as much as i Hated cringeduos relationship pre atlas, i do respect that derap does genuinely care abt pangi deeply. like idk if people realize that the reason derap was so upset at subz was specifically bc he killed pangi.
like zam may have been unsettled by subz suddenly killing a peaceful player in front of him in general idk, but for derap i am almost certain that he was upset bc subz killed pangi specifically bc i garuntee u he wouldnt have cared even a bit if it was like kab, 4c, woogie, jepexx, etc unless zam showed he cared. in fact, caring for pangi is the only thing derap seems to be firm on and smt he wont change regardless of zams opinion on the matter bc pangi is one of the very few people he wants to protect on the server
one of his biggest reasons for not wanting to team w pangi was bc he knows pangi is a peaceful player who doesnt want to fight, so he didnt want to drag pangi into conflicts that would only end up w him suffering or dying for simply being associated w derap. he seemed to completely stop trusting ash, one of two people he called a day 1, the Moment he found out ash tried to kill pangi. like yes the trust was already faltering bc ash lied to him for no reason but he still wanted to talk to him and figure things out before making his decision but that went out the window when he found out abt the pangi thing.
and like as weird as it was of derap to invite pangi (repeatedly btw) to zaun despite already agreeing w zam that they wouldnt be inviting anyone and to lie saying he never invited pangi, it wasnt solely to make mapicc look bad or to make zaun look better. its also bc he is dogshit at communicating his own desires and needs, and i dont think he Wanted to admit that he disagreed w zam. that he wanted to invite pangi to zaun, that he WANTS pangi to be w him. to be with them.
which is like, it ties into deraps deeper issues w insecurity and struggles w direct communication despite scolding zam for his struggles w it bc he acts like he is selfish nd that he has these expectations of zam but he always puts zams opinions and wants above his own at the end of the day. always. if he had ASKED, if he'd just talked to zam and expressed how much it meant to him to have pangi at zaun, zam would have been fine w it!! he doesnt seem aware of just how close derap is w pangi past knowing pangi is one of three people derap trusts entirely, but he cares for derap and i think he wouldve accepted it if derap truly expressed that he wants pangi there.
but he didnt. he lied. bc hes scared to ask for what he wants, hes scared that asking for anything from zam in a direct way will drive him away and w him already feeling like he cant possibly have a place next to zam when zam already has someone he seems to want by his side, hes doing what he thinks he "needs" to in order to stay w zam as long as he can even if he feels like zam leaving him is inevitable.
and honestly i can only see this being solved if zam is able to notice and talk abt it w him bc derap will never do it himself. even before zam and atlas, his manipulative and unfair way of treating pangi was a result of his own refusal to communicate bc him requiring pangi to prove himself trustworthy time and time again in increasingly drastic ways was him wanting to continue clinging to pangi but struggling to do so w his paranoia, trust issues, and general insecurity. bc no!! asking someone for hearts to prove their trust is Not communication. confronting them and accusing them of not caring abt u nd making them prove their care so many times before u believe they actually do is not communcation 😭

I dont interpret ruan mei as evil because she’s autistic, not because autistic ppl cant be evil and terrible but because she has a very aeon-like complex that is intrinsically tied to her autism and special interest in life and aeonhood.
MORE UNDER THE CUT
Aeons are neutral about their Paths, like how Lan doesnt give a fuck about if you feel blessed by their genocide or not or how Sunday almost reached aeonhood but couldnt because he wasnt completely neutral about his stance etc.
Ruan Mei's pursuit of aeonhood is, in a way, very selfish, in the sense that she’s willing to sacrifice a lot for it but it’s also neutral in a very scientific and detached way. She’s a very detached person in general, and doesnt really allow herself attachments, so she’s okay with sacrificing things because hey, it doesnt concern her.
It’s very much tied to her autism because she has very Specific things that she cares about, and even when she cares its not in a way that’s easily understood by others.
Her actions dont come with malicious intent but because she’s so tunnel visioned on her pursuit of aeonhood, she fails to recognise that her understanding of life is very much lacking and very much, hurtful in ways that are not computed through logic and science.
