Taehoon says it's not that serious

Hansu notices something is wrong when you didn't come round for the third day in a row.

He takes his glasses off and sighs.

But Taehoon meeting your parents? It seems momentous. Like a huge milestone.

Like you're his and he's yours.

You're still mad at him (and embarrassed). But when could you ever say no to Taehoon? He asked to meet you, you reluctantly agreed, but this bastard hasn't even said a word yet.

"Don't interrupt," You weren't even saying anything! Taehoon throws you a glare just for good measure. But you notice the way he fidgets, and he never fidgets. He's self confident to the core.

"I didn't mean what I said. I-" did Taehoon actually gulp? "I'm serious about you. Pretty fucking serious, ok. And if meeting your family makes you happy then," he shrugs, "fine. Let's do it now."

Hold on. You think you hurt your neck from his whiplash.

You're torn between actually wanting to introduce your delinquent boyfriend finally to everyone, and wanting to grill him. It's not everyday Taehoon gets into his feelings.

The latter wins out.

"Wait," you cross your arms and continue blocking his way in, "why the change of heart?"

Taehoon glowers at you. He sees your relaxed stance, the way you have loosened up even as you're playing hard to get.

Whatever, he isn't a coward.

"You're the most important person to me. I want you to be happy."

Oh. If you weren't soft before, then you definitely are now. This man is going to be the death of you.

You reach out and pull his cheeks, smiling at him fondly. "You asshole."

"Cut it out," he bats at your hands half heartedly.

"Was that so hard?"

"Just let me in,"

"Don't you want me to say hi?"

... Something catches your eyes.

"Taehoon, you bought flowers?!"

ok this one IS an explicitly anti-maiko post, I'm not sorry. The Beach is a great episode except that a lot of it doesn't actually land for me in terms of relationship dynamics, and the extremely obvious one is maiko.

This episode does a lot of work for trying to establish the Fire Nation kids group dynamics and their motivations and insecurities. It's really good, especially for Azula. It also is where Zuko first starts confronting returning to the Fire Nation was not going how he expected and his growing internal conflict. But background to this is also further establishing the Zuko/Mai relationship, and lemme just say-- I do not think the writers do a good job.

This got long esp because of transcript quotes, so I put it under a read more, but here we go

Throughout the episode, Zuko and Mai snipe at each other, culminating in a blowup argument and a breakup. And then they literally just kiss and make up at the end of the episode, without doing anything to fix the things that led to the break up in the first place.

So let's start with the argument, work backwards from there, and back to their resolution. This is the argument:

Mai [Angrily.] Zuko, what is wrong with you? Zuko What's wrong with me? Mai [Scolding.] Your temper is out of control. You blow up over every little thing. You're so impatient and hotheaded and angry! Zuko [Snapping back.] Well, at least I feel something, as opposed to you. [Frontal view from behind Mai.] You have no passion for anything! You're just a big blah! Mai [Turns away from Zuko.] It's over, Zuko. We're done.

Immediately preceding this, Zuko shoves the Fire Nation kid talking to Mai at the party. Zuko's been jealous of him all episode and it's frankly not entirely unfounded. Chan invites Ty Lee to his party, Ruon-Jian notices Mai and invites her too-- Zuko is ignored until Azula insists on getting them both invites as well. Zuko's jealousy is out of line, and getting suspicious Mai likes Ruon-Jian is too, I can see why Mai would be annoyed by that. I can also see why it would trigger Zuko getting so upset when he sees Ruon-Jian talking to her at the party.

I... have trouble believing Mai would actually be so mad/upset that Zuko shoved another guy. It's a little controlling, but it is exciting and she had just been saying she as bored. It would make more sense to me if Zuko had taken this out on her -- she can't talk to people, etc-- as a reason for being upset-- because that would go better with her personal family trauma revealed later in the episode about being controlled and stifled.

I also think it's interesting Mai says Zuko's temper is out of control because other then going after Ruon-Jian, he's not really angry in this episode? He's annoyed about being handled by his father, he's dismissive of Mai's negativity at the party, he is suspicious and jealous but he doesn't do anything outright and hot tempered until then. What is Mai basing this on?

(after this Zuko IS very mean to Ty Lee at the fireside but we have no in show evidence he was before)

We certainly address Zuko's anger later at the fireside-- he's in conflict with himself, he is angry at himself. They sort of address Mai not feeling things and being a big blah in the fireside scene -- I'm gonna put the long block quote here lol:

Zuko [Camera pans right. Getting up.] Yeah, you do not believe in anything. Mai [Close-up; sarcastically.] Oh, well, I'm sorry I can't be as high-strung and crazy as the rest of you. Zuko [Aerial view of campsite. Walking up to the campfire.] I'm sorry, too. I wish you would be high-strung and crazy for once instead of keeping all your feeling bottled up inside. [Frontal view.] She just called your aura dingy. Are you gonna take that? Mai [Aerial view of campsite. Leaning back.] What do you want from me? You want a teary confession about how hard my childhood was? Well, it wasn't. [Close-up.] I was a rich only child who got anything I wanted ... as long as I behaved [Cut to shot of the sky.] and sat still, and didn't speak unless spoken to. [Close-up of Zuko.] My mother said I had to keep out of trouble. We had my dad's political career to think about. Azula [Side-view of campsite.] Well, that's it, then. [Close-up.] You have a controlling mother who had certain expectations, and if you strayed from them, you were shut down. That's why you're afraid to care about anything, and why you can't express yourself. Mai [Frontal view.] You want me to express myself? [Stands up and yells.] Leave me alone! Zuko [Side-view of campsite. Frontal view of Zuko.] I like it when you express yourself. [Approaching, attempting to put a hand on her shoulder.] Mai [Frontal view.] Don't touch me! I'm still mad at you. [She sits.] Zuko [Side-view of Mai.] My life hasn't been that easy either, Mai. Mai: Whatever. That doesn't excuse the way you've been acting.

Anyway, again, "the way Zuko's been acting" isn't really obvious to me-- he's a little snide after their fight and that's mean. And even here, Zuko is (I think fairly earnestly) trying to give her an outlet and she's not moved by it. It's not until he confesses he's angry at himself that she seems to forgive him, and it's unclear exactly what has moved her about this --

Zuko [Close-up.] Because I'm confused. Because I'm not sure I know the difference between right and wrong anymore. Azula You're pathetic. Mai [View from behind Zuko.] I know one thing I care about. [Walks up to Zuko. Frontal view.] I care about you. [They kiss.]

