The Queen's Gambit- Chapter 2
A03, Chapter 1
Daemon x Rhaenyra Multi Chapter AU: Rhaenyra is now 18 and eager to prove herself. Having never been forced to marry Rhea Royce, Daemon has matured and given up his gallivanting through the Street of Silk. Queen Aemma survives her final birth but the baby does not.
Queen Aemma knows of Daemon's devotion to Rhaenyra. She also knows that this devotion is not unrequited. Aemma goes to Viserys with a proposition: one that will ensure the future and legacy of House Targaryen.
“I, Viserys Targaryen, First of His Name, King of the Andals, and the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm, do hereby name, Rhaenyra Targaryen, Princess of Dragonstone and Heir to the Iron Throne.”
The room erupted into applause. Rhaenyra stood and surveyed the assembled high lords and ladies of Westeros. Each of them would take their turn to swear fealty to her as the new heir. One after another, the lords of Westeros knelt and made their vows. Rhaenyra stood with her spine straight and her head held high, and expression of haughty pride on her face.
Inside, she was trembling, worried that she would be a disservice to her family and to the realm. Rhaenyra looked around the throne room, her eyes seeking the beloved face of her uncle. He stood in line with the lords, waiting for his turn to kneel before her.
Many members of court watched him with anticipation. It was expected that the Rogue Prince would do something rash and offensive to ruin the ceremony. But Rhaenyra knew that Daemon’s pledge of fealty to her would be genuine.
At long last, he appeared before her. His voice rang out through the room, strong and even. “I, Prince Daemon of House Targaryen, promise to be faithful to King Viserys and his named heir, Princess Rhaenyra. I pledge fealty to them and shall defend them against all enemies, in good faith and without deceit. I swear this, by the Old Gods and the New.”
There were several sharp intakes of breath as Daemon took Rhaenyra’s hand and kissed it, in a gesture that would be impermissible to anyone else. Rhaenyra almost smiled. The Rogue Prince, indeed.
After the ceremony ended, Rhaenyra walked out of the hall on the arm of her father. “You did very well, Rhaenyra. You will make a strong ruling queen.”
“Thank you, Father,” Rhaenyra said.
Her ladies awaited her  near the door of the throne room, Alicent Hightower among them. Rhaenyra smiled as she joined them. Once she was in her chambers, Alicent helped her undress. “You looked beautiful today, Princess. You will make the realm proud, of this I have no doubts.”
“Thank you, Alicent,” Rhaenyra said. “I will do my best. Do you think the Lords of Westeros have truly accepted me in their hearts? It is one thing to swear a vow, it is another thing entirely to mean the words.”
“You will win them over,” Alicent said.
“Even your father?” Rhaenyra asked.
“He agreed with the king’s decision,” Alicent said, only she fidgeted with her hands as she said it, idly picking at the skin of her fingernails.
Rhaenyra raised a brow. “What do you know, Alicent?”
“Nothing,” Alicent said, a little too quickly.
Rhaenyra continued to press her friend until Alicent revealed what she was hiding. “Suitors will start arriving to beg for your hand. My father has summoned Gwayne from Oldtown.”
It was not unexpected, but Rhaenyra felt a pang of frustration toward her father. She would have to sit and listen to the ridiculous pleas of the sons of the highborn lords, even though she already knew whom she wanted to wed.
“I am sorry, Princess. I should not have tried to hide anything from you.”
“You have done nothing wrong, Alicent. I did not expect to remain unwed. The Seven Kingdoms will not accept a Queen without a King Consort.” Her tone was bitter, but mostly because she was thinking of Daemon, and how she wished to call him ‘Husband’. No matter what her mother had told her, she could not believe her father would change his opinion on the matter.
Rhaenyra bade Alicent to leave her before making her way to the Godswood. It was the most peaceful place in the Red Keep, and she longed for a few moments to herself. When she arrived, though, she did not find it uninhabited.
Daemon was leaning against the tree. He turned his head when he heard her approach. A smile crossed his handsome features, and Rhaenyra felt a frisson of excitement race through her veins.