Tumblr media
Like. She knows that her creations yearn for her affection but she is unable to give it back to them because 1) shes detached shes not particularly attached to them, whatever affection she forces herself to give would be fake 2) shes also super busy. So she entrusts them to the Trailblazer because she knows that TB would have the capacity and capability to care for them the way she couldn't. However, she fails to realise that her creations wants affection from HER, as their mother and creator. She knows she's hurting them but she doesn't entirely understand the root of the issue, so her solution, though a way of her showing her care, doesn't really solve the problem.
Tumblr media
Another example is her cloning the emanator of propagation. Her attempt at bringing back the bug wasn't because she wanted to destroy the world but to test the limits of her understanding of life, destroying the world was simply a consequence that she didnt care about. That sounds bad, but it doesn't mean that she wanted to destroy the world, she just didn't care if getting results meant sacrificing everything else. However, she also knew it would have been a disaster, so she set a self destruct function AND assigned TB to take care of it. She doesn't realise that her attempt at cloning alone was extremely reckless and putting TB through it by deceiving them, even though she ultimately had "good" intentions, was hurtful at a personal level. In the process of trying to make her experiment more safe for the sake of others on the space station, she deceives TB and inevitably hurts their feelings and trust.
Ruan Mei wants to go further and further, but the part of her that has learned socialisation and does truly care about the welbeing of others, actually stops her from doing so, even if she may not necessarily realise it.
Ruan mei is someone who is not able to fully, properly CARE because she doesnt allow herself any forms of attachment, hence her apathy but she does SHOW care through her actions. However, because such care is not seen as natural, or even understandable by the vast majority, it goes under the radar. Most people don't understand her way of caring, and they don't try to. This is evident both in game and in real life by people who couldn't properly grasp her character in the quest.
Sorry that I digressed quite a bit but it ties in a lot with apathetic autistic people, and even just apathetic people in general who DO show care but it goes unnoticed and is scrutinised because it doesnt immediately come off as comprehensible and overtly caring to neurotypical people. It's common for people to think autistic behaviour is uncaring or dismissive, because they don't see us playing by their rules and don't make the effort to understand at all. Ruan Mei is a character who is extremely autistic coded, and her devotion to her research reads very much as an autistic person with a special interest. Special interests can cause the tunnel vision that Ruan Mei exhibits, and autistic people can and have neglected ourselves and others in the pursuit of our special interests. It doesn't mean that we don't care about other people anymore, we just prioritise our special interest above all else.
Tumblr media
Ruan Mei isn't evil, shes just neutral and just doesnt have the same capacity to be emotional and attached as everyone else. The things that are important to her, aren't as important to others. The things that are natural to her, just aren't natural to others.

hi, hope you're having a good day! i loved your essay on not feeling safe around cis women, but when i read it to my bf, he noted (on the passage about harassment) that in the few instances he's known male acquaintances to catcall or even assault women, it has been motivated at least in part by genuinely overpowering attraction and desire. do you think this is a fair assessment? more generally, i find your stance that abuse is generated by power imbalances rather than personal failings really compelling. but when i've discussed it with others, a lot of people really resist it. for example, i recently had a debate about the concept of narcissistic abuse with a friend who argued that specific patterns of abuse are sufficient to categorise a person as a "narcissist", and that the term is useful to describe and predict the future actions of people who engage in these patterns of behaviour, regardless of their power position (though they considered it a personality trait rather than a pathology). i have my own thoughts on this, and i know you're not the only person who has made these points, but seeing as you're open to discussion on tumblr i figured i would ask if you have a particular response to this kind of thing?
i'd say ive never heard or seen any published case of a "narcissist" managing to abuse their teacher, boss, or anyone who has authority over them! The power imbalance is what makes the abuse possible. Obviously humans are capable of malicious intent. But it's very hard to abuse someone who doesnt need or rely upon you or whom you dont hold power over.
as for the catcalling thing, it's very well established that women are actually more likely to be catcalled when they are marked as more vulnerable -- either because of other visible marginalizations they have such as fatness or Blackness, or even when they look more dressed down & tired compared to when they are more confident feeling and dressed up. You dont get cat called more the hotter you are, whatever that might mean. you get cat called when a guy sees you as someone he can easily prey on. and thats also why cis women cat call me more than like beefy conventionally hot masc dudes.