Press X to doubt because the whole episode has not shown once that Mai cares about Zuko. In fact, it's shown her rebuffing all his attempts to connect with her and the arguing with him. The episode hasn't shown me one piece of evidence that Mai even likes Zuko. There's nothing that's changed between the start of the episode and now, except that Zuko's addressed why he's angry and who he's angry with-- but it doesn't explain why that would make Mai not mad at him anymore. They haven't addressed any of their earlier grievances, but once again the writers use a kiss to show us everything's all made up and fine now, I guess. A kiss isn't a resolution, but I mentioned in another post, Book 3 does this a lot!

Also it's weird to me to just ignore Zuko expressing his conflict-- Mai has no opinion about that? This becomes a point of conflict a bit later in The Boiling Rock episodes, where Mai tells Zuko he is betraying his country, but again it's never really satisfactorily addressed. Azula at least calls him pathetic -- which isn't nice but isn't ignoring it either.

I would even go as far to say Ty Lee is shown to care more about Zuko when she calls him out for burning the family portrait and it's Ty Lee who says "I know you." That line just really hits me as very meaningful, but they opted not to give it to Zuko's girlfriend, not even to his sister, but to Ty Lee.

SO that is all to say-- if this is supposed to be a Maiko episode, it doesn't land. All it does is lay seeds for their dysfunction and conflict, then refuses to resolve it.

Of the popular Carmine interpretations (and carmine and kieran relationship interpretations) ive seen, none of them vibe quiteee right with me, so here's mine.

carmine is not a good sister to Kieran but she’s also not a bad person. not because she's not trying to be a good sis or because she doesn't like him, etc etc, but because they're at a point rn where they dont mesh right, and no one is stepping in to mediate or help them. Like the fact is Carmine Is an angry and abrasive person, who truly does care about her village and the people she cares about. She does love Kieran and Kieran does love her, and I think they both know that. But the way she treated Kieran Did contribute to his self doubt issues. Carmine and Kieran’s relationship Isn’t Healthy! But fuck, it’s not beyond repair. There’s still love there, there’s a future they can have. Being around a person who constantly and consistently gets angry, esp if that person is someone in power over u (like ur older sister) fucks a guy up! Even when you know that person loves you especially if you know they love you!

Carmine is an angry person and you know what sometimes people are like that! But look at them… I think they reached a point where Carmine shooing Kieran off was seen as just… Fine with everyone involved, because “(she) didn’t hit him or anything”. She's not lashing out at him trying to be awful she's not trying to hurt him.

Who’s giving Carmine a proper outlet? She’s got battle, is that helping anything? Her primary Pokémon is Morpeko, the Pokemon that switches between angry and happy. Does that make one side any less real than the other? Does being angry mean she’s not really loving? Does being loving mean she’s not really angry? Does loving Kieran mean she didn’t hurt him?

You’re a teen, and you’re angry. Over all sorts of things, some little and some large, but it doesn’t really matter as much as the fact that She’s Angry. It doesn’t matter why. It's not something you can help, you can put on a nice face, but you're still upset about things, and you should be! What do you do about it? You can't bottle it up. You’ll break, and you're bad at it anyway. Get mad at your teachers? Get in trouble. Get mad at your grandparents? Get in trouble. There’s no place safe to Feel Angry, but you Have to FEEL you can’t help it! You can’t help it. So you let yourself get a little angry at your brother, cause he doesn’t mind. You're still holding back, anyhow. He knows you still love him. He knows. He has to know right? It’s not that you dislike him, he just gets you so mad sometimes and- you still love him. You’re just bad at showing it, but he’s always stood up for you, you hear it even though he tries to keep it quiet. And maybe your brother's a little quiet and a little nervous, but he's always like that. it's fine. Things are fine.

i think if you wanted to create conflict between bruce and his children esp where their lives constantly being in danger and him indirectly (or directly. however you want to look at it) putting them on that path was important, the easiest thing to do would have been to explore the divide in bruce's decisiveness when it comes to his work versus when it comes to his children. bruce is very decisive as batman bc his ultimate goal as batman is a pretty clear-cut one: to save lives. his accountability is to innocents and contrary to that scene in the incredibles where the guy gets mad at bob for preventing him from falling to his death, no one is going to get mad at batman for saving their life. comparatively, bruce is a decisive wreck when it comes to his children. bruce wanting to give way to dick's independence is a hallmark of their dynamic in the 70s and 80s in particular, to the point that dick feels like he hasn't earned bruce's love and trust bc bruce lets him go too easily. and the 80s transition from dick retiring the robin mantle to jason inheriting it to jason dying in it is severely underrated for its collective impact on bruce. dc #574 is an issue forever burned into my brain bc it juxtaposes bruce's earlier hardline decision to tell dick to retire from robin when he nearly falls to his death with bruce's present decision not to do the same to jason when he nearly dies in their confrontations with the mad hatter. if you notice, he does ask jason if he wants to quit, but he doesn't take the option out of jason's hands the way he did with dick, and that's something that makes jason's subsequent death all the more striking and contextually horrific bc it goes to the root of bruce always being in a state of asking himself whether he's wrong for his position as an enabler. bruce doesn't want to overstep and stifle any of the robins but when their lives are in the most danger he finds himself at the edge of a cliff wondering whether to keep standing or to take the fall and deface himself in an effort to keep them safe first. the product of that sequence in the 80s events should tear him up inside, forever, and i think knightfall while i love it to no end is an arc that views its conclusion as "we've solved this now time to move on to other fucked up pastures" even though it would have been more sensible to acknowledge that this is a fear and hesitation bruce will live with forever bc this is precisely what being a parent is. not knowing when you're doing too much or too little and having to live with the terror of not knowing until something goes wrong and you have to try to fix it. and you do that for the rest of your life bc that's how much you love your children

I am sleep deprived and my mind is a mess so this might not make a whole lot of sense. Esp if you're not familiar with the musical. Do not expect greatness cause you wont find it lol

The story begins not with Pete or Vegas but with Porsche because he is Christine in this au. He joins the Opera House owned by idk.. Italians or something, as a dancer. All the bodyguards are ballet dancers in this universe (imagine Big as a ballet dancer and cry with me). They’re trained by Chan (madame Giry. Fits perfectly if you ask me). Porsche quickly becomes best pals with a fellow dancer Pete, they might even live together like in the show.

