PAC: How Can You Prepare for Summer?

So TIT Copenhagen, I have many thoughts and I decided that I would write them here.

- The opening part. The stage design is really nice. There is a good production (a lot like WAD), good lighting and the music is good. Seeing them both on stage together again was so nice, I missed Phil.

- Who are Dan and Phil. This bit was so funny. My face hurt from laughing. The set designs were amazing and anytime they mention the two flats it makes the part of me that wasn’t fooled by them laugh a lot. - the ad-lib section maybe was next. I wasn’t too sure on this section but maybe it needs a bit of time to grow. Dan calling Phil Capita£ester though, incredible. The props, their acting, my face again hurt so badly from laughing / cheering etc. Ahhh I can’t wait to see it again it was sooooo good. Phils chest literally I was dead. write about things in your own life! don't write for an audience. if you think its funny, hell yeah, that's where you'll do your best work. i pulled a ton of stuff from my real life that i thought was funny for horsecomix. stuff like rainbow dash's male living space is based on apartments ive been to and the forever weed brownie comic is based on an inside joke i have with my buddies. when you write short silly things, they dont even have to make sense! the Simpsons Penis Music comic i wrote was made because that phrase popped in my head. do i know what that is? no. is it funny to just say? yeag absolutely. dont pressure yourself to do anything amazing, just have fun :)

What would you say was the thing that really shifted your opinion on postcanon stuff? I remember reading your long form posts about it and finding them pretty eloquent and interesting given the information I had (and I admit they did nudge me to me to end up not reading the epilogues along with the sheer length and my own squeamishness, though of course you also gave them their due when you felt it was fair)

if i'm being real, it's primarily interaction with other homestuck fans - my social media spaces tend to be pretty heavily curated, i basically only follow people i trust to be intelligent, since like. there is a level of comfort and complacency with social media? i don't like following new people, i don't like unfollowing old people. so i just dont branch out that much.

but i joined the mspfa discord in........ may of last year? while i really enjoy playing the role of like, i compared myself to solaire of astora once. guy who is there to help. i enjoy doing that, there is fun in that. i have spent many hours over the past months explaining homestuck plot points in ways that basically only i would and it is largely, pearls before swine, because the fact is that people dont want to understand post-canon, they don't want to like, pick at it critically, to understand why the decisions were made, they want to hate post-canon. and this is a very critical difference between me not liking post-canon and the majority of people hating post-canon.

and there is something to be said about experiencing homestuck as it is perceived by other people, to really solidify what i liked about homestuck post-canon, because there was stuff i liked to begin with. and seeing people who hate it without good reason frustrate me! genuinely, if you had to see the same "i heard jade has a dog penis" discussions every 2 weeks from some sprout who showed up only to be mad, you would start to defend it too.

like, i actually delayed that second blog post at the time because hatred for the team was flaring up again, for whatever reason, i don't even remember. but i remember putting it off because i didn't want to contribute to people who were blindly angry about homestuck^2

there are reasons to not like post-canon, lord knows there are plenty. i actually stand by basically everything i said about it not actually working and the times where it goes too far. in the second blog post, not the first one. but like, there is a total and all-encompassing difference in what the conversation is, "yeah, the meat and candy thing doesnt really work and dirks graphic suicide is ill-considered at best" doesnt matter at all when the level people are operating on is "say a plot point as a joke, make people mad, have fun circlejerking over how bad it is"

part of it is also that in the process of writing my own comic, it kind of comes with the territory to be less precious about the characters. like, team slime, my home discord server, watches movies every saturday. for a while, our theme was musicals, and eventually, we watched hamilton. and i realized that lin manuel miranda writes alexander hamilton in the exact way i am always afraid i am writing jane and vriska, like. just. truly relentlessly protective of them. and so being less precious about these characters means recognizing the flaws therein, not being afraid to write them just being kind of disasters. i still am pretty precious about them, but its a work in progress. you gotta get your hands dirty with them, and that puts it in context of respecting when others do the same

like, there are still a lot of really glaring flaws in post-canon, dont get me wrong, but theyre not insurmountable, and it helps to have spaces like burning down the house for me to express directly like. what i wanted out of homestuck. post-canon is not what i want it to be, but when has homestuck ever given anyone what they wanted without any complications whatsoever