Daemon rose to his feet, only to give her a sweeping bow. He spoke in High Valyrian. “All hail our future queen.”
Rhaenyra wrinkled he nose. “There is no need for such formality, Uncle. I will always be your little dragon.”
Daemon dug in his pocket and removed a dark steel chain. The pendant was a large ruby mounted on a pendant of the same steel. “I have a gift for my little dragon then. Though it is worthy of the next Targaryen Queen.”
“Is it Valyrian steel, like Dark Sister?”
“Yes, so you will always have a piece of Old Valyria with you.”
Rhaenyra turned and allowed Daemon to drape the pendant around her neck. “Thank you.”
“Beautiful,” Daemon said, his voice soft, almost reverent. “Now you will have a piece of me as the sons of the lords of Westeros bend over backwards for your hand in marriage.”
“I do not want to wed any of them,” Rhaenyra said.
“Careful, Princess. You know you must have a husband. You cannot take the throne without one. Marriage is only a political arrangement. Once you are wed you will be free to find your pleasures elsewhere.”
Rhaenyra scowled at him. “What if my choice does not align with my father’s choice of husband.”
“My brother is a fair man. I am certain he will give you the freedom to choose, within limits.”
They were dancing around the heart of the matter, but Rhaenyra would not directly tell Daemon what she wished for. If he were to reject her, it would crush her heart.
Daemon took her hand in his and kissed it lightly. “Princess,” he said in the common tongue, “your lady mother is doing what she can.”
“It may not be enough,” Rhaenyra said, her tone petulant and unbefitting of the future queen.
“Do not fret, my little dragon,” Daemon said, kissing her forehead. “May I escort you back to your chambers?”
Rhaenyra reluctantly took his arm and allowed him to lead her back inside. The day was quickly growing dark.
***
Aemma sat beside the fire with her husband. “Rhaenyra was ethereal today, my love.”
“Yes, she was. She will be a beloved queen, just as you are.”
Aemma smiled in spite of herself. Her husband wanted the best for their daughter. It was only that his Hand and other council members were trying to steer him in directions to their benefit, rather than Rhaenyra’s.”
“Suitors will begin arriving tomorrow, those who could not join their fathers. Ser Harwin Strong, Gwayne Hightower, and Laenor Valeryon will be among them.”
“Ser Laenor may not favor young ladies, my love.” Rumors about the heir to Driftmark had been circulating for years.
“Rhaenyra is no mere young lady. She is the Realm’s Delight and the future queen. If Rhaenyra favors any of the young lads, a betrothal will swiftly be announced.”
“And what of my candidate for Rhaenyra’s hand,” Aemma asked. Surely if she kept pressing the matter, her dear husband would surrender.
Viserys shook his head. “Daemon is not a potential suitor, though he surprised me by bending the knee. Otto assured me he would make a spectacle. Though he should not have taken her hand. It was an affront to decorum.”
“Rhaenyra was not offended by the liberty he took,” Aemma said.
“Her infatuation will pass,” Viserys said. “And when it does, she will be happier to wed someone closer to her in age.”
“I am sure the Hand wishes for it to be Gwayne,” Aemma said, frowning. Of course Otto Hightower would support the decision if he thought he could convince Viserys to wed Rhaenyra to Gwayne.
“I have made him no promises, but we have a close bond with House Hightower. The match would be entirely appropriate. Let us not argue the point further, my love. I am tired.”
Aemma sighed. “As you wish, my lord husband. I will not retire yet. I intend to walk in the gardens.”
“Take a guard with you,” Viserys said.
Aemma nodded and left. But she dismissed the member of the Kingsguard who tried to follow her, pressing a gold dragon into his hand.
Daemon was waiting for her in the Godswood as planned. “Brother, you proved Hightower wrong today. I was proud of you.”
“Even though I took liberties with your daughter?” Daemon asked, his eyes twinkling.
“If Rhaenyra does not take offense then neither do I,” Aemma said.
“You are most gracious, Your Grace,” Daemon said.
“How fares my daughter? You were seen with her in Godswood after the ceremony.”