The Phantom is obviously Vegas. He has the mask and everything cause his asshole dad mutilated him when he was a kid and made him join the circus to earn money. It’s all very tragic and sad really. He spends years being laughed at till one day he’s done with it. He kills his dad and escapes. I’m imagining rain and thunder and tears and then finally peace and quiet that he finds in the basement of an old opera house. He puts on the mask & becomes the Phantom over several years, spending his days tormenting the owners of the opera and writing music in his dungeons. Living his best life lol

Back to the present. One day as Vegas is wandering the hallways like the creep he is, he hears Porsche singing and gets inspired. He is like omg I can make that man a star and make him sing my music. (Also the current primadonna sucks and their singing makes Vegas’ head hurt… lets say it’s Tawan cause we hate him lol. Vegas has been trying to get rid of the bastard for a while now) It’s going great - Porsche is easy to manipulate cause of his childlike dreams of an angel of music that his dead father (or mother?) would send him. Also Porsche is hot and kind and Vegas is kinda delulu for him. He hasn’t had any human contact for years and he is desperate for some love. Porsche gives him a taste of it cause he thinks Vegas is an angel so he speaks with affection to him. Porsche’s bestie Pete notices something is off and keeps an eye out but doesn’t do anything for now, cause Porsche seems to be doing well even if he’s acting a lil weird. Also who could imagine the reality of the situation lol. Pete does see more than the rest tho, he has seen Vegas in the shadows before, but he doesn't connect the dots. Yet.

Then out of nowhere the Italians decide to sell the opera house to Tankhun. Yes Tankhun cause imagine him running an opera. And Arm or something cause he needs a partner. Oh maybe Tay? Idk this needs more thought than I’m capable of at the moment. Anyways.. Vegas is mad cause Tankhun is even worse at running the opera than the previous owners. Even so he does manage to get rid of Tawan and get Porsche on stage, but then fucking KINN shows up and is like hot diggity dog.. Porsche is hot and I love him and Porsche loves him back (they are childhood friends like Christine and Raoul), which simply makes Vegas lose his last marble. He’s been spending months at this point teaching and seducing Porsche and it's taken a lot of work to get Porsche on stage and he’s not about to let Kinn steal him so he goes and kidnaps him (porsche). Takes him to his dungeon and tries to convince him that life there with him could be kinda nice. Cause look at all the good he's done for him. Porsche is listening till his curiosity wins and he tears Vegas' mask off and is disgusted much like Christine the first time she saw the Phantom’s face. Vegas is hurt and lets him go. Convinces himself that Porsche just needs more time, that he just needs to try a little harder. That he has to work more to get that love that he craves.

Porsche is traumatised after the kidnapping. Pete is worried, he sees that something is really wrong even though Porsche doesn't tell him what exactly happened. Kinn is an oblivious idiot, who at this point only cares about this Phantom dude sending everyone threatening notes lol. He and Tankhun decide to disobey everything Vegas is asking for and let Tawan back on stage which leads to no good. Vegas snaps and kills someone. Porsche runs to the rooftop, Kinn follows, they confess to each other and kiss and Vegas’ heart breaks and he brings down the chandelier.

Pete our best boy who has been watching everything go down from the sidelines is like ok this has turned from weird to FUCKED & he decides to investigate. Cause he is a sneaky lil guy and doesn’t like it when his friends get hurt for no good reason. He takes it upon himself to go find this opera ghost and stop him. He finds the entrance to the dungeons behind Porsche’s mirror and goes down there. In the dungeon he is greeted by a very sad scene of Vegas crying his heart out. What a pathetic creature. Except the creature is insane and once he notices and catches Pete he ties him up and spews all his anger and sadness on him. Vegas thinks Pete is a nobody whom no one will miss (and sadly he’s somewhat right) (but Vegas does know who Pete is cause he knows everything) and decides to keep him there to torment while he wallows in his sadness. Very unfortunately the rest of the opera don’t even notice Pete is gone (they’re too busy fixing things and getting their shit back together and Porsche is too busy with Kinn). After a few days of silence they’re thinking - finally we pissed off the phantom so much that he left. When in reality Vegas is planning his revenge. Pete is trying his best to convince him to leave Porsche alone cause obviously Porsche doesn’t like him back but Vegas being the man he is can not let his grudge go. And even though he doesn’t even like Porsche much anymore (cause his heart is opening up to someone else), he wants to take revenge on Kinn.

There’s mad tension between VP. Pete isn’t afraid of what's underneath Vegas’ mask because he has his own scars too. Both physical and emotional. They do share asshole fathers in every universe. They bond over it. And Vegas gets a glimpse under Pete's mask when he notices the way Pete reacts to him and his anger. Something inevitably does happen between them but it doesn't lead to any good because Vegas still thinks he is unlovable (boy thinks love has to be earned and is going about it in all the wrong ways) and he is obsessed with his revenge plot; and Pete our dear Pete thinks Vegas is in love with Porsche cause he thinks himself unlovable too.

The masquerade happens (oh imagine how happy Tankhun would be to throw this party), Vegas crashes it and promises to bring everything down unless they perform his opera. Realising all his efforts to change Vegas' mind have been in vain and Vegas still cares more abt Porsche than him, Pete escapes to go warn his friends about his actual plans. In a way he also rejoins the masquerade when he returns to his life. There is much to be said about masks and stuff in this au but again - my brain has not the capacity to do it rn. Finding out Pete is gone makes Vegas even madder cause he does feel things for him even if he's in denial about it. Cause Pete is the only person ever to not flinch when Vegas looks at him. There's that kindness he's been looking for in Pete but he doesn't let himself see it.