and i think it is genuinely capable of being extremely good - this recent update (yiffy overlooking the rosemary drama) is extremely choice! i genuinely love how everyone involved is characterized, the panels are flashy, it puts to bed really stupid shit, like. its unbelievably fucking good how the problem kanaya has isnt "rose had another kid with jade in secret, our marriage is in shambles" but "jane knows about this kid", like. the absence of infidelity conflict is refreshing and says so much about everyone involved. and i have been thinking nonstop about how rose and jades daughters takes after caliborn of all characters. like. "you hope they eat each other alive" with the perspective of like, a caliborn grin is such an INSANE direction to take yiffy! holy shit! its awesome!!!!!!!!

1. She loves hiking, digital art, graffiti, and making music! She has a tablet in her drawstring bag that she often draws/animates on and it has one of those beat making apps that she uses ALL the time. Ah, and she loves Origami (she learned from the foot clan)! She tends to make little Paper cranes and write little messages in them. Said cranes will be EVERYWHERE. On Donnie’s tech telling him to hydrate or something, on the leftover pizza box claiming the last piece, in Leo’s room notifying him that she stole his left overs, etc. (and sometimes theyre just for fun and don’t have messages written in them)

2. (Love this question SO MUCH) when she is standing for awhile she’ll start raising herself up on her tippy toes then back down (kind of like a little bounce that doesn’t leave the ground) and when she’s sitting she often finds herself practicing wrist/hand exercises (half the time she won’t even realize she’s doing it). Oh and when she’s sitting and listening to music she’ll tap her fingers as if she were making the beat in one of her apps (imagine clicking arrow keys on a computer to the beat of a song that’s basically what she does [heheh I used to this all the time])

3. Hmmm I’m not sure yet? Probably a mix of darks and pastels. Also not sure on the favorite color yet! I’ll make a r colored ref hopefully son tho :D

ART. They both have a passion for art, and while Mikey is more of a traditional artist, the both of them end up drawing together all the time. I imagine since both of them are the shorties of the family they climb up on each others shoulders to graffiti places in the sewer they can’t reach ^-^ (also they’re both the youngest siblings, they want independence, and they don’t like being babied <- all of these things come about for Peni after realizes she’s their sister and they start treating her like the youngest)

Leo:

They bonded over cooking …and by that, I mean Leo’s lack of skills and Peni’s bizarre recipes! Peni’s favorite food EVER is gummy worms, so naturally, once she heard of a Panini she switched out the meats with tons of gummy worms and cooked it. Leo walked in on this moment of genius and was HORRIFIED. He ragged on her about what a disgrace of food that was and she would fire back talking about how Leo can’t even make a SANDWICH without something burning. It sort of became a running joke with the two of them that resulted in Leo nicknaming her “Nini” (oh and in case your wondering, Peni LOVED the gummy worm panini, and Leo tried it and was surprised it wasn’t that bad, but he would NEVER admit that)

Donnie:

They bonded over tech and music! Peni didn’t know a whole lot about it but she was the second most tech involved person in the family so it worked out great any way. It’s a similar dynamic of smarts and crafts except Peni has more technical knowledge than Mikey. Peni will occasionally hang around the lab and check in on what Donnie’s working on, give some ideas, have an awesome idea for a new project, etc. and she also is Donnie’s go to person when he needs blue prints drawn! Oh! New idea! Perhaps Donnie builds her a piece of Holo-tech (like his little holographic screens) that serves as a literal 3D art program! Of course, she also uses it to make even BETTER blueprints for Donnie. And her and Donnie both really like electronic music, and Donnie likes listening to the beats that Peni makes :D

Bonus idea! I think it would take a while for Peni to even have a chance to connect with Donnie. After the invasion, Donnie would spend a lot of time in the med bay, but he mainly stayed in his lab after that. And after everything that happened, Donnie was just not open to talking to this complete stranger that broke into his home :/

Raph:

I think during the invasion Raph would be the one Peni talks to the most (since Raph was the least injured), so they sort of just naturally became close. Peni has someeee medical knowledge but not enough to help with the more serious injuries of the others; she would let Casey jr. take care of those major injuries while she took care of the more minor things. Raph was extremely worried about his brothers and was completely lost in the medical field so Peni would also help explain how they were being treated and what was wrong (I imagine Casey would be pretty blunt abt it which would not help Raph haha). Oh! PLUSHIES. As we all know Raph LOVES plushies (I’ve seen some stuff that’s canon abt it but I definitely headcanon a corner of hid room is filled to the BRIM with them), but lil ol Peni, having lived on the streets her whole life, never owned any (tragic, I know). When Peni first saw Raph’s mounta8n if plushies she grabbed one shoved it in Raph’s face and demanded to know its name IMMEDIATELY. From that day on she loved plushies and started gathering them for her own room (though she never got nearly as many as Raph)!

Holy shit I was working on this since late October, and I'm the most proud I've ever been of a picture I've drawn?

Details and graffiti transcriptions below the cut! 'Cause I worked on that shit for like three entire days, and I'll be damned if I don't show off some environmental storytelling word crimes.

So, first we have a couple closer looks of Sasha! Their outfit was pretty fun. I haven't done modern outfits in... probably ever, and it was nice having a lot more references to work off of.

Their sefirot necklace was fun to draw because I have one almost exactly like it. The flannel was the first time trying to do plaid by hand with a new little technique (Base colors+Multiply layer for dark stripes+Overlay layer for light stripes) but it went way faster than the god damn quilt?

All in all, my favorite detail was doing cosmetics, because I got to do little chips missing in the nail polish, and that's probably the first time I've drawn eyeshadow and willingly shown the result! : D

Next we have the little rat family in the background, with the wall-dwelling Rat King peeking through the wall, which is where I did dipped into tracing a couple photos instead of just looking at references.

Generally my process has been doing anatomy lines over a reference, then working off of those for about... three to four layers for body->clothes->hair->Full sketch, then another with whatever brush I wanna do the lineart with (usually a watercolor detail brush from one of two sets on Krita), but I'll note where I skipped that process and committed some art crimes.

The two background rats (Pestis and Mortar) are from a pair of stock photos from Getty, while the one in the foreground (Yersinia) is a mix of a pic that pops up in meme dumps from time to time of a smoking rat and a few bits that weren't in the original image. (Jewelry, the legs that were covered by an ash tray in the original pics, the "Buns and Roses" lighter she clearly stole from Sasha.)

Time for some graffiti transcriptions! Most of the variation in the graffiti came from switching the size of my brush and trying to mix up my handwriting, but there's a few segments where I use a font, then outlined the font with a 2px across brush to make it fit more into the art. Mostly, this was through screenshotting google docs, but some of the fancier fonts are from cooltext.com.

THE RUST

I didn't exactly nail the perspective on some of these (The sketchy layer for the floor grating was done once, then dragged into place and warped with the perspective... and then completely fucked that up) but god DAMN do I love texturing the fuck out of things!

There's like six Multiply layers scattered about because it turned out it's a phenomenal way to make the shading of multiple textures make sense without losing that texture, and I feel so god damn powerful!

Oh, right, the posters.

Not much to say about them. The righthand one was 95% traced from a mafia stock photo, while the hands in the left came from another stock photo.

Honestly, I drew the frames, then had no idea what to put in them. There was briefly gonna be a pic referencing a cosplay photo I have of myself, but eh...

The rats and the guy in the wall were originally referencing a Vampire the Masquerade character I had named Pretty Paulie, who was a mafioso turned nosferatu who dubbed his crew the Rat Pack. I figured if there was some kind of dramatic, Scarface-esque movie about him, he'd definitely find a way to keep the poster nearby, and I wanted to slap in one of those "Give blood!" posters from the Red Cross except... not from the red cross.

I don't really feel like I put in much effort into these (compared to the Graffiti-a-thon with several subplots), but hey... they covered the tile, which before shading was boring and very flat, so they did their job.

I'll leave you with some zoomed in textures, because I do feel proud about those! I make them via a combo of oil paint and watercolor brushes, usually with a whole lot of different coats of varying opacity until it looks like the thing it's supposed to be. :)

I've only just started drawing again this year (I've been editing a looooot longer) so there's a lot of spaces where I have hiccups, but I'm figuring out the areas I do well in.