“She is safe in her chambers, tired from the events of the day.”
Aemma nodded. She trusted Daemon with Rhaenyra, but if her maid had spotted them together, she was certain someone loyal to the Hand had as well. “Viserys has not reconsidered,” Aemma said.
“I did not expect him to. Rhaenyra will have to tolerate the parade of suitors. She will be bored senseless.”
“You will join our family party, and stay by her side as she meets with them,” Aemma said. It was not a request.
“If that is what you wish, my queen. Viserys will not approve.”
“He will not deny you a place at his side during the proceedings. The Hand may be your greatest rival, but as the Queen, I outrank him. Viserys may not see the merits of a match between you and Rhaenyra at this juncture, but he witnessed your loyalty today. Continue to show him that you can comport yourself in a proper manner.”
Daemon nodded. “You have my word. In any case, if a suitor falls short, I may need to feed him to Caraxes.”
Aemma gave him an indulgent smile. “You are not unbiased in the matter, Daemon.”
“No.” He agreed. “I certainly am not.”

“When I first heard it, from a dog trainer who knew her behavioral science, it was a stunning moment. I remember where I was standing, what block of Brooklyn’s streets. It was like holding a piece of polished obsidian in the hand, feeling its weight and irreducibility. And its fathomless blackness. Punishment is reinforcing to the punisher. Of course. It fit the science, and it also fit the hidden memories stored in a deeply buried, rusty lockbox inside me. The people who walked down the street arbitrarily compressing their dogs’ tracheas, to which the poor beasts could only submit in uncomprehending misery; the parents who slapped their crying toddlers for the crime of being tired or hungry: These were not aberrantly malevolent villains. They were not doing what they did because they thought it was right, or even because it worked very well. They were simply caught in the same feedback loop in which all behavior is made. Their spasms of delivering small torments relieved their frustration and gave the impression of momentum toward a solution. Most potently, it immediately stopped the behavior. No matter that the effect probably won’t last: the reinforcer—the silence or the cessation of the annoyance—was exquisitely timed. Now. Boy does that feel good.”

The line when Charles said, "Edwin's told me loads of stories about Hell," and him seeming to know he'd find a map in Edwin's book always hits me hard.
Tumblr media
Now I acknowledge Charles might’ve been posturing to reassure the Night Nurse he could navigate Hell, but let's assume this fact was real.
Because that means that Edwin felt comfortable enough to talk about all of his trauma to Charles. He mentions Hell a lot in passing in front of the girls, but he never goes into specifics. However, it seems as if he actively told Charles quite a few details about Hell. I also noticed that Charles is very calm when he's going to find Edwin. Yes, he's studying the book a lot, but he is also navigating the space with a certain amount of confidence. I'm sure it's partially due to Charles' tendency to do things without thinking and project confidence. But also, it seems as if he might have at least a very basic level of knowledge or familiarity with the levels of Hell based on the stories Edwin told.
Tumblr media
I think this is probably another reason why Edwin struggled to believe the fact that Charles had faced abuse in his past and never shared it with Edwin. Because Edwin was always up front and honest with Charles. He told him the very first time they'd met that he had just escaped Hell. I'm sure Edwin did not want to relive his memories of Hell, and maybe it took him decades to feel like he could share. But I bet when he started talking about it with Charles, he felt relief. Because sharing your trauma with someone who accepts you and loves you no matter what is always a relief after holding it in and pushing it down.
So I just imagine Edwin feeling that relief after sharing his stories from Hell and feeling closer and more bonded with Charles because of it...and then he finds out that Charles has this huge amount of trauma from his past that he has been keeping inside. It probably breaks Edwin's heart that he hadn't been able to offer Charles the same relief he'd felt.
And yes, Crystal mentioned that Charles was probably denying the trauma even to himself. We all know that Edwin knew something was off with Charles and that he was probably frustrated in himself because he hadn't been able to figure it out, but Crystal apparently had.
