I have a problem. I LOVE books. Books fuel my soul, but I also have major anxiety and depression. Don't actually know if that's relevant. Anyway the issue comes from when I'm reading a book I tend to engross myself in the world and characters, which is probably the point of books, but when I'm reading something with heavy subject matter, or even if there's just one particularly heavy scene my chest gets tight. After it's over I just have to sit with it for a while. Even days later, if I just happen to think about it, my mood immediately drops. Like I'll just be going about my day, I'll think about the book, and BAM. Now I'm sad and want to cuddle back in bed. A normal person would just be like, well if books affect you that strongly then just stop reading. But I LOVE books. Do I love the way I feel while reading them? Not all the time, no. I dunno, maybe I should just stop overthinking things and enjoy books for what they are. Its just a book. A fictional story. The characters aren't real so I should stop acting like they are.
No person in their right mind should tell you to stop reading books because of the way they make you feel, so if anyone ever says that, just tell them to respectfully go fuck themselves.
The thing about books, is that despite usually offering an alternate universe (and by extension different characters and stories), we can still identify with one or more of these characters which is one of the many reasons why we react the way we do to a story, it's also why not everyone perceive it the same way, and that, in my humble opinion, is totally normal.
This actually goes beyond the receiver's POV, because if we take a movie or a show where a story is visualized, you'll notice that even the actors react the same way after spending weeks or months portraying their designated characters, because each one of them (or let's say most) would struggle to break free from the character, and you'll notice that during their public appearances or interviews, some of them would even admit to needing time in order to detach from their characters.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that the way you react to the books you read, is totally normal, because it shows that you've been engrossed in the story which is the point if you ask me, so you would of course react a certain way to a sad ending or a shocking revelation, it only means you're human, but if it gets too overwhelming, you can always take a little break to balance yourself back before resuming the read ❤️