...Also sweet Jesus this started as me trying to figure out what a character looked like. It says 3 full days worth of editing was done in Krita on this file, and I don't think it's counting the idle time.

So The Lamb is honestly a pretty insane album, not just for Genesis but classic prog rock as a whole. It's one of the most ambitious and creative concept albums I've ever listened to, but because of that it can be very alienating to some listeners due to how vague and overly poetic the lyrics can get (not quite Eraserhead levels of dream logic, but it gets close at times and most of us have very different takeaways from the story).

I think what makes this album so enjoyable and timeless for me is how unabashedly fearless it is in simply having fun telling its story. There's lots of dramatic and intense moments, but its also paced well with beautifully ethereal bits and even some silly moments. Every single song plays its part well and flows in perfectly with the next, no matter how much of a mood whiplash the lyrics or music can feel at times. Hell, one of the last lines in the album is "If you think that it's pretentious, you've been taken for a ride," and I just love that! It's the spirit of prog rock right there: go crazy and have and adventure, who cares what uppity critics think!

Besides that, it's also one of the most autistic albums ever made. Partually because I hc Rael as autistic due to the way he speaks and acts but also because the very nature of the album is like one big surrealist autism moment. Rael's constantly trapped in uncomfortable places that are too constricting or too crowded with people he can't understand and/or has trouble being around, and even has an anxiety attack at the end of "The Chamber of 32 Doors" due to being trapped in a room full of people who won't shut up. I felt all of that as a teen in high school, and I still feel it now T_T

Then of course there's my "controversial" interpretation of the album, at least I assume it is amongst many of the Lamb fans I've found on this site and irl, that this is one of the most delightfully sex-repulsed stories I've ever engaged with. Probably done by complete accident, but I don't care!

Just hear me out on this one. Sexual intercourse is NEVER shown favorably in this album; it's either not well executed/completely humiliating ("Counting Out Time") or overtly disturbing ("The Lamia" and definitely the album notes describing the Slippermen's fate in "The Colony of Slippermen"). The story ends with Rael sacrificing his penis to save both himself and his loved one, and that's a fucking insane thing to type down but I'm not exaggerating anything! That's just what The Lamb is like! Rael gains enlightenment by sacrificing a part of himself that never truly gave him anything fulfilling in his life.

One of the reasons I got into prog rock was because I'm sex repulsed and so many classic prog songs have nothing to do with sex or romantic relationships, and it's honestly so goddamn refreshing to find a piece of media that, for fucking ONCE, depicts sex as something as uncomfortable and unfulfilling as I've always known it to be. I felt seen by this story in a way most of my other favorite fiction could never achieve.

I'll never know what exactly Peter Gabriel was thinking when he wrote this story, and I certainly won't act like anyone's sex-positive interpretations of The Lamb aren't valid. But that's the beauty of it. It means different things to different people, but unites them all in a weird, rocking tale with some of the craziest imagery ever put to an album <3

4. Where Do You Find Inspiration For New Ideas?

Whew uh... they sorta come to me out of the blue! For example, during mundane tasks- often at work- I'll try to think up where I'm going in the work I'm currently engaging in and try to plan out conversations and dialogue in my head! I did this with an Act 3 scene today while plugging away through my boring accounting routine, and I figured out an entire conversation to solve the Ascended vs. Spawn debate between Ofelia and Astarion later on in With Stars to Fill My Dream! Sometimes stuff really just comes to me out of no where- I often just daydream about the story or future potential oneshots. ❤️ Sometimes, I discuss existing ideas with my partner and he and I go back and forth and he'll offer an outside perspective (and he's great to bounce D&D questions off of since he knows even more than I do) and it's wonderful. I'm really lucky to have someone like that who looks at me and doesn't think I'm crazy for writing all this Astarion stuff and instead beta reads my chapters and offers advice. 🥰❤️

