#daisy jones & the six#like you don't even have to ship them in order to know that daisy/billy are that trope#but so many times we see enemies to lovers be this sanitized garbage where they exchange one insult and are actually friends and thats it#meanwhile billy cant even stand being in the same room as daisy#and you know he's watching her every move like a hawk#in his own words 'daisy is going to ruin us (me)'#YEAH BOY

Hello! Hope you're still taking requests for djats🤞
If so, I'd like to ask for prompt #13 and #41 with Warren, hopefully with a very shy reader (being dragged there to meet everyone by Daisy, maybe..)
❤️❤️❤️
P.s. I'm a long fan of My Favourite Henderson and I'm glad you're back at writing💋
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT
13: spin the bottle
41: love at first sight
fandom: daisy jones & the six
parings: warren rojas x f reader, best friend daisy jones x f reader
warnings: alcohol use
You had been friends with Daisy Jones since you were 11 years old. The pair of you were inseparable, you had always done everything together, despite your differences. Daisy was outgoing and loud, she was a wildfire. You were shy and reserved, you didn’t particularly want to stand out from the crowd.
Tonight you were walking hand in hand with Daisy to meet her band mates. To say you were nervous was an understatement. Meeting new people wasn’t your strong suit. You found it hard to start up a conversation, but alas, you were here anyway, even after hours of trying to convince Daisy to let you stay home.
“You’ll love them, Y/N,” Daisy smiled, squeezing your hand as the pair of you stepped onto the front porch. Daisy’s fist bashed against the door and seconds later it was opened, a blonde girl smiling bright from behind the threshold. “Karen, Y/N,” Daisy said, glancing between the two of you.
“So lovely to meet you, Y/N,” Karen smiled, her charming British accent ringing through your ears. “Daisy had told us so much about you.”
Your skin heated up, glancing momentarily at Daisy before smiling bright at Karen. “All good, I hope,” you chuckled, nervously.
“Always,” Daisy nudged you. Karen stepped aside, opening the door for the two of you to walk in. All eyes fell onto you and you felt extremely out of your comfort zone. There was only one pair of eyes that stuck out to you. Deep brown hues that you stared back at for a little too long.
A curly haired boy with a beer in his hand, his jaw slacking ever so slightly upon your arrival. His eyes lit up, raking up and down your body, making you shift on your toes before looking towards Daisy. Your hands had gone clammy, body stiff under everyone’s gaze, but especially under his gaze.
“Everyone this is Y/N,” Daisy said, introducing you to the group. You offered them an awkward wave, fidgeting with your fingers afterwards. “Y/N, meet everyone. Camila and Billy,” your ears perked up at Billy’s name, eyes snapping onto the brown haired boy cuddled up with a girl who was smiling bright at you. Daisy had told you so much about Billy. “Graham and Eddie,” Daisy continued, pointing to the two boys sat side by side on the couch, both of them smiling your way. “And Warren, all on his lonesome over there,” Daisy chuckled, motioned towards the curly haired boy who hadn’t taken his eyes off of you since you stepped into the room.
“Hi,” Warren smirked. You smiled, brushing your hair behind your ear, trying to avert your eyes from his heavy stare but you couldn’t no matter how hard you tried. He was captivating.
Daisy dragged you into the kitchen, the both of you grabbing a drink. “You like Warren,” Daisy said, matter of factly.
Your eyes widened at her accusation. “I haven’t even spoken a word to him!” You whisper yelled. “And keep your voice down.”
Daisy laughed, throwing her head back, her auburn hair bouncing over her shoulders. “I’ve known you for half my life. I know when you like someone,” Daisy said. “He likes you too, did you see the way he was looking at you? Love at first sight, perhaps?”
You rolled your eyes, shaking your head at her. “Shut up, Daisy.”
The party continued, Daisy had somehow managed to get you and Warren sat next to each other which led to Warren talking to you. You quickly realised how easy he was to talk to and you couldn’t deny the butterflies in your stomach.
Daisy had been watching the both of you like a hawk all night, secretly smiling to herself overhearing the two of you talk. Daisy wanted you to be happy, she wanted you to find someone who brought you out of your shell, she just didn’t think that person would be Warren.
The conversation died down and you were mentally slapping yourself for being to damn shy to start up another conversation with Warren. Daisy could see your internal battle from her seat next to you and so she decided to spice things up.
“Who wants to play spin the bottle?” Daisy smirked. Everyone began cheering and soon enough you were all sitting in a circle with an empty beer bottle in the middle of you.