Tumblr media
But I also think there might be another level to it. The boys have been solving cases for 30 years. I find it hard to believe that they never had another case involving abuse or at least someone with a controlling personality that would've reminded Charles of his father. Maybe Edwin thinks back to a couple of those cases and how Charles was acting strange and withdrawn during them and realized he'd missed a huge clue about how his friend was feeling.
All those years of sharing his stories from Hell and being comforted by Charles and Edwin hadn't been able to do the same. Edwin is definitely hurt that Charles didn't feel like he could confide in him and heartbroken to think about how much pain his friend was going through alone.

i was never as optimistic about the ending of bnha as some villain stans were, but i never thought it'd end so badly it left me wondering why horikoshi ever bothered to humanize the villains or make them complex characters at all.
like-- i expected that at least 1-2 of the 3 villains who were heavily foreshadowed and outlined by the narrative as people to be saved would be, you know, actually saved. i didn't think that was a high bar. i've been let down before in fandoms where everyone was certain a character would live and then they didn't, so i tried to keep my hopes low. AND YET.
what happened to tomura was upsetting, but i wasn't that shocked after how disinterested the manga has seemed to be in him for like, the past 100 or so chapters. a bit surprised, because you'd think if anyone would succeed in the 'saving' mission it would be the MC, but whatever. dabi, well, they've spent a lot of time showing the way his quirk destroys his body even before this arc, so that also sucked but at least it didn't feel completely out of left field.
........but they're not even letting toga live???
i just-- what have we even been doing here? when zero out of the 3 characters that were marked out for saving were actually saved, you have to acknowledge that something has gone seriously fucking wrong with the storytelling. not even just from the perspective of a villain fan but from the perspective of someone who likes stories to be thematically consistent or satisfying in any way.
you can set up an expectation of these characters being saved and then subvert that and turn it into a tragedy- if done well that could even be worthwhile and interesting. but you can't turn it into a tragedy and then just... keep trucking along with the happy ending messaging and act like anything in the manga has been resolved and that the characters have somehow successfully completed their heroic origin stories.
like, maybe i shouldn't have expected this much from a shounen- at the end of the day it is still a shounen so i didn't expect to feel that it truly satisfactorily wrapped up all the themes it brought up around societal ills. but i expected it to at least resolve those things in a shounen-y way where they punch the problems and help these specific people and then you can feel good assuming that the state of things will continue to improve in the post-canon world of the manga.
instead we got... uh, none of that. the story refused to answer a single one of the larger questions it's been outlining for the past 400+ chapters. in the end, it was all flash and no substance, which again could've been fine, if it weren't for the way the story seemed to spend significant chunks of time trying to delude you into thinking it had substance.
truly makes me wonder what horikoshi thought he was doing the entire time. can it really all be blamed on burnout? the most that can be said for this ending is that it is, well, an ending. fuck dude, it is that.
and that's just... such a sad way to end a project that took up 10 years of your life.

okay but something about a major theme of 9-1-1 being that people can really thrive and be their best selves when they’re given the right environment
and lou indisputably doing the best acting we’ve ever seen from him in s7 of this show. giving layered, nuanced performances
lou saying that he’s usually typecast as a “beefcake” and isn’t given the opportunity to play deep characters
but also lou saying now that he’s playing tommy, people are seeing him for who he really is
because lou is hot, yes, very intentionally so—but he’s also sweet and sensitive and silly. and him getting to play any of that is such a rarity in his career so far. and tommy is all of that
something about tim seeing him in s2 and bringing him back because he remembered how charming he was. tim seeing potential in him to flourish and give this storyline the weight it needs
9-1-1 being a force for positive change not only within the show itself but also for its actors

We all already know Mizu and Akemi are narrative foils. But you know what? Lemme just say it, here's what I think:
Taigen and Mikio are foils.
Not necessarily to each other as individuals in the way that Mizu and Akemi juxtapose each other, but mostly in the contrast between their relationships with Mizu.
I've covered specific parallels between Taigen and Mikio in other posts I wrote; but as the number of parallels I'm noticing between them keeps piling up, I'm compelled to just compile them all in one post. So! This is, thus, the post in question.