14. How Do You Write Emotional Scenes? Do You Ever Feel What the Characters Feel? Do You Draw From Personal Experiences?

I answered this one in a previous ask, so I'll copy and paste it!: I love writing emotional scenes, they can be gut wrenching or joyful and I like to try and emulate what I'd feel when the characters I'm writing about are experiencing those things. I have a lot of angst history, unfortunately, but that's been great in helping me realize what happens to me when I go through those feelings. I like to touch on the senses- smell, sight, sound, touch, all of that. I try to immerse myself in it all like how a panic attack can leave you scattered and how your chest feels tight and that there's not enough breath in your lungs, or how a kiss can make you feel like there are butterflies in your stomach (cliche, but hey it happens) alongside the less glamorous descriptions of sweating profusely and feeling like everything is on fire. Emotional scenes weren't always my strong suit, but I've never looked at them through the lens of how I would feel in that moment, and doing so has really helped me improve.

17. What Do You Do When Writing Becomes Difficult? (Maybe a lack of inspiration or writers block)

I actually experienced my first bout of it this past weekend since really delving back into the hobby and it kind of freaked me out a bit. I used to experience it back in the past, but I don't remember how I fixed that... I didn't write again for 6 years so maybe it just needed a long rest? This past weekend I was visiting family so that may play a part in me staring at my laptop vacantly for 2 hours, because the space I was in wasn't usually one I wrote in but instead socially engage through. After watching some movies with my partner and taking the long drive back home, I came back and was able to write again though it was a rough start haha. It's hard for me to totally say- I don't have the most healthy of coping mechanisms for other things, so I really just hope and pray I don't feel like it again and go another 6 years without writing 😭

27. What is Your Most and Least Favorite Part of Writing?

My most favorite would be getting to a scene I've really been looking forward to and have put a lot of planning and thought into. It feels like I get possessed and thoughts aren't even getting past the thinking part- they're just going straight to the keyboard. I feel most in tune at that point, usually with some music and a cup of coffee and it's almost like drugs. Love that feeling! My least favorite? Probably when I start to get stuck... smut can be the bane of my existence here because while it's fun to write, and I know I'm beating a dead horse with this saying, using the same 3 words to describe a penis is not so fun lol. I have to get so creative and honestly smut fics are the hardest for me to write and get out because of the heavy editing I need to do to make sure they're polished. But alas, I love them too much to ever quit.

41. Do You Tend to Reread Fics or Are You a One-And-Done Kind of Person?

I'm a huge rereader. I have fallen in love with many fics that I have bookmarks of either just on my device or on AO3 and I love going back to them and reliving the feelings they gave me the first time. ❤️🫂

65. Tell Us What You're Most Looking Forward to Writing- In a Current Project or a Future Project.

I'm most looking forward to writing some Act 3 Orin stuff in With Stars to Fill My Dream as well as the epilogue I have planned! I've brainstormed a lot of ways I can keep Act 3 fresh, and I'll have some fun (the word fun is completely subjective/sarcastic) scenarios the tadpole gang will have to deal with before the end of the game. I also don't mind hinting at this bit either too much, but because Ofelia is only a bard, a certain Act 3 fight will be incredibly difficult for her to come out victorious in, so I plan to have her make a pact as well. She's lightly inspired by Ofelia from Pan's Labyrinth, and I have an excellent idea for who her patron will be and all the little details surrounding their first meeting. I'm actually so excited for this!

77. Do You Have a Favorite Scene You've Written from [With Stars to Fill my Dream] story/chapter?

I do!!! I really wish I could share it right now- it's from the tiefling party and it's the scene I originally imagined back when this fic was just a twinkle in the sky. I listen to a lot of music, and an old favorite of mine (Crazy on You by Heart) was on my playlist when I was thinking about potentially starting a fic for BG3. I didn't even plan to share it at the time, I just wanted a fun little isekai story to indulge in as I obsessed over the game, and I thought up a bard Tav singing to the group and party goers, and also to Astarion. That bard then became Ofelia, and thus WSTFMD was born. I wrote that scene a couple months ago and I'm honestly so happy with it- once it was finished I almost cried a little- it's amazing when an idea you never thought you'd actually put on paper comes out and then to not fuck it up and it sounds great too? Priceless ❤️ I can't wait to share it- it'll probably come out mid-November or beginning of December going off the update schedule, though my brain isn't working atm so I can't go in and make sure!
