Taylor Lorenz at User Mag:
Minutes after Donald Trump was declared the winner of the 2024 election, Dana White took the stage to thank the influencers who helped lead Trump to victory. “I want to thank the Nelk Boys, Adin Ross, Theo Von, Bussin' With The Boys, and last but not least, the mighty and powerful Joe Rogan,” he said. The acknowledgement crystallized an alliance between Trump and a vast network of online influencers. Joe Rogan*, Adin Ross, the Nelk Boys, and the myriad content creators who Trump collaborated with during his campaign played a key role in amplifying conservative messaging and helping him reach audiences that traditional right-wing outlets simply never could. You can read more about Trump's influencer strategy in an article I wrote for The Hollywood Reporter today. While the right has spent years fostering a symbiotic relationship with alternative media, the left has failed replicate anything like it. There are simply no progressive content creators with Rogan's cultural impact and online following, and a quick look at the podcast charts or trending channels on YouTube shows the disparity between conservative vs progressive creators' reach online.
Without a network of culturally relevant influential content creators boosting and translating their messaging, the Democratic Party is rapidly losing credibility among younger, predominantly male audiences who have become ardent supporters of influencers that promote a distinctly conservative worldview. This imbalance when it comes to online influence is no accident. It is the result of massive structural disadvantages in funding, promotion, and institutional support. And understanding why Democrats can't (or really won't) cultivate an equivalent independent media ecosystem that rivals what the right has built is crucial for anyone who hopes to ever see the Democrats back into power.
The conservative media landscape in the United States is exceptionally well-funded, meticulously constructed, and highly coordinated. Wealthy donors, PACs, and corporations with a vested interest in preserving or expanding conservative policies strategically invest in right-wing media channels and up and coming content creators. This creates a well oiled pipeline for conservative influencers: young TikTokers, YouTubers, livestreamers, or podcasters are discovered, developed, and pushed to larger platforms, often with the financial backing of conservative billionaires or organizations on the right who have long recognized the content creator industry a valuable means of shaping public opinion and policy. Organizations like Turning Point USA, PragerU, and The Daily Wire and others receive millions from backers who view them as advertising for a broader conservative agenda. These media entities act as content creator incubators and spend extensively on outreach, production quality, and audience growth. The resources and near unlimited funds they receive allow conservative content creators to grow rapidly and spread their message widely.
[...]
There is simply zero equivalent to this massive infrastructure on the left. Leftist channels do not receive widespread financial backing from billionaires or large institutional donors, primarily because leftist content creators support policies that are completely at odds with what billionaires want. Left leaning influencers argue for things like higher taxes on the rich, regulations on corporations, and policies that curb the power of elites. Wealthy mega donors aren't going to start pouring money into a media ecosystem that directly contradicts their own financial interests. And so, progressive creators are left to rely on meager crowdfunding efforts to make a living.
Because they are not well funded, leftist creators also don't have money to pour into production teams or marketing for their independent media businesses. While Bari Weiss and other billionaire-backed right wing influencers who cosplay as independent media can hire large staffs and run national ad campaigns thanks to their robust funding, progressive influencers are forced to rely on organic growth on platforms like YouTube, Twitch, TikTok. Meanwhile, these platforms' distribution algorithms have been shown to reward conservative outrage and extremism. There is simply no way that progressive content creators can compete. So, they burn out, they quit, and this further constrains the left’s ability to build a powerful leftist influencer ecosystem that could even begin to rival conservative influencers' reach and power.
All of these things could change significantly if the Democratic party had any interest in supporting the independent media ecosystem on the left, but leftist creators have been repeatedly shunned by the Democratic party establishment. Harris' campaign is a perfect example of this. Biden began alienating progressive content creators before Harris even became the candidate. When Harris did become the nominee she showed a repeated refusal to engage with any creators challenging her ideology or policies. Mainstream Democrat loyalist centrist creators with very little cultural relevance were welcomed at events like the DNC and campaign rallies, invited to speak and collaborate with the campaign, while influencers who challenged the Harris campaign on issues like the war in Gaza, or spread more populist messaging were not granted access or similar opportunities.
The closest thing to a "progressive Joe Rogan" in mainstream liberal media is probably the podcast Pod Save America. But the podcasters on that show operate with a clear allegiance to the Democratic Party establishment. They don't speak to the youth or the disaffected masses who are fed up with the entire system. "Republican independent media is directly linked to the party in ways that the Democrats cannot recreate among the independent ecosystem because they're ideologically opposed to Bernie style populist sentiment the base wants to hear," leftist Twitch streamer Hasan Piker tweeted yesterday. The end result of all of this is an influencer landscape that's heavily biased towards right wing creators. We have created a system where right-wing influencers can thrive and scale rapidly and leftist content creators remain marginalized, struggling to gain traction and funding without selling out and becoming right wing grifters (which is just objectively SO much more profitable!).
Taylor Lorenz wrote in User Mag on why Democrats need to form their own Joe Rogan-like influencer circle, just like what the right did that propelled Donald Trump’s win.