The bottle landed on Billy first, Camila was sat to his side as he spun the bottle again to find his culprit. It was coming to a halt on Daisy when Camila gripped the glass and stopped it on herself. “Would you look at that!” Camila laughed, hands falling to Billy’s cheeks, pushing her lips against his.
You glanced at Daisy who seemed to be a little upset, and even jealous.
The bottle was spun again and this time it landed on Warren. You felt your heart beat speed up as he spun the bottle. Half of you was secretly hoping it landed on you, but the other half was hoping it didn’t. You were way to reserved to kiss in front of a group of people.
You held your breath as the bottle slowed and you felt your stomach nearly explode when the bottle stopped on you. You could hear your heart beat in your eyes as Warren’s eyes met yours, a smirk on his lips as he stood up, slowly making his way around the circle until he got to you.
Warren held out his hand and you accepted it, letting him pull you up onto your feet. He pulled your body impossibly close to his, one hand falling down to your waist, the other landing on your cheek.
You breathed heavily, gulping as he stared into your eyes. “This is okay, right?” Warren whispered, you could smell mint mixed with beer on his breath. “Because if you don’t want to do this, we won’t.”
You smiled at how considerate he was being, despite Daisy’s booing in the background. “It’s okay,” you said, giggling as you heard Daisy holler.
Warren smiled, his cheeks red. You watched him lean in closer and your eyes fluttered shut as his lips ghosted yours before pushing firmly against them, this lasted a few seconds and then you thought it would be over. Which is why you gasped when Warren deepened the kiss, tongue slipping inside your mouth. He had seemingly forgotten that there was an audience and so had you as your hands snaked up his chest and wrapped around his neck.
It wasn’t until your heard Daisy cheering and applauding that you remembered the watching eyes and you quickly pulled away, a shy smile on your face, your skin hot to the touch. Warren pressed a kiss to your forehead before you both sat back down and the game continued.
The game finished only 20 minutes later after you spun the bottle and it landed on Eddie, which caused Warren to give Eddie a mouthful before kissing you again, making Eddie annoyed and leaving the party to go to bed.
Karen second Eddie’s idea and headed off to bed, so did Camila and Billy, followed by Graham. You turned to Daisy who had past out on the couch and you sighed, shaking your head.
“You can stay the night,” Warren said. You looked up at him. “I-I mean, i’d love it if you did… you can even have my bed if you want- or, y’know, sleep down here with Daisy it’s whatever,” Warren shrugged.
You smiled at his stuttering. “Thanks, Warren,” you said.
“And can I just say that you are the most beautiful woman i’ve ever met, Y/N,” Warren said, taking your hands into his. “I mean, damn!” He exclaimed, making you laugh. “Do you believe in love at first sight?” He asked.
Your eyes widened at his question, shrugging your shoulders. “I think I do… now,” you said, shyly.
Warren grinned at your response. “Me too,” he said before his lips were once again pushed against yours.

Mid-Year Freak Out Book Tag 2019
1. Best Book You've Read So Far in 2019?
ON THE JELLICOE ROAD BY MELINA MARCHETTA - I will never shut up about this because it’s such a great book. It’s a story within a story about pain, friendships, family, and as cheesy as it sounds, finding yourself and a purpose. It is confusing at first, but once you hit the 50-75 page mark, you’re invested into the story and its characters. It really amazed me at how well it revealed the mysteries and how everything is connected. It makes the story all the more beautiful. The romance is also so so good.
2. Best Sequel You've Read So Far in 2019?
The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater - Holy cow, this book is amazing. I reread The Raven Cycle again this year and this time around, TDT completely captured and stole my heart. It was fun, exciting, thrilling, and so so heartbreaking. Maggie Stiefvater writes the characters (especially Ronan and the Lynch family) so well in here. It’s hard not to fall in love with everyone. This is a book that will make you feel powerful. Also, the slow burn romance is SO UNBELIEVABLY GOOD AND HURTS MY SOUL.
3. New Release You Haven't Read Yet, But Want To?
Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston - I need to get on this book because everyone and their mother are talking about this and are in love with it and I want to be in love with it too.
4. Most Anticipated Release For the Second Half of 2019?
Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater - The Raven Cycle is one of my all time favorite series and I love how well Ronan and the Lynch family are written, so how could I not be excited about CDTH?
