When looking for a “dragon book”, are you looking for something with a main dragon character or a side dragon character?

it's a middle-grade novel, but the post about wand battles at waffle house made me think of Hatching Magic by Ann Downer. a wizard loses his pet dragon through a portal to modern-day boston and has to go looking for her
I mean I’d love something a bit older, but that sounds super cute! I’ll have to look it up :)

Once more thinkin about this Prompt/AU
And I decided to sketch the level 1 forms the team (& Ellie) have along with sketches of their lvl 200+ Forms. I do believe Klarion is having a blast with his new friends and the Young Justice Team is going to have some Trauma from not knowing this is a Game.

(Click for higher quality) Also they are all now Mountain Sized or Larger. Also pondering them all having 3 stages to their bossfights. Second stages is when they start using more magic & less "minions" and final stage is when shit hits the fan & the surroundings get Wrecked. Like Tucker summoning a literal storm & getting lightning charged, or Sam fully emerging from the caves, or Valerie unearthing herself and the team realizing the entire dungeon-city was On Her Back.
@victoria-has-no-secret @qitsin Both y'all reblogged with fun ideas so here @bleuyellow93-storytime you had very VERY fun tags so also here lol [If u don't want to be tagged I apologize] Aaand finally, @radiance1 I think you'd like these

Chief Engineer Cashew is doing some work on the rune infrastructure in her space station home. Gotta recalibrate the leyline inhibitor runes to prevent a mana overload in the plasma conduits... or something.

Controversial opinion: i don't like the "dragon claims the rider" the show is heavily pushing. I don't like how it justifies Targaryen exceptionalism by making dragonriders in fact super special snowflakes for something inherent within them. Compare that to the book where we had Nettles who had to put in a consistent effort and ingenuity to claim Sheepstealer and even Dany who had to do actual human sacrifice to get her three dragons. Yeah, you need Targ heritage to make the dragons obey your commands, but a dragon falling into Addam's and Ulf's laps without any active effort on their part to claim Seasmoke or Silverwing ruins the metaphor of dragons as a great power that comes with a heavy and terrible cost and reduces them to......horse girl fantasy creatures.

Is it verging on tinfoil hat territory to laugh about how the egg Aegon II failed to hatch after murdering Rhaenyra was purple?
Or could it be an... easter egg?

though i'm realizing more and more that the thing that bothers me about this kind of new adult fantasy book is that it wants you to believe the worldbuilding is deep and interesting, but it is almost certainly always built on aesthetics rather than serving the story or setting. the thing about fantasy is that you don't need to explain everything, but you should have an idea of how it works, logically.
i think every day about how e.arthsea has a clearly defined magic system, and that magic touches everyone at every level across the entire world. you see how it affects all the different cultures we encounter but we're only ever approaching it from the main characters' perspectives, which is almost always skewed by how magic functions in their part of the world. there is still a lot that isn't explained until later books, or even at all, and it feels both coherent and mysterious. it can be haunting; it can take the most powerful characters by surprise.
i think every day about how my first time through the f.arseer trilogy, i didn't even clock the two kinds of magic as magic: they were so seamlessly integrated into the narrator's story that it was just a fact of the world for me. we learn about the mysteries of both as fitz does, and the full consequences of using both are explored.
you don't have to tell us everything, you don't have to take either of these approaches. but if you want your worldbuilding to be engaging you need to know how it fucking works, and most importantly, you need to respect the setting you're in fully. sometimes that means understanding boring stuff like the economy. like language. like what does and doesn't exist based on climate or culture. that's really important too. commit. commit!!! give into the cringe of high fantasy and all the downsides of an imperfect world that punishes not only the bad guys, but the heroes as well. i dare you