i really think the dems could stand to take a lesson not from hasan or joe rogan, but like peak hbomberguy. he's persuasive because his political videos use wit and "dunks" to bury real stats, data, and viable information. if you look at his climate change video, a lot of it on the surface is pointing and laughing at right wing agitators who were commanding culture at the time. the argument is baked inside of this.
this is how you keep people locked in while feeding them actually useful talking points -- you need to be entertaining AND make the right look silly and clownish. all this rhetoric making right wing figures seem like powerful forces is wrong, you need to make them look like losers and morons who you cant take seriously. the dems did this for a hot second with the "weird" stuff and it seemed to work and then they dropped it.
hbomb also does not concede to reactionary/right wing politics by dipping into slurs or body shaming or whatever to drive this home (which ppl like hasan and vaush do all the time). it allows coalition building within the base while also engaging voters outside of it. anyway i wish hbomb would make videos again

Hasan Piker | Stream Appearance headcanons
I'm in so much pain rn it's not even funny, imma take some pain killer and sleep. Reblogs always welcomed. Request are open!
Partner streams with Hasan are very chaotic in general. However nothing would truely match the partner reveal twitch stream I imagine the stream would have “Secret special guest” or something in the title. I would start out as a normal stream, personal life, politics, and so on until it's about 2-3pm. The entire time He’d be staying that there is someone coming later, and they need to be on their best behavior . When talking about his personal life at the start of the stream he’d mention that his partner is staying over and swiftly moving on, not an uncommon thing for him to do, so nothing was really thought of.
When you show up, he introduces you by saying Chat, introducing to you, for the first time on any platform, my partner.” Queue chat losing their collective mind, and starting to ask any and all questions they can think of. He’s incredibly watchful of chat during this time, and instantly banning anyone who sends a chat saying or implying something rude about you. This is also followed by the obligatory Joe Rogan video that he makes girls watch when they first appear on stream.
After the reveal stream I can imagine you becoming a recurring person, mostly tiny cameos. Like, every so often your hand will pop into frame to hand him something, water or food. It always causes him to stop what he’s in the middle of doing at that moment and thank you, he could be knee deep in a 10 minute stun lock and just have to hand him a water bottle and he’ll come to a full stop until you leave the room at which point he’ll pick his little rant back up.
I can also see stream bits that include you. Painting streams (more on that later), movie reviews, true crime, and other react andy things are not uncommon things for you to be on stream for. For example he would let you just rant about any movie you’ve watched, recently or not, for like thirty minutes. Like, yes girl, explain Tinkerbell and the Great Fairy Rescue to chat, they’ll love it.
Or he’ll get you to watch older reality TV shows, and videos that pertain to your interest. You know these J-Aubery mini-docs that he’ll watch, he’ll also get you to watch them. Anytime something comes up that you don’t understand, he’ll make sure to pause it so he can explain it to you until you do. If you are watching something and he doesn’t get it but you do, he does expect you to explain it. Sometimes he’ll have you explain things to him on stream just because he likes to show off how smart you are to chat.
Sometimes when you go to give Kaya some pats, you hover in the background. Mainly when you're interested in what he is watching/doing or when you’re trying to figure out just what he’s going off about, I can only imagine how confusing it must be to walk into the middle of him being stunlocked by some chatter.
He will absolutely make fun of how short you are, no matter your actual height, because man is built like a brick house and everyone is smaller than him.
I almost forgot about IRL streams. Please find a way to go on any and all IRL streams with him. Especially if it’s some kind of shopping stream. Take every chance you can to fix his fashion sense, it’ll never take but you should still try.
He’d also take you to Shitcamp and the Streamer Awards. I know they are not his live streams but he likes you being there. You’re not really a contestant or anything, but you take part in certain games and activities. Chat loves seeing you in the background, not really participating but still being iconic.