The Toll by Neal Shusterman - When Neal Shusterman announced that he finished The Toll, I freaked out! I’m so so excited for it because book two left us on a HUGE cliffhanger and I need to know what happens next and if my children will survive and live happily ever after.
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo - As for Ninth House, the entire premise of the novel intrigues me so much. It seems dark and gritty, and I love that. I’ve seen some author blurbs and review, saying that it is incredible so I’m really hoping that it is and I can love it because I really do like how well Leigh Bardugo can write her complex characters and plots.
5. Biggest Disappointment?
Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta - On the Jellicoe Road is my favorite book so I was hoping that I would love this book too. Sadly, I didn’t. Unlike last year where I didn’t even finished the book for this question, I actually finished Saving Francesca. My overall thoughts were “this isn’t enough”. The character development was meh, the storyline was all over the place, the romance was lukewarm, and everything was brushed over. I definitely saw the parallels between this and Jellicoe Road but the aspects that are in this book and Jellicoe, are written better in Jellicoe. Francesca was a character I couldn’t really put my finger on. Her personality kept changing to the point where I didn’t know what her intentions were anymore. William Trombal is maybe the worst love interest ever. He’s just a cheating smart ass. I guess the thing I’m most disappointed in is that it failed to make me feel sad and really care about anything. Francesca’s mother is in a state of depression but that was like a side thing that wasn’t explored and I wanted it to. I don’t know. I’ll stop here. I was just so disappointed.
6. Biggest Surprise?
Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid - I never intended to read this book but everyone was gushing all over it that I just had to. I guess why I didn’t want to read in the first place was because Evelyn Hugo was so good and I was afraid that Daisy Jones would be an almost carbon copy especially with the whole “old famous stars reveal a big secret” kind of plot in both. But I took a chance and boy, did I fall in love. I know people have their opinions on this book and I respect that but I really loved it. It pulled me in and I could see everything that was happening. It was such a great read.
7. Favourite New Author?
I actually don’t have one. I feel like for an author to be my favorite, I have to have read more than one or two books from them and actually liked them.
8. Newest Fictional Crush?
Jonah Griggs from Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta - I love love love love love Jonah Griggs so much and with all of my being. He’s just great and amazing. He’s not your typical YA love interest and that’s one thing I love.
9. Newest Favourite Character?
Ronan Lynch from The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater - The way he’s written and the complexity of his character just makes it so hard not to love him. He starts out as this badass who always wants to fight someone to becoming this person who loves and cares so much for the people he is close with. Also, The Dream Thieves is a masterpiece in the way it’s written and how Ronan’s character evolves.
10. A Book That Made You Cry?
Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo - I decided to reread SOC & CK this year in preparation for King of Scars and I knew that ending was coming and I was ready for it, but I still bawled my eyes out so hard. I was sad for an entire week, not to mention that it carried on into King of Scars which was just fantastic. So basically I was sad and crying for a good two weeks.
The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater - I was not expecting to cry as much because I remembered only crying about one thing, but there was so many things that I hadn’t realized that were so important to the book and to the characters and that related to me so much. I cried so much and for the longest time ever.
11. A Book That Made You Happy?
A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro - It has been so long since I’ve read a book and not cried through it, but that I thoroughly enjoyed and had so much fun with. A Study in Charlotte was so cute and fun, but also very dark with all the murders that had occurred. I love Brittany Cavallaro’s version of Holmes and Watson. They’re very different but they still hold their roots. I also love how the characters are high schoolers because this way, we get to see a version of Holmes who is still growing into their skin with being a genius and all, and Watson learning to deal with younger version of Holmes.
12. Favourite Book To Movie Adaptation You Saw This Year?
Howl’s Moving Castle - I’ve never read the book and probably am never going to, but the Studio Ghibli’s movie of Howl’s Moving Castle is a favorite of mine. It’s basically a tradition for me to watch it every year.
13. Favourite Review You've Written This Year?
The Raven Cycle Music Playlist - I love music a lot and I love The Raven Cycle a lot so putting the two together was just so fun for me. The Raven Cycle is very atmospheric and the dynamics between and within each character is so different that I feel that there is a song that truly belongs to them. And it’s also fun to listen to the songs and be reminded of my favorite book series.
14. Most Beautiful Book You Bought So Far This Year?
How to Make Friends With The Dark by Kathleen Glasgow - I absolutely love the blue and black ombré effect along with the white specks and outlining of the girl. It’s just so beautiful.