Kinn comes up with his shit plan to catch the Phantom despite Pete’s arguments that it won’t work. The opera happens and everything goes to shit. Vegas once again kidnaps Porsche. Kinn shows up at the dungeon and gets almost killed. They are yelling at each other when Pete arrives. He overhears Vegas making Porsche choose between him and Kinn and he can't take it anymore. He goes all out along the lines of 'you stupid moron, I love you, i can't sing, I'm a shit dancer but I love you and why am I not enough???' Like why is Porsche the end goal here when he obviously hates Vegas? Vegas, Porsche and Kinn are dumbfounded at this. Vegas didn’t really believe that Pete would like him for real. but pete goes on about how vegas ripped pete's mask off and now he's gonna leave him stranded in this world when they could have something together and for what?? It takes vegas a moment to understand what's happening. Kinn uses the opportunity and shoots or stabs or whatever Vegas, takes Porsche and runs. Porsche asks Pete to come with them but he refuses. Kinn is a dick and he drags Porsche away. Pete holds Vegas very fairytale like, very tragic and beautiful. "Say you'll share with me one love, one life time, say the word and I will follow you.."

When the others come to the dungeon to get the phantom, they find it empty. Vegas and Pete have disappeared but they live. Away from all this, somewhere else. Maybe not happily ever after but they live.

If Rhaenyra wasn’t a Targaryen, people would have no problem calling her incompetent, stupid, paranoid, hating her for being spoiled, feminine and refined, and shipping Daemon with GNC Nettles, a dark-skinned, foul-mouthed, filthy, and clever bastard peasant girl who managed to tame a dragon and rode into battle (unlike Rhaenyra).

Rhaenyra was foolish and cruel when it came to her ruling decisions. Instead of sending Joffrey into the field, utilizing his young dragon’s quick speed for reconnaissance against the fled Hightower-Targaryens (or even sending Addam Velaryon to do so and leaving Joffrey as the rider in the Dragonpit), Rhaenyra instead planned a lavish induction ceremony to name him Prince of Dragonstone (using the city’s precious resources strained by war and winter for a party, exactly like Sansa in TWOW, and flaunting her obviously bastard son as the center of it). Instead of offering the Green lords, including the leaderless and ironborn-harried Lannisters, pardons to end the war, Rhaenyra openly awaited the day she could display the heads of the Green leaders as traitors, ensuring that the pro-Green lords would never surrender to her. Convinced that all her new dragonriders were determined to betray her Rhaenyra ordered the arrest of the loyal Addam Velaryon, heir and probable son of Corlys; the decision lost her not simply a dragon and dragonrider, but her most powerful lordly ally and Hand, half her army and her entire remaining naval force. Having concluded that Nettles and Daemon had become romantically involved, Rhaenyra ordered Lord Mooton to execute her while she and Daemon rested at Maidenpool, ordering her bannerman to murder a guest (in defiance of anciently and sacredly held guest right), an innocent (in defiance of the Father’s justice), and a young woman (in defiance of the rules of chivalry). It’s only half a joke to call Rhaenyra “Maegor with teats”; Maegor had fallen specifically because, through his cruelty and anti-Faith policies, he had lost the respect and fealty of lords and smallfolk alike, and Rhaenyra did the same.

Alicent did not force her to make these decisions. Neither did Aegon II. Rhaenyra was a dumb and a cruel woman on her own merits. Let’s hold her accountable and take responsibility of her actions. Unprepared to rule, convinced that her bloodline and her father’s decree alone were sufficient to ensure her rule would not be challenged, Rhaenyra failed to assert herself in the admittedly patriarchal society of Westeros. Vindictive to her enemies and foolish to her allies, Rhaenyra was simply a poor queen.

there was still enough food and articles of clothing left behind in the castle's reserves for a party and show of power to solidify her and her sons' places to courtiers aka, the nobles both supporting her and those who might not...after all it is the nobles who have enabled her usurpation -> it's when she had to flee KL that she actually had to sell her crown and thus indicating some lack of private funds, not before

It's not as if she and her sons were poor as heck BEFORE she had to flee KL. Yes, she should have thought more about how the smallfolk viewed her as well, and to that, I'd also say to place any other person in her family in her position and they'd do the same. Alicent only wouldn't because she had already crowned Aegon. BUT WARS ARE EXPENSIVE, and after she runs out of her own private funds--even if she had just gave it up getting food for the KL commoners:

the Tyrells remained neutral in the bulk of the war because their lord was a child (the Reach seems the number one supplier of grains, vegetables, and especially fruits) and the Hightowers were their "neighbors" who probably would have also tried to block their hypothetical efforts to send food and supplies to Rhaenyra in KL. Even if the Tyrells didn't declare neutrality and fought for her or tried to support her and tried to send food and supplies to her AND even demanded monetary compensation for some reason -- if Rhaenyra gave up her Dragonstone $ to feed the KLers, she'd have no way to pay the Tyrells declared for her and thus no way to feed the commoners. And whether or not the Tyrells demanded compensation, again, the Hightowers would go after them or try to block their wagons of food and supplies.

Do you think she wouldn't have a lavish coronation or investiture with all the ceremonies for Aegon if there was s full-on winter happening so as to take power from Rhaenyra? If not, you're joking yourself, because the whole point of her leaving Viserys' body to rot and pressing the council to name Aegon was to steal time from Rhaenyra and give Aegon the seeming legitimacy right to the throne. When Alicent had the opportunity, she flaunted Meleys' head in the streets of KL, causing several crowd members to try to flee for the gates in fear of retaliation:

This was also a display of dominance to legitimize Aegon's rule in the eyes of a certain public. It tipped the scales of public confidence in Aegon's ability to protect them against the greens, esp after Aegon almost died and was unable to perform his everyday--much less military--duties when he got his disabling burns, unable to get out of bed and having to let Aemond become his Prince Regent. There was an immediate effect proving my point.

Sure, Alicent had more money to expend, a possible surplus, that Rhaenyra did not but bc of those circumstances, she neither had the need to hold back on public displays. And in lieu of the usual highborn-aristocratic ignoring smallfolk needs, she neither had the intent nor concern for any smallfolk needs. If we want to talk about morals or ethics, she'd always prioritize her son's and factions' ambitions or maintenance of position over them...remember that she never performed any sort of noteworthy enough deed for the smallfolk for it to be even recorded in any text. And if we want to talk about strategy, well...she scared the commoners so much she had to lock the gates to prevent the hysteria and movement of bodies from getting to a point that could have gotten really out of hand. Of course, good that she got those gates closed, but displaying the dragon head knowing as if this would bring some the same sort of assurance to KLers as it probably did to her in the same ways and levels was not...wise so much as an aristocratic habit with negative consequences.

