“It’s rather sudden, wouldn’t you say?” You asked Benjamin as he shoved a wad of shirts into one of his suitcases. Rolling your eyes, you stepped into his room, removing the shirts to fold them neatly into a pile as he started in on his pants. “Would you stop shoving everything in? You’re going to have wrinkles in everything by the time you get there.”
Benjamin rolled his eyes, setting his pants down on the bed before crossing his arms over his chest.
“You nag just like Mother used to,” he grumbled. You shot him a dirty look before dropping the shirt in your hands and moving towards the door. Benjamin let out an exasperated growl before grabbing your wrist and pulling you back. “Okay, fine. I’m sorry. Please help me pack.”
You let out a humph and a roll of your eyes as you continued to fold his clothes neatly for him.
“Now why must you go off to San Francisco so suddenly?” You prodded.
“It’ll be good for the business,” he explained. “Mr. Kerner has invited Maverick and me to join him at his firm to go over the essentials and to tour other mines so that we might see how the operations work. Maverick won’t join us until later, but I’ll go ahead to get some of the legal proceedings outs of the way.”
“You’re a lawyer,” you hummed, a frown tugging at your lips, “so why the sudden interest in investing in a gold mine?”
“It’ll be good money, Scout,” he insisted. “It’ll set my children and even yours up for life. Hell, this could be an addition to our legacy, to the life we’ve started out here.”
Financial security was tempting, especially in uncertain times, and while the ranch itself was making money, there was no promise that it would tomorrow. You supposed that it was wise to venture into other pursuits—just in case one of them ended up a failure.
“I can see by the look on your face that you don’t agree,” Benjamin hummed, pursing his lips.
“No, it’s not that,” you grumbled, shaking your head. Benjamin arched a brow in your direction in a silent question, and you let out a long sigh before continuing. “I’m concerned about the safety of this town. News of gold is going to draw in all sorts from all over, and only a fraction of them will have good intentions. Did you consider that?”
Benjamin didn’t respond right away, the thoughts racing through his head almost visible in his eyes. After a moment, he shook his head, moving across the room to gather a couple of items from his dresser.
“You worry too much.”
You scoffed. “You worry too little.”
“That’s why we’re such a great team, baby sister,” he grinned, spinning back around on his heel to face you. “Together, we worry just the right amount.”
You glared at him, though there was no real heat to it.
“Bad things are bound to happen anywhere,” he reasoned with a sigh, plopping down on the bed beside you, arms outstretched across the width of the mattress. “The country is expanding west, Scout. There were already unsavory characters here, as you very well know.”
You did know, the memory of Isaac’s cold, black eyes flashing in your mind and sending a shiver up your spine.
“That doesn’t mean we need to give others more reason to follow suit,” you muttered, picking at some non-existent lint on your skirt. Benjamin let out a long sigh before turning his head to look at you.
“You know,” he drawled thoughtfully, “you could just seduce them all like you did Seresin. I mean, it worked out pretty well last ti-”
Benjamin let out a startled squawk as you brought the pillow down on his face, his arms flailing as he scrambled to sit up as you reared your hand back to hit him again.
“I did not seduce him,” you hissed, trying desperately to hold back your laughter as Benjamin nearly collapsed onto the floor in his frenzy.
“Well, you certainly didn’t stop him,” he snickered, dodging your next blow just in time, cowering as you advanced on him. “In fact, there’s been more than one occasion where I’ve walked in on the two of you engaging in-”
The next blow had him stumbling on his feet. Your cheeks felt like they were on fire, the heat running down your neck and to your ears. Benjamin rubbed his jaw, pulling his fingers back to inspect them.
“Kissing,” he said, glancing over at you. “I was going to say kissing. Your guilty conscious gets the better of you, Scout.”
You scowled at him, raising the pillow once more, only stopping once he raised his hands in surrender.
“I yield,” he chuckled, dropping his hands as you dropped yours. “I didn’t say it was a bad thing, you know.”
“I’d rather you didn’t say anything,” you retorted, setting the pillow back in its proper place.
“I think it’s good you’ve found happiness out here,” he continued, ignoring your comment. “I’m happy that you’ve managed to find someone who makes you happy rather than someone who you think would make our father happy. Jake is a fairly decent step up from Henry Cargill.”
Your lips puckered at the name. You would have lived comfortably had you chosen to stay behind in Maryland and marry Henry as your late father would have wanted before his death, but you knew you made the right decision in choosing Jake.
Even if he still hadn’t proposed after all these months.
“I have to go run a few things to Penny,” you announced, making a beeline for the door.
“Sure you do,” Benjamin scoffed. “Give my regards to Jake, then.”
The fan in your hand did little to quell the heat of the changing seasons. It was early spring, a time where it was too hot for your winter wardrobe, but still too hot for your summer clothes. Your arm was beginning to hurt from how hard you were fanning yourself, and you closed your eyes to give them a rest from the glare of the sun overhead.
You hated the heat.
“Well, hello, gorgeous.”
You pried an eye open to see two green ones already on you. You straightened up, turning to face Jake fully as he smirked down at you.
“Jake,” you nodded, managing to keep the eager smile at bay as you batted your eyes up at him.
“You look like you’re roastin’, honey girl,” he chuckled, reaching up to tuck a stray strand of hair behind your ear. “Why’d you wear this if it’s gonna have you miserable?”
“I’ll be too cold in my summer clothes,” you explained with a sigh. Jake’s eyes twinkled as his smirk grew lascivious.
“I can think of a few ways to keep you warm,” he purred, a different heat rising to your cheeks at his words. You swatted him with your fan as you glanced around to see if anyone had heard him.
“Behave,” you warned, snapping the fan shut and tapping the end into his chest. He pouted, placing a hand to his chest in faux hurt.
“Me?” He asked, batting his lashes. “You’re accusing me of misbehaving? Well, now I’m hurt.”
“I’m sure you are,” you snorted, withdrawing your hand to continue fanning yourself. Jake watched you for a moment, drinking you in as sweat ran down the column of your throat, his eyes following it down and continuing on as he took in the rest of you. His tongue darted out to wet his lips as he shifted, and you shot him a glare.
“Stop looking at me like that,” you snapped, drawing his attention back to your face, a sheepish look gracing his features at having been caught.
“Like what?”
“You know damn good and well what you were doing,” you hissed, narrowing your eyes at him. “We’re not a married couple, and people already talk.”
“Let them,” he said, leaning forward. You pushed at his chest, a thunderous look on your face as he chuckled. “We’re practically married, anyway.”
Your temper simmered beneath your skin as you replied, “Not without a proper proposal and ceremony, we’re not.”
“All good things to those who wait, honey girl,” he smirked once more. You pursed your lips, lifting your chin as you watched the people of Maverick pass by.
“The butcher’s son asked me for my hand again yesterday morning,” you mused. “If you don’t get your act together soon, I’m going to let him start believing it’s a possibility.”
“Honey girl, you best watch it now,” Jake warned, eyes growing dark as a glint shone in his eyes.
“Or what?” You challenged, lifting your chin in defiance. Jake’s frown turned into a dangerous smirk. He squared his shoulders, taking a step closer to you before leaning down close enough for you to inhale the scent was so distinctly him. He leaned in, the heat rolling off of him and causing a flurry of butterflies in your stomach. Your hand came up to brace yourself against his arm as his other wound around your waist, squeezing slightly.
“Or,” he purred, lips brushing against the shell of your ear, “I’ll put you over my knee and leave your ass so red and raw, you’ll be shifting in that pew at church Sunday morning.”
You let out a shuddering breath, chest heaving as he pulled away, a smug smirk sat firmly on his lips as he shot you a wink.
“You look flustered, Scout,” he grinned, golden hair shining in the sunlight and creating a halo effect that had you gaping. “Looks like you might need to sit down before you faint.”
“You’re a menace,” you grumbled, shooting him a half-hearted glare. He chuckled and leaned down to peck your cheek.
“Takes one to know one,” he murmured as you swatted at him again. He dodged you, hopping back.
“Jake!”
You turned to see Bradley standing on the porch to the Hard Deck, posture nervous as he shifted on his feet and his eyes darted around. Jake sighed and let out a long sigh as he shoved his hands in his pockets. He peered over at you as the other man gestured towards the blond to come over.
“I gotta go, honey girl,” Jake said, pursing his lips as he shot Bradley a glare. “Bradshaw wants to make sure his costume is perfect for the play in a couple of days, and I somehow got roped into helping.”
“Will you be by for dinner?” You asked. “I’m making dumplings.”
Jake let out a moan as he fixed you with adoring eyes. “I swear to god, I’m going to marry you.”
“I’ll hold you to it,” you teased, a smile playing at your lips.
“Jake!”
“Jesus, Bradshaw! It’s a costume for a school play, not life and death,” Jake snapped over his shoulder. “Give me a damn minute!”
You snickered as Bradley rolled his eyes and stomped back into the saloon. Jake grinned down at you as he toyed with a strand of your hair.
“When’s Benji goin’ to be home?” He purred, eyes lidded as he looked you up and down once more.
“He won’t,” you told him, and his attention snapped up to you. “He’s going to San Francisco for business.”
“He what?” Jake asked, frowning. “He’s leaving you on your own?”
