Kana-Boon x Yahagi x Otsuki for Natalie Music (2015)

KANA-BOON released the single "Diver," the theme song for the movie "BORUTO -NARUTO THE MOVIE-," on August 5th.
"BORUTO -NARUTO THE MOVIE-" is a feature-length anime starring Boruto, the son of Naruto, the protagonist of the popular manga "NARUTO," which was serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump." The original author, Masashi Kishimoto, is the executive producer and writer of the script.
KANA-BOON's song "Silhouette," which was produced as the opening theme for the anime series "NARUTO Shippuden," caught the attention of Kishimoto and Jump's editor, Jo Otsuki, who asked them to write a theme song for the movie. In response to this offer, the "NARUTO" fan group wrote "Diver" specifically for the movie.
To celebrate this collaboration, Natalie Music held a roundtable discussion with KANA-BOON, Otsuki, and Yahagi Kosuke (currently editor-in-chief of Jump SQ), the original editor in charge of "NARUTO". They talked about their thoughts on "NARUTO".

──When "Silhouette" was released last November, we had a roundtable discussion with Otsuki and the members of KANA-BOON, during which Otsuki said, "I really love 'Silhouette'. It's a really great song."
Jo Otsuki: Yes. The editorial department also received feedback about the song from Jump readers.
──Do reactions to anime theme songs usually reach the editorial department?
Otsuki: It's certainly rare, but "Silhouette" received a lot of attention.
──Why did "Silhouette" resonate so well with "NARUTO" fans?
Maguro Taniguchi (Vo, G): I think it was because we love "NARUTO". I wonder if that feeling reached the people who listened to it.
Hayato Koga (G): I think it was also because we imagined the images from the anime while we were making it. I think it matched well with the image of "NARUTO" that we had in mind. However, we don't usually make things like that, and I think "Silhouette" was the first time we made something while imagining the images.
Kosuke Yahagi: I received the "Silhouette" CD and played it at home, then my daughter asked me, "Is that a Naruto song?" even though she had been away from the Naruto anime for a while because of her entrance exams.
──The song itself had a "NARUTO" vibe. KANA-BOON wrote "Diver" as the theme song for the movie, but how did this collaboration come about?
Otsuki: When I went to talk to [Kishimoto] sensei about the theme song for the movie, we talked about how we wanted KANA-BOON to do the theme song. We both had wanted KANA-BOON to do the theme song for the movie version from the beginning.
KANA-BOON: Thank you from all of us.
Otsuki: It's true that "Silhouette" was a perfect fit for "NARUTO", and the lyrics contained a message that would resonate with people who love "NARUTO". Kishimoto-sensei also said that when he heard "Silhouette", he said that he "cried".
Yahagi: In my opinion, Kishimoto-sensei is someone who rarely cries.
Taniguchi: I guess we can call ourselves "the band that made Kishimoto-sensei cry" (laughs).
Otsuki: [Kishimoto] sensei said, "I felt frustrated." "I wanted to sing it too, and I wanted to come up with a theme like the one they sang in 'Silhouette.'" It seems he was jealous of KANA-BOON's creativity.
Taniguchi: So that's the reason why he cried (laughs).
──After Kishimoto-sensei and Otsuki-san decided to ask KANA-BOON to write the theme song for "BORUTO -NARUTO THE MOVIE-", did things go smoothly?
Otsuki: We made progress.
Yahagi: That's not something that happens very often, is it? Movies belong to the people who make them, so I feel like we shouldn't be making designations or anything like that.
Taniguchi: I see. When we were working on "Silhouette," we were excited to be able to create the opening theme for "NARUTO!", but when we were asked to do the theme song for the movie, there were some hurdles to overcome. We started working on it with the desire to write a song that would fit the movie, and to create a song that would be good for us. We weren't trying to pander to the movie, but we weren't just doing it for our own selfish desires either… We tried to make it a well-balanced song.
──KANA-BOON mentioned that after releasing "Silhouette," children who are fans of "NARUTO" started coming to their live performances, and the audience demographic changed, right? Has your attitude or feelings towards music changed because of this situation?
Taniguchi: Yes, there was. I felt motivated in a different direction than before. There's a chance that KANA-BOON could be the first rock band these kids have ever seen or heard. I began to feel a sense of responsibility and gratitude for that.