So again, why is Rhaenyra made to be the worst person of this bunch when she herself decides to quickly name her oldest remaining son her heir and publicly so, even more so because he is suspected as a bastard so she could give him a stronger claim.

Corlys is the one who says they should pardon every single one, including Rhaenyra's brothers who both were offered terms of surrender and safety but both flouted them with Aemond killing her son and Aegon--2x--calling for her head and calling her a "whore". Reminvder, Aemond killed Lucerys and Aegon threw a feast for it BEFORE Blood & Cheese. Nah, they were never going to give up even before Aegon's son, Jaehaerys', death.

Another reminder, Jaehaerys I let go one of the men who helped Maegor, and Alaric Stark resented him for it for a long time since the same guy killed his older brother or was responsible for it in a coup. With the context of a war the couple still had to fight, it's not a surprise nor totally unjustified that they both said they couldn't spare traitors. HOWEVER:

Not Rhaenyra, the one who makes the final decision. RHAENYRA EXPRESSLY DECIDES [above pics]:

She would send envoys to Storm’s End and Casterly Rock, offering fair terms and pardons after she had put an end to the usurper’s brothers, who were in the field against her. “Once they are dead, the rest will bend the knee. So anon is misinforming. She said to kill her brothers (one a kinslayer and the other the guy who usurped her and threw a party celebrating Lucerys' death), not the lords who supported them...unless they decided to keep fighting. She is doing exactly what anon says she is not doing!

This is another instance, too, where Rhaenyra shows a will that is not just subservient to Daemon, btw.

And Daeron nor his uncle, Lord Ormund Hightower were going to give up bc both had a direct interest in Aegon being king. More than anyone else! Why? Because this was their opportunity to support their closest blood (Otto, Ormund's uncle and thus Aegon's first cousin once removed) to have influence from the throne itself. The Hightowers would this have the most power over every other Green supporting lord, esp since the Tyrells were sitting out for their own protection with their lord just being a baby...Again, read the pics!**

The greens were the ones who usurped her in the first place and by how they took the funds from the royal treasury in order to weaken her for future invasion, I'd say that they were determined to win or die. Aemond would never go down without a fight, mother or not, Aegon had sworn to kill Rhaenyra after she crowned herself twice AND received multiple burns from his attempts to actually fight. After Helaena's death, I doubt Alicent would ever want Rhaenyra alive (again, if Alicent hadn't usurped Rhaenyra and turned her kids against her, her kids and grandkids would all be still alive bc what lord can seriously destroy or threaten the Targs with all their dragons outnumbering those the first 3 conquerors had?! And no, Daemon wouldn't do shit because he only ever targeted a green after Luke died He never initiated a fight, and seemed to just ignore them before Viserys died. Very confident in his own skills).

And once more, Rhaenyra already offered her siblings the chance to surrender, blaming Alicent and Otto for their treachery. Even her brothers. The belief that Daemon would go against her completely comes from the belief that he did not recognize her authority, follow her lead, or have a very strong or respect-full bond with her, and honestly there is no evidence nor suggestion of such a thing.

Otto is the one to offer Dalton Greyjoy a seat as master of ships on the council, the greens basically the ones first to want and invite him to join the war:

HERE is a post on the greens, the blacks, and Dalton Greyjoy. Otto was the one to think of inviting the ironborn to fight for the greens. If the greens hadn't invited Dalton to join the Lannisters would be less aggrieved. And if the Lannisters didn't want to be so exposed to the ironborn, they either shouldn't exist (bc the ironnborn are going to be themselves regardless of who rules or who asks them over, really, but the invitation made the invasions number more than they would have been by directing Dalton's interests and giving it license) or they should have not joined the greens in usurping Rhaenyra in the first place. If this system has the monarch and nobles share power (as happens in a feudal monarchy), then the responsibility for change also rests on the lords themselves. And there are limits to what the lords are willing to sacrifice or risk to stay in said power. The Targs are not more nor less evil than those lords for acting similarly.

the other side of the hate towards the Targs is their supposed refusal to "respect" those same laws and customs towards succession, gender roles, behavior, etc or follow them to the letter to be "better" rulers. So which is it? The Targs are the enemy of the good and poor, vulnerable Andal-FM Westerosi nobles and smallfolk (argument of them being too disrespectful and culture-destroying colonizers/tyrants) -- OR -- are they not progressive enough to lead the Andal-FM Westerosi into a better world? (argument of them being a plague on Westerosi)

this is a feudal, monarchist society and Andal-Westerosi are not exempt from trying for power and being violent, even having tried in the past to marry into the Targ household to have dragons themselves (Lannisters and Rhaena). The Targs themselves can be and have been manipulated by other house members.

some have tried to argue with me that Alicent is a better ruler/queen for Westeros. Alicent. Alicent, who herself comes from a background that wishes to subjugate anyone who is not legitimate, pale, aristocratic and male. Alicent, who is a heavy-duty blood purist who never looked out for other women. Not a one. Never herself pushed for policies making any person's life better. Even seizes power from another woman entirely for herself and her house's patriarchal prestige and power by using the status of her kids being Targ scions and dragonriders themselves to obtain more power. Apparently, because Alicent is more strategic, her traditionalist-Faith-driven misogyny and proven attempts to suppress female autonomy don't matter in the assessment of her leadership, but it definitely matters for Rhaenyra (the person Alicent purposefully targets) ! Same for her kids, but even worse as all are mentally checked out, more entitled, actually violent and rapists for no reason, or too lazy.

It's not about Targness and people loving Targs, it's just that the Targs incidentally happen to be the people in power that everyone else wishes to borrow or steal power from.

No matter who Rhaenyra was before King's Landing or after, Rhaenyra was "vulnerable" to this due to her gender's inequitable access to higher positions of power in Westeros. Because it was never about her character for the lords/the greens/Alicent, it was about her gender.

You try a person long enough, they are more likely (not definitely, LIKELY) to bite back or use any chance to gain back power. Though like Alicent, Aegon, Aemond, and Daeron in performing blood purist hate (or at the very least using blood purity) Rhaenyra was never a tyrant before King's Landing and the greens' usurpation, nor was she without self-control nor untrusting even with her being impatient and impulsive.

that's actually going to be a very big talking point in the next few chapters because family's the most important thing to them, right? it's family above all else, the money, the business, everything. and a big part of that is because price doesn't run his business through fear and manipulation like makarov and graves, he relies on trust and loyalty which makes for a stronger crew. and now, here's someone who has been unconditionally loyal to them (moreso than some of their own people) and they've not only betrayed her but outright mistreated and punished her. that's going to cause some major in-house problems esp regarding gaz who has never once doubted her.

