i think that the desire for perfection when it comes to activism, organizing, and the like is truly the biggest detriment to progress in the present day. so many people labor under this fantasy that some perfect leader or solution or way of doing things will happen, and in the end we just end up going nowhere.
#a lots been going on in a different online sphere of mine and it's got me thinking about this topic specifically#the idea that things have to happen perfectly and that activism must be perfect is also an incredibly privileged take to have#most people don't have the time to be perfect activists#most people don't have the resources to be perfect activists#and the people who expect others to be perfect activists are often the people who both have the resources and are deeply imperfect themself#i'm a firm believer that the best activism is activism that actually sparks change and progress#and that activism is often imperfect and flawed along the way#but online leftists in particular are so caught up in the idea of being morally correct that they#overcompensate and don't get anything real done#or don't admit when what they did do was a mistake or didn't work out quite right#this is like a half formed thought i might revisit it later#personal#politics#activism

its occuring to me what specifically it is that therapists go to therapy for
#id always assumed it was yknow just a mix of things#and like nuance disclaimers thats still true yada yada thats not the point rn#but im thinking now that its more about. the weight#you have to be perfect. you have to be the ideal. you have to carry yourself perfectly and embody every principle youre trying to teach#you are responsible for other peoples ability to be happy‚ not just in how your action effect them here and now but#in what ripple effects any and everything you say could have#you are the authority figure‚ other people will listen to what you say‚ you can change the course of their entire lives#of course that would weigh on a person. how couldnt it#and how could you ever turn it off#how could you ever let yourself just be a person‚ messy and imperfect‚ when you know so intimately the ramifications of things like that?#and yet how couldnt you when you know that no one can be 'on' like that all the time?#do therapists actually go to therapy? or do they go to a support group in everything but name? surely the person#theyre talking too feels the same pressure‚ if not moreso#a part of me wonders how much it can really help‚ then‚ preaching to the choir. but a bigger part of me knows better#knows that the only difference between the choir and the rest of the congregation is the willingness to sing in front of others#either way‚ your audience already knows and agrees. its just a question of which direction youre facing#origibberish

That is so slay!! Love that you share it with a friend, haha. I’ve seen it 152 times, only once in theaters for a special anniversary screening and it was MAGICAL. I have a dvd and a special dvd with extra art and the blueprint plans for the lighthouse itself and their clothing that I am happy to share, but OUUUGH I love this movie!! I watch it at least once a week!! I have read through the original script at least six times!!
They definitely did more!! Oh my goodness!! I’m so glad you agree. We of course have the moment they almost kiss while slow dancing, (which is phenomenal) but a lot of people glaze over Howard almost blatantly kissing Wake before he beats him up, when he is hallucinating him as the mermaid!!
And then, right after that, when he tells Wake to bark like a dog, the atmosphere is so TENSE I can’t stand it!! I certainly think after he told him to roll over and stood over him that they did… something. What in particular depends on the reading, but it definitely wasn’t kosher, let’s say. (Whether or not Wake did or even could consent is also very dubious at best).
I love rewatching the movie with a different reading in mind. The Proteus / Prometheus theory, Wake being the liar, Howard being the liar, them both lying, it all being a deathbed hallucination, Howard having killed Winslow bc they were lovers/he had a crush, etc., even different variations of them all put together!
Anyone have a favorite interpretation? Favorite theory? Moment? Anything?

Because it’s a kids show so the primary solver of the problems involved is obviously going to be the kids. Having an adult swoop in and solve everything/baby sit all the time would probably be kind of boring for the intended audience. Boring for everyone actually. Next question.
#TMNT 2012#I mean a Watsonian answer could be trauma or whatever and that this family needs counselling but can’t get it because of the mutant thing#but the primary viewing audience is probably ten year olds who think fifteen is like close enough to being potentially capable#Like do I think ATLA did far better by the whole kids who have to fight angle?#of course: and the romance was much better too in atla for that matter#but we have to remember that adults ranging from their twenties to forties aren’t the primary audience in either case#2012 is the animated TMNT version I have the most issues with but some of the common criticisms aren’t great either#Like I think it’s important for kids to see themselves as capable#And sometimes we adults just also kind of suck#like the ones who animated april to have her ass showing when tied up for instance#TLDR: there are legitimate problems with this show but like come on#(Also the idea adults will always be perfectly capable of everything is kind of immature#Like idk I don’t see splinter being able to do donatellos tech capabilities)#Like I think rise did far better with the whole imperfect splinter thing but you know#2012 sometimes feels like that nutty first draft of a fanfic where you’re throwing everything to the wall to see what works#it’s like Nickelodeons practice series I guess#rise is already an improvement and maybe so will mutant mayhem be who knows#But any splinter works best in missions when they are reserved for those which are big deals#like it indicates it’s serious business if a splinter gets involved

There's a lot that can be analysed in The Outlaws Scarlett & Browne about eugenics, actually
#and the treatment of the Other as well#not done the book yet so i don't know what the tainted actually ARE or how they came to be but on the human front#the idea of anyone having physical or mental disabilities or 'imperfections' (and those with speech impediments etc)#being not only cast out of society but also more likely to be hunted down and killed is horrifying. like. this is a society. this is a post#apocalyptic futuristic britain where it is so TERRIFYING to live in the 'civilised areas' BECAUSE they literally get rid of anything#and anyone that looks or acts or is in some way shape or form different#this is very interesting worldbuilding because it all stems from fear of the supernatural(?) beasts that the humans are afraid of#and the fear of anything that isn't 'perfectly' human#idk if jonathan stroud is trying to say something particular in this area but it strikes me as a rather interesting story to tell in our ti#time#the people who are different and 'less' human (i.e. albert and ettie) are shown to be just as precious and nuanced and worthy of love#as the townspeople#on that note the idea that joe is trying to protect his toddler granddaughter because when the townspeople#find out she's mute they'll come after this child is deeply deeply disturbing and i'm glad that stroud really isn't#afraid to show his young readers the depth of how disturbing this kind of thinking is#reading adventures

I saw the Barbie movie and this little rant I'm about to have isn't actually related to the movie but the movie made me think of it because at the beginning it cuts to a closeup of Barbie's leg to show that she suddenly has cellulite now for plot-related reasons, and I. Saw. Nothing. It was just a normal leg. I've never seen anything but normal skin when hearing about cellulite and I'm tempted to believe it doesn't even exist. Like logically I know is it something, something that assholes make a big deal about even though it's so totally normal that like I think the vast majority of people have it, it's just a body thing that happens, but like. It's nothing. It's made up. It's not real. What even is cellulite. Don't answer because I'm happy in my little bubble of that's not a thing. It doesn't matter and no one should care.