Alright know what here's a little Guild Wars 2 reblog game for everybody; what mounts (if any) do your characters have in their canon, do they have names? Personalities? How'd they meet??
Spill it all below, tell me about all your creatures!!
#my posts#gw2#guild wars 2#thinking about this a lot lately since mine def do!#I'll start: Pirkko has branded mounts and while I haven't named most of them. they were all branded over by Aurene#because they'd been corrupted by Kralkatorrik and they wanted to see if Aurene's magic could purify them in some way#it usually didn't work but Pirkko keeps the ones they saved#Larimar is her skyscale. his egg was tainted by the Brand before he hatched so Aurene was barely able to save him#he's a chivalrous knight type and is known to be just as noble as the Commander who raised him. brave. bold. kind of a dork.#while the Commander is fighting he circles up above and swoops down to rescue injured soldiers from the front line#Saoirse meanwhile gets the SoTo skyscale egg and that hatches into Nightshade. he's fierce and protective too#but in a much more 'loyal guard dog' sort of way as opposed to trying to help everyone else as well. he's an axejaw!#in Regrowth Ceara gets Foxglove because the Commander and Gorrik could NOT manage this little troublemaker#she's too smart for her own good and is CONSTANTLY causing problems. so basically just like Ceara HDKDHDH#Foxglove's a lunarmane! and she's very fluffy and cute and will give you the big shiny eyes to mooch all your food. evil#Ruju meanwhile has a full cast of different mounts who all were troublemakers in different ways when he found them#his griffon Windshear's a northern featherwing that was notorious for carrying off travelers in Lornar's Pass. turned out she was just bore#she's very playful and mischievous and still grabs him on a regular basis. he absolutely hates this#his fulgurite ridgeback jackal Thunderclap was a rogue jackal that the djinn had him help recapture and tame#he's imbued with Ruju's air element magic and is known to make the air spark and smell of ozone when he's annoyed#then there's Blitz his lepidote brute skyscale! he likes bloodstone magic and kept nipping everyone until it was finally provided#the rest I don't have in-game yet but I DO have concepts for the skimmer/warclaw/raptor. the 1st 2 I know what skins I want too#the skimmer will be a frosty-dyed lithosol named Frostbite. it's an ice elemental that terrorized Frostgorge Sound#the warclaw is a spinetail nian with jungle colors since it's supposed to be a smokescale-type saurian critter#and the raptor is SUPPOSED to be the jungle raptor that plointt grew to huge size and promptly tried to eat him#BUT there isn't a skin that feels close enough yet so rip. Fang is a handful tho and keeps trying to chew on Inquest HDJDGDH#ANYWAY. that's all of mine. throws this into the wind

wl/pk have the kingsoul, what might lurien/pk have?
Nothing quite as tangible as a charm linking their souls together; 'just' a bond forged between a god and his chosen, and the many years they have working together! The main reason for this is because the nature of how PK interacts with WL and how PK interacts with Lurien is very very different, and thus results in different evidence of their bond between the two
The link between a god and their chosen is something special, and cannot really ever be replicated with another Higher Being. Another Higher Being will always be competition, no matter how close the two are; a god and their chosen, however, is more of a bond where the mortal becomes an extension of their deity, and represents their ideals/what they represent in the nuance of living flesh. This manifests in vastly different ways between people and gods, ofc, but in the case of Lurien and PK- where Lurien retains his personhood to the fullest and PK interacts with him as a peer and a lover- this is closer to being 'drift compatible' (as I understand it- I've never watched Pacific Rim) than anything else. Lurien can reach out to PK and draw strength from his endless reserves of Soul/touch his mind without fear because he is mentally strong enough and wise enough that he can merge minds with a god without losing himself, and PK can enter Lurien's mind, share his soul, and commune with him without fear of obliterating his individuality or turning him into a pile of goo as a result. It's based on genuine inherent compatibility, but they've also worked on this bond over centuries and have the skills to show for it. There's an inherent power imbalance between them, but they've found a way to equalize it as best they can, and that's what they have to show for it
PK and WL, however, are two Higher Beings, and their nature is inherently based on seeing the other as competition despite the fact that they occupy two different niches entirely and have no desire to try to lord their power over the other. The nature of their bond, as a result, is not so much finding equal footing as it is determining a mutually agreeable pact where each sacrifices a part of themselves in order to better fit the other's needs. In this case, I interpreted it as PK yielding to WL by very literally giving her half of his soul; he took the more submissive role by carving away a part of himself to give to her, and made his palace a place where she could comfortably establish herself and do what she wished to make it better suit her needs despite it being in the very heart of his territory. In return, WL decorated her territory with effigies of him, and carved herself down to match his state of mimicking the bugs around him, even if she had no real need nor desire to mingle so closely with the mortals as he did. Their bond with each other is impossibly close, but it was one that was made by mutually deciding to whittle each other down to better fit against the other than one based on inherent compatibility, and they have the Kingsoul as physical evidence of this pact