15. What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of The Year?
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman

hi 1-25 please :3 thanks c: xx
My 2019 in books (answers under the read more)
How many books did you read this year?I read 160 books!
Did you reread anything? What?I reread a lot of books this year! I reread the first 3 books in The Twilight Saga on audiobook which was really fun, with the ‘twilight renaissance’ this year it really made me want to go back and watch the films and read the books because they’re so ridiculous and I just think that getting back into ‘cringey’ stuff can be really fun and nostalgic
What were your top five books of the year?
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Ninth House
All The Bad Apples
The Wicker King
The Roanoke Girls
I know that I’m going to look at this list later and get frustrated and think of something else I should have put in asjdkflg;h
Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?I read All The Bad Apples by Moira Fowley-Doyle which completely took me by surprise and i cant wait to read more of her books
What genre did you read the most of?I read mostly graphic novels this year, closely followed by fantasy
Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to?I really wanted to finish reading The Goldfinch and Call Down The Hawk before the end of the year, but I got a new job and I haven’t found the time to dedicate to either of those books
What was your average Goodreads rating? Does it seem accurate?3.7 was my average rating and it’s probably quite accurate because this year had been a bit of a mixed bag for my reading
Did you meet any of your reading goals? Which ones?I set a goal every year to read 52 books and I completed it! I also set a goal to complete more series and I managed to complete a few this year
Did you get into any new genres?I’m starting to read more non-fiction and memoirs which has been fun!
What was your favourite new release of the year?I had a few favourite releases this year: Ninth House, All The Bad Apples, The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone, Daisy Jones & The Six
What was your favourite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read? The Wicker King by K Ancrum (2017) Fever Dream by Samantha Schweblin (2014), The Forbidden Game trilogy by L.J.Smith (1994) and Annie on My Mind by Nancy Garden (1982)
Any books that disappointed you?As much as I love Umbrella Academy and I have for a decade Hotel Oblivion didn’t do much for me, it was a fun volume but considering the 10 year wait I was hoping for At Least more interactions between the siblings. It was a good volume though I think I’d just set my expectations too high!
What were your least favourite books of the year?Hidden Bodies and And The Ocean Was Our Sky are the two that really stand out as least favourites
What books do you want to finish before the year is over?I really wanted to finish The Goldfinch and Call Down The Hawk but that’s just not going to happen :’)
Did you read any books that were nominated for or won awards this year (Booker, Women’s Prize, National Book Award, Pulitzer, Hugo, etc.)? What did you think of them?I read Ninth House and Daisy Jones and The Six which both won Goodreads Choice Awards (I loved both of them) and I’ve read just over half of The Goldfinch which won the Booker
What is the most over-hyped book you read this year? And The Ocean Was Our Sky by Patrick Ness, I’d heard really good things about it but I just really didn’t enjoy it, the art was stunning but the story itself just didn’t do anything for me
Did any books surprise you with how good they were?I read Everything, Everything in the summer and I wasnt expecting it to be as good and to have as much fun reading it as I did, I forgot how good YA contemporary can be!
How many books did you buy?Oof lets not talk about that
Did you use your library?I did! I got a lot of books out of the library this year, and I also downloaded the Overdrive App and listened to a lot of audiobooks and read some ebooks out of the library!
What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?Ninth House was my most anticipated release and I thought it was incredible it was such a good book and I can’t wait to read the sequel - it was also great to be able to meet Leigh this year!
Did you participate in or watch any booklr, booktube, or book twitter drama?Nope!
What’s the longest book you read? The longest book I read was Eclipse which was 629 pages and I listened to it on audiobook. The longest print book I read was Ninth House at 488 pages
What’s the fastest time it took you to read a book?I read a lot of graphic novels this year so they were probably the ones I finished the quickest. I think the book I read the quickest was probably Such Small Hands which I read i about an hour during a readathon (it’s a very short book though!)
Did you DNF anything? Why?There are a few books that I’ve set to one side for now but the only book that I really DNF’d was Weightless by Sarah Bannan, I just couldnt get into it!
What reading goals do you have for next year?I really want to complete more series next year and to try and read more long books because I got into the habit of reading a lot of shorter books this year and neglecting longer ones
Also you can all blame Emma for sending me this ask asdfghjk, I’ll put it under a read more!

The Biggest Surprises and Snubs from the 2021 Golden Globe Nominations
In these strange and unprecedented times, it’s comforting to have familiar rituals to fall back on. Though many of our favorite traditions have been curtailed by COVID, from Super Bowl parties to holiday travel, there’s one winter habit that’s completely unchanged this year: getting good and mad at the Golden Globe nominations.
