts of yourself, following your dreams, being authentic and not what society wants, and living ungracefully. The rebellion against cuteness can easily be undercut by the need to market nadeko girlier.

(I feel like a lot of the nademono fanart I’ve seen has mostly been nadeko in the more masc fits which I feel like says something about the core nadeko audience outside the anime lol)

But the trailer had me thinking that the showrunners may understand this to the degree of making the outfit from tsukihi’s closet boyish (well as masculine as sorta sweet ouji Lolita style fashion can be, but there’s an intent of boyishness in there). So it’s got me imagining that maybe in the nadeko timeskip outfit, she also wears something boyish! I think that if Nadeko has to reclaim anything cute it would have to break the mold on some level. If that ended up as cute boy fashion then so be it. This is my truth.

Seriously considering writing more about my blorbos being goth. I know way too much about the vampire subculture and also I love the idea of applying gothic lit tropes to LOZ. Hells. Twilight Princess exists. Is there anything more goth than a cowboy with eyeliner who turns into a nightmarish beast under cover of darkness?

I feel like Twilight would have no frame of reference for goth anything, and yet just naturally be extremely goth.

Fanon Legend definitely has enough reason to swing towards the mourning/explicitly death related side of things, and technically Wind does too.

Fanon Vio has INFINITE reasons to be goth, including but not limited to a desire to practice necromancy to see his dead boyfriend again (who also happens to be a demon). Depending on whether or not they're all on the same wavelength, this could include all of Four.

This is going to sound unhinged, but hear me out. Some sort of ouji style for Wars. While he does have an image to maintain, lolita style was in part created as a reaction to the idea of attractiveness- women dressing like little girls as a statement that not all fashion is meant to be sexy, it's just supposed to be fun. It's not really gendered, but there is a more masculine version, and I feel like Wars would just melt into the goddamn floor from the relief of being pretty but not a Sex Symbol for a bit. Once he got used to the idea. Maybe in pastels, the darker gothic colors might remind him too much of Cia.

My only statement regarding Time is that he deserves to wear a dress. That man's gender is tree and we all know it, I bet gendered clothes confused him for the longest time and it only got weirder once he permanently passed puberty and people started caring. I'm not sure he'd be outright goth, but he'd have his own death-related Kokiri traditions and he'd probably observe them in relation to the fuckery of Termina. It's just really hard to notice because Kokiri death traditions involve Not Talking about the dead, generally. Could have some implications for why he doesn't talk about himself in depth much.

Sky has never been goth in his life but it would be funny to give him a Demise-related midlife crisis. Something something scaly black pants.

Hyrule's life is CONSUMED by thoughts of blood and death and proper disposal of his corpse, barren fields and dying villagers, haunted woods and rampaging demons. Most of that is just business as usual though. I'd say he might not dress very gothic but he still has a very gothic approach to things like the beauty of the ominous red sunset and flourishing thorn bushes or the safety inherent in a well-kept graveyard. He's definitely slept on or even inside of a grave before. Very cozy.

Wild has tried every aesthetic at least once and will continue to add more to his collection. Also he deserves to get as much mileage as possible out of undead jokes. Maybe he'd even outright identify as undead as a coping mechanism. His version of being extremely morbid includes dressing in the ancient guardian set, looking like the very machines that killed and resurrected him.

Some ideas for Twisted Wonderland events

(*Mild spoilers for some JP server events and Chapter 6)

-A Mulan-themed event: In one of the Halloween events, Silver mentioned knowing the story of Mulan, and Lilia has mentioned having been to "the East" before (not to mention Diasomnia's Halloween costumes are longs). It would be lovely to see Lilia return to the TWST-equivalent of China with some of his friends and meeting new characters--bonus points if someone is twisted from Mushu. A story about a girl who makes a sacrifice for her aging father by enlisting in the military on his behalf fits well with Silver and Lilia, so now would be the perfect opportunity to give them duo magic! Also, Chinese xianxia/martial arts fantasy novels are very popular in Japan and abroad nowadays (if you know, you know :) ), and I would love to see the boys wearing hanfu--they'd look so majestic and cool!

-Sam's hometown event: A Princess and the Frog event where the boys go to the TWST version of New Orleans, chaperoned by Sam. It would be a great opportunity to explore the jazz and culinary scene, and, of course, wear 1920s-inspired clothing. Someone in Octavinelle gets an SSR.

-A pajama-party event: Night Raven College hosts an all-night pillow fight tournament, and everyone gets extremely competitive, kind of like Beanfest. Everyone wears pajamas--I'm not sure if they'd have their own outfits, or if the dorms would match and have PJ sets with their logo on it (kind of like the pajamas they sell at the JP Disney Store). In battle, the chibis throw pillows at each other.