“Yes,” you replied, rolling your eyes. “It’s not the end of the world. It’s only for a few weeks, and I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself.”
“Jake.”
You looked to see Javy now standing on the porch, hands on his hips as he nodded at you.
“Come on,” he hollered across the street, peering over his shoulder for a moment to see into the saloon. “Bradley’s freaking out. You can canoodle later.”
You looked back at Jake who looked like he was going to lose his temper at any moment, bridge of his nose between his fingers.
“He’s coming!” You hollered back, a smile on your face as you rested a hand on Jake’s chest. You lowered your head to try and meet his gaze. “Canoodle?”
“I don’t know where he hears these words,” he griped, shaking his head. “You’d think the damn world was ending with how Bradley’s going on about this whole thing. It’s a play, for Christ’s sake.”
“I think it’s sweet,” you shrugged. “He and Birdie are cute together.”
Jake hummed but didn’t answer, leaning forward to press a tender kiss to your forehead before reluctantly pulling away.
“I’ll see you later tonight?” He asked, backing away slowly. You nodded barely hiding your smile behind your fan as he grinned, turning and trotting over towards the saloon. You watched silently, and with one last wave, he was inside.
You let out a sigh, wondering just when exactly you had become so lovesick as to miss him already. A tingle shot up the base of your neck, and you whipped your head towards the end of the street, the feeling of being watched suddenly prominent. You frowned as your scanned the street, shaking your head as you saw no one or nothing out of place. That was happening to you a lot recently, the feeling of being watched. You always managed to chalk it up to residual feelings from your encounter with Isaac not too long ago.
The bell to the door of the general store rang out, startling you out of your thoughts as Hondo grinned down at you.
“Well, good afternoon, Miss Scout,” he grinned, stepping back and gesturing for you to walk in. “Have you been waiting long? I didn’t think I’d take so long getting that shipment ready.”
“No,” you breathed, shaking your head and the rest of the worrying thoughts out of your head. “Not at all. Do you have anything new in today?”
It was late, and you weren’t quite sure what to do with yourself. The ranch hands had retired to their own homes only an hour before, and you had finished cleaning up from dinner not long after. Jake hadn’t shown up, and you were sure that Bradley’s panic induced state had something to do with that.
The wind had been picking up steadily over the course of the past hour, and the sound of distant thunder rolled into the confines of your home. You usually found the sound of thunder soothing, but for some reason it had you on edge tonight. The rain had started off as a few scattered sprinkles and then quickly dissolved into a downpour, the wind howling and rattling the windows. You had taken up purchase on the sofa, needlework in hand as you attempted to occupy your mind with anything other than worrying thoughts that nagged at you.
The fireplace crackled, casting a soothing heat that helped to ease your mind some, but you quickly set your needlework aside to get up and make yourself some tea.
The kitchen was dark save for the candle you had lit to allow yourself some light, the light from the flame flickering and casting ominous shadows in your usually cozy home. The panes of the window rattled as another gust of wind rammed into the house, and you tapped your finger on the countertop as you chewed on your bottom lip. A crack of lightning lit up the sky, and your heart stopped as your eyes caught the shadow of a figure by the barn. You narrowed your eyes, trying to peek through the darkness and into the shadows. Surely no one would be standing out in this weather. And looking into your house of all places? Still, a sickening feeling boiled in the pit of your stomach, and adrenaline started to course through your veins.
Another crack of lightning crashed in the night, startling you enough to jump, but one look toward the barn had you letting out a shaky breath. There was no one there this time, and you were starting to wonder if there ever was to begin with. Were you going crazy?
The creek of the floorboards behind you coupled with another peel of thunder had you whirling around, a scream caught in your throat at the sight of a shadow in the doorway.
“Scout?”
It took you a moment for your eyes to adjust, but the sight of Jake standing in front of you had a wave of relief washing over you, a tear escaping the corner of your eye unbidden.
“Honey girl,” he cooed, walking forward, his arms reaching for you, “what’s wrong? What happened?”
You shook your head, a hand over your mouth as you pushed the sob working its way up back down. Jake was soaked from head to toe, droplets dripping onto the floor as he rubbed your arms in a soothing motion.
“Talk to me,” he murmured, leaning down to try and catch your gaze. “What’s going on? What has you so worked up?”
You felt stupid. The shadow you saw must have been Jake checking on the horses. Yes, that had to have been him. You were letting your paranoia get the better of you.
“You’re dripping water all over my floors,” you whispered. Jake’s eyes widened, looking from you down to the floor before letting out a breathy chuckle.
“Sorry about that,” he muttered, “I would have been here sooner, but-”
“You’re here now,” you said, moving past him and towards the laundry you hadn’t had a chance to put away yet. “You need to change or you’ll catch a cold.”
“Scout,” he started, voice wary as he watched you scurry about. “You’re sure you’re okay?”
You stood up, a clean shirt clutched in your hands as you looked back at him. “Of course I am. Why wouldn’t I be?”
He studied you for a moment, chewing on the inside of his cheek before nodding slowly.
“Alright,” he conceded. “If you’re sure.”
“I’m positive,” you corrected. “Now go and get changed. I’ll warm up some food for you.”
Jake didn’t take long, changing and eating quickly as you took care of the odds and ends around the house. Neither of you spoke a word, but Jake’s eyes watched you as you pointedly refused to meet his gaze.
The two of you retired to the parlor, Jake reading as you started to doze. He reached for you, pulling you across the sofa and into his arms as he let out a contented sigh. You chuckled, shaking your head as you practically burrowed into his side. His fingers stroked up and down the length of your arm, adding to the calm that enveloped you even as the storm raged outside.
“You ever think about what our life together is going to be like?”
You hummed, lifting your head to peer up at him through sleepy eyes. “I do.”
“You ever think about what kind of house you’d want?” Jake continued, staring into the fireplace.
“Sometimes,” you nodded slowly. “I’d like a house big enough for our kids and grandkids to play in. Somewhere we can grow old in.”
“I’d like that too,” he murmured, hands moving down to play with your fingers absentmindedly. “I want a large house with enough land to support ourselves. Nothing like the amount of land Benji’s got himself here, but enough that we wouldn’t have to struggle.”
Silence fell between the two of you, but it wasn’t unpleasant. You soaked up the feeling of the moment, mind drifting towards sleep as Jake continued to play with your fingers.
“I’m going to build us a big, ol’ house,” he continued quietly. “I’m going to build you the kitchen of your dreams and set up your own little garden while I’m at it. You’re not going to want for anything, Scout.”
You hummed, feeling the touch of cool metal slide onto your left ring finger, a furrow in your brow as your brain tried to claw its way back to the land of the conscious.
“I can’t give you all these fancy jewels or take you to Paris and London for holidays, but I can give you my heart and my devotion. You’ll never have to question me or my loyalty to you, honey girl.”
You pried your eyes open, gasping at the diamond that now glittered on your hand. Jake brushed his lips against your temple, breathing you in as you struggled to catch up with what was happening, tears filling your eyes as a smile curled on your lips.
“Scout,” Jake started. “Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”
A/N: I missed these two so much oh my goooooooood. And how about that ending, huh?? That's crazy lol Anyway, I'm hoping to have some time to work on a few more updates for next week, but we'll see. I'll run a poll for the next update, but let me know thoughts! Both on the next update and what you thought of this chapter!

Hanging by a Moment
A/N: So @shiranuigenma encouraged me to post the 1st (rewritten twice) chapter of my IrukaxOC fanfic on here. And @pyroinquisitor and I cried about Iruka a week or so ago. :’)
The first version was originally published in 2008 on Quizilla under the username aikalovesong. Forgive me for grammatical or spelling errors.
Also on ao3 and FFN
Chapter One: The Good, The Bad and the Dirty
High School AU - Iruka Umino x OC
Warnings: None
Word Count: 2.437
Akimi took up the sixth and final seat at the outside table for lunch, quietly greeting the group. Four others - Izumo, Kurenai, Hayate, and Kotetsu - returned her greeting but the fifth was concentrating on fishing out a piece of tofu from his soup. When Akimi sat down next to him, he glanced up and dropped the piece back into the broth, splashing himself in the face.
“Ah! Akimi-chan!” Iruka sputtered, setting his bowl down and reaching for a napkin to wipe his chin. “What are you doing here? I thought you were sitting over there.” He motioned towards another table where six others were sitting - including a brunette girl whose face was turned away. The other girl turned and he saw that it wasn’t a girl - it was Genma, who had similar shoulder-length hair as Akimi. Blushing hotly he muttered, “I-I meant over there,” and pointed towards a different table. Everyone turned to look and saw that the only person sitting there was another boy.
“Jeez, Iruka, I didn’t think she looked that much like a boy,” Kotetsu said teasingly.
“Nevermind!” Iruka replied, hiding his face behind his milk carton.
“Hey guys,” came a serious voice behind them. They turned to see Anko, a rather tomboyish and brazen girl with her dark hair pulled into a wild bun. She passed by them offering a playful smirk to the boys of the table before moving on to an empty seat across the patio.
“Did you see that?” Izumo said, turning to smack Kotetsu square in the chest. “She looked at me!”
“She looked at me,” Kotetsu replied, hitting Izumo in the stomach.
“Actually,” Kurenai cut in, her voice soft but very serious, “I think she was looking at Iruka.”