("You're better than this" "Nope, not really, you've had about 20 years more training" / "You're just trying to stall me" "Interesting theory, care to discuss?" / "That's horrible" "Funny, though?" / "You're even looking cheery! And is that a twinkle in your eye?") + the fact she canonically says she's not good at explaining things. I don't have really any shame about anything that I like because life is too short, and I'm fully on board & excited for canon Sorvus in future seasons - but I still do like aged up Ellis x Soren once they're in their 20s and aged up Soren and Opeli once he's in his 30s. I think Ellis would balance him out personality wise, both have big compassionate hearts, & they'd have a ton of fun together. I also always love younger men pursuing older women, I think, because society stigmatizes 'aging' for women as being something undesirable (which is just so dumb) and Opeli is pretty AF and it'd make Viren roll over in his grave. hiya! first, love the podcast and both of your senses of humor. second, i recently got to the part in your magician's apprentice ep where you suggest the clara/jane austen kissing comment was "something for the fellas," which seems like a continuation of the other times you two have been (not unjustifiably) critical of a lot of the portrayal of queer chars on DW, and i wanted to offer an alternate perspective - not in a "you're wrong and i'm mad at you" way, just in a "here's a perspective to think about if you'd like to" way. also, i'm not expecting a response (in fact, i think i'd find one embarrassing bc of how long this is) or for y'all to change, just tossing this out there

for context, i got into doctor who as a middle schooler at the beginning of my realizing-i-was-bi-and-nonbinary-in-a-homophobic-household journey. and as a result, jack harkness was Important to me. in fact, i think there's a poll that went around tumblr a month ago where 12% of this site's userbase said doctor who was the first place they saw an earnest depiction of a queer char. jack does plays into bi stereotypes, but he still has depth and likability, and i think that's more important than deciding he doesn't fuck, esp in 2005. plus, he and torchwood were created by rtd who is himself gay, so i'm willing to cut him some slack

i agree that the vastra/jenny "actually, she's my WIFE" exchange is mostly moffat looking for praise, but that scene was also Important to me as a closeted kid who could only fantasize about being so open about my sexuality. and last year, i /did/ get a little thrill when i was getting a haircut and the hairdresser (who /did/ give off homophobic vibes) asked me after my Person left, "are you two sisters?" and i could say no

regarding clara, my view of moffat's misogyny in writing DW has always been "he /is/ aware that a lot of the audience is women and kids and when he thinks to, he does write to those ppl, he's just also infected with the views-women-as-lesser parasite and doesn't make enough conscious choices to battle it." if you'd asked me if clara's bisexuality was /for/ any particular audience segment, i'd say i'd never thought about that before, but if it was for anyone, it was probably for the queer girls. i esp feel that way bc she's followed by bill (and yaz, though that wasn't moffat's doing). i also like that clara said that in front of her class! it's nice to see a teacher char be open about her bisexuality bc of how social reactionaries often rush to "think of the children!" and criticizing schools and teachers as their first line of offense. plus, gay teachers were my rocks in high school, and i loved hearing about their lives bc it made my own future feel more solid

in sum, if the metric for a portrayal of a queer char is "was this scene written thoughtfully and to make queer audience members seem seen?" what might seem cringey and forced to one queer person could feel very affirming to another. i think due to DW's intended younger audience, things fall into the affirming bin more often than expected, and i think they're also /intended/ to be affirming more often than expected. i'd be as annoyed as hell by all these scenes if i saw them for the first time today, but i remain glad they exist for the good they did for kids back then and (who knows?) maybe still today

Hiya! Thank you for the thoughtful message! I will say I do totally get what you're saying. In fact, I remember being a closeted queer teen in the 2010s and I felt the exact same way. I thought it was super cool to see a bisexual character on TV, and I remember when the 11th Doctor would have throwaway lines about, yknow, romances with other men or whatever I thought that was pretty cool too. I loved Jack back in the day! It's certainly not my place to tell a person that they're not valid for appreciating representation! I think any kid who saw something relatable or inclusive in DW is a big win. I do still feel like looking back and watching it as an adult with more context; we can get a sense that it could've been better! A lot of it reflected attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people from 10-20 years ago, that I think we've largely moved past. I feel like there's nothing inherently wrong *or* invalidating about pointing that kinda stuff out. With regards to Moffat specifically, I get frustrated with Moffat because I think we're all in agreement that we can do better than him to write representation, yeah? Moffat is very "tell don't show" about his characters' queerness in a way that I find personally frustrating. If Clara is bisexual, that's awesome!! I'd love for Moffat to have shown us this instead of just an offhand line about it. His track record is just really bad (anyone who has seen Sherlock can attest to this lol). That's why we are always kind of feeling like his inclusion of LGBTQ+ representation comes across in bad faith (i.e. queerbaiting, using queerness as setup/punchline, or just kinda trying to score points from the progressive viewers).

I'd add that I do think there's been some great LGBTQ+ representation on DW in the past and present. I can't be the only one who loved to see Donna being the parent of a happy, thriving nonbinary trans person. That brought me a lot of joy to see on my screen in a time that is SO fucking hostile for trans people (transfeminine people in the UK in particular have it really bad). More of that please, Rusty. Lastly, I should say our show puts us at a disadvantage by design in terms of good faith criticism, because we're literally not watching the show in a way that makes sense. So a lot of stuff we're saying is basically watching the show completely devoid of context and we're just trying to have a bit of fun and share our thoughts; I do think we've ate dirt on this 1000 times over it's part of the fun when our listeners get mad because we were just Completely Wrong. Like what the hell happens in the Zygon Inversion?? Or Heaven Sent?? We don't know but everyone is mad because we didn't have that context. I really disliked Clara and got at totally different read on her, now I'm much more cool with her as a character. If there's stuff we're missing that's kind of part of the fun. At the end of the day we're just two goobers with microphones trying to have a bit of fun and you're ten billion percent allowed to disagree with everything we say about DW. I think this is the *most* likely place where they really became friends, and specifically because of the aforementioned "all about business until it's blorbo time" autistic girl energy, and it is both very cute and highly plausible to me that Soi Fon and Rukia have bonded by going "yes, this is normal" and taking turns into dumping, and being informed at because that's exactly how my friends and I play in the discord server.