-Octavinelle hometown event: We are introduced to the Tweels' parents and/or Azul's mother. Given how Jamil and Kalim's hometown event carried out, it is likely that only one of the three will actually get an event card, but we'll see. In the Halloween event, Riddle mentioned that he's never seen the sea before. Even though he's had a chance in the Lost in the Book with Stitch event (and the developers probably want to give the spotlight to different characters), I'm afraid he doesn't remember it. Anyway, he deserves to go again. Alternatively, there's an event where the boys go to the Sunshine Lands and meet Prince Rielle. In this case, Riddle and Azul must go together--it would be nice to see after the events of Chapter 6.

-Riddle and Trey hometown event/Black Butler crossover: We've already had a Heartslabyul-themed hometown event with Deuce, but this time, we get to meet Trey's family and Riddle's mother. The likelihood that we get a canon Black Butler crossover as well is very close to zero, but it would be really fun to make a few jokes/hints about Riddle having a younger cousin who wears an eyepatch and solves mysteries with his enigmatic butler. Bonus points if Riddle and Jade have duo magic and dress up in Victorian/ouji clothing.

-J-fashion event: Speaking of ouji clothing, it would be amazing if there was an event inspired by Japanese fashions and subcultures. I think there was a part in one of the anthology mangas where Vil gave the Pop Music Club a visual kei makeover. I know the Pop Music Club has their own SSRs already, but I wouldn't mind seeing more outfits in this style.

-An orchestra-themed event: Some of the NRC students form a classical orchestra. Malleus is there, of course--I imagine him playing the cello this time. The Octavinelle trio is there as well with their respective instruments, as is Idia and Riddle both playing violins. I can see Jamil playing a woodwind instrument--maybe a flute, a clarinet, or an oboe?

i'm zero!!!! i'm a gyaruo. i feel some level of unhealthy connection to angels but that's not really primary, i'm quite sociable! i also really like my melody and gender ambiguity, reconnecting with nature, animals especially horses bunnies and all kinds of sparkling stuff. i also seem to like disturbing stuff like horrors packaged like something cutesy. i would love comforts and also pronouns, perhaps something glam themed or like fight themed or rather something cunty yk? thank you so much!!!!!

Balthazar

roots: Is your OC's look inspired by any specific style of clothing or fashion trend? What are the roots and/or inspiration for their look?

The inspirations!!! So, I know I mention it periodically, but Balthazar’s clothes take not insignificant inspiration from ouji fashion. It was very present in manga I read in my formative years and I have a lot of fondness for it. Elegant, flamboyant, androgynous… I love it. And unsurprisingly the same kinds of historical European noble fashion that inspire ouji also inspire me from time to time. I was going to include some examples but uhhhh I think there are going to be enough images in this asdlfijas

A specific inspiration though has got to be the work of Jun Mochizuki. I absolutely love Mochizuki-sensei’s art, and the styles in Pandora Hearts and The Case Study of Vanitas are just. So huge in my mind forever. Years ago Balthazar had a much less flamboyant style that was pretty directly inspired by Vanitas himself; over time he’s moved towards flashier looks, but there’s still a Vanitas element to him, I think.

change: Has your OC ever drastically changed their appearance? Significant haircuts, big tattoos, complete wardrobe swap, etc? Why? How do they feel about the change?

God, he’s gone through enough that this is practically a life history.

So, two important things to know are that 1) Balthazar was born poor and 2) Balthazar is a trans man. So early in life Balthazar had pretty limited access to choices of clothing, often wearing hand-me-downs from the neighbor’s daughters that were, though well cared for, worn and usually plain, and meant for a little girl. At the time Balthazar’s father Kostas left Balthazar’s hair long, not unlike the way Kostas remembered the hair of Balthazar’s mother. The first big change would have probably been when in an act of anger and desperation, Balthazar cut his hair practically to the root while his father was out. Kostas was upset and confused, but tried to be ginger around the clear distress Balthazar was expressing. Some time after this Balthazar began finding ways to access more masculine clothing from charity, secondhand stores when he could scrounge up the money, and occasional theft.

In his teens, during the period where he was living with his teacher, he slowly began to change his image again, emulating his idea of a fashionable young man of high society. Time away from his childhood home had slowly given him more comfort being in public and with the sense that he passed, and he had begun to introduce himself with a new name when in public. He also had gotten far, far better at coming up with money in order to indulge his tastes. He was also very good at finding friends, lovers, and benefactors to give him gifts. Over this period his sense of style started to resemble his present wardrobe. He got his ears pierced and began experimenting with jewelry. He also began to grow out his hair again, wearing it long and artificially straightened for a period due to a popular trend. This was the first time he started to feel really comfortable with how he existed in public. Somewhere in here, also top surgery, because if a game is going to say “there’s well developed non-magical medical knowledge in this fantasy world” I’m going to go “awesome there’s top surgery.” I am allowed to have this and no one is allowed to argue with me <3