──What were your thoughts when you heard "Diver" Yahagi-san?
Yahagi: You've been reading "NARUTO" since you were a child, working hard in a band, working hard and succeeding… I felt that this song was born because you've always had Naruto in a corner of your life. I felt that everyone was talking about Naruto from their own perspective after looking back on their past. Until now, the opening and ending themes for anime have often been written objectively and coolly, picking up keywords such as the situation Naruto is in, the existence of rivals, and ninjas, but "Diver" talks about Naruto and Boruto from their own perspective. This was a first-time experience for me, and I was really moved. I thought that after 15 years since the series started, we could finally hear a song like this. It's not something that can be made in a flash. Even when I read the lyrics, there were quite a few things that came to mind. I think it's a song that can move people of all generations.
Taniguchi: It's true that it's a "subjective song." "NARUTO" was the first time I felt like I was the main character, or like I was in the world of the manga.
──Taniguchi-san is a songwriter, so he is able to express his feelings about "NARUTO" through words and sounds, but how did the players, Koga-san, Meshida-san, and Koizumi-san, share and express those feelings?
Koga: As with "Silhouette," I imagined the frames of the anime, found sounds that matched those images, and arranged them. I arranged it with "NARUTO" in mind, and I think that passion comes through in the sound.
Koizumi Takahiro (Dr): Me too. The sound changes quite a bit depending on your mood. I put in the feelings I had when watching "NARUTO" and the excitement I felt when my favorite band was performing the theme song.
Meshida Yuma (B): The atmosphere of the studio really comes out in the songs, but this time, I was happy when we were asked to do the theme song for the movie, and I was like, "We're going to make the theme song!" During the recording, I think we were able to properly capture that atmosphere in the sound.

Otsuki: I listen to "Diver" every day. It sounds even better when combined with the ending credits of the movie.
KANA-BOON: Thank you!
Otsuki: The more I listen to it, the better it gets. The lyrics express the conflict of trying and trying but not succeeding, but having something I want to do. It really links to the story of the movie, and I feel that the lyrics are especially relatable to boys. At first, Kishimoto-sensei and I were worried that it might be too similar to "NARUTO". I thought it didn't need to be so similar, but after talking to everyone in KANA-BOON, I realized that the lyrics are universal and that it's a song aimed at a wide range of people, not just Naruto and Boruto… so I don't have anything in particular to say.
Yahagi: After all that, he said, "I don't have anything to say" (laughs). At first, I thought it was a song about Naruto and Boruto because the lyrics mentioned "blue eyes," but after listening to it a few times, I realized, "Oh, that's not it. It's not just that." As I read the lyrics, I remembered the difficult times I went through.
Taniguchi: What was the difficult time like?
Yahagi: It was really tough for the first few years after joining the editorial department. The serialized work I was in charge of didn't get the evaluation I expected, and it didn't get many votes in the popularity polls, which was really hard. It was the same with "NARUTO -Naruto-," there were tough times. Even so, I was working hard together with [Kishimoto] sensei. And the feeling I had when I went to get the manuscript running towards Nakayama Road at dawn, breathing out white puffs of breath, thinking "I got an amazing manuscript!", came back to me when I listened to the song.
KANA-BOON: Hahaha.
Taniguchi: Why where you running?
Yahagi: We have to hurry, otherwise we won't be able to make it in time for printing (laughs). Like "Silhouette," "Diver" resonates with people of all ages, even those who are going through hard times, and it makes people who have already achieved something feel like they can try again from here. It's a really great song. I love it.
──I heard that all of you from KANA-BOON have seen the movie. How did you feel seeing your songs playing alongside the film?
Taniguchi: It was different from "Silhouette." This time it was the ending theme, so I was worried about whether "Diver" would be able to close the work properly, but it turned out that way and I was really moved.
Koizumi: Yes, yes. The movie was good too.
Meshida: I cried.
Koga: However, as the film got to the second half, I got nervous in the screening room, thinking, "Oh no, our song is going to be played."
Taniguchi: Yes (laughs). I wrote "Diver" after reading the script, but the movie was much more moving than the script. There were some parts that were more moving than we had imagined. Also, the battle scenes were incredibly cool.
Koga: That's true.
Taniguchi: There were lots of scenes that made me go "Wow!"
──Did Kishimoto-sensei say anything about the movie? You were also involved in the script this time.
Otsuki: At the first screening of the movie, he said it was "perfect." What he was particular about was the time allocation of the three-act structure. Each scene had a clear meaning, and it was arranged in a way that would make the viewer feel interesting without getting bored… he got that right, and the action was amazing (laughs). Depending on how he was portrayed, Boruto could easily become a character that people dislike, but he expressed the loneliness of his feelings through imagery and the timing, so I was grateful that we were able to empathize with Boruto while watching the movie.
It's not just about winning.