i don’t know of a solution to this problem, but let me lay out what’s happening with the young men in the country right now
every single hobby you have is entirely dominated by right wing politics. you like gaming? full of anti-wokeism. you like working out? right-wing fitness influencers who will sell you snake oil supplements and anti-science bs abound. you like sports? infested with right-wingers since the dawn of time. you just like watching youtube videos or instagram reels or tiktoks or podcasts? every algorithim is designed to push you into right-wing rabbitholes because it makes both the platform and the creators a ridiculous amount of money, and every large creator who looks like and caters to folks like you (with the exception of only a few, like hasan and the kavernacle) is a right-wing grifter.
this is happening, yes because many people are majorly profiting from it, but also because you’re part of the demographic with the most societal power. meaning your allyship to the left and the various movements within would be a terrible blow to the status quo and possibly what finally abolishes it for good. this is why the government pours money into call of duty games. this is why the government pours money into the likes of tim pool and joe rogan. the government has been shoving anti-left sentiments down your throat since you were old enough to understand them because otherwise you would be a much more serious threat to it than almost any other group.
when you do actually venture outside of your right-wing bubble (which you’re encouraged by the people you’ve been taught to trust never to do), it’s a 50/50 chance you will see someone like hasan, and maybe you’ll be initially resistant to his ideas but over time become less and less radicalized and farther and farther left, or you’ll see some random internet stranger saying they hate all men or something and decide that the left truly does not want you, and the right is the only option you’ll ever have because they’re the only ones who are nice to you. this doesn’t mean that expressing the “hate all men” sentiment is bad or that it’s your fault men stay in the right- it isn’t- it just means there is a gap in the left-wing content market for young men. thankfully that’s shrinking now, you can find a good number of left-wing CCs who are themselves young white men, but the algorithims that promote right-wingers punish left-wingers for not grifting hard enough, so when you see their content it’s probably only because someone sends it to you directly or it’s mentioned by one of your right-wing figureheads who’s dunking on them.
it seems like the solution would be to put more leftist content out there that appeals to young men, but that doesn’t change the fact that the government has put millions into shaping their media for a long time to keep them in line with what it wants. if you actually look at polling data, young men are less right-wing than their fathers & men over 50, but there’s only so far they can go when society (their media, their lack of irl community meaning they’re reliant more and more on social media, their longest-standing cultures like sports culture being right-wing for several decades, their growing dissatisfaction with the state of the world being twisted to make them blame minority groups & women) is designed to make them this way.
#uspol#us politics#i don’t have like a huge amount of sympathy for young men rn#but at least i can understand why things are the way they are#putting the blame entirely on them is nonsense