I agree with prev anon that reader was a bit frustrating because she said some out of pocket stuff (though it wasn’t intentional or said out of maliciousness) but Atsumu making an effort and trying for 3 weeks is the bare bareeeee minimum come on!!! 😭We gotta stop giving credit to men who do the bare minimum in terms of being a nice respectful person. Like if someone was into me I’d HOPE they would be nice and “try” while they were making an effort to date me???
Especially cause all it took was one comment for him to revoke it and throw it in her face. What does that say about him 😭 reader’s mess up was due to nerves and not stopping to think before she spoke, Atsumu’s mess up was due to him knowingly choosing to perform an action that he was aware would hurt her on some level since he knew she was into him as well. Their convo outside their rooms could’ve been solved with an honest follow up conversation, but he decided to revenge fuck a stranger and make her a witness to it so he could punish her for making a petty comment towards him.
What she said wasn’t even false either because he did have a track record of bringing home multiple girls every weekend lmao if he doesnt like people pointing out his past behaviour then I dunno maybe demonstrate that you don’t engage in that behaviour anymore?! Not go out and immediately prove y/n right!!
okay yes. no okay yes I UNDERSTAND i understand. and i'm not saying we like praise him for the effort that's he's putting into it and the change in patterns that he's exhibiting, but more like aw man no yea this is actually the longest change in pattern that he's displayed.
(omg look another read more because i have so much to say/try to explain) but also it'll all be explained better in the next chapter lmao lmao. i will probably stop long explaining a lot of these and just let you guys read the next chapter and either like it or not HAHAHHA.
i feel like no one is -IN ANY WAY- skipping over the fact that the bs he pulled was shitty and he is an asshole because like yea no ur 100% right he's an asshole.
i just think that the layers that i built into twrt are kinda a lot and complex because it's not just "oh reader is super super into atsumu so why doesn't atsumu just date her instead of having sex with other people" its much more like "reader is keeping atsumu at arms length while still engaging with and flirting and practically fucking him while they're drunk" like reader specifically is not trying to be in a relationship with him while still doing relationshipy things because she's terrified of the effect that it'll have on a lot of aspects in her life and the hesitancy that she's feeling is super evident and real frustrating for someone who has, many times, tried to breech this line of oh let's actually date.
NOW IS ALL OF THIS AN EXCUSE FOR THE WAY THAT ATSUMU ACTED? yea no of course not but i just mean that it doesn't boil down to oh yea no reader has done NOTHING BUT want to be with atsumu she literally wanted to fuck maki like,,,, a few weeks prior to this conversation. and it wasn't as vindictive or shitty as atsumu's because of cOURSE IT WASNT but we don't really get to see atsumu's side or feelings in any of this the entire time bc its from reader pov. so it's hard to like,, understand the other side of it.
and i will say the comment that she makes outside of his door serves less as a reminder of his past and more of sudden change in tendencies. i don't know if that distinction makes SENSE but it does in my mind hehe.
also when i came up with the idea for this fic, this is always the way that i wanted the conflict to go. which became a bit difficult as it moved from being a oneshot to a chaptered fic and all of the feelings that came along with it. this shit is much less ouch when yknow- you dont have as much background as you do in the chaptered versions but i hope that chapter7 gives some insight? some better like oh yea ok yea tori you explained that really well, nice.

you said that the dark zodiac is based off of real people you know and characters. is it okay for me to ask the story behind them?
Aries is based on the deviant trope. An uncontrollable individual who lives a hedonistic lifestyle. They indulge themselves on toxic things, such as drugs, alcohol, smoking, etc. They are manipulative, and don’t care about other people’s feelings, especially if it gets in the way of things they desire. So Aries After Dark, I pictured as like that guy or girl at an edgy night club, who is dtf. Down to fuck and/or fight. This is based off of the negative traits of an Aries; dominate, stubborn, short tempered, unpredictable, selfish. I don’t know many aries in person, so it was hard to find inspiration for this based on real people, so I went with character tropes.
Taurus was a little more difficult, so it is loosely based off someone I know who is a Taurus that I don’t like. They’re lazy, and materialistic, and blame other people for their own faults and bad luck. So I combined that person with my character I made in Zodiac as Antagonists series, as a rich, self indulgent, greedy business man trope. I ended up with a character that has a princess/prince complex, that doesn’t really like to do anything, takes what they have for granted, and values materialistic and shallow things in life. Such as jewellery, expensive alcohol, money, etc. Taurus after dark is passive aggressive, sarcastic, and unambitious, and is too stubborn to change who they are, which is the crowning fault of this person I based this on.