“Wh-What? No she wasn’t! I mean - she may have been. But we’re in different classes - I don’t think she even knows me! Why would she —?”
Izumo and Kotetsu exchanged looks before picking up the small bowls of mixed veggies and dumping it onto their rice.
“I’m only teasing, Iruka,” Kurenai said, throwing a glance at the boy beside her. “We all know what class she’s in. I’m sure she’s just trying to get a rise out of one of you, catch you off guard. You shouldn’t fall for it. Also, Iruka, did you have notes on today’s lesson?”
“Oh, yes!” the boy replied, grateful for the shift in conversation. “I have them in my bag. I can give them to you after school.”
“That would be wonderful, thank you.”
“Do you think I could borrow them too?” Hayate asked, raising his hand to his mouth and coughing violently.
“Of course! I can copy them for you if you want.”
“Hey - what’s this talk about copying? You guys aren’t cheating are you?”
The six of them turned to see the fourth year’s teacher, Jiraiya, standing over them. His mouth was pointed in a frown but they could tell he was joking. He eyed them suspiciously and pointed a finger at Iruka who shrunk back, his milk carton still in his hands.
“You’re the last person I would expect to be cheating! But I guess every student has their weakness. I’m surprised it’s you two that are the ones taking his notes too,” Jiraiya continued, looking at Hayate and Kurenai in turn. “I thought for sure you two would be the ones to understand my teaching! I mean, there are a few other kids in this class I could understand cheating …” He glanced around the outdoor seating and frowned genuinely this time. “There are so many … Oh! I’m sorry.” Jiraiya crossed his arms and looked at Akimi who was hidden behind Iruka, unsure of what was happening. “I didn’t meant to be rude. You’re not in my class. How do you know my lovely students?”
Before she could even open her mouth to answer, he made a face and said, “Wait, are you Iruka’s younger sister?”
Iruka whipped around, wide-eyed and sputtered, “N-No! She’s not my sister! Why would you think that!”
“Jeez, kid, lighten up - you look like you could related. Cousins? Distantly? You’ve both got pretty dark hair and you’re both pretty tan.”
“She’s kind of lighter than I am - a-and we don’t look that similar! We’re not related. You shouldn’t say stuff like that, you could start a rumor!”
“What? A rumor that you’re related?” Jiraiya deadpanned and the corner of his lip twitched, “Is that such a bad thing? It’s pretty harmless. I mean, there are plenty of worse things you could be upset about. Besides, she looks like a nice kid. You should take it as a compliment.”
Blushing slightly, Akimi sat up and gave an awkward smile to the teacher. “No, I’m not related - er, I don’t have any siblings or cousins, really. At least not here. I walk home the same way as all of them, so I’ve run into them a few times. Plus Hayate and I live really close to each other! We grew up in the same neighborhood.”
“Really? That’s nice.” Jiraiya paused, surveyed the group, and then raised a hand to his mouth to mimic whispering. “Tell me, whose your favorite? You have to have a favorite, right? I won’t tell them. Personally, I think Izumo and Kotetsu are really annoying —”
“We know you do,” Kotetsu interrupted.
“We think you’re annoying too,” Izumo added.
“— but they don’t know that. You don’t have to choose a favorite from this group. Do you know any of my other students?”
Akimi looked around the open area and spotted a few other kids she knew who were the same age as her friends - Anko, Genma, and Raidou were a few of them. She had seen them on her walks home from school as well, but she hadn’t talked to any of them much other than the one time during her first year at Konoha High School when she’d faceplanted on the front steps and accidentally vaulted her bookbag over the side railing, down into the grass. Genma had been walking behind her, talking with his friend Raidou, and they both tripped over her and fell over. Raidou ended up rolling down the steps and Genma was halfway between amused and annoyed at the whole situation, but he helped Akimi stand up and told her, “It’s okay, we all trip over ourselves sometimes. Just don’t do it again.” Anko was passing by when she saw the whole thing and helped pick up Akimi’s scattered papers and returned the bookbag to her. The first-year was so flustered and horrified that she decided she could never speak to those three ever again, even if they had been kind to her. But she had the feeling that every time they saw her, they only imagined a huge neon sign pointing down at her saying KLUTZ!
There was one other she knew shared the same grade as the others, but she didn’t know if Jiraiya was his teacher or not. Her cheeks turned a rosy shade of pink at the thought of him and she shook her head.
“J-Just a few!” she replied, realizing she looked quite silly saying nothing. “I couldn’t choose favorites … That’s not very nice!”
“So what? I have a favorite,” Jiraiya responded evenly, looking a bit proud of himself.
“What? Who?” Kotetsu asked, puzzled. “Should you even be telling us this?”
“You’re right - I shouldn’t. But I’ll give you a hint - it’s none of you!” He laughed and turned to leave before wheeling around again, startling the group. “Wait - I never got your name! What is it?”
“Huh? Oh! It’s Akimi - Kono Akimi.”
“Akimi, huh? What grade are you in, Akimi?”
“I’m a 2nd year student.”
“Just a 2nd year? I know a few of the 2nd years around here. Do you know that one kid - what’s his name? The kinda weird one with the eyes.”
“Uh - Gaara?”
“Yeah! Him! What do you think about him?”
“He’s …” She paused to look at the expressions of everyone around her. She gave a quick, breathy laugh and said, “He’s nice enough to me. Why do you ask?”
“With my luck, I’ll have his siblings next year, and him the year after that. I’m just wondering what I can expect from him. He’s very quiet.”
“Y-Yes, he is. But I don’t think it’s because - er, well, I suppose everyone has a reason for being the way they are. Some people are quiet. Uhm … but he’s a good student.”
“Huh … Did Hiruzen tell you that? I mean, the whole thing about everyone has a reason for being the way they are. Did you learn that from him?”
“Ah, yes! How did you know?”
Jiraiya smiled knowingly and shrugged. “I’ve been a teacher here for a while now. I know just about every teaching method there is - and I was once a student, too. I won’t admit how long ago because that’ll give away my age - and if I give away my age, I give away Lady Tsunade’s age too and she’d kill me! But let’s just say once upon a time, I was given the exact same speech by Hiruzen-sensei. I think we all were … Anyway, I’ve got to get back to the class before lunch is over. I’ll see you around!” He strutted off, his white hair swaying carelessly behind him.
There was a silence at the table as everyone poked at their food. Akimi pushed a piece of chicken into her bowl of rice with her chopsticks. “He seemed nice,” she said, not quite sure if it was the right thing to say.
“Yeah, nice enough,” Izumo retorted. He jabbed a finger towards the table across the patio and said, “You see those kids over there? Anko, Asuma, Genma and Raidou? They’re part of Lady Tsunade’s class.”
“Uhm … okay. Is that bad?” Akimi asked, looking over towards the table.
“Well, you see …” Kotetsu said slowly, “Lady Tsunade and Jiraiya-sensei have a kind of long-standing rivalry. They each try to get their students to have the best grades on tests, best performances in sports, best looking too … They don’t want us really talking to kids from each other’s class, so that’s why we’re all sitting at different tables. That’s why it was kind of weird that Anko said ‘hi’ to us. I mean, not that I minded -”
“As if she’d go for someone like you,” Izumo huffed.
“Also,” Kotetsu ignored his friend and motioned towards the student with a silky bowl cut and thick eyebrows, “that’s Gai. He’s in our class - that’s why he’s not sitting with the others.”
“He looks so alone!” Akimi cried, seeing that Gai was sitting by himself. “Did I take his seat? I didn’t mean to!”
“Oh, don’t worry about him,” Kurenai cut in. “He likes to sit alone to study and, well, I guess to try to be the best. But he’ll join us sometime later.”
“That’s not the thing, though,” Kotetsu said. “Gai is in our class, but Lady Tsunade has a kid in her class and he and Gai have it out for each other!”
“Gai calls him his ‘eternal rival’,” Izumo said, rolling his eyes. “They’re always doing dumb competitions, seeing who is better. This means that our classes are even more competitive than usual. Not only are Lady Tsunade and Jiraiya-sensei at each other’s throats, but so are some of their students! It can get pretty ugly.”
“Since you’ve already befriended us,” Hayate said through coughs, “and you’ve met with Jiraiya-sensei, it’d be best to stay away from Lady Tsunade and her class.”
“Unless you want to unleash the true fury of Lady Tsunade,” Kotetsu said. “Or of Jiraiya-sensei. Someone or another will probably accuse you of being a ‘spy’ if you befriend both classes.”
“What?” the girl exclaimed, looking bewilderedly at each student in turn. “So I can’t talk to anyone from Lady Tsunade’s class? How - How do I even know who all of them are? I’ve already met a few of them! I met them before I met you guys! I mean, not that I talk to them, but …”
“Just to be on the safe side, maybe you should only talk to us,” Izumo said, though his voice was teasing. “Tell you what - there is one person you personally should stay away from, and they also happen to be in Lady Tsunade’s class.”
“Huh? Who?”
Izumo glanced over towards Gai’s table. Everyone’s gaze shifted too and they saw Gai leap to his feet and point rigidly at the boy passing by his table, a stone-faced, silver-haired student who looked absolutely bored.
“Hatake Kakashi.”