──Yahagi-san, when "NARUTO" first began serialization, did you expect it to become such a long-running series that would have such an impact on the younger generation?
Yahagi: No, no, I didn't think so. At first, I really wanted to make sure it didn't end in 10 weeks. When it first started, there was a strict rule that unpopular works had to end in 10 weeks. Once it had passed 10 weeks, I talked to [Kishimoto] sensei about wanting to continue it until 10 volumes. I think he continued it while somehow overcoming various obstacles, and I was in charge of it until 2008. Around that time, there was talk of it ending in about 3 more years. The content was more or less decided, but it ended up continuing until 2014. It was supposed to end in 3 years, but it lasted twice as long, 6 years, but it didn't feel like it took that long of a detour.
──Why do you think "NARUTO" has become so popular with promising young people like KANA-BOON and Otsuki-san?
Yahagi: Many of the writers in "Weekly Shonen Jump" are young. It's amazing what young writers draw for the first time. It contains all of their thoughts, worries, and passions from the time they were born until now. Among them, the main character of "NARUTO" looks just like Kishimoto-sensei. I think it's the same for music and manga, but before you get recognized, there's a time when you think, "What am I doing with my life?" or "Is it okay to do this?" Kishimoto-sensei is the eldest son from a rural family, and his father was a public servant. He has a serious personality, and I think he felt a lot of pressure. After graduating from university and going through a lot of hardships to get a serialization, he must have felt that he absolutely had to be recognized by the readers. That's why Naruto shouted out the desire to be recognized that everyone has, and fulfilled the dreams of children that even a loser can become a hero if he tries hard. I think readers sympathized with the main character, Naruto, and projected themselves onto him.
KANA-BOON: Yeah, yeah.