Though awards season is operating on a weird and delayed schedule this year, the ceremonies will still take place, and this morning’s Globe noms marked the official beginning of the circuit. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association came through with a selection of nominees that include plenty of worthy contenders—alongside picks so random (and undeserved!) you can only scratch your head. Here are the biggest surprises and most outrageous snubs from the 2021 nominations.
Snub: I May Destroy You & Michaela Coel
This omission is so egregious that “snub” doesn’t even cover it. Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You was arguably the best show of 2020, a wholly original and dizzyingly bold chronicle of a young woman trying to rebuild her life after a sexual assault. In the era of Peak TV, it’s rare to feel as though you’re watching something genuinely new, and that feeling permeated every frame of this searing, surprising show. Leaving the show out of the Best Drama category is bad enough, but for Coel to miss out on a nomination for either acting or writing is outrageous.
Snub: Jurnee Smollett (Lovecraft Country)
HBO’s Lovecraft Country did earn a nomination for Best Drama Series, but none of its actors were recognized for their work. Jurnee Smollett, whose breakout lead performance as Letitia Lewis anchored the series, is the strangest absence of all, particularly since she was widely tipped for some much-deserved recognition.
Surprise: Emily in Paris
Look, we all hate-binged Emily in Paris, we all enjoyed the memes, we all understand the show’s frothy appeal. But to name it one of the five best dramas of the year is straight batshit.
Snub: The supporting cast of Mrs. America
This shouldn’t really come as a surprise, since nominating the movie star while ignoring everybody else is an extremely Golden Globes move. But FX’s miniseries about conservative firebrand Phyllis Schlafly was stacked from top to bottom with extraordinary, nuanced performances from a largely female cast, including Uzo Aduba as Shirley Chisholm, Rose Byrne as Gloria Steinem, and Margot Martindale as Bella Abzug—all of whom deserved a nod.
Surprise: A welcome spotlight moment for female directors
In the 77-year history of the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has nominated a grand total of five female directors. In 2018, Natalie Portman memorably called out the ceremony onstage for its lack of female directing nominees. And this year, the HFPA took notice, nominating three women in its Best Director, Motion Picture category. One Night in Miami’s Regina King earned a well-deserved nod, as did Promising Young Woman‘s Emerald Fennell and Nomadland’s Chloé Zhao.
Snub: Black directors and performers in the Best Drama category
It’s baffling how many superb films made by Black directors—and starring Black talent—were omitted from the Best Drama category, despite performances from those films recognized in the acting categories. Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, Shaka King’s Judas and the Black Messiah, George C. Wolfe’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Regina King’s One Night in Miami (which earned her a Best Director nom) were all absent from Best Drama. All five of the nominated movies focus mostly on white characters.
Snub: Minari
Lee Isaac Chung’s acclaimed drama about a Korean family who move to Arkansas to start a farm in the 1980s has been widely tipped as an awards frontrunner this year. Unsurprisingly, the internet was furious when the Globes placed the film in the Foreign Language category rather than Best Drama. Thanks to a controversial HFPA rule, Minari is ineligible for Best Drama because a majority of its dialogue is in a language other than English—and according to Chung, the movie’s distributor chose to enter it in the Foreign Language category rather than Best Drama. So while this may not meet the technical definition of a snub, it’s still a disappointment.
Surprise: James Corden
Asked to guess which member of The Prom‘s star-studded cast would be nominated for a Globe, most smart pundits (and honestly most regular people) would probably have put their money on Meryl Streep. But instead, it was Corden’s widely panned performance that earned the sole acting nomination for Ryan Murphy’s splashy musical dramedy.

Over the last 18 hours I saw both The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and I have thoughts on both! Thanks MoviePass! Spoilers below of course.
So first, The Shape of Water:
Sally Hawkins, y’all. She’s been one of my favorite actors for several years now after delivering one of my favorite performances (maybe ever?) in Happy-Go-Lucky, and her steadily great work continues in basically everything she’s in, whether it’s bit roles in Submarine or An Education or Never Let Me Go or Paddington or the role that she finally got her Oscar nomination for in Blue Jasmine. She’s superb in everything. It’s too soon for me to really say if this is career best or not (Happy-Go-Lucky is an absurdly high water mark for me) but she’s fucking phenomenal. This is the kind of performance actors dream of giving and every single soul who watches this movie will fall in love with her Elisa.