Gemini is a complex one. Every bad ex I’ve dated has been a gemini. So in this I rolled them all in one. These people were two-faced, untrustworthy, inconsistent, high strung, fickle minded. As a lot of Gemini’s would testify, they do not like the stereotype that Gemini’s are crazy, or psycho/sociopaths, because their dual personalities and high anxious behavioural issues makes them hard to understand. Which is why I chose that quote “You’re a Psychopath” “I prefer creative”. It just illustrates the opinion of how others see Gemini, vs how they view themselves. So Gemini after dark as a character is a person who is indecisive, and fickle minded. They’re liars and backstabbers because they are incapable of keeping promises, and they know this, so they keep that part of themselves hidden upon first introductions. But they’re also confused by their own self. They don’t know what they want, they dont understand their own emotions. They’re not good with them.
Cancer, as I’ve mentioned, is heavily based off of who I was when I was a teenager and an early adult. So I’ll break down the imagery I’ve used to illustrate this. One thing that cancers are known for is sentimentality. They grow too attached to things. I’ve linked sentimentality with christian imagery, which also symbolizes my struggle with finding myself spiritually through religion. The crown of thorns and the crying Madonna symbolized martyrdom; I kept on sacrificing my own happiness, or rather giving it up. I consensually put myself in pain on purpose. I was drowning in my own pain and emotions, and to deal with that I over indulged myself in unhealthy habits. In the graphic I used smoking as an example, but for me it wasn’t smoking, it was food and drugs and sex. In terms of relationships, I fell in love too fast and too easily, and I would do anything for these people that I fell in love with, even if it meant carving my heart out for them. But as I grew up, and had to live through my share of Gemini’s (read above), I became more and more aromantic. Hence the Love is a lie image.
Leo is another personal one, because this one is talking about a very specific person in my life, who I won’t name, nor share my relation to them. Now I usually get along with leos; the people closest to me are leos. But this particular leo embodies all the negative traits of one. This person believes they are the protagonist of everyone’s story, and everyone else is an antagonist, or a supporting character. They surround themselves with “yes” people, to fuel the illusion that they’re always right and everyone else is wrong. This person does not swallow their pride, and has no intention to. Their pride is the most valuable thing they have, and the only thing that’s important to them. They’re vain, and materialistic. And their claws come out when someone threatens to take away their crown or bruises their pride, or takes something away from them. This person has no problem retaliating and ruining people’s lives. They would set the world on fire if they could. In short, this person is the real life Cersei Lannister.
Virgo I had a little fun with. I had this character idea of a conservative woman that people over look, but is actually a very dangerous person. So I played with the name Virgo, and used Christian symbolism, but I also balanced it with gothic, and witchy aesthetics, and created a story. Virgo’s appearance is very conservative. She’s very critical, and is never in a good mood. But she’s a mason jar that’s been over stuffed with evil that’s about to explode. She’s trying to control these ghosts that stir in her, but every once in a while, when something tries her patience, she acts out. She does not like to be messy, though, so she berates herself afterwards. Virgo after dark is probably one of the very few in this series that has a story behind it. I just visualized a woman in Salem, trying to hide her craft, and being the perfect image of christian puritan woman, but everyone knows there is something dark behind that white lace.
Libra is the reason why I started this series. The most common complaint I’ve seen is that people were growing tired of libra being depicted as light-hearted and soft. So, because of this, I focused on the traits superficial, self-indulgent, and manipulative. Libra’s were also said to be introverts, so I came with the idea of a lone-wolf type. So this aesthetic is inspired by my interpretation of Druella Rosier, Bellatrix Lestrange’s mother. I’ve role played her before, so I was able to draw imagery into this that would relate to her. So Druella, or rather Libra, is a born-rich woman, who is smarter, wiser, and more cunning than people take her for. She doesnt want to live on the name of her father, but make her own name for herself. All her successes are her own. She’s a boss bitch. She gets shit things done alone, and doesn’t need help from others. Libra would destroy your life from the inside out, and it would be right under your nose.