After being thrown out of his teacher’s home, Balthazar lost of lot of his wardrobe and over the ensuing years much of what he had began to get increasingly worn out. He stopped straightening his hair, and when he finally left Absalom he cut it short. It felt like a fitting fresh start. Though the haircut may have also helped soothe nerves- both the anxiety of leaving behind all he had known before and the sense that his control over his appearance and his general presence in the world had been deteriorating. His style became simpler for a time as he sold off trinkets and unnecessary things piecemeal to finance his travels when money was tight. The Balthazar who arrived in Brevoy was one who had slowly but surely become more subdued and practical, even if he still clung to some of his old extravagant trappings where he could and was certainly not prepared for a true wilderness trek.

After the defeat of the Stag Lord, Jamandi Aldori did finance a new wardrobe fitting for a Brevic nobleman as a gift, but Balthazar didn’t truly come back into his own until he met the tailor Sharel. Sharel has been very good at working with Balthazar’s flashy and unconventional personal tastes and designed a lot of the clothes Balthazar has worn since becoming the ruler of the Stolen Lands (as well as reworking favorite pieces to accommodate the wings later on). Balthazar has a great deal of respect for Sharel’s work as an artist. He appreciates what Sharel does more than he expresses- and given how he loves to tease Sharel by showering him with praise, that’s a lot of appreciation.

The other major developments of Balthazar’s life have been supernatural. Balthazar’s halo first manifested when he was around seven or eight (the first clear sign that he was an aasimar), but he generally suppressed it to avoid notice. As his powers as a sorcerer developed, however, this became more and more difficult. Over the course of the game’s plot his halo becomes much brighter when manifested and can no longer be fully suppressed without active effort. The result is that there’s often a faint glow around him- usually not clearly visible in daylight or bright indoor spaces, but unmistakable in dim light. Shortly after the events of chapter three, he also develops wings very suddenly. He has a deep loathing for the clearly supernatural parts of his appearance, and the wings in particular cause a great deal of distress.

roots: Is your OC's look inspired by any specific style of clothing or fashion trend? What are the roots and/or inspiration for their look?

Well, for the most part I just draw Kas in clothes that they have worn in the game. It’s nice to be so laid back about things from time to time, haha. Kas is my first serious character in years who is meant to mostly resemble an in-game appearance from a video game.

With that said, the pre-canon outfits I did design myself. Notably, the assassin/cultist outfit was conceptualized extremely early on (within two or three days of starting the game…) and was meant to be inspired by a kind of edgy, sexy character in 90s and early aughts pop culture who skulked around in black leather to let you know they were Dangerous. I had a kind of femme fatale vision in my mind. Although I didn’t actually reference anything specific when designing, I can easily point to Trish from Devil May Cry and Testament from the early Guilty Gear games as examples of what kind of thing I mean. I hope this makes sense. I hope this doesn't look crazy.

The boots are based directly on a real pair from the brand Demonia. I have no idea how I found this real pair and I apparently didn’t save whatever images I was working off of, so I can’t show them to you. I just reference my old art when I need to draw them now :’)

motion: How does your OC move? How does their clothing help or hinder their range of motion? Are they flexible, coordinated, clumsy?

Although Kasander tends to be awkwardly restless when trying to sit still, they actually tend to move in very precise, fluid ways. They’re someone who’s really meant to be moving- they’re built for it. They’re extremely quick and agile, and it often takes people off guard at first meeting just how fast they are when they start moving. There’s a lot of grace to them- somewhat undercut by a tendency for big, enthusiastic or dramatic gestures, but still so clear. And they revel in movement in a way that’s equally clear- always bounding ahead and then falling back when walking with someone, quick to dart up to a higher position or leap over obstacles, turning with arms thrown wide in a spin on the heel. They’re always happy to take the harder path when it means some tricky footwork. They way they move is joyful. They have a great deal of comfort in their body.

Before the Tadpole Era, their clothes tended to complement this fairly well. Their clothes fit well and were designed to accommodate their range of motion (high) and level of activity (high). Even their cloak was meant to be short enough not to get in the way, and the clasp of it could be easily released to drop it as quickly as possible (useful to shed anyone grabbing onto it or simply to be rid of something loose that could be pulled around the throat). The paladin clothing is… less well suited to them. Although the armor has been refitted to their body, the tabard remains loose, meant upon examination for someone slightly larger. It’s a little awkward, and it sometimes tangles or catches at inconvenient times. And while the armor is fairly good for their range of motion, it’s also far heavier than they’re used to- a serious adjustment. Over time they’ve become used to it and are still quite agile, but they could certainly use far more of their potential without it.