First of all, let's look at their similarities.
1. Their status in society is the same. They are both samurai who lost their honour and have dreams of reclaiming it.
2. They are also both diligent as they strive to achieve this goal, they both care deeply about their work, but here as they begin to contrast, as the work in question and way they go about their goals is different:
For Mikio, his work is in taming and rearing horses; in order to prove himself, he must tame Kai—a willful and strong horse—and present it to his lord. For Taigen, his work is in sword fighting and martial arts; in order to prove himself, he must kill Mizu—a willful and strong swordsman—and present her dead body to his lord.
In the parallel above, not only are Taigen and Mikio contrasting each other, but Mizu and Kai are placed in comparison as well. And of course, Kai is Mizu's horse, and represents her. Which is why, when later, Mikio sells Kai off, it represents the way he is tossing Mizu (and their relationship) aside.
Tumblr media
From there, the rest of the details of their character begin to contrast and juxtapose each other more clearly. So let's look at those differences, shall we?
Their backstory:
Mikio was a great samurai who was banished. A somebody to a nobody. Taigen was a fisherman’s son who rose to the top. A nobody to a somebody.
2. The first time we meet them on-screen:
Mikio is an adult. An older man. Mizu's superior in age. He is Mizu's to-be husband. A love interest. Taigen is a child. A young boy. Mizu's peer in age. He is Mizu's bully. An antagonist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Their maturity and growth:
Mikio is mature, but stuck in his ways. Taigen is immature, but capable of changing and learning.
4. Their overall attitude:
Mikio is generally relaxed, easy-going and unfussy. Taigen is uptight, irritable and severe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. How they talk to and conduct themselves around Mizu:
Mikio is aloof, soft-spoken, and serious. Taigen is obnoxious, brash, and sarcastic. Mikio is quiet, speaking only when spoken to, even when Mizu turns to smile at him and shows openness to be near him. Taigen is loud, talking while others are silent, even when Mizu turns from him and shows no interest in conversing with him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mikio doesn't show much of who he is to Mizu throughout their marriage, despite their growing affection. Taigen openly shares his traumas and life story to Mizu during their brief alliance, despite their mutual antagonism.
6. Their external vs internal selves:
Mikio is calm, gentle, and considerate on the outside. Taigen is hot-headed, rude, and selfish on the outside. Mikio is cowardly and deceitful on the inside. Taigen is brave and loyal to a fault on the inside. Mikio tells Mizu that he wants to know and see all of her. But he scorns and betrays her, the woman he loves. Taigen tells Mizu that he wants to duel and kill him. But he endures torture to not betray him, the man he hates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. Their hair, a symbol of their honour:
Mikio's topknot is untied by Mizu during their spar. This humiliation occurs in private, the two of them alone in a rural location where no one can see them. Taigen's topknot is cut off by Mizu during their duel. This humiliation occurs in public, the two of them being watched by many others in the Shindo Dojo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. Their power dynamic with Mizu:
Mikio believes he is Mizu's mentor. He teaches her to throw knives, how to ride and care for horses, and about the tactical benefits of using a naginata. Taigen believes he is Mizu's equal. He views Mizu as a samurai like himself who received all the same teachings he did, and who possesses the same values.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
11. Their perceptions of Mizu:
Mikio sees Mizu's feminine side first. He sees her as sweet and gentle, but also clumsy and incompetent. Taigen sees Mizu's masculine side first. He sees her as terrifying and deadly, but also strong and skilled.
12. The way they approach sparring with Mizu:
Mikio only spars with Mizu once. As the fight progresses and she is beating him, he tries to put a stop to it. When she teases/provokes him, he starts taking the fight personally and seriously, finding no enjoyment in it. Taigen spars and brawls with Mizu all the time. No matter how many times Mizu beats him, he doesn't back down. When Mizu challenges him with a chopstick, he is eager to compete with her and gladly rises up to the challenge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mikio and Mizu's one and only spar is a friendly match; Mizu is smiling and having fun while he grows increasingly frustrated. Taigen and Mizu's last-seen spar is a playful wrestling match; both him and Mizu are having fun and laughing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mikio cannot deal with Mizu being better than him, so he scorns her and walks off, avoiding her thereafter. When Taigen cannot deal with Mizu being better than him, he follows her to observe her moves and continues training in hopes to eventually beat her. After being bested by Mizu once, Mikio leaves her and sells the horse he'd previously gifted to her. After many times losing to Mizu and fighting alongside her, Taigen commends her and admits she is better than him.