Yahagi: By the way, which character is your favorite?
Koga: Rock Lee.
Koizumi: Akimichi Chouji.
Taniguchi: Huh, Chouji? I had no idea.
Otsuki: Did you start to like him when he sprouted wings on his back?
Koizumi: Ah, yes. Around over there.
Meshida: For me it would be Uchiha Itachi. His tsundere nature is…
Koga: He's the ultimate tsundere. Although the "tsun" part is a bit too big (laughs).
Taniguchi: Mine is Hyuga Hinata.
Yahagi: Surprisingly, for none of you is Naruto (laughs).
Taniguchi: No no! I love Naruto, and on top of that, I love the characters. I wanted to ask you, how did you meet Kishimoto-sensei?
Yahagi: It was first submitted to a manga award. When I read it, I thought, "This is amazing. It's a work I've never read before." At the time, Kishimoto-sensei was a university student living in Hakata. It was a time before mobile phones, so if you called the university dormitory, an older woman from the dormitory would answer, but the call would automatically hung up.
KANA-BOON: hahaha.
Yahagi: I thought he might be busy, so I didn't call back, and later I would get a message saying, "You called, didn't you?" This was 20 years ago. After that, Kishimoto-sensei graduated from university, returned to his hometown in Okayama, and while helping with the family business, he was drawing manga, but it seems he was struggling. I received letters from him saying things like, "I'm drawing manga, but will it ever amount to anything?" There were also offers to work as an assistant, but I discouraged him from doing that and he continued drawing the manga, which is how we managed to get it serialized.
Taniguchi: How did "NARUTO" get started?
Yahagi: Kishimoto-sensei's submitted work ("Karakuri") won an honorable mention in the 132nd February Hop☆Step Award, but getting serialized was a little difficult. So, as we had several meetings to see if we could do it with a different subject, Kishimoto-sensei came up with the name of "NARUTO". We published one one-shot in a special issue, but at that time Naruto was set as a fox monster, not a human. I thought that if the main character was a monster, readers might not be able to get into the main character's feelings, so I asked him to draw another work with a different subject, but it didn't work… I still remember that I hadn't heard from him for a while during that period, and one day I called him and he said, "Actually, I'm currently drawing a manga for a young adult magazine. Yahagi, can you introduce me to an editor at Super Jump?" I persuaded him, and we came to the conclusion that we should make Naruto a human and have the monster sealed away, and the serialization began. If I had introduced Kishimoto-sensei to "Super Jump", "NARUTO" wouldn't exist (laughs).
Taniguchi: Oh no, oh no! Have you ever felt like the series was about to end?
Yahagi: There were many times. It was fine at first, but it was difficult to come up with something after the battle with Haku and Zabuza in "Land of Waves". We both moved forward without really thinking ahead. We tried adding the Chunin Exams after the "Land of Waves" arc. The story of the fight with Gaara was the most difficult. When we were having a meeting on the phone, [Kishimoto] sensei and I were talking about Gaara's character, but he said, "I'm not sure". [Kishimoto] sensei seemed unsure when he submitted the manuscript, and the survey results were actually not good.
KANA-BOON: Hmmm.
Yahagi: I was really scared that it would end like that! I wrote some really dark episodes, and when Naruto despaired, saying he couldn't beat Gaara, I think the readers were disappointed too. But then, when Naruto said, "I know someone stronger than Gaara," and won, the ratings went up dramatically. After all, when the author himself lacks confidence, the survey results aren't good either. Everyone says, "You're lying when you say you were worried about the series being canceled," but I was quite worried all the time.
Taniguchi: That's surprising.
──Manga magazine editors work hand in hand with authors to create stories and characters.
Yahagi: Because it's a weekly magazine, we have to have a meeting to make it, otherwise we won't be able to finish it in time. Sometimes I suggest characters. What the author wants to draw is the most important thing, but if we don't share and refine our image, it can be difficult down the line. That's why we discuss it thoroughly. By the way, do you have a deadline, KANA-BOON?
Taniguchi: Yes, there is. But when I hear Yahagi-san's story, I think our deadlines aren't that big of a deal (laughs). It's like making a single once a week, right? And if the comics were an album…
Meshida: That's impossible (laughs)

Yahagi: Have you all met Kishimoto-sensei?
Taniguchi: Yes. Otsuki-san said before that he was "surprisingly nice" and that was absolutely true. He was incredibly kind.
Meshida: Before I met him, I thought sensei was just being nice because he was told to, but he turned out to be an incredibly nice person (laughs).
Taniguchi: It's like the creator is truly embodying Naruto. I think it's because he draws that kind of work. I think it depends on the person, but even if the music is great, if the person's character isn't that good, it's a different story. I didn't feel any gap between the person and their work. I think that's pretty amazing.
Yahagi and Otsuki: (nod vigorously)
Otsuki: I think his work is interesting because it shows his true humanity. He chooses themes that he is interested in, so he can delve deeper into them and create a sense of reality.
I want you to listen to it purely as part of the film.
──The movie will be released on August 7th. How would you like people to listen to "Diver"?
Taniguchi: I would be happiest if people who watched the movie listened to it purely as part of the film. I don't think it's necessary for them to listen to it as "our song". For example, I hope that when children who watched the movie grow up, they remember that KANA-BOON sang the ending theme to "BORUTO -NARUTO THE MOVIE-". I made "Silhouette" with that feeling in mind.
──You'd be happy if it worked as a theme song for the movie, rather than just being listened to as a song by your band.
Taniguchi: Yes. That was my number one goal when I was making the song. I was making music, something I love, and I was also involved with my favorite show, "NARUTO." That alone made me very happy.
Yahagi: I'm so happy. "NARUTO" is a story about Naruto, who was lonely but worked hard to grow and gradually gained recognition from various people, one by one. I am encouraged by the presence of KANA-BOON, who have come to love Naruto and have turned it into a song that gives us courage. I truly think it's like a dream that you created such a wonderful song for us.