Scorpio’s are my baes. I’ve never met a scorpio that I didn’t like. With that being said, Scorpio’s in a negative light are frightening. They’re very passionate, but because of that they can get obsessive, possessive, jealous, controlling, resentful, suspicious, and dominating. Other people cannot touch what is theirs. What’s worst, is that Scorpio’s are exceptionally mysterious when it comes to emotions and what they’re feeling, so you never really know what they’re thinking or feeling. Scorpio is really based off of every character I’ve ever fallen in love with but would be extremely bad for me. Scorpio after dark is the bad boy that isn’t good for you, and you should not want to be with, and will never change no matter how hard you try. They’ve really sexual, as well, which keys in with the possessive and dominant traits. We’re talking about a Christian Grey type character. But a well written version. Just to make an emphasis of how dangerous this type of person is; most serial killers are born in November, including Charles Manson.
Sagittarius was a bit hard, because the only one that I knew in my life that I didn’t like, did not embody any of the traits of a sagittarius at all, not even the good ones. They were just one blah of a person. But the other ones that I knew, I knew as very adventurous people. They weren’t in the same place for long. So I started to think of any negative traits they had, and that was carelessness and tactlessness. So I constructed a criminal, “dare devil”, type of character that lives outside the law and does what they please. They don’t care about getting hurt, and if something bad happens they just call it part of the journey. The carelessness comes with them not thinking things through, how that this person doesn’t consider how their actions and words could harm other people. They’re knowingly breaking laws and rules, but with their overconfidence, they believe they wont get caught.
Capricorns I’ve always seen as the masculine version of virgo, which already comes with implications. So I based Capricorn after a character who is a capricorn, and that’s Tom Riddle/Voldemort. Capricorn after dark is a malicious figure of power that resides behind the curtains. He is Oz, if Oz was a fascist or the leader of the illuminati. We’re talking about an individual that is dangerous on a global scale. He is both death and the devil, but sees himself as a god. Every chaotic event that’s ever took place in history has been carefully planned and executed by this person, and you have no idea. He is not sentimental, he is not empathetic, he gives zero fucks about anyone. His scale of morality doesn’t exist, he just wants control and power to the highest degree. The kick of it, he doesn’t have to be one person.
Aquarius is the most unique Zodiac. It’s an air sign that’s symbolized by water, for some reason. They’re the dreamers, but I call them airheads. Not because they’re stupid, but because they have thoughts of grander. So for my Aquarius, I brought back from my old series, Zodiac Signs as Protagonists, and put it in the negative. If there was any generation to relate Aquarius to, it would be millennials, because we were born and raised during the rise of the age of Aquarius. So really, this is based off of the negative aspects of my generation. Delusions of grander. Regretting nothing. Unwillingness to conform. Shooting for the stars, and landing in the sun. Aquarius after dark is a person that is a pariah of progressiveness, but they wear that with pride. They believe their views are the correct ones, their way of life is the best way, that everyone else are the insane ones, but at the same time question the vitality of those that begin to sway to their way of thinking. They do not conform, they do not want normalcy of a modern society. Often times they don’t have a job because they don’t want to contribute to capitalism (or rather that’s their excuse), and they are more likely to participate in riots and protests. They believe they are changing the world for the better, one brick at a cop car at a time, but they end up hurting the cause they’re trying to support.
Pisces was pretty simple. This is also another one based off of me. My moon is pisces, so I found this one easy to portray. Pisces and Aquarius are very different. While Aquarius is “woke”, Pisces is living in a willful delusion. They float through life with their eyes closed and disassociate from reality, and make no move to change, even if they live in a constant state of misery. I used drug imagery, because psychological drugs, or downers, allow you to escape from reality and your problems, and bring you into a surrealistic world where real world issues don’t exist. That’s why it’s so easy for someone to become addicted to drugs, because it’s a temporary solution to escape reality, rather than the permanent solution which would be death. Religion has also been used to ignore facts and things you do not want to accept. For example, the idea of heaven was created because people did not want to cope with the fact that one day they will be dead and none of it would have mattered.