Akimi’s face flushed red and she looked down at her milk - so he was part of Tsunade’s class. That meant she couldn’t talk to him? “K-Kakashi-san? But I sometimes see him too when I walk home! Am I supposed to ignore him? What’s so bad about him?”
Iruka huffed and set his chopsticks down on his tray. “I think I’m going to head back into the classroom. Kurenai, Hayate, you needed my notes right? I can start copying them and give them to you after school.” He stood, taking his tray with him. “I’ll see you around, Akimi.”
“Ah! Goodbye, Iruka —!”
The brown-haired boy scurried off, his eyes down and his shoulders slumped.
“We should probably head inside too,” Kurenai said, glancing towards the one-sided argument that had broken out between an exuberant Gai and a rather unfazed Kakashi. “Izumo, Kotetsu, you go get Gai and I’ll take your trays. Akimi, Hayate and I may be a little late if we’re getting notes from Iruka but you’re more than welcome to wait for us so we can walk home together.”
“I will,” Akimi beamed as the others stood from the table. “I’ll see you after school!”
Izumo and Kotetsu hurried to pry Gai away from an inexpressive Kakashi and back towards the classroom. As they passed, Gai shot Akimi a grin and a thumbs up.
“You’ve chosen the right people to befriend, young lady!” he bellowed, his teeth unnaturally bright and white, glistening in the afternoon sun. “A friend of Gai is a friend who doesn’t have to worry about anything! You just let me know if Kakashi - or anyone else from Lady Tsunade’s class - is bothering you and I’ll take care of it!”
“Uh - thank you?”
Izumo pushed Gai towards the school and Kotetsu followed close behind. Akimi looked over and blushed hotly when she saw that the kids from Tsunade’s class were staring at her. She hurriedly finished her own meal and rushed inside the school building, trying to pretend she wasn’t being studied by at least five pairs of eyes.

It was the rooster crowing that awoke you, or perhaps it was the tendrils of sunlight that crept through the curtains to caress your cheeks. Either way, consciousness had now made its presence known and once you were up, you were up. With a groan, you stretched your legs out, relishing in the tender feeling of the muscles in your lower back ridding themselves of their stiffness and aches.
You let your eyes stay closed, the soft lowing of the cattle out in pasture alerting you to the fact that you would have to get up sooner than you would like as the rest of the world stirred around you. You heard the telltale sound of your brother, Benjamin, moving around in his room, and with a heavy sigh, you finally pried your eyes open, taking in the blue rays of the morning sun as they slowly changed to gold. Flipping the blanket down, you let out a small shudder as the cool air caressed your skin, the last remnants of winter still clinging to the world as spring wormed its way in.
Dressing quickly, you made your way downstairs, starting the stove and preparing breakfast for the ranch hands that would walk through the door at any moment. Things had settled nicely since the incident a month prior with Isaac Cassidy, the looming sense of dread that had often filled you giving way to a tender calm ever since the man had hanged at the gallows in place of Jake. Your heart clenched at the memory that you almost hadn’t made it in time to save him.
The front door opened, the sound of heavy footsteps echoing throughout the house, a small smile playing at your lips at the familiar sound. The sound of humming accompanied the footsteps as they grew louder, and you turned from the pot in front of you just as Jake Seresin, former outlaw turned honest man, rounded the corner. He held a small bouquet of golden flowers, marigolds, in one of his hands, his hat clutched in the other. His green eyes lit up as they landed on you, lips splitting into a giant grin. Tossing his hat onto the table, he crossed the room quickly to wrap you up in his arms, careful not to crush the flowers in his hand as he did so. He gazed down at you, cupping your jaw with his free hand and running his thumb along your bottom lip. Leaning down, he captured your mouth with his in a kiss which you gladly returned. His lips were surprisingly soft against yours, and all too soon he pulled away, placing a kiss to the tip of your nose.
“Good morning, honey girl,” he murmured, offering you the marigolds. “Did you sleep well?”
You hummed, a dazed look on your face as you smiled softly up at him.
“Jake,” you sighed, eyes darting down to the flowers he was holding up for you. Your happy expression morphed quickly into one of suspicion as you glanced from the flowers to him. “Are those my marigolds that I’ve been waiting all week to bloom?”
He let out a loud scoff, but the smile was still in his eyes as he turned the scoff back down to you.
“Are you accusing me of stealing?” he teased, leaning in so that your noses were practically touching. You arched an eyebrow at him with an unimpressed frown.
“Answer the question.”
“No, Scout,” he replied, feigning hurt. You waited for him to provide an explanation, scowling when he pulled away to grab a vase from the china hutch by the back door. You watched as he plucked one of the vases from the top shelf, walking over to water bucket to fill it. With a sigh, you leaned against the counter, crossing your arms as you waited for him to give you an answer.
“Jake,” you grumbled, a hint of warning in your tone. The blond hummed, raising his brow at you innocently as he placed the vase of flowers in the center of the table.
“Jake.”
“What’s that, sweet girl?”
“Where did you get the flowers from?” You asked him again, watching as he mirrored your stance against the table. You could see him trying to fight off the smile that threatened to overtake him as he shifted his gaze down to the floor.
“I grabbed’em from Mrs. Wymer’s garden,” he admitted, a blush blooming on his cheeks as he snuck a glance back up at you.
“Jake!” You cried out, eyes growing wide as you gaped at him in disbelief. “You stole that old woman’s flowers right from out of her garden?”
“No!” He exclaimed, pausing as if thinking over his next words. He grimaced and your shoulders slumped as you could already feel the annoyance pass over you. He gave you a sheepish smile. “Well, yes. But it’s not what you think!”
“Oh,” you scowled, rolling your eyes, “please do tell me how it’s not what I think.”
“Well, you see,” he began, his sheepish smile turning devious. He pushed off from the table, sauntering slowly over to where you stood, still scowling at him. “It just so happens that Mrs. Wymer insisted that I take the flowers. Said that she thought I could put them to good use, and so I did just that.”
He stopped back in front of you, a smirk plain as day on his face. You raised an eyebrow at him, the two of you standing in silence as he waited for you to respond.
“You’re a loon,” you mumbled, feeling heat rise to your cheeks as he gazed down at you, those green eyes holding so much adoration as they beheld you.
“Only for you,” he murmured, leaning forward to kiss you once again. You leaned into him, wrapping an arm around his neck as he pulled you closer by the waist, deepening the kiss as his other hand stroked your side.
“Scout have you seen me-”
The two of you sprang apart as Benjamin sauntered into the room. He stopped short as he looked up from buttoning his suit jacket, seeing the position you two were in. He let out a long sigh as he dropped his hands to his sides, giving the both of you a once over and a look of chagrin.
“Must you?” He asked to neither of you in particular.
“Apologies, Benjamin,” Jake snickered, leaning against the counter as you turned your attention back to the pot on the stove. You heard Benjamin scoff as he walked over towards the table, plopping down into one of the many seats surrounding it.
“What was it you were saying, Benji?” You asked him, chancing a glance back at him. He was still scowling, eyes darting between you and the blond at your side. His gaze fixed back on you as he sat up straighter.
“I was asking if you had seen my briefcase,” he said slowly, watching as you scooped a ladle full of oatmeal into a bowl for him. You walked over, placing it gently in front of him as he continued to eye you up and down with an indiscernible expression.
“I’m sure it’s in your study where you left it last night,” you told him, giving him a scowl of your own. “Now stop staring at me. It’s rude.”
He grumbled something under his breath, but turned his attention to his food just as the other ranch hands started filing through the door.
“You better go grab a seat,” you told Jake, grabbing four more bowls from the cupboard. He brushed his hand against yours as he pushed off from the counter to join the others.
You joined them at the table once everyone was served, taking your seat in between Benjamin and Jake, both of whom were nearly finished. Benjamin shoveled the last little bit of his food into his mouth, scrambling to his feet as he glanced up at the clock on the mantle.
“Blast it, the time,” he mumbled, rushing towards the front door. He stopped as he crossed the threshold from the kitchen into the hallway, catching your eye as he did so.
“Scout,” he said, pointing a finger at you, “I’ll see you tonight at the town hall meeting, right? It’s important that you come, and be there by seven.”
“Where’s my invite, Benji?” Jake asked, raising an eyebrow at him. Benjamin spared him a look, jaw twitching at the mischievous expression on the blond’s face.
“Quite frankly, Mr. Seresin,” your brother said evenly, “I don’t give a damn what you do or say until there’s a ring on my sister’s finger.”
Before Jake could respond, Benjamin turned on his heal and walked out. Seconds later, you all heard the sound of the front door opening and then slamming shut, and you let out a sigh. A moment of awkward silence swallowed the room before the other ranch hands thanked you for the meal and made themselves scarce. Jake glanced at you from the corner of his eye as he finished his food.
“He does know we’re practically engaged already, right?” He asked you, shifting slightly in his seat. You snickered, grabbing your bowl and his as you headed towards the sink. Jake’s mischievous look was long gone as he rose to his feet, walking after you. “Scout?”
“Mr. Seresin,” you began, clasping your hands in front of you as you turned to look at him, “unfortunately for you, my brother raises an important matter. Until I receive a proper proposal, I’m afraid your word doesn’t carry very much weight in this house.”
Jake gaped at you, green eyes wide as they took you in.