This also means that Soi Fon possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Chappy by proxy and has both the time management and ways & means skills to snap up any new Chappy swag for her friend and drive both Renji and Byakuya insane by getting Rukia the thing before either even knew it existed, and effectively sniping every single birthday and holiday present for the last decade or so.

2. Cool kids table at the noble house function:

You're right that they both have NQOC status at noble house events that they are both invited to and attend out of obligation, and that's awkward, even if they both believe in nobility, and I can see them effectively meeting behind the punch bowl and sharing a look over some outrageous thing they hear Lady whatsherface say and just. Immediate kinship of the awkward kids at the birthday party. They wouldn't diss the noble class, but they absolutely would talk mad smack about nobles who are bad at being nobles.

3. Byakuya:

This is perfect and hilarious and I am giggling over whatever circumstances arise after Yoruichi leaves (or possibly even before?) That makes Soi Fon realize "wait. I'm having beef with a teenage? Specifically, this dweeb? What is WRONG with me?"

Also, consider: Byakuya transferring his one-sided rivalry with Yoruichi at least partially over to Soi Fon (the minute he finds out about Wind Goddess Shunko he's going to do something outrageous like make an audible noise of annoyance), especially if he's been silently seething over/inspired by Soi Fon's Chappy-merch acquisition skills for the last decade.

Unless I have seriously misunderstood the timelines, I think Isshin Shiba was at least a seated officer, of not actually captain of the 10th when Yoruichi left, and given how affectionate/protective/benevolently patriarchal Isshin is with Karin and Yuzu, I can't help but wonder if he wasn't the same with Soi Fon. It seems very plausible to me that Isshin, missing his sister (mother of Kaien, Kujaku and Ganju), might see Soi Fon, distraught after Yoruichi left, and take her under his wing in an older brother sort of way.

Soi Fon's home life is a mess (she's got 5 older brothers who died in service to the Shihoin Clan and her parents pushed her to devote herself to Yoruichi anyway, that household has fucking shrimp colors of mental illness), and I can see her being confused but also latching on to this new source of attention and affection, esp. when it doesn't come with weird demands.

*I think Isshin got his "greet Ichigo with a flying kick" habit from her, because I feel like that is how Soi Fon's brothers expressed affection to her in ninja, so she did it to Isshin and he thought "oh yeah, that's a normal way to behave :)"

This, naturally, manifests in the form of her occasionally appearing seemingly at random (in reality, after a whole bunch of secret machinations and drama) and bestowing a roulette wheel of major socio-politcal favors, hardcore training (read: running up and stabbing him), and very good but weirdly personal gifts, and then vanishing after failing to explain herself.

"You know captain Fon, right Rukia?" Ichigo finally asks. "What's with the (string of bizarre encounters)?"

"What?" Rukia shrugs. "She's just being friendly?"

"FRIENDLY??" Ichigo wails.

"Yeah? You're like, probably her third or fourth favorite person?"

"-I don't think I've ever had an actual conversation with her she just appears, does stuff and never answers any questions when did we become friends???"

"Oh my God Ichigo, how are you THIS clueless?"

Hey, you know who's not being a jerk though? Soi Fon! It's a remarkable development, her giving credit to others and supporting her lieutenant. So much so that Renji (again somewhat rudely...she's right there) points it out.

Rukia's reaction is kind of hilarious though. Like, we know Soi Fon has not always been nice. So has Rukia just not been paying attention? Even assuming she never ran into her as a member of the Squad 13 rank-and-file, she still had three years of being a lieutenant, where she'd presumable get the gossip on her.

Which I suppose means that Soi Fon has been personally nice enough to Rukia to make up for that. Here are my theories as to how that could have happened:

Rukia and Soi Fon get along at Shinigami Women's Association meetings. They are both all about business and getting things done, except when each has the chance to indulge in a passion for their favorite animal character. Somehow this has led to amiability rather than rivalry.

Rukia and Soi Fon get along socially at nobility functions. Rukia is a rukon orphan who was adopted into the Kuchiki household somewhat scandalously, while Soi Fon is from a servant clan to the Shihoin but has taken on some of the traditional Shihoin positions because of the youth of the current clan head. Both of them are invited to all the fancy dinners, neither of them is a hot commodity at these dinners because they have a limited capability to confer status on others. Perhaps they bonded there.

Soi Fon had an entirely-in-her-own-head rivalry with Byakuya when Yoruichi was mentoring both of them. When Yoruichi left Soul Society, Soi Fon at first took a bitter pleasure in her also leaving Byakuya behind, but as she became more and more resentful towards Yoruichi for leaving, she found herself relating more and more to Byakuya, and started requesting to work with Squad 6. Byakuya was oblivious to all of this, but was flattered by Soi Fon's seeming appreciation of his obvious talents and impressed by her competence and professionalism. He has expressed to Rukia that Captain Fon is the sort of officer the Court Guards could use more of, which Rukia recognizes is the closest her brother comes to expressing fondness for his co-workers.

He loves it honestly. He enjoys seeing you all worked up and cursing for whatever reason.

He would even rile you up on purpose just to see that side of you.

He enjoys it more if you're not even mad when you do it.

Just seeing your excited face and smiling lips uttering all sorts of heinous words. He can listen to that for days.

The first time he heard you cussing was the day you met. At first he didn't pay much attention to you even after you introduced yourself, but later on when you cursed for the first time in front of him he just couldn't take his attention off of you.

Let's just say you're the person he talks to the most and the closest one to him.

Shigaraki :

He just clicks his tongue and glares at you, silently judging.

He doesn't like it when you start cursing for the most random reasons. He simply can't understand why you do it.

Even though you try your hardest to minimize your swearing in front of him, some indecent words still slip out of your mouth here and there.

He suggested you take a moment to think about your words before uttering them, and you really tried, but even that didn't work.

After a while he noticed that you started avoiding him, and didn't understand at first until he cornered you and insisted on you to explain.