I know I'm probably a weirdo for this, but one day I got to thinking, what if Pokemon was lingually accurate? Like, if characters were named appropriately based on their region? So I actually went through Bulbapedia and compiled a list of every major character's names in other languages. And just in case anyone else was curious, I thought I'd share it.
I'm going from the English base, so I'm majorly not including Unova, Galar, and most of Alola. Ones that are weird or are migrants I give explanations for.

Paldea: Spanish and Portuguese I look at both languages because Paldea is based on the Iberian Peninsula and not just Spain. However, with Portuguese, I'm having to look at Brazilian Portuguese, which is not quite the same as European Portuguese, because that's almost all that's on Bulbapedia. I generally choose whether to use Spanish or Portuguese based on if said name is also the same as the English and/or Japanese name. Or default if only one is available. Also uhh my order might be a bit weird here because I didn't get to actually play these games. I kinda assumed you go through the teachers before Gym Leaders, so...yeah. I can re-order it later if that's wrong or confusing.
Florian: From an unknown region, but the same in English, German, Spanish, French, and Italian.
Juliana: From an unknown region, but the same in English, German, Spanish, French, and Italian.
Nemo(?): She is noted to not be from Paldea but her home isn't specified so it could be anything. Nemona is her name in English and E. Portuguese, Nemo in Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and Thai, Noêmia in B. Portuguese, Nemila in German, Nemola in Indonesian, and Nemi in Italian. The odd ones out are Mencía in Spanish and Menzi in French.

Dr. Pryce is the chief medical officer. He’s a bit like Bones, but less grumpy. Also: he is a Vulcan.
Dr. Elm, xenobiologist
Ensign Lyra, assistant to Dr. Elm.
Lieutenants Koga and Janine are both security officers.
Ensign Ethan Gold — operations.
Ensign Silver— command.
Ensign Kris— science officer, currently assisting Lt. Eusine.

Lt. Will— ship‘s counselor and diplomatic consort. He is a Betazoid.

Blank Page Brigade Spotlight: Assistants (6/5) + extra
6 of 5? yes, because last time I left off at 5/5 but now I have obtained scans of the Blank Page Brigade for vol.31 and vol.32
At the end of volumes of Black Clover is space for the “Blank Page Brigade.” This particular “brigade” is composed of the assistants (you know, those who help with art) and others from the Black Clover manga team, lead by “Captain Tabata.”

"carry your heartbeat" let me explain... this seems to be a reference to a song lyric from Exile's "Choo Choo Train" and made popular in Japan a certain dance move they called the ぐるぐるダンス ("guruguru dance") or ロールダンス ("roll dance"). Some meme examples here [exhibit A // exhibit B // exhibit C]. However it turns out this move was showcased back in the 90s in "I Like the Way (The Kissing Game)" by American R&B group Hi-Five

Hayakawa bringing a new attribute to Black Clover and a crossover!
took me a while to find what 金斗雲 was but apparently it's an alternate writing of 筋斗雲 which is the name of that cloud that they use to fly around in Dragonball which Funimation translated as "flying nimbus" ☁ guess Hayakawa wasn't pure enough...
Kazuhiro Wakao really did indeed write "godfather" ゴッドファーザー now if he means like from the movie of the same name or like the position of a godfather idk but what are you doing down that bad for that gal Wakao why out yourself like this...
Shutaro Koga answered with 社長 shachou which translates to “president (of a company)” with alternate translations of "manager", "director" and "CEO" so I went with "The CEO" because it sounded more quippy :p
Captain Tabata didn't answer the Blank Page Brigade question because the question was about himself, so instead of the usual, he provided a new drawing of Asta & Yuno
what does it say within the black arrow and why didn't I replace the words? well that says something like from page 137 onward it's all about Tabata, and yeah it's like stuff about his process and questions and so on but that's not included in this post, it's a lot and my reading level is not that high *finger guns*
21.? Uemura?
according to a comment by Tabata in Weekly Shonen Jump back in April: “My mysterious assistant Uemura-kun, who hasn't been with me for very long, has a one-shot in this week's issue of Jump in Japan! What's it like?"
the one-shot in question may be Koi, Tokidoki Chounouryoku – is the assistant Taishin Uemura?
I did not find their name in vol.32, which was published in early April. Maybe Uemura will be in the blank page brigade for volume 33?