“Scout-”
You held up your hand to stop him, nearly laughing at the state of him as he stood there in the middle of your kitchen, eyes wide and mouth ajar as he scrambled for something to say. Fighting back a smile, you walked over so that you were standing right in front of him, placing your hands on his chest and gently brushed out the wrinkles in his shirt, peering up at him through your lashes.
“You better get going,” you told him, leaning up to peck him on the cheek. “You have work to do.”
The town hall was filled with the deafening roar of the townsfolk gathered in the assembly hall. It was so crowded, in fact, that you felt immense gratitude towards your past self for thinking to pack your fan in your clutch. You fanned yourself lightly, watching the older women of the community congregate together to discuss town gossip in hushed whispers while their husbands gathered on the opposite side of the room to discuss business. The women your age were gathered in the seats to your left, and you wondered how they kept themselves busy considering that every time you saw them they were gracing the modiste with their presence.
“I heard she stabbed him.”
That caught your attention, and you shifted in your seat subtly to better hear the conversation to your left.
“I heard she lured him into the bedroom and then seduced him before handing him over to the marshal.”
That made you frown. Your actions regarding Isaac Cassidy’s arrest and then subsequent execution had been the talk of the town for a couple of weeks now, and it appeared the rumor mill had run wild. You supposed you would have to do something about that.
“Look at her,” one of the older girls said, and you felt four pairs of eyes land on your profile. You remained stoic, not showing them that you could hear every single word of what they were saying. “She’s a proper lady, you know. From out back east. I doubt she’d be capable of much else other than simple household chores.”
That made you snicker. You attempted to cover it up with a cough, but you were unable to see if your efforts worked because Birdie and Bunny came walking down the aisle towards you.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen everyone gathered in one place before,” Birdie said excitedly, taking the seat next to yours on your left. Bunny smiled softly in your direction before sitting on the opposite side of the young schoolteacher, leaning forward so that she could still hear the two of you over the still growing crowd.
“It is a bit exciting, I suppose,” you smiled. You hadn’t been sure about holding the town hall meeting in the actual town hall versus the church. You had raised the concern to your brother early on that the town hall might be too large a space for the people who regularly showed their faces in town.
“Don’t you worry a thing, Scout,” he had grinned, excitement evident on his face. “People are going to come from all over to hear what we have to say. The farmers and ranchers who almost never make it into town are even coming! I’m worried we might not even have enough space for all of them.”
Glancing around, you were beginning to think his worries might be justified. The room was growing more and more crowded as the minutes stretched on.
“You’re coming to the play next week, right?” Birdie asked you. You turned your attention back to her, giving her a nod as you smiled.
“Yes, of course!” You told her. “I wouldn’t miss it!”
“Who could turn down the opportunity to see Bradley up on that stage acting all heroic?” Bunny teased, nudging Birdie good-naturedly. You saw a tinge of pink creep onto her face as you and Bunny giggled. It was no secret that Birdie and the outlaw had feelings for one another, but getting the schoolteacher to admit that was a feat in and of itself.
“A prince and his princess,” you added, earning a rare scowl from the girl beside you.
“I told you already,” she grumbled, “I want to establish myself as an individual first. I have a career to think about.”
“Yes, of course,” you nodded. “I think it’s very noble of you to do so, actually. But that doesn’t mean you can’t play the field while you’re establishing your career.”
Bunny nodded in agreement, and Birdie turned back to you.
“And what of you and Jake Seresin?” She asked, eyes flaring in intrigue. “Any word of an official proposal yet?”
Before you could answer, the group of girls to your left burst into a fit of giggles, grabbing your attention. Their eyes darted to the back of the room, and your gaze followed, instantly connecting with a pair of green eyes that were already on you.
Jake was leaning against the back wall next to the rest of the Daggers, Bradley standing directly to his left as the brunette laughed at something Reuben had said. Jake shot you a wink, and you felt your cheeks instantly warm. Biting back a smile, you turned your attention back ahead of you, fanning yourself a bit faster.
“The boys are here,” you told Bunny and Birdie as nonchalantly as possible. Both of them turned their attention to the back of the room, instantly turning back around to mirror you as you sat with your back straight and staring pointedly ahead at the stage.
“Damn them,” Birdie murmured, her cheeks as red as rubies now. You let out a chuckle, nodding in agreement.
Just then, Maverick, Benjamin, and a third man you had seen in passing at the law firm stepped onto the stage, and the conversations around the room died down as attention turned to the three men standing in front of everyone. Maverick cleared his throat as the last of the chatter stopped, stepping forward to address all who had gathered. He smiled warmly, gaze traveling across the room as he clapped his hands together.
“Let’s get started, shall we?”

Hmm yes hello. Can we get an insight from Jake’s POV for when he first met Scout?
Cannot BELIEVE this is the first time this has been requested....
Anyway, this was a little longer than I thought it'd be lol One use of "y/n," but y'all already know it's Scout.
Sweat dripped from Jake's brow despite the coolness offered by the shade of the Hard Deck. He leaned back in his chair, feet propped up on the table as he let his head drop back against his shoulders with a tired sigh. Bradley had been a menace the last couple of weeks, something typical for him this time of year. The gang had hardly had a moment's rest between the different robberies they'd committed, and now they had Isaac and his gang after them.
How was Jake supposed to know that girl had been Isaac's? She seemed receptive enough, especially when her hand slid down to his-
Jake jerked, catching himself just in time as his chair nearly fell out from under him. He glanced around, eyes landing on Penny as she glared down at him.
"Keep your feet off my tables, Jacob," she hissed. Jake shot her a scowl, but acquiesced, planting his feet on the hardwood and sucking on his teeth in thought.
"What's got you lookin' so sour?" She asked, wiping down the table where his feet just sat. "You're lookin' so dark, the chickens have come home to roost."
Jake let out a snort, rolling his eyes as he grimaced.
"Bradley's got us in in a mess again," he muttered. Penny hummed, raising an eyebrow.
"From what I've heard, you've got just as much to do with the bind you're in now as he does."
"Wouldn't be in this mess if he'd give it a rest once in a while," he countered.
"Wouldn't be in this mess if you'd keep it in your pants for a change," she fired back. "When are the lot of you going to find some nice girls and settle down, hm? You're not getting any younger."
Jake clicked his tongue, but didn't respond. Instead, he pushed away from the table, dropping a few bills in his place.
"I'll see you later, Penny," he waved, not looking back as he walzed out of the saloon. He let out a huff as the sun beat down, pondering his options on what to do for the rest of the day. He supposed he could go and bother Maverick, but the old man seemed busier than usual these days. He could always go to the brothel, the girls love him there. Of course, he could always go and find Javy and the others.
He turned towards the post where he had secured Whiskey, stopping at the sight before him.
Whiskey was a grumpy, old horse. Really, the only people he ever let near him were Tom, Maverick, and himself, usually offering a nip or a stomp at anyone who ventured too close for the horse's liking. But there you stood, practically cradling Whiskey's large head in your arms as you stroked a hand up the length of his face, murmuring softly to him with a gentle smile.
Jake's heart lurched in his chest, heat gathering at his cheeks as he blinked at the sight of you. He swore he had never seen anything more beautiful in his life.
Whiskey nudged his nose at you, drawing out a sweet sounding giggle from your lips, and butterflies swooped in Jake's stomach at the sound. He couldn't think of any time where he'd felt like this towards someone, and he was finding that he wasn't opposed to it. Quite the opposite actually.
He studied you for a moment. You were dressed nicely, perhaps a little too many layers for the current heat, but not a hair was out of place on your head as you continued your one sided conversation.
Must be a new girl they took on over at the brothel, he thought to himself. The madame there, Greta, only dressed her girls up that fine when they were making their debut, and none of the other ladies would dress that fine in this heat. Yes, you must be out here advertising.
Jake knew he had to have you. He'd pay for every night that he could, just so long as no one else would have you.
Before he could stop himself, his feet began moving on their own and next thing he knew, he had come up to stand right behind you.
"Well, darlin’. There must be something special about you, huh?" He grinned. You jumped at the sound of his voice, eyes wide in surprise as you realized that you had an audience. You didn't answer right away, taking a moment to study him, and Jake discovered that he quite liked the way your gaze felt on him.
“I’m sorry?” you questioned.
“Whiskey here doesn’t warm up to just anyone,” he grinned, resting a hand next to yours. “In fact, he doesn’t like much of anyone accept me.”
You averted your gaze shyly, letting out another giggle as Whiskey nibbled on the strands of your hair. Jake's heart swelled in his chest, and he leaned closer towards you, taking in the scent of your lavender perfume.
"I haven’t seen you ‘round these parts before," he said. "You new in town?”
“Yes,” you answered politely, lashes batting against your cheek. “I just arrived here.”
“Figured,” he chuckled. “I would have remembered seeing someone as pretty as you walkin’ around.”
A hint of a smile tugged on your lips, and Jake wasn't even sure you realized it as you averted your gaze once more. He took that moment to put his bid in.
“So, sugar,” he started, “how much for your debut?”
The smile dropped from your lips as you looked at him with eyebrows furrowed. “What?”
Jake already missed the shy smile you gave him, but he continued on with a chuckle.
“How much is it going to cost me to have you in my bed for the hour?”