13. When Mizu pins them down in a friendly spar:
Mikio sees Mizu's whole face objectively. Taigen stares at Mizu's mouth and eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mikio gets angry when she kisses him, throwing her off of him and snapping at her, calling her a monster. Taigen gets aroused, apologising, so she pulls herself off of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
14. Mizu's blue meteorite sword is a reflection of her soul. She believes most are undeserving to face it, let alone hold it. And on that note:
Mikio is the first person (chronologically) that Mizu fights against using her sword. Taigen is the first person (we see on-screen) that Mizu fights against with her sword. Mikio is the first person (chronologically) to ever hold her sword, as she passes it to him, letting him wield it. Taigen is the first person (we see on-screen) to ever hold her sword, as she passes out, and he picks it up and carries it for her.
15. Then, last but not least, in Fowler's fortress, when she is drugged and in pain, she hears Ringo's voice in the dungeon. She then follows it to an open cell:
Mizu first sees Mikio as a hallucination, the sight of him haunting her and causing her to lose her grip on reality. Her eyes glow a surreal blue to represent this. Her Mama appears then and says Mizu's name accusingly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mizu then sees Taigen, but he is real, the sight of him a relief and grounding her back to reality. Her eyes return to their normal blue colour to represent this. Taigen looks at Mizu weakly and says her name softly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, later, when facing Fowler, her revenge awaiting her, she instead chooses to follow her conscience (represented by Ringo's voice in her mind), putting aside her vengeance for a time, in order to save Taigen.
So that's basically all the ones I've noticed so far, but even then, I feel there's already so much that forms a contrast between these two.
What makes it especially incredible about these juxtapositions is that Mikio was Mizu's husband, the man she had fallen in love with, the one person she had ever been intimate with, the man who made her begin to accept herself, to put down her desire for vengeance and instead live a life of peace and happiness.
So for Taigen to have so many parallels with him... Do you see what I'm saying here!
Not to mention that Mizu clearly already has some burgeoning attraction to him, as indicated by how she thinks of him when asked about her desires. And Taigen clearly has shown interest as well (see: him getting a boner after their spar, him holding her hand and telling her, "We're not done yet.").
And on the topic of speculating future possibilities of this relationship, this post by @stromblessed has pointed out yet another parallel between Taigen and Mikio:
Mizu promises Taigen to meet him for their duel in autumn. Mizu fell in love with Mikio and duelled him during autumn.
With all that said, I do believe Mizu and Taigen's relationship is definitely hurtling towards something. But whether they will actually end up together in a sustainable relationship and have a happily ever after? Well, that is a whole other story; we'll just have to wait and see.

Haunted Car Au Part 12
Previous. Masterpost
Danny wasn't completely sure what all of the sound files Duke uploaded into the radio storage. Granted, the fact that there was apparently a 10 Terabyte hard drive just for the radio seemed a bit much, although it was over half full before Duke gave him a metric butt load of sound bytes, so maybe Batman was onto something. Now it was about three-quarters full…. How many files were there?
Either way, whoever named these files are the MvP of this entire situation. Either they were just the name of the saying, or we're named something like ‘exasperated 4’ and they were On Point!
Unfortunately there weren't any defined names other than movie references. Why were there three different versions of the “Hey, Becky, look at her butt” Danny didn't know, but he might use them for reasons.
Duke had left him alone with a disgruntled “Good Luck” after Danny started playing the ‘mood’ files to see exactly what they were. He figured Duke would come back in a few hours to have a “conversation” about his predicament. Until then……
DID THEY SOUND BYTE BATMAN HIMSELF?!?!?!