i have SOME THINGS to say about PARENTS in this show. i was in a child and youth care course and we talked about family structures and barbara coloroso’s parenting styles, so i have a bit of professional knowledge to go on
first lets get to the good parents: tom and sabine. they’re great! from what we’ve seen of them in the show, i’d go ahead and categorize them as backbone parents. aka, the good type of parent, that generally doesnt leave their kid with a bunch of lasting psychological damage. that isnt to say backbone parents cant be bad, either, or that tom and sabine are perfect, but they’re so far the best examples of parents we regularly see in the show.
for anyone who doesn’t know, some backbone parenting traits/styles include firm but simple and clear rules (mostly for the safety of the child), unconditional love, trust in and respect for their child, letting their child learn through natural consequences to their actions without letting them be harmed by the consequences instead of directly punishing them, etc
tom and sabine have shown trust in marinette countless times, though they sometimes seem unsure, like in Animaestro where they let her serve the macarons. they’ve done a good job teaching her. they don’t get angry with marinette when she does mess up. they support and encourage her interests, they were ready to move to new york if that’s what she wanted to do for her fashion career!
then. theres the worse parents. one of the bad parenting styles, jellyfish parenting, has two sub-styles. there’s actually a lot of jellyfish parents in the show, and two of them are chloe’s. in fact she’s got both types of jellyfish parents and im not surprised by chloe’s behaviour now that we’ve met both.
jellyfish parents tend to be, like the name suggests, go-with-the-flow and not firm at all. they tend to have no rules, but try to bribe their child to do what they want, or threaten them when the bribes don’t work. they’re sometimes emotionally absent, or overly clingy with their child.
one type of jellyfish parent is the type of parent who, like chloe’s dad, will give their kid whatever they want. if they have the means, they’ll buy the entire candy store for their kid. in a position of power like andre is, catering to his daughter’s every whim is usually easy. sometimes these types of parents had brick wall parents themselves, and when pushed too far will revert to the strict rules and threats of punishments that they were treated with by their own parents.
another type of jellyfish parent is more like chloe’s mom: mainly absent. they don’t have strict rules or punishments for their child because they arent there enough to enforce them. audrey can barely remember her own daughter’s name. maybe that’s intentional on her part, or maybe she just doesn’t care enough about chloe to try. she seems like she never really wanted kids anyways. she probably very intentionally leaves all the parenting to andre.
there’s another of these seemingly uncaring parents in the show, too. lila’s mom. she’s a classic example of the “gone before sunrise, home after sundown” parent. sometimes that type of parent goes out partying or whatever, but lila’s mom seems to just be the workaholic type as far as i can tell. still, there’s a lack of support and love from lila’s (possibly only?) parent. it’s a good explanation to why lila acts the way she does, but i won’t say it’s an excuse. i do feel bad that lila doesn’t have a firm and caring presence in her life, but its no reason for her to be the way she is. even chloe is less malicious, and still was less malicious since the beginning of the show.
thirdly, there’s the brick wall parent. a parent with strict and restrictive rules, with the threat of strong punishment if those rules are broken. they want control over their child, they rule with fear, and their word is law in the household. we have at least one of these parents in the series, too. gabriel agreste.
while gabriel, like audrey and lila’s mom, is rarely around, he has nathalie and the gorilla (and presumably others) to control adrien for him. there’s restrictive schedules, high expectations for adrien’s behaviour, a lack of trust and respect for adrien and his friends (as witnessed with Nino), and if fanfic and headcanons are anything to go by, he probably has a restrictive diet too. there’s so much restriction in adrien’s life that he literally ran away to go to school, and that he has nightmares of being locked up. adrien doesn’t get unconditional love, he doesn’t get support for his own interests from his dad.
we havent seen many other parents interacting with their kids in the show for more than an episode or two, so i won’t get far into those, but from what we’ve seen, alya’s parents aren’t home very much. nadia always seems to be at the news station whenever the newest akuma happens, we don’t really know anything about nino’s parents. alix’s dad seems to lean towards backbone parenting, and so does juleka and luka’s mom. it’s hard to tell with roger because he mostly shows up as “local idiot cop” instead of “sabrina’s dad”. there isnt enough information for me to really make an informed choice for what type of parents all those characters would be.
finally, a disclaimer: i am not an expert! these are fictional characters im analyzing, not real people. real people tend to be more complicated than characters in children’s cartoons. if you want to learn more about any of that kind of parenting stuff, i suggest reading barbara coloroso’s “Kids Are Worth It!” and maybe checking out her website. they’re a good starting point to understanding parenting and the parent-child relationship