Your brow furrowed even more as you cocked your head to one side. "I beg your pardon?"
“C’mon, honey. It’ll be worth your while,” he smirked, running his eyes up and down your form. God, he couldn't wait to hear the noises you'd make for him, the shy sighs and quiet moans as he took you apart piece by piece. “Promise it’ll be good for you too. Hell, I’ll even pay for the night.”
All trace of shyness and mirth had disappeared from your face as you looked at him with a stony expression, rage flickering behind your pretty eyes.
“How dare you!”
Jake felt uncertainty creep up his spine as his smirk faltered. This was certainly new.
“What’s the matter, darlin’?” He asked.
“The matter,” you seethed, “is that you have just assumed that I am some woman of ill repute, sir.”
He paused, studying you. God, you looked cute like this. “Well, I just figured since you were dressed up so pretty, it must have been to draw in customers.”
That was apparently the wrong thing to say.
“I’m not a whore!” you shouted, drawing looks from passersby. Jake held his hands up in a placating manner, a mixture of fear and arousal coursing through him. Oh, he was certainly going to have fun with you, and there was no way he'd be able to stay away. He was certain of it.
“My sincerest apologies, miss,” he offered, trying to hold back a grin. Usually the girls in town fawned all over him, and while it was convenient, it certainly got old after a while. But you? He liked that fire in you, and he wanted to see what else lay beneath that pretty exterior of yours.
You turned to walk away, huffing out a snort as you stopped after a few feet, looking over your shoulder to fix him with an icy look.
“I would advise you, Mr…?”
"Seresin," he grinned. "Jake Seresin."
“Mr. Seresin,” you breathed, pursing your lips. “I would advise you to not make such horrible assumptions next time you come across a woman you don’t know.”
You didn’t wait for his response as you continued walking. Jake's grin grew wider as he trotted after you, falling into step beside you as you continued on down the street. He could feel the irritation rolling off of you in waves.
"What are you doing, Mr. Seresin?" You asked, not even trying to contain your annoyance.
"Call me Jake."
You stopped in your tracks, scowling up at him.
“I most certainly will not,” you huffed. “Now answer my question.”
Jake stared at you. What was he doing? What was he doing? He'd never chased after a girl like this, certainly not one who yelled at him the way you had. No, he much prefered the convenience that came with girls chomping at the bit for his attention. Right?
So why did he want your attention so badly? There were girls who'd line up for even a moment to simply chat with him, and yet here he was chasing after a girl who clearly wanted nothing to do with him. Still, he thought back to the way you had cooed at Whiskey, the gentle smile on your face as you whispered to the beast.
He never thought he'd be jealous of a horse.
Jake's mind was drawn back as you started to squirm under his gaze, and he realized how long the two of you had been standing there in silence, your glare growing more prominant the more uncomfortable you became.
“Well, since I accidentally insulted you,” he cocked his head at your glare, “I figured the least I could do is walk you to wherever it is you’re going.”
“While I appreciate the gesture,” you said with gritted teeth a polite smile, “but that is entirely unnecessary.”
“Nonsense,” Jake chirped, “what kind of gentleman would I be if I allowed a beautiful young lady to walk around unescorted through town?”
The look you gave him had the grin on his face expanding as you huffed once again, continuing on the path down the street. Jake caught up to you once again, offering you his arm and arching a brow at the scoff you threw his way. You scowled, but took his arm, pointedly facing foward as a triumphant smirk made its way onto Jake's face. The two of you walked in silence only a few moments more until you stopped just in front of the newest building in the town of Maverick.
Jake looked up at the fancy looking building, fighting back the irritation that suddenly coursed through him.
"The lawyer?" He asked, trying to maintain his best poker face.
"Yes," you answered simply, letting go of his arm to put some distance between the two of you. Jake folded his arms across his chest and did his best to look like he wasn't glaring up at the offending structure.
“You come here to join your fiance?” he asked, tone even and face still unreadable.
“Are you jealous, Mr. Seresin?”
Jake looked at you then, jaw set and green eyes ablaze. Your face was filled with amusement as you looked at him.
“Answer the question, darlin’.”
You shook your head, closing your eyes for a brief moment. “No. I’m not even engaged. Benjamin is my brother.”
Relief washed through him, and were he a more introspective person, he'd analyze why he felt that way. But, Jake could only be thankful that he didn't appear to have any immediate competition for your affection and attention, already plotting how to run into you again as a smirk crept onto his face.
"I don’t think I got the pleasure of your name, sugar.”
“I highly doubt you’ll need it,” you stated simply. He arched an eyebrow at you.
“And why is that?”
“Because I don’t believe our paths will cross again, Jake,” you said, lips curling in a small, victorious smile.
“Ah, that’s no fair, darlin’. All I want to know is your name,” he grinned, leaning in closer, once again catching a whiff of your lavender perfume. He could hear the way your breath caught in your throat, feeling at least a little satisfied that he seemed to have a similar effect on you that you did for him.
“Just my name?” you whispered.
“Just your name," he assured you with a nod.
The door to the building opened and your attention was drawn to the two figures who appeared.
"Scout?" The lawyer called to you at the same time Natasha spoke, and Jake smirked in triumph at the revelation of your name.
"Y/n, huh?" He chuckled, pulling back. The tension in your shoulders eased as he did. "Or is it Scout?"
"It's neither to you," you scowled, and a laugh ripped through Jake before he could stop it.
Benjamin walked quickly down the steps and down to your side where he leveled Jake with a stare. Jake was aware that he had a reputation, and he was sure the lawyer wasn't too keen on his baby sister being anywhere near the likes of someone like him.
“How can we be of service, Hangman?” Benjamin asked tensely, and Jake felt a brief tinge of irritation at the use of that damned nickname. Your head whipped around to look at him, shock and worry coloring your features as you, Jake assumed, put the puzzle pieces together. Jake let an easy, mocking grin take over his face as he looked at Benjamin before shooting a wink in your direction.
“Just escorting your sister back to your door, Benjamin. Wouldn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea, would we?” He grins, not taking his eyes off of you. Benjamin stiffened beside you, shooting him a warning look. Jake had to admit, the man had some balls looking at him like that. Not many men would dare to.
“Yes, well,” Benjamin began, “thank you, Hangman. It’s greatly appreciated.”
“Anytime,” replied Jake, already turning to walk back. He gave you another wink, smirking at the way you gaped at him. “I’ll be seeing you around then, Scout.”
The dirt crunched beneath his boot as he set off back down the road. If he had anything to say about it, this most certainly wouldn't be the last time you saw him around.

The kids trying to take care of daddy when he's sick <- please, please, please, i'm begging you - this with dhtn!jake!!!
Alright, let's goooooooooo
Jake was dying, he was sure of it. He couldn't breath and his skin felt both hot and cold at the same time. His head was pounding and every muscle in his body ached.
Yeah, he was dying.
At least he would die the happiest man alive.
You had woken up that morning to the sound of you husband coughing, his body jerking the bed.
"Jakey?" You had grumbled groggily, rolling over to look at him. He had given you an apologetic smile that looked more like a grimace as he plopped his head back against the pillow.
"I'm sorry, sweet girl," he rasped. "Did I wake you?"
You ignored his question, sitting up to get a proper look at him. A light sheen of sweat covered his skin, and when you rested your hand on his forehead, you hummed in concern.
"Sweetheart, you're burning up," you cooed, running your hands through his hair. He hummed at the pleasant feel, his eyes closing as he relaxed into your touch.
"Gotta get up and get started on the chores," he mumbled, moving to stand. You pushed him back down, eyeing him sternly.
"You'll do no such thing," you chided. "You're to stay in bed for the rest of the day, do you understand?"
"Mmm," he smirked, "I like it when you get bossy."
"I mean it, Jake."
"I hear you, darlin'," he sighed, already falling back asleep. "Won' be movin' a muscle."
He wasn't sure how long he slept, but you were no where to be seen in the large room. He wasn't even sure what had roused him from his slumber until he felt a tickle by his nose. He pried his eyes open to see a pair of identical green ones gazing back at him. He jerked slightly in surprise before relaxing back with a small smile.
"Ellie," he hummed, looking at the little girl. "Does your mama know you're in here?"
She gave him a mischievous smile, shaking her head slightly to indicate that, no. You did not know your two year old was in the room waking up her daddy.
Eleanor was the only daughter out of all of your children, and she was your carbon copy save for the green eyes that Jake had passed along to all of your children. Jake still laments that none of them inherited yours.
"What are you doin' in here, sweetheart?" he croaked at her, wincing at the spike of pain in his throat. Ellie looked up at him sweetly, pulling a tiny, blue forget-me-not out from around her back. Jake's heart melted at the sight.
"Is that for me, baby girl?" He asked her, and she nodded, arm outstretched for him to grab it. He did so gently, giving her a wide smile.
"Flowers make me feel better," she said with her little lisp. "I wan' daddy to feel better too."
"I don't want you to get sick though, sweet pea," he cooed at her just as a set of footsteps came racing down the hall.
"Ellie! Mama said-"
The pair looked at the door to see the oldest child at five years old, Elias, standing in the doorway.
"Daddy! You're awake!"
"Yeah, buddy," Jake chuckled. "I'm awake.
"Daddy, you don't have to worry about the chores today!" His son beamed at him, joining Ellie by the bed.