I'm on mobile so I can't like do a timestamp, but go exactly 4 minutes into the video and watch for like 30 seconds, the rat part.
I learned about Yeonmi Park for the first time today and I went "Oh that's the girl that's in the Joe Rogan screencap that's a sort of meme" and I wanted to see why and yeah ok I get it
But at the same time I saw that section of this video where Hasan's like as long as you look the part you can make westerners believe anything, like North Koreans eat rats all the time, unbelievable stuff right?? Pure propaganda.
And I'm like....my girlfriend, born in mainland China, definitely confirmed that certain provinces in the PRC DO eat rat.
Like it's not a starvation thing, it's a cultural thing. Certain Asian countries eat rats. Like that's actually true.
You know the episode of Nathan for You where the gas station owner says he drinks his grandson's pee? I watched that with my girlfriend and she was like why are you laughing? That's true! It's a thing people do in mainland China as well. One city in particular boils eggs in grandson's pee and it's supposed to be a medical remedy.
Like I'm serious ya'll. Talk to multiple people that can actually give you the information you need and/or want about a subject. You really have to go outside your bubble to get actual information about anything. Particularly the east, we know so little culturally and people take advantage of that to mold our fucking mushy minds.

To all saying the left needs its own Joe Rogan miss that we have several, and they're awful. Take Hasan Piker, Cenk Uygur's nephew: he traffics distortions, mistruths, and total incomprehension of basic economics and polisci concepts. He gets full chubs posting raw Houthi propaganda videos.
Voices like Piker, Red Scare, Chapo Trap House, Useful Idiots, Grayzone, and the like are themselves integral parts of the anti-truth, fascist-enabling Cynicism Inc. bought and paid for, like Trump and the GOP and their media mouthpieces, by the Kremlin.
We can't afford such "help".

Bro on god frfr life would be 50% less miserable if every person who talks for a living (streamer, media) got a BA in Philosophy or Poli Sci degree, so they at least have a foundation for the utter trite bullshit they talk about. What the fuck kind of wisdom do Adin Ross or Asmongold even have? Both are babies and one has never moved out of his parents house before. Go get a degree in waffling that at least guarantees a more well-rounded society in its conclusions, the opposite of this current absolute fraudulent bullshit like "yeah maybe hitler really is cool if kanye says he's cool" or "yes the police are always good and prevent crime" or "right wingers and their idiotic culture war narratives actually are always correct even though every time they have had complete power they have utterly annihilated society via corruption and overpolicing and fearmongering".
This level of talking head celebrity needs more vetting and more education, especially the libertarian, Joe Rogan-influenced ones who saw Hasan Piker blow up from talking politics but don't have Pikers poli sci degree. Also watching Hasan say basically in front of Adin "its so easy to do right wing grifting" and then watching Adin do the thing, is a really gross thing to have to know about...sorry but if I have to know about it, you do too lol

I've started to see this phenomenon in the past few years - back in 2016 a lot of teens/young adults (I was 21 at the time) got drawn into the alt right bullshit through memes and reddit/Joe Rogan bullshit, but most were not crypto fascists - they were your average guy who liked feeling a part of something bigger than themselves, so they indulged in these toxic politics almost as an exercise in community. With the rise of Trump and a very deserved backlash of prominent leftism online (breadtube, Hasan type streamers etc) those politics became toxic in mainstream internet culture, at least outside of boomer spaces.
Current day, those same type of people are not drawn to alt right shit since its basically toxic to anyone with a brain, so they end up in nominally leftist spaces looking for that same type of community and purpose. That is, their politics are aesthetically left since that's more socially acceptable and cool than being a 4chan alt right incel, but those politics are hollow and not based on materialism or any actual political theory, they're based on vibes and community. Which is like, better I guess, but when you actually push these folks on beliefs they turn out to be your average no though mainstream culture lib. They support Israel while saying they're anti racist and anti colonial; they shit on Bush and trump and say they're anti war but are more or less with trillion dollar defense budgets; they're against court packing or even slightly hardball tactics for student loan relief/healthcare/and c.
Point being - when you have a political opinion it's gotta be based on some form of materialism or baby you're just a lib.
"they deserve to die" is something you should never hear a leftist say. if you do, run