The supporting cast is real solid! Octavia Spencer, God love her, is delightful as always, Richard Jenkins is heartbreakingly lovely in a quiet, refined way, Michael Shannon is loud and white and straight and male, Michael Stuhlbarg is reliably good. It’s Hawkins’ movie through and through. Oh! And Alabama senator-elect (jk) Doug Jones as the fish man is really great too.
It’s gorgeous to look at, obviously. And the music is really effective.
The actual plotting of the story is pretty terrific, and it really does play out like a Cold War-era fairytale, and Guillermo del Toro is to be commended for that. The actual dialogue was a little iffy sometimes, but I can look past that.
Oh that musical sequence was unnecessary. Cute, but wildly unnecessary. The use of “You’ll Never Know” throughout, however, was beautiful.
My biggest complaint is that for the most part, it sort of felt a bit...familiar? There’s the obvious Creature from the Black Lagoon influences, but Caty was quick to point out Amélie and Pushing Daisies as well. And the sets that looked practically identical to Hidden Figures and Mad Men and that “Settle for Me” song in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. It wasn’t a distraction! And the last fifteen minutes or so are so strong that it made me forget about most of the issues I had with it up to that point.
Oh, I also felt like the movie was missing a scene in establishing Elisa and the Asset’s relationship early on? It all happened a bit quickly. And maybe it’s my own prejudices, but I wouldn’t be all that quick to jump into a romantic and sexual relationship with a fish man. But Hawkins sold it!
As for Oscar chances, I wouldn’t at all be surprised if it led the nomination count this year. It can get nominated in virtually every non-documentary/non-foreign language/non-animation category except Best Actor and Best Song, lol. I’m wondering how Best Picture and Director will shake out--Del Toro stands a real shot at Director, I think, as does Hawkins.
Real solid overall!
Now Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
So first off: In Bruges is one of my all-time favorite movies. Naturally, I was thrilled that McDonagh had this movie coming out, because I like pretty much everyone in the cast and I’m all for him getting some awards love.
Basically I’m not sure what to make of this just yet. I feel like maybe it has a lot of great and interesting ideas and doesn’t actually explore them all the way? Like, yeah, in the current political climate I can understand the temptation to praise a movie for merely saying that cops can be very shitty and the jobs lends itself to corruption, toxic masculinity, violence, racism, and homophobia very easily, but the film doesn’t seem to really do much with that other than show (repeatedly) how shitty Sam Rockwell’s Dixon is, until his redemption arc begins.
Frances McDormand is real good. It’s an incredibly powerful and entertaining performance, and a truly fascinating character.
I can’t tell how I feel about Sam Rockwell’s performance--a lot of his scenes were really great and honest and a lot of others felt really false and mannered. I’m not sure how much my perception is being colored by his character being so aggressively despicable, even with the attempt at a redemption arc. And for a character that was clearly meant to be some kind of comedic relief, I didn’t think he was very funny--probably because he was so despicable.
Most of the humor really fell flat with my audience unfortunately! I did think parts of it were very, very funny in the McDonagh way. Not all of it though.
Woody Harrelson was probably my favorite of the supporting actors. His letters were beautifully acted and written, so kudos for that, McD.
Most of it really feels like what it is: a non-American writer/director creating a story that critiques and comments on contemporary America. The problem with that is that it doesn’t actually feel like the America we live in right now. Which, weirdly, was sort of a positive thing for me since the story is so heightened and frankly unbelievable in the first place.
John Hawkes, Lucas Hedges, Željko Ivanek, and Peter Dinklage are all great actors and were all waaaaaaaay underused. Samara Weaving as Penelope was fucking hilarious but she was in a completely different movie from everyone else. Abbie Cornish was probably used too much, lol. I’m still not sold on Caleb Landry Jones as an actor but I liked him more here than I did in Get Out.
Also, what is it with Martin McDonagh and little people?
The makings of a really great, really important movie are here, but I don’t think it delivered all the way.
All that said, watching it, it feels like a Best Picture winner? And not in the way that it’s the best movie of the year, but in the sense that it checks all the boxes of one: just timely enough, enough of a crowd-pleaser, full of actors acting really hard, a VERY writerly script, etc. However, as last year showed, being perceived as an inevitable winner can be a bad thing. And the current voting system favors consensus picks. It’s a long road to the Oscars, and I’d be very surprised if Three Billboards kept up the buzz to actually take it all the way. But of course, I’ve been wrong before.