"And why's that?"
"'Cause Uncle Bradley came by with Auntie Birdie and showed me how to do everything! I fed the goats and milked the cows all by myself!"
"Look at you!" Jake grinned, reaching out to ruffle his son's blond hair. "I'm so proud of you, little man."
Elias puffed out his chest in pride just as you walked through the door with a tray. You scowled at your children when you saw them by the bed.
"Elias Emmanuel and Eleanor Ruth, what did I tell you about disturbing daddy today?"
Jake looked over at his kids and shot them a playful wink. "I'd skedaddle if I were you two."
The siblings giggled before racing past you and out of the room. You gave an exasperated sigh along with an eye roll before walking over to sit at the edge of the bed. Jake scooted up so that he was sitting against the headboard. You placed the tray in front of him before checking his temperature once more, frowning.
"You're fever hasn't broken yet," you murmured, looking at him as he began to sip on the broth you had brought him.
"You doin' okay downstairs by yourself with the baby and the hellions?" He asked you, furrowing his brow in worry. You smiled softly at him, brushing his sweaty locks out of his face.
"Bradley and Birdie are still here with Simon and Cora. I think Birdie is using Noah to try and convince Bradley to have another one," you joked. Jake snorted.
"Like he needs convincing," he muttered. You sighed, giving him an apologetic look.
"I'm sorry the kids woke you," you murmured. He shook his head.
"You kiddin' me?" He grinned. "I love when my kids take care of me almost as much as I love when their mama does."

What would dhtn!Jake do if Scout moaned "you're so good to me Jakey" while they made love?
Yeah, let's talk about it! (Smut under the cut)
Jake loved seeing you like this. Your face was pinched in pleasure with the apples of your cheeks flushed red as you grinded on top of him, his hands on your hips to guide your movements. You let out little whines and whimpers as you rode him, hands splayed across his chest as you lost yourself in the pleasure.
"Look at you, honey girl," he cooed up at you, thrusting up into you, drawing a loud groan from your parted lips. "Look so pretty like this. Love when you lose control for me. You're so prim and proper, no one but me knows how much of a whore you are for my cock."
"Jakey," you whined, leaning forward to connect your lips to his. He obliged you, licking into your mouth with slow, steady strokes that matched the way his hips rose to meet your own.
"You gonna come for me, pretty girl? Your cunt is grippin' me so hard, she's chokin' my dick," he groaned out, hearing the obscene squelch as you continued to rock on top of him. "You're so fuckin' wet, baby girl. No one else can make you this wet, huh?"
"No," you gasped, earning a chuckle from the man underneath you. He reached his hand around to draw lazy, but precise circles on your clit and you threw your head back as the coil tightened in your lower stomach. "Just you, Jakey."
"That's right, just me. Only I can make you lose your mind like this. Shit, honey, I can feel how close your are. C'mon, sweet girl. Come for me. Come all over my cock."
His words pushed you over the edge, and you let out a wanton moan as you came around him. Jake moaned, still moving your hips against him as he chased his own release. You were still riding the wave of your orgasm when you reached out to cup his cheek, placing a soft kiss to his lips.
"So good for me, Jakey," you cooed at him. Jake thrust up into you with a pathetic cry. You looked down at him to see his eyes lidded with lust, mouth agape as he stared at you. You let out a soft chuckle at the delirious state he was in. "You goin' to be a good boy for me, and come?"
"Shit!" he cried out, the veins in his neck bulging as he hammered into you even harder.
"Can feel how hard you are inside of me, always make me feel so full. The only one who can make me feel this good. You gonna come, Jakey?"
"Uh huh," he whimpered, thrusts starting to grow sloppy as he chased his release, your words only spurring him on. You saw tears begin to pool in the corners of his eyes as he let out another groan. "Feels so good."
"Yeah?" you hummed. "I feel good wrapped around you? Squeezing you? You going to come in me? Give me all of your cum?"
"Fuck," he shouted, head hitting the headboard of the bed with a soft thump. "Gonna give it all to you, honey. Can feel it comin'. Shit, there's so much."
"C'mon, Jakey," you whispered, lips ghosting over his, his breaths coming out in strained pants and moans. "Wanna feel you fill me up. Wanna feel you drippin' out of me."
Jake's eyes widened as he stilled inside of you. You felt the hot spurts of him coat your inner walls as you gasped out a smile, still grinding down onto him. Jake's moans turned to whimpers as you kept moving.
"So sensitive, darlin', please," he begged you, but his hands were still helping to move your hips.
"Don't want to waste any of it, baby boy," you cooed, gasping when you felt him twitch inside of you at the pet name. Finally, you slowed to a stop, hissing as you pulled off of him. Jake moved to lay you down as he stared down at the combined mixture of your releases leaking out of you. He reached up his fingers, scooping up what had leaked out of you before slowly thrusting it back in. You let out a gasp as he reached up to place a gentle kiss to your lips, resting his forehead against yours.
"I love you," he smiled softly. You brushed your nose against his.
"I love you too."

Do you see pregnancy sex in Scout and Jake's future? 👀
Okay, I wasn't going to answer this until later, but it's haunting me and so I can't work on this chapter until I answer it. Smut below the cut.
-
The room was filled with a pleasant silence as you roused from your sleep. The soft glow from the sun as it peaked through the curtains warmed your face, and you let out a contented sigh. The arms wrapped around you were cradling your swollen belly, and one of those hands moved up to rest on your hip.
"Good mornin', mama," came the raspy morning voice of your husband. You hummed, turning so that you were able to face him.
"Good morning, handsome," you breathed with a smile, a smile of Jake's own crawling across his lips as he looked at you. His hair was mussed as he laid against the pillow, and the hand that lay on your hip moved up to cup your cheek.
"You look so beautiful," he all but whispered, stroking your cheek lightly as he gazed at you in adoration. You reached up to place a soft kiss to his lips, and Jake quickly deepened the kiss. He rolled you both over so that you lied on your back with him hovering over you, his hands reaching down to ghost over your thighs where your nightdress had risen up.
"Jake," you breathed into his mouth, but he shushed you.
"Let me take care of you, mama," he whispered against your lips. "Let me make you feel good."
He moved to wrap your legs around his waist, and you eagerly complied, reaching up to cup his face in your hands. Jake kissed you harder as he positioned himself at your entrance, running his length slowly up and down your folds. Finally, he granted you mercy and slowly slid into you with a groan.
"Always so good for me, angel," he groaned. "Feels like heaven bein' inside of you."
"Jake, please," you groaned, reaching up to place light kisses on any part of his face you could reach.
"I know, honey girl, I know," he cooed, slowly starting to rock into you. You always felt so full when he had you like this. "Can't get enough of you like this."
Your groans turned to whimpers as he starts to rock his hips harder.
"Yeah, you like that?" he chuckled. "Like it when I'm balls deep inside of you? I know I do. This sweet, little cunt always drivin' me mad when she's squeezin' me this tight. I could die a happy man right now."
"This pussy is already weepin' for me, pretty girl," he continued mercilessly, the sound of his thighs slapping to meet yours filling the room. "Grippin' me so hard like she never wants me to leave. God damn, baby. Already got you pregnant, sugar, and your pretty cunt is already askin' me for another."
You let out a cry as he gave you a particularly hard, deliberate thrust. You felt him smile as he placed opened mouth kisses to the column of your neck, ending with a nip to your ear lobe. "You want that, darlin'? You want me to fill you up again until I'm leakin' out of you?"
"Please," you whined, already feeling the coil in your belly pulled tight and ready to snap.
"Can feel you squeezin' me, mama. You wanna cum? You wanna milk me dry and take all my spunk in this pretty pussy?"
You nod your head, the pressure building higher and higher as he snapped his hips into yours. He pulls back to look into your eyes, a look of unadulterated love passing through them as he gazed down at you. "I'll never say no to you, angel. C'mon, sweetheart. Cum for me."
Those words are all you needed, and the dam in your stomach burst. With a loud cry, your orgasm washed over you.
"That's it, baby," Jake grunts, rutting into you harder as you squeezed him impossibly tighter. He buried his face into your throat as he chased his own release. "Milk me for all I'm worth. I have so much cum for you, my balls are achin'. C'mon, squeeze my cock jus' like that. Wanna cum in you so bad. Gonna give you my load until you're drippin' with me. You like that?"
He's practically blubbering, loud whimpers being torn from his lips. "Ah, shit, darlin'. I'm gonna cum, fuck it's so much. Gonna give it all to you and you're gonna take it. Oh, FUCK. Here it comes, baby. Take it, take my cum-OH SHIT."
You felt the hot spurts of his release shoot inside you as he clung to you like a man possessed. He rutted into you through his release, thrusts turning into slow grinds as he continued to move inside of you. His groans gave way to whimpers, overstimulating himself in a bid to make sure you were truly filled. Finally, he stopped, letting out a shuddering breath. You ran a hand gently through his hair as he came back to himself. He pushed up onto his arms, looking down at you with a sheepish grin.
"Hi," he said softly, turning to place a chaste kiss into the palm of your hand.
"Hi," you giggled, wiggling your hips and squeezing around him where he was still seated inside you.
"Scout!" he cried out with a groan. "You're gonna be the death of me."