He was shocked to learn that you were afraid of continuously disappointing him with your way of speaking and decided to avoid him instead.

He felt guilty, he didn't want you of all people to tip toe around him so he asked you to be yourself and to never change again.

Present mic :

This guy just joins your cursing session. And it's embarrassing because he's too loud so there is no way you're not turning some heads.

At first you thought he was doing it because he wanted you to stop cursing: like he'd put you in an awkward situation so you would think before speaking.

And that's why you went with it and tried really hard to "meet his expectations".

But you soon realized you were wrong when he started asking about the reason for your change.

It took you a minute to realize that he actually enjoyed your little outbursts, and that he only joined in for that exact reason.

He's cute, in his own unique way, and you decided that you wanted to see that side of him even more, which is why you both let loose not caring about anything but each other.

Aizawa :

He tries his hardest to hide his smirk when you start randomly swearing, and pretends to hate it. But in reality he enjoys it more than he's willing to admit.

It's fascinating seeing you speaking those words with the most relaxed and indifferent expressions. It's like you're not even aware of what you're saying.

And it's one of the reasons why he prefers to stick to your side when you're around other people outside of your social group. He worries you might unconsciously offend someone or put yourself in trouble, so he makes sure to alert you when he feels it coming.

He would never tell you this, but he finds this little habit of yours extremely cute, and sometimes he even joins in with his own cuss words.

Bakugo :

You find his reaction to be really weird. He uses strong language himself, and on a daily basis like it's nothing, but if you happen to cuss in front of him he gets mad. He hates it when you speak that way.

So to put an end to your quarrels about the matter, you two put up a challenge:

None of you is allowed to use profanities in front of other people, and whoever loses has to grant the winner a wish of their chosing.

It was tough, tougher than you two thought it would be. And no matter how hard you tried, one of you had to lose. And it was you.

You were fuming especially when seeing him teasing you nonstop.

As for your punishment, it was the last thing you expected. He just approached you slowly and whispered mere inches from your face: " I want a kiss, that's your punishment."

Izuku :

He flinches and turns into a tomato everytime you curse. He's a shy person so hearing profanities coming out of your mouth makes him a little uncomfortable especially if you two are in public.

He knows you're not doing it on purpose, and he knows that more often than not, you end up in trouble because of it. It's just the way you are and the way you've always been.

He tries as best as he could to help you reduce your use of strong language by suggesting alternative words to say everytime you feel like cursing.

Like for instance, if you feel like saying the word "fuck" you can replace it with "flower" and so on.

It's easier said than done to be honest, but you're trying your best for him and he appreciates it more than you know.

headcanon: what happened when Kanato found out Subaru's secret relationship with their teacher (memes included)

A/N: Remember my headcanon abt Subaru falling in love with his teacher? I know it's been long buried here in Tumblr but I swear I just can't get over abt how Kanato and Subaru interacted cause there's just something funny and a bit fluffy? abt these two

So as mentioned from the said post, the bros had a hunch that Subaru was in a serious relationship (like he's really dating someone) cause he wasn't as moody as much, plus he looked like he just swallowed a happy pill.

And yes they don't hear him play the song "bEc@use 2niGht wiLL be d@ n0igHt tHaT i wiLL fa0ll 4 u" on repeat anymore words u can hear

One time, Kanato decided to go to the library (not the underground library cause that's Reiji's domain) to skip classes.

He was abt to slide the door open when he saw the calculus teacher come out, her hair disheveled while buttoning up her blouse and trying to hide the blush on her face when she saw him.

What's more, she smelled freaking bloody delicious. But there was another familiar faint scent

So Kanato entered the library to look for the source of this faint annoying scent. When he got to his usual spot, he saw Subaru, with his disheveled hair and crumpled clothes, licking the blood from his hands. caught in 4k btch

I swore Kanato's emotional stage went like this: slight shock > internal rage > complete indifference

"Subaru, that's my spot."

And holy sht, Subaru's world suddenly stopped spinning, and they were both staring at each other like this:

"What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?" Kanato asked, and Subaru was still silent.

When his younger brother wasn't responding to his question, Kanato just sighed and said, "Whatever. I'll just go find a place somewhere else."

After classes, Subaru was so frantic he's even staring at Kanato every now and then during their limo ride. Poor baby car's so paranoid he's sweating buckets at the thought of Kanato spilling the tea about his secret bcos Subaru knows Kanato will not live it down after all the triplets are notorious for teasing him to no end.

But apparently Kanato was just silent abt the whole situation. Subaru wanted to be at ease at that, but he knows he can't be too cocky abt it cause Kanato will soon reveal abt it esp when he feels like it

So Subaru waited for the right timing to talk to his "older brother"

It wasn't until he saw him lounging on the couch, munching on sweets he bought from his favorite dessert cafe when Subaru decided he should talk to him right now

But knowing Subaru, he prob struggled to tell Kanato straight abt it bcos he has to be "nice" to him or else Kanato will raise hell and his bros will come out of their rooms and ask what's happening and--in short, Subaru is in deep trouble right now. One wrong word, and the secret's in the open.

This is how the convo actually played out.

Ofc Kanato didn't need Subaru to tell him that bcos for one, he doesn't care abt it. Second, it's none of his business.

"But if you disturb my peaceful time of eating sweets or use my spot again to engage in disgusting actions with that woman, I will make sure the others will know."

Jokes on both of them bcos Subaru still disturbs him and even uses Kanato's fave library spot a couple of times.

And bcos of this, Kanato resorts to almost dropping hints of Subaru's secret out of spite and in return, Subaru will threaten to flush all his sweets down the drain

So here's how the situation went:

And in case you're wondering, the others have always known abt Subaru's relationship with the teacher. Like there was this one time when Subaru avoided getting out of his coffin and when he did, he only made their monthly dinners more awkward than it is.

Yeah, until Ayato decided to slam his utensils down and said, "Oi Subaru, stop moping around! That teacher's not the only girl in this world."

And ofc Subaru got mad at Kanato, accusing him of betrayal and such, to which the purple gremlin replied, "How dare you accuse me of such a thing?! I even had to force myself not to kill the two of you whenever you use my spot as your free love hotel, and now, this is all I get? Unforgiveable!"

It was only when Reiji explained that the teacher always reeks of his smell that they found out abt it.

So yeah, Kanato really was quiet about it...