"I thought you said you could die a happy man?" you teased, earning a playful glare from him. His gaze softened after a moment and he leaned down to press a kiss to the tip of your nose.
"I love you," he said quietly. You reached up to place a kiss onto his lips, stroking your thumb across his cheek.
"I love you too."

Baby guuuuurl…
What happened in the barn
👀👀👀
My love, I'm so glad you asked 🥰🥰
Content Warning: Smut, Oral (m receiving), dirty talk, teasing, begging, roughness, degradation, praise kink, some fluff at the end with a horny Jake Seresin. Think that's it, but let me know.
Word Count: 2k
Minors Do Not Interact - 18+ ONLY below the cut
You had ventured outside in the middle of the day to feed the scraps from breakfast to the goats Benji had acquired recently, throwing the contents of the bucket into the pen when you heard the rattling and banging coming from the barn. Wiping the sweat from your brow, you ventured towards the structure, pulling the door open with a soft creak as you stepped inside.
The banging and rustling was louder now, and you ventured towards the back where the noise was the loudest, stopping dead in your tracks at the sight in front of you.
Jake was holding up a board to the enclosure gate, a few nails gritted between his teeth as he hammered away, sweat soaking his golden skin and causing his shirt to cling to him. His chest peeked out from where he had the top few buttons undone, giving you a delightful view of the chest hair that adorned him. His brow was creased in concentration, but as you shifted on your feet, he glanced up at you, surprised dancing in his green irises.
"Hey, honey girl," he greeted with a grin, taking the nails from his mouth and shoving them in his pocket as he stood from where he was kneeling. "What brings you by here?"
The muscles of his arms bulged from where he had rolled his sleeves up, and before you could stop yourself, you crossed the distance between the two of you, backing him up against the far wall as you pressed your lips against his. Jake made a startled noise before dropping the hammer and bring his hands up, one to cradle your jaw and the other settling on your waist.
You kissed him hungrily, licking into his mouth with a fervor that was so unlike you to initiate, not that Jake was complaining. You released his lips, trailing kisses along his jaw and licking at the shell of his ear, humming at the salty taste of sweat before nipping at his ear lobe.
Jake let out a shuddering breath, lost in the sensations of your lips on him, hand that was cradling your jaw coming down to rest on your hip. You left a trail of kisses down the column of his throat, sucking marks into the skin that you were sure to be embarrassed by later, but right now you couldn't find it in you to care.
"Scout," he groaned, eye closing and head falling back as you found a particularly sensitive spot, focusing your attention on the noises you were eliciting from him as you continued down to his collar bone, hand's sliding up to sneak under his shirt and attempting to push it off of him. He reached up to grab your hands, green eyes peering down at you with a mixture of desire and amusement.
"Pretty girl, what has gotten in to you?" He chuckled, taking in your hungry gaze as you tried to pull your hands free of his grasp. Whining when he held steady, you leaned forward and bit into his shoulder before trailing your lips up to whisper into his ear.
"Need you," you keened, nuzzling into his neck. He sucked in a sharp breath, pausing for a moment before letting go of your wrists.
"You have me," he said, watching as you practically ripped his shirt away from his shoulders, moving to unbutton the remainder of his buttons before you popped those off. He knew you'd complain about having to mend his shirt later if he didn't.
Your nails raked down his torso, and Jake let out a pleasured hiss at the feeling, allowing his head to fall back once more as his gaze followed your movements. Your hands came to stop at the button of his trousers, quickly undoing them. You gazed up at him through your lashes, a smirk slowly making its way onto your lips as you dropped down to your knees before him, and Jake swore he had died and gone to heaven. He was nearing painfully hard now, seeing you on your knees, nuzzling at the growing tent in his pants. A hand came down to rest on the back of your head as you stared up reverently at him.
"Can I taste you?" You whispered, and Jake nearly came right then and there. Swallowing thickly, he nodded, not trusting his voice. He helped you shove his pants off over his hips, his cock springing free, and your eyes twinkled in delight at the sight.
You laid a hand on his thigh, using your other to grip him, and Jake let out a staggering breath at the feel of your hand on him. You stroked experimentally, earning a pleasured moan. You leaned forward, darting your tongue out experimentally to lick at the head of his cock, humming at the salty taste.
"Shit," Jake grit out, the hand on the back of your head threading through your hair now while the other gripped the rail behind him. Encourage, you took the tip into your mouth, suckling lightly, running your tongue through the slit, and Jake swore he saw stars. You had just begun, and already he felt he was close, feeling like a teenager all over again at the feel of your warm mouth surrounding him.
You pulled off of him, a wicked gleam in your eye as you ran the tip of your tongue along the vein that ran along the length of the underside of him and back up.
"Scout, please," Jake whined, pulling lightly on your hair, chest heaving as he gave you an imploring look. You slipped the tip back into your mouth, resuming your teasing as you continued to only suckle the tip. Jake let out a desperate whimper, and it wasn't until you saw the tears shine in his eyes, breaths coming out in desperate pants as he tried to push his hips gently forward that you gave in, taking as much of him into your mouth as you could.
You gagged on the length of him as he screwed his eyes shut with a loud moan of your name, his member twitching in the back of your throat. You started a steady rhythm, bobbing your head back and forth to try and take more of him, but what you couldn't fit was stroked by your hand, your other still resting on his thigh for support.
Jake was lost in the sensation of your mouth, tight and warm around him, and he let out a particularly loud cry as you hollowed your cheeks around him, hand leaving his thigh to cup his balls. He pried his eyes open, staring down at you and finding you already looking at him, a wicked gleam in your eyes as you gagged around him.
"Look at you," he cooed, finally finding his voice. "You're choking on me, and still you can't get enough."
You hummed around him, sending pleasure shooting up his spine as he gasped, using the hand in your hair to guide you up and down his length.
"Love the feel of your lips on my cock," he continued. "Love knowing that this prim and proper lady needs my dick so bad that she's willing to get on her knees for it. To debauch herself for me. What would your high society friends think if they could see how much of a whore you become for me?"
You groaned around him, trying to concentrate on breathing through your nose as you took even more of him, the tip of his cock nudging the back of your throat as drool ran down your chin. You were soaked, you knew it. The combination of his words and the feeling of being used making your folds drip with slick.
"They won't ever know, though," Jake gasped, pleasure clear on his face his hands gripped the rail so hard that his knuckles turned white. "You like this? This is for my eyes only. Only I get to see how much of a slut you are. My own personal whore, isn't that right? Can have you anywhere I want you, jus' have to say the word."
His hips were meeting your face with shallow thrusts, still careful not to hurt you as he chased his pleasure. You could feel yourself dripping onto the ground, your undergarments surely ruined from how wet you were. As if reading your mind, Jake's lips curled up into a smirk as he continued, words slurring as he grew closer to reaching his orgasm.
"Bet your dripping right now. Only whores love to be used like this, and pretty girl, I love using you. Always so good for me. My good girl, taking all of me and letting me use her mouth like this. Fuck. Can't-can't get enough of how good you feel. Gonna come down your throat til you're full o' me. You like that? You want it? Shit, darlin'. I'm comin' - fuck. It's so much."
You felt the first spirts of his seed shoot down your throat as he held you to him, gasps and moans leaving him as his orgasm washed over him. You swallowed all of it, humming. His grip in your hair loosened as he came down from his high, your mouth working over him gently to make sure not a drop was missed.
"Feels so good," he whined, head lolling to the side as he twitched in your mouth, the aftershocks causing his thighs to twitch. You got lost in the feel of him, still running your tongue along him reverently before a hand came to rest at your jaw, slowly pulling you off with a hiss from the sensitivity. You released Jake with a quiet pop, looking up at him demurely as his chest heaved from exertion. He stared at you for a moment, thumb stroking along your jaw before helping you to stand, pulling you against him in a heated kiss. He moaned at the taste of him on your tongue, licking hungrily into your mouth before finally pulling away.
"What on earth was that for?" He asked, green eyes searching you with wonder laced through them. You smiled shyly, giving him a shrug.
"No reason," you offered. Jake laughed in disbelief, head falling before looking back at you.
"My turn," he purred, nuzzling his nose up against yours as his hands moved to draw up your skirts. You laughed, shaking your head and pulling away from him. Jake pouted, brows creasing in confusion as he tried to reach back out for you, but you swatted his hand away.
"We both have work to do still," you smiled, giggling when he pressed himself against you once more.
"You're not gonna let me taste you?" He asked, cocking his head to the side. "Doesn't seem fair."
"Jake," you scoffed, prying his hands from your waist as you once again attempted to back out of the stall, "It's getting late and the sun will set soon. There's still so much left to do."
"I don' care," he muttered, pulling you back into his arms and pressing his lips up and down the column of your throat. "Wanna taste you."
"Later," you gasped as he found the spot the made your toes curl. He hummed, seeming to mull it over.
"Fine," he conceded, pressing one more kiss to your collarbone before letting you go with a warning look. "But I'm holding you to that, honey girl."
You bit your bottom lip to try and hide your smile, swinging your arms before clasping your hands behind your back as you backed up towards the barn doors. Jake leaned against the stall door, watching you with a grin before giving you a scowl.
"You better get before I change my mind," he warned, pointing a finger your way. You giggled, turning around to get back to work.
